Glen Ellyn Park District gets $400K grant for Lake Ellyn improvements sioners President Gary Mayo said he’s thrilled the district has been awarded the grant. “This grant enables the district to implement improvements to Lake Ellyn Park and the boat house while reducing the financial burden for the district and residents,” Mayo said in the release. Phase 2 construction is expected to begin in July 2015 and to be completed in 2016. This most recent grant received by the district brings the amount awarded to the dis-
trict in the past six months to nearly $1 million. The district also received a grant worth $439,290 from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency in November. That money will be used to upgrade the parking lot at the Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center. The Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant recipients were announced Saturday by Gov. Pat Quinn when the state distributed $26 million to more than 70 Park Districts.

GLEN ELLYN – Students at two Glen Ellyn School District 41 elementary schools started the semester Monday with new classrooms. Ben Franklin and Lincoln elementary schools each had four new classrooms and increased storage space added to the existing buildings. The Board of Education approved spending $15 million on additional classrooms at all four district elementary schools in January 2014. Construction began in March as part of the district’s plan to eliminate portable classrooms. At Ben Franklin, the classrooms are being used by fourth- and fifth-grade science, technology, engineering, art and math classes, as well as general education students. The Lincoln classrooms also are being used for fourth- and fifth-grade STEAM. The rooms take up 900 square feet, and their design was selected based on its ability to increase flexibility in teaching. “There’s just so many different ways to use the classroom,” Superintendent Paul Gordon said. The furniture in the class-
Gordon said a majority of the teachers have seen the new rooms and “each one was so excited.” He even received an email from one teacher who was “just overjoyed and could not believe” everything the classroom had. Ciserella said he was in Lincoln one day and saw four children and two adults peaking into the classroom, so he gave them a tour. “The kids were speechless – so excited about the new changes that were taking place,” he said. Work is continuing at Forest Glen and Churchill elementary schools. Construction has stopped at Forest Glen because of cold weather, but Ciserella said the foundation is down, the walls are up and some roofing is done. Foundation and plumbing work has begun at Churchill. New classrooms at both schools are expected to be open by the start of the 2015-16 school year. The board is currently discussing whether to expand to full-day kindergarten. If they decided to do so, a new school or more classroom additions would have to be built. “If the board takes action, these are the types of classrooms I’d like to see in our new facility,” Gordon said.

6 Q & A with the Hearing Doctor New Year’s Unspoken Resolutions Q: Does anyone every say they want to hear better as their New Year’s Resolution?
A: Sadly, no. he way most people communicate that resolution is they wish that others would Dr. Terri Lightbody stop mumbling, (630) 580-5777 stop telling them to get their hearing checked, not get irritated when asking others to repeat what they said, turn down those background noises in restaurants and stores, and etc. Our very sense of cognition, meaning one’s awareness and connection to life around them, comes more through the auditory (hearing) sense than all the other four senses combined. It’s not just what words are spoken but also how those words are spoken that impacts our perception and understanding of our environment and others. When the sense of hearing is afected, it keenly afects the person. It is known that the potential psychological problems that arise from not hearing well are: Stress,
anxiety, anger, frustration, lowered self-esteem, distrust, paranoia, social withdrawal, insecurity, denial, inappropriate social behavior or responses. If a person is not hearing well and they lack conidence to engage socially, what is the solution? Correct the hearing. “Hiding” the hearing problem doesn’t fool anybody. Interpersonal relationships are signiicantly afected when hearing decreases. Here are some of the most common statements patients make when their hearing is evaluated and asked what concerns them about their hearing: - I only have trouble hearing where there is noise. - Certain people mumble so I can’t understand them. - I hear ine when people face me when they are talking. It’s when they turn away I can’t hear. - My (signiicant other) has a sot voice. Everyone wants to hear well. But sometimes hearing well requires help. It starts with a hearing evaluation by a Doctor of Audiology.

