Police station plans move forward in Glen Ellyn By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Is Glen Ellyn ready for a new police station? The village and police department think it’s about time and are seeking bids on the project. The Village Board held a special workshop meeting June 22 to discuss hiring a team to design and construct a facility. Glen Ellyn released a request for qualifications May 27, according to village documents, which is the first step in seeking the team. “First and foremost, we have space constraints at the current facility,” Deputy Chief Bill Holmer said of the existing station, which is housed in the Glen Ellyn Civic Center at 535 Duane St. The 35,000-square-foot facility would be constructed on a budget of about $12 million, according to Holmer, and would be paid for by a bond sale.

“We spent years bridging facility gaps with workarounds and quick fixes. We’ve come to the end of where those quick fixes become long-term solutions.” Bill Homer Deputy chief “We spent years bridging facility gaps with workarounds and quick fixes,” he said. “We’ve come to the end of where those quick fixes become long-term solutions.” Discussions on the project began in 2008, but initial talks were put on hold because of budgetary issues, Holmer said. Early conversations about the need for the station stemmed from challeng-

An architect was hired in 2011 to do a space needs study, and the findings were presented to the Village Board. The findings indicated the department should have about 42,000 square feet of space, according to Holmer. The Civic Center space allows the department about 11,000 square feet, village documents stated. Village Board President Alex Demos said the project is overdue and the village would like to follow the example of other communities that have updated or constructed new police facilities, such as Hanover Park, Glendale Heights and Wheaton. “There is no question that the facility where the police department is now is antiquated and no longer viable,” Demos said. According to Holmer, the village would like to build a station with a minimum 50-year lifespan at Panfish Park, south of Roosevelt Road on Park Boulevard, where the village already owns land. “We’re trying to build a facility that fits with the community,” he said. The new station would allow for a larger and improved booking area, property and evidence storage, separation between interview rooms and offices, a parking lot, an emergency operations center, a community room and training rooms. The village plans to interview topranked teams between July 13 and 24 and begin negotiations July 27 to 31, according to village documents. Holmer said if plans continue on schedule the department hopes to break ground on the project in spring 2016. “We’re thrilled and we think that it’s going to be a facility that the community can be proud of,” he said.

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE

Report: Breuder spent more than Former trustee Savage files complaint against Clean Slate $100,000 in foundation money By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – A former College of DuPage trustee has filed a complaint alleging the committee for a slate of former Board of Trustees candidates failed to report a sizable loan during the process of the April election. Kim Savage, who was soundly defeated Kim Savage in her bid for re-election this year, filed the formal complaint with the Illinois State Board of Elections, alleging a $20,000 loan from current college Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton to the Clean Slate for College of DuPage Committee was not reported in a timely manner. The committee supported then-candidates Charles Bernstein, Deanne Mazzochi and Frank Napolitano. Savage alleges in the complaint the loan was received April 27, but not reported to the state until May 17 – long

after the five business days required by Illinois’ Campaign Disclosure Act. In a statement, Savage acknowledged small campaigns often have difficulty following the act. “The Clean Slate ran on a very vocal platform of total transparency and to end all alleged violations of policy, yet their own campaign clearly failed to follow one of the simplest requirements of the Campaign Disclosure Act,” she said. The trio’s platform was announced after months of controversy at the college, including a $763,000 buyout for President Robert Breuder, trustees expensing questionable items at the on-campus Waterleaf Restaurant, theft and forgery charges being brought against a school employee and more. In a high-profile election, the three swept the race, with several thousand dollars in donations and in-kind services from Hamilton, her husband and her campaign fund, according to

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GLEN ELLYN – College of DuPage President Robert Breuder spent more than $102,000 of the College of DuPage Foundation’s money from 2010 to 2014, according to a Chicago Tribune report. Citing statements filed by the Internal Revenue Service, the report stated the embattled president, who is now on paid administrative leave, expensed the money between July 2010 and June 2014 for “leadership cultivation meetings.” However, records indicate the money also was spent on bar tabs, a rifle for a foundation officer, a limousine ride and more for trustees, senior managers, foundation board members and college vendors, according to the report. Included in the total is $57,597 spent at the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation, a private club for hunting, fishing and land management in Dundee Township, the report stated. The school foundation paid for about three dozen outings at the club during Breuder’s time at the college, including retreats and meetings, and the school has paid $26,133 to Max

