Continued from page 1 Randy Poole, treasurer of the Lions Club and co-chair of the festival, is excited about this year’s festival. “It’s culturally cool,” he said. “It’s just a nice, fun summer festival and there are lots of really interesting things to look at and hopefully buy.” This will mark the first year the festival will be hosted at Maryknoll Park. Traditionally, the festival has been hosted at Lake Ellyn Park but had to be moved this year because of construction. Poole said the move to Maryknoll Park will come with the perks of increased on-site parking and a more spacious and traditional grid-like art fest layout. “Everyone is excited about it,” he said. “There’s no apprehension about having it there.” Poole expects around 3,000 guests to visit the festival throughout the weekend. Planning for the festival began as early as December 2014 when applica-

One of the artists featured in the show is Glen Ellyn resident George Ceffalio, an oil painter who will feature 12 to 20 of his art pieces in the festival. Ceffalio previously won a best in show award and two other awards at the festival, which he has participated in since 2007. Being a local, he felt obligated to do the show. He also enjoys the camaraderie between artists and the chance to speak to visitors. “When you do this for a number of years, you start to see people over and over again,” he said. “You’re always striving to get your name out there and hopefully more and more people see your work.” He said the Festival of the Arts is one of the better art festivals in terms of scenery and the art, music and activities featured at the festival. The festival also will feature jazz, Latin, contemporary and various other genres of musical acts. Food and beverages also will be available. All proceeds from the festival will go toward the Glen Ellyn Lions Foundation, which helps provide eye exams, eyeglasses and hearing screening to low-income residents of Glen Ellyn.

with arthrogryposis amyoplasia, a muscular skeletal disorder that affects her legs and causes chronic hip pain. According to her swim coach Chris del Galdo, Lettenberger has refused to allow her disability to get in the way of her goals, so much so that even team members don’t realize she has one. “She makes it so easy that I often forget she has a disability, and I don’t treat her that way,” he said. Lettenberger trained with the Wheaton Swim Club, practicing twice a day, in order to prep for the games. She had a two-hour morning practice and a one-hour practice in the evening. Del Galdo said Lettenberger would swim between 5,000 to 6,000 meters in the mornings and afternoons and would focus on about 3,500 yards of sprints and technique work. Lettenberger began swimming at age 11 and started

competing in para-swimming at 12. She became a member of the U.S. Paralympics swim team roster as an emerging athlete in 2014, and was the youngest member of the emerging team. She started out playing softball and soccer before settling on swimming as her sport of choice after a school nurse pointed out an article about Alyssa Gialamas, a prominent athlete with arthrogryposis. Lettenberger said she has enjoyed competing in para-swimming events. She even met a swimmer in the Parapan games who has the same condition as her. “It was really cool to meet someone just like me,” she said. Lettenberger’s mom, Anna, said she is amazed at the journey her daughter is on and hopes she will continue to possess the same spirit and determination moving forward. “Life may give you lemons, but she has a great way of making lemonade out of it,” Anna Lettenberger said. Ahalya Lettenberger’s next goal is to compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She hopes to prep for trials in North Carolina, which will take place in June and July 2016.

She spent two weeks in Toronto, with four days of training and seven days of competition. Lettenberger won a gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke. She took fourth place in the 400-meter freestyle with a personal best time. She also got personal best times in the 200-meter individual medley and 100-meter breaststroke. Lettenberger was born

COD board to vote on Breuder ouster Aug. 20 By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com After months of controversy and weeks of legal questions, the Robert Breuder era at the College of DuPage may officially be at its end. According to board documents released Aug. 18, the College of DuPage Board of Trustees will begin the process of firing the contro- Robert versial president. Breuder “The board believes that it is in the best interests of the college to commence proceedings to terminate the employment of the college president,” board documents for the Aug. 20 Board of Trustees meeting said. Breuder has been one of the symbols for controversy surrounding the college, from his nearly $763,000 buyout approved by the board in January 2015, to college, federal and state investigations opened against his spending of college dollars.

