from College of DuPage President Robert Breuder to the Board of Trustees leaked in July, in which Breuder suggested conveying a need for a facility that would be politically attractive to the governor’s office to get $20 million in state funding the college says it has been owed since 2002. The board then censured a trustee in August for providing the media and public with false information about building plans. The school’s Faculty Association voted no confidence in Breuder in September. In recent months, watchdog groups have been requesting financial documents through the Freedom of Information Act, seeking more wrongdoing. Quote of note: “Not being able to say how we would use the state’s money [perhaps no real need] could lessen our chances to break the money loose at this time [the political

Christ on Christmas
by Joe Costello
Being a retailer is an amazing thing this time of year. One of the things that amazes me the most is how few people say “Merry Christmas” when they leave or enter our store. It’s always “Happy Holidays”, which is not a bad thing in and of itself, but here is our take. “Christmas” What is it? The celebration of the birth of “The Christ”. Jesus was born so that man may live. Who celebrates it? About 90% of Americans in some form. When do they celebrate it - all agree December 25th. How do we celebrate it? Many ways, not the least of which is exchanging gifts to the tune of about 200 billion dollars. So what’s my point? Should we call Columbus day, “founders day”, should we call Martin Luther King day, “civil rights day”, that would be a disgrace to both of these great men. Yet, the greatest man of all, God in the flesh, has had His name largely pulled from mainstream America on the day we honor him. This in and of itself is travesty enough. But what is really worse is the rest of the holiday has not changed. Millions are willing to ‘cash in on it’, but millions (most meaning no harm) have pulled His name from the occasion and replaced it with “winter” and “happy”. Not at Costello’s. MERRY CHRISTMAS! And to our Jewish friends, Happy Hanukkah. Lastly, to every soldier who is serving right now to give me the freedom to worship God, run my business in a free enterprise zone, and raise my family in freedom… THANK YOU, MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GOD KEEP YOU!

GLEN ELLYN – The College of DuPage Board of Trustees voted unanimously Dec. 18 not to institute a tax increase for 2015. The college typically requests a 4.9-percent annual increase, according to board documents. This year, the board could have requested a $1.3 million increase for construction alone. The school’s tax levy will be $83.6 million – the same as the previous year. That number includes $71.9 million for educational purposes and $11.7 million for operations and maintenance. College Treasurer Tom Glaser said there are several pending issues that could affect the school’s financial standing. According to board documents, state funding for the college could be cut by 20 percent, an estimated loss of $2.6 million. The school reduced tuition $4 per credit hour in September, costing it $2.26 million per year.
“They don’t have enough money to pay their property tax bills. People in DuPage County are hurting.” Adam Andrzejewski For The Good of Illinois founder
The college also has $17 million set aside in reserves for the outcome of state pension reform, which board estimates suggest could cost the school up to $42 million. “While we strongly believe that it is in the long-term best interest of the college to continue to levy modest annual increases in the property tax levy with much reservation, the administration recommends no increase in the college’s operating levy for 2014,” board documents stated. Trustee Kathy Hamilton originally thought the board intended to approve an increase in the levy. During a
statement to the board, she said the college should spend some of its reserves before asking for an increase. “$150 million in reserves is an obscene amount,” she said. Hamilton received some flak from fellow trustees for not knowing the levy wouldn’t increase, but she said the language in the board documents regarding the levy was unclear. Before the vote, founder of Elmhurst-based watchdog group For The Good of Illinois Adam Andrzejewski held up a 36-page list of all the delinquent property taxes in the county and said during public comment that document alone was reason not to increase the levy. “They don’t have enough money to pay their property tax bills,” he said. “People in DuPage County are hurting.” College alumnus and area resident Roger Kempa said a flat tax levy was a good thing, but didn’t understand why the college had reservations about standing still, given how much it has in reserves.

