GLEN ELLYN – Incumbent trustee Pete Ladesic will attempt to win his third term with the village board in April by running outside the Civic Betterment Party. Ladesic, who works as a contractor, filed to run as an independent for the spring elections, wherein three seats on the village board are up for grabs. When he first won his seat on the board in 2007, Ladesic ran outside the Civic Betterment Party. During his re-election campaign, he ran as a candidate with the party. He started his third campaign the same way, but finished fourth and missed the cut to be on the ballot. Ladesic said he decided to run as an independent to ensure the proposals he’s been working on are seen through to the end. “I think that we’ve made some real headway … but I’m nervous that if I don’t stay on the board and shepherd some of these things through, they’ll fall through,” he said. The main issues Ladesic hopes to tackle during a third term include driving economic development and finishing the plan for a railroad overpass or underpass in Glen Ellyn. He also hopes

Ladesic felt his chances of winning re-election in the December election of the Civic Betterment Party were adversely influenced by “a number of people from a special interest group or two.” He thinks he will have a better chance at winning with a greater number of people showing up to the polls in April. “There was an extremely low voter turnout for the Civic Betterment Party,” Ladesic said. “I wasn’t going to let that stray me from running again.” The concept of the Civic Betterment Party is not to seek re-election, according to Erik Ford, president of the Civic Betterment Party. But when Ladesic expressed a desire to run for a second and third term, he was allowed to. “He’s a qualified candidate. He has every right to run at the town

meeting,” Ford said. Now Ford is wondering why Ladesic is continuing his campaign despite not winning at the December Civic Betterment election. “It’s perplexing that he would choose to go through our process, only to circumvent it when he’s not successful,” Ford said. “He either believes in our Civic Betterment process, or he doesn’t.” Ladesic received 326 votes in the 2014 Civic Betterment Party election. Ford said that’s more votes than he received in 2010, when he received the most votes of all candidates. “It’s not like he lost any supporters. It wasn’t because of a fall-off in his totals,” Ford said. The winning candidates from the 2014 election were John Kenwood, Mark Senak and Carol Fontana, who finished with 407, 349 and 347 votes, respectively. Ladesic said he has no quarrels with the Civic Betterment Party and only wants to see through his initiatives.

DeRonne said she believes the collection is good for the community and the authors. Matt Joswick, a Glen Ellyn writer who has two books in the collection, said he enjoys being able to get his name out through the library. “I’ve been a storyteller my whole life,” he said. “And I enjoy people reading my stories.” Joswick donated his 2008 book, “That Funny Empty Feeling,” and his 2013 title, “39 Letters,” to the collection. For now, submissions are only being accepted in print form, but DeRonne said she hopes to expand to electronic books in the future.

The Emerging Author Collection at the Glen Ellyn Public Library highlights authors with self-published books.

GLEN ELLYN – The Glen Ellyn Public Library is working to help self-published local writers with its new Emerging Author Collection. The collection is on the library’s second floor. Adult Department Director Susan DeRonne said it was the result of more and more authors self-publishing their work. “I think it’s a movement that’s not going to go away,” she said. Readers had been coming to the library, asking to have those titles displayed, and the library agreed. The program began Jan. 2, DeRonne said. Right now the library has a “limited number” of books in the collection, she said, with 14 in total. “I’d just like to see it take off,” she said. “It’s an idea most libraries have not done.” To be considered for the collection, authors must live in or write about the Chicago suburbs and books must be donated by authors or publishers. According to the library, works will be included in the

Katie Vogel, sixth-grader at Hadley Junior High, told the board she’s in favor of getting rid of portable classrooms. She was a student at Churchill and said she didn’t enjoy her time in those classrooms because they were cold and didn’t make her feel safe. Kelly Hane, a parent of two Churchill students, said she “wholeheartedly” supports removing portable classrooms at the schools.

