By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Ever heard of an Indian pangolin or a whalehead? If your answer was no, you’re probably not the only one. When it comes to traditional children’s books, only the most simplistic and easily recognizable animals usually are featured – from cats in hats to Goldilocks’ three bears, Hilary Austin to big red dogs. This represents just a small portion of the estimated 1.5 million species found around the world. However, one woman hopes to change all that by adding exotic animals to the children’s book genre. Glen Ellyn resident Hilary Austin, inspired by her own love of wildlife and “curious looking creatures,” has started a Kickstarter campaign to help fund her illustrated text of various unique animals in wildlife. animals, each in an article of clothing that matches the first letter of its name. Austin explained her love of these animals came early on in her childhood. “Whenever we would go to the zoo when I was child, I would always look for unusual animals,” Austin said. “I would be excited by them.” Austin’s artistic side runs deep within her family. Both her parents are graphic designers and her brothers are animators and visual effects artists. Her grandmother, a librarian, also helped immerse her in children’s books at an early age, providing her with around 1,500 children’s books. Austin’s mother has served as her personal cheerleader during this time, and has urged her to continue working on this project. “I’m extremely proud of her,” said Austin’s mother, Mary Austin. “She started out with a simple idea and because it was something she loved so much, she threw herself into it.” Hillary Austin turned to Kickstarter after realizing that many creative personal projects from independent artists have seen success through the crowdfunding website. Austin has personally backed 18 projects herself. Pledgers who make contributions

GLEN ELLYN – Attracting audiences for decades has recently been rewarded with a major boost in sponsorships for the Glenbard Parent Series. Now the Glenbard School District 87 yearlong program is bigger and better than ever, according to Gilda Ross, Glenbard student and community projects coordinator. “Quality can beget quality,” Ross said. “People that come in are the best in the business. It is programming on every aspect of the student’s life.” The series brings in experts to teach parents, students and educators about the issues facing today’s youth and help them develop tools to remain proactive and strengthen the community. This school year’s four new annual sponsors – DuPage Medical Group, College of DuPage, Emmy Gaffey Foundation and Trust Company of Illinois – bring the program total number of annual sponsors to six, along with Cebrin Goodman Center and Cooperative Association for Special Education. The newfound support has allowed for 50 programs this school year, about 20 more than previous years, Ross said. Ross said it has helped in ac-

Students compete in state geography bee at COD By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – More than 100 students from across the state competed Friday in the Illinois National Geographic State Bee at College of DuPage, but only one could rise above the pack. Alexandru Grindeanu, an eighth-grader from Gower Middle School in Burr Ridge, fought his way through the tense competition to become the champion and will represent the state in the national competition this May in Washington, D.C. Illinois State Bee Coordinator Michael Middleton organized the state bee, in its 27th year. Middleton emphasized the bee is much more than just naming U.S. states and capitals. “We could ask you art, sports, literature, food, because geography touches every aspect of life,” said Middleton. Moderator Chris Sutton asked a variety of questions with categories ranging from locations of popular festivals around the world, where some of the top roller coasters are located and other geographic trivia. After several elimination rounds, Alexandru won in the three-question finale by answering correctly to the question: “A recent fossil discovery

revealed that spinosaurus, the largest known carnivorous dinosaur, is also the first known swimming dinosaur. This fossil was unearthed in the Kem Kem beds near the city of Errachidia in which country that borders Algeria?” The correct answer is Morocco. “We are very proud of him,” said Grindeanu’s father, Iulian Grindeanu. “He is a very good kid, [with] top grades. We knew he could do it.” The younger Grindeanu was overcome with emotion when discussing his win. “It’s the best moment of my life,” he said. “I just can’t describe it. I’m just happy.” Becoming the state champion was no easy feat for Alexandru, who spent most of his time diving into geography and absorbing information that could help him. “I played geography games, quiz games, review games, read maps, atlases, magazines,” Alexandru said. “Anything can help you win, like watching movies, watching TV, all of that has added to my knowledge.” Other notable contestants included Akshay and Aditya Badlani from Brook Forest Elementary School. They were the first pair of brothers to compete in the same year at the state level and made it to the final round of 10 contestants.

Akshay, a fourth-grader from Oak Brook, was a first time geography bee contestant and was enthusiastic about the bee and competing alongside his brother, who is a sixth-grader. “I got into it by my brother,” Akshay said. “He knew all U.S. capitals when he was like 2 or 3, and when I was 8, he just got me into it. more about the world and its people.” The national winner will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and a trip to the Galápagos Islands. The finals will be broadcast on the National Geographic Channel on May 15.

