By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – As Glenbard Township High School District 87 finishes the first year of its 1-to-1 iPad deployment program, officials are considering the success of the program, as well as future goals moving forward. The program required all freshman-level students to rent an iPad from the district or bring one from home. The 12-month iPad rental fee cost students $189, including mandatory insurance. An additional $85 fee covered digital curriculum and applications, with the final cost coming to $274. Director of Instructional Technology Robert Lang, who presented data on the program’s first year to the Board of Education during a May 26 meeting, was enthusiastic about what he saw. “It’s our first attempt at online learning, so it’s exciting the things we learn along the way,” he said. The data Lang presented examined how 2,500 students used the learning management system Schoology in conjunction with their iPads through the year. Overall, the application saw 545,863 visits from students, with 52,428 com-

ments posted, 126,654 submissions made and 119,332 files uploaded, according to district documents. “This is a good indication that there is collaboration happening ... It shows us that they’re interacting and using it,” Lang said. The district also tracked application use during nonpeak learning times, such as inclement weather days and winter and spring breaks, in an effort to see if students consistently engage in learning by using the iPad. The data presented showed lower use during breaks but an uptick during the final days before school started

again after time off. This is normal and expected, according to Lang, who is interested in seeing if students are engaged in learning with their mobile devices on off days, with the goal of 24/7 learning in mind. Overall, Lang said the district is already seeing benefits with the program. Math students can record the steps they use to solve a problem, which makes it easier for teachers to see their work. In science, students can hook up an iPad to a microscope to take and label pictures instead of sketching them. In physical education, teachers can spend less time demonstrating weight lifting equipment, instead offering videos on how to use the equipment, which gives the teacher more one-on-one time to help students. Superintendent David Larson agreed the iPad program is beneficial for students and is an obvious learning component. “[There is] actual real, deep learning that can take place because the student can be independent, connect with more students and do more research in ways that they couldn’t do before,” Larson said. “[Technology] permeates our lives no matter what sector of work you’re in ... so why would you not have students and teachers have access to those tools?” Lang said most students enjoy using the iPad and understand the distinction between social life and school life with regard to using the device. He did say, however, that teaching students to self-regulate technology use will be a challenge going forward. This summer, about 190 students will participate in an online self-paced math remediation program monitored by district math teachers. The goal of the program is to support struggling math learners by having them watch videos, do assignments and take quizzes to help them prepare for geometry and chemistry classes. Next year, the iPad program will branch out to include both freshmenand sophomore-level students. By 2017, all district students will have an iPad for instructional use. The school is phasing in the program through different grade levels to stagger teacher training while also making sure curriculum is digitized for each grade, according to Lang. “We’re seeing some growth. I’m confident that we’re doing it right as I look at some other school districts that are giving all students iPads at the same time. And they’re not building as much capacity going forward, mostly because it is an overwhelming task,” Lang said. The next step for the school will be to look at blended learning, in which students would not have to report to the same classroom space five days a week, but could spend more time independently studying or in a group outside of class, according to Lang.

GLEN ELLYN – A group of Glen Ellyn veterans were honored this week with a celebration of service in the District of Columbia. Brookdale Senior Living Center in Glen Ellyn saw 15 residents, who are World War II veterans, participate in Honor Flight Chicago. Honor Flight Chicago is a nonprofit organization founded to recognize World War II veterans in the Chicago area by flying them all-expenses paid to the nation’s capital for a day of honor, remembrance and celebration. The organization’s volunteers work year-round to raise money for the flights. The Glen Ellyn veterans’ flight took off at 4 a.m. June 3 at Chicago Midway International Airport. Upon arrival in the District, they had a chance to see the Washington Monument, the National World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the National Air and Space Museum. Brookdale held a celebration June 2 recognizing the 15 veterans for their service. This is the first year the center has sent residents to take part in Honor Flight, according to nurse Cheryl Kinczyk. “I think it brings back memories – good, bad or otherwise – they are so proud to serve,” she said. “The fact that they are being recognized for it, they are filled with pride.” The festivities at Brookdale kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance and a performance of “Star-Spangled Banner” by Bugles Across America bugler Gene Vanden Bosch. American Legion Post 3 of Glen Ellyn and representatives from the Great Lakes naval base were also on hand to raise flags and salute the veterans during the national anthem. Brookdale resident Herb Leavitt, who previously has participated in Honor Flight’s program, spoke about

