GLEN ELLYN – Park District plans for a synthetic turf field at Newton Park will continue to move forward, even as a vocal group of residents hope to halt and possibly reverse the process. The issue was discussed at the district Board of Commissioners meeting May 5, which saw a standing-room only audience offer differing opinions on the matter. The field’s renovation has been approved by the board and is already under construction. It will cost slightly less than $1 million and will be paid for by district funds, as well as a combination of Park District and Glenbard Township High School District 87 money through a joint agreement between the two and contributions from local sports teams. Detractors of the project continued to point out the negative impact the field may have at a board meeting May 19. Glen Ellyn resident Nancy Perlman, who initially generated a petition with about 100 signatures calling for work on the field to stop, produced an additional petition with about 40 signatures requesting “artificial safety testing” on the existing synthetic turf fields at Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center. Perlman asked the district to stop the project, citing a lack of open dialogue with residents and a lack of research on how the turf would affect property values and its health and environmental effects.

“Our suggestion is after putting in the improved drainage, you return the field back to its natural grass,” she said. Perlman said she feels residents are not being heard and the district should protect the community from the possible long-term health risks of the field. Fellow Glen Ellyn resident Mike Durschmid agreed with Perlman and questioned why the district would want to continue with the project. “I understand the amount of tires that will be there equates to about 20,000 to 40,000 tires. Do we really want 20,000 to 40,000 tires, and kids playing on a pile of that?” he said. The commissioners, however, were unmoved. Board President Julia Nephew said the issue was thoroughly discussed May 5, and that products were bought and contracts were finalized. Commissioner Jay Kinzler assured attendees the district wants to use as many grass fields as possible, but said because Glen Ellyn being landlocked, the high demand and limited supply of playable fields and the limited amount of use allowed on natural grass fields, a synthetic turf field is the best option. Treasurer Gary Mayo agreed. “Based on everything we looked at and based on the fact that there are thousands of these fields all across the country, and probably hundreds in the Chicago area, we came to the conclusion ... that it was the right thing for the community,” he said. Perlman said residents opposing the new field will continue to explore their options moving forward.

By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – A revised proposal for the redevelopment of the old Giesche Shoes property elicited concern from trustees and residents at a Village Board meeting May 18 at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center. While the project is still in the preliminary stages, residents brought up issues with the proposed five-story mixed-use building, which would include 9,040 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and 110 upper floor one-to-three-bedroom apartments. The proposal from developer The Opus Group includes a three-level parking deck on Hillside Avenue and Main Street with 557 spaces – about 195 more spaces than is currently available at the Main Street and Glenwood Avenue lots, according to village documents. Project architect Chris Hurst said the proposal is consistent with recent development in Glen Ellyn, and the upper levels of the building would be sloped with a gable so as not to overshadow other structures. “We recognize that this will have an impact on downtown Glen Ellyn,” he said. Various trustees asked whether the proposal could be revised for a four-story building. However, Hurst said that wouldn’t fit with Opus’ development mission or financial goals. Trustee Mark Senak pointed to the 2001 village comprehensive plan and the 2009 downtown strategic plan as guides for any development in the area. While agreeing aspects of the redevelopment are consistent with the 2001 and 2009 plans, the five-story height of the building is not in agreement with them, he said. “One of my responsibilities is to honor what was done by my predecessors,” Senak said. Residents largely agreed the height of the proposed building would be inconsistent with others downtown, overpowering the structures and blocking the sun from the sidewalk. The new building as proposed would be 61 feet tall, according to village documents. Forty-five feet is the maximum height permitted downtown, so Opus would need to seek approval for a zoning deviation to continue with construction of the property. Resident Mike Wilson said the new

Staff says Breuder ordered Accreditation is under review positive pre-election mailers By NATHAN LURZ

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com After a victory in April, the former Clean Slate candidates turned new College of DuPage trustees hope to address a series of mailers sent in the weeks before and after the April 7 election. The Board of Trustees, led by its new majority reform coalition, grilled a pair of college administrators during a special meeting May 14 about four postcard mailings of 377,000 each sent out beginning in mid-March by order of President Robert Breuder. Vice President of Marketing and Communications Joe Moore said it was unusual to send such mailers across the entire district during election season. “I would not want to presume to read Dr. Breuder’s mind. The discussion at the time was that there was a lot of negativity in the air regarding the college and this was meant to balance some of that,” he said. That negativity includes possible

misuse of funds, a $763,000 buyout for Breuder approved in January and other issues that have led to county and federal subpoenas and a state audit. Breuder was put on paid leave last month. In early March, Moore said Breuder asked the communications department to send out a postcard across the district on “why COD is the fastest-growing community college.” Later the same week, Breuder requested two more mailers, Moore said, on the college’s fiscal fitness and its recent community outreach and survey. By the end of the month, he asked for a total of six mailings, covering the school’s academic reputation, student testimonials and various auxiliary programs. Moore acknowledged the mailers’ messaging was “not normally postcards we’d send out.” The first four were distributed

