GLEN ELLYN – The Glen Ellyn School District 41 Board of Education unanimously voted Monday to extend its contract with the Glen Ellyn Education Association by two years in order to increase the length of the elementary school day. The board entered into a memorandum of understanding with the association to extend the collective bargaining agreement from June 30, 2016 to June 30, 2018. Board President John Kenwood said association officials signed the memorandum Monday, and association members approved the agreement March 4. Association representatives did not respond to requests for comment. Superintendent Paul Gordon said he’s happy with the agreement to lengthen the school day. “I’m very pleased with our collaboration, with the work we did on this side, to put to an end to the negotiations,” he said. Board members said a longer teaching day was a goal of previous boards during the negotiation of the last collective bargaining agreement, but that it wasn’t able to be included then.
“I think we have a good contract now, and we’re focused on moving us forward,” board member Dean Elger said. Board member Cathryn Wilkinson said she feels the district will have a lot to gain from the longer day. “Even though it’s an increase in minutes, I think it will prove to be a reduction of stress and pressure,” she said. Board Vice President Drew Ellis said the topic of a longer teaching day came up multiple times during pre-negotiation discussions with teachers. “I was struck by the repeated theme, that teachers kept saying they didn’t have enough time,” he said. The new school day will be introduced next school year and will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. – an increase of 35 minutes from the current day of 9 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Karen Carlson said the new day will consist of two three-hour blocks of

teaching. Each will include 2.5 hours of core instruction, such as social studies, literacy, science and math, and 30 minutes of special classes, such as art, music and physical education. This will provide 175 more minutes of learning time for first to third grade and 25 more minutes for fourth and fifth grade. The half-day kindergarten schedule will run from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. for the morning session and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. for the afternoon session – an increase from the 2.5 hours currently allotted. “We have very little time. Adding 30 minutes to it, I think, is great for them,” said board member Joe Bochenski. Board members said the contract will call for an increase in bus transportation fees by $40,000, which will be the only additional expense the district will incur. The new day also will cut physical education to four days a week. “That was disappointing, but you have to make priorities,” Kenwood said. Sarah Mical, a Glen Ellyn resident with three children in the district, said she was against the longer school day because of the extra work it would create for students. “These children are already working at a rigorous level,” she said. She added her children wake up at 8 a.m. and getting them up earlier would be difficult. Glen Ellyn resident Jennifer Rath said she was opposed to the way the negotiations between administrators and teachers happened, because residents weren’t aware they were going on. “We don’t even know as a community which board members were representing us as a community,” she said. Rath said rumors began to surface about what the longer day would look like, and residents had hoped the district would address them head-on. Glen Ellyn resident Jeff Cooper, who is running as a board candidate in the April election, asked the board which of its members took part in negotiations with the association. Kenwood said all members of the board were involved in discussions during closed sessions.

“totally shocked and surprised” when it was announced she had won. She heard the presenter vaguely start talking about a business and then started to realize their accomplishments sounded very familiar. “I thought, ‘Wait a minute, are they talking about me?’” Degen said. Degen said she feels like she has to be active in the community in order to continue to have customers come in. She said she’s honored to receive the award because it reflects well on her staff. “It means that the past 10 years of hard work by me and my team has finally been recognized,” she said. She also said the business life can be difficult because of competition with larger chain organizations. “It was nice because being a small business owner, being an independent, isn’t easy,” she said. “It was very rewarding.”

GLEN ELLYN – The Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce has named its Citizen of the Year and Business of the Year as part of its annual Community Awards Breakfast. Jim Rasins was named Citizen of the Year and Chicks ‘n Salsa Mexican Grill was named the Business of the Year. The chamber also announced several other awards, including Nonprofit of the Year, educators of the year for districts 41, 87 and 89 and Senior Citizen of the Year. Mike Formento, the director of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce, said the award has been handed out for the past 46 years. The award takes into consideration the volunteer work of the individual and work they have done to make the community better. Nominations were provided in the months proceeding the event, and Formento said they received 15 nominations for the top four awards given out. The other organizations are responsible for selecting their own winner. Rasins, the former auditor of DuPage County, has volunteered with the Fourth of July committee for more than 30 years, including spending some time as the chairman of the committee. He also developed the Cardboard Regatta, the Picnic in the Park and has been the announcer for the Fourth of July parade. Rasins said he did not know before the ceremony he would be named the winner. When asked if he wanted to say a few words after being named the winner, Rasins said he was overcome with emotion and unable to say anything. “Here’s a politician who turned down a chance to speak at a microphone,” Rasins said. “It was very emotional for me.” Rasins said he was very humbled to receive the award, and he’s awestruck by the contributions previous winners have made to the community. “It is truly an honor to receive the

