By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Newton Park will be the site of a synthetic turf field come mid-July, a change that has some residents concerned and others applauding the effort. The Glen Ellyn Park District addressed the issue before a packed audience at a Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday. The field’s renovation, which has been approved by the board and is already under construction, will cost just less than $1 million. It will be paid for by district funds, as well as a combination of Park District and Glenbard Township High School District 87 money through a joint agreement between the two, and contributions from local sports teams. Enrollment for teams that could potentially use the field totals 4,210 participants, according to Park District documents. This high number, along with an increased variety of sports, has led to overuse of fields because of demand and limited inventory, according to Park District Director Dave Harris. Harris said when Newton Park’s
field is converted from grass to synthetic turf, teams would be able to use it up to 200 days per year, as opposed to as few as 30 days with the grass field. Some residents were unhappy with the decision, and said the board did not communicate its plans and that studies on the health and safety of turf fields are inconclusive. Glen Ellyn resident Nancy Perlman presented a petition with the names of community members against the switch from grass to synthetic turf. Perlman said she found out about the project two days before construction began through a letter from the Park District. After asking other residents about the project, she said the only notification they received was a green flier created by fellow neighbors of Newton Park. “The majority of residents I spoke with do not want the artificial turf to be put in,” she said. Perlman said residents wanted full disclosure of how much money each organization is contributing to the project, along with long-term agreements. She also had concerns about the turf, which she said is made from recycled tires, having carcinogenic materials,

heavy metals and volatile chemicals. Glen Ellyn resident Mike Wilson also was concerned of the health hazards of the turf, and said the fields are a “waste dump” of toxic materials and the long-term effects could be damaging. “We never see what is going on until it’s too late for a lot of us,” he said. “We shouldn’t be using these materials. They are very toxic materials they are putting into these compounds.” Others, however, championed the district’s efforts as long overdue and necessary to accommodate the high level of athletics and make scheduling easier. Among them was Glen Ellyn resident Bill Crosby, who coaches local football and lacrosse teams. “We are already seeking out turf as much as we possibly can, especially when it comes to lacrosse, because it is a spring sport and it is very difficult because fields that are grass are torn up and we can’t use them,” he said. Crosby said it should be the parent’s decision whether their children use the field. “I really appreciate you all being concerned about my kids, but I’m the father, you’re not the father,” he said. “Let me make the decision for what I’m going to allow my kids to play on.” Glenbard West parent Matt Halkyard, who coaches youth football and is involved with youth lacrosse, said grass facilities have limited capacity, particularly during bad weather, and the turf field will increase the amount of games at Newton Park for lacrosse by more than 50 percent. “Having field turf there I think will only enhance the experience for not only our families but also our guests” Halkyard said. “It would be a great promotional tool for our community as well as economic benefit to local shops in the areas.” Ultimately, the board agreed it should have communicated the plans for the field more efficiently to local residents. They also had conflicting feelings on the use of synthetic turf, though most said the demand needs to be met, money has already been put into the project and the benefits outweigh the risks. Board member Jay Kinzler said it should ultimately be the parent’s decision whether they want to allow their child to play on synthetic turf. He also said the research on the harmful effects is not conclusive enough to indicate the turf puts children’s health at risk. “There is risks everywhere you go in life – you have to weigh the benefits against the risks,” he said. “[In this situation] the benefits very much outweigh the risks.”

ence in Glen Ellyn.” The church has a long history since being officially appointed a parish June 1, 1965. It held its first official Mass June 4, 1965, at Maryknoll Church while St. James was being completed. The church and accompanying school were finished in 1967. According to Gilligan, the idea for the parish grew rapidly after the Diocese of Joliet saw a need for another Catholic church in the Glen Ellyn area and began collecting from various parishes every Sunday to help purchase the land where St. James now stands. They asked churchgoers to give 10 percent of their income to God so they

could finance building the church and school. The diocese also appointed the Rev. Thomas Fleming to the church. Many of the original members of the church were part of an increase in families and workers moving to the suburbs and an influx of residents on the south side of Roosevelt Road and other parts of town farther from a designated church. Right away, the parish provided a sense of community and an opportunity for new locals to practice their faith and meet other members, Gilligan said. She believes one of the qualities that has attracted people to the church is the parish’s emphasis on outreach

