D-41 OKs renovation for Abraham Lincoln library By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The Glen Ellyn School District 41 Board of Education approved a renovation of the library at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School at a meeting Monday. The renovation was greenlighted by a 4-2 vote. It is estimated to cost $150,000 for demolition and construction, according to board documents. Other projected costs include furniture replacement not to exceed $55,000 and $30,000 for new cubbies. The design of the new library will have a look similar to the renovated library at Hadley Junior High School. Updates will include removal of the existing computer lab, improved wall furnishings, new carpeting, new furniture and the installation of cubbies for coats and shoes. Although various capital projects were on the agenda, the library renovation proved the most contentious, with board members and attendees raising concerns about finances and the possible need for kindergarten classrooms to inhabit the space. District resident and board member elect Stephanie Clark read a letter from various community members urging the board to hold off on moving forward with the planned library renovation because there is a possibility the library could be reconfigured for classrooms. Fellow resident and board member elect Kurt Buchholz agreed the district should further evaluate the library’s potential as classroom space before coming to a final decision. “We want to make sure that we don’t pigeonhole ourselves,” he said.

“We just don’t feel like it’s money well spent at this point. Hold it off for a year and see what we have.” Kurt Buchholz District 41 board member “We just don’t feel like it’s money well spent at this point. Hold it off for a year and see what we have.” Board member Erica Nelson said the project was thoroughly conceived and accompanied by research, oversight and financial planning. “There is much more context than showing up one day and saying, ‘Hey, let’s improve the library,’” she said. “It is a hugely utilized spaced. I personally think these are dollars well spent and it’s going to the kids and it’s now.” While there was discussion of the possibility of repurposing the space and using it for more classrooms, the project was ultimately seen as a timely one. Board member Dean Elger said the decision was an indicator of the administration’s progress and ability to make improvements sooner rather than later. “The one thing I admire about this superintendent and the administration is looking at how we can make improvements today.” he said. “It’s our job to make a decision and move forward.” The renovation will begin at the end of the school year and is expected to be completed by mid-August. Board members Drew Ellis and John Kenwood voted against the measure.

District 41 invites community to join facilities task force By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Glen Ellyn School District 41 is seeking community input by forming a Facilities Community Task Force to address issues with space and overcrowding at district schools. The district will host an informational meeting on the task force at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the library at Hadley Junior High School, 240 Hawthorne Blvd. Considerations of the task force include how to create space to support full-day kindergarten, remove portables at Hadley, relieve overcrowding at elementary schools and allow for flexible learning space and adequate core space at all five schools. District 41 Chief Communications Officer Erika Krehbiel said involving the community along with administration will lead to a more informed and practical decision. “We have a lot of stakeholders – there are taxpayers, community leadership [and] parents,” she said. “In order to make an informed decision of what to do next, we need to involve all the stakeholders.” The task force is open to any community members that would like to offer input and learn more, according to Krehbiel. “I’m encouraged by the number of people that have already expressed interest in working with us,” she said. Krehbiel also emphasized the task force will be crucial in determining next steps the district will take regarding the developments. Participants will have the opportunity to analyze the benefits of a few different proposed solutions, including building a kindergarten through fifthgrade school, building an early learning center for prekindergarten and kindergarten, and adding onto and modifying existing schools to improve facilities. The task force will present a final report to the board, which will use the information for future plans. Superintendent Paul Gordon would like to see a completed report by next December with one possible solution for facilities issues at the elementary schools and one for the junior high. Gordon anticipates the task force’s ideas will be beneficial moving forward. “We want a really broad tent that allows all voices, all perspectives to come to the table and really talk to us about what they want for District 41,” he said. “Not for today, but for 10, 20, 50 years down the road.”

