GLEN ELLYN – Glen Ellyn School District 41 Superintendent Paul Gordon will soon receive an 8 percent raise and an additional $10,000 performance bonus. The superintendent’s new base salary of $216,918 will take effect July 1. The amount is $21,918 more than the $195,000 initial base salary he received when he was hired by the district in 2013. The Board of Education, which approved the measure as part of the consent agenda at its April 27 meeting, granted Gordon a 3 percent merit increase and a 5 percent increase to align his salary with surrounding districts. Glen Ellyn resident Jeff Cooper took issue with the raise at the board’s May 4 meeting. He said the board lacked transparency when it placed the pay hike on the consent agenda, which typically consists of a list of routine items to be approved by a single vote, and didn’t open it to public discussion. “I don’t see how you guys can go ahead and give a 5 percent increase and on top of that a 3 percent increase to go ahead and put it in line – what I was told – with other superintendents in the area,” he said. “Where

By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com is the transparency? There wasn’t any.” According to former board president John Kenwood, whose last meeting was May 4, salary increases are normally only discussed during closed session meetings before being placed on the consent agenda. “My understanding is in the past it’s always been on the consent agenda. It’s never been anything different,” he said. Kenwood said Gordon’s raise was considered in closed session meetings, including a Saturday meeting, scheduled so all board members could attend. “My major point is the board discussed [their position] with moving forward in terms of salary and bonus and all that,” Kenwood said. “This was the consensus of the board and the board’s vote is an indication of the level of confidence in the performance of the superintendent.”

GLEN ELLYN – The Glen Ellyn School District 41 Board of Education has agreed to allow new members Stephanie Clark and Kurt Buchholz access to recordings of closed session meetings. After a lengthy discussion Monday, during which the newcomers questioned why they needed permission to listen to the audio while veteran members expressed a desire to protect board confidentiality, a consensus was made. Four board members – Patrick Escalante, Dean Elger, Erica Nelson and Drew Ellis – agreed to allow the access. Board member Joe Bochenski abstained, citing lack of research on board policy and procedure. Community members largely supported allowing Clark and Buchholz access to the recordings. “Any contention that a board may deny trustees specific information that is available to other trustees is entirely incorrect,” Glen Ellyn resident Randolph Sailer said. “Those are inherent rights and duties of a trustee. If they believe they need information, they are entitled to it.” Other community members noted regulations posted on the district website stating board members may listen to “verbatim recordings when that action is germane to their responsibilities.” District resident Sarah Michael said, having spoken to a lawyer, it is “illegal” for the board to keep new members from listening to the audio. Overall, the audience said the board must be transparent and new members should have access to sought information. “They have these rights. We as a public expect these rights to be enforced,” district parent Bruce Currie said. The new members sought audio on Superintendent Paul Gordon’s recent raise, which hiked his salary to $216,918 when he was awarded a 3 percent merit increase and a 5 percent increase to align with surrounding districts April 27. The two newcomers, who said they spoke with various attorneys, argued there was no basis for denying them

Disquieting thriller to open at Village Theatre Guild By RENEE TOMELL rtomell@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – A contemporary thriller staged by Village Theatre Guild is designed to spark debate long after the curtain falls. Playwright Rebecca Gilman imparts a sinister meaning to the title, “Boy Gets Girl.” The story begins when Theresa Bedell, an accomplished New York reporter, meets Tony on a blind date. He’s attractive and funny, but Theresa grows convinced they have nothing in common and, after a second date, politely tries to break it off. What at first appears to be persistence on Tony’s part is revealed to be an obsession that threatens Theresa and the people around her. The play ratchets up the psychological tension and is suitable for mature audiences, said Clarissa Yearman, who stars as Theresa. Yearman is an adjunct theater professor at the College of DuPage, where she teaches acting and improv.

