eshields@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – College of DuPage President Robert Breuder has announced he will retire, effective March 31, 2016. The Board of Trustees accepted his retirement Jan. 22 by a 6-1 vote, with Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton voting against the acceptance. The board Robert also was scheduled to Breuder address the contract during a special meeting Wednesday. As part of his retirement, the college will pay Breuder a lump sum of $762,867.77, according to new board-approved contract provisions. Board documents also state Breuder will help the college select its next president and that the Homeland Security Education Center will be named after him. Breuder’s contract originally ran through June 30, 2019. Breuder did not respond to media questions after the board’s meeting Jan. 22, but in a news release from the college he said he’s planning to help the board move forward. “Between now and then I will continue to help ensure our college re-

At the Jan. 22 meeting, Birt said the board was informed in April 2014 that Breuder intended to retire. Hamilton had strong words regarding the severance payment Breuder will receive. She spoke during public comment, calling the lump sum a “wanton betrayal” of the college. She felt the board should dismiss Breuder for the public fallout that arose in recent months. “I say no to the golden parachute,” Hamilton said, “and yes to getting rid of Breuder.” She also took issue with how the process of Breuder’s retirement approval was handled. “I think the board did a bad job of not including the community,” Hamilton said. Birt said the documents were confidential and not to be distributed until after board approval. For The Good of Illinois Founder Adam Andrzejewski wanted the college to conduct a full-cost study of the severance pay to determine how it could be used. “We need clarity on whether or not the lump sum will count as pensionable salary,” he said. “If so, Breuder’s pension will rival his current working salary.” Trustee Kim Savage was pleased with the retirement plan and said Breuder has done a lot of good work for the college.
Ives said she will request the Auditor General look at state money provided to the college from the 2011 to 2014 fiscal years. “I was sickened to learn about the golden parachute deal that was offered to Dr. Breuder,” Ives said in the release. The details of the buyout were not made public prior to the meeting, with trustees citing that it was a confidential personnel matter. Ives said she intends to file legislation that would force public institutions to

State Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, announced Friday in a news release that she will ask the Illinois Auditor General to audit the College of DuPage after the school announced a large buyout for its president. Ives’ announcement comes after the college made public that President Robert Breuder would retire March 31, 2016, three years before his contract was set to expire. At a meeting Jan. 22, the Board of
Trustees voted 6-1 to approve an amendment to Breuder’s contract that would allow him to retire in 2016. The contract includes severance pay totaling $762,867.77, which will Jeanne be given to Breuder as a Ives lump sum. Additionally, the school’s Homeland Security Education Center will be named after him. Breuder’s contract originally ran through June 30, 2019.

Full-day kindergarten could cost $15 million District 41’s project would require funding through referendums By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Adding full-day kindergarten to District 41 schools would cost a minimum of $14.9 million, according to information released by the district at its latest school board meeting. Superintendent Paul Gordon and representatives with FGM Architects made a two-hour presentation Monday regarding finances and rough sketches of what some of the new buildings could look like. Three options are on the table for the district to accommodate full-day kindergarten: Constructing additions to existing schools, building a new elementary school or building an early learning center for preschool and kindergarten students. The most expensive option would be building a new elementary school, which could cost $29.1 million to construct. The least expensive option
Upcoming meetings The board will host two listening sessions to gather public input on full-day kindergarten. The first session will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hadley Junior High School, 240 Hawthorne Blvd. The second session will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at Hadley. The board will meet Feb. 9 and receive a recommendation from Gordon about how to proceed with full-day kindergarten. The board will discuss it at that meeting, but is not expected to make a decision until its Feb. 23 meeting. would likely be adding classrooms onto existing schools, which is expected to cost at least $14.9 million. The funding for whatever project the board decides would have to be provided through a referendum. “I’ve been very clear, that’s the only way to do this,” Gordon said. In fact, the district would likely have to approve two referendums: One to cover construction costs and another to cover some operating costs. Board member Joe Bochenski, who sits on the board’s finance committee,

The cost of full-day kindergarten District 41 is considering three proposals to enact full-day kindergarten. Each proposal includes the cost of construction, ongoing costs and one-time costs. said two referendums is the only way to proceed. “There’s no other way to do it,” he said. Ron Richardson with FGM Architects said the dollar amounts are “very basic numbers” to account for any possible problems they could see along the way. Richardson and Mike Denz both presented the board with different layouts and plans for each of the schools based on each proposal. Gordon said there are limitations on each plan. If the district built a new school, the district would have to change the boundaries for each elementary school. Gordon estimated 25 percent of students would have to move to a new school. District officials have been public-
ly discussing full-day kindergarten for the past four months. The district currently has a half-day kindergarten program that is in session for two-anda-half hours per day. Gordon said full-day kindergarten will become the norm in Glen Ellyn someday. “Sooner or later, this community will embrace full-day kindergarten,” he said, adding that it will only get more expensive the longer the board waits. In October, the district put out a survey to determine community interest in full-day kindergarten. Of the 642 responses, 446 people – 69 percent – said they believe the district should offer full-day kindergarten.

