The house at 444 Longfellow Ave. has drawn complaints from neighbors and code violations. Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com

By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN believed neighbor dispute has left the side of a Glen Ellyn house multicolored and residents wondering where to turn for assistance. The antics from the house at 444 Longfellow Ave. have not only drawn ire from community members but also gotten attention from the police, the DuPage Health Department and village officials. Julie Dombroski, who police listed as living at the residence, received a citation from the Glen Ellyn Police Department on July 24 for exceeding the maximum number of pets allowed at a residence. They are housing four dogs, which is above the village limit of three. The Environmental Health Services at the DuPage County Health Department also received a complaint about excessive dog waste at the property July 31, according to Public Information Officer Dave Hass. The health department issued a violation notice to the property owner, which gives them until Aug. 31 to pick up the waste. The health department plans to follow up on the matter as necessary, Hass said. And the various infractions came to a head after the health inspection. In what some neighbors speculate to

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Ten months after his death, the DuPage County Board is ensuring a late member will be remembered for years to come. The board formally dedicated its caucus room to Jerome “JR” McBride during its Aug. 11 meeting. McBride died Oct. 24, 2014, after a battle with cancer. Business owner Karyn Romano, a Glen Ellyn resident, assumed the District 4 seat on Dec. 9, 2014. Chairman Dan Cronin said the room would serve as a perfect way to honor the “friend and beloved county board member.” “I think everybody pretty much [knows] JR McBride had a profound impact on our board,” he said. “I

think his most powerful tool was his sense of humor and his desire to talk and collaborate and find common ground. ... We think it’s very fitting.” McBride, a Glen Ellyn resident and insurance agent, began serving on the board in 2006 following the death of John Noel. McBride served as chairman of the Emergency Telephone Service Board. He also served on the Judicial and Public Safety, Legislative, Public Transit and Technology committees. His attendance at board meetings became infrequent after he had brain surgery in 2011 to remove a tumor, his fourth operation in 11 years. McBride also was a member of the DuPage Community Board for Metropolitan Family Services and was involved with Misericordia Heart of Mer-

cy in Chicago, Outreach Community Ministries, Rotary Club, the DuPage Chapter of the American Cancer Society and the Glenbard West High School Booster Club. Cronin was joined by several of McBride’s family members, including his wife Becky, several of his five children and his siblings. Becky McBride said she appreciated the gesture and knew her late husband would as well. She told the board she hoped his appearance when they walked into the room for hard political conversations “warms your heart and reminds you of the lightheartedness of all of this and his sense of humor and his ability to connect, communicate, build bridges with people and I hope it makes those conversations easier to do.”

Kathy Schaffnit, who has lived on Longfellow Avenue for three years, said she was surprised at the activity of the residents in a neighborhood she describes as great. “When I first saw it, I thought, ‘Oh, my God, what is that going to do to my property value?’” she said. “It’s going to devalue my property and I worked very hard to get my property to where it is.” Schaffnit proposed filing a complaint and thinks 90 percent of neighbors would sign a formal complaint. Dombroski declined to comment. While neighbors have called into question the legality of the yellow-, orange- and purple-striped house, there is little that can be done in this situation. Glen Ellyn does not have an ordinance or village code that regulates paint colors on houses, according to Al Stonitsch, assistant village manager. Amabile said she also is fearful of what the house will do to property values in the area because of the foul

smell from the dog waste and the house color. Water runoff has caused the dog waste to spread through various properties on the block. Amabile said people walking through the neighborhood have commented on the smell. “I can go to court and I can do whatever I want, but we won’t win because anybody can color the house any way they want,” Amabile said. In response to the painted house and the irrigation of dog fecal matter, Amabile said she has to spend $7,000 to build a fence separating her backyard. Amabile and other concerned neighbors are eager for a positive resolution. “We should be able to work together and have something positive [come] out of this,” she said. Amabile has not sought an attorney. Ideally, she said she would like them to repaint the house and pick up after the dogs. “In a perfect world, we should just be civil,” she said.