McGraw through October. One outing in March 2014 for Breuder and three guests to eat and hunt rang up a total bill of $1,292 – all expensed to the foundation, according to the report. Breuder, in a newsletter in October 2014, said the club membership, paid for jointly by the foundation and college, funded meetings and fundraising events “for the primary purpose of raising money and developing friendships that can benefit COD,” the report stated. The foundation did not provide the school’s president with a discretionary fund until Breuder’s tenure on campus, according to the report. In addition, receipts provided from 2009 to 2014 do not match amounts reported to the IRS, suggesting college officials were unable to identify all of Breuder’s foundation expenses during that time, the report stated. “The days depicted in the records you have are over,” school spokesman Randall Samborn said in a statement in the report. “With tough economic times, we hope foundation dollars get to students and tuition, not wining and dining.”

Jazz in Glen Ellyn to offer soundtrack for summer By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Looking for a taste of Ravinia without having to leave Glen Ellyn? The Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce intends to provide just that with its annual Jazz in Glen Ellyn festival July 11 on Main Street in downtown Glen Ellyn. Originally called Jazz Fest, the festival began in 2007 and helps raise money for chamber events, according to chamber Executive Director Mike Formento. This year the festival will extend off Main Street to Pennsylvania Avenue to accommodate for large crowds, which Formento expects to reach up to 3,000 attendees. “Lots of people bring their own chairs, appetites and desire for great music on a nice evening,” Formento said. The event will feature several Chicago jazz musicians, along with food, wine, beer and other refreshments. The artists performing this year include lePercolateur, Stephanie Browning Quartet, Howard Levy and Chris Siebold, and Chicago Yestet. Two of the most notable performers this year are Levy and Siebold. Levy is a multiple Grammy award winner and a master of the diatonic harmonica, as well as a pianist, composer, recording artist, band leader, teacher and producer, according to the Jazz in Glen Ellyn website. Siebold, a guitarist hand-picked by Levy, has spent his 20-year career drawing from musical styles as varied

as bluegrass, bebop, big band jazz, rock and R&B. The event also will offer Gypsy jazz with a mix of swing in the form of the band lePercolateur. The Stephanie Browning Quartet will deliver a combination of classic jazz standards and contemporary songs, and the festival will close with Chicago Yestet, a large band with seven horns, a rhythm section, spoken word and a vocalist. Formento believes it’s the entertainment that keeps audience members coming back for more. “We really believe it’s the fine entertainment schedule that we’ve consistently provided. People really like the performers we have available,” he said. Jeffers said the variety of musicians for the festival is important to cater to both casual listeners and devoted jazz fans. “You want groups that are inclusive of both audiences,” he said. “Being able to offer a variety is what is key to the success of this festival.” The event is free and open to the public, but seating reservations will be available, with premium tables of four or more selling for $100 or single seats selling for $30.

POLICE REPORTS

Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Discount Programs

Q: Can I really save money if I get

hearing aids through a “discount plan”?

A: Truthfully, some plans will help you

save a little money on the hearing aid itself. However, you usually end up paying more later.

Most discount plans do not include the follow-up services necessary to ensure the most successful outcome. These discount programs work with less used hearing aid companies and older model hearing aids to provide the cheaper prices. When the discount plan dictates which product we can use, the patient usually loses. It takes the expertise of the Doctor of Audiology to evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe the correct hearing aid for the patient. Not all hearing aids are created equal, nor are they appropriate for everyone. Dr. Terri Lightbody (630) 580-5777

The patient using the discount program is frequently dissatisfied with their experience when they discover the limitations of the program. Discount programs never work directly with the

patient, they always refer their patients to a small group of providers they have recruited. Another complaint about discount programs from patients is the “middle man” effect. This is where you add another part to a transaction; there is a substantially higher chance of miscommunication, delays or mistakes due to having the middle man. The patient ends up suffering. The discount programs dictate which provider you will see. You have no idea who that person is or what their credentials are. More often than not, the providers are located more than 20 minutes away from where the patient lives. Discount programs are usually created by insurance companies as a way to avoid hearing aid coverage. The insurance company is not paying for anything. It may be confusing, however the Audiologist can help you sort through the advertisements and find the best product and pricing for your individual needs.