Veiled by ChaCha finds new home on Crescent Boulevard By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Bridal boutique Veiled by ChaCha is saying “I do” to a new location in downtown Glen Ellyn. The Glen Ellyn staple for all things wedding-related, including dresses, sashes and, of course, veils, moved at the end of April from 524 Duane St. to 494 Crescent Blvd. The shop upgraded from a 900-square-foot location to its new 2,200-square-foot space. “It’s just a whole different feeling,” owner Antonietta Ciaccia Cervantes said. “I’m a city girl, so I love the whole open ceilings and the loftiness.” The new location has a front desk greeting area, larger fitting rooms, a bridal party seating space and a bigger back section to store more gowns. The walled-off sectioning of various areas within the store offers an intimate experience for brides, according to Cervantes. “I think it’s more privacy for the customers,” she said. “They didn’t have any privacy at [the Duane Street] location. It was all in the open.” Cervantes will continue to offer her custom-made accessories, such as headpieces, jewelry and more, to go

Veiled by ChaCha owner Antonietta Ciaccia Cervantes is ready to greet customers May 21 at the reception area of her new location at 494 Crescent Blvd. with the bridal gowns. Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn Executive Director Carol White said the wedding boutique is important to Glen Ellyn’s vitality and draws brides from all over to experience the charms of the village, with some even deciding

to start their lives in Glen Ellyn. “Antonietta’s expertise in custom veils and bridal fashion is one of our strongest assets and to see her expand is a great sign of the health of our town,” White said. Before opening her own shop, Cer-

vantes was a regional manager and designer for Priscilla of Boston. She designed the business’s veil collection and managed 19 different stores in the Midwest and West Coast. After having dinner one night with her husband in downtown Glen Ellyn and seeing an open storefront, Cervantes thought it would be fun to have her own place with her customized veils and accessories. Cervantes is a wholesaler and her veils typically range from $250 to $2,500. The new location on Crescent Boulevard will give her more room to display the wedding dresses along with her accessories. Another benefit of the new space is that it does not have a basement, which was a nuisance at the Duane Street shop, because it required hauling dresses up and down stairs, according to Cervantes. The new location also has a private parking lot. Helping brides with their wedding attire has proved rewarding for Cervantes, and she said she has no plans of slowing down and hopes to continue to expand. “I’ve been doing it for 28 years and I never get tired of it,” Cervantes said. “I love creating beautiful things and I love working with the brides.”

Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Summer Projects and Activities As Memorial Day is the unoicial start of summer, the warm sunny air draws millions of adults and children outside. Recreational activities such as use of power tools, irecrackers, irearms, motorcycles, attending music concerts, NASCAR, sporting events, have Dr. Terri Lightbody one thing in common: (630) 580-5777 noise. While noise itself isn’t bad, excessively loud noise is bad for the hearing. Warning signs from noise: •

You hear ringing or buzzing in your ears ater exposure to noise.

You notice that you can hear people talking but you have diiculty understanding them ater exposure to noise.

You experience “fullness” in your ears ater leaving a noisy area.

Even though you may have experienced these symptoms in the past, your hearing might not always “recover”, leaving you with a permanent hearing loss. hese types

of hearing losses typically show up several years ater the noise exposure. What you can do to protect your hearing: •

With recreational activities that have loud noise levels, wear ear protection such as earplugs. Earplugs come in custom or non-custom styles. Noncustom type foam plugs are available at pharmacies and at hearing clinics. Custom ear plugs with specialized attenuation ilters are available at a hearing clinic. Limit exposure to noisy activities around the home. Children and adults using personal listening devices such as iPods, MP3 players that use earbuds should have their devices monitored for loudness levels. A key test for unsafe listening levels from earbuds or headphones is if someone is able to overhear the wearer’s music, then most likely the listening level is too loud.

