GW preparing for science addition, Crescent Boulevard improvements

$1.50 $40/$79 out of area

mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard West High School officials discussed major construction plans for this summer at a public forum April 15. The plans include construction of an eight-classroom science addition, an air conditioning and lighting upgrade to Biester Gym, and structural improvements to Crescent Boulevard. The science addition and Biester Gym updates are part of a 10-year master facility plan for all Glenbard Township High School District 87 schools, which includes $100 million in work, a majority of which will include renovations of classrooms, common areas and outdoor spaces along with infrastructure improvements. The Village of Glen Ellyn will be in charge of the structural improvements to Crescent Boulevard. The estimated total cost of the projects at Glenbard West this summer will fall at $12.5 million to $13.4 million for the science addition – which will be funded through referendum bonds and the district’s operating budget – and $3 million for the air conditioning and lighting. The changes to Crescent Boulevard are estimated to cost $3.5 million and will be paid for by a combination of village, district and federal funds. The science building will include chemistry labs, physics classrooms, a common space for staff, collaborative nodes and a green outdoor rooftop area. “I’m very excited particularly because I was a teacher in this building for 33 years,” former Glenbard West

This is a phenomenal addition.” Weinstock also said the architectural style closely matches that of the school. “I like the way they matched the architectural style, I like the corridors. We need these improvements to our science labs,” Weinstock said. “To me it’s a win-win and we’re not raising any taxes to do it, which is even better.” The project has been a long time coming for many teachers and faculty in the science department who are looking for more space and a better facility, department Chair Sean F. Bryne said.

“It’s going to be a great showcase for our already excellent school,” he said. “[In] the science department, the facilities were holding us back a little bit, and now were going to literally blow the roof off of that.” The upgrades in Biester include improvements related to heating, air conditioning and air handlers, as well as replacing the current lights with LED lights to increase the brightness of the gym and save the school money. Plans to revamp Crescent Boulevard include a realignment of the intersection at Park Boulevard to improve functionality; a roundabout to tie Crescent Boulevard, Park Row and Crescent Court; and a raised mid-block to provide additional crossing and slow traffic. Attendees voiced minor concern during snow removal after the construction as well as travel and safety concerns with all projects happening simultaneously, but district administrators assured them the projects are being handled with care and cooperation from all parties involved, including the village, which will manage the Crescent Boulevard project. Administrators anticipate the improvements for Biester Gym and Crescent Boulevard to be nearly finished by the 2015-16 school year, with the science addition ready by 2016-17.

GLEN ELLYN – Glen Ellyn experienced a taste of French culture when a delegation from Glen Ellyn’s Sister City of Le Bouscat, France, arrived in the village April 14. The delegates visited some of the important establishments in Glen Ellyn, including the fire station, Civic Center, College of DuPage and business district. This all led up to the big event, Market Français, on April 15, when the Civic Center was transformed into a market featuring a variety of French-inspired food, an accordion player serenading guests with French music, as well as games and prizes.

College of DuPage comes under federal investigation By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com In an event signaling more trouble for the long-embattled College of DuPage, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has issued a subpoena to the school for documents pursuant to an official criminal investigation. The subpoena, dated April 13, revolves around financial records for senior staff and trustees, communications and contracts involving college foundation members as far back as Jan. 1, 2009. The legal action follows a similar investigation by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office in recent months. “The College of DuPage and the College of DuPage Foundation are confident in the proper conduct of their affairs and will fully cooperate with any government investigation,” college spokesman Randall Samborn said. Board Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, who has been an outspoken critic of the current trustees and administration and is poised to become the next chairwoman, said the

