IN THE CITY OF
Historic Pride Illinois is the nation's most populous inland state. Its successful growth is due in large part to the Illinois and Michigan Canal, a revolutionary development that linked the Great Lakes to the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. The I&M Canal was vital to the development of the great City of Chicago and to the economic development of the Midwest; the Canal also fostered the growth of the small settlement that became the City of Lockport. The beautiful Des Plaines River Valley was a portage site for the Des Plaines River for the Miami and Potawatomi, and famed explorers Joliet and Marquette traversed the region on their journeys.

THE CROSS-ROADS OF MID-AMERICA
A
t the height of the I&M Canal’s popularity in 1882, well over a million tons of lumber, stone and grain passed through the locks of Joliet. These goods, and in-turn this pivotal canal town, would help transform Illinois from an upstart prairie community into an economic and cultural powerhouse. Nestled on the banks of the DuPage and Des Plaines Rivers, with half-a-dozen smaller waterways criss-crossing the city, Joliet quickly became a major hub for transportation and manufacturing in Illinois, earning it the nickname “The Cross-Roads of Mid-America”. Arts and culture soon followed the arrival of industries like quarries, lumber

yards and, later, steel mills. Almost overnight, Joliet grew into one of the most populous towns along the canal, second only in size to the City of Chicago. Today, Joliet is still steeped in this rich canal history and lore. You’ll find traces of the past in places like the city’s scenic nature areas and public parks, in the boutique shops, restaurants and entertainment venues housed in their vintage downtown buildings, as well as in the museums and historic sites dedicated to preserving the legacy of this sprawling, and authentic, canal town destination! Join us as we highlight some of the places where you can connect with the past, and experience the bright future of Joliet!

CITY OF EXCITEMENT HISTORIC PLACES AND NATURAL SPACES The best place to begin your Joliet I&M Canal journey is on the Gaylord Donnelley Trail, a beautiful stretch of the modern recreational canal path that runs from Lockport into the heart of the city. On this 11-mile partially paved trail, that parallels the original canal bed and towpath, you’ll encounter the remnants of aqueducts, lock gates and other infrastructure, dating back nearly two centuries. This easy to navigate trail is the perfect family-friendly biking spot and a hands-on way to familiarize yourself with the waterway that shaped the city of Joliet. The Gaylord Donnelley Trail can be accessed via 10th Street in Lockport or at the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site. Perched along the banks of the canal, just a few blocks north of the city’s beautiful downtown, you’ll find the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site. This 52-acre preserve was once home to the second largest steel mill in the United States, and one of Joliet’s defining industries during the latter days of the canal. Ironically enough, the mill also played a key role in bringing about the end of the I&M Canal. At this factory thousands of miles worth of railroad rails were rolled out, beginning in 1873, helping to jumpstart the industry that would soon replace the famed waterway. Within just a few short years Joliet Iron and Steel Co. rails could be found on train lines across the nation. Despite this boom, the mill shuttered its doors by the early 1900’s. Unable to compete with growing operations on the east coast, mother nature began slowly reclaiming the grounds. That is until the Forest Preserve District of Will County acquired the land in mid-90’s and started the process of converting the mill’s ruins, including the original blast furnaces and other structures from the days of the canal, into a fascinating self-guided interpretive site with .59 miles of paved recreation trails!