Hearing loss from noise is preventable. Monitor your hearing and be aware of potentially loud noises. If you experience any of the above symptoms or have questions, call our oice.

Be wary; deep education cuts might never heal Want to know how legislators get through the gridlock of state budget woes and policy reform proposals? Visit a local meat factory and watch sausage being made. Yes, the legislative process is a grinding, messy, mysterious and an unbecoming process. Our elected leaders are in closed-door meetings debating, negotiating, compromising and again figuring out how to patch a multibillion-dollar budget hole for next fiscal year. For public education interests, through the years, our elected officials have been kicking the can down the road by diverting revenue that should have funded the normal cost of retirement benefits to fund other interests and projects. The decades of mismanagement has resulted in many school districts finding themselves in a position where they must borrow annually to meet expenses. In reflecting on our state’s taxing history, did Illinois, for decades, have an imbalance between revenue growth and services cost growth? Was our tax policy, which was heavy on property taxes but light on business, service and income taxes, really suitable for a modern economy? Review other state taxing structures that are thriving economically and you will observe a balance of reductions and revenue enhancements. Minnesota, for example, is enjoying a billion-dollar surplus because of its disciplined, sustained investment in education and key social services.

COMMUNITY VOICE David Larson While our lawmakers scheme a property tax freeze, pension cost shift to local school districts and reduced General State Aid to school districts, it’s paramount they be creative and divergent in their thinking. Ralph Martire, executive director of the Chicago-based Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, outlines a path for fair revenue enhancements. They include: • Consider marginally increasing the personal income tax rate from the current 3.75 to 4.25. This would be similar to the rates in other states. • Expand the sales tax to include consumer services. This would be fair and consistent across sectors. • Reamortize the pension debt from 30 to 43 years. This would provide immediate relief. • Begin taxing retirement income on a graduated scale. Again, this would be consistent with other states. As any smart businessperson knows, arriving at a balanced budget through only cuts will harm your enterprise. Again, a growing and thriving modern economy will need a balance of restructuring and investing. Let’s hope our lawmakers realize this.

Heroin’s deadly reign affects us all It’s easy to think of heroin addiction as something that happens to other people, other families. Especially if you and your children have made it through the teen years and early adulthood without coming under the thumb of addiction. But even if no one in your immediate circle had even tried heroin, it still affects you in ways that are almost impossible to see. Maybe your favorite cashier at the grocery store just isn’t there one day, and you never know why. Maybe a local business you frequent shuts down out of the blue. Maybe a friend or a colleague becomes distant for no apparent reason, no longer hosts gatherings, no longer talks with pride about what the kids are doing. Cook and DuPage counties have seen a decline in heroin-related deaths thanks to the use of Narcan to combat overdoses. From 46 deaths in 2013, to 33 last year, DuPage County is on track for about 27 this year. Cook County’s drop was less significant, from 275 in 2013 to 283 in 2014. Regardless, if those declines are because of the success of Narcan,

VIEWS Dave Lemery then it means that the root problem – the use of heroin – may not have subsided at all. And there are many terrible outcomes for a heroin addict other than death. If your child is still in high school, but you know he or she is “one of the good kids” and would never use any kind of drugs, consider this: Every student in every high school knows who the “bad kids” are. If your model student has a weak moment, how hard would it be to get a hold of something truly devastating? I’m not looking to incite fear or convince every parent that their child is a secret dope fiend. Far from it. The miracle is that most teens, knowing full well how they could get their hands on some truly toxic substances, choose not to do so at a time in their life when they’ve got all kinds of pressures pushing them to make bad decisions. These are just a few of the obvious ways that heroin

abuse continues to affect all of us. And it’s going to continue to do so for a long time. That’s why Suburban Life has launched a new home online to collect our coverage of the heroin crisis in the suburbs. Visit and bookmark www.mysuburbanlife.com/ heroin to keep informed about what’s going on across the Chicago area. You’ll find stories about people who’ve been arrested, about families trying to make sense of lost loved ones, about government officials and police departments trying to find a way to make headway against this scourge. What we hope most is that as time goes by, you’ll find less and less news posted to the page as the heroin crisis recedes. But we know that isn’t going to happen anytime soon. In the meantime, we’ll continue to talk about the folks who are grappling with this issue. Because the sooner we accept that this is a problem that we all share, the sooner we’ll find solutions.