For Glenbard, iPads becoming the norm By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard Township High School District 87 administrators and teachers are pleased with the progress students have made since the district’s iPad rollout began last semester. In August, the 2,100 Glenbard freshmen received district-issued iPads, which hold their textbooks, novels, workbooks and assignment materials. Glenbard West High School Principal Peter Monaghan said the program’s success shouldn’t be a surprise. Students and teachers all underwent training before the school year so they would know how to use the iPads and relevant applications. Monaghan said he was a little nervous about the rollout, but thanks to “a great deal of preparation,” there haven’t been any major issues so far. Teachers and students alike have gone beyond his expectations in terms of adapting to the devices, he said. Monaghan said he recently got the chance to watch the iPads being used in a U.S. history class. Students were able to read articles and complete and submit their homework on the device. They also used a map application that showed where each of the events being studied had happened. “It was one of the best lessons I’ve seen using it,” he said. Teachers across the district are incorporating the iPads in new and innovative ways. Gary Heilers, department chair for physical education, health and driver’s education at Glenbard North High School, said iPads are even being used in his classes. The biggest way they are included in physical education is by tracking student fitness. Students wear heart monitors, which are connected to Heilers’ iPad. He can watch the progress of the entire class and use the data to help students analyze their workouts.
Prior to iPads, students could wear a heart monitor during class, but tracking the data was much more difficult. “Now we have some concrete stuff,” Heilers said. The iPads also are being used in the weight room, where Heilers has the students video model themselves doing a squat. After that, they watch the recording to see if they are doing the exercise correctly and where to improve their form. “To video model is great because they actually get a sense of what they’re doing wrong and right,” he said. In health classes, students each get remote controls to answer questions. The iPad tabulates the responses and Heilers can use the data to determine whether students understand the subject matter. Driver’s education classes don’t include iPads yet since only freshmen have them, but Heilers said next year’s students will likely do peer assessments of other students’ driving with the iPads. “It’s kind of taken over as the norm for us,” he said. At Glenbard East High School, English teacher Jennifer O’Connor has her students use the iPad camera to record themselves giving a speech and provide a self assessment of the performance, according to district Communications Coordinator Peg Mannion. Students will look back on previous videos to see how they progress. Monaghan said the two biggest outcomes of the iPad rollout are the increased organization and heightened engagement of students. He also said he doesn’t see any major changes that need to be made. If he could do it again, Monaghan said he would make minor tweaks, but nothing substantial. “I would say that so far, it seems to be going better than expected for this early,” he said. He credited the students and teachers with all the success. “As principal, I’ve been very pleased,” Monaghan said.

The road will curve north before heading south and ending in a cul-de-sac, and the properties will be on the east side of the road. Hulseberg said the plan would include a landscape buffer along the west edge of the property to reduce light and noise pollution for new homeowners. Sanitary sewer lines will be extended through the
southeastern portion of the property, and water lines will be extended from Hill and Cumnor avenues along Cumnor and into the subdivision. Hulseberg said the village will contribute $35,000 to extend the water lines, which also will allow Cumnor Avenue residents in unincorporated DuPage County to join the water line in the future.
The board gave the group preliminary subdivision approval Nov. 24, 2014. After KF Walter Homes receives final approval, the property will be annexed into the village, Hulseberg said. Final project approval is expected in the coming months. The developers are anticipated to break ground in the spring.

GLEN ELLYN – A new subdivision will likely come to Glen Ellyn after the Village Board gave preliminary approval to developers. KF Walter Homes of Palatine has plans to develop an eight-lot family subdivision at 21W576 Hill Ave., which is north of Hill Avenue, west of
Cumnor Avenue, east of Whittier Avenue and south of the Illinois Prairie Path. Glen Ellyn Director of Planning and Development Staci Hulseberg said the subdivision is set back from the main road, but a small portion of land extends to Hill Avenue, which is the source of the address. Entry to the subdivision will be off Cumnor Avenue.