GLEN ELLYN – St. James the Apostle Parish is marking 50 years of service to the Glen Ellyn community with a full slate of activities to celebrate the milestone. Since last summer, the church has hosted several events honoring the anniversary, including an ice cream social, days of service and a dinner dance. The festivities will culminate with two upcoming events. The parish will host an anniversary concert with members of the St. James Music Ministry at 4 p.m. May 17 at the church, 480 S. Park Blvd. A 50th anniversary Mass with Bishop R. Daniel Conlon of the Diocese of Joliet will cap off the celebrations at 11:30 a.m. May 31, with a reception to follow. Longtime St. James member Lisa Gilligan, who edits the parish bulletin, believes the church provides an opportunity for parishioners to form a bond with each other. “What’s cool about this parish is it’s kind of like it started where people here were taking care of each other,” she said. “It was about becoming family to one another [and] making a differ-
and its connection to faith. “The people here just love to give,” she said. “They don’t serve just to serve, it’s definitely connected to their faith. That’s the source of why they give, they are trying to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and that’s why they do it, to serve the Gospel. The Rev. David Hankus came to the church two years ago, having already served at a church that celebrated 50 years – St. Anne Parish in Oswego. Hankus helped start plans for the 50th anniversary in 2014. “I think it’s the people that really make up the church,” he said. “Anytime that I’ve asked for help with anything, people came forward almost immediately. This parish, I discovered that people know what it means to be Christian. Church is not just a one-hour-a-week activity, it’s your whole life” In terms of growth, the parish hopes that with demographics changing, the church will continue to prosper in its religious education, service and strong ties to the community. “I think we’re going to basically continue what we’ve always been doing,” Hankus said. “Listen to the Lord speak to us and just try to live out the Gospel in our daily lives. That never changes.”

nlurz@shawmedia.com The College of DuPage could be on its way to a “Clean Slate,” but the cleaning may not come too easy if the new Board of Trustee’s second meeting April 30 is any example. The board includes three new faces after the April election – Deanne Marie Mazzochi, Frank Napolitano and Charles Bernstein – united under a shared platform of reform and behind newly selected Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton. With the majority of the seven-member board on lock, the four pushed through an aggressive special meeting agenda the three remaining trustees consistently voted against, citing a lack of transparency and inclusion in its drafting.
Breuder out Early in the meeting, the board addressed one of the biggest elephants in the room: President Robert Breuder. The controversial leader has been in the limelight for months, first for a leaked email in July 2014 that advised trustees to find “politically attractive” ways to spend $20 million in state funding promised to the school. His tenure

Breuder beat the board to his proposed ouster, announcing April 28 he would be taking medical leave, but trustees still put him on administrative leave with pay during the meeting. New college attorney Tim Elliott, who also serves as a Glen Ellyn village trustee and has been involved in cases against the college twice in the past year, said the move gave the board control over the timing of Breuder’s return. College trustee Joseph Wozniak said he was voting down the measure not just in protest of lack of transparency, but also because he was “not going to kick a man when he’s down.”