U. S. Rep. Dan Lipinski may have no ill will toward the public, but like all politicians, he’s not telling the whole story. Upkeep of the public transportation system … is the responsibility of the transit companies and is worked into the fare you pay to ride the bus or train. Over the years, more and more maintenance was deferred in favor of bigger and bigger salaries for the administrators of the transit companies. … Don’t be fooled, transit riders, you already paid for maintenance. Don’t let politicians tell you that you need to pay yet a second time for the same maintenance that you have already paid for with your fare to ride.

Mowers and blowers make too much summer ruckus I just wanted to Sound Off about the sounds of lawnmowers and leaf blowers and everything that goes on in the summer to create this loud motor noise that goes on every day. I know it’s summertime. I know lawns have to be mowed and grass clippings have to be blown off, but there’s no way to sit out in your yard anymore on your deck or your patio and just enjoy the breeze and enjoy nature without this motor noise going on constantly at such loud decibels. I’m just wondering if it bothers anybody else or if it’s just me.

Bike riders need to stay on bike paths and off the roads This is in response to the person who was worried about cars getting in the bicycle lanes, it’s the other way around.

People who ride bikes always get in the motorists’ ways. People who ride bikes need to stay on the bike paths and then they won’t have to worry about cars getting in their way. … You need to stay on the bike paths that [you] wanted so badly.

Fed up with feminism Growing up, I bought into the general point of feminism, but as I matured and began to see life right-side up I realize what a lot of destructive blather it is. … It’s sad … how the propaganda continues to infect our college campuses and media, with the vilest of things being done and said all on the basis of this wretched perspective. The damage continues.

Don’t hide head in the sand regarding heroin epidemic I lost my 21-year-old son to a heroin overdose 2 ½ years ago. Since that time, I put effort into spreading awareness, wherever and whenever I can about this highly addictive and deadly drug that plagues our community and children. We live in Lombard now, but my son was primarily raised in Elmhurst and attended grammar, middle and high school in Elmhurst. I was both saddened and angry to read in the article titled “DuPage officials warn heroin crisis not over” that only eight DuPage county schools are allowing Robert Crown to speak to their students about heroin. I urge the parents and schools out there not to put your head in the sand.

I share the concerns expressed by [Glen Ellyn] Village Trustees and residents over the proposed Opus Group redevelopment of the Giesche Shoes property and the adjoining village parking lot, which was given to Opus as an incentive. This massive, multiuse redevelopment of the village gateway includes a five-story commercial and residential building and an adjacent 339-space parking deck. The height would range from 53 to 61 feet, which makes the building actually six stories using the 10-feet-per-story measure employed by many cities. The building will dwarf the adjoining properties and come right up to the sidewalk on Main Street. A six-story building on the hill overlooking historic Main Street should not be allowed to happen.

Red Stars Remain Unbeaten with 0-0 Draw in Seattle Seattle, Wash. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars stayed undefeated in their first seven matches of the season courtesy of a hard-fought scoreless draw with home side and Shield holders Seattle Reign FC. Head Coach Rory Dames’ squad earned the valuable point behind disciplined team defending and a strong performance by netminder Michele Dalton, whose seven saves saw the 26-year-old earn her second shutout of the 2015 campaign. Seattle controlled possession early on and created the first promising chance in the 13th minute. Reigning league MVP Kim Little sprinted down to the byline on the left side and set up Danielle Foxhoven, whose mishit effort from inside the box found fellow attacker Merritt Mathias. The Alabama native failed to make full contact on the ball, her shot attempt being comfortably stopped by Dalton. Chicago’s Vanessa DiBernardo released a dangerous drive at the other end of the field in the 20th minute, a wicked deflection forcing goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer to leave her feet for a spectacular parry. Red Stars defender Michelle Lomnicki had her side’s best chance of the day on the ensuing DiBernardo corner from the right, as she headed the ball goalward with Kopmeyer out of the net, only to see it dramatically headed off the line by Reign FC’s Elli Reed. The home side had a pair of attempts during the remainder of the opening period, forcing solid saves from Dalton, who did well to avoid giving up rebounds.