Kids solve real-world problems in District 41 District 41’s Learner Characteristics are coming alive in every building and classroom through our Problem-Based Learning approach. In District 41, we believe our students must grapple with authentic, rigorous problems that engage our students and allow them to learn and grow. Our Problem-Based Learning model is grounded in the state and national standards. COMMUNITY Problem-Based Learning is not VOICE an event or a random special Paul occurrence; it is rooted in our Gordon planned units and only thrives when it is connected to authentic learning and the standards. The real-world problem becomes the driving force of why students are learning math, science, literacy, social studies, music, art, physical education, etc. The problem brings relevance to the learning. Students have been learning about linear equations for years. But how many students know why they are learning it, besides to pass a test? Or an even better question is, how many students transfer this knowledge about linear equations to new or unique situations to solve a problem? Our students have always learned about war and conflict, but have they learned why the conflict started and how it relates to today’s problems? And can they help solve the problems of tomorrow because they know more than dates and people’s names? As a part of Problem-Based Learning, we also have our students present their solutions to panels of “experts.” This allows students to communicate directly with those in the field who then give our students critical feedback and encouragement to continue learning and exploring their ideas. This past month, Ben Franklin Elementary School students who studied monarch butterflies through Problem-Based Learning attended a Glen Ellyn Environmental Commission meeting. The students presented and provided expert testimony as the commission discussed the monarch butterfly population issue. The driving factor in education should be the learning, not tests. I am not naive enough to believe tests are not a part of education. They are, but I don’t believe tests are why schools exist. Students should want to come to school because they love learning and they are engaged with the problems they are presented. If there are businesses or individuals in the area who are interested in participating in Problem-Based Learning with our students, call the district office and let us know at 630-790-6498. Thank you to all of the community members who have engaged with us through Problem-Based Learning this [school] year. It takes an entire community to support student learning and success.

The Glen Ellyn Aikido Club celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2014.
Congratulations to the Glen Ellyn Aikido Club, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2014. Aikido is a martial art in which the practitioner uses their opponent’s energy against him or her without causing harm. Here’s hoping the club enjoys another four decades of pain-free self defense. Thumbs up to all the exceptional Glenbard South and West athletes who won state titles throughout the past 12 months and were featured in our year-end sports recap. From track to gymnastics, 2014 truly was the year of the champion.

Downers Grove should consider village complex
There has been a lot of talk about spending $52 million dollars on a new village complex to include the village hall, police department and fleet maintenance. If residents do not feel it is appropriate to spend this amount of money, why doesn’t Downers Grove consider using an existing building that would only need interior work? Using an existing building should cut down dramatically on the final cost. There is an unoccupied Dominick’s store on 63rd Street, which should have ample space to meet the needs of Downers Grove. There is also ample parking. If that amount of parking is not needed, then perhaps a fleet building could be built in the parking lot area. Downers Grove could sell the existing No more fireworks at village hall and use the proceeds midnight New Year’s Day toward the new facility. Although private four-year colleges are noting their very minimal tuition hikes this year, they have a history of disregarding the inflation rate in many years by large percents. Yet, students are burdened with loans that will last a lifetime, and at the same time, find it hard to find decent-paying jobs. Why not “get even” by spending the first two years at a high quality community college like the College of DuPage? Then, transfer as a junior, which becomes quite easy for most four-year colleges. You’ll end up with as good an education, less student loans and probably save at least $50,000 to $200,000 in the process.

I am disappointed that after news releases about how [the] Glen Ellyn Park District has stockpiled money, that we don’t reap the reward in [the] form of a tax reduction. If the board members bothered to look up on their master plans and surveys, COD and the village of Glen Ellyn have implemented no tax increase recently. The community has supported GEPD’s expansions for a decade. It’s time for a breather.

Obamacare is misnamed To the editor: Initially, I just wanted to shop my health care insurance because it was too expensive. While I was shopping for more
affordable health care insurance, I found out the pain I had in my hip was arthritis. It was then that I was denied health care coverage because of a preexisting condition. So I called my congressman to grouse and he got me [the] phone number of a provider who, after many months and three appeal letters, agreed to sell me health care insurance. Today, I am pain free after two successful surgeries. Since then I resolved to visit my doctor once a year for a check up, something very few men actually do. However, my health care plan was canceled by the government and my doctor does not take the plan I’m able to afford. I’m trying to stick to my reso-
lution to make an annual doctor visit, but the doctors in my new network are almost nonexistent or more than 10 miles away. Also, my premiums have skyrocketed and my deductible is 500 percent higher than it was five years ago. It is for these reasons the new health care law is completely misnamed. Obamacare was not created by Obama alone, just ask the guy from MIT. And it is neither easily accessible nor is it affordable. That’s why the new health care law should be called by the more descriptive acronym, L.A.M.E., which stands for Less Accessible More Expensive. Mike Simon Glen Ellyn