“COD’s president has been on administrative leave pending the result of our investigations. The investigations have resulted in this proposed action for board consideration,” board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said in a statement. To approve Breuder’s termination, the board requires a supermajority – something hard to come by on this board, which repeatedly has been split 4-3 along the old board and the reform-oriented Clean Slate. The board also will be voting to ask the DuPage County State’s Attorney to pursue enforcement of a July opinion from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office that said the board violated the Open Meetings Act in a 2011 contract extension for Breuder. Trustees have avoided commenting on whether the nonbinding opinion has any legal bearing on Breuder’s contract. Glen Ellyn OKs funding for new police station Facility construction budget will not exceed $12M limit By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The Glen Ellyn Village Board has approved plans to develop a new police station. At its Aug. 17 meeting, the board approved a budget amendment for the issuance of general obligation bonds to provide funds for the police station project. The board also unanimously selected a design and build team. The board entered into a maximum price contract, which means the design and build team cannot go over the established amount of $12 million set for the police facility. The board approved Leopardo and Dewberry, two Chicago firms, to handle the design and build aspects of the project, which includes construction management, design, engineering and all further services as identified. Leopardo will handle the construction. Dewberry, working as the subcontractor on the project, will handle architecture. “Ultimately, this is really going to pay off for the community,” Police Chief Phil Norton said.

The design and build team was recommended by a selection committee composed of Norton, Deputy Chief Bob Acton, village attorney Greg Mathews, Village Manager Mark Franz and Trustees Dean Clark and Tim O’Shea. The building, which the board hopes will have a minimum 50-year lifespan, will be funded through a bond sale of $13.4 million. The remaining money from the bond will be used on stormwater management to reduce flooding at Lake Ellyn, according to board documents. The new station will be located at Panfish Park, south of Roosevelt Road on Park Boulevard, according to Deputy Chief Bill Holmer. The village already owns the land. According to village documents, insurance costs and bond costs will be calculated at 1 percent of the total cost of the project. Leopardo will receive a design fee of 2.5 percent of the cost of the work. Dewberry already had done work for the village in 2011, when it performed a space needs study and presented its findings to the Village Board. The findings indicated the department should have about 42,000 square feet of space, according to Holmer. The Civic Center space allows the department

about 11,000 square feet, according to village documents. The new facility is expected to handle challenges related to space, storage, security and close parameters in which suspects mingled with employees. Overall, board members were satisfied with the work that the selection committee did in selecting the design and build team. “I was amazingly struck by the detail the selection committee put in and the effort they put in,” Trustee Mark Senak said. “They should be commended for the work.” In order to offer incentives to the design and build team to keep the project at a lower cost, the village has agreed to split any savings with Leopardo. If the construction comes in under budget, Leopardo will get 30 percent of the savings and the village would keep the remaining 70 percent. Mathews assured the board that whatever changes may be made to the project, the board would have to approve any price increase, if needed. “The board would have to approve the change of scope before the price goes up,” he said. “Whatever is designed and whatever the village chooses to go forward with, we’ll have to make decisions along the way.’

The Glenbard Township High School District 87 Board of Education approved a new science addition for Glenbard West High School.

District 87 board approves addition to Glenbard West By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com

GEN

GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard Township High School District 87 approved a $10.5 million contract with Walsh Construction Co. on Aug. 10 to proceed with building a new science wing addition at Glenbard West High School. The total expected cost of the project is $16.5 million, which will be funded through referendum bonds and the district’s operating budget. The $10.5 million will be divided, with about $8.9 million going toward the construction of the addition and $1.6 million going toward interior renovations, which will include having six science labs converted to eight general education classrooms to help with overcrowding. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing work for the project will cost around $5.7 million and will be handled by Performance Service Inc. Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Chris McClain said there will be some logistical challenges moving forward as the school is

an urban campus on top of a hill. “We want to make sure the construction site is secure and safe so workers can do their job,” McClain said. Some of the challenges presented include how to handle bus traffic as buses enter from the west side of the building and exit on the east side, where construction of the addition will take place. Two proposed solutions, according to McClain, are building a fence that would be monitored by a gatekeeper who would allow buses to pass through, or possibly changing the route of the buses. The school district also has worked to appease community members who have expressed concern about preserving the George Zahrobsky Botanical Garden at the east end of the school, where the construction will happen. “I feel like we’ve listened and we have acted,” McClain said. “Some of the community members that were really worried about it, I hope they appreciate the work that we’ve done.”