The importance of Some sour notes mar good learning to swim during childhood moves by new COD board OUR VIEW
If you were hoping the new majority on the College of DuPage Board of Trustees would hit the ground running at their first meeting, starting the process of repudiating all the controversial decisions we’ve seen out of the school in the past year, then you were likely thrilled with what you saw at the April 30 meeting. If you felt, though, the winners from the April 7 election should allow the outgoing board members to recede into obscurity with at least a little bit of dignity, well, that didn’t happen. Some strife is inevitable. The three holdovers from the previous board lineup who represent the former majority aren’t likely to support the four members, led by new Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, in many of their efforts to roll back all of those bad decisions. There are going to be a lot of 4-3 votes, as there were April 30. Putting its stamp on President Robert Breuder’s medical leave by voting to put him on administrative leave – good. Now, he can’t declare his medical leave ended and go back to work at any time he pleases. Moving forward with a state-run audit of the college’s finances – also good. We need clarity on whether the college has been a good steward of tax dollars and students’ tuition. Hiring temporary legal counsel for the board that had previously represented Hamilton – an eyebrow raiser for sure. What was decidedly not good was the political theater around the awarding of “certificates of appreciation” for outgoing board members Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda. New Vice Chairwoman Deanne Marie
Courtney O’Kray is the marketing and communications supervisor of the Glen Ellyn Park District.
Suburban Life Media Editorial Board Laura Burke, Dave Lemery, Matt Hendrickson, Anna Schier, Alex Soulier, Mary Beth Versaci
Mazzochi, part of the “Clean Slate” of candidates that bested Savage and Svoboda at the polls, questioned whether passing the resolutions of appreciation was legally binding and could have an impact on ongoing investigations of the school. To an observer, this line of questioning seems like a mean-spirited dig rather than a sincere concern. Apparently it wasn’t sufficient to have defeated Savage and Svoboda at the polls, to have been given a mandate from voters that sweeping change was needed on the board. Instead of being a gracious victor and moving on to clean up the mess made by previous leaders, we have an overt attempt to humiliate those who were defeated. It’s no surprise that Savage and Svoboda chose to leave before the official vote on the certificates. Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda took part in votes that were openly derided on this very opinion page, and were part of a former board that generally left the entire Chicago region scratching its collective heads trying to understand what was going on in Glen Ellyn. But surely there’s no harm in taking a moment to recognize their service, letting them have a moment of acknowledgment as their time as public servants came to a close. If the ongoing investigations point fingers in their direction, so be it. That’s another matter for another day. Being right on many, or even most, of the issues doesn’t give the new board majority carte blanche to treat the new minority, or anyone else, in a disrespectful fashion. There’s a lot to fix, but showing some decorum in the process would go a long way toward healing the wounds on campus, too.

If you are the parent of a young child or young children, you know how nerve-wracking it can be when a child who doesn’t know how to swim is near water. However, with the right instruction, even young children can participate in swim lessons, learn water safety and gain a love for water that will last a lifetime. May is National Drowning COMMUNITY Prevention Month, which makes it the perfect time to VOICE start thinking about the imCourtney portance of learning to swim. O’Kray The danger of drowning is real – not just for children, but for anyone who doesn’t know how to swim. The solution to not knowing how to swim is not to avoid swimming pools, lakes or oceans – it is to learn the skills to stay above water! Just a few of the reasons learning to swim is important include safety, the ability to help others and health benefits. Safety is the first and perhaps the most important reason to learn to swim. While nothing will ever eliminate the risk of drowning, if you are the parent of a child who doesn’t know how to swim, enrolling your child in lessons can make being around water much safer. When looking for swim lessons, speak with your physician before enrolling children and ensure that your swim instruction includes water safety and education at the appropriate developmental level. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 3,000 people drown in this country every year. When you know how to swim, you can not only prevent yourself from becoming part of that statistic, you can prevent others from becoming part of it. If a child, teenager or adult finds themselves out of their depth, knowing how to swim can enable you to help them back into shallower water. Swimming, once you know how, is one of the safest and most enjoyable forms of exercise. For those with joint issues or other conditions that makes normal exercise impossible, swimming can be an excellent replacement. Don’t live in fear of the water. Mastering the skills of swimming can benefit you throughout your life. If your child – or anyone else in your family – has not yet learned to swim, the Glen Ellyn Park District offers programs for all ages including parents/tots, young children, teenagers and adults.

Why pay landscaping firm? Could somebody please tell us why we are paying a landscaping firm to cut the lawn and manicure it on the Park District on Linden Street when the [Glen Ellyn] Park District building is only six blocks down on Kenilworth [Avenue]? It just seems strange that we have to hire an outside contractor to maintain that lawn for a building and property [when] somebody from the Park District lives there.