Full-day kindergarten The board also is expected to give a definite answer regarding the future of full-day kindergarten in the district. The board has spent the past several months gathering information to make a decision on whether to move forward with this. The district hosted two listening sessions recently to get community input on full-day kindergarten. Erika Krehbiel, chief communications officer for the district, said the biggest themes presented during the sessions were to have the district schools be competitive and do something about space constraints. But overall, comments have

Board President John Kenwood agreed there was support but that cost was a major concern for people. Officials have said to move forward with this plan, two referenda would be needed: One for the building and one for operations. Kenwood said he would like to have more specifics about what a daily schedule for the students would look like and develop a more concrete plan before moving forward. “I feel like I’m voting on something that really doesn’t have a lot of meat to it,” Kenwood said. Gordon said a group of teachers would get together after the board approves the measure to determine the schedule for students. The board will vote on both issues at its next meeting. The board will not be voting on a specific option for full-day kindergarten but will continue discussions about which was the community feels is the best to proceed. Community engagement is expected to take between three and five months.

GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard Township High School District 87 is considering a policy change that would prevent students from bringing their own devices from home for in-class tablet learning. District Community Relations Coordinator Peg Mannion said the policy is being looked at for two reasons. The first is that only 6 percent of all freshmen – fewer than 200 students – are actually bringing their own devices to school. All others are going through the district’s iPad rental program. “Very few students brought their own devices,” she said. The second reason is that some of the devices being brought from home do not have updated software or meet the district’s system requirements. According to the current policy, if a student brings a tablet from home, district information technology staff cannot work on those devices to fix an issue and can only work on devices rented through the district. “There were just too many challenges in making sure they were in the same place with the rentals,” Mannion said.

Police charge Glen Ellyn trio in robberies Threesome involved in crimes throughout DuPage County SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GLEN ELLYN – Three Glen Ellyn men have been charged in connection with several robberies around DuPage County, the state’s attorney’s office announced in a news release. Justus Brantley, 18, is charged with aggravated robbery and home invasion. Quincy Skanes, Justus 21, is charged with ag- Brantley gravated robbery, home invasion and armed robbery. Johnny Holmes III, 23, is charged with four counts of armed robbery. Officials said the three men were involved Quincy in several robberies and Skanes a home invasion in Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Lombard and Carol Stream between Dec. 31 and Jan. 26. Holmes and Skanes were originally arrested after a Jan. 26 robbery at a 7-Eleven in Carol Johnny Stream. Officials said Holmes III Holmes entered the store with a gun and demanded money from the clerk while Skanes drove a getaway vehicle. Glen Ellyn police found Holmes and were able to gather information to support charges in the other robberies and home invasion, the release stated. The home invasion occurred Jan. 1 in Lombard. According to the release, one man choked a woman inside an apartment while a second man stole several items. The two men entered another apartment and stole more items, including a television. Brantley and Skanes are being held on $750,000 bonds. Holmes is being held on a $500,000 bond. The next court appearance for all three men is scheduled March 2.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren find support and success More than 2.5 million grandparents in America are raising their grandchildren, and almost 100,000 throughout Illinois do so, according to AARP. For many grandparents, the challenges they face in being caregivers can be numerous and complex. To help them cope with those challenges and succeed, Metropolitan Family Services Du-Page Center COMMUNITY offers Grandparents Raising VOICE Grandchildren. Ann Grandparents Raising Grandchildren is a drop-in Pinkney support group from 6 to 8 p.m. monthly on the second and fourth Mondays at Metropolitan’s DuPage Center, 222 E. Willow Ave. in Wheaton. The group, which has been helping families for more than 20 years, provides emotional support for grandparents as well as links to resources such as counseling and other services. There is no cost, and attendees can come as often as they like. Childcare is offered for grandchildren ages 3 to 13. The group starts with a half-hour pizza party for the grandparents and grandchildren, followed by the support group for the grandparents. Grandparents gain many benefits by participating, starting by learning they are not alone. “The grandparents get to connect with others who are experiencing what they are experiencing – their phase of life puts them out of touch of most of their peers,” said Kelly Reid, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren facilitator. Getting to share with and learn from peers helps grandparents deal with special challenges they encounter, such as the fact that many of their grandchildren have experienced emotional or physical abuse at the hands of their parents, because of parents’ struggles with mental illness, drug addiction or alcoholism. Grandparents also have their own matters to deal with, such as health issues or limited finances, as many are on fixed incomes. Defending Glen Ellyn Park District I don’t understand the person who keeps complaining about the Glen Ellyn Park District taxes in the Sound Off column. That’s a pretty small piece of my property tax bill, and it seems like we get a lot for that money. My friends in Wheaton pay almost twice as much to their park district. Even Lombard is higher, and they don’t offer nearly as much as we have here in Glen Ellyn. I’m more concerned about our school taxes – that’s where most of my money goes!