GLEN ELLYN – After the College of DuPage disclosed potential fraud at its radio station earlier in the year, the school’s Board of Trustees on Dec. 18 accepted an audit of the station. Performed by Crowe Horwath, the yearly audit looked at July 1, 2013, to June 30, 2014. The audit resulted in a clean report, which stated financial documents “present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the WDCB-FM radio station.” In the report, Crowe Horwath stated it looked for deficiencies in internal controls that could be prevented or detected and did not identify any, but acknowledged deficiencies may exist that could not be identified. Crowe Horwath also stated it would not
provide commentary on the effectiveness of internal controls. In October, the college revealed it was aware of potential fraud at the station. “The college immediately reported the matter to law enforcement officials, and the college has been cooperating fully during the investigation,” said Vice President for Marketing and Communications Joe Moore in an October statement. “The college also immediately informed its external auditors of the potential fraud.” Campus police could not provide additional specifics regarding the issue when contacted Monday. Trustee Kathy Hamilton said the audit contains no mention of the potential fraud or of corrective steps that could be taken to avoid a repetition of the situation.
“Based on this audit, as far as we know, the issues at WDCB remain. I cannot vote for this,” she said. For the fiscal year ending June 30, WDCB had operating revenues of $99,617 and operating expenses of $1.6 million, equating to an operating loss of $1.5 million. The revenues are generated by rent payments from cellphone providers for use of the college’s radio antenna tower. Nonoperating revenues totaling $1.7 million offset the operating loss. Those revenues include $570,648 in appropriations from the college, $747,493 in external donations, $256,446 in in-kind contributions, $29,475 in state grants and contracts, and $162,921 in Corporation for Public Broadcasting awards. The board approved the audit 7-1, with Hamilton casting the lone dissenting vote.

GLEN ELLYN – The College of DuPage reviewed the results of a community survey at its Board of Trustees meeting Dec. 18. The survey was performed by Comiskey Research, a marketing and data research firm in Elmhurst. It is expected to cost the college $8,600. Comiskey President Sigmund Saltz said the results showed “impressive numbers.” The survey was conducted in December via telephone with 400 District 502 residents. Questions were asked on a seven-point scale. Saltz said those answering with a six or seven indicated strong agreement, or a “topbox response rate.” Anyone answering with a one or two demonstrated opposition, or a “bottom-box response rate.” Eighty-two percent gave a
top-box response when asked if the college’s tuition was a good value, compared to 2 percent giving a bottom-box response. Top-box responses on the subject increased from 46 percent in a similar survey conducted by Comiskey on the college’s behalf in March 2013. The school was perceived to have a positive image by 73 percent of those surveyed in December, who gave a top-box response – an increase from 58 percent in the 2013 survey. Two percent of participants gave a bottom-box response in the December survey. When asked if they felt it was important to offer bachelor’s degrees in fields where job opportunities exist, 76 percent in December gave a topbox response and 8 percent gave a bottom-box response. Other takeaways from the recent survey include: • Agreement that College of

To the Editor: What am I missing? The Glen Ellyn Park District director, Dave Harris, is quoted in the Glen Ellyn Suburban Life as saying, “The intention of the Park District is not to resurrect a pool.” The Board President Gary Mayo was quoted in the same article as saying, “The community has clearly spoken ... The issue is now dead.”
So why is the Park District spending $3,500 on a survey to “better understand why its indoor pool referendum was defeated”? Why throw money away on a survey to understand a dead issue? Why are the Park District representatives saying one thing and doing another? The vote was no! That is all they need to understand! $3,500 saved!

A message of thanks from the food pantry On behalf of our clients at the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry, we would once again like to thank everyone in our community for your ongoing support. As you know, the food pantry plays a vital role in Glen Ellyn and surrounding areas by assisting low-income residents, and those in crisis, with the most basic of needs to nourish themselves and their families. COMMUNITY The year 2014 has shown an VOICE unprecedented demand on our Susan food pantry. We have been forPapierski tunate to meet these demands for a number of reasons: • Through the generosity of individuals, local organizations, businesses and churches who contribute funds and in-kind food donations, it was possible to maintain an inventory of healthy food choices for our clients throughout the year. • As a result of our partnerships with local retailers, our food pantry has been blessed with the opportunity to participate in the Direct Connect food recovery program with six area retailers. This program, which has been truly monumental to our food pantry, has enabled us to distribute more than 16,000 pounds of healthy foods, including fresh produce, meats, dairy and bakery products, to our clients on a weekly basis. • Because of our partner relationship with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry has been able to purchase all other necessary food and personal care items on a weekly basis at a greatly reduced cost, which optimizes our spending dollars. More astounding are the statistics for 2014. The number of pounds of food distributed to our clients increased to 860,000 pounds, which represents a 91 percent increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, by the end of the year we will have served an approximate 22,000 individuals, which is 25 percent more than in 2013. How do we do it? We are blessed with the support of our 350 volunteers, community organizations, local businesses, retail partners and donors. Simply put … you make an amazing difference in the life of our food pantry. However, our shelves are still emptied each and every week and the demand for food assistance does not decrease. We depend on our donors and volunteers to help us in our mission of making hunger history. We welcome you to visit our pantry during our operating hours to see how we are impacting those in need. Thank you once again for being part of this amazing journey to help fight hunger in our community.
Susan Papierski is executive director of the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry, which serves Glen Ellyn, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Wheaton, Lombard and Lisle.