GLEN ELLYN – The Glen Ellyn community sent a clear message on Earth Day: the efforts of a small community can make a big difference on the environment. At least that’s what the Glen Ellyn Park District and Glen Ellyn Sustainability Group hoped to convey April 22 at their 2015 Earth Day Festival at the Lake Ellyn Boathouse. The festival – which was free to the public – was themed around food this year, providing information on growing organic vegetables, locally sourced foods, composting and more. This is the first time the Earth Day Festival has incorporated a specific theme. Earth friendly organizations such as GardenWorks Project, Prairie Food Co-Op, Sweet Home Organics and SCARCE offered information and advice. Live music showcased the versatility of the Native American flute with the band Something Different and night sky viewing with a telescope was provided by Naperville Astronomical Organization. The festival organizers hoped to open people’s eyes to the issues of the environment and help them find ways to reduce their carbon footprint. Renae Frigo, event organizer and naturalist with the Glen Ellyn Park District, believes even the little gestures can help create a more environmentally friendly world. Frigo advised to consider a hybrid

to families in need through the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry. “I’ve always liked helping people,” Levitt said. “It’s so important for people to get fresh produce so they can be healthier people in general.” Glen Ellyn resident Leroy Boeckelman said he’s doing his part to help by recycling, gardening, driving an environmentally friendly vehicle and building compost bins for various friends and organizations. He also follows a special 60-second shower routine to conserve energy and water. “I take just a minute shower,” Boeckelman said. “I turn it on for 10 seconds, rinse, turn it off, soap, rinse for another 13 seconds. And then I’m gone.” Glen Ellyn-based organization SCARCE (School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education) passed out leak detection tablets, which can detect water leaks and save water and money. Kim Marsin and her wife, Rachel Reklau are sustainable farmers for Sweet Home Organics. They represented their Villa Park business, which offers organically grown seedlings free of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and genetically modified seeds. They believe every day provides an opportunity to lead a more green and environmentally conscious lifestyle. “Honestly, Earth Day is every day for me,” Marsin said. “ I think the Earth feeds my soul so if I can feed the Earth, I’m feeding myself.”

4 Embattled COD President Breuder takes Third federal subpoena seeks medical leave days before potential ouster COD video, audio recordings By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com The controversial president of the College of DuPage won’t be in office when trustees potentially take a scheduled vote on whether to put him on paid administrative leave today. The school Robert a n n o u n c e d Breuder Tuesday night President Robert Breuder would be taking an approved medical leave beginning Wednesday. The college’s one-sentence news release did not state who approved the leave, how long it would last or who would assume Breuder’s responsibilities while he was away. Breuder did not attend the board’s March or February meetings. College spokesman Ran-

Be the first to know Be the first to read about news in your area by signing up for our breaking news text alerts at http://shawurl.com/texts. dall Samborn said the leave fell under the Family Medical Leave Act and “was approved under the policies that exist for any employee.” He said he had no further information. The announcement came just less than 48 hours before the board’s next meeting, where the new, post-election board plans to consider a slew of topics surrounding the months-long image crisis and legal firestorm in which the school is embroiled. Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, whose close alliance with the three Clean Slate reform candidates who swept this month’s election

is expected to bring her the chairwomanship, said Breuder’s leave came just after the four sent a letter to Breuder informing him of a desire to call the meeting today. “He had knowledge of the agenda, then came his decision for medical leave,” she said Tuesday night. Included on the agenda is putting Breuder on paid administrative leave, authorizing a state-run audit from the Illinois Auditor General, approving an internal investigation, suspending all house accounts at the on-campus Waterleaf Restaurant as well as all travel and entertainment reimbursement for trustees, and more. Board documents, provided to Suburban Life by Hamilton, said Breuder “may not be able to achieve the philosophy, mission, vision and goals of the college.”

How to use video effectively for local marketing SPONSORED BY

By J.Tom Shaw Video is a powerful marketing tool for small business. Thanks to high speed Internet, YouTube and Facebook, and the rise of mobile prevalence, more videos are viewed online than ever before. In the past, using video to reach an audience was an expensive proposition for many small businesses. Production costs and pricy broadcast advertising schedules were too expensive to run with adequate frequency. Fast-forward to today, and any business with a marketing plan can incorporate video affordably and effectively. Below are a few tips for how you can use video to drive traffic and grow your business: Video is an excellent component to a business website. When a potential customer is searching your website, offer a relevant, high quality video segment. Content can include benefits of your product or service, interviews with you or your team. Best of all, testimonials from actual satisfied customers can be just as effective as word of mouth advertising. Video is an effective way to improve

Search Engine Optimization (SEO). YouTube has dominated the video view field for several years now. Owned by Google, YouTube videos receive favorable search result status in Google searches. Your business can host your videos on YouTube, and link back to your website. You can also display the video on your website using a YouTube widget. In both cases, that linking will improve your chances of getting found by people searching for your product or service. Video rocks on social media. Facebook allows videos to auto play in the news feed. Experts have noted that video can outperform organic reach over text and photo content on Facebook. Social media video for business should be friendly, fun, and informal. Show you and your employees active in the community, having fun with customers, or demonstrating some helpful tips. For examples of these and many other videos, please visit www.ShawMediaDigital. com/video.

