mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The Glen Ellyn School District 41 Board of Education had trouble determining how to proceed with its Facilities Community Task Force during its meeting May 26. Perhaps the most controversial issue among the board members is the potential hiring of an external facilitator to provide guidance to the task force, a group of community members that will address space issues in the district. Considerations of the task force include how to create space to support full-day kindergarten, the removal of portables at Hadley Junior High School, relieving overcrowding at elementary schools and addressing other space needs at all five district schools. Two facilitators have presented options to the board; Unicom-Arc presented its plan for facilitating the task force May 11 and Millennia Consulting

Both companies would cost about the same, according to Superintendent Paul Gordon, with a per-day rate of about $1,200. ing Unicom-Arc. Cooper suggested an internal employee who already has experience in the district, such as Chief Communications Officer Erika Krehbiel, might be a better fit for the job. “It would simplify and expedite all communications,” he said. “I think she would comfortably deal with any participant.” However, Krehbiel said having an outside facilitator could provide more objective guidance to the task force. Also during the May 26 meeting, board members discussed full-day kindergarten as a game changer in the district that could prove too significant a decision for community members to make without board approval. Board members Kurt Buchholz and Stephanie Clark had problems with the board handing off the issue of full-day kindergarten to the community and said the board should make the decision and then involve the community on future steps. “Do not dump the full-day kindergarten in their lap,” Buchholz said. “Make a decision, give them options as to how to do this and then give it to the community.” Clark agreed the board should decide the fate of full-day kindergarten. She also suggested re-evaluating space issues at Churchill Elementary School to see if adding two more classrooms will diminish overcrowding. The board voted in February to build four classrooms at the school to eliminate portable use. “We should evaluate the Churchill plans for a second set of additions to see how much it would cost to add two more rooms there,” Clark said. Board member Joe Bochenski said it is important the board realize there are more issues the task force will have to address than full-day kindergarten and that community involvement will help with a variety of challenges. “There’s more here than just fullday kindergarten,” Bochenski said. “I don’t want that to get lost if you narrow it down to one issue.” Board President Erica Nelson said ultimately lack of space is the main issue the district faces. She said space issues, including the possible addition of full-day kindergarten, should involve the input of the whole community. Nelson said she would need to further discuss the matter with Gordon and evaluate how to proceed.

Board shifts power through policy changes and more In a marathon five-hour meeting that featured divided votes on almost every issue on what became a nearly 20-item agenda, the College of DuPage Board of Trustees tackled a wide range of topics May 21.
1. Board gives itself more power The board took measures to distance itself from the college president’s office, increase self-policing and up the amount of potential control it has over the school and its administration. Trustees approved a series of changes to board policies 6-1, with Erin Birt dissenting. Many centered on placing the president’s office below the board and include: • Specifying the president’s organization and management of the college be under board direction • Mandating a minimum annual performance evaluation for the president • Requiring board approval for all procedures under the president’s oversight • Allowing board modification or revocation of those procedures
• Removing the president from agenda preparation • Placing the board chairwoman in charge of maintaining closed-session recordings. The trustees also greenlighted the provision of board office space and the requirement of board approval for any trustee reimbursements exceeding $335 in any fiscal year and empowered its members to become a more influential part of the long-range planning process. “We are charged with policy here on this board,” Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said. “Our job is to give a structure. And we pass on the implementation of that to the president and the president in turn creates policies with staff and faculty, and in the past, … the board has not been able to reach down and correct problems as readily as needed.”
2. Consent agenda axed Much of the meeting was spent talking about items that, according to the agenda, weren’t to have been discussed. After board Vice Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi and Secretary Frank Napolitano voiced concerns about all but two topics on the eight-item

consent agenda – which is intended for items considered routine by the board that do not require a separate vote or discussion – trustees chose to vote on each item individually. Mazzochi said after the meeting she objected to the level of detail presented for the items, calling specifically for public bidding information and program goals in each purchase proposal. She said she was surprised staff hadn’t been asked for the requested details before and there was a “learning curve” for staff to adjust to the new postelection board. “I would hope that the administration is going to be more detailed in the information they give not just merely to the trustees but to the public … so that everybody has the ability to view this information in advance and can genuinely vet the decisions that the administration is making,” she said.
3. No long-range plan? While it wasn’t up for a vote, the agenda included an item about the college’s strategic long-range plan, aimed at creating goals and a policy direction for the school’s future.
However, Hamilton urged her fellow trustees to consider not moving forward with a plan until after the school implemented other policy changes and went through a state policy and financial audit. “I believe it is not the time to adopt it,” she said. “I, for one, do not envision any further development of a plan until many open questions at COD are resolved. Our strategic plan for the time being has to be identify, repair and transform.”
4. Birt (mostly) opposes board Former board chairwoman Birt largely continued her streak of opposition. Before leaving the meeting early because of a schedule conflict, she voted against or abstained from nearly all the items the board considered. Birt also was not in attendance for the May 14 special meeting because of a schedule conflict and led fellow returning trustees Joseph Wozniak and Dianne McGuire in a uniform no-vote protest April 30, saying the agenda was compiled without the consent of the entire board.