“The College of DuPage and the College of DuPage Foundation are confident in the proper conduct of their affairs and will fully cooperate with any government investigation.” Randall Samborn College of DuPage spokesman

college intended to cooperate with law enforcement but also gave some stern advice. “I want to issue a warning to the administrators and any other individual at the college not to destroy any papers or transactions ... or any evidence of the potential of wrongdoing – that’s a criminal offense,” she said. Hamilton said she had reason to believe “something like that is going on” but declined to speak further. Chairwoman Erin Birt did not respond to a request for comment. A major focus of the investigation centers on the spending habits of President Robert Breuder, trustees and senior management. In November, it was revealed col-

lege officials expensed questionable items at on-campus restaurant Waterleaf, including meals for trustees and more than $1,000 in alcohol for a trustee Christmas party. The board also has been under fire for a $763,000 buyout awarded to Breuder earlier this year. The trustees were scheduled to meet April 16, but officials announced a cancellation, citing deference to the new members elected April 7. Samborn said there was “no connection between the receipt of the federal grand jury subpoenas and decisions not to hold the meeting.” The subpoena also delved into accusations that foundation board members inappropriately received preferential treatment for contracts

for work at the college. Particular controversy last month surrounded foundation board member Carla Burkhart, who got $630,000 in no-bid contracts for design work at the school through her firm Herricane Graphics. College and foundation officials have since defended the work, with foundation Executive Director Catherine Brod – who has announced she is stepping down in October – saying in a statement that foundation board members with contracts had been doing work for the school before serving on the board. A separate federal subpoena was issued April 13 for information about the college’s Suburban Law Enforcement Academy. The document asked for class records, instructor certificates, transcripts and communication between several top academy officials. The school is required to provide all records to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Lisle office or testify April 23 before a grand jury at the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago for the first subpoena and April 30 for the second.

POLICE REPORTS

Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Ringing Ears Q: I have ringing in my ears. It started about six months ago and it is constant. I’m worried that it might be a sign of a medical problem. What causes this?

A: What you are experiencing is called “tinnitus”. In most cases, it is more of an Dr. Terri Lightbody irritant than a major (630) 580-5777 problem. However, if you experience tinnitus, you should have it evaluated to ind the cause. Tinnitus can be perceived as many diferent sounds such as humming, ringing, or buzzing and it may be constant or periodic, varying in loudness. here can be several causes of tinnitus. It can be caused by loud noises, related to medical disorders such as ear infections or Meniere’s disease, or may be caused by use of certain drugs. here is also a very high incidence of tinnitus with the presence of hearing loss (especially highfrequency hearing loss). his relationship can be related to the well-established principle that a peripheral disorder such

as a sensori-neural hearing loss (within the cochlea) produces an increase in brain activity. In other words, the brain makes a ‘sound’ trying to compensate for the lack of stimulation in the cochlea. Oten, negative emotion is attached to the tinnitus sound and increased attention is paid to it – making it diicult for a patient to cope. Tinnitus becomes more diicult to deal with when there is uncertainty or fear involved. A hearing evaluation is the irst step to inding out what may be causing your tinnitus. Once a medical evaluation has ruled any physiological causes of tinnitus, a tinnitus treatment plan is created to help you manage the negative side-efects of tinnitus. he good news is that today, patients usually have several options, when it comes to their tinnitus treatment plan. At times, getting help is as simple as following a relaxation plan and ‘sound generators’ in certain environments. Other patients need personal sound masking devices or even a specialized hearing aid to help habituate the tinnitus.

Q&A

By MATT LA LUZ GLEN ELLYN – When you think of the best places for a public relations and marketing firm to hold a meeting, a family bedroom may not come to mind. However, for Deborah Sheridan that was the birthplace of her Glen Ellyn-based agency, IVY Marketing Group, which is currently celebrating 25 years in business. Sheridan of Glen Ellyn is the agency’s founder and president. Suburban Life reporter Matt La Luz recently spoke with Sheridan about how she got started, why her business has seen such success and what comes next after 25 years. La Luz: Tell me a little bit about your background. Sheridan: I was a journalism major and a minor in radio and television. I started out doing a little bit of work at a radio station doing some writing in Cincinnati while I was in college. Then I moved into account executive

work in PR and actually worked on the Wendy’s account. ... When we came up here 29 years ago, I worked as a writer for a magazine, DuPage Magazine, Deborah which is no longer Sheridan around. I worked for another agency here in Chicago. That agency was going to merge with another company to focus on the product aspect instead of the service aspect, which was my focus. They decided they didn’t want to keep with that focus. La Luz: When did you decide to start this business? How did you put things together? Sheridan: I had a fist full of clients – five clients – and each one of the clients was saying, “Debbie, just start your own company.” One night I had them here at the house and my husband said, “Debbie, you better get a place outside. I’m tired of people in our bedroom all the time.” I went out and got office space and we grew pretty quickly.