Reports: DuPage state’s attorney’s office looking into college’s spending

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Prosecutors at the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office recently issued a pair of subpoenas for the financial records of the embattled College of DuPage and its fundraising arm, according to media reports, which cited anonymous sources. The documents were issued in the past several weeks as the college has been bombarded with allegations of lavish spending and reimbursements, an overly generous buyout for President Robert Breuder and concerns about contracts given out to members of the College of DuPage Foundation board. The subpoena against the foundation has since been withdrawn,

according to media reports, but the second against the college remains. According to an anonymous source speaking to the Daily Herald, the state’s attorney’s office does not believe there to be any criminal wrongdoing at the school. Earlier this month when addressing the claims against the foundation, Executive Director Catherine Brod said the accusations were unwarranted, untrue and misguided. “The volunteers who serve on the board of the College of DuPage Foundation are respected leaders in our community who have agreed to act as goodwill ambassadors for our school while performing vital fundraising for our students’ scholarships and programs,”

she wrote in a statement March 19. Foundation board members who have contracts with the college had all been doing work for the college before their time on the board, she said. On March 11, college board Chairwoman Erin Birt sent a memo to the board of trustees saying the board would review the relationships between the foundation board members and the college. Birt also said the board would review all travel and dining expenditure policies, as well as the college’s and board’s processes for procuring services. Illinois lawmakers also have pushed the school to pay for a staterun financial audit, although the school has not yet agreed.

Foundation board member gets no-bid contracts College gives graphic design firm $630,000 for signs By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com A member of the College of DuPage Foundation Board of Directors has received more than $630,000 in no-bid contracts as an architect – despite not being one. Carla Burkhart, on the board since 2012, and her graphic design firm, Herricane Graphics, were given contracts in 2012 and 2014 for designing signage worth a total of more than $186,000, according to board documents obtained by the Edgar County Watchdogs group.

Changed orders on the two contracts have since hiked the total payments, according to the documents. The 2012 contract was not awarded through a public bidding process, according to board documents. Requests for bid are usually required for public community colleges for work costing more than $25,000, according to state statute. Details on the 2014 contract were not immediately made available. There are a few exceptions to that state requirement, including one that allows no-bid contracts for architecture work from firms the col-

In the board contract for the work, Herricane is repeatedly referred to as an architect. The college has stood by the contracts, saying in a statement they were boilerplate for many construction documents used by the college and had been modified for the work.

OUR VIEW

Monarch butterflies strike out each spring from their wintering location in Mexico, beginning a 3,000 mile-long, four-generation journey that reaches as far as Canada. Their migration is one of the longest-distance insect migrations known on Earth. As monarchs travel, they lay their eggs on milkweed – and only milkweeds – as it is the sole food their caterpilCOMMUNITY lars eat. VOICE Monarchs have made the Courtney news quite frequently in recent months. Sadly, the story O’Kray isn’t a happy one. The monarch population is experiencing a rapid decline. Their population has plummeted by more than 90 percent in the past 20 years, largely because of the loss and degradation of a key component of their habitat. We are referring to the loss of one very important plant: milkweed. To monarchs, milkweed means survival. Because of the monarch’s migratory life cycle, efforts need to be made to conserve and restore milkweed across their entire range. This summer, the Glen Ellyn Park District is partnering with the village of Glen Ellyn, Glen Ellyn Environmental Commission, Glen Ellyn Public Library, Willowbrook Wildlife Center and Ben Franklin School to develop and promote a concentrated effort in Glen Ellyn to save the monarch butterfly from extinction by planting milkweed way stations throughout the community. The goal is to plant milkweed gardens at as many as 100 public and private locations. From 9 to 11 a.m. June 20, the Park District and the village of Glen Ellyn will be planting milkweeds and other butterfly-loving flowers in demonstrative gardens. We invite you to join in the effort to save the monarch butterfly by attending one of these planting days. Those who attend will be given as many as three milkweed plants to plant in their home gardens. Participants can register for a planting day and learn about the monarch butterfly at gepark.org/monarch.html. To quote a famous line from Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax,” “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing’s going to get better. It’s not.”

College of DuPage serves about 28,000 students a semester, making it the second-largest undergraduate institution in Illinois. It has more than 90 certificate and degree programs. It’s a jewel of the western suburbs, extending beyond its namesake county to serve students from Lemont to Naperville, from La Grange to Elmhurst to West Chicago, all from its campus in Glen Ellyn. That litany of good things makes the ongoing torrent of bad news from and about COD leadership all the more outrageous for those of us who live and pay taxes in the school’s district. The recent hiring of a $250-an-hour public relations firm, for instance, fits the textbook definition of irony perfectly. Spending taxpayer money to convince those same taxpayers that you didn’t waste their money is so ludicrous on its face that one wonders if the board members piled out of a clown car when they arrived at the meeting where this decision took place. “I think it’s clear that there is need for a PR firm to help the public understand what the true facts are,” board Chairwoman Erin Birt said. It seems that “true facts” about the college are emerging on an almost daily basis, and the public doesn’t seem to be having any trouble understanding them: • Carla Burkhart, a member of the College of DuPage Foundation Board of Directors, has received more than $630,000 in no-bid contracts. Her graphic design firm, Herricane Graphics, was given contracts in 2012 and 2014 for designing signage worth a total