Village selects engineer for first Legislators await COD response on audit request phase of pedestrian underpass By EVAN SHIELDS SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

GLEN ELLYN – Legislators are waiting for the College of DuPage to prove its commitment to a state audit of the school’s finances. The audit was proposed by state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, after the college Board of Trustees approved a $762,000 buyout for its president, Robert Breuder. Ives wanted the state auditor general to look at how the school has spent state funding over the past three years. Ives introduced a resolution in the state House of Representatives, which gained traction and is sponsored by 57 representatives. College Treasurer Tom Glaser announced Feb. 3 the college would agree to the audit and wanted to move forward with it. But the audit would have to be paid for by the college, according to legislators. As of Monday, legislators had not heard from the Board of Trustees about whether it will agree to pay for the audit. Fourteen legislators sent

GLEN ELLYN – The village board has approved an engineering firm to help with designs for an upgraded pedestrian railroad underpass at Taylor Avenue. The village agreed to use Alfred Benesch and Co. of Chicago for the engineering for the first phase of the project, which is expected to cost $90,000. The phase will include everything up to designing the actual underpass, Village Manager Mark Franz said. The work will include talking with officials with the Union Pacific Railroad, identifying a method of construction and several other items involved with planning out the space. Village Engineer Bob Minix said Alfred Benesch had “excellent qualifications,” having previously worked with structural engineering, railroads and bridges and had a schedule that was “a little aggressive.” But they were not the lowest bidder. Rempe Sharpe Consulting Engineers of Geneva submitted a bid of
$75,000 for the first phase of the project and a second-phase bid of $76,000 – much lower than all the other bids submitted. The second phase will include the construction planning. There was some concern about Rempe Sharpe’s ability to handle alternative proposals on the construction phase. Minix said Phase I will set the direction the project will take in Phase II, and he didn’t believe Rempe Sharpe’s proposals showed they could handle that. Trustees voted 4-3 to approve using Alfred Benesch for the first phase. “One of the things that impressed me about Benesch is their timing,” Franz said. “They certainly have an accelerated time schedule compared to some of these other proposals, and that attracted us as well.” Trustee Tim Elliott said he had “absolutely, positively no problem” going with the lowest bidder on the project. “This doesn’t strike me as an incredibly complex project,” he said. “They are substantially more cost-effective than the other projects.”

POLICE REPORTS
Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Link between CKD and hearing loss?
Q: I heard that there is a connection between chronic kidney problems and hearing loss. Is this true?
A: Yes this is true. he National Kidney Foundation has published Dr. Terri Lightbody indings in the (630) 580-5777 American Journal of Kidney Diseases that found those with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) reported some level of hearing loss. Nearly 30% of those showed severe hearing loss. Study Author Professor David C. Harris states “he link can be explained by structural and functional similarities between tissues in the inner ear and in the kidney. Additionally, toxins that accumulate in kidney failure can damage the nerves, including those in the inner ear. Another reason for this connection is that kidney disease and hearing loss share common risk factors, including diabetes, high-
blood pressure and advanced age.” he National Kidney Foundation recommends that those with CKD have their hearing evaluated to ensure a better quality of life. Ensuring better quality of life can strengthen ties with family and friends, raise your spirits, help you feel better about yourself and keep your mind sharp. hose who are exposed to risk factors such as CKD, high-blood pressure, smoking, obesity or family history of hearing loss are encouraged to get a baseline hearing test from an Audiologist. Hearing evaluations are typically covered by most insurance plans. March is National Kidney Month. More information about Chronic Kidney Diseases can be found at www.kidney.org, including the study referenced above.
About the author: Dr. Terri Lightbody is a nationally known Audiologist and has her private practice at Danada Professional Center. Dr. Lightbody is the recipient of the 2014 Wheaton Star Award, in recognition of her volunteer and community service work. She is a member of the Wheaton Lions Club, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping those with hearing loss and low vision. She is the forerunner in today’s most advanced hearing devices.