College of DuPage President Robert Breuder gives his State of the College address Dec. 10.
During a State of the College address Dec. 10, College of DuPage President Robert Breuder requested legislators consider providing the school with relief from Freedom of Information Act requests. This is inappropriate, especially during a period when the college is under prolonged public scrutiny for a variety of reasons, and it sends the message that College of DuPage’s administration is ambivalent to public inquiry and transparency. Congratulations to the many local businesses currently celebrating success. Elevate Gallery and Studio opened in the fall, and Drury Design, Veiled by Cha Cha, Marcel’s Culinary Experience and 2Toots Train Whistle Grill have all received recent accolades.

SOUND OFF
Sound Off reflects opinions, not facts I’d like to remind readers of the Sound Off column that, as the guidelines clearly state the comments “should not be taken as fact.” Several recent comments about the Glen Ellyn Park District, which all appear to be from the same person, are misleading at best and, in some cases, simply not true. For the record, a routine exit poll survey is being conducted, based on support from a majority of the board, and will cost about 10 cents per resident; it is not a “pool survey.” The proposed turf at Newton Park represents the best price negotiated by a purchasing cooperative commonly used by public agencies, and is far from “the most expensive turf option.” It has yet to be decided which features will be included. I would encourage all readers to contact the Park District, or visit their website, for accurate information.

Freedom of speech must be upheld I’m going to start my own protest right here, and it’s against people in the western suburbs making ignorant comments about the rights of other people. Can you imagine what kind of riots there would if people could not pass judgment on people from other ethnic and social economic backgrounds? It would make Ferguson look like Disneyland.
I certainly agree with last week’s article “Officer was doing his job.” The media needs to stop building this up and antagonizing people. They are somewhat responsible for all the Lombard leaf sweep protests. The officer was doing is a good idea Batavia has a leaf pick up his job. program that I wish Lombard would copy. GLEN ELLYN – Despite not being able to cast a ballot themselves, a group of eighthgrade students at Hadley Junior High School are looking at ways to improve voter turnout. Students made presentations Dec. 16 to village officials about how to get more people to come to the polls, as part of the district’s problem-based learning program. The students are in Brian Bonkowski’s social studies class. Bonkowski said the issue was brought to his atten-
tion by village Trustee Diane McGinley. In December the Civic Betterment Party election, 593 total votes were cast. Party President Erik Ford said although that number seems small, it’s “significantly higher” than the turnout four years prior. “We’re making progress, but it’s still dismally small numbers,” he said. Students started their research in November, looking into trends of voter turnout across the country and ways communities have tried to improve it. They sent surveys to adults to determine whether they vot-

ed in the party’s election and what reasons they might have for not voting. Ford and party nominating committee Chairwoman Vanessa Pierce served as guest speakers. “They have been busy,” Bonkowski said of the students. Students presented their plans to seven community members involved in politics: McGinley; Ford; Pierce; John Mulherin, president of the Glen Ellyn Public Library Board of Trustees; Bob McClow, treasurer of the library board; Dean Clark, a village trustee; and Margie Mohrhusen, a former school psychol-
ogist and political consultant. Bonkowski said he was surprised at the student’s response. He thought since they were about four years away from being eligible to vote, they might not be interested in the project. “They’ve been more invested in it than I expected,” he said. Alex Frazer, a student of Bonkowski’s, and his group came up with the idea for a $10 fine for any registered voter who doesn’t vote in an election. “People are pretty serious when money is involved, and that should tell them how serious this is,” he said.
Alex said he felt the project improved his teamwork and social skills. “It was a long process, but I learned so much,” he said. Other ideas given at the presentation included increased advertising of the party’s town meeting and accepting ballots via email. Ford said there were cost-implementation issues with some of the proposals, but others were worth considering. “They clearly understand the problem, and there were some interesting solutions,” Ford said. “Their thinking is all in the right direction.”