PR firm hire can’t obscure bad decisions at College of DuPage of more than $186,000. Change orders on the contracts have hiked the total payments, according to board documents. • The Chicago Tribune, citing law enforcement and other sources, reported Monday that the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office has issued grand jury subpoenas for records relating to expenses for school administrators at Waterleaf, the restaurant on campus. The Tribune has reported COD President Robert Breuder and other administrators expensed more than $190,000 on food and drinks in the past three years at Waterleaf. • Dan Bailey, a candidate in the upcoming election for COD Board of Trustees, claimed more than $2 million was handed out to College of DuPage Foundation board members without having to submit a competitive bid. Bailey’s allegations prompted Birt to launch a “review” of the practice. This is all on top of alleged fraud at the college’s radio station, Breuder’s sweetheart deal to step down as president with an extra $762,000 in his pocket after an embarrassing email leaked, and the board’s continued dithering on whether to allow an audit of its finances. Students at the school pay $140 per credit hour. That, and taxpayers across the suburbs, in multiple counties, are paying for all of this. If you haven’t voted already, you’re going to want to weigh in. You can see what 11 of the 12 candidates have to say, both incumbents and challengers, at http://shawurl. com/1tfx. Make sure you’re informed so you can help get this great school back on course.

“Matt Gambs is the expert we need on the Board of Trustees for the College of DuPage and that’s why I’m voting for him this April 7th. It’s time to elect a private-sector leader, with board room experience, to bring back control of the management process and bring resolution to the existing issues that exist at COD. Machine-style politics in DuPage

As a D-41 resident, I have concerns about the board petitioning and endorsing two PTA leaders (and incumbent). These positions typically support and implement board decisions. Recent press and the forum discussion confirmed these candidates are likely to rubber stamp most board agendas. This creates a risk of “group think,” often resulting in poor decision making. We need board members who will think critically, challenge decisions, and work in the best interest of the taxpayers they represent. Many board decisions have been made with minimal discussion and little to no public input. The board eliminated public comments at the end of meetings, board highlights and doesn’t communicate upcoming decisions that impact the public. This is disconcerting since almost half the communities’ taxes fund board initiatives. It’s time for a change.

And if they were able to cite an animal from my book and talk about it passionately, I cannot describe how happy that would make me.” As of Wednesday, the project has raised $4,272 of the $20,000 pledge goal with 76 backers. They made it clear to the ayatollah and President Obama that although U.S. presidents can enter into treaties with foreign governments they are not binding under our Constitution until two thirds of the Senate ratifies them. Sports medicine physician Vijay Thangamani will help answer questions regarding the dangers of using steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. “This program supports both parents and children,” said Peri Todd, charitable fund director for DuPage Medical Group. “We feel like the em-

director of the College of DuPage Foundation. “Just as with all Foundation board members who are also vendors to the College of DuPage, Carla Burkhart performed professional services for the college long before volunteering to serve on the foundation board,” Brod said. Several pieces of legislation have been introduced at the state level to look into the college’s finances, including one by state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, earlier this year. The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office also has looked into the financial records of the college, according to media reports. The college has been in the spotlight for several weeks, brought on

by a controversial $762,000 buyout for President Robert Breuder in January and reports that college officials had expensed thousands of dollars in questionable items at the on-campus Waterleaf Restaurant, including meals for trustees and more than $1,000 in alcohol for a trustee Christmas party. College board chairwoman Erin Birt said in a March 11 memo that the board and staff would be looking into all expenditure and procurement policies. “It is disheartening that we find ourselves in this situation, and while the academic integrity of the college remains strong, we must take immediate and long-term action that is in the best interest of the school, our students and the community,” she wrote.

Real Estate News Ronald McDonald House in Central DuPage County teams up with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton Office Wheaton, IL – Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton Office visited the Central DuPage County Ronald McDonald House to participate in their Meals from the Heart program. This is the second time Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton office, in conjunction with the KoenigRubloff Cares Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports local initiatives, has prepared meals for residents and families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, visiting the house in both February and March of 2015.