Where would the dogs go? This is in response to the woman who is telling people to stop volunteering for adoption rescue animals. My rescue is not a brick-and-mortar rescue. We count on the kindness of foster homes and our veterinary offices. Many brick-andmortar rescues have paid staff and some volunteers. If you want to look, so be it, at the dogs in their kennels. The majority of breed rescue dogs are not in these facilities; they are individual rescues, breed specific. So, please, do not tell us to stop volunteering, or else where would these dogs go?
How does looting help issues surrounding police and crime? It seems like every time they have some officer shooting somebody, there’s always a riot. ... I can understand them taking out their anger on the police because they see them as the people who perpetrated the crime against their victim. But with this looting and everything, I just don’t understand how that plays into it. That’s why a lot of people don’t have sympathy for these people when something like this happens. They see all

This message is in regard to the woman who just wants to look at animals that are available for adoption. It’s not a zoo. If she wants to look at the animals, she can look on a website or go to the zoo. But, then again, she’d have to pay to get into the zoo.
Taking more and more away Hi, this is a rebuttal call to the person who said don’t blame the governor. We know that the state of Illinois has been in bad trouble through Democratic poor handling, however you want to call it. But when he comes into office and he starts cutting things – education, funding for pension that’s already been there, cutting the medical needs of people who are on disability, cutting college kids who get grants. ... Look at all the Republican states that are in dire straits because of their Republican governors. ... They just want to slash and make us pay more and take more and more away from us. That’s what he’s trying to do. He’s a venture capitalist, and he will always be one.
People are instigators of change I was just wondering why churches and towns don’t know that it is the people who determine what is done and that the people are the ones who are the instigators of change and that people should be consulted as to what changes are being done.

Even though it’s for a great cause, I can’t believe educated people are so stupid that they’ll let anyone who buys a ticket walk through their house. Maybe I’ll take some pictures, ask when they go on vacation, see if they have an alarm system and find out where they keep their valuables. This opportunity only takes place once a year, so criminals will need to take advantage of it. It’s amazing that some people in Glen Ellyn care more about being ostentatious than the security of their homes and family.

The west suburbs’ best and brightest were recognized recently by Suburban Life Media. Two area high school students received college merit-based scholarships at an awards reception April 30 at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge. Suburban Life partnered with DuPage Credit Union to award $2,000 scholarships to Downers Grove North High School senior Rachel Krusenoski and Downers Grove South High School senior Thomas Matysik. The winners were chosen based on academic performance, character and commitment to volunteer work and extracurricular activities, and beat out 48 other students who were given certificates of recognition as Suburban Life Scholars. Event organizer Kelly Buchanan saw the reception as an opportunity to celebrate the community. “Events like this bring our community together. We are able to recognize the good and share that with the community,” Buchanan said. “Basically, it’s kind of pay-it-forward.” The selection process for the awards started in September and continued through March. Suburban Life newspapers routinely publish profiles of five to eight students nominated by teachers, counselors and other leaders. A selection committee including representatives from Suburban Life Media and DuPage Credit Union then graded each student based on academic achievement, community involvement and extracurricular participation to determine who would win the coveted scholarships. The two winners, both nominated by their counselors, were shocked after seeing the amount of qualified nominees. Krusenoski – who has a 4.5 GPA and is involved in the school newspaper, as well as varsity cross country and track – believes it was her ability to focus only on activities she could put her heart into that helped elevate her to attain the scholarship. “Everything I try to pursue in these last four years is something I pursued with passion,” Krusenoski said. “In doing so I was able to put in a lot of effort and a lot of heart into what I was doing.” Matysik – who has an ACT score of 35, is on the baseball team and is involved with Peer Leaders and National Honor Society – was initially unsure what made him stand out but attributes his success to participating

The board also moved on several looming issues regarding legislation and legal action against the school April 30. After months of foot-dragging, trustees authorized a state-run audit of the school’s finances from 2009 to 2014 by the Illinois Auditor General’s Office. Earlier this year, several members of the General Assembly asked for the audit, including state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton. Ives originally gave the college a March 12 deadline to accept terms for an audit dating to 2011 and agree to pay for the estimated $144,000 to $234,000 project. The board also authorized an internal investigation into the college’s accounts April 30, directed staff to provide the board and college’s client files from several law firms, and formalized a litigation hold in light of the federal investigations against the school. Additionally, it hired new temporary legal counsel – Elliott’s Rathje & Woodward and Schuyler, Roche & Crisham – for the board. Both were retained to guide the board during the next four months, although the three old guard trustees questioned the latter’s hire, as one of its attorneys, Dan Kinsella, represented Hamilton after the board censured her last year.

