mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Though the Village Board of Trustees has approved the necessary measures for construction of a science addition at Glenbard West High School to begin, a group of community members opposed to the project refuses to go down without a fight. The group, known as the Save Honey Hill Citizens, has created a petition to stop the eight-classroom addition and spoken out publicly against the project. So far the petition has gained about 2,000 signatures. The group is aiming for 2,500. The petition was launched June 4 on Change.org by Tom Condon, Mike Wilson and about 10 other concerned residents. “This was the quickest way to leverage to get the word out quickly,” Condon said. The construction would disrupt the land comprising Honey Hill, a pre-settlement wooded area, which, according to the petition, has gone largely untouched for centuries. One of the petitioners’ main concerns is preserving the George Zahrobsky Botanical Garden at the

It states the construction could lead to the destruction of about 200 trees that are more than 200 years old. The project exterior was rejected by the Architectural Review Commission on the grounds it required fine tuning, board documents state, but several requested zoning variations were approved by the Plan Commission. The three-story, 28,000-square-foot addition received unanimous approval by the board June 22 for its exterior; zoning variations related to the structure’s height, setback, drive-aisle width, and loading and parking space; and property line, right-of-way and easement adjustments. “I thought their variation requests were reasonable,” board President Alex Demos said. “These were the individual and very narrow decisions we

are deliberating on.” Demos also believes there is a possibility for compromise on the project. The petitioners suggest architectural plans for the addition can be revised and redrawn and that the destruction of 80 percent of the botanical garden trees is unnecessary. They recommend the addition be built up vertically, at a nominal cost, to avoid occupying any of Honey Hill. Chris McClain, Glenbard Township High School District 87’s assistant superintendent for finance and operations, said the school has been transparent in regard to its plans for the project, holding a community forum and discussing the addition at multiple commission meetings. The estimated cost for the addition is $12.5 million to $13.4 million, which will be funded through referendum bonds and the district’s operating budget. McClain said the district already has taken concerns into consideration and adjustments are being made, including a redefined patio space east of the addition that will save two large white oak trees, noise minimization and the addition of a plant rescue prior to construction. “If you look at the site, there aren’t many places to add on,” he said. “We are listening to the community. We’re trying to make as many adjustments as possible.” McClain said the district has done an extensive tree inventory beyond village requirements to ensure space is used efficiently. He said building vertically will not work based on village code and that the only way to build is out. The current plan for the addition exceeds village zoning code for height by nearly 13.5 feet, according to Village Board documents. McClain said the positive effect the project will have on students makes the construction worthwhile. “It’s going to be a fantastic addition to the school and our kids will be able to use it every single day in many different ways,” he said. McClain said that though Honey Hill will be downsized, it still will be there, and the addition has generated greater awareness about the site. The Save Honey Hill Citizens hope to meet with the district board to discuss compromises in advance of the board’s July 20 meeting. Construction is expected to start in August, with the addition on track to be in use by fall 2016.

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE

Commission postpones review of accreditation By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – A review of the College of DuPage’s accreditation has been delayed after the Higher Learning Commission postponed a trip to the school scheduled for June 29 and 30. The postponement was announced June 28 and was attributed to Jackson College President Daniel Phelan’s cancellation of his involvement with the College of DuPage accreditation review, according to a school news release. The college’s acting interim president, Joseph Collins, said in the release the visit is expected to be rescheduled for about a month from the original review dates. “While we are disappointed that there will be a delay, we understand the HLC’s desire to ensure that the team members are suited to give us an honest evaluation,” he said. The Board of Trustees was scheduled to meet June 29 to have a discussion related to the commission’s review

process, but that meeting was canceled. In a blog post June 27, Edgar County Watchdogs stated Phelan was a “clone” of College of DuPage President Robert Breuder, who was placed on administrative leave in April. In the post, the watchdog group stated Phelan has received a vote of no confidence from Jackson’s faculty association and been criticized for lavishly spending money on wine and food. Similar complaints have been lodged against Breuder. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, a vocal opponent of Breuder, said in the release that Phelan’s decision to opt out of the review process will set the standard for who will review the school’s accreditation. “Based on this occurrence, we will insist on closely examining the backgrounds of all potential HLC reviewers to ensure a proper assessment of the college that protects all of the educational work done by our faculty and