It is attracting people from across DuPage County as well as Chicago and beyond. We have continued to be recognized as one of the best jazz entertainment programs in the area. COMMUNITY In fact, we just received noVOICE tice that Glancer Magazine’s Mike 2015 Readers Choice Award, voted by the public, selected Formento Jazz in Glen Ellyn to receive its Award of Excellence. Once again, the chamber has arranged a spectacular entertainment program for this year. We have selected four outstanding different styles of jazz performers for your listening pleasure. We will feature four jazz performers starting with Gypsy Jazz by the Le Percolateur Band followed by the Stephanie Browning Quartet. Stephanie is noted for her Ella Fitzgerald jazz singing style. We then move to our main performance by the Howard Levy and Chris Siebold duo. Howard is a two-time Grammy Award winner and is internationally known for his jazz interpretation on the harmonica and will be joined by Chris Siebold on the guitar. Both are noted not only for their individual innovative performance but also as writers and directors of jazz music. We will top off the evening performances with a real bang by presenting Joel Adams – Chicago Yestet BIG band, a tenpiece orchestra that will have everyone tapping their feet to their great jazz sounds. Once again, we have available reserved seating in the garden area in front of the stage. We encourage you to make your reservations early since seating is limited. We welcome everyone to bring their own chairs, but please no alcoholic beverages, coolers or tables can be brought into the concert area. We also will have a fine selection of beverages and an exciting food menu available for purchase. Please visit our www.jazzinglenellyn.org website for all of the up-to-date information and reservations for seating. We are looking forward to seeing you at Jazz in Glen Ellyn on July 11.

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees is debating the future of the Waterleaf Restaurant on campus.

OUR VIEW

College wise to consider big changes at Waterleaf Were you pleased to hear that your tax dollars and students’ tuition payments were used to fund more than $530,000 in annual losses for Waterleaf Restaurant? Probably not. The fancy, and frankly, quite nice restaurant at the College of DuPage has been a massive money loser since it opened in 2011. It’s virtually certain that any privately owned restaurant that saw those kinds of losses would’ve long since ceased operations. And lest you find yourself thinking that these losses are strictly a result of the restaurant’s use as an educational facility, that’s not the case, either. Students only staff the restaurant on Mondays and Tuesdays; the rest of the time, it’s run as a professional restaurant. The school’s trustees are considering three options to stem the tide of red ink:

Suburban Life Media Editorial Board Laura Burke, Dave Lemery, Matt Hendrickson, Anna Schier, Alex Soulier, Mary Beth Versaci

convert the restaurant to classrooms, open it to leasing and events, or repurpose it as an academic lab. Nice as the restaurant is, all of those options sound preferable to the status quo. With all the fine dining options that abound in the College of DuPage’s district, it’s hard to believe that anyone ever thought that Waterleaf could’ve been anything but a financial boondoggle. If there’s a way to let students continue to train in a restaurant-style environment while cutting the losses way back, it’s pretty obvious that would be a desirable outcome. And it sounds like several trustees are thinking along those lines. We’d like to see Waterleaf continue in some fashion, with some mix of student and faculty running things, but as a professionally run restaurant, this is a business model that clearly has failed.

This is in response to the person who was griping about teachers and how great we’ve got it. Teaching isn’t a job, it’s a calling. Half these parents can’t even handle your own kids, try handling 30 at one time. I don’t know what this person does for a living, but I’m sure with a little training, I could do it. There’s no way he could do my job.

The Sound Off comments regarding teachers in recent weeks have been frustrating to read. In the July 1 edition, the average teacher salary circa 2012 was declared to be $70,000. Teachers have really taken a hit then, because the current average salary in Illinois is $59,000. ... As usual, small, unhappy minds are complaining when some people have more than they do, even when the people they describe really don’t. Rather than attacking one group, which may or may not have a better salary, doesn’t it make sense to work together to raise everyone’s salaries?