Just north of the Joliet Iron Works, you’ll find another icon of the I&M Canal era, The Old Joliet Prison. Originally constructed in 1858, this gigantic limestone penitentiary remained in operation until 2002, and has famously been featured in movies like The Blues Brothers. This facility isn’t just steep in fascinating pop-culture history; in its early years, Joliet held a mixture of regional offenders and Civil War POWs. After its closure, operation of the vacant facility was taken over by the Joliet Area Historical Museum, who now offer a series of special guided tours at the famed correctional facility. Particularly fascinating are the Guard Tours, led by retired prison employees, who share the ins and outs, and first hand accounts, of life inside this famed prison! Tours are strongly recommended for guests age 16+, all minors must be accompanied by a guardian. To see a full listing of tours, visit jolietmuseum.org No trip along the I&M Canal is complete without a visit to Joliet’s Lower Rock Run Preserve. Part of the extensive Rock Run Preservation System, this 372-acre park is a natural oasis of untouched forest, prairie, savannah and wetland, the very same habitats that lined the waterway when it first opened to the public in 1848. Situated right on the banks of the canal, with easy access to the State Trail, this park is brimming with a variety of hard to find plant species and wildlife, from white water lilies to eastern kingbirds. The park’s 11.24 mile paved Rock Run Greenway Trail is suitable for a wide variety of family friendly nature activities like biking, hiking, in-line skating, crosscountry skiing and even snowshoeing. You’ll find two access points to the park, one on Channahon Road and the other on McClintok Road.

ORIGINA C
locking in at over 96 miles long, stretching from the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago all the way to LaSalle-Peru in the West, it’s hard to imagine that the I&M Canal was dug entirely by hand, between the years of 1836 and 1848. One of the biggest civil engineering projects of its day, the construction of this monumental marvel came with an enormous price tag. To offset this, pay for upkeep and the salaries of lock attendants, the Canal Commission established four toll offices along the route. “They were located in Ottawa, Lockport, Chicago and LaSalle, but that toll house closed shortly after opening,” said Arnie
22
HeritageCorridorCVB.com
Bandstra, the lead volunteer at Ottawa’s surviving toll house. “The collector’s job was to assess how much cargo was being hauled, what sort of cargo was being hauled, where the barge was headed to and how many passengers were on board. They’d then collect the toll from the captain and send them through the lock. It was an important piece of the canal, and it’s remarkable that such a significant part of it still exists.” Ottawa’s tollhouse is a remarkable relic of the I&M Canal boom, a surviving original structure filled with recovered items and fascinating displays about the waterway’s storied history, all in a compact one-room
footprint. Located conveniently in the heart of Ottawa’s downtown, right along the I&M towpath, you’ll find this immaculate looking 175 year old one-room museum. A group of dedicated volunteers, led by Bandstra, turned this husk of a building into a painstakingly researched approximation of what the canal collector’s toll house would have looked like back in 1848. “The building was used as a barbershop for years and years, but when I moved to town in 2006, it was vacant. So we decided to do something about that. We became a non-for-profit in 2009, community members began donating things like that cast iron stove, rope

In addition to the four collector’s offices, there were 15 locks along the canal route. These were necessary since Lake Michigan is approximately 140 feet higher than then Illinois River, meaning that boats would need to be raised or lowered about 10 feet at

Utica, you can see the remains of several locks. If you take a tour on Lock 16’s mule pulled canal boat ride, you’ll see the final lock that confluences with the Illinois River. While this is the original tollhouse structure, it is not quite on the original spot. The building was too close to Ottawa’s Columbus street, so it was moved slightly to the west during a road remodeling. The picket-fence white building is still located just a short walk from Ottawa’s boutique downtown. The office was likely built by Albert F. Dow in 1849, the first toll collector in Ottawa. Records show that he was eventually promoted to head collector at the Chicago tollhouse in 1871. There had to be someone in the tollhouse 24/7, since the nearby Columbus Street bridge needed to be moved by hand. The collector also had the added responsibilities of managing disputes between boat captains, investigating hidden cargo, cleaning up boats that sunk