The board has previously received criticism about lavish spending accounts held by Breuder and trustees, including several thousand dollars spent at campus restaurant Waterleaf, but it moved April 30 to suspend all travel and entertainment reimbursements for trustees, as well as all “house” accounts on or off campus. When several trustees voiced concern, particularly student trustee Gloria Roark, Hamilton said the board would evaluate each case individually and that it represented a stop until the board looked over its policies. The board also hired a transition team led by Donald Haider, professor of strategy at the Kellogg School of Management. The team will guide new board members and possibly interim administrative leadership through the legal action against the college and recommend ways to improve operations and governance. Hamilton said she was already looking at filling it with volunteer local stakeholders from across the district.

Hinsdale, Illinois- April 29, 2015. Danielle Procopio of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, Hinsdale, was recently recognized as a Certified Staging Consultant (CSC) by the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors®. This certification educates Realtors® in recognizing other attractive alternatives to reach a sale for their clientele, both the seller and/or buyer. It also teaches Realtors® how to incorporate an array of staging services into their client service portfolio. From personally consulting the seller on identifying and enhancing the features of a property from curbside to back fence to teaching the seller to “declutter” the home or, if all fails, incorporating an array of professional staging services to assist in the process. According to a recent study by RESA, the Real Estate Staging Association, a staged home spends 73% less time on the market and can typically bring in

Red Stars Down Sky Blue FC 1-0 in World Cup Send-Off Colaprico scores first professional goal as Chicago stays unbeaten in 2015 Chicago, Illinois – – The National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) Chicago Red Stars dominated and stayed unbeaten in their third match of the 2015 campaign on Saturday, defeating Sky Blue FC 1-0 behind rookie midfielder Danielle Colaprico’s first tally of her professional career. While the visitors from New Jersey were without all of their World-Cupbound players, the home match served as the Send-Off event for five of the eight Chicago stars who will be competing in this summer’s tournament in Canada. The Red Stars put pressure on their opponents early and created the first close look in the 5th minute, as defender Taryn Hemmings sprinted up the right wing and sent a dangerous ball to the far post. Teammate Vanessa DiBernardo was unfortunate to see her header from a tight angle sail just over the frame. A mere four minutes later, the hosts’ aggressive approach nearly paid off, DiBernardo coming close to stripping goalkeeper Brittany Cameron of the ball for what would have been a certain tally. Chicago had its next quality chance moments later. Former Virginia standout Colaprico sent Lori Chalupny down the left and the 31-year-old’s centering pass seemed destined to be tapped home at the doorstep. Instead, it evaded both defenders and attackers, trickling just wide of the far post. Red Stars striker Christen Press, who came into the game as the newly crowned NWSL Player of the Month for April, had two opportunities to open the scoring in the 18th minute. After her left-footed attempt from 20 yards out forced a diving save, Press got back on the ball and fired just high from inside the penalty area. She caused havoc once again halfway through

the first period, this time courtesy of Chalupny, who flew down the left and saw her low firsttime cross rifled just wide by Press. After an uneventful finish to the opening period, Chicago came out of the break with renewed urgency, and the persistence finally paid off in the 54th minute. Having hit teammate Julie Johnston in the face on her initial blast from just inside the box, Colaprico did everything right on the rebound, smashing a left-footed rocket past the outstretched arms of Cameron to make it 1-0. The crowd at Benedictine University subsequently had to wait until 15 minutes from full time for another quality opportunity, Chicago’s Chalupny exploding into the box on the left and rifling a laser beam on target that was guided over the bar by the fingertips of Cameron. Red Stars goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc made her best stop of the match in the 86th minute, leaving her feet and diving to her right to deny Hayley Haagsma’s dangerous header off an in-swinging free-kick from the wing. Cara Walls nearly sealed the deal for the hosts in stoppage time, as she found herself one-on-one with netminder Cameron, who pounced on a lapse in concentration to defuse the threat. It would be the day’s final close look, as the home side earned its second win of 2015. The Chicago Red Stars look to earn three more points when they take on Boston Breakers this coming Saturday in a doubleheader with MLS outfit Chicago Fire at Toyota Park in Bridgeview. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

vinaigrette. Grilled asparagus and pearl couscous were perfect complements. I am not normally a fan of fish (or asparagus, for that matter), but even I was impressed with the dish and the way it was presented. I set aside my desire for the bacon-and-blue-cheese-infused hamburger with truffled mayo and sampled the Cuban sandwich. The fresh ground mustard worked well with sweet pickles and the smokiness of the pork, all encased in a perfectly toasted Cuban roll, akin to French bread. For dessert, we tried the salted caramel cheesecake. It looked so much like ice cream we thought it would be cold, but it was light, fluffy and sweet with the right amount of salted caramel flavor on top of a toasty graham cracker crust. As chef Irvine noted on “Restaurant Impossible,” the food at Zest has always been