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com The College of DuPage has been served its third federal subpoena this month, with authorities seeking recordings of the school on the day administrators received the first two. The subpoena requests video and audio from 2:30 to 11:59 p.m. April 13 of the interior and exterior of the college’s Student Resource Center, according to school spokesman Randall Samborn. The center houses the office of President Robert Breuder, who is on medical leave as of Wednesday. “The College of DuPage is fully cooperating with any federal investigation,” Samborn said. On April 13, the college was served two federal subpoenas, following a similar investigation by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. Of the two, one revolved around financial records for

senior staff and trustees, communications, and contracts involving college foundation members as far back as Jan. 1, 2009, and focused on the spending habits of Breuder, trustees and senior management. It also delved into accusations that members of the College of DuPage Foundation Board of Directors inappropriately received preferential treatment for contracts for work at the school. The second subpoena sought information about the college’s Suburban Law Enforcement Academy, including class records, instructor certificates, transcripts and communication between top academy officials. The third was served April 16, according to Samborn. In addition to requests for the April 13 recordings, it also asks video and audio of the resource center between April 13 and 16 be preserved.

New boutique brings more color to downtown By MATT LA LUZ

If you go

mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Splashes of color and diversely patterned clothes are brightening the space at 482 N. Main St. in downtown Glen Ellyn this spring. Norabella Boutique, which opened its doors March 13, offers a range of items, including dresses, jeans, tops, jewelry and natural bath and body products. Boutique owner Sharon Dotson said it’s the bright colors, unique patterns and designs, and affordable pricing that make her boutique a special one in downtown Glen Ellyn. “Ours is unique. We go out of our way to find things that are different. That is what a boutique is about,” Dotson said. Dotson also prides herself on dipping into the product lines of various designers and creators from DuPage County such as O My-My Bath, a bath salt business based in Glen El-

Norabella, which took the place of previous store Anastasia, also holds private parties and events, recently hosting a Ladies Night Out party. Dotson’s store carries clothing for women extra small to plus sizes, and she said her

products usually fall within the $35 to $90 range, with some pieces that are a little pricier. “Anything they pick in the store – I want them to feel comfortable,” Dotson said. Though Dotson has shifted some of her attention to clothing, she got her start making jewelry. She owns A Bella

Bead, another Glen Ellyn store that opened two years ago and offers custom-made jewelry and classes to learn about the jewelry-making process. Dotson started her journey making jewelry in 1996 while planning her outfit for a wedding. After not finding any jewelry to go with her particular outfit, she decided to make her own necklace and bracelet. Numerous compliments came in from others at the wedding, followed by inquiries from people asking for her special touch. The transition from jewelry to clothing, while a natural one for her, was not without its hardships. Dotson runs the business

without a hired staff, relying mainly on friends and family to help put the shop together. “I have a great bunch of girls that are very supportive of me,” Dotson said.”They come in and they help me whenever they have free time.” Dotson has relied on the help of all her family members and friends, including her daughters, Jamie and Kristie, her sister Candice Gentile, who helped her with event planning, and close friend Irene Kozlowski, who has served as the Norabella store manager. “They come in because they want to help me. They want to see me succeed.” Dotson said. Mike Formento, executive director of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce, thinks that Dotson’s trust within the community and high level of costumer service will make her business a successful one. “People trust her and are willing to work with her as she services their needs,” Formento said.