in the lock, and hiring contractors to fix leaks that would periodically shut down the canal system, for up to two weeks at a time. This 16’x24’ museum is filled with interesting artifacts that give color to the daily lives of these collectors. On a shelf you’ll find a bugle and a conch shell, both were used by boat captains to wake up the sleeping collector, who’s rope bed was located in the southwest corner of the building. In 2009, a full sized replica canal boat, previously featured in the film “Prairie Tides”, was moved to the site. The barge is lined with boxes and crates symbolizing the 150+ tons of cargo these boats hauled along the canal. “The canal really jump-started Chicago’s economy, now it could rival major port cities out east. The same year the canal opened, so did the Chicago Board of Trade. If you can imagine, there used to be piles of lumber from Michigan and Wisconsin waiting outside that building, in
the middle of downtown Chicago. Those commodities would be sold, then shipped down the canal to places like Maze Lumber in Peru. That wood was used to build a lot of the older buildings and barns in the area,” Bandstra said. Today, the canal is serving as a new sort of economic engine. In 2021, more than 400 million gallons of water will fill the basin of a large section of the canal through downtown Ottawa, allowing for recreational kayaking and canoeing during the summer, and ice skating and snowmobiling during the winter. This is part of a 20-year long initiative to reinvigorate this amazing piece of Canal Town history. for the park had been brewing for more than a decade. “I started talking with a handful of people back in 2006, even before I moved to Lemont, saying, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to have a ropes course out here in the quarries.’ So, for me, the connection to this place goes all the way back to the mid-2000s, but Chris [Gladwin] and I really began conceptualizing and planning what The Forge would become in late 2015,” Bacon said. It may come as a surprise that this purpose-driven, outdoor adventure park is the combined dream of Bacon and Gladwin, two veterans

of the Chicago information technology and software development scene, and Bart Loethen, a Chicagobased attorney, but all three co-founders share a deep love for outdoor recreation. “Jeremie used to be a sponsored triathlete, and I had been doing a lot of adventure races and orienteering,” Gladwin said. “We both got into ultramarathons at the same time and did some races together. That’s really when we started developing the idea for what would become The Forge.” From Day 1, the co-founders were committed to creating a community-focused, authentic outdoor experience catering to all ages and abilities. Many trails and access points in the park are ADA accessible, ensuring guests with mobility challenges have access to freely explore the park. The Forge also features an ADA-accessible kayak and canoe ramp, and an entire series of aerial challenge courses and zip line components that enable participants with mobility challenges the opportunity to participate in the Forge’s thrilling activities at height. A harness-and-belay guidewire system, one of only three of its kind in the U.S., enables guests with mobility challenges the opportunity to experience part of the park’s signature piece, the Eight Towers Adventure, and the thrill of a 1,000-foot zip line ride over a scenic 12-acre lake. The minds behind The Forge also know that now, more than ever, parents are looking for fun and family-friendly outdoor activities. With this in mind, they developed the Two Towers Kids Zone, a scaled down version of the Eight Towers Adventure, featuring a netted challenge course with large climbing nets, zip lines and balance beams. Other kid-approved activities at the Forge include Augmented Reality Adventure Games and Tactical Outdoor Laser Tag. “When we first sat down and started designing the park, we said we wanted this to be a place where anyone from age 3 to 93 could feel comfortable and part of a community,” Bacon said. At The Forge, guests only pay for special events and programs (concerts, seasonal events, group classes) and activities requiring waivers. This means that, unlike many other parks, parents or guardians don’t need a pass just to watch the kids or to soak in the scenery. “We did a lot of market studies when we were first looking at building the park, and one of the things

we found is that people have a near universal desire to get outside and do stuff,” Gladwin said. “I remember when I was in high school and I used to jog around my neighborhood, people would stare at me like, what is that? Are you running? Things have really changed since then. There’s a general understanding of fitness and a desire to participate in outdoor recreation, and that’s only been increasing in recent years.” “The aerial adventure courses, the mountain biking trails, the pump tracks, the paddle sports, even the digital activities, they were designed to cater to everyone from your everyday adventurers, the people that just live for outdoor activities, to novices that are looking to take their first steps into this world,” Bacon said. “We built the park around three pillars: exhilarate, educate and entertain. We see our outdoor education

programming as connecting the dots between the entertainment, like the concerts and film screenings we have planned for the future, and all the great adventure activities.” Whether you’re looking to just grab a healthful snack at The Foundry, the Forge’s on-site open concept dining area, and enjoy the park’s scenic conservation efforts or if you’re ready to face the monumental 10-acre Eight Towers Adventure Course head on, there’s a new adventure awaiting everyone in the quarries of Lemont. The Forge: Lemont Quarries is at 1001 Main St. in Lemont. For information on park hours, day passes, single activity passes and memberships, go to www. forgeparks.com.

