To finally stop the waste, fraud and abuse. thing new. “The voters have spoken,” he said. “They had a choice. Although they had 12 candidates to choose from, they really only had two choices: They had a choice for reform or they had a choice for the status quo. They chose reform with all three positions they elected tonight.” Napolitano said one of the first tasks the slate will address is the need for a requested audit of state money spent at the school, which the college’s board has yet to take action on funding. “I definitely think that we need to work to approve the state audit,” he said. “I think we need to cooperate with all the investigations going on right now.”

The election was one of the most controversial in the school’s history, as the board has recently received criticism for approving a $763,000 buyout for Breuder and hiring a $250 per hour public relations firm for communications counsel. Bernstein underscored the vision of the slate at a previous forum. “Our vision is to provide our students with the skills and education to be competitive in a 21st century economy,” he said. “In order to do that, we have to stop the corruption, integrate the faculty and pay a good compensation to attract the best faculty.” Neither Mazzochi nor Bernstein responded to requests for comment on election night.

Park District incumbents Cornell, Ladesic leads in close trustee race; Mayo hold seats, Wilson joins slate Kenwood and Senak take seats By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Two incumbent Glen Ellyn Park District commissioners will return for another four years, this time alongside their slate member, according to preliminary numbers from the DuPage County Election Commission. Kathy Cornell and Gary Mayo both will be back for a second term Kathy after the April 7 election, Cornell while Chris Wilson will fill the seat left by Richard Dunn, who is moving out of Glen Ellyn. Cornell led the candidates with 24.5 percent of the votes. Mayo and Wilson squeaked into second and third place with 19.8 percent and 19.2 percent each. Alfred D’Ambrosio came in only 66 votes behind Mayo and 53 behind Wilson and Walt Zlotow came in fifth, getting 15.9 percent of the vote.

The victorious slate ran on a platform stressing “experience and vision.” “We went into this evening really not knowing what to expect,” she said. “Four years ago, Gary Mayo we felt very strongly that the Park District board needed to take a new direction. ... And we had some very specific things that we wanted to do and we did those things.” C o r n e l l s a i d t h e Chris Wilson board would have to continue to maintain the quality of its existing parks and trails and offer opportunities to all members of the Glen Ellyn community, not just those with children. “In most communities, but

By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Of the three candidates who won seats on the Glen Ellyn Village Board in a tight race in the April 7 election, one is about to serve his third consecutive term. Incumbent Pete Ladesic led in the results, with about 27 percent of the vote, according to preliminary results from the DuPage County Election Commission. John Kenwood Pete followed with about 26 Ladesic percent and Mark Senak came in third with about 24 percent. Carol Fontana followed the three, with only five fewer votes than Senak. Newcomers Kenwood, Senak and Fontana entered the election with the support of the village’s Civic Betterment Party.

Ladesic, however, ran as an independent after losing the party’s support in a nomination election in December. “I’m going to continue doing what I’ve al- John ways done. We need to Kenwood continue making sure we are spending every dollar wisely,” he said. “One of the things that’s wrong with government as a whole is governement spends money like it’s their Mark Senak own.” Ladesic also discussed the need for the board to find revenue sources. “We have to look at alternate revenue streams, “ he said. “How do we generate revenue without taxing our residents? DeLaRosa, a business analyst, said the rollback of state income taxes and the potential pension cost shift are two things the board will have to keep an eye on. She also felt there is an over-emphasis on Advanced Placement courses and hopes the district doesn’t add classes just for its own sake. Martha Mueller, a school bus driver, has said she is the best candidate because she can hear what is going on in the district. She has also said she will only make decisions when she’s well-versed on issues and has done thorough research. Mueller said previously two of the biggest issues facing the district are possible state budget cuts and making sure the district conducts its technology spending wisely. She has suggested creating community and business partnerships to help provide for students and make a difference in funding.