• UNDERPASS Continued from page 4 Trustee Diane McGinley said an engineering firm bidding on this type of project would have to know what they are doing. “I just have a hard time believing a company that does $6 million projects doesn’t have the capability to do alternatives,” she said.
Trustee Pete Ladesic said the project is a safety issue that must be addressed in an expedient matter. “This is a must. … So I think the $90,000 is an expense I’d be willing to risk,” he said. “I think every day that underpass is there, the community takes a serious risk.” Village President Alex Demos, who only votes in the event of a tie, said the project will help emergency crews respond to fires or medical
emergencies faster. “I’d like that ambulances be able to make an immediate response,” he said. The reconstruction of the underpass is estimated to cost $2.4 million. The village has received a federal grant through the Surface Transportation Program of the Federal Highway Administration, which will cover 75 percent of the project. Village officials said they will continue to look for more grants to offset the cost of construction.

comply with the rules of the audit as given by the Auditor General,” the letter stated. Trustee Kathy Hamilton called on the board to schedule an emergency meeting this week to address the audit payment. “With more than $170 million in the bank, there is no question that College of DuPage can afford to pay for the state’s investigation of Dr. Breuder’s performance as our chief executive officer,” Hamilton wrote in an email to Breuder and Birt. College spokesman Joe Moore said Wednesday the board will not host a special meeting to address the audit. According to Ives, the college must agree to the terms of the audit by today. Moore said the college has not decided whether it will pay for the audit. “No one I meet has confidence in the COD Board or its senior administration. A performance audit, performed by the State Auditor General, an independent agency, is one of the best ways to reveal whether or not procedures were followed in accordance with the law and board rules,” Ives said in a news release sent Tuesday.

Bridge pays special attention to survivors of domestic abuse Recently, we’ve seen incidents of domestic violence highlighted in the media more than ever. While no one enjoys seeing this kind of news, the result of the additional media attention has been more awareness of just how widespread domestic violence is. In fact, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in the United States: COMMUNITY • More than 31 percent VOICE of women have been physiLisa cally abused by an intimate partner at some point in their Doyle lives. • Physical abuse against women results in 1.8 million injuries per year. • Half of women have suffered from emotional/psychological abuse. At Bridge Communities, we know all too well about domestic abuse – each year, about half the clients entering our Transitional Housing Program are abuse survivors. The abuse often played a major role in their becoming homeless; some Bridge families escaped their partner’s violence by fleeing with their children to a shelter while others were thrown out of their homes in a fit of rage. We know Bridge families have been through incredible hardships, and we never minimize their lasting toll either. That’s why one of our partners is Stepping Stones, a Rosellebased organization committed to empowering domestic abuse survivors and creating a path to safety. Every year, mentors and volunteers from Stepping Stones support several Bridge families as they rebuild their lives. In addition to the programming we offer to clients as they shape their futures, such as job assistance, mentoring and tutoring, we also offer free weekly counseling to any client that wants help reconciling with their pasts. On April 24, Bridge’s fifth annual spring luncheon, “Celebrating Women, Transforming Lives,” will pay special attention to survivors of domestic abuse. You won’t want to miss their inspirational stories of resilience in moving forward in their lives. Please join us at Danada House in Wheaton as we celebrate their strength and courage. Tickets for the Celebrating Women, Transforming Lives spring luncheon are available on www.bridgecommunities.org.