Kishauwau's Starved Rock Area Cabins, Tonica
P
erched above the Vermilion River, just 7 miles from the gates of Starved Rock State Park, Kishauwau’s Starved Rock Area Cabins bring guests closer to nature, while providing all the amenities of home. Join us as we tour a selection of the 17 familyfriendly luxury vacation units available at Kishauwau’s Starved Rock Area Cabins. Kishauwau was established in 1986 when Jamie King’s family purchased a former Tonica area Boy Scout camp, with the dream of turning the property into a cabin resort. With years of hard work and a passion for the region, they renovated the site’s four existing cabins and added 13 more units.

Kishauwau’s 17 cabins are spaced out far enough to give guests privacy and a sense of wilderness seclusion, while still only being a short drive from some premiere attractions of nearby canal towns like Utica, Ottawa and LaSalle.
Whether you’re looking for a place to stay warm while trying to spot bald eagles in the winter, or a cozy lodging destination that will keep you cool after a hot day of river rafting on the nearby Vermillion during the summer, Kishauwau’s cabins can accommodate. All 17 cabins are four-season units, capable of keeping guests comfortable all year round. Furnace heating, as well as indoor wood stoves and gas fireplaces, ensure the perfect temperature in even the chilliest of Illinois months. A central air system keeps the cabins cool during the heat of ummer, as well. There are even four dog-friendly units, so you won’t have to board Fido during your vacation. Despite its growth in the last 30 years,

Kishauwau’s Starved Rock Area Cabins remains a real mom and pop operation. “We’re here full time for the guests if they need anything. It’s a family owned and operated company. Kishauwau has been in my husband’s family since day one,” Terisa King, co-operator of Kishauwau with husband Jamie King, said. “There’s a personal touch to everything we do. We love sharing with guests why this place is so special.” That close-knit family atmosphere is infectious when staying in Kishauwau’s cabins. “Cabins are a great way for couples and families to reconnect; it really cuts down on the screen time. Parents love that their kids get to be unplugged for a week. They talk about how they sat around and played board games for the first time in years. Every single one of them leave saying it’s the best vacation they’ve ever had, which is so humbling,” Terisa said. Kishauwau’s Starved Rock Area Cabins pride
themselves on being able to cater to any size family, and that includes families with fourlegged members. Another amenity that sets Kishauwau’s luxury units apart from other lodging options is the inclusion of full-sized kitchens. All of Kishauwau’s cabins include refrigerators, stoves, and pantries stocked with the necessary pots, pans, plates and utensils needed to prepare and enjoy meals on site. This comes in addition to the barbecue and fire pits, giving plenty of options for enjoying a meal without having to dine out. “We see a lot of younger couples booking the two-person cabins these days. They’re doing a lot of hiking at Starved Rock and Matthiessen. After miles and miles of exploring the trails, it’s great to be able to come back to your cabin and just relax,” Terisa said. or more than 80 years the Starved Rock Lodge has been the consummate hotel nestled in nature. While less than two hours away from Chicago, and only a mile south of the Utica entrance to the I&M Canal towpath, the lodge’s cliffside panorama of the Illinois River and stunning view of the famed Starved Rock, make it feel worlds away .
“This is what you think of when you hear the word lodge,” said Walt Wirth, a Joliet native and frequent guest at Starved Rock Lodge. “It’s really unlike anything else in Illinois.” You’ll find the lodge along the winding road that runs through the heart of Starved Rock State Park, a towering wooden structure that peeks out above the tree canopy. After parking your car in the lodge’s reserved guest lot, while walking towards the main building’s welcoming wooden double doors, you’ll notice the vast amount of public art surrounding the property. Considered to be the largest collection of chainsaw carvings in Illinois, this set began in 1988 when then lodge CEO Terry Cross commissioned a few woodcarvings from fallen trees. "Over the years he accrued this impressive collection of outdoor art. His philosophy was 'Get lost in nature, and you will find yourself'. These pieces were meant to exemplify that," said Starved Rock Lodge Marketing Director Kathy Casstevens.
Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau
This larger than life assembly of art has since grown to more than 40 pieces in a variety of mediums. The chainsaw carvings still remain a nostalgic favorite among park guests. The art collection spills into the lobby, where you'll find a five-panel mural of the Illinois River hanging on the knotty pine wall. Across from that, Starved Rock Café offers a wide variety of fudge, souvenirs, and snacks. The snack bar is a must visit for hotel guests and hikers alike. You continue past the rustic lobby furnishings and the souvenir penny smasher, you'll find the check-in desk. There, the desk clerks will be able to assist you in making a reservation or checking in. Built during the heart of The Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps, just a generation after the construction of the I&M Canal, the lodge blends its rustic décor with the amenities guests have come to expect from a modern lodging facility. experience, consider booking one of the 41 lodge-wing rooms. These cozy rooms were part of the original 1930’s construction, they feature original knotty pine paneling and are the closest you’ll get to recreating a vintage stay at Starved Rock.