MiMi combines proprietary Freddie Mac data with current local market data to assess where each single-family housing market is relative to its own long-term stable range by looking at home purchase applications, payment-to-income ratios (changes in home purchasing power based on house prices, mortgage rates and household income), proportion of on-time mortgage payments in each market, and the local employment picture. The four indicators are combined to create a composite MiMi value for each market. Monthly, MiMi uses this data to show, at a glance, where each market stands relative to its own stable range of housing activity. MiMi also indicates how each market is trending, whether it is moving closer to, or further away from, its stable range. A market can fall outside its stable range by being too weak to generate enough demand for a well-balanced housing market or by overheating to an unsustainable level of activity. For more detail on MiMi see the FAQs. MiMi is released at 10 a.m. EDT monthly. The most current version can be found at FreddieMac.com/mimi.

Hilltoppers come up short against Warriors By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Stringing together four consistent quarters has been a bit of an issue for a developing Glenbard West boys basketball team and that problem reared its head Monday in the opener of the Hilltoppers Holiday tournament. The home team watched a five-point advantage early in the fourth quarter vanish in an eventual 58-55 loss to Willowbrook. “We didn’t defend well down the stretch,” Glenbard West coach Tim Hoder said, “and they hit some big shots. We have to keep working. We have to be better defensively and we have to work to get good shots. It’s disappointing.” Justin Pierce totaled 20 points and eight rebounds before leaving in the late stages of the fourth quarter with a finger injury. Alex Passi scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half and Kalen Starkey finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. The squad, which also took on Northridge Prep on Tuesday, is back in action Friday to close out pool play with a contest against St. Francis. Crossover games between the two pools happens Saturday. Glenbard West was coming off its first West Suburban Silver win of the season, a 6956 decision against Downers Grove North on Dec. 19. Starkey led three players in double figures with 18 points. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK JENNA BRAMBORA
Glenbard South Senior | Girls basketball
Erica Benson - ebenson@ shawmedia.com
Why Brambora was selected: Brambora led all scorers with 16 points in the Raiders 57-45 win over conference rival Riverside-Brookfield. Glenbard South guard Jenna Brambora is a major part of an experienced Raiders’ core as the senior is in her fourth season on the varsity. On Dec. 18, she played a key role in the team staying undefeated in the Metro Suburban Conference, scoring 11 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter in a 57-45 victory over Riverside-Brookfield. Brambora, the Glen Ellyn Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Glen Ellyn Suburban Life sports reporter Scott Schmid about the win and Glenbard South’s fast start to the season.
Schmid: Knowing that winning conference is always a goal, how big was that win over R-B? Brambora: It was definitely a really big win. R-B always gives us good competition and we’ve had a rivalry for the past couple years. That was a big game for us.
Schmid: What have been the keys to the team’s fast start (9-1 over the first 10 games)? This Athlete of the Week is brought to you by
Brambora: I think we are doing a really good job of playing as a team. We are sharing the basketball and giving everyone opportunities to score and really cracking down on defense. We are a team with a lot of speed and hustle and heart. Schmid: How much of an advantage is it to have so much experience on your team? Brambora: It’s really important. It gives us an edge. We all know what we are doing and we don’t crack as easily under pressure. And if we get down, we are resilient and able to come back. We know how important the little things are.
Schmid: In what ways have you changed from being a freshman on the varsity to now? Brambora: I think I’ve become more confident and more of a leader on the court. I really looked up to all of the older girls on the team and now it’s my responsibility to be a leader for the younger kids.
Glenbard South wins holiday tourney opener Glenbard South’s next league game comes on Jan. 9 versus IC Catholic. The Raiders will also play Willowbrook in a nonconference affair on Jan. 6.
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA After being tabbed as the No. 6 seed, Glenbard South kicked off the Wheaton North Bill Neibch Classic with a 5036 decision over West Aurora on Monday. The win was the team’s 10th of the young season. Sydney Bauman had 16 points to lead the way and Payton Carli contributed 11 points for the Raiders, who led 35-16 at halftime. The 16-team tournament will wrap up on Friday and Saturday. Before the tourney, Glenbard South upended Riverside-Brookfield 57-45 in a key Metro Suburban conference clash on Dec. 18. The squad remains undefeated in league play, improving to 4-0, while the Bulldogs fell into second place. Jenna Brambora was the