In recent months, College of DuPage administrators and faculty have stressed the controversies surrounding the school have not affected its academics. Now, its accreditation is under review because of the turmoil. The college received a letter May 5 from the Higher Learning Commission, which is the school’s accreditation agency, stating the College of DuPage had been placed under review. “Commission policy on Special Monitoring ... allows the Commission President to approve the scheduling of special monitoring for an institution when it is undergoing ‘serious legal, financial, or ethical investigations,’” Commission President Barbara Gellman-Danley stated in the letter. She cited several items and media reports in the letter to school President Robert Breuder, who has been placed on paid leave. Included are “federal civil and criminal investigations related to institutional finances, ethics violations and changes to assigned credit hours for courses offered through the

Suburban Law Enforcement Academy.” Commission officials will visit with the college’s trustees and president – likely interim Joe Collins – and determine whether it is in compliance with several Criteria for Accreditation and Core Components. The review is scheduled June 29 to 30, according to a news release from the college. “While I am confident that the College fully meets the HLC criteria for accreditation, I understand the need for the HLC to conduct an advisory visit,” Collins said in a statement. “We will cooperate completely with the visiting team to ensure they have an accurate view of who we are and what we do.” Faculty Association President Glenn Hansen said in a statement the association was concerned about the visit, but confident in the school’s core mission of teaching and learning. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said during a special meeting May 14 the board was “equal of any task that the advisory commission will put in front of us.” “With transparency, intelligence and energy, we will address any of their concerns successfully and we will work with them to solve any issues that they might have,” she said.

Historical society honors Civil War veterans with flag tribute By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Glen Ellyn residents recently came out to honor local Civil War veterans with a flag tribute leading up to Memorial Day. Community members and representatives of the Glen Ellyn Historical Society placed American flags on the graves of Civil War veterans in preparation for the holiday. The remembrance took place May 19 at Forest Hill Cemetery. The ceremony allowed residents to honor Glen Ellyn soldiers who volunteered for the Civil War. “I think it’s important to always honor the contributions of our veterans,” said Glen Ellyn Historical Society Executive Director Karen Hall. Glen Ellyn, formerly known as Danby, has deep roots in the Civil War, as many volunteers for the effort came from the farming community. Danby and its surrounding farms provided 70 volunteers to fight in the Union Army, according to information provided by local historian Dan Anderson. This represented 15 percent of the area’s population at the time, which is equivalent to about 4,000 members of Glen Ellyn’s current population.

joined the 8th Illinois Cavalry Regiment, according to Anderson, which was composed largely of men from DuPage County. One of the most no-

table Danby volunteers was Marcellus Ephraim Jones, who is credited with firing the first shot at the Battle of Gettysburg. The majority of the 70 volunteers returned to Danby, most as survivors of the war. Sixty-two of them are buried at Forest Hill. “It’s a significant part of Glen Ellyn’s history that most people aren’t aware of,” Anderson said. This week’s ceremony marked the fourth year the historical society coordinated a flag tribute to the Civil War veterans. The remembrance also included the portrayal of the first lady at the time of the Civil War, Mary Todd Lincoln, by local actress and academic Maria Bakalis. When asked why it’s important to have a commemoration for Civil War veterans from Glen Ellyn, historical society member Jean Jeske said it helps keep the memories alive. “Because otherwise the memories slip away and the generations to come don’t understand that. They don’t have that knowledge,” she said. “I think it’s very important because it’s our heritage.” The flags will remain at Forest Hill until May 26, when they will be removed by volunteers.