Sitta, was born Feb. 11, 1931, in Chicago, IL and passed away Feb. 5, 2015, in Bradenton, FL, just shy of her 84th birthday. She was the second daughter of Joseph and Antonie Vrla, immigrants from Czechoslovakia. She grew up in Chicago, attended Morton Jr. College and married her sweetheart Stanley M. Sitta on Sept 8, 1951. They were residents of Wheaton, IL for over 40 years. Zdenka was a wonderful homemaker and mother to four children, Ellen (John) Beckley Hoefer of Kansas City, KS, Janet (Mike) Schraer of Bradenton, FL, Joe (Donna) of VA Beach, VA, and James (Liz) of St. Charles, IL. She is survived by 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; nieces, Karyn (Chuck) Fischer, Jenny Smith, and Nina (Larry) Biddinger; greatnephew, Adam Fischer; and sisterin-law and brother-in-law, Camille and Yarmil Pekarek of Sun City, AZ. Glenbard West alumnus to address serious subject in upcoming play By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – A Glenbard West alumnus will star in an upcoming play that deals with rape on college campuses. Michael Holding will play Cooper in “Really Really” at the Athenaeum Theatre in Chicago. The show opens this weekend and will Michael run through midHolding March. Holding spoke to Suburban Life reporter Evan Shields about the play and its controversial subject matter. Shields: Can you tell me a little bit about the show and who you play in it? Holding: One of the cast kind of came up with the idea that it’s “Lord of the Flies” meets this other play called “This is our Youth.” … “Really Really” deals with a rape that happens on a college campus. … And basically the audience is left wondering through most of the show who’s telling the truth and did the rape really happen. Overall it kind of deals with our generation. … The play was written in 2012, so it’s fairly new. And the playwright himself just talked about how he wrote it from his college experiences. My character in particular is very much a Van Wilder, where he just kind of wants to stay in school, he loves the partying lifestyle, he just wants to hang out with the guys, drink beer and stay in school as long as he can because there’s no pressure for him because it’s really stress free. And he’s kind of scared to enter the real world after college. And he’s the best friend of the main character who is accused of rape. Shields: This concept has been in the news a lot lately. During rehearsal, do you ever feel like it’s a touchy subject or do you ever feel like you need to hold back at times? Holding: It’s obviously a serious subject matter and definitely during rehearsals so far, there’s been some very tense moments and some moments that are very real. And there are things that happen on stage that are very, very real, and I think may or may not make the audience uncomfortable. I think we’re holding a mirror up to them and saying ‘This is what’s happening in our society right now. What is being done about it?’ So there definitely have been some intense moments during rehearsals.

And us, as actors, we have to kind of build up this comfortability between each other because we are exploring these serious issues and very personal subject matters. But as far as in the performance goes, I don’t think we’re going to hold back at all. We’re trying to do our best to depict a real-life representation of what goes on and what happens and how serious it is. Because I think the more real you make it, people are going to take that more seriously. At times, it is very much in your face, which I kind of like, because it puts the audience in the position to make their own decision and judgments about characters. Shields: Overall, you would say you’re a fan of this show? Holding: Yeah, I am. Like I said earlier, it’s relevant with all the college rape cases that are going on at Columbia [University], [University of Virginia] and now at Vanderbilt and even going back to the Duke lacrosse scandal that happened. It’s a subject matter that’s becoming more prominent. I think it’s something that’s always occurred, but was swept under the rug a little bit. We need to bring this to the forefront, specifically our generation. … This play, I think it’s great we kind of delve into how do we deal with situations like this. … It’s very important. I think people need to see something like this and it’s going to get the message across that this isn’t something to be taken lightly.

We don’t need to spend tens of millions for a service that a tiny percentage of people will utilize. This feels like the pool referendum all over again.