DOWNERS GROVE – A star turn on the Food Network show “Restaurant Impossible” spotlighted Lemon Tree Grocer in Downers Grove and the Zest Bistro located within, where the food has always been center stage. Celebrity chef Robert Irvine, host of the television program, said it was one of just a few times in years of filming the show that he actually enjoyed the food served at the outset. That’s high praise from a well-regarded chef who never hesitates to call it like he sees it. That there was nothing wrong with the menu in the first place was confirmed when my date and I recently paid a visit to Zest. Though we were both hungry, we asked our waiter to give us more time to peruse the choices, because every item sounded delectable. Before picking entrees, we decided to appease our appetites by ordering the short rib nachos appetizer. Thick and crunchy tortilla chips were the foundation for a great blend of flavors that ranged from the sweetness of the beef to the tang of Cotija cheese sauce and lime horseradish crema, with a hint of spiciness from fresh green chilies. We paired our appetizer with beverages. My date picked a beer from an impressive list of offerings by independent breweries, while I chose the Dark and Stormy Mule served in a copper mug. The rum-based drink did a dance on my taste buds with simple syrup and ginger beer leading the tango. Irvine’s signature pot roast, introduced to the menu after his recent visit to Downers Grove, must be a fan favorite, as Zest had just served the last of a roast made a bit earlier in the day and was in the process of cooking a second. My companion was slightly disappointed not to be able to try the dish, but that changed when her salmon entree arrived. The perfectly cooked fillet was coated in a honey mustard glaze and served with a sweet and savory orange mustard

Tables turn as Glenbard South loses late By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard South’s baseball team had scored in the late innings to record its previous three victories. On Monday, the tables were turned on the Raiders. Leading 5-0 after five innings, Glenbard South watched as Aurora Central Catholic plated five runs in the sixth frame and added three more in the seventh to prevail 8-6 in the Metro Suburban Conference contest. “We’ve done that to some other people too, so turnabout is fair play,” Glenbard South coach Mike Riley said. Up until that point, Brian Ashe had yielded just one hit to the Chargers.

But he walked three in the sixth before departing. Offensively, the home team scored two runs in the second and three more in the third. Tim Marks and Dylan Brambora drove in two runs apiece and Joey Atkinson had a hit and RBI. Kyle Carli hit a solo home run in the seventh. The loss was the team’s fourth in league play, dropping them three games behind ACC, Wheaton Academy and Riverside Brookfield. Glenbard South was coming off a 9-7 victory against Oswego East in eight innings May 2. Carli and Andrew Wrona had three hits and two RBIs apiece, while Atkinson had a home run and two RBIs. On April 30, the squad beat Elm-
wood Park 3-2 after scoring all of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Alex McGimpsey and Michael Ashe each had RBIs and Brian Ashe had a pair of hits. Fabian Garcia struck out six and gave up one earned run in 5 2/3 innings. “It doesn’t matter if it is one of the weaker teams in the league or one of the better teams in the league,” Riley said. “We either win it at the end or unfortunately [on Monday], we lost it at the end. We’ve been in every game.”
Glenbard West The Hilltoppers salvaged the final contest of their three-game set against York, notching an 8-2 decision Monday. Alex Martenson, Will Simoneit and Arno Curtis all had two hits while

Simoneit, Curtis and Billy Becker drove in two runs apiece. Sam Kaske worked six innings to record the victory on the mound, allowing five hits. Glenbard West had lost 18-4 to the Dukes on May 2 despite home runs from Simoneit and Curtis. A day earlier, they dropped a 6-3 decision in the opening game of the series in a contest that was tied 2-2 heading into the seventh. Justin O’Neal struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings while Simoneit hit another home run. On April 30, Glenbard West beat Addison Trail 8-3 as Matt Shoub went 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Curtis and Jack Tecson each had two hits apiece while Ryan Coleman allowed no earned runs in a complete-game performance.