Glen Ellyn man allegedly strikes county officer SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GLEN ELLYN – Mohammad W. Khan, 32, of the 2N500 block of Pleasant Avenue, Glen Ellyn, has been charged with aggravated battery, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah. Khan was being brought into a courtroom May 15, Darrah said, when he punched a DuPage County Sheriff’s Office sergeant in the head. The sergeant was Mohammad not seriously injured. W. Khan Khan originally was arrested May 14 on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon, according to Darrah, who said Khan was in possession of a loaded pistol. Khan is being held at the DuPage County Jail on a $100,000 bond for the battery charge and a $3,000 bond for the weapon charge, Darrah said. Khan is scheduled to appear in court June 8 for a status hearing. When released from county jail, he will be taken into custody by the FBI Chicago Division on a no bond hold, according to the sheriff’s office website.

Fire causes damage to Village Links SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GLEN ELLYN – The Village Links golf course in Glen Ellyn was damaged after a minor fire the night of May 16, the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company announced in a news release. Crews responded to the golf course after smoke was seen coming from the maintenance building. The building’s sprinkler system contained the fire before crews arrived, the release stated. The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation, according to the release. Damage was limited to the maintenance building. A damage estimate was not available, but fire and water damage was minimal, the release stated. There were no injuries to any golf course personnel or firefighters.

There’s been a lot of talk in the media about celebrities attempting The SNAP Challenge. Throughout the challenge, participants eat up to $4.15 worth of food per day in order get a better grasp on what it means to live on a limited food budget. This means they can’t accept free food from others, nor can they eat food already in their cabinets. COMMUNITY Like many who try, VOICE Gwyneth Paltrow bowed out Lisa after a few days, realizing how incredibly difficult the Doyle challenge is. It’s a challenge that many Bridge Communities families know all too well – because they have lived it, and not because they chose to do so. To make ends meet, many Bridge families rely on SNAP assistance when grocery shopping. This resource helps them use their paycheck to their fullest and creates extra room in their budgets for other necessities, such as gas to get to work and take their children to school or insurance to keep their cars legally on the road. As a result, some of Bridge’s most needed donations are gas cards and gift cards to grocery stores. A $25 gift card can make a huge difference in the life of a Bridge family and make their week that much easier. Also important to keep in mind, there are a lot of needed items that they can’t purchase through the SNAP benefit, such as shampoo, paper towels, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, feminine products and more. Because of these ongoing needs, Bridge has created supply closets in several of our buildings, which we open to clients on a regular basis. These closets are stocked with all the cleaning and personal care products that they need – just like every family. We always need donations of cleaning and personal care items for our Bridge families, and you can help. Adopt a supply closet for a Bridge apartment building or host a cleaning supplies drive in your school, religious community, social clubs or neighborhood. We spend a lot of time worrying about preventing things that might never happen. We buy homeowners’ insurance and install smoke detectors in case a fire ever breaks out. We grab an umbrella on the way out the door in case it rains. We arrange for our first responders to have training in all sorts of emergency situations, in case anyone in our community should ever experience such a calamity. The thing is, we never really know how likely any of these things are. Most of us know someone who has dealt with a house fire, but most people don’t have their house burn down. There was rain in the forecast for this past Sunday, but barely a drop was seen. Some first responders get special training in case of a train derailment of an oil shipment, but that almost never – Well, that last one isn’t quite as true as it used to be. While train derailments are still quite rare, the number of oil shipments on our railways has skyrocketed – and there have been some unsettling derailments of those shipments in North America. In 2008, there were 9,500 railway oil shipments recorded in the U.S.; by 2013, that number had risen to 435,000, according to a Congressional report. That massive spike has been accompanied this year by derailments in West Virginia and Ontario and one in March in Galena, Ill. Fortunately, there have been no deaths in these incidents, but the same can’t be said for the village of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, in Canada, which suffered 47 deaths after a derailment and explosion in 2013. Many of these oil tankers are rumbling through Chicago’s suburbs on a daily basis, including on Metra’s BNSF, Union Pacific West and Heritage Corridor lines. Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel, who’s eager to bring more attention to this issue, has heard reports that there are about 40 shipments going through his village on a weekly basis. As Weitzel points out, most of the communities in western Cook and DuPage counties were built around their rail lines, with vibrant David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