College officials mull changes to on-campus Waterleaf restaurant By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The on-campus Waterleaf Restaurant at College of DuPage may undergo some drastic changes in the near future. The 6,000-square-foot upscale establishment in the school’s Culinary & Hospitality Center has come under fire in recent months for costing the college more than $530,000 in operations each year since it opened in October 2011 and being the site of controversial meals for trustees. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said the restaurant represents a “financial drain” for the school. “We’re really interested in redirecting where the Waterleaf is going, and so a thought-out analysis … is very important,” she said. To that end, trustee Charles Bernstein led a committee to examine the future of the restaurant, delivering its findings at the board’s June 25 meeting before staff offered options for Waterleaf’s future.

Currently, students staff the front and back of the restaurant Monday and Tuesday nights, while Waterleaf operates as a professional restaurant the rest of the week. Bernstein said the school’s expansion to a full restaurant came at the behest of President Robert Breuder, who now is on administrative leave. “From everything I’ve been able to determine, Waterleaf existed, was created, exists today, because of one man,” he said. “It was the dream and the ambition of one man, one man who wanted a Michelin star. It had and has no educational role.” Staff presented three options for change at Waterleaf: convert the dining area to three small classrooms, open the restaurant to lessees and events, and repurpose the space as an academic lab. A staff report stated repurposing the dining area and bar as classrooms – including removal of finishes and partitions, as well as ductwork and

Glen Ellyn to offer full day of fun July 4 By MATT LA LUZ

Crowds line Crescent Boulevard as the 2014 Glen Ellyn Fourth of July parade gets underway. This year, the parade will follow a revised route to avoid construction.

mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Glen Ellyn will be at its most patriotic this Fourth of July with a new parade route and a theme to match for its annual festivities. The 2015 theme is “Blue, White & Red: North to South Instead” due to the parade route being shortened and reversed because of road construction. Since there is construction on Crescent Boulevard this summer, the parade will be rerouted, beginning at Hawthorne Boulevard and Lenox Road, going north on Lenox Road, turning west onto Linden Street, heading south on Main Street and ending at Crescent Boulevard. The grand marshal for this year’s parade will be Ryan Soukup, owner of Soukup’s Hardware in downtown Glen Ellyn. “I’m surprised, I’m thrilled,” he said. “I told them

of cardboard in order to race on Lake Ellyn. At the same time, Picnic in the Park, a fundraiser for the Glen Ellyn Fourth of July Committee, was held. Attendees enjoyed a cookout of burgers, brats, hot dogs and corn. On July 4, the day will start with the Freedom Four

Afternoon festivities will follow from 1 to 3 p.m. at Lake Ellyn Park with moonwalks, an inflatable obstacle course, penny carnival games with prizes, live music and dancing, and face painting. Glen Ellyn Park District Recreation Supervisor Jessica Marquez, who helped plan the afternoon, said its proceeds will go to the district’s scholarship fund for families that can-

not afford district programs. Marquez is excited about the events and fireworks in Glen Ellyn this year. “I think Glen Ellyn has a large population that looks forward to the Fourth of July festivities,” she said. The day will finish with a fireworks display at dusk. Glen Ellyn’s Fourth of July events are organized through a combined effort from the Glen Ellyn Fourth of July Committee and the Glen Ellyn Park District.

Q & A with the Hearing Doctor 4th of July Fireworks – Is There Danger?

Q: Will a single firecracker going off

nearby hurt your hearing?

A: Loudness is the intensity of sound,

measured as decibels (dB). Very quiet sounds are close to zero dB. Noises above 85dB are considered unsafe. Firecrackers typically produce Dr. Terri Lightbody sounds starting at (630) 580-5777 125dB, which poses a risk of irreversible inner-ear damage. Some warning signs of unsafe levels of sounds include: • Your ears hurt or ace after leaving a noisy area • You have ringing or buzzing (tinnitus) in your ears after exposure to louds • Your ears feel plugged and you have difficulty understanding speech With the 4th of July festivities upon us, you can still enjoy it and protect your hearing. Try using disposable ear protection plugs that can be purchased at our office or drug store. Make sure