Q & A with the Hearing Doctor 7 Myths You Need to Know

Q: What are some of the misconceptions

about hearing aids?

A: Here are seven myths that can prevent you

from seeking professional help to treat hearing loss.

Myth #1: Hearing aids make people look old. Most hearing aids today are discreet, right down Dr. Terri Lightbody to the “invisible” style and (630) 580-5777 typically go unnoticed by others. More importantly, when a person constantly says “Hmmm?” “What?”, that makes a person look old. Myth #2: Hearing aids whistle and make noise. Feedback (whistling) is the thing of the past as most digital hearing aids have feedback cancellation algorithms while at the same time, have significantly increased power levels of hearing aids. Myth #3: Hearing aids make my voice sound different. Good! I say. The way a person hears with hearing loss isn’t normal hearing. Once new sounds are re-introduced to the auditory system, the brain adjusts to it. Your voice should sound different with hearing aids, which means

speech is clearer. Myth #4: Hearing aids are expensive. This misconception arises from only seeing a lump sum amount with a one-time purchase. Hearing aids can range from $1,400 to $3,600 a piece. Cell phone rates average $110 per month, over 5 years amounts to $6,600! Myth #5: Hearing aids can’t help me. No one is beyond help. There are hearing aids designed to fit mild, moderate, severe, or profound losses that can improve your ability to hear and enjoy life more. Myth #6: You can save time and money by buying hearing aids from big box retailers. Buying hearing aids from nonaudiology practices is risky. By working with an audiologist, you get professional care and services to ensure proper diagnosis and hearing aid fitting. You actually pay less in the long run. Myth #7: You can wait until your hearing loss gets worse. Waiting is never the answer. “Putting up” with a hearing problem makes life more difficult for you and your loved ones.

As one who also exercised my First Amendment rights to publicly criticize Israel for what I believed were war crimes in their disproportionate bombing of civilian areas, I’m disturbed that our venerated state university would shred free speech, stifle academic freedom and disgrace the aims of education to placate wealthy, pro-Israeli donors who essentially said, “Dump Salaita or lose our six-figure dough.” Now the meter is running on the tab we taxpayers will have to pay for the cowardice and stupidity of administrators Wise, Pierre and the Board of Trustees, who allowed themselves to be duped into carrying water for special interests, who will trash our most cherished democratic principles to prevent criticism of Israel, regardless of its validity.

Some of that work includes the relocation of an emergency generator, which originally was expected to go on an outside patio, but now will be stored inside the science addition’s mechanical room. This will reduce noise, save some of the trees around the area and will keep the generator from being worn down from outdoor elements. Moving the generator inside also will allow the district to shift the retaining wall and cooling tower closer to the addition, which will save trees and reduce the amount of hill excavation required for the project.

You’ll be improving Native American studies at U of I. You will be saving us beleaguered taxpayers from paying for your folly. You will be enhancing, not disgracing, free speech and academic freedom. Let Salaita Twitter away ... and stop being twits.

I suspect if Professor Salaita were teaching in 1930s Germany, he’d be the sort of patriot who would speak out against Nazi anti-Semitism. Of course, that would have ended his academic career just like his Twitter posts did to him here. But just because 21st-century academia didn’t send him to a gulag and an early Walt Zlotow death, it doesn’t excuse the wrong done Glen Ellyn

Members of the Illinois chapter of the Sierra Club also performed a plant rescue from July 24 to 26 and saved around 500 plants from the George Zahrobsky Botanical Garden. Overall, many board members are excited to continue with the project, which is pivotal to the start of a 10-year master facility plan for all District 87 schools that will include $100 million in work. “It’s well-needed,” District 87 Board of Education President Rich Heim said. “A state-of-the-art science space was absolutely identified as part of the master facility plan and necessary.” The district plans to break ground on the project within the coming weeks, with completion of the project expected by August 2016.

Scared of smart tech

To the gentleman that is worried about his water meter being rigged – I’m really more concerned about the new smart electric meter. It was the smart water meter that caused all the problems down in Tinley Park, and now that we have the smart electric meters up here, do we have to worry about the same problem? It scares me.