Honoring an enduring presence Painted flowerpots downtown to recognize Young’s Appliances By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – As the weather warms up and flowers bloom, Glen Ellyn residents will notice creatively painted pots around downtown in the coming weeks, too. Each year, the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce honors one of its long-serving businesses in Glen Ellyn by decorating the village with brightly colored pots. Chamber Executive Director Mike Formento said the chamber honors businesses that have had a long-lasting impact on the Glen Ellyn community. “Our principal goal is to recognize the length of time that businesses have been in the community, which of course reflects on the success of the business,” Formento said.
This year, the chamber will honor Young’s Appliances, 500 Crescent Blvd. Young’s is celebrating its 84th anniversary in business in downtown Glen Ellyn. This will mark the 15th year the chamber will honor a business with the painted pots. The chamber’s beautification committee and the village jointly provide 13 huge flowerpots to be painted with congratulatory designs by the Glenbard West High School art department. The pots then will be distributed throughout the downtown. “We think that it is valuable to the community and valuable to the merchant to recognize that they are respected and valued as a business in Glen Ellyn,” Formento said. Other businesses that have been honored during the past 15 years include McChesney & Miller grocery store, the DuPage Medical Group and Giesche shoe store. Young’s Appliances owner
Doug Samuels is honored to see his business recognized by the chamber. “I’m humbled. I was totally taken by surprise when they told me their decision,” Samuels said. “I’m grateful. I think it’s a nice gesture.” According to Samuels, Young’s is the oldest business in Glen Ellyn after McChesney & Miller grocery store closed last year after more than 150 years in business. Samuels attributes the success of his business to an overall good value by providing quality costumer service, delivery and installation to all clients. While the price may be higher, the overall quality of the service and products makes doing business with Young’s worth it, according to Samuels. “We’re hoping for another celebration next year with our 85th year,” Samuels said. Lake Ellyn plans pared down to $2.6M, but still a go for summer By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Lake Ellyn Park will soon see $2.6 million in renovations. Intended construction for the park was finalized in a 2012 master plan, but the Glen Ellyn Park District is just now moving forward with bidding for the project. The district is soliciting bids for the park, with work scheduled to start in July, and has approved spending $2.6 million in capital reserve funds on the project in the next year. The official bid for the contract was made available May 18 with prospective contractor bids due June 9. District Executive Director Dave Harris is hoping five to 10 contractors bid on the project. “This Park District has expended a lot of time and effort to review this property,” he said. “It’s what a lot of people think of when they think of Glen Ellyn.” The district initially budgeted $3 million in improvements but suspended renovation of the park’s playground after a $400,000 Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant the project received from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources was put on hold by Gov. Bruce Rauner in February. Harris said the district’s planned improvement expenses include engineering and professional services such as landscaping, architecture and permitting; renovating and restoring the boathouse; converting the north-south pathway to permeable pavers; renovating the deck; boathouse flood protection; and installation of a secondary bathroom closer to the playground. “It’s important for us to invest in this asset so it lasts another 50 to 100 years,” Harris said. The boathouse is showing its years. It’s time to do these things.” Harris hopes to see the project completed by spring 2016.

Now’s the time to revel in nice weather, great events In the depths of January’s icy freeze, no doubt many of us wondered why anyone would choose to live in such a frozen wasteland. In February and March, the mercury slowly climbed, but still our teeth chattered and our ice scrapers were required most mornings. Even April brought its share of unexpectedly cool weather. None of that matters now. Short-sleeve weather is here, and now we remember why we wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. As this year’s Memorial Day parades and cookouts recede from view, many of us are taking stock of what to do with the rest of the nice weather stretching out ahead. Maybe a trip to somewhere interesting, a visit to distant family or even a jaunt to a foreign nation. There’s an abundance of options. While you’re making out your list, don’t forget to factor in all the great local festivals and events right in our area. For instance, in the coming months you can look forward to: • Taste of Wheaton from June 4 to 7 • The Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival on June 13 and 14 • Rotary Grove Fest in Downers Grove from June 25 to 28 • FitzGerald’s American Music Festival from July 3 to 6 in Berwyn