I’m responding to the caller titled “Teachers’ compensation has an impact on pension crisis.” ... I think the thing that’s most important here to say is that if you would like to become a teacher and benefit from those benefits that you say that we receive, then you’re more than welcome to do that. ... I worked in corporate America for over, oh, about 25 years, before I became a teacher. I have a bachelor’s degree, I have a master’s degree and I have continuing education, and my salary compensates me for the type of education that I have in the educational industry. I also don’t get bonuses that people get in corporate America, and I also don’t get a golden parachute if I was to leave an organization in corporate America. Every job has their own benefits and perks.

Regarding the summer meal program at the Glen Ellyn library, I too agree that it’s hard to concentrate when hungry. But there is missed opportunity for the library to teach life skills in exchange for a free lunch. With so much back-end work such as shelving and dusting books and prepping events, these participants can help out. It’s not only an opportunity to explore books at our wonderful library, but it’ll also teach an invaluable lesson of responsibility and self-worth.

The Glen Ellyn library will begin construction in September on several renovations to the Youth Department, including a new play area for kids (above).

Library youth department to undergo $1.1M in renovations By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The Glen Ellyn Public Library Youth Department will be getting a younger look come September. “We are looking to create an exciting new space that better meets the needs of our youngest members and their parents,” Director Dawn Bussey said in a library news release. The department will undergo construction to create a more flexible, accessible and user-friendly space for kids and parents, the release stated. The project will cost $1.1 million and will be funded through the library’s building, equipment and maintenance fund, according to Youth Department Director Renee Grassi. The renovation plans came after

Continued from page 12 needed to adjust to changing societal and technological shifts, create an area to accommodate rising attendance in youth programs, provide space dedicated specifically to children and middle school students, and update displays and collections, she said. The groups led the library to establish three phases of renovation. The first phase, which already has come to fruition, was a remodel of the Adult Department completed in January, Grassi said. The Youth Department remodel will be the second phase, and, depending on feedback, could lead to a remodel of the library’s entryway and circulation space, which would be the third and final phase. The Youth Department redesign will include a children’s play area, an early-reader nook, the relocation of picture and board books for easier access, and a space for middle school patrons, according to the release. The children’s play area and early-reader nook will be in the back of the department near the east windows and away from the department entrance.

NEIGHBOR

“We are so lucky to be so well supported by our community. There has certainly been an uptick in usage. We are just excited to give our families the library they deserve,” Grassi said. The children’s play area will feature interactive play panels with color mixing, animal sounds and spinning stories, as well as a walk-up LEGO wall, interactive magnet board and custom puppet theater, according to the release. The nook will have oversized seating for children and adults. The picture and board book collections will find new homes in face-out, easy-to-browse shelving units near the children’s play area. Middle school visitors also will get a new space with tables, chairs and a large chalkboard. The middle school books will be housed just outside the space, along the walls. In addition to the new areas, the youth program room will be enlarged to accommodate the library’s growing numbers. Other improvements will include a colorful paint scheme, fresh carpet, updated lighting and more seating. “It’s really to bring [the library] to the 21st century to reflect how families are using the libraries,” Grassi said. The project is expected to be completed in December.

Planting a garden that supports pollinators can be a very rewarding task and you don’t have to have a large garden to make a difference. The Monarch butterfly has experienced a rapid decline in recent years and if homeowners across the country start planting “Monarch Waystations”, we can help the survival of the species. If you are looking to attract Monarchs there is one plant that you must include in your garden planning: milkweed. Monarch butterfly caterpillars are picky eaters and adult Monarch females lay their eggs on milkweed as it is the only plant larvae will eat! In this area, there are a number of plants you can add to your landscaping which will attract Monarchs, as well as other butterflies, bees, moths and even hummingbirds. Many flowers – especially native plants – are a great source of nectar for adult Monarchs. Choose a spot that receives at least six hours of sun a day, which is required by most butterfly-loving plants. When selecting milkweed, be sure you choose one that appropriate for this area. This includes Common, Swamp, and Whorled milkweed or the vibrant orange Butterfly Weed. In order to attract adult butterflies, add a mix of annuals and perennials that bloom throughout the growing season. For example, you may want to include allium or chives (early season), along with bee balm or black-eyed susan for the mid-season, and aster or sedum (late season). Many of these plants can be picked up at your local nursery and specialty nurseries carry native plants and have knowledgeable staff to www.geparks.org help answer questions.