I wish to thank the many generous neighbors whose donations have made it possible for us to open this second location COMMUNITY for providing food, clothing, educational programs and VOICE much more for DuPage Kim residents who are struggling Perez with poverty. We continue to seek donations to support the new center, visit www.peoplesrc.org/homeforgood if you’d like to help. Since 1975, we’ve been bringing neighbors together to respond to hunger and poverty in DuPage County. That first year, 40 volunteers started People’s Resource Center in the basement of a small house. They organized their friends and family to donate bags of groceries and fed 125 hungry families. Last year, more than 2,000 volunteers served in PRC’s two centers in Wheaton and Westmont as well as more than 30 community partner locations across DuPage County. We distributed more than 2.6 million pounds of food. We provided more than 25,500 hours of educational opportunities that empower people to find work and develop the skills needed to achieve self-sufficiency. We helped more than 9,000 families. All the while, we’ve remained grounded in grassroots community support. PRC’s founders envisioned doing so much more for the community than just sharing food with the hungry, as important as that is. They wanted to help people overcome the isolating experience of being poor in the suburbs. They sought to build a community that could transcend the socioeconomic differences that so often divide us. During 40 years of People’s Resource Center history, that vision has become a reality. We are so grateful for the generous neighbors whose donations and volunteer work make it all possible. Every day, people from all walks of life are finding new hope and opportunity. Check out www.peoplesrc. org/homeforgood to find information about tours – I welcome you to come visit our new building in Westmont and see for yourself.

To hear state Sens. Michael Connelly and Chris Nybo describe it, there’s a new mood in Springfield. Connelly and Nybo, who between them represent most of DuPage County in the Illinois Legislature, stopped by the Suburban Life newsroom the other day to chat about what’s going on in Springfield and their priorities for the immediate future. One of the things that stood out during the discussion was their assertion that there’s an entirely new atmosphere at the state capitol. To some degree that’s to be expected whenever there’s a change in the governor’s office – was anyone sorry to see Rod Blagojevich depart, regardless of who replaced him? – but what Connelly and Nybo described was an environment where true bipartisanship has a chance to thrive. Imagine that, in Springfield of all places. Connelly and Nybo described how Gov. Bruce Rauner has made it a habit to share meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner – with legislators of both parties, on a regular basis. Connelly mentioned he has access to the governor via text message (one imagines that’s a privilege that would be quickly revoked if it was abused) and said that’s common now, and a far cry from his previous lack of access. You don’t have to think back very far to remember dissension not only between

the parties, but within the parties in Springfield. Conflict between then-Gov. Pat Quinn and House Speaker Michael Madigan led to the watered-down pension reform law that seems likely to meet its demise in the courts. With Republicans reduced to a superminority and needing only Democratic votes to pass legislation and a Democratic governor in office, it was still excruciatingly difficult for meaningful bills to get passed. A cynic might see Rauner’s overtures and dismiss it as mere window-dressing designed to elicit responses like this very editorial. But that would be a great length to go to just to fool some newspaper editors. Plus, the recent bipartisan effort to close a $1.6 billion gap in the 2015 budget, keeping state services and programs from shutting down, certainly showed a willingness of the two parties to work together, no matter how you feel about the deal itself. It’s no surprise Connelly and Nybo, both Republicans, feel a sense of optimism now that their party controls one of the branches of state government. But the available evidence, so far, seems to support their assertion that there really is a difference in the way things are being done now. We can only hope this will continue, with the 2016 budget on the horizon and a likely need for another stab at pension reform. From here, the issues only get more difficult to tackle.

T-shirt to stop harassment I suggest the U.S. government issue a T-shirt to everyone in our country reading as follows: “Stop Police Harassment Now ... by NOT COMMITTING CRIMES!!!” This should stop harassment immediately.

Full-day kindergarten conundrum What’s all this talk of late about full-day kindergarten all over the place? Kindergarten was never meant to be a full day. It was supposed to be an introduction to schooling for the young child. A full day is too long for the young child. What’s going to happen is the children are going to learn to hate school because they’re there too long. It seems to be that the backers of full-day kindergarten are the parents who want to work instead of being home with their children. My theory is that if you cannot afford to spend time at home with your children and just have one parent working, then maybe you shouldn’t be having children.

Who is watching out for students, faculty and staff at the College of DuPage? Kathy Hamilton appears to be the only board member that cares! Now we have yet another scandal. It appears as though the Foundation Board that is supposed to be raising private funding for the college is only raising the funding for their own pockets. … Talk about a conflict of interest! This is all from the president on down to the radio station and the board members – power gone bad!