the earplugs are securely in your ears before the show begins. Prevention is critical, especially for children who are at a higher risk for noise-induced hearing loss. The damage occurs in our inner ear where the organ of hearing, called the cochlea, is housed. It contains delicate nerve cells or “hair cells”. They are commonly called hair cells because when viewed under a microscope, they resemble little hairs. These delicate hair cells vibrate to create nerve signals and send the signals to the brain. Loud sounds can damage these delicate hair cells, which will result in a sensorineural (permanent) hearing loss. A firecracker going off at 125dB within your general vicinity can damage these hair cells. The same can be said for loud firetrucks in the parade, construction tools and equipment, lawn equipment, and even excessively loud music through earbuds. The gift of hearing is precious as it is the essential avenue for connection between people. It pays to take care of your hearing and protect it.

Glenbard West science center is a lesson in ignorance

To the editor: The village trustees’ … vote to destroy the George Zahrobsky botanic garden has taught a lesson in monumental ignorance to my hometown’s residents, and particularly its high school students: “Tear up a rare, precious, unique natural environment to put up another building.” The trustees’ legacy will be symbolized, ironically, by a “Look at me!” science center, crowned by a rooftop garden – a token gesture to the trend-drunk enthusiasts of the “sustainability movement” and an insult to the ravaged ecosystem that will be gone forever through this disgraceful act. Destroying an exquisite, jewel-like botanic garden will become the first lesson for Glenbard West students for fall 2015. Unobtrusively beautiful, Honey Hill, aka the George Zahrobsky botanic garden, possesses wildflowers, shrubs and tree growth in a natural balance that has lasted since the end of the last glaciation 20,000 years ago. ... A 20,000-yearold pristine ecosystem represents true sustainability. An expensive science building with a costly to maintain rooftop garden mandated by educators besotted with the latest fad represents unsustainability. The subtlety and complexity of a living biosphere is apparently too difficult for science teachers and school administrators, much less village trustees, to understand. Alas, high schools today favor processed science lessons ... Cocoon the students in the latest sterile classrooms so that they do not learn anything, even by rote. Forget the value of the mystery and beauty of a pristine natural environment found nowhere else in DuPage County. ... The unanimous defeat of the preservation of the George Zahrobsky botanic garden blackens the reputations of the village trustees and insults the residents of Glen Ellyn. Soon it will be an injury to our small piece of the planet. The rooftop garden on the new science center will be a “dunce cap” worn by both the building as well as every one of the village trustees and their supporters. Class dismissed. George Ball

Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ moving to the summer this year

OUR VIEW

Ahh, summer. The days are longer, the sun is hotter, the pace is a little slower. The pleasant aroma of charcoal grills drifts from the Glenwood Avenue parking lot … Wait, is that right?! It’s true. This year, the seventh annual Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ will be hosted in the summertime, from noon to 9 COMMUNITY p.m. Aug. 29. VOICE And, you can expect the Lisa same outstanding community event you’ve come to know Doyle and love, with a few exciting additions for this year: • We’re welcoming Famous Dave’s as the title sponsor of the Amateur BBQ Contest (which will feature 63 teams from around the Midwest this year). • Entertainment will include bands from a wider variety of genres, including blues, jazz, ska and rockabilly. • More food vendors featuring the best BBQ in the Chicago area • Expanded Piglet Playland for kids, featuring more games and a dunk tank Thanks to a partnership with the Downtown Glen Ellyn Alliance, there will be fun community events in the week leading up to the BBQ, including parties, contests and more! The Glen Ellyn’s Backyard BBQ has become one of the village’s most anticipated events hosted by the community and for the community. It’s a team of local volunteers that works on the event year-round to ensure this is a day to remember. And, just as much as it’s a deliciously fun day for the Glen Ellyn community, it’s an event with substance at its heart, as all profits from the event go directly to assist the homeless families served by Bridge Communities. We’re all in this together, and we need you more than ever! Volunteers are needed for day-of help. Whether you can sell T-shirts, check IDs at the beer tents or assist with raffle sales, your help will be needed and appreciated. Volunteer for a two-hour shift and make this the best Backyard BBQ yet! For details, visit www.glenellynbackyardbbq.org. We can’t wait to go hog-wild with you Aug. 29!