Q:

How do I attract Monarch butterflies to my garden?

A:

Pharmacy What is the difference between a food allergy and a food sensitivity? A food allergy is usually an immediate response with a symptom and it comes from an immune response (IgE and IgG immune reactions)

A food sensitivity is a measure of inflammation by the amount seen of white blood CELL swelling. This response is usually delayed and when you eat that food you get a serotonin release which to the brain is “happy chemical” and when you don’t you have withdrawal symptoms (craving, headache, unpleasant feeling)

ALCAT is a brand of food sensitivities blood testing. Some doctors believe 60% of all illnesses. Glen Ellyn Pharmacy sells ALCAT tests.

the Illinois State Board of Elections. Since taking office, the new trustees voted Hamilton into the chairwomanship and formed a majority, enacting several reforms, including placing Breuder and two financial administrators on leave and agreeing to pay for a state financial audit of the school. None of the Clean Slate trustees responded to a request for comment, though campaign manager Clayton Turner did via email. “The Clean Slate for College of DuPage Committee has reported all donations and expenses,” he said. “The Clean Slate Committee has corrected technical nonconformities and is fully compliant.” In the case of a Campaign Disclosure Act violation, before determining a possible fine, the Illinois State Board of Elections website states the following items are considered: • Whether a committee attempted to disclose the contribution and any attempts made to correct the violation • Whether the violation is attributed to a clerical or computer error • The amount of the contribution • Whether the violation arose from a discrepancy between the date a con-

Hamilton said leadership overlooked Savage’s involvement in the election, and that Savage and former trustee Nancy Svoboda campaigned together as a slate. Questions also were raised by watchdog group Edgar County Watchdogs about an email sent by Savage that was made public in which she asked for help from the school’s attorney with answering questions for an article about the election. “Considering the intense scrutiny the college was under during the same time I was in the middle of an election campaign, I had legal and fiduciary responsibility to avoid compromising the college’s legal position in any statements I made as both a candidate and a sitting board member,” Savage said in the statement.

*VUZ\TLY ;PWZ 5 ways to get buyers to see your open house as their next house (BPT) - What makes a person or a family decide a home is the perfect for them? Is it all location, location, location? What about price, schools or the neighborhood? Or is it something else; a feeling they get when they walk in the door, a detail they notice or a scent in the air. If you’re selling your home your home, your location, neighborhood and school district are predetermined. Yet there is plenty you can do yourself to make sure your open house has that wow factor and captivates would-be buyers. Here are five tips to get you started so that next family will determine your home is the perfect home.

1

Get clean. It sounds simple, but it’s amazing how many homeowners don’t clean their homes before an open house. This is one case where lived-in isn’t going to cut it. The kitchen and bathrooms should be spotless, cracked tiles should be repaired and any plumbing issues should be addressed. Expect that people will try the sinks and flush the toilets. If you don’t feel you can get your home ready on your own, hire a professional cleaning service to do the job for you. The money you spend on the cleaners will be well worth it when your house sells quickly.

2

Add a fresh sent to the air. Your home should be pleasing to the eye as well as pleasing to the nose. Realtors have recognized the benefits of great smells for years. You can keep your home smelling great throughout the showing - and without synthetic ingredients - by using pure essential oils from Aura Cacia. Try this simple recipe to create a warm, comforting atmosphere that can help put potential property buyers at ease with these recipes: • 1 cup coarse-grained, chunky sea salt

3

Time for a makeover. If your home needs a more substantial makeover before it can sell, focus your energy and your money on the most important rooms in the home. Kitchens and master bedrooms sell homes, meaning that a granite countertop, new appliance or fresh coat of bedroom paint will give you a better chance to sell your home than other projects may allow.