After the break, both teams’ promising attacking efforts were well defended, as the fans had to wait until the 65th minute for another close look. Red Stars midfielder Danielle Colaprico swung in a corner kick from the left and Lomnicki got her head on the ball once more, this time seeing her close-range effort bounce just wide of the left post. Seattle nearly punished the visitors for the missed opportunity eleven minutes later, Mathias firing a rocket off the top the crossbar from a central position just outside the box. The home side would follow up with two more promising looks. First substitute Rachel Corsie’s dangerous 82nd-minute cross from the right flank was redirected just wide of the goal by the foot of a Chicago player, then forward Beverly Yanez beat netminder Dalton to the ball on the ensuing corner, just to see her header land on top of the unguarded frame. It was the final noteworthy opportunity of the match, as the Red Stars successfully fended off some furious Reign FC attacking in the final stages to hold on for a crucial point away from home. The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look to remain unbeaten through eight regular season games when they travel to take on Western New York Flash on June 6. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against second-place Washington Spirit. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

A couple of other problems are the uninviting pedestrian alley connecting Main Street with the parking garage and the fact that Hillside Avenue is [a] one-way [street]. Cars exiting the garage headed toward Roosevelt Road will be funneled onto residential streets. This exit will not be set back from the sidewalk, which is problematic for pedestrians and bicyclists. The Main Street apartments will have terraces that will be very visible. The other buildings with terraces in Glen Ellyn have a considerable setback with trees or shrubs hiding the furniture, barbecues and other items typically stored on terraces. The building’s footprint is a letter E with the prongs facing west. Simply flipping it 180 degrees so the courtyards faced Main Street would be a big improvement and hide most of the terraces.

The most important idea here is not the particular color — it can be dark or light — the most important factor is not to break up the space with high contrast.”

A bathroom must contain certain basics like a sink, toilet and bathing area, and often some extras like storage, lighting and mirrors, said interior designer Carla Aston. While repainting to make a room appear larger is one trick, the key is limiting the contrast, Aston said. “The most important idea here is not the particular color — it can be dark or light — the most important factor is not to break up the space with high contrast. Keep the wall and ceiling finishes all light or the same

To go bigger you might have to bring down some walls, said Jason Avery, owner of Avery Construction in Clearwater, Florida. “Often baths have a wall dividing the bathroom. Tear it down or just use a half wall to open up the space,” he said. Replace a shower wall or curtain with a clear, frameless glass door that will help lengthen the room, Avery said. Textured glass may ofer more privacy but also adds a visual barrier, Aston said. Clear glass is a better, more modern option. If a closet in an adjacent room backs up against the bathroom and

renovation is an option, Avery suggests “tearing out the closet and capturing the space.” Other renovations include reversing the bathroom door so it opens into the hallway rather than the bathroom, adding a pocket door, and replacing a bulky vanity with a shallow wall-hung or tower cabinet, Avery said.

Decor tricks Mirrors are well-known to enlarge a space, so go big. “Nothing makes a bathroom feel grander than a mirror that reaches to the ceiling,” Aston said. Use mirrors strategically: A mirror placed on a cabinet directly across from a window will make it appear the room has two windows in the same space, she said. Another idea is to put unused space to work by adding recessed, built-in shelving between the studs in a wall, Avery said. Open storage can be decorative and functional, while closed storage is needed for personal items. Lastly, think about the details and lighting. Trade out bulky fixtures for ones that are streamlined, and choose task lighting that gets the light exactly where you want it in a limited amount of space, Aston said.

s your bathroom too small? You’re not alone in thinking the space could be bigger. A recent survey conducted by faucet maker Moen found that almost half of respondents (45 percent) wish they could make their bathroom larger. If your bathroom is a cluttered and cramped closet rather than a serene spa-like space, you can enlarge it with either renovations or simple tricks. Remember, it’s not the size that matters but how you use it.