There are a lot of things in the world for parents to legitimately worry about when it comes to their kids’ safety. Allergies, strangers, bullying … it can be stressful. Artificial turf, thankfully, probably doesn’t belong on that list. But you wouldn’t know that from talking to some Glen Ellyn parents. A group of neighbors living near Newton Park recently sued the Glen Ellyn Park District over the alleged negative outcomes of installing a synthetic turf field at the park. The lawsuit, which a judge ruled as speculation and conjecture, was a waste of district officials’ time and taxpayer dollars on a pretty hard-to-believe concern. The ruling is no surprise – synthetic turf fields are relatively common, with thousands across the country, according to district Treasurer Gary Mayo. They’re so common, in fact, that the district’s Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center already has more than one. District officials were willing to hear and consider the residents’ complaints about the field’s environmental impact. However, at the time those complaints were expressed, the project was approved, contracts were finalized, purchases were made and construction had begun. The residents worried about the presence of toxic materials. But the district has stated that every regulatory body that has

performed and reviewed the research on synthetic fields, including the health departments of California, Connecticut and New York, have concluded the data raises no health concerns. Community response to the field’s installation has not been completely negative. At the first district Board of Commissioners meeting attended by those against the project, as many came to champion the field and its significance for local sports as came to oppose it. Nevertheless, the district spent an estimated $30,000 of mostly taxpayer money on expenses related to the lawsuit, not including staff time and the turf manufacturer’s involvement, according to Director Dave Harris. While the residents’ effort may have been fruitless, they did make one valid point in complaining to the district they received late or no notice from officials about the turf installation – an error to which the board admitted. Hopefully in the future the district will work to create awareness about its proposed undertakings well in advance of approval so community members feel sufficiently heard in the planning stages of projects and such frivolous legal recourse is avoided. And everyone can rest easy that the biggest danger from the turf itself is probably the occasional skinned knee.

The board policies on campaigning do not have the force of law and are unenforceable. Board policy does not trump First Amendment protections. students on behalf of our taxpayers,” she said. The college received a letter May 5 from the commission on its accreditation being placed under review. The commission cited investigations related to institutional finance and ethics violations as being among the reasons for the review. The commission is expected to evaluate the school’s educational responsibilities, ethical practices, degree programs and more. “It has to be driven by the curriculum,” she said. Tim Meyer, one of the school’s culinary program coordinators, said students love the experience of working in the kitchen and faculty likely could handle day-to-day operations at Waterleaf, possibly eliminating several positions. “It gives great opportunities – when students are in the kitchen, it’s a very tight space, they have to stay organized,” he said. “It forces them to do things that they normally have to do in the industry.” Multiple residents expressed support for increased student involvement at Waterleaf during public comment, and the board seemed in favor of additional curricula. “This sounds like a really wonderful option for the Waterleaf,” trustee Dianne McGuire said. “We are really excited about it.” The board will take a formal vote in the future on next steps for the restaurant.

electric work – would run $378,400 to $516,000. Adding two classrooms in the kitchen area would bring the total to about $1 million to $1.3 million. However, Dean for Business and Technology Donna Stewart said the additional classroom space would not add much value to the college’s curriculum. Ellen Roberts, director of business affairs, said school food service provider Sodexo is not interested in taking the space because of its poor location for foot traffic and the provider’s disinterest in a high-end restaurant, building investments and the negative publicity surrounding Waterleaf’s finances. She said the space turns down about five events each month because of lack of availability and could be used for more conferences. She

also said population and employment in DuPage County are trending upward – a good financial sign for restaurants – and that the college could generate revenue by renting Waterleaf’s space to another restaurant for use. Stewart said culinary and hospitality faculty were “erupting” with possibilities for curricula using Waterleaf’s facilities. Given the opportunity, faculty and outside advisers would look at implementing a variety of new classes as early as spring 2016 to take advantage of the real-world feel of the space. She said Waterleaf is a valuable representation of a professional kitchen and restaurant, and its fare could be better tailored to fit curriculum options and make it more accessible for the community. Should the opportunity present itself, Stewart said, she is open to having more catering and full restaurant nights.