COD football coach dies after concert fall By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com A College of DuPage football coach died May 22 after falling from a catwalk at a Chicago music venue, according to authorities. Kyle W. Kirchhoff, 24, of the 3800 block of Pondview Drive, Hanover Park, was attending a show by the bands Marmozets, Chevelle and The Used at the Aragon Ballroom, 1106 W. Lawrence Ave., when he fell at 10:20 p.m., according to Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Thomas Sweeney, landing on metal on the floor and sustaining wounds to his chest. Kirchhoff was transported to Weiss Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:54 p.m., according to a report from the Office of the Medical Examiner of Cook County. An official cause and manner of death are pending, office investigator Jamie Giller stated in an email.
Sweeney said Area North detectives are conducting a death investigation. Kirchhoff was a defensive line coach at College of DuPage, according to his LinkedIn profile. Before that, he had been an assistant and defensive coach at Bartlett High School, which he also attended. Kirchhoff studied sports management at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he played on the football team. A memorial was hosted May 25 at Bartlett High School. Visitation will be at 3 to 9 p.m. May 28 at Salerno’s Rosedale Chapel, 450 W. Lake St., Roselle. A funeral Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. May 29 at St. Isidore Catholic Church, 427 W. 'The beloved husband of the late Alice nee: Borowski; loving father of Lawrence (Nancy) and Janet (Ken) Parish; dear grandfather of Benjamin, Ali and Ashley Parish; devoted son of the late Clarence and Bertha; fond brother of the late Lorraine (late Robert) Happle and late Raymond (late Regina) and cherished uncle of many nieces and nephews. Howard “Bud” Gaffney, “Handsome Grandpa”, of Glen Ellyn, formerly of Wilmington, NC, passed away Sunday, May 17, surrounded by family. He was born in Glen Ridge New Jersey October 13, 1927. After high school he spent two years in the Navy. He then attended The Newark College of Engineering and received a BS in Chemical Engineering. He worked for American Cyanamid for thirtyfive years. He was very community minded. He was a Junior Achievement mentor. He was President of the Red Cross, Kiwanis, and United Way. He was very proud being a Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus, and more so when the family was chosen Family of the Year. He taught his children the importance of giving back. Bud was the biggest jokester. He could be counted on always for a laugh. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty “Honey”; his four children, Leslie (Ed) O'Connor, Mark, Todd (Treacy), and Cristy. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, whom he adored. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Ruth; his sisters, Jean, Betty and Joan. orget the adage “Youth is wasted on the young”; today’s single, female baby boomers are happy, confident and healthy. Seventy-six percent of single women over 55 feel younger than their age, according a survey by retirement community homebuilder Del Webb. Seventy-four percent of respondents said they’re as happy, or happier, than they were at age 35, and nearly half (45 percent) believe their best years are yet to come. In fact, more than one in five (22 percent) say they feel more attractive than they did at 35. Highest obesity rates Recent data from the Trust for America’s Health showed that the baby boom generationis the most obese of any age group. According to the study, in 17 states more than 35 percent of boomers are obese, and in 41 states, more than 30 percent of boomers are obese. “While baby boomers are living longer these days, they may be living sicker,” said national health expert Dr. Lori Shemek. “Boomers’ attention to looks bypassed their attention to their weight’ leading to a generation that is living longer, but sicker.”
Eat more greens Something as easy as adding more greens to your diet could help slow cognitive decline and improve memory, according to new research. “With baby boomers approaching old age, there is huge public demand for lifestyle behaviors that can ward off loss of memory and other cognitive abilities with age,” said Martha Clare Morris, assistant provost for community research at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “Our study provides evidence that eating green leafy vegetables and other foods rich in vitamin K, lutein and beta-carotene can help to keep the brain healthy to preserve functioning.” Reasons to not retire Baby boomers are changing retirement, according to a recent study by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies. Sixty-five percent of boomers plan to work past age 65 or do not plan to retire. Slightly more than half (52 percent) plan to continue working after they retire. Given widespread savings shortfalls, it is not surprising that 62 percent of the boomers surveyed who plan to work in retirement and/or past age 65 indicate that their main reason is income or health benefits. What is surprising is that 34 percent plan to work for enjoyment, including 18 percent who want to stay involved and 16 percent who enjoy what they do.