We know how Bruce Rauner made his billion. We have no idea how he’s going to salvage Illinois based on tax cuts for everyone, which will double our debt while critical agencies run out of money. His final take is simply “I ain’t perfect. I fail sometimes. But you know what? In the long run, I don’t fail.” That may work for Bruce Rauner’s long run but not for Illinois. The state doesn’t have one.

tors, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Joint Commission on Administrative Rules before taking effect. Another bill now prohibits police from taking a person’s driver’s license as bond after pulling them over for minor traffic violations such as speeding. Illinois was one of six states that allowed police to confiscate licenses for minor traffic violations, according to Illinois Senate Republicans.
Boating Legislation sponsored by state Sen. Julie Morrison, D-Deerfield, requires boaters towing a person to display an orange flag. The bill was inspired by Morrison’s nephew, Tony Borcia, a 10-year-old from Libertyville who died after a crash along the Chain O’ Lakes in 2012. Borcia fell off an inner tube being pulled by a boat on Petite Lake and died after being struck by another boat. The flag is meant to alert nearby boaters that a person is being towed. Another law sponsored by Morrison allows police to seize the crafts of intoxicated boaters in certain cases.
After lawmakers raised the speed limit to 70 mph on downstate interstates in 2014, they decided to do the same in 2015 for Chicago-area interstates under the Illinois Tollway Authority’s control. However, it could be a while before 70 mph speed limit signs start popping up along Interstates 88, 294 or 355. The tollway authority still needs to conduct traffic studies to determine if a speed limit in- Children and health crease is warranted. marijuana pilot program with a parent’s consent. Another law requires retailers to sell e-cigarettes either behind the counter, in an age-restricted area or a sealed display case. Lawmakers also expanded schools’ jurisdiction with cyberbullying in 2015. Schools can discipline students who bully others through personal phones and computers, along with school-owned devices. Another measure allows parents to be charged with a crime if their child is caught drinking alcohol inside cars, private planes, motor homes, campers and boats. It expands an existing law that made it illegal for parents to allow underage drinking at their home. The new law extends the prohibition to property owned by parents outside of their homes.
Animal protection Black bears, cougars and gray wolves are now protected species in Illinois. Although still rare, the wild animals in recent years have been spotted around the state, including a black bear seen last summer in a field between Marengo and Belvidere, near Interstate 90. The new designation allows conservation officials to better protect the animals, as they make appearances in Illinois.

4 questions to ask before purchasing a new home B
922 Winslow Circle, GE
Re/Max Suburban
uying a new house is an exciting time in your life. Because it is one of the most important investments you’ll make for yourself and your family, there are many important factors to consider. Before making a purchase, take these four questions into account. Having the answers will allow you to enjoy your new home now and in the years ahead. 1. What exterior color palette speaks to you? Your home is a reflection of your personality and can be an extension of your lifestyle. When buying or designing a new house, contemplate its curb appeal. First impressions matter, so it’s important to consider architectural style, exterior color and details like trim and landscaping. Coordinate the trim, soffits and doors with the primary siding color for a polished look. To help, look to popular and complementary color combinations developed by the color professionals at James Hardie: www.jameshardie.com/pdf/colorplus-color-combinations. pdf. 2. Is your home protected from environmental elements? With today’s ever-changing climate, extreme weather is a reality in all corners of the country. From hurricanes and blizzards to wind and wildfires, select siding and trim products that help protect your home. Consider your options carefully. Vinyl siding can melt and wood is susceptible to rot. James Hardie siding products are engineered specifically for climate zones, so whether you live in a cold, wet, hot or dry part of the country, you can choose the siding that will stand up to weather conditions in your area. 3. Is your new home built using sustainable products? Green building is popular these days, in part because an energy-efficient home can save a homeowner money on heating and cooling bills. By choosing a home clad in 100 percent sustainable and efficient material, you’re consuming less energy and reducing your environmental footprint. 4. What maintenance will your new home require? Selecting or buying a home made with low-maintenance building materials can lower the chances of large ticket home repairs, or prevent them altogether. Wood siding and trim requires frequent repainting or replacement, and vinyl may warp, melt or fade. Considering durable and longer-lasting fiber cement siding can minimize the need for repairs. Additionally, purchasing a product with a strong warranty is a great way to maximize and protect your investment.