commercial districts nestled right up to the tracks. If an incident like what happened in Quebec were to occur here, the toll could be catastrophic. Weitzel has worked to bring attention not only to this risk but to the lack of training available for local police officers, who would likely be the first to respond to the scene of any such accident. He’s sent letters to Gov. Bruce Rauner and to Anthony Foxx, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, pointing out the difficulties local agencies have in getting information on when exactly such tankers are passing through and in getting training for officers. Such training already exists, Weitzel said, and there are programs in place to allow firefighters to make use of it. But he said the cost, distance and lengthy waiting list make it impractical for him to send any officers right now. Thus far, Weitzel has received no response from his letters. He’s had informal discussions with other state and federal officials and received nothing more than vague promises, or protestations that he’s overstating the issue, that the train cars that pass through our area aren’t going fast enough to derail or real-time information on the tankers can’t be shared for fear of terrorists intercepting and then misusing the information. It’s easy to dismiss Weitzel’s concerns. But it seems like every disaster of the past 20 years has had some sort of warning ignored, whether it was 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill ... the list goes on. Are the odds of an oil tanker derailment and explosion in our area high? Probably not. But knowing there’s a lot more oil flowing through our towns on a regular basis, it sure would be comforting to know someone is taking these concerns seriously. We’d like to see state and especially federal officials take more steps to ease everyone’s minds that everything possible is being done to prevent another Lac-Mégantic incident.

To the person who said to stop shooing people away from shelter animals, we are not shooing people away who are ready to adopt an animal, a family pet. We don’t want the people who are coming for something to do because they clog up the shelter like a zoo. We want the people that are 100-percent ready to adopt; anybody else can see the animals on our website. And in regards to the rescues that do not have a brick-andmortar building, those people have the most limited time to spend adopting an animal out because they do not have a physical shelter. Their animals are at vet offices or foster homes. So, until you are 100-percent ready to adopt and see an animal, don’t fill out an application.

Someone needs to fix health clubs’ cancellation policies. No matter how much of a notice you give, you still wind up paying for the extra month. You pay an enrollment fee, you pay a monthly fee, you sign up right away and can start working out, but even when I brought my health club a doctor’s note saying that I had to stop my workout regimen, I was charged an extra month ... That’s just wrong.

Huerta Magic Earns Red Stars Comeback Draw at Houston Chicago, Illinois – The Chicago Red Stars stayed undefeated in their fifth NWSL regular season game on Friday, fighting back from two goals down against hosts Houston Dash, courtesy of a second consecutive brace by reigning NWSL Player of the Week Sofia Huerta. The rookie bagged both of her tallies in the second half, including the first immediately after Houston had doubled its lead courtesy of a Kealia Ohai strike. Rachel Axon had scored the day’s opening goal for the Dash on an opening-half penalty kick. The hosts created the first promising opportunity in the 10th minute, Jen LaPonte hitting a long ball into the penalty area and Brittany Bock beating netminder Michele Dalton to the ball, only to see her headed redirect float just over the frame. The Dash had another quality look 14 minutes later, as Chicago’s New Zealand international Abby Erceg headed the ball out to Tiffany McCarty at the edge of the box and the 24-year-old fired through traffic to force a solid stop from Dalton. Houston did find the net just before the half-hour mark. Red Stars defender Arin Gilliland’s desperation tackle brought Ohai to the ground inside the area and Rachael Axon opened the scoring by side-footing a textbook penalty kick inside the right post. Huerta first knocked on the Dash door in the 41st minute of the match, as she received the ball at the top of the box and cut across a defender to her left before rifling a left-footed blast toward goal that was parried wide by diving opposition goalkeeper Bianca Henninger. Chicago increased the urgency after the break and created two close looks in quick succession. In the 56th minute, Alyssa Mautz crossed the ball in from the right and a wide-open Rachel Quon pushed the ball wide for an agonizing miss from the doorstep. Mautz sent in another dangerous cross from the same flank moments later, and Vanessa DiBernardo redirected it to Hoy at the far post, followed by a toe poke under pressure that

sent the ball sailing over the bar from close range. Instead of seeing the scores leveled, the fans at Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium celebrated the Dash’s second tally on an excellent counter attack just before the hour mark. Having won possession inside their own penalty area, the hosts played the ball out to Melissa Henderson near the center circle, and the 25-year-old sprinted into the opposition half before releasing a streaking Ohai. The second-year attacker did well to confidently slot her finish underneath the onrushing Dalton to double her side’s lead. The Red Stars promptly responded to the additional setback. Hoy’s delicate 60th-minute touch put Hoy through on the right side of the box and the first-year forward found the net with a wellplaced shot toward the far post. The visitors continued to put pressure on the Dash following the goal, and Mautz nearly added the icing on her strong individual performance with a 68th-minute equalizer, the Houston defense scrambling to clear the Missouri native’s redirect of Danielle Colaprico’s corner kick from the left off the line. Chicago’s relentlessness finally paid off in the 81st minute, Gilliland sending a ball into the penalty area that substitute Cara Walls laid off to Huerta, who displayed some outstanding footwork in cutting to her left and blasting a low shot past the outstretched arm of metminder Henninger. It would be the final noteworthy moment of the match, as the visitors remained at the top of the NWSL table with a hard-earned point on the road. The Chicago Red Stars look to earn their fourth win in six regular season games when they travel to take on defending champions FC Kansas City on Saturday, May 23. Previously, expenditures below $25,000 only needed the signature of the college’s treasurer and president for approval, meaning the board didn’t always know the extent of certain expenditures, said Vice Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi, who called the measure a second check on the checks. Trustee Dianne McGuire said she supported the action,