She is worried about the animosity it has caused between neighbors. “They painted the side of their house intentionally to make someone mad,” McMillan said. “It’s a feud and they definitely wanted attention. Robert Lloyd Renfro was born in Eau Claire, Wis., and grew up in Spencer, Iowa, and Kewanee before moving to Glen Ellyn in 1948 and attending Glenbard West High School, Chip Renfro said. Lloyd Renfro attended one year of college at Monmouth College. After attending college for a short time, he entered the Marines during the Korean War and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. Upon returning from the Marines, Renfro helped to run a tire business with his father and uncle based out of La Grange called Renfro Tire. In 1956 the business moved out of La Grange and into downtown Wheaton. A second location was developed in Elmhurst. The family relocated the business in 1962 to 1705 College Ave. in Wheaton,

He was elected to a two-year term in 1990 and a four-year term on the board in 1992. He lost his seat on the board in 1996. Renfro’s character is what made him an important and respected member of the community, according to his son. “Everybody that knew him knew that he was fair and honest,” Chip Renfro said. “That’s the best thing everyone ever told me.” Lloyd Renfro is survived by two sons, Chip and Rob; one sister, Joyce O’Conner; two brothers, Larry and Charley; and three grandchildren. GLEN ELLYN – Former DuPage County Board member and longtime Glen Ellyn resident R. Lloyd Renfro died July 15 after complications stemming from intestinal cancer, his son said. He was 83. Lloyd Renfro was a resident of Glen Ellyn for more than 50 years. He served on the DuPage County Board for 14 years. He had a dedication to the communities he lived in. “It was something that was very prevalent in my family,” said his son, Chip Renfro. Chip Renfro said that not only did his father serve on the DuPage County Board, but Lloyd Renfro’s wife, Phyllis Renfro, served on the Glen Ellyn Village

Board for four years and both his sons served on various boards and committees for the village of Glen Ellyn. Phyllis Renfro died in 2000, Chip Renfro said. DuPage County Trea- R. Lloyd surer Gwen Henry had Renfro the opportunity to work with Lloyd Renfro starting in 1992. She said she and Renfro were on the Solid Waste Committee when she was mayor of Wheaton. Henry said Renfro also was involved with public works as well as the finance committee during his time as a DuPage County Board member. “He served people well beyond his district,” Henry said. “He looked out for the whole county.”

4 COD to vote on presidential search committee, closing Waterleaf By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com The College of DuPage Board of Trustees will be considering some big steps forward in addressing some of its biggest controversies – including replacing the man who brought much of the attention. The board released the agenda for its special board meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 13. The agenda listed a number of big items. Notably, the board will vote on es-

tablishing a search committee to replace embattled President Robert Breuder, who is on administrative leave after a number of state and federal investigations and has been the subject of public scorn after a nearly $763,000 buyout. The Illinois Attorney General also released an opinion on July 24 stating a 2011 contract extension for Breuder violated the Open Meetings Act by not providing adequate public notice. The opinion has led to questions as to whether that would mean the college

may be able to simply fire Breuder before his March 2016 ouster. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said the board wanted to start the long process of a presidential search as soon as possible, but also said the Attorney General opinion reminded everyone the “Breuder era is coming to an end” and the board still wanted to get the buyout money back. The board also will vote on closing the controversial Waterleaf restaurant to transition it to an educational facility. The restaurant’s poor finances and

frequent and expensed use by trustees also became a focal point for criticism. Hamilton said the board also would be briefed on a summary of issues raised by the investment reports the board received prior to the new board leadership coming to power. She previously has said the reports helped allow Thomas Glaser, senior vice president of administration and treasurer, and Lynn Sapyta, assistant vice president of financial affairs and controller – both on administrative leave – to break board investment policy.

Park District board remains uncertain how to proceed with Lake Ellyn project By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Plans to pare down renovations at Lake Ellyn to stay within a $2.9 million budget were met with divisive opinions from the Glen Ellyn Park District board at its Aug. 4 meeting. The commissioners were hoping to stay at about $2.9 million. However, bids came out higher for the project, according to Dave Harris, executive director of the park district.

The district sought bids in early June and received one bid of $3.6 million from Wight & Co. of Darien. To keep the project more affordable and attract competition, the board decided that instead of going with a lump-sum total, it would pay Wight & Co. up to $110,000 to oversee the project as a construction manager and rebid the work by trade. Some board members expressed interest in removing the central corridor at Lake Ellyn and putting in a new path system with permeable pavers.