La Luz: Tell me a little more about the IVY approach and the business in general? Sheridan: We are the sole provider of marketing and PR services. We identify who the market is, what they have to offer and what is unique about our clients, and then we figure out how to communicate with that market. La Luz: How has the marketing business changed since you started 25 years ago to now? What differences are there? Sheridan: In 2006 the marketing world was changing so fast with social media, the papers were going away. It was really a difficult time so we had to completely re-educate ourselves on how to do marketing. ... There is so much math and science behind marketing today that we partner when we have a big project with people who have the technology that they can bring to the table. La Luz: What’s your personal philosophy for running a successful business? Sheridan: I’m of the philosophy that you really have to understand

the industry you serve in addition to knowing your own trade. Because we’re small, we can’t be all things to all people. There is a learning curve in all industries. You need to be able to know that learning curve inside and out in order to be the best for your clients. La Luz: Why do you think your business has been able to last so long? Sheridan: I’ve been blessed with great employees. There is a true dedication to our client’s success. We get to know them, how they like things done, what they need to do, and we’re constantly challenging ourselves to do a better job for our client. It’s always about what’s the best thing for the client; ... that’s what keeps you in business. La Luz: How much longer would you like to keep IVY Marketing Group going? Are you planning on keeping it for the next 25 years? Sheridan: I have no intentions of retiring. I love this business. I am not going anywhere.

Public schools require support for increasing responsibilities The inception and establishment of public schools began in the 16th and 17th centuries. Compared with today, the original expectations for America’s public schools were simple – teach basic reading, writing and arithmetic and cultivate the values of a democratic society (some history and civics implied). The creators of the original public schools assumed families and churchCOMMUNITY es bore the major responsibiliVOICE ty for raising the child. David Beginning in the 19th centuLarson ry, society began to assign more responsibilities to schools. Politicians and business leaders viewed public schools as the logical place to assimilate newly arrived immigrants and help with the social engineering of the first generation of the Industrial Age. This trend began and has accelerated ever since. Just look at what we have added through the decades: 1900 to 1940: Nutrition, speech, drama, immunization, halfday kindergarten, school lunch programs, business education, physical education and organized sports 1950s and ’60s: Driver’s education, consumer education, foreign language, career education, sex education and Advanced Placement programs 1970s and ’80s: Special education, bilingual education, drug and alcohol abuse education, keyboarding and computer education, full-day kindergarten, anti-smoking education, environmental education, sexual abuse prevention education, child abuse monitoring and Title IX (expanded sports for girls) 1990s and 2000s: HIV/AIDS education, expanded computer/ Internet education, integrated special education classes, tech prep and school to work programs, anti-bullying education and steroid abuse education. Despite not adding any minutes to the school day, public schools have heroically responded to this rising flood of expectations. Teachers are instructing more students in more subjects to higher levels in more creative and dynamic ways. Our public schools have prepared millions of people from all classes and backgrounds to achieve the American dream. Gov. Bruce Rauner and our legislators need to be reminded that adequate resources are critical to the continued efforts to meet this myriad of educational expectations. Appropriate investment in our local public schools is the best strategy to ensure all Illinois citizens can thrive and prosper.

OUR VIEW

SB 1 just another dose of the same bad medicine Some movie sequels we’re delighted to see in theaters, and some seem to have been conceived even though nobody wanted them. The arrival of Illinois Senate Bill 1 this year appears to fall into the latter camp. SB 1 is largely a tweaked version of the previous Legislature’s much-maligned Senate Bill 16, which generated a lot of headlines before meeting its end when it failed to come to a vote in the House. SB 16 would have restructured how funding was distributed around the state based on the neediness of the student populations in each district. Critics said the bill would unfairly take from wealthier districts without boosting overall education funding – DuPage County schools, for instance, were in line to lose $140 million in funding. SB16’s death was lauded in many corners as a good first step toward real education funding reform. “This is a huge success for the suburban taxpayers who would have been fleeced by the provisions of SB 16,” State Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, said in December. That success appears to have been a fleeting one as SB 1 now rears its ugly head. Like its predecessor, the bill hits west suburban districts disproportionately, with massive reductions in funding. The Illinois State Board of Education has projected what it would do for each district in the state, based on 2014 numbers, and it’s not pretty. For instance: • Community School District 200 in Wheaton stands to lose $7.5 million from its $12 million in funding. • Glenbard Township District 87 would