items all dark for a more expanding feel in the space,” said Aston, whose blog is DESIGNED w/Carla Aston, carlaaston.com. She also suggests blending the tile and wall color as well as taking the tile in the shower straight up to the ceiling for a feeling of expansiveness. Traditional vanities and cabinets are bulky and take up space. Instead, use pedestal sinks or a vanity designed to float on the wall for a more open feeling, Aston said. “You just recess the base of the cabinet about halfway under the vanity and tile it for a floating efect. It’s also good to keep the cabinet box at least about 9 inches of the floor when doing this type of cabinet,” she said.

ABOVE: Back Alley Burger puts an artisan spin on its quest to elevate the burger. In addition to the downtown La Grange home, the eatery also has an Elmhurst location. LEFT: A juicy patty is at the heart of the Make Shroom for Me Burger, a delicious item taken up a notch by a side of sweet potato fries. During my next visit, I decided I wanted to put my red meat cravings on the backseat for the sake of vegetarian readers, and ordered the veggie burger topped with avocado and tomato. Back Alley got points straight away for the clearly house-made patty instead of

the frozen black bean affair found in many places. It had a whole lot of mildly spicy complexity to it, but could have used more sear. I decided to go with the classic onion rings as my side this go-round, and, predictably, they were battered perfectly. Each had a uniform

amount of tasty breading with a nice crunch and plenty of welcome onion flavor. I knew I needed to sample one of the restaurant’s handspun shakes to truly tell the full story. The Nutella version was intensely chocolate and dangerously drinkable as opposed to milk shakes the

A lot of places do a decent burger, and a lot try to push the envelope of what a burger can be. Back Alley definitely does so with success, along with a friendly waitstaff quick to offer a suggestion, and a welcoming interior with rockand-roll appeal. If you’re going to put your burger fate in the hands of anyone, the people at Back Alley should be near the top of the list.

LA GRANGE – Grilling season is here, but consider leaving the burger production to the pros at Back Alley Burger in La Grange. The restaurant is the creation of veteran restaurateurs Mary and Christopher Spagnola of Western Springs, who first met at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. Their training is a big part of what sets Back Alley Burger apart, and their concept has expanded to a second location in Elmhurst. The pair’s hard-rocking La Grange restaurant has a big but focused menu offering a number of different burgers featuring grass-fed and never frozen beef, plus sandwiches, chili, nitrate-free hot dogs, salads, shakes, beer and wine, all served alongside street art decor and classic rock tunes. Inventive burger toppings and a theme alone do not a quality restaurant make, but, luckily, Back Alley Burger delivers. Though my imagination was caught by the Most Insane-est Hottest Burger Ever-est, filled with such ingredients as habanero jam, fried jalapeños, Thai chili cream cheese and something called Trinidad scorpion sauce, I decided to go with the less threatening Make Shroom for Me Burger. What came out was truly delicious. The patty itself was incredibly juicy without being greasy, and the pretzel bun it came on gave just enough structure to make sure the second half of the burger wasn’t soggy. Though it could have used a bit more of the namesake mushrooms, the grilled onions on top added an appreciated bite to the sandwich. A surprise was the caliber of the sweet potato fries. So many restaurants make a tremendous burger, but serve a pile of over-salted greasy fries alongside it. These were some of the best I’ve ever had. The thin fries had an amazing crispness to them that still had a mind-boggling amount of creamy sweet potato in the middle.

Players on Glenbard West’s bench celebrate the match-winning point June 2 in the Hilltoppers’ win against Glenbard East in the Oswego East sectional final.