This would increase the total cost of the project to $3.2 million, as opposed to $2.97 million without the new path. “We set a budget of $2.9 million and we ought to stick with that,” Commissioner Gary Mayo said. “I think it’s something that can easily be done later when funds are available to do that.” Commissioner Kathy Cornell said it would be smart to include the permeable paved corridor with current construction plans. She also said the Citizen’s Finance Committee already has analyzed the

$3.2-million scope of the project and they deem the total construction plausible with possible deferment of other non-essential projects. “I have a lot of confidence in the Citizen’s Finance Committee,” she said. “If they felt that going forward now is a bad idea, they would tell us.” Cornell also said it would make less sense to leave a particular part of the renovation out, only to have to come back to it later.

Planting a garden that supports pollinators can be a very rewarding task and you don’t have to have a large garden to make a difference. The Monarch butterfly has experienced a rapid decline in recent years and if homeowners across the country start planting “Monarch Waystations”, we can help the survival of the species. If you are looking to attract Monarchs there is one plant that you must include in your garden planning: milkweed. Monarch butterfly caterpillars are picky eaters and adult Monarch females lay their eggs on milkweed as it is the only plant larvae will eat! In this area, there are a number of plants you can add to your landscaping which will attract Monarchs, as well as other butterflies, bees, moths and even hummingbirds. Many flowers – especially native plants – are a great source of nectar for adult Monarchs. Choose a spot that receives at least six hours of sun a day, which is required by most butterfly-loving plants. When selecting milkweed, be sure you choose one that appropriate for this area. This includes Common, Swamp, and Whorled milkweed or the vibrant orange Butterfly Weed. In order to attract adult butterflies, add a mix of annuals and perennials that bloom throughout the growing season. For example, you may want to include allium or chives (early season), along with bee balm or black-eyed susan for the mid-season, and aster or sedum (late season). Many of these plants can be picked up at your local nursery and specialty nurseries carry native plants and have knowledgeable staff to www.geparks.org help answer questions.

experiences a reduced tolerance to loud sounds. People who suffer from Dr. Terri Lightbody reduced tolerance to (630) 580-5777 sound often find ordinary noises to be too loud. This condition is typically associated with a hearing loss. When a person experiences hearing loss, which usually comes on gradually over time, a window called the dynamic range becomes smaller and smaller. The dynamic range consists of a floor and ceiling. The floor represents the quietest sound level one can hear. The ceiling represents the loudest sound one can tolerate before it becomes uncomfortably loud. A person with normal range of hearing has a very low floor and very high ceiling. For the person with hearing loss, the floor (quietest sound) is raised, meaning quiet sounds have to become louder in order to be heard.

Reduced tolerance to loud sounds is a common indicator of hearing loss. I am often asked how will hearing aids help in this situation – wouldn’t the hearing aids just make everything louder? The answer is no. Hearing aids don’t make everything loud. They are frequency-specific, programmed to enhance the frequencies the person has difficulty hearing. They have built-in compression and peak clipping systems in hearing aids that are designed to limit the loudness of loud sounds and maintain audibility of soft, quiet sounds. Factors that affect the dynamic range include chronic noise exposure, one time loud noises such as an explosion, aging, Meinere’s disease, certain medications, head injury, and length of time hearing loss has existed without treatment. I recommend that you have a comprehensive hearing evaluation by an Audiologist to determine the state of your hearing and if treatment is necessary.

Immanuel Presbyterian Church

I just read an article today about the citizens of Tinley Park getting together to fight these rigged water meters that they have in their town, and I’m looking at my water bill today, and over the past couple of years, I can’t help but wonder if I’m getting screwed the same way. Has anyone else had this experience where they feel they’re being vastly overcharged for the water that they’re actually using?

Clean up sidewalks

I just wanted to comment about using sidewalks around town. I use sidewalks almost daily between walking to go shopping or running for exercise. I am thankful for the homeowners who limb up their trees and hedge their bushes so the sidewalk is not blocked. It’s a bit annoying when I need to duck down or step around their lawn because of trees and bushes blocking the sidewalk. Not to mention, keeping things pruned nicely adds a little curb appeal to your home.