Many things are dependent on good physical condition. Maintaining good nutritional habits, regular exercise and strength training can help. Regular physical exams are also important. Also, take good care of your feet by using good shoes. Board approves annexation and new subdivision By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The Glen Ellyn Village Board of Trustees unanimously approved plans for construction of a new subdivision April 20, with projected development of 10 lots of single family homes. The property on the west side of Sunnybrook Road between Bemis Road and Jenna Court was located in unincorporated DuPage County, but will now be a part of Glen Ellyn, and is contiguous to the village’s previous limits, according to village documents. The lots will be 14,000 to 25,000 square feet and the subdivision will include a cul de sac and water detention pond, documents state. The board approved the property’s annexation, the extension of Glen Ellyn’s water and sanitary sewer to the property at the developer’s expense, and the execution of a recapture agreement for the proposed water and sanitary sewer main extensions. Jerry McKeown, owner of developer McKeown Classic Homes, said the subdivision will be called Brookhaven and will mirror the Brookshire subdivision off Jenna Court. Board members indicated neighbors of the area expressed concern about stormwater runoff from both the Brookshire and Brookhaven subdivisions. McKeown said because of the calculations and design put into the project, there should be no such issues with Brookhaven. “Actually it should improve the water flow off-site on Brookhaven because it is further downhill actually than Brookshire was,” he said. The developer also explained most water should hit a depression and divert into the detention pond on the subdivision. The new subdivision’s homeowners association will be held accountable to maintain the drains and inlands to the detention pond, according to village Planner Michele Stegall. Stegall also said if the association fails to fulfill its responsibilities, the village may perform maintenance and bill the association for work done.

Did you know that M-Day was on April 21? That was the day Google decided to wake businesses up to the mobile revolution. Mobile has been growing for years, but the pace is picking up. In 2013, searches done on mobile devices outnumbered searches done on desktop computers. Businesses should have taken notice then (if not before) and made their websites easily viewable on phones and tablets. But, many businesses missed the memo or ignored it. The memo is coming out loud and clear now from a source that should be paid attention to….Google. Google’s “memo” was published on February 26, 2015. It included on April 21, 2015 Google will be implementing algorithm changes that will cause websites that are mobile optimized to be displayed higher in search results. Google’s announcement states, “Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal…Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices. “In lay terms this means that if a business wants it’s website to come up early to people searching on a phone, their website needs to be easy to read on a

phone. This means that a person should not have to zoom in or pinch and pull the screen to read the content. To see if a website is mobile friendly, use a mobile site tester online. There are two ways to have a mobile optimized website. The first is a “bandaid” solution. It is having a separate mobile companion site. It is usually an abbreviated version of the desktop site. It typically has the most commonly viewed information, such as address, hours, and click to call function. The better long term solution is having a responsive design. A responsive website is a site that adjusts the content to be viewable on any size screen. The advantage is having all of the content on a website available to people viewing it on a mobile device. Unless a business wants to see a decline in traffic (and more importantly potential customers) to their website, it is critical to have a mobile friendly website. If Google penalizes a website for not being mobile optimized, it will definitely result in less visits because more than half of searches are taking place on a mobile device and over 90% of people searching do not go past the first page of search results.

The College of DuPage announced Tuesday evening President Robert Breuder is taking a medical leave of absence.

OUR VIEW

Breuder’s leave one more step in the right direction for COD It’s the result that many people wanted, but not the way most wanted it. College of DuPage President Robert Breuder’s medical leave accomplishes something that was necessary a long time ago – he’s no longer running the school. To begin the process of rebuilding the community’s trust in the institution, the man who for many symbolized all that was wrong with the current way of doing business had to go. If Breuder is in fact seriously ill, we wish him a speedy recovery. If it was simply a cynical effort to evade a likely vote Thursday that would probably put him on leave anyway ... well, then we’re simply relieved that he’s no longer in charge, however it happened. The new Board of Trustees has a lot to figure out in their first weeks. Who is going to run the school on a day-to-day basis? How should they respond to all the federal and county subpoenas flying around? How can the administration rebuild trust with the stu-

dents, faculty and community? Who will get the title of “president” when Breuder is finally, permanently out of the job? The subpoenas that have been lodged by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office aren’t proof there was any illegal activity. There have been accusations of document destruction by Board Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, and those accusations definitely need to be investigated thoroughly. If there was any criminal activity related to the finances of the College of DuPage Foundation, it needs to be prosecuted. We don’t know what those subpoenas will turn up, if there will be charges or if this will all just fizzle out. One thing we do know – with the new members of the board elected this month, and Breuder taking a medical leave – the ranks of leadership are changing at the school. We will all be watching to be sure the new leaders do a better job than the old.