Teaching is tough

The plumber vs. teacher argument is not a valid comparison when it comes to pay. Plumbers, like other important professionals such as electricians, administrative assistants and registered nurses, are paid hourly. However, teachers are paid a salary regardless of how many hours they work during the school year, and they don’t get paid overtime. My wife used to be a high school English teacher with five classes that included four different writing courses. After dinner she would work until 10 or 11 p.m. every night reading and grading the never-ending pile of student essays. That time was also used to prepare the lessons and assignments for five classes the next day, and so it goes, night after night, day after day, and weekends, too. Salaried jobs require you to complete your job duties no matter how much time it takes. Teachers don’t just show up at school, stand in front of a group of students and go home. Teachers do not get paid for the summer off, they get paid for the difficult job that they do during the school year, and it baffles me why talented young people would even want a difficult teaching job given the measly starting salaries that are now being offered. So let’s hope they continue to pursue a teaching career for your children’s and your grandchildren’s sake.

Ranking national threats

President Obama in a speech a few months ago said that global warming is the biggest threat to our nation. Really. What about ISIS? What about Iran in getting a nuclear weapon. Aren’t these bigger problems? Incidentally, the climate has fluctuated for many years. If you watch the weather on TV, they always show the record highs for a given date and temperatures were always higher years ago.

An early presidential vote

To those of you trying to decide for whom to vote in the 2016 presidential election, it’s as simple as ABC – Anybody But Clinton!

Protesting violent protesters

To all you brainless people who are staging protests by destroying and looting stores, do you think that we want to listen to you?

Thoughts on teacher salaries

Teachers are like any other profession: The good ones are underpaid and the bad ones are overpaid. If kids can’t wait to get to school because they love their teacher, and those kids are motivated to excel, that teacher is underpaid regardless of actual salary. If kids don’t like their teacher because the teacher can’t or won’t help with difficult material and kids lose motivation to achieve, that teacher is overpaid.

One hundred years ago, there were many vices of human nature that were all legal. Now, many or all of those vices have become illegal, such as narcotics, gambling and prostitution. … The human condition being as it is very complex in the 21st century, it is time again to legalize narcotics, prostitution and gambling like it is in most places in Europe. This would eliminate huge black markets, huge gang problems and so much violence. Red-light districts should be set up in all major cities and thereabouts to help this. Stop trying to control human behavior based on repressing human behavior and creating a fascist state that is in America today.

YEAR sr. jr. sr. sr. jr.

Outlook: Glenbard South is coming off the best season in program history, which included a Metro Suburban Conference championship, regional and sectional titles and a runner-up finish in the Class 2A state tournament. Now the only question is, what can the Raiders do for an encore? Expectations certainly are high for 2015, with the team returning three of its top six golfers from a year ago, including senior Russell Matos, who placed fifth individually at state. Also back is Christopher Dufort, who came in 40th, and Jake Seaver. “They have the experience to help lead and develop some of our more inexperienced players,” coach Scott Iliff said. “I do not feel I am over-reaching when I say I think we can win conference and qualify through the state series to get the team to the [state tournament].”

Glenbard South’s Russell Matos watches his shot during sectional tournament play last season. Matos and the Raiders will be looking to build on their top-five finishes at state this season. Outlook: The Hilltoppers were one spot away from advancing to the sectional as a team last fall, placing fourth at the Wheaton North regional. Glenbard West did have a pair of individuals move on in Kevin Nelson and Jacob Valdick, and that duo returns in 2015 for their junior campaigns. “We should be better,” coach Paul Hezlett said. “We are returning three varsity starters from 2014. Our goal is to be competitive with every West Suburban Conference team and improve upon our 2-5 conference record [from last year]. The conference is expected to again be extremely challenging, with defending state champion Hinsdale Central leading the way and Lyons Township and York also fielding strong teams. LT and York finished in the top 10 in the state last year.