MODEL YEAR END CLEARANCE EVENT

Shawn Sargent Designs opens up shop in Glen Ellyn By MATT LA LUZ

If you go

mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – When describing her hand-drawn, handmade home decor and gift products, designer Shawn Sargent tends to use one particular adjective: Joyful. After a year of running her business from home, she has moved her joyful products into Bayan Tree Mall, 485 Main St. She opened the doors to her store July 7. Sargent, a self-described “artist by nature” has dabbled in photography, drawing, mixed media and nontraditional materials. She went to school at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and moved to Chicago to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The products at her store all feature her own designs and range from tea towels, pillowcases, gift wrap and snappy purses. “When I was doing this I realized later that it gave me something really joyful to do and it’s a very meditative process,” she said. “When I do

Before moving into downtown Glen Ellyn, artist Shawn Sargent ran her business from home for a year. the drawings, I get lost in the drawings for hours.” Sargent said most of her inspiration for her cheery colorful designs comes from her brother, who died in a car accident. She described her brother as joyful and happy, qualities that she translates into her designs. “It kept that sense of something uplifting and joyful and cheery around, “ she said. “For

me, he was like the light in the room when he walked in.” Sargent also describes her designs as maintaining a middle ground between modern and retro, while appealing to people of all ages. “It suits a lot of different age ranges and genders,” she said. While her brother serves as a lot of the inspiration for her designs, her family has helped

her cultivate her business into a success. Her mother helped her regain her sewing skills and her husband serves as a graphic designer and helps her with labels, logos and packaging. Other established Glen Ellyn business owners have also taken notice of her unique designs and burgeoning business. Jill Foucré, owner of Marcel’s Culinary Experience and upcoming cheese and wine shop Marché, stopped in Sargent’s new shop and was impressed with what she saw. “I thought it was darling,” she said. “I thought that it was really bright and fresh and her

fabrics and designs are very appealing and contemporary.” Foucré also said that Glen Ellyn could use more custom-designed products with those individualized qualities. “I love the individual artwork aspect of it,” she said. “It would be less impactful if she was using pillows making fabric that she purchased, but the fact that she’s designing fabric herself is special.” Foucré said she is excited to have another business in Glen Ellyn and is hopeful the community embraces Shawn Sargent Designs. Sargent also looks forward to the perks of having her business in Glen Ellyn, a town she has grown to love. She hopes to continue to introduce new products and branch out into coffee cups, mugs, customized wallpaper, cellphone cases, bags and decals. Sargent also plans on offering classes ranging from 3-D mixed media, sewing, drawing and design at her location. A grand opening for the store is planned Sept. 18.

Red Stars’ No Longer Unbeaten After 2-1 Loss to Portland Thorns FC come-from-behind win with Long brace Portland Ore. – Allie Long’s two goals helped the Portland Thorns break the Chicago Red Stars six game unbeaten streak on Sunday night. Midfielder Alyssa Mautz had given Chicago the lead in the first half, but it wasn’t enough to fend off Portland. The Thorns took home the three points in front of raucous home crowd, and subsequently put themselves in contention for a playoff spot. Mautz got the Red Starts on the board first with her 29th minute wonder goal. The midfielder ran up the right flank, beat her defender just outside the box, and unleashed a long range shot that floated into the left side of the goal. Less than ten minutes later, the Thorns would capitalize on a miscommunication between Chicago goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc and defender Abby Erceg. There seemed to be a mix up in the box when Erceg went to clear Tobin Heath’s cross, LeBlanc also went to clear the ball and the pair got tangled up, allowing Allie Long to tap the ball into an essentially open net.

second half, but the Thorns defended well. The Red Stars brought in three forwards towards the end of the second half, though each foward was well marked every time they received the ball. Christen Press had four shots in the match, including a beautiful one touch shot from long range that hit the lower left post in the 36th minute. Late in stoppage time Press had what looked like an equalizer, but Portland keeper Michelle Betos pushed the close range shot over the crossbar. The Chicago Red Starts look to restart their winning ways when they face visiting Sky Blue FC on Wednesday, August 12, followed by another home match against leading NWSL goal-scorer Crystal Dunn and fellow title contenders Washington Spirit on Sunday, August 16. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by clicking here or by calling 773-698-6001.

Long netted the lone goal of the second half, sending a low hard shot into the lower left corner of the net. Chicago kept firing through the