Hands down of course, the chicken is the hero of the meal. Never frozen, the meat is marinated for 24 hours and cooked to order. According to the restaurant’s website, the recipe dates back to two female farm owners who sold chickens to the original spot when it was just a gas station with a lunch counter around the 1940s. Dell Rhea took over the Chicken Basket in 1963, and what endures is the carefully crafted, breaded and deep-fried meal – a crunchy, tender, lip-smacking and succulent sensation. The baked mac and cheese is a hearty complementary dish to the main course. Tiny elbow macaroni are smothered in what the eatery describes as a “Colorado River of Cheese Sauce,” topped with shredded cheeses and baked until golden brown. The restaurant menu extends to sandwiches, ribs, salad bar, soups and seafood, plus prime rib, roast turkey and other specials on various days of the week.

The only mistake my parents and I made that Sunday afternoon was not saving room for dessert. And for those who know me and my mother best, the only way to our hearts is a classic root beer float. Dell Rhea’s, which also proposes a Route 66 Dreamsicle Float and a slice of apple, key lime or cherry pie, keeps in mind that the best way to truly start and end a meal is with the company you keep, savoring the time you spend together.

WILLOWBROOK – Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket is tucked among small, one-story buildings and a few chain hotels on a dusty, winding road that once reigned as Route 66. Today, the towering neon marquee of the Willowbrook establishment enjoys a quieter perch. Inside tells a different story. Clusters of relatives and favorite friends are gathered around small tables draped in red-andwhite-checkered tablecloths. A darker shade of patterned red curtains flanks the windows. Ceramic chickens, framed newspaper articles and photographs fill in the spaces of sporadically placed shelves and countertops. A small fireplace stands flat against the wall on the far end of the dining room. The room feels familiar. It feels like home. And there’s no denying that the 66-plus-yearold restaurant has greeted passersby throughout the decades, treated them like family and wished them well on the way to their destinations. As for the Chicken Basket, it arrived in the Route 66 Hall of Fame. As my parents and I took our seats and scanned the menu, we adopted the rhythm of the nostalgic room, swapping smiles and stories. Importantly, we prepped ourselves for the beginning of our comfort food adventure. We began our meal with appetizers we consider classic – fried chicken liver and gizzards. The tasty starters were served with sweet-and-spicy barbecue sauce. What’s noteworthy about them is their flaky coating, especially the chicken gizzards. Both were crispy, moist and lightly seasoned – neither bogged down by a dry outer crust nor drowning in oil. Our appetizers were followed shortly by two of Dell Rhea’s specialties – its famous fried chicken in a basket and baked mac and cheese. The basket comes with four, finger-licking pieces of chicken (leg, wing, breast and thigh), shoestring french fries, homemade coleslaw and baked biscuits. I don’t even know

West gymnasts ‘keep climbing’ for top-5 state finish By BILL STONE editorial@mysuburbanlife.com HINSDALE – Senior Adam Samuta recognized the ability of Glenbard West’s boys gymnastics team from the first practice of the season. “I had full faith the whole time,” Samuta said. “I knew these guys put in the work in the offseason. They were ready to compete. We kept climbing.” The Hilltoppers posted season highs in their final three meets and climaxed with 148.25 points for fifth place at the state team meet May 15 at Hinsdale Central. Samuta was the only senior among the Hilltoppers’ lineup of 14. The 2014 Hilltoppers were fourth at state (151.90), but they graduated nine se-

Eric Samuta was seventh on high bar (7.85). “At the beginning of the year, I set goals,” Bonokollie said. “One was getting a 9.0 and the other was making state finals.” Eric Samuta, the team’s lone all-arounder, scored 49.15 with all six scores counting toward the team total.