4 5

Cut the clutter. Even the cleanest homes still feel messy if there’s lots of clutter. Before your open house, adopt a minimalist approach and keep your home as clutter-free as possible. Remember, you want buyers to see the beauty of your home, not simply the items you keep in it.

• 1 teaspoon jojoba or grapeseed oil (just enough to make the salts glisten) • 25 drops vanilla precious essential oil • 10 drops lavender essential oil • 10 drops sweet orange essential oil Mix salt and oils, pour into a decorative dish or bowl and set out on a table. Placing the crystals in a warm sunny window or near a heat register will help diffuse the delicious aroma throughout the room. Stir in additional essential oils to boost the scent as needed. More recipe ideas and open house tips can be found at www.auracacia.com.

Start at the curb. Poor curb appeal can put buyers off to your home before they even step foot inside. Make sure your home’s outside is every bit as beautiful as the inside. Paint the exterior if you need to, plant flowers in the flower bed and mow the lawn. Buyers should never walk up to your front door already thinking it’s a fixer-upper. An open house provides an excellent opportunity to showcase your home and help buyers fall in love with. And once they do, they’re sure to make your current home their future home.

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Upon being selected to take over the Glenbard South football program in early February, Ryan Crissey envisioned a smooth transition after being an assistant under former head coach Jeremy Cordell. As the defending Metro Suburban conference champions begin their fourth week of summer camp, that is exactly what has transpired. “The transition has been really smooth,” Crissey said. “We are practicing fast and the kids are playing with confidence. Obviously I’m putting my own touches on things and there are some nuances which need getting used to. But that’s why we have summer camp. “I’m very happy with how things have been going. It’s been a great first summer camp and I think a lot of that is because of the familiarity I have with the kids. They know what the expectations are.”

Live video online

Crissey inherits a team that has a lot of experience returning on both sides of the ball. On offense, the Raiders welcome back quarterback Kyle Carli, running back Sean Cooke, tight end Billy Bair and wide receivers Jimmy Ebbole and Javonis Hawkins, among others. The defense is led by Dylan Valdez and Ryan Willis. Numbers are up, with more than 50 kids participating in the varsity camp. That provides much-needed depth. “Everything has been very positive,” Crissey said. “Numbers are really good and we have good senior leadership. This is a pretty senior-laden team and that’s why we’ve been able to hit the ground running. “Off the top of my head, we may only have three kids on defense who have no experience playing varsity and on offense, maybe two. And my goal is to have 22 starters [this season]. If we have to, maybe only one kid would be a two-

way player.” One thing Crissey has seen from the group thus far is a drive to be successful. “They are really driven to achieve their goals,” he said. “They understand that at practice they are all there to work toward a purpose. Kids are holding each other accountable. I want kids to take ownership of the program and you can see that.” Glenbard South has taken part in a couple of 7-on-7 passing events against West Chicago and Marmion. And now with the calender switching to July, the countdown to the start of the 2015 season is less than two months away. The Raiders open with a home game against Addison Trail on Aug. 28. The squad wraps up summer camp on July 16 before starting back up in August. “It’s very exciting,” Crissey said. “There is a lot to do and little time. The kids are ener- Jim Ebbole (right) breaks up a pass to Bill Bair on July 7 at Glenbard gized. They are salivating for South football summer camp. Changes alter football playoff landscape

Glenbard West’s Brian Cochrane delivers a pass June 25 during a 7-on-7 game.

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com The IHSA announced some rule changes that will affect postseason play in team sports, including a new way to seed teams in the football playoffs. On June 15, the IHSA board of directors approved a change to the structure of the football playoffs which will seed teams in Classes 7A and 8A from 1 to 32. The previous structure featured 16-team and eight-team brackets to limit travel distances. However, that came under fire because of an unbalanced seeding format and many of the same teams facing each other year after year. For example, last year Class 8A was broken into a 16-team bracket and two brackets of eight teams. The 16team bracket, which included schools mostly from the north and northwest suburbs as well as West Suburban Conference teams Lyons Township, Glenbard West and Oak Park-River Forest, featured four teams with 8-1 records and three 9-0 teams. Each of the two eightteam brackets had only two 8-1 teams and no undefeated teams. The new rule should help alleviate the imbalance in the bracket and also provide fresh matchups in the playoffs. Three of the 16 first-round games in the Class 8A bracket were rematches of conference games from the regular season. “We like to play other teams,” Downers Grove South coach Mark Molinari said. “We were thrilled to play Simeon last year. We didn’t have the result we wanted, but just to play someone else was awesome. If that means we have to travel to Edwardsville or