Carl Zeitler (Tony) and Clarissa Yearman (Theresa) rehearse their blind date in “Boy Gets Girl,” presented by Village Theatre Guild. “I’d read the play before; it really spoke to me,” Yearman said, noting that Tony at first glance appears normal. “But we find out he’s a horrible monster [and] she’s not his first victim.” Yearman found herself drawn to the complex personality of Theresa and the opportunity to create strong relationships on stage between Theresa and the other characters. She said one of her early instructors taught her that building believable

POLICE REPORTS
Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Vertigo & Balance Q: What exactly is BPPV? A: here are diferent types of balance disorders. Some sufer with Meniere’s disease, others with vestibular neuritis and others with BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), which is one of the most common Dr. Terri Lightbody balance disorders in (630) 580-5777 older adults. BPPV is characterized by a strong sense of vertigo or a spinning sensation with head movements. he vestibular system or organ of balance is very complex and exists within the temporal bone on either side of the head. he membranous labyrinth within the vestibular system consists of three luid illed tubes (semi circular canals) and two swollen chambers, the utricle and saccule. here is a small dense area of nerve ibers called the macule located in each of the saccule and utricle. Each macule is covered by a membrane that is like jelly and then covered by a blanket of otoconia. he otoconia are tiny crystals of calcium carbonate. hese crystals
transmit information to the brain stem and cerebellum about body movement and orientation. In BPPV, the otoconia has become displaced due to age, injury or infection. It can shit to diferent areas of the membranous labyrinth. his displacement of the otoconia causes mixed signals to the brain which in turn caused dizziness or vertigo. Because dizziness can be related to a number of both benign and serious conditions, a complete medical history and hearing evaluation is important. Treatment for dizziness is varied led by the cause and type of the balance disorder. he goal of treatment should be to decrease or eliminate dizziness which in turn can increase safety, function, and mobility. Some treatment options include physical therapy to reposition the displaced otoconia, medication, occupational therapy, and at times surgery. he ability to move about safely is important as we age. It is a quality of life factor. If you are experiencing balance problems, consult with your Doctor of Audiology.

Here we go again! As we all know, there are many festivals in the Chicago area that revolve around food and are aptly named the “Taste of ...” But if you want to head to the original Taste, the Taste that precedes all other Tastes – even the Taste of Chicago – you need to come to Glen Ellyn. That’s right, Glen Ellyn hosted the very first Taste 38 years ago. And the Glen Ellyn Chamber will again host the Taste of Glen Ellyn this year Thursday through Sunday right in the heart of the downtown on Main Street. We were the first festival that started the whole string of festivals that you see going on in every community.

Keep accountability and transparency As state government scurries to fill a projected $8 billion deficit in the 2016 fiscal year budget, it would seem to make sense to accept successful compromises and proven solutions already in place and instead focus on issues that truly have a significant impact on the state’s finances. One successful compromise and proven solution that now is in its fifth year of operation is the website www.publicnoticeillinois.com. PNI is a centralized, aggregated website for all public notices from the state of Illinois, units of local government and the Illinois court system. It’s a free-access website that is updated daily. For more than 200 VIEWS years, newspapers have been Dennis paid to print public notices Derossett – or legal notices as they are often referred to – and to serve as the critically important, independent, third party between units of local government and taxpayers, and have functioned as the official notification system of our court system. PNI was created by state law in 2011 and was approved unanimously by both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly. It requires newspapers to upload all notices to PNI after the notices appear in print. All of this is done at no additional cost to government. No taxpayer money goes toward supporting or managing the public notice website. With each new session of the Illinois General Assembly, local government lobbyists – whose paychecks are funded largely by your tax dollars – repeatedly push bills to eliminate public notices or remove them from newspapers and PNI in favor of their own individual websites. These bills rarely make it out of committee because, frankly, state lawmakers understand that forcing citizens to attempt to locate notices across thousands of websites doesn’t make sense. Local government groups are now using behind-the-scenes tactics to remove public notices from print and from PNI and, instead, have the notices placed on their individual websites. But, this time they have a new twist: They are claiming that having to be accountable and transparent through the current public notice process is an “unfunded mandate,” and they want to do away with it. The simple fact is that, for them, this issue is not about money; it’s about reducing transparency and accountability to the taxpayers. Local government officials should focus on the big-impact issues, allow the proven public notice solution in our state to keep on working and not spend so much time and taxpayer dollars on how to be less accountable and less transparent.