To the editor: Only 22 days into the new year and the Backhanded Compliment of the Year award for 2015 goes to Robert L. Breuder, president of College of DuPage. Breuder received this backhanded compliment from the College of DuPage Board of Trustees in their contract addendum specifying the terms of Dr. Breuder’s early separation of his employment contract, which runs through June 2019: “The board will install a sign on the Homeland Security Education Center ... naming the building in Dr. Robert Breuder’s honor subject to the president maintaining conduct that is not materially detrimental to the reputation of the board and/or the college.” Besides being about as backhanded a compliment as could be delivered, the board’s action for protecting the college’s and their reputation is a little like closing the barn door after the horses have escaped.

Danby Woods residents address tree trimming By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Residents in Danby Woods subdivision have come together in an attempt to save their neighborhood trees from being cut down. The neighbors on Winslow Circle and the surrounding homes have met multiple times to discuss Commonwealth Edison cutting down trees in their backyards. Cindy Strohm, who lives on Winslow Circle, said homeowners were notified about ComEd’s intent to cut down trees and were “pretty riled up about it.” Liz Keating, a ComEd spokeswoman, said the company is trimming trees along a 2.5-mile stretch of the Great Western Trail. Crews are trimming trees that are getting close to the electric transmission lines. “Unfortunately, we’ll have to take those down,” she said. Keating said tall trees near the lines can lead to power outages. The trees will be replaced with 400 shrubs and prairie grass along the path in the spring, she said. The tree removal is scheduled to begin Monday. The biggest issues for the residents are property values, aesthetics and security. They are concerned that by removing the trees, the area will not look as nice as it did before, leading to a decline in their property values. The lack of trees will also expose the homes to the trail, which Strohm said is a security concern. “Glen Ellyn is a community that believes in the beauty and aesthetics of our forests and our trees. The course Glen Ellyn has taken is a very aggressive removal of the trees,” she said. Strohm and other residents began working with the village to get ComEd to hold off on its trimming. More than 50 residents met with a ComEd representative last weekend to discuss the trees. Julius Hansen, public works director for the village, said he was notified by ComEd about the tree removal in mid-December. He said the village is doing everything it can to keep the trees from being removed. “The village is an advocate for the citizens, and we really think ComEd should not remove these trees,” he said. However, Hansen said his hands are somewhat tied because the trees are technically on ComEd’s property and not on a village right of way, which gives the village little say in the matter. Strohm said the meeting went well and included a good, healthy balanced discussion. She said the neighbors and ComEd don’t have any agreements in writing, but they are close to working out one that will satisfy both groups.

A banker for 30 years, Richard Reichert, president and CEO of Community Bank of Elmhurst, has seen positive signs of the economy returning to life. “I am cautiously optimistic for 2015,” Reichert said. “I’ve seen a stronger economy, especially in east DuPage. We’ve seen some commercial customers make new investments in equipment and new product lines.” There also has been investment in Elmhurst through the use of a tax increment financing district in the north end of Elmhurst, anchored by a new grocery store as well as downtown

The million dollar question always seems to ponder what the future will bring. Prosperity? Jobs? Hard questions with no easy or onesize-fits-all answer. A panel of experts tackled some of those difficult questions Tuesday during the Economic Forecast 2015 event hosted by Suburban Life Media. Keynote speaker John Quigley, president and CEO of Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce, offered a mixed bag of news in his opening remarks to the more than 100 business and community members in attendance at the Drury Lane Conference Center in Oak Brook Terrace. “I’ve lived in the western suburbs for almost 60 years,” Quigley said. “It’s always been a vibrant place to live. This is a great idea for a conference and great place to get business leaders together.” He offered snapshots of economic growth in 2014, including that the nation is experiencing the fastest job growth since 1999, interest rates re-