Keep kindergarten as is In a community survey two years ago, the [Glen Ellyn] Park District asked about offloading either Main Street or Spring Avenue buildings. We currently conduct preschool at both places. Parents are comfortable there. We have an obvious solution to our (fake) problem! I’ve heard excuses – the buildings are not good enough. Well, somehow they’re good enough for lots of families already. And it would cost way less to update them than it would cost for the new buildings D-41 seeks. We have a huge opportunity to leverage an existing community asset. Separate governmental bodies could work together to provide efficiencies for taxpayers instead of always operating in a vacuum to taxpayer detriment. Let’s start collaborating and stop inventing new excuses to take as much money as you can.

Fuego cantina celebrates Mexican favorites BROOKFIELD – Directly across from the Metra rail crossing, on the corner of Grand Boulevard and Brookfield Avenue, sits 1-year-old Fuego, a quaint respite from the everyday. In a cleverly designed building, the traditionally decorated Fuego is a cantina in the truest sense, a handy place to stop for a margarita or a cold beer and some tasty Mexican classics. My friend and I grabbed a small table by one of the expansive windows in the relaxed space accented by stone. We began our meal with a basket of light and salty chips and salsa, and an order of the Ceviche de Fuego, a chilled blend of chopped shrimp, tomatoes, onions, peppers, cilantro and lime – lots of lime. Elegantly served in a tall martini glass, the seafood dish was a refreshing and tasty start to our experience. I opted for the carnita dinner, featuring slow-roasted pork sauteed with onions to create some oh-so-yummy caramelized edges. It’s like the Mexican answer to a classic pulled pork, with complex seasonings and just enough bite. My friend ordered the chili relleno dinner, a fresh poblano pepper filled with Mexican cheeses. It was enclosed in a flaky crust, similar to a puff pastry, baked to a golden brown. But the real star was the homemade ranchero sauce. Smoky and rich, this blend of tomatoes, peppers and herbs is cooked a long time – until it turns thick, deep red and delicious. (The chef really should bottle the sauce and sell it at the bar.) And although we were stuffed, the dessert menu was calling, so we ordered the churro bites. They were decadent and sweet, fried crisp and covered in a syrupy cinnamon sugar, with warm chocolate sauce for dipping. A variety of classic Mexican favorites, from tacos to flautas, rounds out the menu at Fuego. Quench your thirst

GLEN ELLYN – Even as his Glenbard South team fell to 4-10 on the season, Wade Hardtke believed the Raiders would turn things around. And that faith has been rewarded as Glenbard South made it above the .500 mark for the first time all winter with a 64-44 victory against Fenton on Feb. 6. “It’s been a long climb,” Hardtke said. “You have to give the kids credit, they certainly could have folded it up early on but they kept working hard and kept getting better. We still haven’t hit our peak yet, we’ve just got to keep working.” The win was the team’s seventh in a row, a streak that began Jan. 16 with a 73-53 decision against Aurora Central Catholic. The Raiders also improved to 6-2 in the Metro Suburban conference. “Our schedule didn’t help us early on in terms of the win-loss column,” Hardtke said. “But that was one of the things we kept talking about, it got us battle-tested. Now we are starting to see the fruits of that labor.” Thanks to seven offensive rebounds, Glenbard South jumped out to a 14-11 advantage after the opening eight minutes and then extended that margin to 34-16 by halftime as Billy Bair scored eight points in the second quarter. The visitors never got closer than 17 the remainder of the game. The home team produced another balanced scoring output with Kyle Carli’s 13 points and eight rebounds leading the way. Povilas Riauba had 12 points and Billy finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. “We knew going into the season that we were going to be athletic,” Hardtke said. “And the nice thing about athleticism is that you don’t have to count on just one person every night. When we have balanced scoring, that is when we are at our best.” The Raiders travel to take on Rolling Meadows in a nonconference affair Feb. 14 before returning home Feb. 17 for a matchup with IC Catholic.