have to give up $5.4 million of the $6.8 million it got in 2014. • Community High School District 99 in Downers Grove would give up more than $3 million from the $3.9 million it got in 2014. • West Chicago District 33, on the other hand, would get a $5.3 million boost on top of its $14.4 million in funding. • The city of Chicago schools would gain more than $267 million in funding, on top of the about $1.3 billion it got for 2014. (Just to be clear, no one would actually give up money they got in 2014; these numbers just apply the proposed formula to what was paid out that year.) “This approach to education funding [in SB1] is a pure winners/losers scenario, which is not the way that I think we should approach education funding from the state perspective,” said state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, during a recent visit to the Suburban Life newsroom. Gutting the finances of relatively healthy districts to try to prop up currently underfunded districts is a terrible solution. When the push for SB 16 was in full swing, many legislators and school officials told Suburban Life that some amount of reapportionment was fair, but that the dollar amounts being considered were catastrophic to the areas that would lose money. They still are catastrophic under SB 1. It’s good that school funding formulas are under scrutiny, because the current model is terrible, too. This conversation needs to continue. But this bill does more harm than good, and it should be scrapped.

SOUND OFF

‘School should never be used as a free baby-sitting service’ What a firestorm [that has resulted from my initial Sound Off], but I stand by my theory. To the parent making tough choices, if you are already struggling to achieve the American Dream, then adding children to the mix won’t be helping your situation. Next, one should never need two incomes to support a family. If you do, you do either need a better paying job or you are living above your means. To the reader that worries about someone dying or becoming disabled, that’s what insurance policies are for ... Whatever your situation, the school system should never be used as a free baby-sitting service.

School District 201, for voting down a much-needed referendum for a third time. Especially sad is the incorrect assumption made by those who promoted the mentality that the money would somehow pay teachers’ pensions rather than facility improvements and security upgrades. I guess you can’t quite figure out what is really important to provide a safe learning environment, which would ultimately enhance your property values. The district and board were diligent, and you were cowards.

Hillary Clinton is not above the law Who can be the U.S. secretary of state and hide all her emails on a private server at home in clear violation of federal regulation? And then, when under subpoena to provide the emails, you erase the whole server. And here’s the amazing part, she does not face prosecution like we would if we did the same thing. Hillary Clinton, the new champion of the middle class. When she is president, we will all be able to ignore the law too, won’t we?

I just read that the village of La Grange Park is going to spend a lot of their funds to repair the roads near the Heatherdale subdivision. Those roads were beaten up by the heavy construction traffic for the better part of three years. I hope La Grange Park and [the] surrounding towns realize in the future, when a builder has a large remodeling project, I hope they are responsible for fixing all the roads that lead to and from these projects. Why should taxpayers have to pay for the damage?

Wheaton City Council needs to accept the fact that the downtown area and the [Downtown Wheaton Association] is a fraction of the city of Wheaton. As long as the Wheaton City Council keeps providing this supposed entity money, because of its inefficiency and monumental lack of self-reliance, it will never learn to budget and financially plan. Once the members of the DWA become solely invested, they may quickly learn and thrive in a way that would attract more shoppers and businesses.