GW plugging holes By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Each summer camp is a little bit different for Chad Hetlet and the Glenbard West football program. For example, this time around, with the Hilltoppers being hit hard by graduation on the defensive side of the ball, there are plenty of starting spots open. “We have to replace eight on defense,” Hetlet said, “so we are trying to figure all that out. We are trying to find some spots. But it’s been going well.” Having taken off the week leading up to the Fourth of July, the squad currently is in the midst of its second-tolast week of camp. The start of the 2015 season is less than two months away as Glenbard West opens at home against Bolingbrook on Aug. 29. “First of all, we are just trying to see what the team is made of as well as trying to fill holes from last year,” Hetlet said. “It’s a really talented group. The juniors haven’t lost a game in their careers and the seniors are a solid class with a lot of talent. We will see how they mesh together.”

The Hilltoppers recently got a taste of healthy competition after competing in the 32-team Red Grange Classic 7-on-7 event at Wheaton Warrenville South. The squad had an especially strong opening day in the pool play portion of the tournament. “There was really great competition,” Hetlet said, “and the kids have to be able to perform under pressure.” The offense this fall will be led by running back and Vanderbilt-recruit Sam Brodner, but he is far from the only weapon. Fellow running back Isaiah Skinner returns for his third season on the varsity, Adam Zybko is a tall target at tight end and Chrystian Maciorowski is expected to do good things at wide receiver. Brian Cochrane takes over at quarterback for Kyle Kramer and has looked strong this summer. Defensively, Nico Gagliano and Ross Andreasik are the unquestioned leaders of that unit. “We are bigger than we’ve been up front, both offensively and defensively,” Hetlet said. “We have some really good skill on offense and we have good team speed. We are just a little bit bigger than we usually are.”

into two subsectionals to avoid loaded regionals such as the Class 3A baseball regional that included powerhouse teams Lemont, Joliet Catholic and Lincoln-Way West, all state title contenders, meeting in the first rounds of the playoffs. In addition, the so-called success adjustment rule will be implemented for the 2015-16 school year. Nonboundaried schools with at least two state trophies in the past four years and at least one in the past two years will be moved up one class. In all, 23 teams were moved up. “I’m thrilled, absolutely thrilled,” Molinari said. “We’ve been asking for it for a long time [as coaches] and I’ll be the first one to say it’s almost perfect.” Another local team that could be affected by the classification adjustment is Nazareth football. The Roadrunners had the third-smallest enrollment, based on their nonboundary school multiplier, in Class 6A this past fall. With Montini and Sacred-Heart Griffin, the finalists each of the past two years in Class 5A, moving up to 6A, Nazareth could be on the bubble to move down despite being defending 6A champions. Another possibility is a Nazareth-Montini playoff meeting. “I go way back with [Montini coach] Chris [Andriano],” Nazareth coach Tim Racki said. “He was the head coach at Montini when I played there. I have great respect for him. We have a great relationship. If we saw him that would be a great challenge.”

somewhere else, I’m completely fine with it.” In the other six classes, there will be two 16-team brackets, thus eliminating eight-team quadrants. The previous rule, according to the IHSA’s release on the announcement, would “change the bracket to quadrants if certain travel mileage distances were exceeded.” “I love it,” Downers Grove North coach John Wander said. “They used to say travel was bad; I think that’s what makes it. We’re a unique sport where not everyone makes the playoffs, and if someone told me I had to go to East St. Louis, I’d be happier than heck because that means we’re back in the playoffs this year.” Other team sports also will have a restructuring in the postseason. In smaller classes and outside the Chicago area, sectionals in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball had been separated into four regionals based on geogSuburban Life sports ediraphy and then seeded. Now, tor Jason Rossi contributed to sectionals will be broken down this story.