The lodge’s 28 room hotel-wing, built in 1988, provides the same charming décor and conveniently close access to the lodge’s indoor pool.

Featuring walls lined with canoes, taxidermy and vintage beer ephemera, you’d be hard pressed to find a lodge watering hole with more atmosphere.
The lodge appeals to guests of all ages. Take for instance the expansive indoor pool, that also houses a generously-sized hot tub, gated off for adults.
“They’ve got a good beer selection, and not many bars have a view like that,” said Bill Rybak from Glenview, gesturing towards the large picture windows in the rear of The Back Door Lounge.
“We’re appealing to multigenerational tourists, we have a lot of grandparents with their grandchildren staying with us. It’s a growing demographic and the lodge is a perfect destination for them,” Casstevens said.
Outside the restaurant and bar, you’ll find The Veranda, a sprawling and socially distant outdoor dining option that provides an unmatched cliffside view of Starved Rock and the Illinois River.
In addition to the pool and hot tub, the lodge also offers a generously sized sauna and massage packages.
Connie Stone, from Orland Park, makes a point to stop by The Veranda every time she and her friends visit the area.
But the lodge isn’t just a home base for vacationing families, hikers and sightseers, it’s also a renowned dining destination.
“We don’t do much hiking these days, we’ll just come up here and enjoy the view for a few hours before heading to Utica or Ottawa to do some shopping,” Connie said.
Starved Rock’s main dining hall is widely considered to be one of the best fine restaurant options along the western stretch of the I&M Canal. Locals recommend the Saturday night prime rib special and the decadent Sunday brunch.

If you’re looking to grab a locallybrewed Tangled Roots beer or sample a glass of LaSalle-grown August Hill Wine, the lodge’s Backdoor Lounge can’t be missed.

raveling along the canal, soaking in all manner of historic sights, boutique shops and scenic nature areas, can leave one looking for a unique dining experience that doesn’t divert your daytrip. Tangled Roots Brewing Company, the organization behind Ottawa’s immaculate Lone Buffalo Restaurant and craft beer taproom, welcomes you to a brand new restaurant and on-site micro-brewery in Lockport, located just a few paces off the banks of the I&M Canal. Deriving its name from the city’s famed “Lock One”, the official start of the I&M, as well as the mighty creatures that once pulled longboats along the narrow waterway, Lock & Mule by Tangled Roots Brewing Co. is dedicated to preserving the history of this storied canal town while offering a bold new take on wood fired dining. “People are looking for ways to connect with their past, and dining is a great way to do that,” said Scott Struchen, Founder and