development, he added. Theresa Schulz, president and managing broker of Schulz Properties Commercial Real Estate in Downers Grove, responded to a question referencing the state of the commercial real estate industry. “What I’ve seen is a change in the big box retailers,” Schulz said. “They have maxed out in the market place. ... The grocery stores made a major impact in 2014. ... We are so grateful for Caputo’s coming to the market and they brought a new element into the market.” Heath Ashenfelter, division vice president of True Value Company Chicago, felt a two-prong approach would be the best method when it came to e-commerce and how that affects brickand-mortar locations. “For folks shopping for products $500 or more, say a lawnmower in my world, 80 percent shop online prior to engaging with a brick-and-mortar store,” Ashenfelter said. “More important is that on average, those consumers spend 80 days shopping online before making a purchase.” Ashenfelter stressed that it is crucial to businesses to identify their brand by having a viable website that
is also mobile for customers that are researching competitors websites while inside their store. The second approach is to consider the different shopping patterns of Generation X that tend to want experts to fix things, and Generation Y, that are interested in projects they will do themselves, he said. “These folks’ expectations are different and you have to market differently,” he added. In speaking to the skill set required for future employees who are still in college, Timothy Ricordati, dean of the School for Professional Studies at Elmhurst College, cited a study from the Association of American College and Universities that asked employers what skill they would seek in an employee. “Ninety percent said the most important characteristics are soft skills: critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills, and the ability to work in teams,” Ricordati said. “The undergraduate major of that person is secondary to having those skills. That is eye opening.” Ultimately, for businesses in 2015, the future does look bright. “Falling unemployment, low fuel costs and low interest rates,” said Scott Magnesen, MPW Group, who helped sponsor the event. “We are not in a bad spot.”

OBITUARIES MARJORIE A. BROOKS Born: Sept. 21, 1917; in Dayton, OH Died: Jan. 17, 2015; in Sturgeon Bay, WI Marjorie “Marge” A. Brooks, age 97, of Sturgeon Bay, WI, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 17, 2015. She was born on September 21, 1917, to Clarice and Lloyd Cunningham in Dayton, OH. In 1939, she married Robert C. Anderson in Dayton, which was their home until 1955 when they moved to Glen Ellyn, IL. After the loss of her husband in 1964, she married Charles A. Brooks, and together, they had a family of five children. In 1986, Marge and Charlie retired to Door County to their remodeled home in Sturgeon Bay, and after 37 years together, Charlie passed away in 2002. Marge was a homemaker and easily accepted the challenge of blending two families, children, furnishings, even cats and dogs. While in Glen Ellyn, she was involved with fundraising for Central DuPage Hospital, Questers and Reliquarians antique clubs, and Daughters of the King at St. Marks Church. Marge also enjoyed doing cross stitch and floss needlework, painting and writing letters to the editor! Her way with words and curious sense of humor served her well. She always enjoyed a good card game, watching “her” Green Bay Packers and keeping in touch with friends and family by email or facebook on her ipad; not bad for a 97 year old! Marge will be sadly missed by her surviving children, daughters and son, Hillary Brooks Hilstrom, Tempe, AZ, Allison Brooks, Scottsdale, AZ, Jane Anderson Mackenzie (Reed), Chaska, MN, Sue Anderson Meyer (Dick), Rick Anderson, both of Sturgeon Bay; grandchildren include, Skylar Brooks Watson, Tempe, AZ, Joanna Mackenzie Daly (Dr. Chris), San Antonio, TX, and Nicholas Charles Robert Anderson, LaSalle, IL; great grandchildren include, Sofie and Calla Miner, Angwin, CA, and Declan, Graham and Owen Charlie Daly, San Antonio, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; precious granddaughter, Emily Miner (Dave) of Angwin, CA; son-in-law, Gary Hilstrom, Tempe, AZ; and many friends; and relatives. A private family service and celebration will be held at a later date. HUEHNS Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Sturgeon Bay is assisting with arrangements.