She worshiped and was very involved at First Baptist Church, Wheaton, and Seventh Day Adventist Church, Glen Ellyn. Any hardships she may have suffered never shrouded her perpetual faith, good will, bighearted gestures of love and generosity, and her care for other people. She had locks of golden hair which mirrored the sunshine, warmth and love she had. Carol was a friend to all. Everyone at the Convalescent Center knew Carol by name and valued her gentle, helpful spirit. She was a treasured member of that community where she is deeply missed by residents and staff alike. Carol is survived by her 97-year old mother, Doris, of Warrenville, IL; her younger brothers, James (JoAnn) of Beaverton, OR, and Paul (Susan) of Wheaton, IL; her two nephews, William Brinkman (Cambridge, MA), and David Brinkman (Wheaton, IL); nine cousins and numerous friends, including Francine, her “Benihana Buddy”. She was preceded in death by her father, Herbert, in 1986; and all 12 of her aunts and uncles. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 8, 2015, at First Baptist Church, 1310 N. Main Street, Wheaton, IL 60187, (630) 6650330, with visitation from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church, followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. Burial private at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Hillside, IL. Board members had originally discussed only replacing 30 percent of the roof, which would cost $50,000. Replacing the entire roof would cost $120,000. Money for the project will come from capital reserve funds. Board members reviewed 63 bids on Aug. 4, and will pick from the 21 bids with most having two or more trades. The board will decide whether to include the reconstruction of the central corridor with permeable pavers at its Aug. 18 meeting. Approval of the various bids is expected to take place Sept. 1. The project is expected to be completed by mid-June 2016.

Carol Dianne Brinkman, Wheaton, IL, age 68, passed away at 4:50a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2015, at the DuPage Convalescent Center, Wheaton, IL as the apparent result of kidney failure. Carol's parents, Herbert and Doris (Prieb), married after Herb returned from Persia and the Russian front where he served during World War II. Carol, their first of three children and only daughter, was born in Geneva, IL in 1946. Carol grew up in Warrenville, IL near the areas where her ancestors had lived for 175 years. Carol attended Holmes School in Warrenville through 8th grade, and graduated in the top echelon of her Wheaton High School Class of 1964. Carol was a student at Illinois State University at Normal for one year, but transferred to and graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago which she thought would be a more suitable place to challenge her mathematical and intellectual abilities. After college, Carol readily accepted a job offer from Raytheon in Boston, MA but became ill within a short time. She returned to Illinois and ultimately began a long career with AT&T and its successors. She excelled in many computer languages and was a valued employee and colleague throughout her entire career, earning advancements and awards. About 15 years ago, Carol became very ill and was unable to work or live on her own any more. She moved to the DuPage Convalescent Center in year 2000 where she was able to live comfortably, actively and relatively independently for the rest of her life. Carol was a very creative and artistic woman who made many ceramic, painted, wooden and woven works of art at the Convalescent Center. She volunteered in the Donka computer lab and served on the Resident Council. She entered prize-winning vegetables and flowers, arts and crafts each year at the DuPage County Fair and consistently won prizes for her ventures in every area. To top off her awards, Carol received a beautiful trophy this year for scoring a perfect 300 on the Wii virtual bowling game! Carol had her dad's sense of humor - droll and dry - delivered with a hearty smile. She had the spirit of adventure. She traveled to Europe, Egypt, Mexico and many destinations in the U.S. She was also an incredibly loving and doting “Aunt Carol” to her nephews, Bill

Police arrest last suspect from Glen Ellyn Craigslist robbery SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GLEN ELLYN – The final suspect in a robbery that took place in Glen Ellyn in 2014 was arrested on a warrant July 19. LaShawn S. Luke, 19, of Streamwood, was the final suspect to be arrested after the arrests of Kewon Washington, 21, who was arrested on the scene, and Jovan Steven Brown Jr., who was arrested on a warrant Jan. 12, according to police. The incident leading up to their arrests allegedly happened on Sept. 22, 2014, after the victim posted a Craiglist

advertisement to sell his cellphone, according to Deputy Chief Bill Holmer. The three set up a deal to meet in a parking lot in the 300 block of Roosevelt Road at 9 p.m. After meeting up, the three people allegedly beat the other man and tried to steal his phone, Holmer said. Lashawn and Brown fled the scene but were later arrested, Holmer said. Washington was released in February after serving 180 days. Brown posted bond in April, and Luke posted bond in August.