the restaurant gives you a spectator sportlike view of modern brewing practices.
Chief Commercial Officer at Tangled Roots. “You’re sitting down, unplugging and really taking in your environment. We’re presenting something new to the community, and canal travelers, that still serves as a monument to its history.”
A beautifully minimalist 37-foot copper bar runs the length of the main dining area, sitting underneath a curved wood ceiling and exposed trusses that date back to the early 20’s, in addition to a newly added skylight that bathes the entire restaurant in warm natural light. Towards the back of the main dining area you’ll find an amply sized private room that’s ideal for hosting corporate events, wedding showers or birthday celebrations, as well as one of the other showpieces of Lock & Mule: a second bartop that parallels an enormous wood fire grill.
This commitment to honoring the past extends to the historic building that houses the new restaurant and brewery. Lock and Mule is located inside the former Mackin Motor Co. Ford dealership, a wide brick structure that dates all the way back to 1922. You’ll spot hints at this automotive past scattered throughout the building, like a pair of large retractable picture windows where the dealership’s garage doors once were, and a beautiful open concept dining area that originally served as the Mackin auto showroom. “Early on, we made the connection that the restaurant was not only going to be located inside the old Mackin dealership, but also just a few dozen feet away from a historic rail line and the I&M Canal,” said Struchen. “Lockport is really the heart of all this historic transportation, so we knew the name and atmosphere had to be a nod to that legacy.”
Aesthetically, the restaurant is a wonderful fusion of past and present, crafting a cozy and inviting atmosphere that still feels modern and open-concept. Near the entryway, you’ll spy a large floor tile mosaic of a hop that harkens back to the opulent department stores that once lined Lockport’s State Street, while a glass encased brewing area on the other side of

The core of Lock & Mule’s menu is centered around this impressive hickory burning grill, behind which a team of talented chefs release all the succulent flavors of locally sourced meats and vegetables. Lock & Mule will be employing fresh produce from establishments like Second City Greens, a container farm start-up based out of nearby Hinsdale, ensuring all the menu’s staples will be featuring fresh micro-local greens, herbs and more. “The wood fire grill, that’s on full display

for our guests, adds this really primal quality to Lock & Mule. We wanted that authenticity and respect for the past to extend to the menu, and wood fire was the perfect way to accomplish that,” said Struchen. “It’s something new for the area, it’s visceral to watch, and the dishes have that unmistakable charred flavor.” On the Lock & Mule menu you’ll find staples like steaks and chops, sourced from local farms, as well as more casual pub fare like burgers (including a delectable falafel burger that’s sure to become a favorite among returning guests). Tangled Root’s R&D Chef Carson Barger was experimenting with a slew of new dishes for this bold concept menu on the day we visited the kitchen, including a bacon-wrapped stuffed jalapeno elote and a thai-inspired sweet chili calamari. Tangled Roots pride themselves on crafting a portfolio of beers to suit any palette – from light sessionable lagers to dark and complex experimental brews. You’ll find up to 15 beers on tap at Lock & Mule any given time, including seasonal and
limited edition beers. Exciting new beer developments are in the works as well, Tangled Roots brewers are working with artisans in Lockport’s sister-city, Asiago, Italy, to develop an intercontinental inspired craft brew, implementing ingredients grown in the Vicenza province. Looking to take some of your favorite Tangled Roots brews home with you? A retail area towards the front of the restaurant will allow you to browse a selection of cold canned favorites like The Devil’s Paintbox IPA and Fourty1Eight8, a ‘farm-to-foam’ beer made with hops and barley grown right down the road from their flagship Ottawa, IL brewery. Much like the I&M Canal corridor itself, Lock & Mule feels and tastes like a harmonic fusion of Illinois’ past and present. Sitting down for a wood fired burger and cold craft beer, implementing ingredients grown in this very region, makes for a contemplative and memorable experience that will leave you wanting to enjoy many more meals along the banks of the historic I&M Canal.