Inclusion of K-Deals in the Barclays U.S. Aggregate and Global Aggregate bond indices in June.
2014 Highlights: Continued to support affordable rental housing through securitization. Approximately 90 percent of the apartment units Freddie Mac finances are affordable to households earning up to the area median income, and most of those loans are securitized. Issued $21.3 billion in K-Deals in 2014 and securitized almost $93 billion in multifamily loans since the program started in 2009, backing approximately $79 billion in guaranteed certificates and $13.5 billion in unguaranteed certificates. Introduced and issued $189 million in Q Certificates that are backed by $215 million in multifamily loans not underwritten by Freddie Mac at the time of origination but that meet the company’s current underwriting standards. Q Certificates were introduced this fall. Issued $683 million in M Certificates backed by $747 million in multifamily loans. M Certificates are fully guaranteed tax-exempt and taxable securities supported by pools of unenhanced tax-exempt and taxable multifamily housing collateral.
“The K-Deal program has become the benchmark for Agency CMBS. 2014 was our second largest year for securities issuance and we now have just short of $100 billion in K Certificates outstanding. This year we also issued Q and M Certificates, adding variety to the investment opportunities for our customers. Part of the reason for our success is the exceptional credit performance of our collateral. At the end of the year, total K-Deal delinquencies amounted to 1 basis point.” “The multifamily market is healthy and we expect to issue approximately $25 billion in multifamily securities across 17 to 20 K-Deals next year. Also, in 2015 we expect to introduce a few new types of collateral to our securitizations, including 10-year floaters and small balance loans.”

Local duo providing laughs, lessons with improv studio By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Next time you’re in downtown Wheaton late on a Friday or Saturday night, don’t be surprised if you hear the sounds of laughter on Front Street. Those chuckles are the work of the Westside Improv Studio. Created by longtime improvisers Jeff Ash of Glen Ellyn and Brendon Culhane of Wheaton, the new studio in a small, underground room at 123 W. Front St. is offering twice-weekly improv shows, as well as classes. Both have proven to be a hit since starting in December. “It happened so organically and so quickly, I can’t even tell you how amazed I’ve been,” Ash said. When Ash moved to DuPage County in late 2013 after several years in Los Angeles, he thought his dream of starting an improv theater was all but dead. Then, six months ago he was introduced to Culhane, who facilitates an improv group at Wheaton College. The two became fast friends, and one day last fall, Ash said, he found the Front Street space and fell in love. Several coats of black paint later, the duo’s about 70-seat studio was born. Their mission is two-fold, Ash said. “We both love to teach, and we knew that was going to be key in anything we did,” he said. “But we also want this place to be performance-driven and give opportunities for peo-

To supplement their house players, Westside has focused on incorporating area improv groups. Ash said great content for low prices will help them build

a brand the community can trust. “I want them to get their $5 worth,” he said. “I want the quality to be such that ... people [will] never be afraid to invest in our product.” So far, this approach has been successful – classes are full and expanding fast, and both of last weekend’s shows were at capacity. Ash also said he appreciates being in an environment like Wheaton, where family-friendly entertainment is encouraged. “I looked at it as sort of an opportunity for us to promote a smart brand of comedy that does not need to be dirty,” he said. Downtown Wheaton Association Executive Director Paula Barrington said live theater can have a broad appeal and could draw people from around the area. “It’s different, fun, spontaneous and their ticket price is very fair, so it’s something you can work into an evening out after having dinner downtown,” she said.