He finished 15th in the all-around. “It’s very fun to be an all-arounder because you get to see every event happen right there,” Eric Samuta said. Adam Samuta expects to see continued progress from the Hilltoppers and his younger brother. “[We learned] it takes a little more to be a champion. I definitely see it in them. They’ve just got to put in the work,” Adam Samuta said. “My brother had a heck of a performance. He did awesome. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions, but I love that guy.”

West girls track relay finds success; South claims sectional title By BILL STONE editorial@mysuburbanlife.com CAROL STREAM – Glenbard West senior girls track and field sprinter Mary Nevins trains hard throughout the indoor season but rarely competes to avoid possible injuries from the tighter turns. “It always seems like I have something to prove,” Nevins said. “Other people might be like, ‘Oh, is she going be OK in outdoor?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me.’ ” At the Class 3A Glenbard North sectional May 14, Nevins excelled when it mattered most. For the second straight year, Nevins won the 400-meter dash and helped the 4x400 relay advance to the state meet. Nevins (59.76 in 400) led off the second-place relay with juniors Emma Winans, Nicole Rogus and Ellen Daniels (4:06.75), which automatically advanced with a top-two finish. The all-junior 4x800 relay of Caitlyn Reick, Abby Shaver, Kathryn Kenwood and Grace Rogers won in a season-best 9:32.00. Freshman Daniela Polencheck

advanced in the wheelchair 100 (25.34) and 200 (49.45), events that debuted at the 2014 state meet. This is Nevins’ third state trip with the 4x400. Winans and Daniels also return from the 2014 state quartet that finished 10th (3:58.16). “It’s cool to qualify individually. But the relay is just so different, to be able to share with three other people,” Nevins said. “Honestly, it’s so much more fun. I’m so happy I get to finish with these guys.” Reick and Rogers were 2013 state qualifiers with the 4x800. Rogers, Kenwood and Shaver also have competed at the state cross-country meet. “That’s actually the coolest thing,” Shaver said. “We’re all friends. We’re all in the same class and run together literally every day.” Junior Lindsay Graham, the 2014 state cross-country champion who was second in the 3,200 at state last year, scratched because of extreme foot pain from a shifting growth plate. She was entered in the 3,200 but then did not receive medical clearance to compete.

Glenbard South The Glenbard South girls track team qualified five individuals and three relays from the Class 2A sectional it hosted May 15. As a team, the Raiders claimed the sectional trophy with 122 points, eight more than runner-up Trinity. Mercedes Whitaker advanced in a pair of events, placing second in the shot put (37 feet) and the discus (101 feet, 1 inch). Kate Rumel (10-3) and Libby Kohout (9 feet) were first and second, respectively, in the pole vault. Caroline Arlasky was victorious in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:43.93 and Becca Sippel won the 1,600 with a clocking of 5:22.43. The 4x100 relay team of Daziyah Arrington, Suvannah Williams, Taylor Blohm-Bivins and TaJanae Tate was the runner-up, as was the 4x200 quartet of Blohm-Bivins, Tate, Krista Kreshpanji and Williams. Kevin Uvodich placed first at No. 2 singles while the doubles teams of Brendan Colgan and Avi Panjwani, Matt Harrington and Ryan Marco, and Neal Choksi and Numaan Mahmood all were victorious. Jared Schwarz was the runner-up at No. 1 singles.

The doubles pairing of Nicol Gorcsos and Katelyn Keane had a strong showing at the IHSA state meet May 15 and 16 at Eastern Illinois University. Gorcsos and Keane finished the tournament with a 4-2 record. They began with a 21-14, 21-16 win against Katie McGriff and Joyce Zheng of Naperville Central, and after a loss, the duo rattled off three straight victories, all in three games, before losing in the fifth round of the consolation bracket. Mirian Loarca also competed in the singles bracket and won one match.

Gborie also came in third in the 200 dash. Chris Buechner placed third in the 800, Jake Jaskowiak was fourth in the 1,600, Nate Crail was fifth in the 400 and Eric Neumann finished fifth in the 3,200. The 4x800 relay team of Buechner, Ben Hecht, Crail and Jaskowiak won with a clocking of 7:47.16. The 4x400 relay was second and the 4x100 and 4x200

The doubles team of Emily Schmidt and Lydia Schlaefke represented the Raiders at the IHSA state meet. The duo finished the event with a 2-2 record.