Drumbeat of bad news vindicates COD faculty When a union can’t see eye to eye with the leadership of the organization that employs its members, there could be any number of factors at play. Sometimes unions have unrealistic expectations. Sometimes there’s just a clash of personalities. Sometimes a leader making needed changes ruffles some feathers along the way. The College of DuPage Faculty Association’s beef with school President Robert Breuder and the Board of Trustees may include some of those elements. But on balance, the faculty members have largely been vindicated. The faculty registered a vote of no confidence in Breuder in September; in the months since then, pretty much everyone else has joined them in that opinion. The recitation of the failures in leadership at the College of DuPage has become routine yet still shocking. A leaked email suggesting playing games with state money. Fraud at WDCB, the college radio station. Battles over whether imprest payments require auditing. Breuder’s free meals at the money-losing Waterleaf restaurant on campus. And to top it all off, the generous $762,000 in severance that Breuder will get when he vacates his post in disgrace in 2016. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270
Compared to all that, the faculty’s concerns lodged in September can sound almost petty at first: “We don’t feel inspired by [Breuder] as a leader,” said Glenn Hansen, president of the faculty association. There are a lot of people in a lot of jobs feeling less than inspired by their bosses. It’s a common refrain. But in this case, we know now there was actual bad management behind the complaint. Given what we’ve learned, who could blame Hansen and the faculty members for not feeling inspired? Breuder’s response to the faculty’s vote only cements that they knew what they were talking about. “Factual accuracy has never been important to the Senate leadership,” he wrote in a response made public recently. “It does not support their irresponsible and unfounded accusations.” Strong words, given Breuder’s email that exposed him as someone who finds no issue with bending the truth when it suits him. Next month, voters will get to pick three members for the College of DuPage Board of Trustees. There are a lot of candidates running. Residents would be wise to keep in mind the recent leadership dysfunction when making their selections.

This is for people who teach driver’s education: Please emphasis that your students use the directional signal. Nobody does that anymore. And once the students learn, they should go home and tell their parents to use the signals. I’m just really tired of second guessing all the drivers and which way they are planning on going.

Say no to an electronic billboard on Palmer Drive underpass Elmhurst city officials are in the final stages of considering the installation of an electronic billboard on the Palmer Drive underpass. Such a sign is visually unpleasant and conflicts with the hometown feel Elmhurst strives to maintain. Further, an electronic billboard on the underpass presents a safety hazard, as it distracts drivers who are looking overhead instead of at the road in front of them. I think the village of Downers Grove has their priorities screwed up. Instead of messing with the Clyde Estates subdivision, how about using that money to fix your streets. They are the worst ones in the area – especially Fairview and Maple avenues. It’s like driving on a washboard.

LETTERS To the editor: I suggest all residents to attend the next board meeting regarding the Opus development at the old Giesche shoe store. They have proposed a five-story building right on the sidewalk. This project seems too fast-tracked through approval and not many residents even know about it. It could turn into a monster eyesore in the heart of our town. Please contact the village and find out all about it before it is approved.
To the editor: Attention residents of Illinois’ 6th Congressional District: Wake up! On March 3, your congressmen, Peter Roskam, voted nay on HR 240: Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2015. This bill cleanly funds the Department of Homeland Security until Sept. 30. It was passed by the senate, the house and then signed by the president. Why does Roskam not believe in supporting America’s security? Does he not care if another 9/11 happens?

For the sake of our children, we need to make changes to the District 41 School Board. I, for one, am so disheartened by the lack of respect and sometimes adversary nature the current board has for parents. I am disheartened by the cavalier attitude taken by the current board toward the values of this community. I don’t wish to have a board that rubber-stamps everything I want. I want a board that fosters a true partnership between the school and the parents. We need to elect new board members that will provide us with a voice, transparency, common sense, data driven, child-focused direction and taxpayer accountability.