OAK BROOK – When we decided to go off the conventional path in our search for a new restaurant, we gained the added taste of a quick getaway at Oak Brook Hills Resort. The expansive Hilton property on the border of Oak Brook and Westmont features a championship golf course and hotel that is home to Windows restaurant. Regularly open for breakfast and lunch, its evening fine dining experience is available during high seasons, which meant we could enjoy a Saturday date night. A lush blooming landscape accents the fairway views. Technically, the titular windows at the restaurant open onto a glass hallway overlooking a pool, walking path and geyser-style fountain that’s part of a water attraction. Below Windows lies the spacious Chef’s Garden teeming with herbs, vegetables and tomato plants, where a sign notes the daily harvest is designated for fresh dishes in the hotel kitchen. It was a happy portent of rich flavors to follow. Seated in a comfy, tall booth muffling nearby conversation, we settled into the attractive dining room and ordered a butcher’s platter appetizer. Although we picked the smaller size with a choice of two each from an array of gourmet cheeses and cured meats, it arrived with servings ample enough for four or more guests. The delicious items included such standouts as a decadent, house-made salame cotto. Accompaniments vary, and we were treated to artisan pickles with just the right touch of kick, and local honey with honeycomb, which paired beautifully with the triple-cream Brie. For the next course, I was tempted by the sausage and kale soup made with house-made sausage, Parmesan broth, white beans and bacon, but then I spotted the Porter-braised short rib entree. Instead of mustard spaetzle, I asked to substitute

College athletic conferences find convenience in headquarters in Midwest By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The Big Ten Conference’s headquarters in Rosemont are hard to miss from I-294. The conference’s prominent logo sits on the side of a building facing the highway from the east and is just across the highway from O’Hare International Airport. However, the Midwest’s biggest, most news-grabbing conference isn’t the only one based in Chicago’s suburbs. The Summit League, a Division I conference which claims Western Illinois as the only in-state member, is headquartered in a mixed-use office building on Butterfield Road in Elmhurst. The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, a Division III league which includes Elmhurst College, Wheaton College and North Central College among its eight members, is based in Naperville. So what drew these leagues to base themselves in Chicago’s suburbs? For the CCIW, it was a matter of convenience. The league moved its office to the campus of North Central College in Naperville in 2002, the same year that Chris Martin took over as commissioner of the league. The previous commissioner was a long-time athletic administrator at Millikin University and the league was based out of that school’s Decatur home until the move. Martin said the North Central campus in downtown Naperville has been a great host. “The office was moved to Naperville for two reasons – being close to Chicago and because it is centrally located,” Martin said. “All of the CCIW schools are within easy driving distance. We host nearly all of the conference meetings at North Central. … I don’t think it’s any surprise that our office resides in the area since the CCIW schools recruit heavily in the area.” The Big Ten has a history of being located in the Chicago suburbs. The conference was founded in Chicago in 1896 and has maintained its roots near-

The conference had a home in Schaumburg for 18 years before moving closer to O’Hare to a location in Park Ridge in 1991. In 2013, the league moved to its new headquarters in Rosemont, which is a short drive just southwest of the Park Ridge building. The reason for that move, as explained by Deputy Commissioner Brad Traviolia, was largely because they had outgrown the Park Ridge space. “We just needed to expand so we looked at options of leasing space and buying existing buildings and came across an opportunity to build a new headquarters in Rosemont,” Traviolia said. The new MB Financial Park at Rosemont, which includes the Big Ten’s headquarters, features hotels, restau-

rants and bars, providing guests a good place to visit. “It’s the biggest market of Big Ten alumni in the country. We were able to attract and attain a very solid workforce with Chicago and Chicagoland being the backdrop, and with O’Hare being so close it’s easy to be a hub,” Traviolia said. “We have meetings and it’s easy to host them with all the accommodations here for them.” Given that the conference wanted to remain in the Chicago area and had enjoyed being close to O’Hare already, the number of potential locations seemed narrow. Traviolia said the factors included being able to handle the growth of the staff and improving the meeting experience for guests. “It’s a neat opportunity with Rose-

mont,” Traviolia said. “They had to reinvent what this area was and it serves very well with the proximity to hotels and restaurants. ... It’s worked out really nice for us.” The market size and having two major airports was also a draw for other leagues. The Summit League was founded in 1982 and at one time included schools such as UIC and Valparaiso as members. The league has gone through some changes – it was once known as the Mid-Continent Conference and membership has fluctuated slightly over the years – but moving the headquarters out of Elmhurst was never a consideration.

started by Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple in 2004 to give several then-independent football-playing schools a league in which to play. Eventually, Ed Grom, a former Associate Commissioner of The Summit League, took over as Great West Commissioner and moved the headquarters to Naperville. The

Great West has since folded with the member schools aligning with other conferences. “The Great West Conference was a conglomeration of independent schools who just moved up to Division I,” said David Brauer, Summit League Assistant Commissioner for Communications. “We helped them schedule games and gave them a league circuit.”