Glenbard West’s Rachel Terwilliger catches a fly ball April 17 in a game against Wheaton North. The Hilltoppers struggled in a tough doubleheader test Saturday against Downers Grove South.

Hilltoppers learn from losses against Mustangs By DAVE OWEN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com GLEN ELLYN – Facing Downers Grove South has been a challenge for every softball team this spring. Glenbard West was the latest victim in a 12-1, 14-0 doubleheader sweep Saturday, but Hilltoppers’ coach Mary McGrane hopes facing the Mustangs (22-0) was a good learning experience. “I love playing Downers Grove South because I respect Rondo [Mustangs coach Ron Havelka] and his program,” McGrane said. “It shows our girls, especially the ones new to varsity, what we strive for and where we want to be.” A six-run first inning for DGS essentially decided the first game. Offensively for Glenbard West (7-13), Rachel Terwilliger and Shelley Warmolts were each 1 for 2. The Hilltoppers’ run came in the third inning when Amanda Posegay was hit by a pitch and later scored on an error. In the second game, Downers South scored three runs in the first inning and five in the second to pull away. “I thought [pitcher] Caylin Potter settled in eventually [in the first game],” McGrath said. “On the mound with Caylin and two freshmen it’s about getting them the exposure and getting them to understand the purpose of hitting their spots and changing speeds. “I don’t want them beating themselves up over this. That’s a great hitting team.” The Mustangs also threw future Division I college pitchers in each game, making for a doubly challenging day.
Downers South sophomore Payton Buresch pitched a perfect game in the second game, which ended on a nice sliding catch in center field off sophomore Katherine Porter’s low line drive. Porter also flew out deep to right field earlier in the game. “I expect it from Katherine, but it’s nice to see her getting good, quality atbats,” McGrane said. “And Caylin’s really stepped it up. Rachel at shortstop and my catcher [Warmolts] are our only two returning varsity starters. They’ve played well.” A roster of four freshmen or sophomores and just three seniors bodes well for the future, and the Hilltoppers look to finish 2015 strong. “I’m hoping we can find some consistency from here on out,” McGrane said. “We’ve been very up and down. And the girls have the potential. It’s getting them to believe it. Believe in yourselves and stay committed to each other. Then good things can happen.”
Glenbard South The Raiders picked up a 3-1 win against Sandburg on Monday behind the pitching combo of Taylor Carli and Ashley Cohen. Carli allowed no hits in three frames while Cohen gave up four hits in four innings. Payton Carli topped the offense with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. On Saturday, the squad beat Morton 15-6 as Mina Marra went 4 for 4 with an RBI. Tricia Weigand tallied three hits, and Mady Carli, Payton Carli and Cohen had two hits apiece. Taylor Carli threw 4 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing no hits while striking out six.
The Glenbard West boys gymnastics team captured first place at the West Suburban Silver conference meet Saturday with a score of 144.70. Eric Samuta came in first on the pommel horse (7.80) and also won on vault (9.10). Viktor Kovalishin was the runner-up on the vault, Adam Samuta placed third on the rings, Matthew Ideler was fourth on the pommel horse and Adam Grimm finished fourth in the parallel bars.
GYMNASTICS Glenbard South Competing in the Independent Conference meet April 29, the Raiders compiled a score of 127.05. Eric McGovern was sixth in the all-around competition with a 44.80 and third in floor exercise with an 8.75.

The 4x400 grouping of Hecht, Andrew Lindstrom, Jaskowiak and Ross Adreski took third. Eric Nuemann added a runner-up showing in the 3,200, Mohamad Gborie was third in the 200 and Buechner placed third in the 1,600.
Glenbard South Jack Curtis posted two runner-up showings and one third-place finish at the Jim Arnold Classic on Saturday. Curtis was second in both the 100and 200-meter dashes while coming in third in the high jump. Jonathon Walker was sixth in the 800.