Dr. Kelenyi describes peripheral neuropathy as damage to the nerves, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. “This can result in pain, loss of feeling, and inability to control muscles, such as difficulty with walking. As with any other condition, there is no “one size fits all” remedy for those suffering from neuropathies and treatment may vary depending on the cause and severity.” However, many individuals can and do find relief using natural remedies. There are a few primary types of neuropathies: Large or small diameter or both as well as motor. Red Stars Roll on in 2-1 Away Win over Defending Champs Chicago, Illinois – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars remained undefeated against defending champions FC Kansas City on Saturday, bagging a 2-1 away win in the highly-anticipated blockbuster clash of the weekend. Sofia Huerta scored in her third consecutive match and defender Taryn Hemmings had the late game-winner for the visitors in meeting that had been delayed due to inclement weather and was played in pouring rain that didn’t let up at any point during the 90 minutes. Chicago nearly conceded a goal in the 7th minute, as shot-stopper Michele Dalton breathed a sigh of relief after being pressured by Sarah Hagen and attempting a clearance that bounced off the FCKC forward and rolled just wide of the right post. The Red Stars created their first quality chance in the 32nd minute. With a defender wrestling her for the ball, Arin Gilliland managed to sprint to the by-line and send in a low cross that was touched on frame by Jen Hoy and parried wide by goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. Chicago would get on the board mere moments later, Vanessa DiBernardo swinging in a corner kick from the right that would see the 23-yearold earn her league-leading fourth assist. The freshman posted a time of 21.05 in the 100-meter race and then crossed the line in 46.88 in the 200. “This is my first year doing it,” said Polencheck, who added that she had never experienced anything like racing in front of a big crowd. “It’s a little hard because my [racing] chair is a used one and it has been used for so many people. ... It’s supposed to turn on the lane, but mine doesn’t so I have to use my own hands to do the turns.” Mary Nevins competed in the prelims of the 400 on May 22 and came in with a time of 1:00.41. The 4x800 relay team of Caitlyn Reick, Abigail Shaver, Kathryn Kenwood and Grace Rogers clocked a 9:34.09 while the 4x400 quartet of Nevins, Emma Winans, Nicole Rogus and Ellen Daniels had a time of 4:11.84.
Glenbard South A year ago, Kate Rumel competed at the IHSA state meet in the pole vault but never got over the bar at 9 feet. This time around, the Glenbard South senior found herself standing on the awards podium after finishing in seventh place at the Class 2A finals at Eastern Illinois University on May 23. “Last year I took six jumps the whole time and I never made nine feet,” Rumel said. “I never thought I would medal at all. Holding up our hands together on the podium [with the other medalists] was surreal, that was the best part.” Rumel posted a final height of 10-6. “I’ve matched 10-6 before,”

CICERO – With five straight regional titles, Glenbard South’s girls soccer team is usually playing its best come the postseason. The injury-riddled Raiders (8-10-1) led the host Bulldogs 2-1 until goals by Allie Kracera with 10:48 left in regulation and later with 5:22 remaining in the second overtime rallied RB to a 3-2 win at Carbajal Field. “I’m really proud of our effort,” Raiders’ coach Glen Eggert said. “At the end of the day, it’s about playing with heart against a strong, talented and technical team. We tried to play together and play hard. “You could see how gassed they were by the end. They really left it out there – that’s all you can ask.” The Raiders scored early in each half. Then in a 1-1 tie with 35:53 left in regulation, a 35-yard free kick by Sarah Ziegler deflected off an RB player and into the net for an own goal and a 2-1 Raider lead. “We came in with a specific game plan and we scored twice off of it because we were disciplined,” Eggert said. “It would have been nice to steal the win in this one, but they played to the best of their ability and you can’t ask for more from a team.” Defender Marlena Benner limped off the field several times, epitomizing the maximum effort by a squad that lost offensive leader Taylor Ray to injury early in the season. “[Freshmen junior varsity team call-ups] Emma Johnson and Danielle Palmieri really stepped it up and played big minutes for us today,” Eggert said. Raider seniors included goalkeeper Jacquelyn Wescott and Ziegler, both three-year varsity players. Village of Glen Ellyn DuPage County, Illinois Hill Avenue over East Branch DuPage River Section No.: 10-00154-00-BR On January 29 2015, the Illinois Department of Transportation (DOT), Bureau of Local Roads and Streets approved the design for the Hill Avenue Bridge over the East Branch DuPage River improvements as presented in the Project Development Report prepared by Bollinger, Lach & Associates. This project consists of the removal of the old two span bridge which was originally constructed in 1956 and the construction of a new three span bridge at the same location due to the existing structure being considered structurally deficient. The proposed structure will provide for 12’ lanes in each direction with a 3’ shoulder on both sides of the bridge. The profile of the bridge will be raised approximately 2.5’ at the bridge to avoid adverse hydraulic impacts to surrounding properties. The Hill Avenue bridge will be closed during construction and traffic detoured for the duration of the project, which is anticipated to begin in 2016 with traffic tentatively detoured along Crescent Boulevard. The Project Development Report and other documents pertinent to the design of the project are available for inspection, review, and copying (at requestor’s expense) at the Village of Lombard.