Recent indings linked to weight loss are from the Wheat Belly Book and how excess fructose causes weight gain. Easy quit all wheat products. In America the modiied hybridized dwarf high yield Bob Listecki, Pharmacist wheat digests to glucose at rocket speed and challenges our insulin to quickly convert the glucose to FAT. Q: A:
Dentistry I’ve been hearing a lot about xylitol lately. What it is and can it benefit my teeth?
Xylitol is a natural sweetener derived from the fibrous parts of plants. It does not break down like sugar and can help keep a neutral pH level in the mouth. Xylitol also prevents Charise M. Petrelli DDS bacteria from sticking to the teeth. This is how it protects the teeth from tooth decay. With Xylitol, the acid attack that would otherwise last for over half an hour is stopped. Tooth decay happens when bacteria in your mouth consume the sugars we eat. When you eat food containing ordinary sugar (sucrose), it gives bacteria on your teeth energy, allowing them to multiply and start making acids that can eat away the enamel on the teeth. This “acid attack” causes tooth decay and cavities to begin to form. Because the bacteria in the mouth that are causing cavities are unable to digest xylitol, their growth is greatly reduced. The number of acid-producing bacteria may fall as much as 90%. No acid is formed because the pH of saliva and plaque does not fall. After taking xylitol, the bacteria do not stick well on the surface of the teeth and as a result, the amount of plaque decreases. Research has shown that the use of xylitol also helps repair damage to the enamel. Saliva in itself protects the mouth and teeth. Stimulated saliva in particular contains all the components needed to repair early cavities. If sugar is only taken a couple of times a day, the saliva can do the job alone. But most people take sugar so often that the mouth’s own defensive tools are not enough. Saliva that has xylitol is more alkaline than saliva stimulated by other sugar products. After taking xylitol products, the concentration of basic amino acids and ammonia in saliva and plaque may rise, and plaque pH rises as well. When pH is above 7, calcium and phosphate salts in saliva start to move into those parts of enamel that are weak. Therefore, soft, calcium-deficient enamel sites begin to harden again. 577 Pennsylvania Avenue Suite 100, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 I recommend 3 easy steps to incorporate xylitol into your daily regimen: 1. Use Xylitol toothpaste, mouthwash, and nasal spray upon waking up (630) 942-0727 2. After breakfast, lunch & dinner use Xylitol gum, mints or candy www.glenellyndentistry.com 3. Use Xylitol toothpaste, mouthwash, and nasal spray before going to bed www.facebook.com/glenellyndentistrypc adno=S0253707

Patrons often run into Hall of Famer Frank Thomas at his Big Hurt Brewhouse in Berwyn.
Barbecued pulled pork provides a decadent touch to an order of BHB mac and cheese. Bacon and avocado add big flavor to the salmon BLT sandwich, accom- crispiness. Meanwhile, the pork was very tender. We both panied by sweet potato fries. To start, my friend ordered the house BHB Honey Girl beer, which is an American Hefeweizen that was tasty and, importantly for a wheat beer, not too sweet. There are several BHB beers, and a fairly wide selection of other craft and domestic brews available
on tap. For the appetizer, we chose the BHB smothered fries, which feature crispy fries, pulled pork, giardiniera and Monterey Jack cheese. I’m typically quite picky with fries, but these had a coating that captured the desired
agreed the giardiniera could have used more heat, but my friend thought the appetizer was a standout. Next up, I went with the BHB BBQ pulled pork mac and cheese. Not only is the name a mouthful, but it’s a big portion. Normally, I’m a purist when it comes to mac
and cheese, but the bacon and pulled pork were surprisingly good additions. First off, the mac and cheese had the proper creaminess, gooeyness and mix of colors to show that there are multiple cheeses at work. Throw in the crispy, crunchy bacon and that would have made for a great meal on its own. The pork was good, again, but the sweet barbecue sauce didn’t quite sync with the savory cheese for my personal taste. So, I ended up basically eating bacon mac and cheese with a side of pulled pork, and enjoyed both that way. My friend ordered a salmon BLT sandwich with sweet potato fries and also had positive things to report. The bacon and avocado flavorfully complemented the mild fish to make for another winner. The menu has a wide variety from barbecue to pasta dishes, seafood, salads, sandwiches and pizza flatbreads, more than deserving of another run around the pub’s culinary bases.