Red Stars Earn Convincing 3-0 Win Away over Sky Blue FC

Several players with standout performances as Chicago remains atop NWSL table Piscataway, N.J. – The Chicago Red Stars defended their spot at the top of the NWSL table with a commanding 3-0 away win over Sky Blue FC on Sunday night. Vanessa DiBernardo, Jen Hoy and Alyssa Mautz all scored for Chicago, with Hoy adding an assist on Mautz’ second-half tally. The match also featured a pair of assists by 22-year-old Huerta and outstanding play by defender Abby Erceg, who made her return to the Red Stars lineup after captaining New Zealand in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Chicago goalkeeper Michele Dalton earned her third clean sheet of the season behind an all-around solid performance. The Red Stars seized the lead in just the sixth minute of play. Huerta sprinted into the box on the left and battled to maintain possession before smartly centering to DiBernardo, who coolly sidestepped goalkeeper Brittany Cameron for the opening strike. Sky Blue FC had an opportunity to level the score a mere four minutes later, but Shawna Gordon’s left-footed shot from the top of the area went just over the frame. After three brilliant defensive plays in a row by Chicago’s Erceg, the 25-year-old center back was in the right spot again to block a 21st-minute cross from the right by Sky Blue FC’s Meg Morris. However, the interception fell right to Katie Freels, who nearly put away the opportunity with a left-footed attempt that rattled the crossbar. The home side had another chance to tie the match at the half-hour mark, as Taylor Lytle was in on goal off a beautiful through ball from deep inside her own half, only to have Red Stars outside back Arin Gilliland catch up and force her wide. While the rookie’s hustle allowed Erceg and Samantha Johnson to recover, Lytle still managed to get a shot off, firing across goal and just wide of the far post from the left side of the area. In the 34th minute, Chicago made their opponents pay dearly for the missed opportunities with a beautiful combination play doubling the lead for Head Coach Rory Dames’ side. Rachel Quon took full advantage of a breakaway by releasing Huerta down the center, and the rookie sensation unselfishly slid the ball through to Hoy for a simple tap-in from the mouth of the goal.

FACEBOOK.COM/CHICAGOREDSTARS

Sky Blue FC started off the second half on the right foot, as Freels put Danish international Nadia Nadim through on goal, but Red Stars keeper Michele Dalton left her feet for an exceptional block on the powerful driven effort. That set the stage for Chicago to increase their lead just after the hour mark. Danielle Colaprico’s long ball into the attack found Hoy entering the box with time on her hands, picking out Mautz for a right-footed shot that took a slight deflection and trickled inside the left upright. In the 66th minute of the competition, Huerta nearly added a fourth for her squad when she exploited some indecisive defending by toe-poking the ball away from Maya Hayes and took unleashed a shot on frame to force a diving stop by Cameron. Idaho native Huerta continued to wreak havoc in the closing stages of the match, dribbling past two defenders on the left side of the box and firing from close range, only for Cameron to produce a point-blank reaction save. The rebound fell into the path of Rachel Quon, whose low attempt on goal forced another diving save from the Sky Blue FC goalkeeper. Lytle had a chance to pull one back for the hosts, her strong shot from the top of the penalty area whistling just over the bar. Shorty after that, her teammate Nadia Nadim nearly scored what would have been a certain candidate for Goal of the Year. On a stoppage-time corner kick from the right, the striker tracked back to meet the ball near the edge of the box and smashed it off the crossbar by way of a spectacular bicycle kick. It would be the final opportunity of the night, as Chicago held on for its fifth victory of 2015. The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look to make it consecutive wins when they travel to take on Houston Dash on July 12. The team’s next home game is a July 18 meeting with Boston Breakers at Benedictine University in Lisle. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by calling 773-698-6001 or by visiting www.chicagoredstars. com/tickets.