I’m not surprised with the recent onslaught of negative stories at COD. Many times as a manufacturing employer, I participated in COD Technical Center Job Fairs, Career Fairs and I walked the halls of the professors sharing my job descriptions for excellent entry level technical positions starting at more than $18 per hour. I told the professors to give me their top 10 students and they would have a job offer within a week. After numerous attempts on my part, not once did I ever receive a resume or a response from a professor. … COD has a wonderful Tech Center, but I thought the purpose of these centers was to find students jobs after they receive the skills.

Glen Ellyn, Ill. –March 24, 2015 – The Wheaton Chamber of Commerce recently hosted an awards event to acknowledge Wheaton’s most outstanding local business members. This year’s winner in the Home Services of the Year category was Baird & Warner’s Caitlin Spencer. This award was earned through public and chamber members nominations. Over 19,000 votes were cast to determine the winner in each category. “It is such an honor to be recognized by the community, my Caitlin Spencer peers from the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce and Baird & Warner,” said Spencer. “I love Wheaton and I love selling real estate. Thank you to my clients and supporters.” No stranger to awards, Baird & Warner recently named Spencer “Rookie of the Year” based on her incredible sales performance in 2014.

CHICAGO, April 2, 2015 – RE/MAX broker associate Roz Iaccino of RE/MAX Suburban, 441 Taft Ave., Glen Ellyn, Ill., was honored recently by the RE/MAX Northern Illinois real estate network with its Rising Star, Large Market Award. The Rising Star Award is given each year to RE/MAX broker associates who have held a real estate license for less than 18 months and whose productivity during the past year was clearly exceptional for a newcomer to the industry. Only the most talented and successful new agents take home this award. Roz Iaccino Iaccino’s award tabs her as the leading new RE/MAX agent in the metro Chicago real estate market. Her move into real estate was a substantial but entirely logical career shift that Iaccino made in 2013. The Wheaton resident had long been involved in the construction trades as both an electrican and mason before deciding to join her mother, an established RE/MAX broker, in real estate sales. “It has been a wonderful change,” said Iaccino. “I love my job and the people I work with. Plus, it allows me to use my knowledge of construction in many ways to help both buyers and sellers.”

Francesca’s Amici makes name for itself

Francesca’s Amici in downtown Elmhurst, a destination for rustic Italian favorites, has sister restaurants in the suburbs such as La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville. My dining companion couldn’t resist the fish either, and helped polish off the generous serving. With thoughts still lured by dessert, half the pizza became takeout for lunch the next day. And then the dessert list arrived. We were torn between such choices as flourless chocolate cake and gelato, but went with the server’s recommendation: mascarpone

cheesecake with passion-fruit glaze, perched on a polenta shortbread cookie. Pretty as a picture, it arrived on a plate drizzled with creme anglaise and topped with a raspberry nestled in a mint leaf. It paired well with a frothy cappuccino. It was a sweet finish to our night out. And the romantic setting, complete with a great musical soundtrack, remained conducive to conversation, no mean feat in a popular restaurant. As we took Italian candies

ELMHURST – In the mood to let seasoned pros do the cooking, we decided to make our first visit to Francesca’s Amici. It inhabits a warm, sophisticated space in downtown Elmhurst near the York Theatre. The spot is part of the regional collection of Francesca’s Italian restaurants, each with its own name. Among other suburban locations are La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville. Guiding us in from the dark, a glowing sign reading Amici (Italian for friends) crowns the inviting bar area off the entrance. The dining room is stylish with sleek booths and banquettes, and an artistic array of sepia photographs of people and places in Italy, capped with an undulating ceiling of curving beams set off by rolled copper mesh giving off a subtle sheen. Our server made us feel instantly welcome, and we soon had a small plate of freshly grated Parmesan to accompany a carafe of herbed olive oil for dipping our bread. An appetizer of scallops (capesante) in a bed of tomato risotto hit spicy notes to complement the creamy texture of the shellfish. Vowing to leave room for dessert, my dining companion selected a pizza with sausage, mushroom and his go-to spinach. He’d never been satisfied with the standard portion of spinach, until this pizza arrived, transformed from 2-D to 3-D by a tower of wonderfully prepared greens atop the pie. “I’m in awe,” he said at first sight. The fresh spinach tasted lightly sauteed with garlic, and he kindly shared a portion with me as an added side dish for my seafood plate. I ordered the tilapia paesana, expecting the thin fish I’ve encountered at the market. Instead, a plump, wonderfully moist fillet appeared, delicately breaded and smothered with a colorful melange of shredded