OUR VIEW
Consolidation efforts a great step forward In the aftermath of the Illinois Supreme Court’s expected decision to strike down the 2013 pension reform law, the state now finds itself in an even bigger fiscal hole than the one it already faced. There’s no telling how our officials will proceed. Whether the governor and Legislature opt for raising taxes, reducing services or putting off the problem, or some combination of those options, there’s clearly going to be less money around to do the important things that government needs to do. Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti’s task force, which looks at consolidation and unfunded mandates, now is more relevant than when it was created. The state and DuPage County can’t afford to tolerate the waste that comes from duplicated services and the overhead created by duplicated bureaucracies. Chances are, everyone’s heard this by now, but it needs to be repeated anyway: Illinois has far more units of government than any other state in the U.S., with almost 7,000. No other state even has 5,000. That’s right – we could eliminate 2,000 governmental entities in Illinois (almost 30 percent of the state’s total) and still lead the nation. Sanguinetti, a former Wheaton City Council member well versed in the mishmash of agencies that lord over DuPage County, stopped by West Chicago recently to talk about her task force’s effort. “This is not the first study of its kind when it comes to units of government,” she told a gathering of the League of Women Voters of Wheaton. “Prior administrations have conducted these studies, and then nothing happens with them.”
Suburban Life Media Editorial Board Laura Burke, Dave Lemery, Matt Hendrickson, Anna Schier, Alex Soulier, Mary Beth Versaci
But the push for consolidation in DuPage already has begun, and there’s cause for optimism that it might have some teeth this time. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin has talked about dissolving the DuPage Fair and Exposition Authority, which exists solely to receive and then dole out funds to the DuPage Fair Association for the annual DuPage County Fair. In 2014, the County Board dissolved the redundant Fairview Fire Protection District and reportedly was looking to do the same to the North Westmont Fire Protection District and the Salt Creek and Highland Hills sanitary districts. And now, state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, and Democratic DuPage County Board member Liz Chaplan are teaming up to ask Sanguinetti’s task force to consider eliminating the DuPage Election Commission. In most other counties in Illinois, elections are run by the county clerk’s office. “We’ve merely asked at this point that the government task force look at that issue and determine whether there is a cost savings there that can enhance accountability and other efficiencies in terms of personnel,” Nybo said. Those are the kinds of questions we need to be asking all across the county and the state. There are going to be hard financial decisions happening in Springfield that are going to painful. There’s no way around it. Consolidation has the potential to create meaningful savings in a relatively painless fashion. It won’t solve the budget crisis all by itself, but it’s certainly a responsible place to start attacking the problem.

SOUND OFF
This is regarding the message that shelters are not used. People need to view the animals because adoption is a serious responsibility. You can’t just look online. Stop shooing people away from the shelters. Adoption is a serious responsibility and you don’t want them going to the wrong people, so allow them to view the animals.
Bullying begins at home I have been a witness of bullying from friends’ children, nieces, nephews and now as young as my grandchildren’s ages. This type of attack sets the stage for a child’s life. They experience low self-esteem and no self-worth. As a result, this type of behavioral attack can lead to suicide because of all the despair the person is feeling. My newest discovery is seeing this firsthand from children’s parents. They bully other parents by forming followers other than leader-type parents’ to attack other parents. Then, from their parents actions, the kids do as they see. The parents around here need to focus on their own lives and stop trying to ruin other parents’ and children’s lives. That means stop the attacks through both verbal confrontations and social media outlets.
If you don’t like it, consider moving from Downers Grove Last week, folks complained about spending by the Downer’s Grove Park District and about the homeless in the library. Have you ever seen how busy the Park District fields are? While I don’t enjoy the homeless hanging around the library, under what legal authority can you exclude them from a public facility? The previous week, someone was crabbing about the Downers Grove Fire Department. Is it possible the same person was moaning earlier about the ill-fated plan to build a new police station and village hall? Sounds like you think everything is a mess. Maybe you should consider moving – everyone would be happier.