His ability to lead the way during our irst ever Hoopscoming Week was impressive. Getting numerous students involved to create video announcements about the events associated with the week was innovative and a great model for what future student leaders should do in order to promote our school and encourage as many as possible to get involved. This year’s Hoopscoming Dance had 450 students in attendance. An incredible number considering this is a dance that typically does not run due to low participation. (Johan Widmann cont’d) donate. Now came the question of who should receive all the loot he had collected. Johan’s extended family lives in Guatemala. He visits there annually with his immediate family and is all too familiar with the extent of the poverty there. He felt that there was no better place to donate his goods, then to the children in Guatemala. Today, Johan’s simple but extraordinary idea has blossomed into a full-ledged organization that he now calls, “Goals4All”. It has been in existence for almost six years now and every year, a different school in Guatemala is chosen to receive all of the equipment Johan gathers throughout the year. If Goals4All isn’t reason enough to recognize this ine fellow, you can add exceptional student, athlete, and accomplished pianist to the mix. I marvel at Johan’s humility, upstanding character and talent and am so proud to honor him.”

Just because the winter weather is upon us does not mean it’s time to plant yourself on the couch. The Glen Ellyn Park District offers plenty of opportunities to remain active – indoors and outdoors. “I think the key to staying active is to find something you’re passionate about,” said Kathleen Esposito, superintendent of recreation for the Glen Ellyn Park District. Esposito said the park district’s Ackerman Sports and Fitness Center, 800 St. Charles Road, has roughly 2,400 members and is a hub of activity. The park district offers all kinds of classes as well – from sports to dance classes to high intensity activities and more. “Our community is very athlet-
ic and sports-oriented,” Esposito said. “… Most of our families have a kid that plays something through us.” For outdoor activity, Newton Park, 707 Fairview Ave., offers a sled hill and two outdoor ice rinks. One rink is for hockey and the other for free skate. Lake Ellyn Park, 645 Lenox Road, also sees high volume activity. Over the first three days the lake was open for skating this year, more than 800 people came out to skate, Esposito said. Lake Ellyn Park offers a warming shelter, good for those especially cold days. Skaters will need to bring their own skates for use at both parks. For those looking to get out and cross country ski or go snow-shoeing, Esposito said the 26-acre Ackerman Park or Newton Park would be great locations for those activities. “I think the families of today are really active,” Esposito said. “It’s a learned thing to be active.” Esposito said it’s not just in the winter months, but all year long people should remain active as it promotes a more healthy lifestyle overall. “It’s a lifelong skill of learning to stay active,” Esposito said.

Bien Trucha treats Glen Ellyn to a toda madre GLEN ELLYN – Newcomer a toda madre is a testament to the importance of culinary balance. The Mexican eatery, transplanted to Glen Ellyn by Geneva’s Bien Trucha, opened late in 2014, with equal parts sophistication and comfort. Nestled in the heart of downtown, the small-town charm of the restaurant’s surroundings provides a pleasant contrast to its elegant, urban interior. Behind the bar is an exposed brick wall boasting a vast array of tequila. The vintage molding on the ceiling is glazed an elegant white. Modern blue tiles cover the floor of the bar, while the dining room is softened by hardwood and low lighting that bathes an abstract floral mural’s organic tones. The aesthetic is contemporary with a hint of nostalgia. Even after 9 p.m., the place was packed, buzzing with upbeat Friday night chatter. Several parties mingled near the bar, hoping to score a table. Fortunately, my dining companion and I had a reservation. We were seated, and a bowl of thick tortilla chips appeared, accompanied by smoky refried beans. The menu features a variety of items, from appetizers to full plates, all of which are meant to be shared. We began with an appetizer of tostada de ceviche topped with frizzled leeks. Spotlighting tilapia and apple, it was aggressively bright and acidic – an energizing start to the meal. Warm tacos pescado followed, the mild fish accented with creamy red cabbage slaw. We couldn’t limit ourselves to just one style of taco, and ordered the chilango, as well. The quartet provided a pleasing, adventurous medley of textures, from the velvety salsa verde cruda to the tender skirt steak to chicharron for engaging crunch. We also opted for the frijoles borrachos – drunken beans with pork belly, pico de gallo and Mexican beer – which

Glenbard South’s Billy Bair makes a basket Tuesday during a home game against West Chicago. The Raiders defeated the Wildcats for the team’s fourth straight win.
Raiders rout WeGo for fourth straight win BY SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Six single-digit losses during the first five weeks of the season left the Glenbard South boys basketball team in a hole. But the Raiders are scratching and clawing their way back to the .500 mark after winning their fourth game in a row Tuesday, and fifth out of seven in the month of January, with a 64-36 decision over West Chicago. “That was the big thing early on,” Glenbard South coach Wade Hardtke said. “Just to keep the kids positive and keep working hard. The first part of the season is usually a pretty tough stretch for us playing against some of the bigger schools. We kept telling the kids that it would pay off in the long run.”