Continued from page 22 Western Illinois in Macomb, IUPUI and Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne are all about three hours from headquarters, while the University of Denver, Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla., and North Dakota State represent the farther reaches of the nine-team league, but being headquartered in Elmhurst is a plus. “With the two airports here, it gives us access to get anywhere, so that’s a huge benefit,” Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple said. “Being close to the eastern schools in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, we can drive there and to Macomb. It really serves as a neutral headquarters, which is a positive.” Douple, who is entering his 11th year as Summit League Commissioner, said that twice a year, presidents, athletic directors and other administrators from the member school scome to the Elmhurst area to meet, and a third meeting takes place at the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments that take place concurrently in March at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. Throughout the year, Summit League officials visit the member schools on a regular basis, at least once a month according to Douple, so easy access to transportation hubs is a key. Being close to Indianapolis, site of NCAA headquarters, is also beneficial, and that proximity helped Douple serve on the NCAA leadership council and on the certification and championships committees. In the shifting landscape of college athletics, however, successfully running a conference takes more than just setting up meetings a few times a year.

Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com

Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple talks about the athletic conference Aug. 6 in the league’s Elmhurst offices. Douple is entering his 11th year as commissioner. Following NCAA compliance guidelines is a constant endeavor, as is planning the Summit League’s 19 sports championships throughout the year. Part of Douple’s job is looking for new members. Sometimes that could mean an institution reaches out to him about membership, but more often it entails Douple identifying potential candidates. In recent years, he has successfully helped the University of Nebraska-Omaha, among others, make the move from NCAA Division II to Division I as Summit League members. Successfully ushering schools to the Division I level is one of the highlights of Douple’s tenure. “We have a number of things we’re really proud of, but bringing in a number of

institutions from the Division II level that have adjusted extremely well and are very competitive at the Division I level is something we’re very proud of because it shows we identified them to begin with as really good Division I schools and now it’s been proven over the course of time,” he said. The college conference landscape changed dramatically a few years ago when major leagues such as the Big Ten, SEC and Big 12 added schools. Those changes affected some of the smaller conferences, but the Summit League made it through the shakeup and has a bright future ahead of it, according to Douple. “[The future is] very bright. We have schools that are real-

ly committed to academics and athletics. Last year I think we had five new or renovated basketball arenas that were being built or just coming on line. ... North Dakota State is building a new arena, South Dakota State is going to refurbish their arena, the University of South Dakota is building a whole new arena, and this fall Omaha will move into their new basketball arena. “Schools don’t make a commitment to build these multi-million dollar arenas if they’re not serious about being competitive and improving their programs. I think that in itself speaks volumes about the future of the league.”

Staff writers Dan Santaromita and Scott Schmid contributed to this report.

on a show By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The premier event for The Summit League is the men’s and women’s basketball championship tournaments hosted at the same time as the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center each March in South Dakota. The hoops tournaments are just two of 19 championships the conference runs each year, and setting them up is a year-round endeavor for Myndee Kay Larsen, Senior Associate Commissioner for The Summit League. “As soon as a championship is over we’re already figuring out who the next host will be and we start with them immediately to get facilities booked and hotels targeted, so that’s kind of the first thing, getting it on the calendar and making sure we have everything planned,” Larsen said. “Then throughout the year we’re checking on hospitality, officials, security and all the things that go into an event and right before we’re gearing up and heading out. It’s a process that goes over the whole year.” Even though the basketball tournaments, which USA Today billed as the best-kept secret of March Madness, have a permanent home in Sioux Falls, S.D., that doesn’t make planning them any easier for Larsen. In fact, planning the league’s main attraction takes a little extra work. “We do our men’s and women’s basketball as a joint event so all our presidents, athletic directors and media can all come to one place, so it’s huge. Eight men’s teams, eight women’s teams spread over a fourday event,” Larsen said. “The games are the main show, but there’s a lot of other things going on. For our league, since we don’t sponsor football, basketball is our premier event and is the one that gets the most national attention with the NCAA Tournament and March Madness, so we try to make it live up to those standards.”

In addition to The Summit League, the CCIW and the Big Ten, there is another active conference in the suburbs, and another one that was formerly based in the suburbs. The Division III Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League, which was established in 2014

and includes North Central College and Benedictine University, is based in Naperville. CCIW Commissioner Chris Martin also heads that league, which includes other Illinois schools as well as institutions in Iowa, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.