Hidden gem in Lemont What an incredible story that was shared in the May 8 edition of the [Lemont] Suburban Life. Local and nearby businesses helped to support the new program that has been introduced to the students. The article failed to mention, Lemont has a “hidden gem” right in the heart of its downtown. Lemont’s quarry trails are at the hub of an incredible interlinking trail system connecting and soonto-be [connecting] Argonne, Heritage, Centennial [and] Cal Sag trails. The state and local municipalities are in the midst of a major trail expansion that seems to be nearly complete. This program helps to introduce and bring more awareness to what Lemont has to offer from a[n] outdoor recreation and tourism destination.
Hire from within the community The village of Lemont workers are so busy that they are passing their work onto another firm at another expense to the homeowners for sprinkler verification. I suppose thinking up new taxation does take time. Why didn’t you hire someone in Lemont to do the work?
Glad BEDS Shelter gets approved So happy the homeless shelter was approved for La Grange. I will be happy to volunteer my time, and so will my children, to those in need. This town needs to realize we are very privileged. We need not be ugly and shun those who need help. Let’s extend a hand and make the world a better place – starting here.

olina and enjoyed the cart’s product. “My family fell in love with Italian ice down there, and there was nothing like it in the Glen Ellyn area,” he said. “We heard a lot of feedback from people ... saying it would be nice to have a dessert destination in downtown Glen Ellyn that a family could walk to or kids could bike to.” Italian ice is a cold dessert that involves mixing water and juice, fruit puree or other flavors while freezing them, creating a more consistent and stronger taste than snow cones or ice cream, Anderson said. The concept proved popular enough to prompt a second spot, he said. The Wheaton cart will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 10
a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays. He said the move to Wheaton was a natural fit. “It’s such a vibrant, active downtown,” he said. “When we came in there we perceived so much foot traffic ... the city was so helpful and receptive to our idea. It feels good coming to Wheaton.” He believes his product, featuring a rotation of up to nine flavors, will continue to be popular and eventually expand to every day of the week in Wheaton, as in Glen Ellyn. To help achieve that, he hopes he can connect to the community, as he did in Glen Ellyn. Janet Dumas, who heads the Wheaton Public Library’s children services department, con-
firmed Anderson will be donating coupons as reading incentive prizes for the library’s summer reading club. Jennifer Eldersveld, a Glen Ellyn resident and patron of Anderson’s cart, said Anderson donated hundreds of cups of Italian ice to the Wheaton Christian Grammar School’s Fall Festival Night fundraiser. Eldersveld, a member of the school’s parent organization, said the cups were a hit with kids and parents alike. “I was impressed with both Eric and his wife and their ability to work with the community and wanting to be involved,” she said. “It was nice to see – he’s a down-to-earth nice guy who is easy to work with.”

He also noted three members who participated in closed conversations of inter-
est are no longer on the board. Clark said it was essential she and Buchholz understand the background and history of prior board decisions, and that listening to closed session would help them to do so. “We are on the board, any decisions moving forward we have to represent, we have to see the reasoning behind that,” she said. “How can we do that when we don’t know the information behind it?”
By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com As the weather warms, visitors to Wheaton’s downtown will have another way to take the edge off the summer heat with a new Italian ice cart opening later this month. Sunset Slush, an east coast cart chain that opened up a Glen Ellyn locale last summer, is introducing a similar cart to dispense the slushy stuff near 120 E. Liberty Drive on the south side of the Wheaton train tracks. Eric Anderson, who owns both local carts and is a longtime Glen Ellyn resident, said he decided to get into the flavored ice business after he and his family took several trips to North Car-