Raiders look to defend Metro Suburban title Youth will need to help propel Glenbard South team By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Coming off a 25-win campaign a year ago, Glenbard South will have a little bit of a different look this spring. But despite having a more youthful presence, with three freshman in the starting lineup, the Raiders have the pieces in place for another successful season. “This group is eager, they

With that said, we have to be perfect in the things we can control, which is fundamentals.” The squad does return a core of players, including senior pitcher and first baseman Taylor Carli and junior outfielder Payton Carli. Mady Carli knocked in a pair of runs and Tricia Weigand was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. “I felt pleasantly confident [after the first two games],” Fonda said. “They executed, they put the ball in play, Taylor did a great job pitching. It was fun to watch them get out there and play.” The Raiders also began Metro Suburban conference play with a victory against Chicago Christian on Monday.

Glenbard West volleyball rallies after slow start By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – A nearly two-week break from game action coupled with the excitement of the West Suburban Silver opener might have been the cause of Glenbard West’s initial struggles Tuesday. But once the Hilltoppers got over those early jitters, they quickly showed why they are one of the best volleyball teams in the state. Receiving 10 kills and four blocks from Kyler Kotsakis and 23 assists and nine service points from Paulie Bischoff, Glenbard West defeated York 25-16, 25-15. “I’m real proud of them,” Glenbard West coach Christine Giunta-Mayer said. “It was our first conference game and it was a home game and we don’t play many home games. I think there was a little too much excitement. But then they got rolling.” The visiting Dukes were within 12-10 in the opening game before the Hilltoppers scored 13 of the next 19 points. Kotsakis had three kills and an ace during that run and Will Church contributed two kills and two blocks. Likewise in game two, Glenbard West led 11-10 before quickly pulling away, with Parker Swartz tallying three kills and two blocks. “Our middles are playing so well, our wings are playing well,” said Guinta-Mayer, whose team improved to 3-0 on the young season. “And whoever goes in is getting it done. They work so hard in practice and they definitely communicate with each other. That’s our goal, to never let the ball hit the

floor because we aren’t talking.” Up next for the Hilltoppers is the Springfest tournament at Glenbard East high school this weekend and that will provide plenty of stiff challenges. A year ago, they won that event for the first time in program history. “Glenbard East is outstanding, Benet and Downers Grove South are there and so is Neuqua Valley and St. Francis,” the coach said. “It’s loaded and you know what, all of those teams are in our

sectional. It’s a great tournament.” Glenbard West will no doubt head into the tourney with a bullseye on its back as some rankings have the Hilltoppers in the No. 1 spot. But Guinta-Mayer and her team aren’t willing to accept that yet. “We have decided as a group that we don’t deserve that ranking,” she said. “It is off last year. What we have done [this year] to earn that? If we want to be the best, we have to beat the best.”

SOFTBALL PREVIEW

Upstart Hilltoppers ready for tough conference schedule By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – With only a couple of returning starters, the 2015 Glenbard West softball team will feature plenty of fresh faces. But head coach Mary McGrane is excited about the possibilities of this group. “This year’s group is an exciting one for me as a coach,” McGrane said. “The players show up everyday ready and willing to work. Every player on the team is coachable and is eager to win.” The Hilltoppers do bring back a pair of stalwarts in seniors Rachel Terwilliger and Shelley Warmolts. Terwilliger, a shortstop, is headed to Grand Valley State while Warmolts, a catcher,

will continue her career at Denison. Both hit better than .300 last spring. Senior Caylin Potter, who was the No. 2 pitcher a year ago behind varsity mainstay Taylor Langtry, inherits the staff ace role while freshman Isabel Hermanson also will see innings inside the pitching circle.