There’s nothing wrong with two-income families To the individual who stated, “School should never be used as a free baby-sitting service,” your statement, “One should never need two incomes to support a family.” First of all, the vast majority of households in the U.S. are two-income households (59.1 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics), so you are condemning most of the families in the United States. You have no right to make such a statement based on the financial needs of others. Second, many women work because they choose to work and obtain fulfillment from having both a career and a family. And who are you to judge that women cannot have both a career and a family?

People with jobs should be allowed to adopt rescue animals

By C.R. Walker Here’s a question for you. What is something you can learn to do that can provide lots of pleasure, improve your health and well-being and put you in position to possibly save someone’s life as well as your own? The answer is swimming. The Glen Ellyn Park District’s Learn to Swim program provides a positive, funfilled opportunity for children and adults to learn skills that will help reduce the number of accidents as well as provide opportunities for lifelong enjoyment. Classes are filling quickly and some will start in early June. Visit www.gepark. org for more details. Parents & Tot Water Exploration will introduce your infant to the water and you will learn how to manage an aquatic emergency as well as receive CPR instruction.

Pre-Beginning class is for children between three and five years of age. They will be taught how to respect and enjoy the water, rather than fear it, and will also learn some basic skills. There are three different levels of Journey classes. Many different skills will be taught, and as progress is made, you will advance, learning things like the front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, as well as the butterfly and sidestroke. Private swim lessons, which are 30-minute one-on-one lessons tailored to meet personal needs and goals, are available for children between three and 12 and for those 16 and older. Additional aquatic programs, including snorkeling, springboard diving, scuba, aqua aerobics and aqua zumba are also being offered this summer. Those interested in competitive swimming should consider the Glen Ellyn Gators swim team. With so many offerings, now’s the time to sign up to learn how to swim, because mastering this skill at a young age can benefit you throughout your life.

Contact the Glen Ellyn Park District at (630) 858-2462 for more information.

Don’t blame the governor

Would you be surprised if someone was elected president if one parent was a high-level government official, the other was a Ph.D. and global expert on metalworking, a grandparent was a vice president of a substantial bank, who went to Harvard, held leadership positions, graduated, got a law degree and served in the Senate, would you be surprised? Because that’s our president, Barack Obama.

Stop the interruptions on TV I don’t understand why the TV reporters and the weather reporters always have to interrupt the program when they can wait until 4 o’clock at the news that is not that important. Then they break in, you have 10, 40 commercials, then they break in again, then they have 20, 30 commercials and you miss your program, you miss other things on

Full-day kindergarten isn’t about baby-sitting, it’s extended learning To the reader opposed to full-day kindergarten – you are right, kindergarten is not free baby-sitting. It is an extended learning opportunity, a socialization tool and an ability to build bonds outside the household. More than 90 percent of Illinois elementary schools have full-day kindergarten. This isn’t about baby-sitting, it’s about rethinking a system to be in line with today’s expectations on education. So before you cast judgment on dual income families (because that’s what you’re doing, under the guise of a debate about full-day kindergarten), take a look at the bigger picture beyond Downers Grove. There is a whole world out there and I for one would like my children to learn about it – taught by trained educators, not baby sitters.

I wish that the DuPage law enforcement agencies would stop arresting people for marijuana possession, especially when the people they are arresting are older than 21 years old. It’s frustrating to see it in the newspaper and online that people are being arrested for this drug that is not harming anyone and is now legal in four states in the country. I’m sure the law enforcement agencies in DuPage could use their resources to fight real crime in this county.