Hilltoppers heading back to state finals By DAVE OWEN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com OSWEGO – For the second year in a row, Glenbard West’s volleyball seniors will get an extra special gift on graduation day. After finishing third at state last June, the Hilltoppers’ 25-18, 25-18 win against Glenbard East in the Oswego East sectional final June 2 has them at the cusp of another state trophy. “We’re getting better and better and they’re very focused in,” said Glenbard West coach Christine Giunta-Mayer, whose team faces Lake Park at 5 p.m. June 5 in the state quarterfinals at Hoffman Estates High School. “Friday is graduation for us and my seniors are missing graduation again, but we’ll figure it out.” Figuring out the balanced attack of the Hilltoppers (37-2) has been nearly impossible for opponents, and June 2 was no different. Beyond strong play from versatile setter Paulie Bischoff (26 assists, three blocks and six digs), solid numbers were put up by Kyler

Live video online

Kotsakis (eight kills, two blocks and seven digs), Jackson Nagle (seven kills) and Parker Swartz (six kills). Eric Button (two blocks) and Ryan Condon each had a team-high eight digs, and Will Church (three kills, two blocks) had the kill for match point. “There’s no one star player on this team,” Bischoff said. “Everyone contributes equally. This [return to state] means the world to us. We have great seniors and leadership.” Bischoff and Kotsakis were the elite players in the effort against Glenbard East. “Paul Bischoff makes it look easy,” Giunta-Mayer said. “Our passing was good today but wasn’t the best, but Paul made everything out of anything. And our hitters were smart with a lot of line shots today. “We played smart. Our block was extraordinary, and that allowed the defense to pick up some balls.” Kotsakis’ excellence in the sectional final included six service points in a row midway through game two that produced a decisive 20-13 Hilltopper lead. “The biggest improvement he’s made

is with his defense and his serve,” Giunta-Mayer said. “He’s doing it all. He’s able to place that serve better now.” Neutralizing the Rams’ serves also was big. “I thought we had really good serve receive,” Kotsakis said. “That’s what really sent us over the top. We have the offensive weapons that can do a lot of damage against their block if we run [our offense] fast. Passing and controlling the speed of the game really did it.” Kotsakis, Nagle, Swartz, Bischoff and Condon were all key players on last year’s state squad, which defeated Lake Park in the 2014 third-place match. “This team is very different from last year,” Giunta-Mayer said. “Last year we had a group that had never gone. Now we have some experience on our side. I think that will help us out. They know what it takes to get it done.” Bischoff sees one key to more state success. “We kind of lost focus after our first match last year, and to maintain that focus the whole time is really essential for us,” he said.

Glenbard West began the postseason with a 1-0, eight-inning victory against higher-seeded Conant on May 28. Michael Ashe and Alex McGimpsey singled in the frame before the Rebels committed three errors and a balk. The Raiders had opened the playoffs with a 10-1 win over Chicago Noble/Pritzker on May 27. Brian Ashe struck out 14 in a complete-game performance, yielding four hits. Offensively, Carli was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Robbie McGimpsey was 3 for 3 with two doubles. Alex McGimpsey, Brian Ashe and Tim Marks all had two hits.

CHARLESTON – Jack Curtis walked off the Eastern Illinois track for the final time May 30, two all-state medals wrapped around his neck. One of the biggest point scorers for Glenbard South in recent memory, the senior ended his stellar high school athletic career by placing in the top10 in a pair of Class 2A events. “It was a good way to go out. I’m happy for myself and I’m happy for my team and my coaches,” Curtis said. “I’m thankful that I got to run for such a great team.” Curtis was fourth at state in the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 7 inches for the first time in a meet this spring. “I’ve done it a couple of times in practice,” Curtis said. “I felt real good on that jump. It was great competition, three people cleared 6-8.” Soon after, he went out and placed eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.09 seconds. “It was a quick turnaround, but I felt good,” Curtis said. “It wasn’t a very good time but again, it was great competition.” A year ago, he came in sixth in the high jump and ninth in the 200. “It was a little different this year, I knew the ropes a little better,” Curtis said. “I focused more on what I had to do and I was able to do better.” Curtis will compete in track and football at Minneso-

ta State-Mankato. “They are both highly regarded teams,” he said, “and that will help make me better.” Sam Lee also advanced to Saturday’s finals and finished 10th in the pole vault after clearing 12-6. In addition, Andre Steiger and the 4x800 relay competed in preliminary races May 29. Steiger had a mark of 48-2.25 in the shot put while the relay quartet of Joey Wood, Andrew Sundberg, Jon O’Rourke and Jonathon Walker posted a time of 8:26.78.