I am interested in changing the shape of my teeth. What would be some of my options? Charise M. Petrelli DDS
Several different options are available to change the shape of teeth, make teeth look longer, close spaces between teeth or repair chipped or cracked teeth. Among the options are bonding, crowns, veneers, and recontouring. • Dental bonding is a procedure in which a tooth-colored resin material (a durable plastic material) is applied to the tooth surface and hardened with a special light, which ultimately “bonds” the material to the tooth. • Dental crowns are tooth-shaped “caps” that are placed over teeth. The crowns, when cemented into place, fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line. • Veneers (also sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials that are designed to cover the front surface of teeth. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth. • Recontouring or reshaping of the teeth (also called odontoplasty, enameloplasty, stripping, or slenderizing) is a procedure in which small amounts of tooth enamel are removed to change a tooth’s length, shape or surface. What are some allergy tips to help control symptoms?
The body can react to almost anything and a symptom reaction could start as late as 30 days after contact with your antigen. We might touch eat or breath a particular item and histamine is released causing symptoms. Antihistamines are one of the 1st lines of defense as it blocks the histamine. Today there are many choices of antihistamines Bob Listecki, Pharmacist and the more popular are the 24 hour versions that do not cause drowsiness. For seasonal allergies try to start the antihistamines a few weeks before the season starts. Spring tree and grass and Fall pollens cause the biggest problems. Another activity is to stop consuming wheat and dairy products as a 2 week trial. These 2 foods are considered the most allergic foods and eliminating them reduces the total load an Integrative Health Center on the body and no reaction occurs. Suburban Life celebrates women By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com In an effort to continue a new tradition, Suburban Life Magazine hosted its second annual Women of Distinction Awards event May 7 at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge. The event, which stems from a tradition started by Shaw Media and McHenry County Magazine in 2012, recognizes 12 women of the western suburbs for their dedication to building and bringing together their communities. The awards ceremony welcomed 190 guests, including last year’s winners and the 2015 honorees’ closest friends, family and colleagues. “We have a remarkable group of women,” Suburban Life Media General Manager Laura Burke said. While Shaw Media has spent the past few years honoring women for their contributions, the event continues to inspire others to work toward their cause, Burke said. The recipients, who were selected by an outside committee, were given a moment to reflect on the occasion, share pieces of advice and thank those who have helped complete their mission.