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Getting fit can be a daunting task for many, whether you have been active before or not. The B Fit B Active Expo, hosted by the Kane County Chronicle and Suburban Life Media, featured a panel of health and fitness experts from around the area discussing ways to help jump-start and sustain a healthy lifestyle. The five professionals covered ways to take care of your body, how to set attainable fitness goals and how to turn a passion for exercise and nutrition into a successful business during the event April 22 at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. CrossFit trainer and nutritional enthusiast Britt Crow said fitness, no matter the sport or exercise of choice, was about choosing long-term habits, not short-term goals. “It’s finding a fitness routine that’s going to give you something you can do for life,” Crow said. Crow joined Ron Anderson, who started several fitness and medical centers; world-class Ironman competitor and nutritional expert Ryan Giuliano; injury prevention expert and triathlon competitor Dr. Kevan Ketterling; and fitness entrepreneur Chris Leathers on the panel. Anderson stressed that

those looking to make a change in their fitness habits need to drop the monthly binge on green detox drinks and make it permanent. “If you have a goal in mind, whether personally, professionally, whatever it is – you have to make a conscious decision that that’s what you want,” Anderson said. “After that, you have to learn what it is going to take today for me to do so that tomorrow I can be one step closer to that goal.” Properly setting goals was important for reaching them, Giuliano said. When he started his Ironman training in college, he couldn’t even swim the length of a pool, he said. But by creating specific, measurable, realistic and timely goals, he was able to become nationally competitive in the sport. He encourages the same process for all those going through the highs and lows on their individual journeys. Ketterling said throughout the training experience, it’s important not only to have proper cross-training and form but to listen to your body when it tells you to take a break. Leathers said he encourages people of all ages to start and chase what they want in business and in fitness. “It’s never too late to start,” he said. “And don’t let the fear of failure stop you from achieving your goals.”

was released by Chalupny and did well to release a right-footed effort that seemed destined for the back of the net until it was tipped wide by Angerer’s fingertips. Instead of celebrating a third Chicago tally, the fans at Benedictine University saw their team’s lead cut in half just before the half-hour mark. Allie Long found Sinclair at the top of the penalty box and the Canada striker hit a low shot that found its way through traffic and inside the left post for a clinic in precision goal-scoring. Portland nearly leveled the match four minutes from the break, LeBlanc rushing off her line and coming up with a stunning block to deny Sinclair’s toe-poke from close range. Thorns FC finally tied things up in the opening stages of the second period, as Shim pounced on a partial clearance by taking a touch at the edge of the box and picking out the inside of the far post with a well-placed left-footed blast. The Red Stars were fortunate not to concede another goal when Sinclair subsequently found Comeau unmarked inside the penalty area and the midfielder send a mishit effort well over the frame. The visitors got even closer to the go-ahead tally in the 74th minute, substitute Kendall Johnson feeding Sinead Farrell, whose excellent chipped attempt bounced off the underside off the crossbar and came within inches of crossing the line. Chicago defender and New Zealand captain Abby Erceg had the game’s final quality chance when she beat several defenders to ball on DiBernardo free-kick from midfield, only to see the dangerous header parried by Angerer. The Chicago Red Stars look to stay undefeated on the season when they host American legend Christie Rampone and Sky Blue FC on Saturday, May 2. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

Chicago, Illinois – National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Chicago Red Stars drew 2-2 in a spirited affair with mighty Portland Thorns FC on Saturday night. Reigning NWSL Player of the Week Christen Press had her second straight twogoal performance to open the 2015 season, but Thorns FC clawed its way back into the game and earned a point courtesy of goals from Christine Sinclair and Mana Shim before halftime. In the early stages of the clash with Portland, Chicago continued right where it had left off in the dramatic 3-2 victory over Seattle the previous week. A mere four minutes into the match, Press took down an excellent long ball by captain Lori Chalupny and cut to her right, followed by a beautiful curler that left outstretched German international goalkeeper Nadine Angerer without a chance. U.S. Women’s National Team star Press was at it again just four minutes later, receiving the ball from midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo and exploding past her marker on the left side of the penalty area. The 26-year-old fired at goal from a tight angle and was delighted to see her attempt deflect off defender Courtney Niemiec and underneath Angerer for the day’s second strike. Portland nearly pulled one back moments later, as Tobin Heath worked her way to the by-line on the right and sent a dangerous cross toward the far past, only to see Red Stars netminder Karina LeBlanc produce a stunning kick-save to deny the unmarked Shim. The rebound fell straight Thorns FC debutant Taylor Comeau, whose effort ricocheted off a defender before being headed off the line by well-positioned Chicago defender Julie Johnston. The Red Stars nearly found the net at the other end in the 15th minute, rookie Danielle Colaprico swinging in a corner kick from the left that was nodded just over the frame by legendary U.S. midfielder Shannon Boxx. Three minutes later, Press thought she had a hat trick when she