“We are young in terms of varsity experience,” McGrane said. “But I think we have the potential to score a lot of runs when we are aggressive at the plate. Caylin will handle the majority of the innings this spring and Isabel will see some innings as well. Caylin is a fierce competitor and is a great role model for someone like Isabel on the mound. “Defensively, I have six open positions and the girls will get a chance to earn their position before conference starts.” The Hilltoppers are coming off a third-place finish in the West Suburban Silver conference after posting a mark of 8-4. “Oak Park and York are two tough

conference opponents along with DGN, LT and Hinsdale Central,” the coach said. “I think it is fair to say we have the potential to competitive in our conference. We play a tough non-conference schedule to help prepare us for our conference and postseason play.” Glenbard West, which picked up a nonconference win over Addison Trail, has games against West Chicago and Elk Grove today and tomorrow. “So far I have been pleased with the girls work ethic,” McGrane said. “The girls are eager to win and eager to get better. I stress the importance of paying attention to detail and focusing on what we can control along the journey and the end result will take care of itself.”

Glenbard South held to two hits in loss to RB during conference play SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Behind an outstanding pitching performance by Justin O’Neal, the Glenbard West baseball team defeated Hinsdale South 4-1 April 6. O’Neal went the distance on the mound for the Hilltoppers, yielding just four hits and a walk while striking out five. Offensively, Glenbard West scored a pair of runs in both the first and third innings. RJ Paul was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Matt Porter and Zach Lutz each had two hits. The Hilltoppers concluded their trip to Louisville, Ky., on April 1 with an 8-1 loss to Eastern. A day earlier, the squad fell 11-4 to Ballard despite a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with three RBIs from Will Simoneit.

Glenbard South The Raiders opened up Metro Suburban conference play with a 7-2 loss to Riverside-Brookfield on Monday. They were held to two hits as

Glenbard West gymnastics squad rings in new season By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – After finishing fourth in the state a year ago, the Glenbard West boys gymnastics team said goodbye to nine graduated seniors. The Hilltoppers were dealt another blow when Max Diab, who came in seventh in the all-around competition as a freshman, elected not to return. But with a large number of gymnasts in the program, the squad still has the ingredients for a successful campaign and their early results have proven that. “It’s kind of a rebuilding year, but we have so many kids,” Glenbard West coach

Frank Novakowski said. “We have 70 kids in the program, and with the way the new rules work, that is an advantage for our program. We have a lot of kids who we can plug into a lot of different events.

“And even though we are real young, with Adam [Samuta] the only senior on the varsity, it’s a talented group and they are really hard workers. Hard work is the key and they understand that.”

Glenbard West won its first two West Suburban Silver dual meets, defeating Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central, while placing first in the District 87 invite and the Vic Avigliano invite at Rolling Meadows High School that featured 19 teams. “They’ve done a great job,” Novakowski said. “They’ve been very consistent. There is no substitute for a group that works hard. They practiced every day over Spring Break and practiced before the Rolling Meadows invite. I’m very happy and now we are starting the second half of the season. Hopefully we continue to get better.” The Hilltoppers have posted a high score of 136.30 in a year where there doesn’t

seem to be a lot of dominant teams. “It’s hard to get a good read so far,” the coach said. “A lot of scores have been fluctuating. Wheaton [Coop] has gone 148 but when we were in the same gym [on March 7], we only lost by one point. I think it’s definitely kind of closer than it has been in a lot of years and it will be exciting to see who ends up making it.” For Glenbard West to be one of the teams that makes it to state, Novakowski said one thing is the key. “The main thing is to do what Glenbard West normally does,” he said. “And that is hit routines. That has always been our focus. And then in some areas, we are working on raising our start values.”

the visitors scored five runs in the final three frames to grab the win. Michael Ashe had a double and RBI and Kyle Carli also drove in a run with a hit. Glenbard South had wrapped up its trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. with a 3-2 victory against Victor Central on April 2 in 10 innings. Brian Ashe drove in the winning run after the opposition had knotted up the score with two runs in the sixth. Fabian Garcia struck out 10 batters and allowed four hits in eight frames before Brian Ashe came on in relief and struck out three in two scoreless innings. Alex McGimpsey, Michael Ashe and Tim Marks all had two hits. On March 31, the team defeated Jefferson Area 11-0 in five innings as Joey Atkinson, Michael Ashe, Andrew Wrona and Carli each had two hits. Atkinson, Michael Ashe, Carli and Brian Ashe had two RBIs apiece. McGimpsey started on the mound and struck out five in four innings.