BERWYN – Heading to a restaurant named after one of my childhood heroes was an exciting prospect, and the food at Big Hurt Brewhouse did not disappoint. Athletes breaking into the restaurant business is nothing new. In many cases, their involvement varies, determining how large a role they play in the success of the enterprise. A big name on the front of the building is nice, but that alone won’t keep a restaurant afloat. I am pleased to report Frank Thomas was in the building – and left this White Sox fan a bit stunned at the sight of the Hall of Famer. He runs an attractive restaurant/ sports bar that provided my companion and me with good food and drink. A scattering of Frank Thomas memorabilia brings back some cherished memories, capped by an impressive replica of the statue of the slugger displayed at the ballpark. The pub is on the southwest corner of Cermak Road and Oak Park Avenue in Berwyn, which means tons of eyeballs get to see the bright white lights that say Big Hurt Brewhouse on a daily basis. Upon entering, my immediate reaction was: “Ooo, this is kind of fancy.” My casual tastes can just as easily be satisfied in a dive bar or a diner, but it does feel good to walk into a place that puts some effort into the ambience. The pub is housed in a historic bank building, and still sports a vault, as well as the elaborately embellished dome that draws the eye upward like a baseball headed to the stratosphere. It’s definitely fancy enough for a date night but remains a casual sports bar perfect to watch a game with some friends over drinks. There are enough TVs that you will never have a bad view if you want to catch a game. And the staff the night I visited was on the ball enough to pipe in the audio right at the Blackhawks game’s first faceoff.

Goal Setting to reach your full potential Everyone has a starting point. Whether you are a novice or experienced athlete, we all are looking to improve in one way or another. That improvement might be to lose weight, to place in your age group in a local or national race, or simply to improve your fitness. Setting goals will give you motivation and boosts self-confidence. Having those goals, adjusting, and learning how to set them can help you achieve them. Ryan Giuliano started from not knowing how to swim in college to becoming the top ranked amateur Ironman athlete in the world in 2015. It has required him to set many short term and long term goals and keeping motivated and disciplined to attain them. He will discuss how to plan goals out and follow through to meet them.

ALL-AREA MVP
Bauman stands tall for Glenbard South By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com During her first game in a Glenbard South uniform as a freshman, Sydney Bauman got a rude introduction to the varsity level after a Batavia opponent scored 22 points on her. Now a senior, Bauman was the one creating the headaches for the opposition this past season. “I told myself that was never going to happen again,” Bauman said of her first high school contest. “I was most certainly not the best player back then; I was more defense than offense and I really struggled to make post moves and finish at the rim. “Coach [Morgan] Kasperek helped me tremendously this year, she helped me with post moves and rebounding and reading the court. I used to just be really good at defense and now I can play on both sides of the court. Plus, there were games [this season] where I didn’t come out and freshman year I could never play a whole game.” Head coach Julie Fonda had a frontrow seat to watch the progression of her 6-foot-4 center and four-year starter. “Her game has evolved over the four years the way you would want a kid’s game to evolve,” Fonda said. “As a freshman, she was a presence defensively and she made you alter shots because she was 6-foot-4. She continued to improve defensively but offensively, she became a complete player. “I sometimes say that she passes too much, but that will only help her at the next level. Just the way she now sees the floor and her basketball IQ, she has a really bright future at the next level.” Bauman finished this season with averages of 12.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for an extremely balanced Raiders team. She also blocked 84 shots and notched 49 steals. But the number that was most important to the senior was 25, the program record number of wins Glenbard South recorded this season. “I’ve been playing with [teammates] Ivana Markovic and Jenna Brambora for a while,” she said. “We were on the same feeder team since fifth grade. Those first three years were a lot of hard work and it was like senior year was just fun. Everyone meshed together, everyone bought into the system and we went to work. Senior year was what we were waiting for.” Bauman is quick to credit both Fonda and her teammates for her accomplishments. “I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am at without my teammates and
coach,” the senior said. “Playing for a coach who has won two state championships in another sport, she embodies the championship mindset. We all wanted to win so badly and we gave her and each other everything we had. We came together as a team because we worked so hard together.” One of Bauman’s crowning achievements is a scholarship to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. That school first contacted her during September of her junior year and contin-

ued to stay in touch throughout the recruiting process. “I am so excited,” Bauman said. “It is an incredible opportunity with a bunch of incredible people. I feel like I will grow so much as a player and a person. But I know it won’t be easy.” Then again, if the last four years are any indication, Bauman has nothing to worry about. “I never would have thought I’d be an MVP ever,” she said. “Hard work does pay off.”