Huerta Shines for Red Stars in 3-0 Win over Boston Chicago, Illinois – Saturday’s meeting between the Chicago Red Stars and the Boston Breakers was a game of firsts. Hosts Chicago earned a convincing 3-0 victory behind standout performances by several rookies and newcomers, Sofia Huerta leading the charge with two goals and an assist. Former Wisconsin star Cara Walls also had her first tally at the pro level and Kentucky product Arin Gilliland recorded her first career assist. Goalkeeper Michele Dalton earned a shutout in her first ever NWSL match. The Red Stars came close to grabbing the lead less than six minutes in, Vanessa DiBernardo releasing Huerta and the 22-year-oldfinding her match in Breakers netminder Jami Kranich, who rushed off her line for an outstanding save. Mere moments later, Huerta was at the center of another attack, as she sprinted up the left flank and produced a wicked centering cross that was inches too tall and skipped off the forehead of Alyssa Mautz on the goal-line. Shot-stopper Dalton guarded the net for Chicago in the place of World-Cup-bound Canadian star Karina LeBlanc. The26-year-old came up with her first noteworthy block in the 16th minute, Kristie Mewis releasing a thunderbolt from the top of the box that Dalton did well to parry wide. The home side quickly reclaimed control of the play, Huerta sending in a cross from the right and Jen Hoy’s fight seeing the ball pop out near-perfectly to Rachel Quon, whose effort at the doorstep was denied by a last-ditch sliding tackle. The visiting Breakers subsequently had a chance to punish their opponents for the missed opportunities, as wide open forward Stephanie McCaffrey wished she had opted for more power on a wide-open attempt from close range, Dalton comfortable making the save. The Red Stars came agonizingly close to opening the scoring on the immediate counter. Hoy picked out Huerta in the box and the Idaho native’s clever right-footed toe poke whistled just wide of the far post. A minute later, midfielder DiBernardo had the next close look for the hosts, her powerful attempt from about 17 yards forcing a quality stop from goalkeeper Kranich.
Chicago produced yet another excellent chanceless than two minutes into the second period, as the active Mautz nearly scored on her return from an ankle injury when her attempt from the right side of the penalty area was guided over the frame by Kranich. The home side finally did get on the board in the 56th minute, DiBernardo’s well-timed through-ball releasing Huertain on goal and the young striker showing impressive composure in rounding Kranichand slotting into the open net for her first NWSL tally. Red Stars fans thought their team had another goal shortly after the hour mark. A nice combination play on the right saw former Breakers defender Taryn Hemmings take over from Mautz and crossing a dangerous ball into the area that ended up at the feet of Hoy, who had a chance to score with the goalkeeper beaten but instead fired wide of the left post. In the 70th minute, Chicago rookie and substitute Walls put on a clinic in finishing, as she blasted past her marker on a single touch off the feed from Huerta and fired a pin-point accurate ball over Kranich to double her side’s advantage. First-year pro Huerta continued to cause havoc for the Boston backline, nearly scoring out of nowhere in the 82ndminute. Facing away from the goal at a difficult angle, the day’s most dangerous player managed to turn and release a stinging drive on target that forced a reaction save from ‘keeper Kranich. Moments later, Huerta bagged her second goal, finishing at the far post on a Gilliland cross from the left that saw the rookie defender record her first ever NWSL assist. It would be the final noteworthy action of the game, as the hosts held on for the shutout and a crucial three points that puts them at the top of the NWSL standings. The Chicago Red Stars look to earn their fourth win in five NWSL fixtures when they travel to take on Houston Dash on Friday, May 15. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against Washington Spirit. Team effort leads Hilltoppers to sectional title By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard West’s boys gymnastics team might not possess the star power this spring that it has had in the recent past. But thanks to contributions from up and down the roster, the Hilltoppers find themselves among the best gymnastics teams in the state after winning the sectional they hosted Friday. Posting a score of 148.05, Glenbard West easily outclassed the eight-team field to advance to state as a team for the third time in four years. Lyons Township was the runner-up with a 139.95. “They’ve had a great season,” said Glenbard West coach Frank Novakowski, whose team had 15 different individuals participate in the sectional. “They’ve taken first, second or third in every invitational we’ve been at. They’ve done a tremendous job all season. “On Friday night, in the first four events we had sectional champions [in each one] and all were different kids. It was a really impressive overall team effort. We kind of worked all week on our form and cleaning up and trying to improve our scores, and that worked to our advantage.” Paul Bonokollie placed first on the pommel horse with an 8.45 score and Adam Samuta won the rings with an 8.90. Timmy Le tied for first on the floor with a 9.35 and Eric Samuta tied for first on the vault with an 8.90. Eric Samuta was second on the high bar with a 7.90 and third in the all-around competition with a 48.65. “They were all happy,” the

Glenbard West: 148.05 coach said. “But Adam Samuta, our senior captain, his favorite quote of the year that he said was, ‘enjoy the moment but don’t be satisfied.’ They did enjoy it, but they really want a [state] trophy. They are very motivated to keep trying to get better and see what happens on Friday [the first day of state].” Three-time defending state champion Wheaton co-op posted the top sectional score of 153.15 while Stevenson checked in with a 152.3. “It’s going to be tough,” Novakowski said. “Wheaton and Stevenson went 152-153 at their sectional while Willowbrook and us were both at 148. “It’s going to be tough to make up five points and make it to first place [at state], but obviously that’s our goal. I know that we haven’t had our best meet yet. The goal is to have our best meet on Friday and the chips will fall where they may.”
Glenbard South Senior Eric McGovern will represent the Raiders at the IHSA state meet after receiving an at-large berth in the floor exercise. Competing at the Glenbard West sectional May 8, he posted a score of 8.55 in that event. As a team, Glenbard South finished sixth with a score of 122.60.

