Helping Improve Lives in Grundy County for 70 Years United Way of Grundy County is celebrating 70 years in Grundy County. There have been many changes over the years but one thing has remained; the mission to “help improve lives.” Founded in 1946 as the “Community Chest,” a group of local individuals came together to make a difference in the community. The campaign goal at that time was $1,800 which supported three local nonprofit agencies. By the 1960’s, the Community Chest opened its first office in the Baum Building in Morris. The campaign awareness and support continued to grow throughout the 60’s and more funds were being raised to support those in need in the community. The efforts of the campaign also included helping those serving overseas as care packages were shipped to sailors. By the late 60’s, almost $55,000 was being raised to fund eight local notfor-profit agencies in Grundy County. In 1970, the name was changed to “Grundy County United Fund, Inc.” Over $60,000 was raised which supported ten local not-for-profit agencies. By the end of the 70’s, the funds raised almost doubled and four additional agencies received funding to support a variety of new programs in the County. The 1980’s brought about many new opportunities for the United Fund. Support continued to increase from raising more than $150,000 to ending the era with nearly $300,000 raised, which supported 19 local not-for-profit agencies. The 80’s also included appearances and involvement from the Chicago Bears; including Dan Hampton, Mike Singletary, Emery Moorehead, and Kurt Becker. In the 90’s, needs in the community increased and the campaign continued to raise more funds to meet those needs. By the end of the 90’s, nearly $375,000 was being raised, which supported 23

local agencies. Throughout the previous years, the Community Chest / United Fund was solely governed and managed by the volunteer Board of Directors. Due to the increased work of processing funds and grants to the agencies, in 1999 the first staff member, Diane Rooney, was hired as an Administrative Assistant. In 2002, the name was changed to the “United Way of Grundy County.” The campaign goal was more than $330,000 which supported 21 local non-profit agencies due to an increased need for services. Many changes took place during this era. In 2006, the office moved to the Morris Business & Technology Building where it remains today. The first Executive Director position was added to the staff. Coleen Davis held that role until 2008. Kelli Walker became the second Executive Director and played an essential role in helping establish the first Back to School Fair in Grundy County. In late 2010, Karen Nall became the

new Executive Director and in 2011 the first Associate Director position was developed in order to establish a succession planning for the organization. Kelly (Bols) Olson was hired for that position, followed by Cindy Perryman in 2013. Recently, Teddy Dow joined the staff as the newest Associate Director. By 2014, more funds were being raised to support programs and services provided by now, 29 local agencies. The United Way realized a surplus for several years consecutively during these years. The additional funds raised were awarded to several local agencies by way of mini grants that totaled nearly $100,000. Some of the funds were also used to establish a Disaster Relief Fund. The United Way of Grundy County is currently raising nearly $500,000, supporting 32 local non-profit agencies that provide more than 50 vital programs and services to the more than 49,000 residents in Grundy County.

Over the last 70 years, the donors continue to be true philanthropists in every sense of the word. Without the support from the community, the United Way would not be able to “help improve lives.” The annual campaign money raised stays local. It is because of the donors that United Ways is able to support a variety of vital programs and services in Grundy County. Many of the donors have supported the annual campaign for more than ten years, 20 years, and some more than that.

Companies contribute a lot of assistance to many agencies throughout the year during their Days of Caring. In addition to donating funds, part of a company’s social responsibility could include their employees volunteering for various projects. This is a great way to help an agency complete projects that they may not be able to finish themselves due to lack of staff, expertise, or time. In addition, this also gives the company and its employees an opportunity to strengthen their involvement in the community. There is always a variety of agency projects available throughout the year. Companies interested in coordinating a Care Day should contact the United Way of Grundy County