WHEATON – The location, decor and ambience have changed, but the service and food remain impeccable. Lu’s Sushi & Chinese, which closed its Glen Ellyn doors last summer after the owners lost their lease, opened a Wheaton location in the fall to much fanfare. While patrons of the old Lu’s will notice the restaurant’s email and phone number remain the same even after the move – something the owners kept intact to ensure they would not lose their faithful fan base – the new space provides appealing upgrades. First, the new Town Square Wheaton location offers a cozier experience compared to the former digs. There are about 15 tables in the main dining room, as well as an adjacent private area separated by a string curtain. Asian lanterns hang from the ceiling and the walls are adorned with green leaf prints, consistent with the all-natural theme, which also resonates in the restaurant’s many plants and the ornately carved vegetables turned into flower garnishes that add their visual pop to some main courses. For more culinary drama, the new Lu’s positioned the sushi bar and open kitchen next to the dining area so customers can watch as their Chinese and Japanese meals are prepared. The menu remains extensive, offering Chinese dishes including hand-pulled noodle soups, along with sushi, sashimi and traditional Japanese fare. Beer, wine and sake are part of the full bar’s selections. My date and I arrived about 5 p.m. on a Friday, narrowly beating the happy hour patrons – the restaurant soon became comfortably crowded, which I took as a sign the place has been well-received by both new and old clientele. We were seated immediately and promptly welcomed by our server. Those unfamiliar with Lu’s or Asian cuisine might be a little overwhelmed with the

Glenbard West pitcher Justin O’Neal pitches in an away game Tuesday against Hinsdale Central. O’Neal, a junior, headlines a young pitching staff for the Hilltoppers this season.

O’Neal, pitching staff leads way for Hilltoppers By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – With a host of new faces on the diamond this spring, the Glenbard West baseball team will gladly take its record of 9-5 through the first 14 games of the season. “We are happy to be 9-5,” Glenbard West coach Andy Schultz said. “We’ve won a couple of good baseball games; Hinsdale South [a 4-1 victory April 6] was a good win, and the next day we beat Wheaton Warrenville South, which was a really well-played game. “So far, so good. We are making progress and getting better in certain areas. I’m very happy with how it has gone up to this point.”

Live video online

The biggest surprise has been on the pitching mound as the Hilltoppers didn’t return a single varsity pitcher from last spring. But a young staff, headlined by junior Justin O’Neal, has been strong and during the past 10 games has given up three runs or less seven times. “Our pitching has been better than I thought,” Schultz said. “It’s been a nice little surprise. We still are not that deep, but the guys we need to rely on have done a really nice job for us.” In his last time out, O’Neal allowed no earned runs in six innings in Glenbard West’s 5-3 win against Hinsdale Central on April 17. “I’ve expected this out of him,” Schultz said. “He was our best pitcher over the summer. He throws the ball

really, really well and he has a great work ethic. He brings a good attitude every day, and for being a junior, he’s extremely composed on the mound.” Schultz also gives a lot of credit to veteran catcher Will Simoneit, one of the few returning starters from last year. “He’s been unbelievable,” he said. “He’s been swinging the bat really well, but more importantly, with so many junior arms with not a lot of experience, he’s been such a good mentor to the guys. He’s helping them through and being a coach on the field. We would not be anywhere close to where we are without his influence.” Offensively, in the win against the Red Devils, Matt Shoub went 3 for 4 with

an RBI while Simoneit hit a home run. On April 16, Glenbard West knocked off Morton 5-3. Simoneit was 3 for 3 with a double, Alex Martenson went 3 for 3 with an RBI and Rudy Litavsky was 2 for 3 with a run scored. Sam Kaske, Arno Curtis and Ryan Coleman combined to strike out five while allowing seven hits. The Hilltoppers take on Proviso East tonight before opening a threegame series with Oak Park on Saturday. The Huskies currently sit atop the WSS standings. “Oak Park has been playing really well,” Schultz said. “If we are going to be competing for the top of the conference, Saturday is a huge day obviously. It is another good opportunity.”

Glenbard South drops two games after six-game winning streak SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The Glenbard South baseball team saw its six-game winning streak come to a halt in a 2-1 nonconference loss to Plainfield North on Saturday. The Raiders were held to three hits in the contest. Robbie McGimpsey also pitched a strong game, yielding six hits while striking out six in 6 1/3 innings. Two days later, the squad was again held to three hits in a 5-0 Metro Suburban conference loss to Wheaton Academy on April 20. Dominic Fazzari struck out five in six frames. On April 16, the squad had

notched a 9-5 victory against Chicago Christian in a game in which Glenbard South jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Joey Atkinson and Kyle Carli had two hits apiece with Carli also driving in four runs. Fabian Garcia worked 5 1/3 innings on the mound, striking out six. Brian Ashe finished the game in relief. On April 14, the Raiders beat IC Catholic Prep 1-0 as Fazzari threw a complete-game shutout, striking out eight. Matt Schlipper drove in the lone run.