Outlook: St. Francis returns this fall off an outstanding 2014 campaign that culminated with a sectional championship and a fifth-place state finish in Class 2A. The Spartans bring back their top two scorers from state in Jonathan Nocek, who came in 11th individually, and Connor Buckley, who placed 40th. “I am very excited for this season,” coach Greg Baresel said. “We have a good core of seniors returning from our state team and we should compete well at conference and during the state series.” One major change for St. Francis this fall is the Spartans are competing in the Chicago Catholic League. “This will be new territory for us,” Baresel said. “We are looking to be

Outlook: Wheaton Academy captured the Class 2A Mendota regional title a year ago and brings back two Metro Suburban all-conference selections from the 2014 group in Grant Gosden and Kyle Bertsche. The Warriors must find a way to replace the scoring of Zack Spear, a 2014 state qualifier. “This year’s team has some great returning talent,” coach Scott Broman said. “We are hungry to carry last year’s momentum into this year.”

wide of the same upright on a long-range effort in the 68th minute, pouncing on an opening following a well-weighted Vanessa DiBernardo corner from the right that forced Spirt shot-stopper Kelsey Wys to awkwardly palm the ball to the edge of the box. The third time was the charm for the Red Stars in the second half, as they tied things up eight minutes from the end of regulation. Alyssa Mautz found herself with room as she sprinted toward the right side of the area, but instead of attempting to drive to the endline, she surprised the opposition with a clever out-swinging cross into space that allowed substitute Tancredi to shake off her marker and send a glancing header past Wys and inside the left post. The goal visibly served to energize the hosts, who should have grabbed the lead in the 88th minute. Tancredi very nearly put away her second when another DiBernardo corner from the right was headed back across at the far post by another substitute, Abby Erceg, and the Canada ace nodded the ball toward the left post, only to see it slapped off the line courtesy of a stunning reflex save by Wys. Instead of jubilation, the Chicago players, staff and fans experienced ruthless cruelty a mere five minutes after the massive opportunity. Deep inside stoppage time, the ever-dangerous Dunn seemed to be left with few options inside the Red Stars half but made exactly the right decision by taking on several opposition defenders, her last ditch shot sending the ball skipping off the turf and inside the left post for a precision finish. The late tally left the home side with little time to respond, as Washington held on for a dramatic road win. The Chicago Red Stars expect their World Cup champs Christen Press, Julie Johnston and Lori Chalupny back from the U.S. Women’s victory tour in time for the August 23 clash with visiting Western New York Flash. Lisle, Ill. – The Chicago Red Stars fell 2-1 to visiting Washington Spirit on Sunday night, courtesy of a dramatic stoppage-time goal by forward Crystal Dunn. The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) goalscoring leader found the net against the run of play, as Melissa Tancredi’s equalizer for Chicago in the closing stages of regulation time had seen her side grab all the momentum and push for three points. Washington’s Megan Oyster scored the day’s first goal in the opening moments of the game. The Spirit could have had an even earlier lead, as a nice one-two between Dunn and Nigeria striker Francisca Ordega in the second minute sent Dunn through one-one-one with Canada goalkeeping legend Karina LeBlanc, who rushed off her line to come up with an outstanding block. The visitors did take the lead on the ensuing corner kick, Nairn driving the ball in from the left and finding the head of Oyster, who nodded it down and inside the left upright to leave LeBlanc without a chance. 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup star Ordega had the next close look for the Spirit, as she dispossessed defender Samantha Johnson in a dangerous area and drove into the box, only to see her wellstruck attempt whistle just wide of the right post. Meanwhile, the Red Stars took until the half-hour mark to create a noteworthy chance, as Sofia Huerta sent Taryn Hemmings up the right flank and the outside back’s centering pass was fired just wide of the near post on a first-time effort by Jen Hoy. It would be Washington back on the attack five minutes later. A fast break saw Ordega sprint into the penalty area on the left and dribble past two defenders before releasing a powerful effort that was too hot for netminder LeBlanc to control on the first try. Chicago came out of the break with increased urgency, and Head Coach Rory Dames’ team created a promising look in the 53rd minute. Johnson picked out Huerta in the opposition half and the rookie did well to flick the ball on to Rachel Quon, whose drive from the left side of the box whizzed just past the far post. Teammate Danielle Colaprico fired narrowly

Outlook: Last season was one to remember for Wheaton Academy, which captured a conference championship and Class A regional title before going on to finish 10th at the state tournament. From that group, the Warriors bring back their top three scorers at state – Hailey Farmer, Lauren Isenhart and Meredith Bult – along with state tourney players Chrislyn Herring and Brooke Nickell. “We only lost one of our top six so I am excited to see what they accomplish this year,” coach Haley Martin said. “We would really like to make it to state again and finish higher than we did last year.”