AMAZING ARBORETUM ESTATES

CHICAGO, April 23, 2015 – When Linda Feinstein changed the affiliation of her successful real estate brokerage in Hinsdale, Ill., from ERA to the RE/MAX Northern Illinois network in October of last year, she brought along 40 affiliated brokers and established RE/MAX Signature Homes. Feinstein was honored at the annual RE/MAX convention in March, held this year in Las Vegas, for completing the 2014 conversion of a single office that brought the largest number of agents into the RE/MAX network in the United States. In 2014, RE/ MAX welcomed 36 existing real estate brokerages and their 256 Linda Feinstein affiliated agents into its U.S. network. RE/MAX added a total of 253 franchises in the U.S. last year. “The Hinsdale area is one of the premier housing markets in the Chicago suburbs, so adding such an outstanding office and talented group of brokers has been a huge positive for our network,” said Jim Merrion, regional director of RE/MAX Northern Illinois. GLEN ELLYN – Things looked good for Glenbard South when Taylor Ray scored in the fourth minute Monday night to give the Raiders an early lead against visiting Riverside Brookfield. That changed when Ray left the game with a knee injury with 15 minutes left in the first half. The loss of their leading scorer crippled the Raiders’ offense and RB rallied to win the key Metro Suburban West game 2-1. Freshman Allie Kucera scored both goals for the Bulldogs (6-4, 2-1), including the game-winner with 3:08 remaining in the second half off a cross from Fiona Larson. “I’d have to see tape of [that] goal,” Glenbard South coach Glen Eggert said. “We’re playing more cleanly at the back. They’re beginning to figure out [how to] work off each other, but whenever there’s a goal scored there is usually some sort of breakdown.” RB senior Ashley Ferguson forced the breakdown by sending a long lead pass into the right side of the box to Larson, who took a moment to settle the ball before sending it in front to the on-rushing Kucera, whose short shot beat Raiders goalie Jacquelyn Wescott to the far post. “They did a good job in attacking,” Eggert said. “They had a couple players who could combine dangerously, as well as their one striker [Kucera] who was pretty powerful. We’re small and have to really work together, so I would give props to our backs for keeping it together as long and as well as they did.” Ray was unable to return to action. Eggert, whose team had won five of its previous six games, is hoping the injury is minor because while the Raiders (5-5-1, 4-1) created their fair share of chances, they were unable to get quality shots off once they got the ball into the Bulldogs’ box. “She is a very dangerous player and even when she’s not scoring she’s creating opportunities for the rest of us just by the threat that she presents,” Eggert said. “So it was hard for us. Had she not been injured it would have been very interesting the second half because we started to really press and get a lot of balls in behind, but we just weren’t able to close the deal in the final third.” Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com The Raiders return to the field at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at Elmwood Park. Glenbard South forward Taylor Ray fights for possession of the ball Monday during a conference game against Riverside Brookfield.

Despite strong pitching, Hilltoppers fall to OPRF By SCOTT SCHMID

Glenbard West’s Bridget McGregor makes contact with the ball Monday during the Hilltoppers’ game at Downers Grove North.

Potter’s effort not enough as Glenbard West falls to DGN SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – Caylin Potter’s complete game gave the Hilltoppers a chance to win, but the Glenbard West offense couldn’t break through Monday against Downers Grove North. Potter ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss despite allowing only two runs on eight hits while striking out five batters in six innings of work. “She threw an excellent game,” Glenbard West head coach Mary McGrane said of her starting pitcher. “She hit her spots and pitched her way out of a couple tough jams. Caylin is a fierce competitor for us. Her competitiveness rubs off on her teammates and I think they feed off of that. Hilltoppers opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single by Amanda Posegay. It didn’t take long for DGN to respond, as they tied

the game a half inning later on a double steal with runners on the corners. Downers Grove North took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI sacrifice fly. Still, the Hilltoppers’ head coach liked the way her team competed following a string of rough losses. “Overall, I was pleased with how we played today,” McGrane said. “I thought we showed up ready to play today, competed in every inning and I thought our effort was much better than what he showed last weekend.” The Hilltoppers had dropped a 15-0 decision to Hinsdale Central on April 24. Katherine Porter, Katie Stone and Amanda Posegay had the teams only hits. On April 22, Glenbard West fell 9-3 to York. Caylin Potter went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Rachel Terwilliger had a pair of RBIs. Potter also pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs.

GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard West’s young pitching staff more than held its own during the first two games against West Suburban Silver conference leader Oak Park. Unfortunately for the Hilltoppers, the team’s offense and defense didn’t have the same success. Held without a run over 14 innings, the squad lost 6-0 to the Huskies on April 24 and then dropped a 3-0 decision Monday. Justin O’Neal allowed two earned runs and five hits in five innings in the opener before Zach Lutz held Oak Park to one earned run in four frames in the second game. Defensively, the team made a combined seven errors in the two contests while the Huskies committed none. “That’s their job and what we tell them,” Glenbard West coach Andy Schultz said. “It’s unrealistic to expect shutouts every day. Just throw enough strikes to keep us in games. “Oak Park is a good team, and in the first two games we had opportunities to win. Offensively, we just didn’t do enough and we made a couple of mistakes defensively and Oak Park was flawless on defense.” Arno Curtis came on in relief of Lutz on Monday and threw three frames, allowing no earned runs while

striking out three. “Arno came in and threw very well,” Schultz said. “That’s the best he has thrown. And those are the kind of experiences that are good for Zach [Lutz]. He did a good job working out of some situations.” Only in the third inning did Glenbard West have two runners reach base. Will Simoneit also had a double in the first while Billy Becker led off the seventh with a single. “Offensively, we certainly need to be better,” Schultz said. “But in the long term, what will hurt us the most is free runs.” On April 23, Glenbard West defeated Proviso East 10-0 in five innings as Ryan Coleman allowed just one hit while striking out five. Jack Tecson went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI and O’Neal was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Simoneit added a pair of hits and an RBI and Matt Shoub cranked out a triple. “Ryan threw very well,” Schultz said. “He threw all five innings and he threw 56 pitches, 46 of which were strikes.” The Hilltoppers, who play a crossover game against Addison Trail today, open a three-game series with York on May 1. “They swept us last year,” Schultz said. “Hopefully our guys have a little bit of a revenge mindset and we go out there and play really well.”

BOYS VOLLEYBALL Glenbard West

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Behind a strong pitching performance from Dylan Brambora, the Glenbard South baseball team defeated St. Edward 10-3 on Monday. Brambora allowed four hits in six innings, striking out five. The offense provided him with three runs in the first inning and then put the game away with five runs in the fourth. Michael Ashe went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Andrew Wrona totaled two hits and two runs scored. Brian Ashe, Tim Marks and Robbie McGimpsey drove in two runs apiece. On April 23, Glenbard South (12-5) knocked off Timothy Christian 11-2. Michael Ashe was 2 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs while Robbie McGimpsey went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Joey Atkinson also had two hits. That run support was more than enough for Fabian Garcia, who al-

lowed one earned run while striking out three in a complete-game effort.

Glenbard South softball The Raiders notched a 9-0 victory against Wheaton North on April 23. Ashley Cohen went 2 for 4 at the plate with a homer and two RBIs and also tossed a complete-game shutout. Mina Marra also hit a home run. On April 22, Glenbard South (11-4) defeated IC Catholic Prep 12-4 as the Raiders produced 14 hits. The top four hitters in the lineup – Payton Carli, Tricia Weigand, Ashley Cohen and Taylor Carli – went a combined 9 for 17 with seven RBIs and eight runs scored. Reilee Flanagan also went 2 for 3. Taylor Carli also pitched five innings, striking out eight. A day earlier, the Raiders beat Fenton 11-1 in six innings. Taylor Carli drove in three runs and Mady Carli was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Taylor Carli threw all six innings, striking out 11 while allowing two hits.