Glenbard West Competing in the 3,200-meter run at the Class 3A IHSA state meet May 30, Eric Neumann came in 33rd place while Pau Christian followed in 41st. Neumann crossed in a time of 9:46.21 and Christian had a clocking of 9:57.33. The 4x800 relay team of Chris Buechner, Jake Jaskowiak, Nate Crail and Ben Hecht just missed out on all-state honors, placing 10th in 7:52.87. Top-nine finishers at state receive medals. In addition, the Hilltoppers had another relay and two individuals compete in the May 29 prelims. Jake Kravas crossed in 10.94 during the 100 dash, falling .15 seconds short of advancing to the finals. Mohamed Gborie had a time of 23.51 in the 200 and the 4x400 quartet of Hecht, Andrew Lindstrom, Vince Divenere and Ross Andreasik came in with a time of 3:23.97.

GLEN ELLYN – Things didn’t start out well for Glenbard South’s baseball team June 1 as starting catcher Kyle Carli was sidelined right before the Class 3A regional final because of a water bottle mishap. Things finished a lot better. Dan Opem made his first varsity appearance behind the plate in place of Carli, who swallowed a part of a water bottle before the game, and helped senior right-hander Dylan Brambora allow no earned runs in a 6-2 victory against Ridgewood. Opem caught the first six innings before Carli returned for the seventh. “We had some adversity at the start,” Glenbard South coach Mike Riley said. “But our kids stepped up and found a way to win.” With the win, the Raiders improved to 23-10 on the spring and advanced to the Nazareth sectional semifinal against Benet at 4:30 p.m. June 4. Brambora yielded two unearned runs in the fifth inning, which knotted the game at 2-2, but other than that, he was in full control during his complete-game outing, striking out eight while giving up only three hits. “My arm was feeling good the whole game and my curveball was more consistent than usual,” Brambora said. “I was able to throw it for strikes and I was letting my defense make plays. My shortstop [Andrew Wrona] had a fantastic game and my catcher did well, too. “It’s very exciting especially after last year, after our close loss last year [a 3-1 defeat to Montini in the regional

Pat McInerney has been a strong contributor for a record-breaking Illinois baseball team this spring.

Area products play in NCAA baseball tourney SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA A host of local players earned the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Division I tournament, beginning with regional action that wrapped up June 1. Wheaton North graduates Doug Hayes and Andrew Mamlic are a part of the University of Illinois baseball team, as is Glen Ellyn native Pat McInerney [Benet]. The Illini captured their first regional championship in program history with an 8-4 victory against Wright State and will face Vanderbilt in a best of three series starting June 6. The team also reached 50 wins for the first time in program history. McInerney has appeared in 53 games, starting 49, and is hitting .291 with 10 doubles, five home runs and 33 RBIs. Mamlic has appeared in 17 games on the mound, with a 2-0 record and has struck out 18 batters in 17 1/3 innings. Hayes has pitched in five contests and thrown five innings.

In his third consecutive trip to the IHSA state tennis tournament, Glenbard West junior Nate Dell had quite the showing. Dell ended up winning five matches before bowing out of the tournament in the sixth round of the consolation bracket. The junior opened with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Kobi Phillips of Belleville East before falling 6-3, 6-2 against Jack Randall of Lockport. Dell then rattled off four straight consolation bracket wins, including straight sets decisions against Mohammed Walji of Barrington and Tytus Metzler of Rockford Auburn. His final match was a 6-2, 2-6, [10-8] defeat against Mark Wu of Glenbrook North.

Raiders roll to another regional title SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard South’s softball team added another regional title to its collection after defeating St. Edward 10-4 in the Raiders’ own Class 3A regional May 30. The win made it 11 straight regional titles for the Raiders. The Raiders scored six runs in the second inning and were never threatened after that. Ashley Cohen went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and RBI, Vanessa Eichele drove in

a pair of runs and Payton Carli and Tricia Weigand each scored twice. Cohen threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball while Taylor Carli allowed two hits while striking out eight in 4 2/3 frames.