Benet girls hoops claim first state title in program history
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA NORMAL – The finale was fitting for Benet’s girls basketball team. The Redwings had steamrolled over most of their opponents this season, and did the same in a 61-39 win against Fremd in the Class 4A state championship game Saturday night at Redbird Arena. Only three of Benet’s 34 wins this season were by single digits, including a 61-54 win against Fremd on Jan. 19. Six of the team’s seven playoff wins were also by double digits. The Redwings finished the season with a 34-3 record and the program’s first state title in Joe Kilbride’s first season as head coach. The championship game was tight for three quarters before Benet blitzed the Vikings in the final frame. Fremd scored the first two points of the fourth quarter to trim Benet’s lead to 38-35. Then the Redwings went on a 23-4 run to close out the game, starting with Morgan Thomalla’s layup on an Emily Eshoo assist and concluding with Eshoo’s layup on Thomalla’s feed with 32 seconds left in the game. Katie Jaseckas, Kathleen Doyle and Emily Schramek also scored during the surge that sealed the win. Doyle’s 18 points led a balanced attack. Schramek scored 15, Jaseckas had 12 and Eshoo added eight for the Redwings.

Benet’s Kathleen Doyle (11) holds back the bench Saturday as the final seconds tick off the clock before celebrating their IHSA Class 4A championship game victory. The Redwings defeated the Fremd Vikings 61-39 to win their first title in program history. Benet also taught a clinic on sharing the basketball as it had 13 assists on 21 made field goals. Doyle led the way with five, Eshoo had three, Thomalla and Elise Stout tallied two each and Schramek had one assist. In a 77-71 state semifinal win against Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday, Benet outscored H-F 52-28 in the second and third quarters, then held off a late Vikings’ rally for the win. H-F got as close as 72-69 late in the game before Jaseckas, Stout and Eshoo helped close out the win at the free-throw line. Eshoo scored 29 in the semifinal with Doyle (17) and Stout (11) also reaching double figures.
BOYS BASKETBALL The Benet boys basketball team was
upset Friday in the regional final game against York. Exacting some revenge for a 39-31 loss Dec. 13, York defeated the Redwings by the same score Friday at the Glenbard West regional to advance to the sectional semis. Benet (22-8), the No. 2 seed in the Aurora East sectional, shot 10 of 35 from the field, including 4 of 19 from 3-point range. Colin Bonnett led with 14 points and Dan Sobolewski chipped in nine points for Benet, last year’s Class 4A state runners-up who finished the year with a sixth straight 20-win season. The Redwings advanced to regional finals with a 45-39 victory against Glenbard West in the regional semis.

The squad defeated Plainfield 5-1 in the Round of 16 on Sunday. Nick Pietro (Glenbard North) leads the team with 63 goals and 47 assists in 53 games, while Nikko Parisi (Glenbard East) has tallied 18 goals and 43 assists. Jacob Weisz (Glenbard North) is 23-5 in goal and has made 781 saves.
AURORA – Defeating a team three times in a single season is always a tough task. Glenbard South found that out the hard way, falling to Aurora Central Catholic 69-62 in the IMSA Class 3A regional final this past Friday. The Raiders had knocked off the Chargers 73-53 and 46-44 during the regular season. In the regional final, they led 1613 after the opening eight minutes, thanks in large part to 13 points from Tyler Scott. But ACC outscored Glenbard South 19-15 in the second quarter and 18-12 to build a seven-point advantage. The Raiders would claw their way back and knot up the score at 59 apiece with under two minutes remaining before the Chargers’ Brett Czerak poured in five straight points. Tim Marks totaled 18 points to top the squad and Scott finished with 17. Povilas Riauba and Bill Bair contributed nine and eight points, respectively. Glenbard South advanced to the regional final with a 61-56 win against St. Francis on March 4. Bair led all scorers with 23 points and made two free throws in the closing seconds to clinch the victory. “He’s [Billy] been our leading guy all year long,” Raiders coach Wade Hardtke said. “We’ve been talking about trying to get him to a point where he can get doubled down and still produce. The gameplan was to keep him inside as much as possible and we were able to get him some work and some touches and he produced.” Marks also checked into double figures with 14. Scott had eight and Jonny Gutierrez totaled six.
Game breakdown Glenbard South 62, Aurora Central Catholic 69 GLENBARD SOUTH LEADERS n Tim Marks: 18 points n Tyler Scott: 17 points