Schutt, Avaloy represent area in college championship games

Sitting 12 rows up from the field, Glenbard West football coach Chad Hetlet got a firsthand look at former Hilltopper Tommy Schutt and his current Ohio State teammates Jan. 1 at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. After the Buckeyes emerged with a 42-35 victory against Alabama, Schutt is set to become the second Glenbard West graduate in three years to be a part of the national championship game. That contest is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday in Arlington, Texas, with Oregon as the opponent. Chris Watt also accomplished the feat as a Notre Dame offensive lineman when the Irish played Alabama in 2013. “I’m just super proud of those guys,” Hetlet said. “We’ve been lucky to coach guys of that caliber and it’s cool to see how they’ve handled it. Both are humble dudes. “Talking to Tommy after the game, he said it was kind of surreal, that it didn’t seem real. To reach that level in college football is so hard.” Schutt, a junior defensive lineman, has appeared in 11 games this season and has totaled nine tackles and one tackle for a loss. “It was great to see him around other Ohio State guys,” Hetlet said. “It was just like high school, everybody loves Tommy, all the players love him. He’s always been that lovable character. And he has worked extremely hard.” Jeremy Cordell, the head football coach at Glenbard South for five years before recently accepting a job at Lincoln-Way Central, was the defensive coordinator at West when Schutt played in the 2009 state championship game as a sophomore. Along with Schutt, Cordell will get to watch another former player in a prominent game when Illinois State plays in the Football Championship Subdivision championship game Saturday against threetime defending champ North Dakota State.

Kyle Avaloy, a 2012 Glenbard South grad, is the starting left guard for the Redbirds in his redshirt sophomore season. “It’s exciting to see these guys have that opportunity,” Cordell said. “It’s exciting to watch as a coach.” Avaloy saw action in four games in 2013 after redshirting his first year on campus. “Talking to their coaches, they are big on him,” Cordell said. “He is a cornerstone of what they do upfront. He’s the nicest kid you will ever meet. He will do anything for anybody. And he’s an extremely hard worker. For us, he really set the tone for what we want-
ed to do at South. “In the semifinal against New Hampshire, they had a fourth and 1 with a couple of minutes left. They went for it to seal the game and ran right behind Kyle. I thought it was pretty cool that they dialed up his number on that crucial play.” The game will be played at 12:05 p.m. in Frisco, Texas. The Redbirds went 10-1 during the regular season before knocking off Northern Iowa, Eastern Washington and New Hampshire in the playoffs. Former Glenbard West standout Kane Keirnan, a 2008 Illinois State starting left guard Kyle Avaloy and the Redbirds will vie grad, also is an assistant coach for the FCS championship game Saturday against three-time defendon offense for ISU. ing champ North Dakota State.

good team win after coming back from DePaul Prep and St. Pat’s. We did good this tournament playing team basketball.
Santaromita: Do you think it was a good tournament for you guys overall? Jordan: Yeah, it’s hard to lose a one-point game to DePaul Prep in overtime, but
going 3-1 in this tough tournament is good for us. We were hoping to go as far as we can, but 3-1 in this type of tournament is really good.
Santaromita: What’s it like playing four games in five days? Jordan: It brings me back to my middle schools days and AAU type stuff. It’s hard on the body, but it’s fun to play a lot of basketball and just play games.
Santaromita: Does that bring anything out of the team being around each other more often? Jordan: Yeah, it definitely helps morale. We all have to stick together through all this. Four games, who knows what can happen?
Santaromita: Heading into the new year, what are you guys hoping to do the rest of the way? Jordan: We have the rest of our conference [schedule] left. We’re hoping to keep going with that and just keep improving as a team and keep playing our basketball.

ELMHURST – Closing out games has been an issue this season for the relatively young, inexperienced Glenbard South boys basketball team. But on Tuesday night in Elmhurst, the Raiders put forth a complete performance, jumping out to a big lead and maintaining it in a 76-45 Metro Suburban conference win over IC Catholic. “That was probably our most complete performance just because we were able to finish,” Glenbard South coach Wade Hardtke said. “We’ve played some good games against Downers Grove North and Oak Forest, we just weren’t able to finish. “I was impressed. Up to this point, we’ve been kind of having those lulls where we play not to lose instead of playing to win and we pushed through that.” Utilizing a full-court press, the visitors forced 28 turnovers for the contest. That pressure defense helped open up a 25-8 advantage after one quarter and that margin was extended to 48-27 by halftime. “That [the press] certainly helped us start things off and get momentum going,” Hardtke said. Glenbard South was extremely balanced in its scoring output as nine different players registered points in the first half alone. Tyler Scott topped the Raiders with 13 points, seven rebounds and