SOFTBALL Scoring runs in every in-

ning, the Raiders knocked off Aurora Central Catholic 17-3 in five frames April 16. Payton Carli had three hits and two RBIs and Tricia Weigand knocked in five runs. Ashley Cohen also had two hits and three RBIs. Taylor Carli pitched all five innings, striking out eight. A day later, the squad lost 8-6 to Naperville North. Mady Carli drove in a pair of runs. Glenbard South also dropped a 4-3 decision in eight innings to Willowbrook on April 15. Ashley Cohen and Holly Taylor had two hits apiece and Bailee Flanagan drove in two runs.

runs scored and Hallie Park drove in two runs. Caylin Potter came on in relief and allowed no earned runs in five innings, striking out two. She also worked out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation in the seventh without allowing a run. In the first game, Kaitlyn Ohrnstein went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Katie Stone had two RBIs. On April 17, Shelley Warmolts went 2 for 2 with two homers and five RBIs in an 8-3 win against Wheaton North. Porter also had a home run and three runs scored and Rachel Terwilliger was 2 for 2 with two doubles and three RBIs. Potter yielded no earned runs and five hits in a complete-game effort. A day earlier, Glenbard West defeated Hinsdale South 7-3. Bridget McGregor was 3 for 3 with a walk, and Porter, Terwilliger, Ohrnstein and Isabel Hermanson all had two hits apiece. Potter pitched four innings of scoreless ball, striking out four.

GLEN ELLYN – With longtime pitcher Taylor Langtry now in a Bucknell University uniform and only two starters returning in the field, head coach Mary McGrane knew there might be some early struggles for her Glenbard West softball team. But with West Suburban Silver play beginning this week, the Hilltoppers seem to be hitting their stride at just the right time. The squad won four out of five games last week, culminating with a double-header split with Wheaton Warrenville South on April 18. “Last week was a good week for us,” McGrane said. “We played our best ball [last week], starting with our game against Lake Park [on April 13]. “The first seven or eight games, we struggled offensively and defensively. A lot of our kids were new to the varsity level and were getting used to the speed of the game. I knew we would take our hits, but we are starting to hit our stride.” On Saturday, after losing the opener 7-5 to the Tigers, Glenbard West bounced back to defeat WWS 7-6 in the second game. The Hilltoppers scored four runs in the first inning and then added three more in the second. Katherine Porter went 2 for 3 with a triple and two

Benet retires jersey of Wisconsin standout Lisle Mayor Broda declares April 16 as Frank Kaminsky Day By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com LISLE – Frank Kaminsky is revered by Lisle residents for his larger-thanlife presence both on and off the basketball court. A week and a half after leading the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team to its first National Championship game in 74 years, the 7-footer returned home April 16 for Frank Kaminsky Day and a jersey retirement ceremony at his high school alma mater, Benet Academy. In front of a packed gym of friends, family, students, teachers and local officials, the 22-year-old Kaminsky took the stage, accepting a framed Benet No. 44 jersey and taking the opportunity to share a personal message of perseverance. “People who are great are the people who are good at failing,” he said to the

crowd. “I’m proud to say that I’m one of the best failures of all time.” Kaminsky, who was seldom recruited as a high school basketball player, recalled one of his first practices as a Frank freshman on the Univer- Kaminsky sity of Wisconsin team. Frustrated by his performance, he approached Badgers’ coach Bo Ryan. “He looked me in the eye and said, ‘Get out of my gym,’” Kaminsky said. “He said, ‘Get out of my gym and walk back in with a smile on your face because that’s how you’re going to attack every single day.’” The pep talk gave Kaminsky a new perspective on basketball, academics and life. “You’ve got to have a smile on your face. You’ve got to be excited to do things,” Kaminsky said. “And that’s how I attacked every single day at Wisconsin.” Those who know Kaminsky remember him in a similar light. Corky Fennell was his kindergarten teacher when Kaminsky was at Lisle’s St. Joan of Arc School. Not only was he the size of most third-graders, but he