Restaurant reviews

Baba Karam’s specialty is tasty kabobs

CD • Thursday, July 2, 2015 • mysuburbanlife.com • Suburban Life

VILLA PARK – A knock on some eateries is that they offer so many menu items, the cooking staff can never really master any of them. It’s precisely the opposite at Baba Karam. With a focus on Middle Eastern fare, the restaurant in Villa Park keeps the menu simple, and, in the process, has clearly perfected its craft. I stopped by Baba Karam on a recent evening with a dining companion. Hungry for some protein, I was hankering for something with beef or chicken. But first, to whet our appetite, we started with a hummus appetizer. The smooth, tasty dip, based on chickpeas and tahini sauce, was filled with flavor, and made the accompanying pita bread disappear quickly. Our server asked if we needed more pita, but it turned out that the portions matched up perfectly. For our entrees, we both zeroed in on the main section of the menu: the kabobs. Chicken, ground beef, lamb shank and a few different preparations of filet mignon were offered. I went for the one labeled “barg,” described as thinly sliced filet mignon marinated in saffron and spice. My companion opted for the boneless chicken, similarly marinated in saffron. We both ordered the dill rice; the other sides available were white rice and shirazi salad. The latter features cucumber, tomato and onion in a dressing of olive oil, black pepper, lime juice and mint. I definitely had my hankering for some meat fulfilled, and then some. The filet mignon was as delicious and tender as I expected, and I probably wolfed it down quicker than is strictly acceptable for a nice restaurant. Fortunately for me, my dining companion loved her chicken kabob but couldn’t finish the serving, so I got to sample a sizable portion of that entree, too. As terrific as the barg kabob was, I think the chicken

Volleyball title among highlights for Hilltoppers By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard West is on summer break, and for several athletes at the school it is a well-deserved one. Before the fall sports season starts in August, it’s time to take a look back at some of the spring sports highlights the Hilltoppers had, presented in no particular order.

Boys volleyball nets first title

After finishing fourth in 2011 and third a year ago, Glenbard West ascended to the top of the mountain in boys volleyball this spring. And the Hilltoppers did so in impressive fashion, winning each of their seven playoff matches in two games. The team ended that run with a 25-15, 25-13 victory against Vernon Hills in the championship, reaching the 40-win mark in the process. Quotable: “It was definitely a dominant performance. We wouldn’t want it any other way. We wanted to show everyone we meant business. It’s unreal, what a weekend. We were ready, we were prepared and we knew what we wanted to do. And we executed all the way through the playoffs,” senior Parker Swartz said.

Baseball squad reels off wins, brings home third-place trophy

After starting the season with a 6-7 record, the baseball team was nearly unbeatable from April 20 on. The Spartans finished the regular season by winning 15 of their final 17 contests and then rattled off five straight postseason victories, by a combined 56-2 margin, before falling to Nazareth in the state semis. The squad then bounced back to defeat Morgan Park in the third-place game and brought home the program’s second state trophy in the past three years.

Despite losing two of their top players to season-ending injuries early in the spring, a young Spartans roster played their best soccer down the stretch. A run to the Class 2A Hinsdale South supersectional was highlighted by a 3-2 victory in penalty kicks against Wheaton Academy in the sectional championship. Quotable: “It was a challenge but everyone on the team really stepped up. It’s a

Softball team passes 20-win mark on season

Another 20-win campaign came to fruition this spring for the softball team, which knocked off rival Glenbard South to reach a Class 3A sectional final. The Spartans’ season came to an end with a loss against Kaneland, but the squad finished with a record of 24-5.

Spartans doubles team has strong showing at state tennis

Representing St. Francis at the state tennis tournament, the doubles duo of Chris Chacko and Nick Kovach put together quite the performance. After splitting their opening two matches, they rattled off four straight victories, including a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 win against Neal Shekar and Shree Patel of O’Fallon. Chacko and Kovach had finished first at the Naperville North sectional, where the Spartans took third as a team.

Spartans girls track team sends healthy contingent to state meet

Molly McCarthy produced a sectional title for girls track, winning the high jump at the Glenbard South sectional. The sophomore was joined at the state meet by Amanda Peterson, who qualified in the 100-meter dash, and the 4x200 relay of Peterson, Haley Garvy, Kate Howard and Brianna French.

All-state track finishes part of Glenbard South highlights By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Track and field and the diamond sports were just some of the areas where Glenbard South athletes shined this spring. With summer break in full swing, now is a great time to look back at some of the spring sports highlights for the Raiders, presented in no particular order.