And I used to be a wide receiver. It was insane.” Then on Tuesday, Pierce was at it again, scoring 28 points to lead the Hilltoppers to a 71-59 nonconference win against Wheaton Warrenville South. “We were able to get him going,” Glenbard West coach

But the Hilltoppers sliced the deficit to 11-8 by the end of the first and pulled even at 23 apiece at intermission. utes, including 22 in the fourth quarter, to slowly pull away. “At the beginning of the year, I think seven of our first 10 losses were by eight points or less,” Pierce said. “So we are learning to play in these close games. We lost a tough one on Saturday [a 37-34 loss to York], but Friday was our first close win. We’ve gotten so much better throughout the season. Composure at the end of games, that’s the most important thing.” In addition to Pierce, Alex Passi scored 14 points, Gould chipped in with 10 and Kalen Starkey finished with eight points and eight rebounds. “The kids did a nice stop stepping up and making free throws,” Hoder said. “At times we’ve had trouble doing that, we’ve had stretches where we haven’t shot well at the end of games.”

In fact, after a Feb. 5 win against IC Catholic, they improved to 21-3 with a perfect 11-0 mark in the MSC. “Obviously it’s a good group of kids and I’ve had most of them up since they were freshmen,” Fonda said. “It’s not a surprise, that was our expectation, but it is also nice to follow through on our goals and to conquer them. Their effort has been tremendous throughout the season. No matter who we are playing, they bring the same passion, the same energy. It’s a group I love coaching.” The squad was awarded with the No. 4 seed in the very challenging Orr sectional that includes defending state champion Montini, as well as with Marshall and North Lawndale. Glenbard South is at the St. Joseph regional and will face either Noble/Bulls or Noble Street Charter in its playoff opener. With a win, the Raiders could see the host Chargers in the regional final. “Being 21-3 and being a four seed is mind-blowing,” Fonda said. “But obviously the state sets the sectional before we have our records. It is going to be competitive and that’s what you want. I’m excited,

Schmid: What were your overall thoughts about the win over Fenton, which upped your team’s record to 11-10. Carli: We have 6-5 Billy Bair and he destroyed the boards. He played like a man and we just gave him the ball in the post and he knew what to do with it. In the second half, we put the guards in

the post because we had a little height advantage and we went to work there. That really helps when we have so many taller guys getting boards.

Schmid: How nice is it to climb over the .500 mark? Carli: It’s an amazing feeling. This year, we started off really slow. It feels so much better being on the other side.

Schmid: What has been the keys during this stretch? Carli: We are playing better as a team and we are passing the ball around better. We have different guys who are scoring over 10 points.

Schmid: How does your team keep this momentum going? Carli: We’ve got to stay positive and just get to work whenever we are here.

Competing at the Fenton Class 2A regional Feb. 7, the Raiders finished in fourth place with 107.5 points and sent four individuals on to the Antioch sectional. Leading the way was sophomore Numan Ayhan, who captured the title at 195 pounds. He posted a major decision in the semifinals and then picked up a first-round pin in the final. Michael Bertone was the runner-up at 132 and Vince Marra came in second at 145. Also qualifying was Jordan Drake, who came in third at 170. Finishing fourth were Dakota Marino at 138, Ernesto Galvan at 152 and Anthony Stramaglia at 182 pounds. Hanna Johnson was fifth at 120.

The Glenbard South boys basketball team has been on a nice run of late, and junior guard Kyle Carli has been a key contributor during that stretch. On Feb. 6, he scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Raiders moved over the .500 mark for the first time all season with a victory against Fenton. Carli, the Glen Ellyn Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Glen Ellyn Suburban Life sports reporter Scott Schmid about the win and the squad’s recent hot streak.

Glenbard West’s Charles Faber emerged as the champion at 106 pounds at the Leyden Class 3A regional Feb. 7. The sophomore notched a 4-2 win against Nick Donovan of Glenbard East in the final. Faber will be joined at the Glenbard North sectional by two of his teammates. Darien Kaufmann was the runner-up at 285 after dropping a 1-0 decision in the final, and Nathan Orrison came in third at 182 after notching a pin in his final match. Finishing fourth and just missing out on advancement were Michael Mutton at 113 and Peyton Nimsakont at 126. As a team, the Hilltoppers finished sixth with 66 points.