was always one of the most outgoing and personable children in class. “Even as a 5-year-old, he was a very bubbly and animated child,” Fennell said. “Watching him in the tournament the past two years was kind of emotional for me because I still see him as a little boy with perfect form knocking down shots from the freethrow line. “I think the exposure he’s received is really amazing because the nation has now gotten to know the kind, funny, outgoing person he truly is.” During Thursday’s hourlong ceremony, Benet Principal Steve Marth, boys basketball coach Gene Heidkamp and Athletic Director Gary Goforth were among those who lauded Kaminsky’s accomplishments. “We gather this afternoon to celebrate the fine gentleman that Frank has become, the values that he has embodied both on and off the court and the admirable way in which he has comported himself as a student-athlete,” Marth said. “He has remained true to the to his Benet roots.” Lisle Mayor Joe Broda also partook in the ceremonies, declaring April 16 Frank Kaminsky Day in the village. The local recognition is just one of

the many honors bestowed upon Kaminsky in the past two months, including 2015 John P. Wooden Award, 2015 Naismith and Oscar Robertson trophies; 2015 Big Ten Player of the Year; and the 2015 AP, Sporting News, Coaches’ Association and USA Today player of the year awards. His expanding trophy case is a testament to how far he has come as a basketball player. After barely playing in his first two seasons at Wisconsin, the Badgers’ center averaged 13.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game as a junior, helping the team advance to the Final Four. For an encore in his senior year, Kaminsky led the team with 18.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game as Wisconsin advanced to the National Championship game where it fell to Duke. But even after the fame and fortune – Kaminsky is projected to be selected in the middle of the first round in the NBA Draft on June 26 – he attests being honored by his home town is just as important. “It’s weird to think about,” Kaminsky said of his new-found fame. “But it’s awesome to get this kind of reception here. There’s not much that you can say other than it’s awesome.”

by Kendall Fletcher. Chicago’s Press continued her dominance after the interval. In the 50th minute, she set up a wide open Hemmings in the area, only to see the Colorado native’s low shot comfortably saved by a well-positioned Solo. Three minutes later, Red Stars captain Lori Chalupny released Press one-on-one with the Reign goalkeeper, who used all of her experience and class to defy her national teammate’s attempted fake-out and deny the opportunity. Seattle nearly punished the home side for the missed chances when Karina LeBlanc parried Kim Little’s 63rd-minute stinger wide of the frame for a stunning save. Ten minutes later, the spotlight was back on Reign shot-stopper Solo, who did an excellent job of tipping DiBernardo’s powerful drive around the post. Just when it seemed the Red Stars might have to settle for a draw in their home opener, Press produced a final piece of brilliance to send the home fans into ecstasy. The California native shocked the opposition backline by sprinting on to a bouncing ball and confidently slotting past Solo for the dramatic stoppage-time winner. The Chicago Red Stars hope to make it consecutive wins to start the season when they host superstar Alex Morgan and Portland Thorns FC on April 25. Chicago, Illinois – Professional women’s soccer outfit Chicago Red Stars opened its National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season with a bang on Saturday night, defeating defending regular season champions Seattle Reign FC 3-2, courtesy of a dramatic stoppage-time winner by forward Christen Press. The U.S. Women’s National Team star had a standout performance in the victory, as she bagged two goals as well as the assist on teammate Jen Hoy’s first-half tally. After an uneventful opening half hour, Seattle were first to get on the board. U.S. international Megan Rapinoe swung in a corner kick from the right and saw the ball make its way past the outstretched frame of Chicago goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc and to the far post, where it was nodded home by Beverly Yanez. The home side pulled level mere moments later, as Vanessa DiBernardo’s delicate header found its way through to Press and the 26-year-old made it 1-1 with a clinical finish past Reign netminder Hope Solo. Energized by the equalizer, the Red Stars kept pushing and took the lead in the 32nd minute. Press got in behind the Seattle defense once more – this time on an exquisite long pass by defender Taryn Hemmings – and the striker’s low centering ball picked out Hoy at the doorstep for a simple tap-in. The lead was not to last, however, as another Rapinoe corner in the 39th minute saw the ball cleared back out to the midfielder, whose cross in from the right was converted via close-range header