Curtis snags medals in 100, high jump at state track meet

Jack Curtis capped off his outstanding athletic career at Glenbard South by winning a pair of all-state medals in track and field. The senior placed fourth in the high jump after clearing a season’s best 6 feet, 7 inches and then finished eighth in the 100-meter dash with a clocking of 11.09. Quotable: “It was a good way to go out. I’m happy for myself and I’m happy for my team and my coaches. I’m thankful that I got to run for such a great team,” Curtis said.

Rumel cracks top-10 finish in Class 2A pole vault event

Kate Rumel also stood on the awards podium after coming in seventh in the Class 2A pole vault. The senior posted a height of 10 feet, 6 inches after winning the sectional title with a mark of 10-3. Caroline Arlasky had a 12th-place showing in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:36.82. Quotable: “Last year I took six jumps ... and I never made nine feet. I never thought I would medal at all. Holding up our hands together on the podium [with the other medalists] was surreal, that was the best part,” Rumel said.

Baseball, softball squads both reach 20-win mark this season

Although they were up and down at times, the Raiders baseball team still managed to win 23 games this spring while claiming a regional title. The softball squad also had another successful campaign, capturing another conference title with a perfect run through the Metro Suburban and finishing with 24 victories.

Quote: “This was the hardest working senior group I’ve ever had. We had five captains and every one was as good as the other as far as being a captain. ... They were great leaders all year. It’s a group that we are going to miss. Last year we were 20-11 and played a lot of young kids. This year, we thought we would have a team that could do some things,” baseball coach Mike Riley said. McGovern represents Raiders at state gymnastics meet

Eric McGovern competed at the state meet in the prelims of the floor exercise, and the senior posted a score of 7.50. McGovern had snagged an at-large berth after competing with his teammates at the Glenbard West sectional.

Senior duo of Schmidt, Schlaefke shine at badminton state tourney

The senior doubles pairing of Emily Schmidt and Lydia Schlaefke ended their high school careers at the IHSA state tournament. After placing fourth at the Neuqua Valley sectional, the duo went on to win a pair of matches at state.

Q&A

‘It’s been unbelievable’

Lemont native relishes experience with Stanley Cup By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com

LEMONT – The past year has been a whirlwind for Scott Darling after the Lemont native signed with the Chicago Blackhawks on July 1, 2014. Having made a variety of stops on the minor league circuit, the 26-year old got his first call-up to the NHL on Oct. 26 and was the winning goalie in a 2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators. Darling went on to play in 14 regular season games before seeing action in five postseason contests in the opening round against Nashville, where he notched three wins. His performance helped the Blackhawks advance to the second round and ultimately capture their third Stanley Cup in the past six seasons. In the process, the 6-foot-6 goalie became the first Chicago-area born player to have his name etched on the Cup as a member of the Blackhawks. On June 29, Darling brought the cup to his former hometown and put it on display at the Lemont Park District. Staff writer Scott Schmid was part of a press conference at which Darling spoke about the experience in Lemont and what it has been like to be a part of a Stanley Cup champion. What has the last couple of weeks been like and has it sunk in that you are a Stanley Cup Champion? Darling: It’s been crazy since we’ve won. We’ve done a lot of great stuff, like going to Wrigley Field and going to see Mumford & Sons. And now this is my day to share the Cup with my hometown and with my family and friends. Once it all winds down a little bit, I can relax and just reflect, maybe turn my phone off for a few days and enjoy it for a little bit. What’s the last year been like? Darling: The whole year, from start to finish, like I’ve said before, it was such an honor to sign with the team and I was thrilled to be on the [Rockford] Ice Hogs. Then to get the opportunity with Chicago and to have a role

Darling: This is where I spent a lot of my life, these are the streets where I use to ride my bike. To see how excited the people are, it means a lot. I never forgot where I came from. I call this home, I always have my whole life. I played Little League here, I played for the Lemont Indians. I was [just like] those kids out there, and to see them all here, it’s exciting. How did your new tattoo of the Stanley Cup come about? Darling: I’m a fan of tattoos. I always wanted an excuse to get a Stanley Cup tattoo and now I have a great one. What is your mindset heading into next season? Darling: I’m hungry as ever. I want to stay here, I want to be here for a long time. I’ll take a couple of weeks off and then a couple of weeks later, the season will start. I’m excited to get to camp and I still have to earn my spot for next year.