The Spartans most likely would see host De La Salle in the regional final. “De La Salle is OK,” Winslow said. “They usually have three, four, five kids who are pretty good players. Last year they had two that were very nice players. And we have to play at their place.”

Outlook: T h e S p a r t a n s faced some early heartbreak this spring as they lost senior standouts Taylor VanThournout and Corky Hart to torn ACLs in games two and three, respectively, of the season. Despite having just one senior [Regan Kasprak] now in the starting lineup, St. Francis still managed to go 7-3 through their first 10 matches. “Those two had been such good leaders,” St. Francis coach Jim Winslow said of VanThournout and Hart. “So we’ve had to retool. But it’s a
Outlook: The Warriors have put together an outstanding 2015 campaign and improved to 16-3 on the spring with a 4-0 win against St. Thomas More on May 9. The squad was also a perfect 6-0 in their first goround in the Metro Suburban Conference, outscoring the opposition by a 24-1 margin. As a result, Wheaton Academy was awarded the No. 1 seed in the Class 2A St. Francis sectional. Rounding out the top four seeds in the sectional are Nazareth, St. Francis and RB.
Strong start helps lift Raiders softball to perfect record in conference play Glenbard South’s Ashley Cohen delivers a pitch Tuesday in a home game against Illiana Christian. Cohen was sharp and the Raiders’ offense efficient in a 9-2 win. Bill Ackerman backerman @shawmedia.com
By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The first three innings Tuesday were a perfect microcosm of the success of Glenbard South’s softball program under coach Julie Fonda. Sending 21 batters to the plate during that span, the Raiders hit three balls into the outfield. But thanks in large part to five bunts, two infield singles and four stolen bases, the home team plated nine runs in an eventual 9-2 victory against Illiana Christian. “That’s us in a nutshell,” Fonda said. “We executed really well on the bases and executed at the plate with bunts. That’s us in picture form.” The win upped the team’s
record in the Metro Suburban Conference to 8-0 and avenged a loss to the Vikings a year ago, which was Glenbard South’s only league defeat. “We had a little bit of the revenge mentality with this game,” Fonda said. Payton Carli had three hits, two runs and two stolen bases and Mina Marra went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Tricia Weigand added two runs scored. That early run support was more than enough for Ashley Cohen, who gave up six hits while striking out five in a complete-game performance. Cohen, the team’s starting shortstop, has been the No. 2 pitcher behind Taylor Carli this season. In some games, both have gotten time within the pitching circle.
“Taylor was ready to go but Ashley was on, she really hit her spots,” the coach said. “And Taylor’s been on point all season, she has been great. We’ve been focusing on hitting our spots and making them hit our pitches.” Earlier in the day, Glenbard South was given the No. 2 seed in the Montini sectional behind the host Lady Broncos. The Raiders are nearing the 20-win mark again despite an extremely young group. “They definitely have come together as a group,” Fonda said. “Everybody knows their role and that is what makes this team strong. And they have high expectations for each other. “We are where we need to be right now. I’m really happy with what they’ve done.”
GEN
ch scored the lone goal and Jackie Wescott made seven saves in net. Included in that record was a 4-2 mark in the Metro Suburban Conference. Glenbard South got the No. 5 seed in the Class 2A St. Francis sectional and with a regional semifinal win most likely would face host Riverside Brookfield in the regional final. Those two teams met on April 27 with RB notching a 2-1 victory.