The Meals from the Heart program was developed for families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House while their children are being treated at Central DuPage Hospital. Many of the residents live miles away from the hospital, and the Ronald McDonald House allows them to stay close to the hospital. Volunteers are able to come in on a particular date to prepare meals for the residents staying in the home. “I just want to say that the Meals from the Heart program is a fantastic program,” Vice President and Managing Broker, Ken Spengel of Berkshire Hathaway

KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton office said. “When the idea was presented at an office meeting to see if anyone wanted to go to the house and prepare meals for the residents, the response was unanimous. We were able to have a great time cooking and laughing, then we sat down and shared a meal with the residents of the house. There aren’t enough words to describe what this program does for these people who are going through a difficult time. We will be doing it again in April. Then in June we will be grilling during the company wide week of kindness.”

Outlook: With a wealth of experience back from last season’s 20-win team, big things could be in store for Glenbard South this spring. The Raiders return a host of starters, including seniors Alex McGimpsey, Joey Atkinson, Andrew Wrona, Brian Ashe and Dylan Brambora. Fellow senior Dominic Fazzari will once again be a vital part of the pitching staff. Juniors Kyle Carli, Tim Marks and Michael Ashe were also contributors a year ago and will be counted on heavily this season. Fazzari and Atkinson were all-conference selections in 2014 with Wrona an honorable mention pick. “If our pitchers stay healthy, we should have a good season,” Glenbard South coach Mike Riley said. Glenbard South should be in competition for a top finish in the new-look Metro Suburban Conference after finishing

The Raiders won two of their first three games to begin the season, notching an 11-6 victory against Boyd on March 29 and a 9-5 decision against Olentangy Liberty a day later as part of their trip to Myrtle Beach. Against Boyd, Michael Ashe had two doubles and four RBIs, Wrona was 4 for 5 with three runs scored and Brambora was the winning pitcher. Ashe was 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs against Olentangy and Fazzari notched the victory on the mound.

as Glenbard West, which returns only one full-time starter and three part-time starters from a year ago. As a result, there are plenty of opportunities to be had for a roster that includes seven seniors and nine juniors. “We are young,” Glenbard West coach Andy Schultz said. “Our whole pitching staff pretty much will be juniors. They did well as sophomores and had a good summer for us but there is a lot of inexperience. There are a lot of opportunities for guys this year. We have a lot of unknowns right now.”

Sports to your phone

One known commodity is four-year varsity team member and starting catcher Will Simoneit, who will continue his baseball career at Cornell. “Will obviously is our main guy and a guy that we will lean on,” Schultz said. Fellow senior Alex Martenson started for most of last spring while Jack Sojka and Billy Becker also received starts. Juniors Matt Shoub and Arno Curtis will fill in the left side of the infield. On the mound, Glenbard West returns nobody that threw an inning in 2014. Juniors Justin O’Neal and Zach Lutz are expected to be the top two hurlers. “I think offensively, that is our biggest strength right now,” the coach said. “We have a good balance of guys who can put the ball in play and guys with pop in the middle of the order and guys who can run. “We are going to have to catch the ball. We are going to have to get 16 or 17 outs a game because we aren’t going to strikeout a lot of guys. We have to throw strikes and then catch the ball when it is hit to us.” The Hilltoppers could actually be in the same boat as many teams in the challenging West Suburban Silver Conference. “I felt like last year, most of the teams were kind of like us, senior heavy,” Schultz said. “I think it is going to be a very young conference this year though in this conference, everybody is always good.” The squad started off the season with an 11-10 win against Wheaton Academy on March 21 as Simoneit had a home run and five RBIs. Glenbard West also defeated Christian Academy of Louisville 8-5 on March 30 behind a 4-for-5, 3-RBI performance from Sojka. Martenson also had three RBIs and O’Neal allowed three hits in five innings of work.

GLEN ELLYN – In a short amount of time, the Glenbard West boys volleyball program has become one of the best in the state and this spring, the Hilltoppers are ranked among the top one or two teams after bringing home a third-place trophy in 2014. Coming off a 35-win season, which included a perfect run through the West Suburban Silver conference, the 2015 squad could be even better. “This is a very special team,” coach Christine Giunta said. “They have amazing work ethics, they are overachievers and when you tell them practice is over or it’s time to stop, they ask if they can have more. “Our depth is tremendous, everyone can play, and we don’t find ourselves stuck in positions that we can’t get out of. They are working really hard on their chemistry and reading each other. One of the smartest and most intelligent teams I have ever worked with, they are truly students of the game.” Glenbard West is loaded with talent, beginning with junior setter Paulie Bischoff, who registered 770 assists and 170 digs last season. Fellow junior Kyler Kotsakis is the team’s go-to hitter after eclipsing 300 kills as a sophomore. Ball State recruit Parker Swartz returns in the middle after missing much of last season due to injury, while senior Jackson Nagle is a three-year varsity starter.