DESTINATION ANTIQUE STORE TRUE NORTH
t o g t jus
Morris store is home to over 10,000 sq. feet of vintage and recycled items
ocated just a short drive from the banks of the I&M Canal in Morris, you’ll find True North. This vintage, antiques and oddities superstore knows “Shopping can, and should, be an adventure.” Now, this popular canal town destination has embarked on an adventure of their own, a huge expansion and remodel that will bring you an even wider selection of exciting and eclectic items. Conveniently located on U.S. 6 in Morris, just a short drive away from Interstate 80 and Route 47, True North has blossomed in popularity and notoriety since it first opened its doors in 2014. After quickly outgrowing its original storefront
in historic downtown Morris, True North moved to the 6,000 square foot “warehouse” building it now calls home. With a growing cavalcade of fans, seven consecutive “Best Antique Shop In Grundy County” awards and write-ups from some of the most prestigious vintage and antiquing magazines out there, True North has completed another massive expansion, their biggest to date. Sure to please fans old and new alike, this addition will add 4,000 more square feet to the warehouse, giving some of True North’s 100-plus vendors the opportunity to create truly unique micro-shops throughout the store.

“The whole idea at True North is that the entire family can come here, relax, see something cool ... just have a unique experience and still feel no pressure to buy anything. There’s really something for everybody to do, for all ages,” said Stacey Olson, the owner and visionary behind True North. The crowning jewel of this massive new expansion are the 30 booths in the back of the store, all of which feature generous window space for easy browsing. These windowed vendor rooms create a more open concept

a place where you can go and visit all these exciting types of vintage and artisan stores under one roof!” Many of True North’s “Midwest Makers,” regional creators from Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Missouri that sell an assortment of popular handmade goods, now have dedicated spaces in the expansion with elaborate window spaces to display their goods. You’ll find some of True North’s popular vintage vendors in these booths, showing off curated selections of some of their best items.
feeling than your traditional antique store vendor rooms, while still allowing each space to have it’s own unique theme and styling. “With this expansion, we’re hoping to bring window shopping to a whole new audience,” said Olson. “Since the experience of going to a mall isn’t what it once was, and people are incredibly passionate about vintage, True North is now
large and sober pieces many think of when they first hear to word “antiques.” These inexpensive, highly-collectable, conversation pieces are rapidly becoming the hottest things in the world of vintage, and they just so happen to be True North’s forte. “We don’t have huge 12 x 12 booths filled with tables, we have small booths filled with tons of exciting smalls. Our customers love that, on any given day we’re selling hundreds of items,” said Olson. “It comes a surprise to a lot of people, but the average cost of an item at True North is just $5.”
“We can’t wait to see what our vendors do with the window spaces come Christmastime,” said Olson. “Our Midwest Makers used to be located in the front of the store, that space is now dedicated to 70-plus vintage vendors. All together, we now have more than 100 vendors throughout True North.”
True North also plays host to many exciting events throughout the year, from seasonal shopping parties to the upscale Scout Flea Market they host in their parking lot. During these special occasions, the store can get even busier than usual, and the expansion is helping to make your checkout process during these days even simpler.
True North specializes in what are called smalls, a term you may have picked up if you’re fan of History Channel’s American Pickers. This sub-category of vintage pieces favor the eclectic and compact over the
In addition to the vintage conveyor belt checkout lanes in the front of the store, another quirky amenity you won’t find anywhere else, True North has now added a third register in the back of the shop to

simplify the checkout process on these busy event days and busy weekends. If you’re a fan of vintage clothing, you should start planning your trip ASAP. True North has always been known for their old school apparel, but they now feature a staggering 1,000-plus square feet of recycled clothing. The selection of clothes has also grown to include vintage children’s clothing, so the style and philosophy of upcycling can now extend to your children’s wardrobe. “Not only do we have cool jean jackets, patches and pins, flannels and recycled T-shirts, we also have recycled kids clothes. We know that parents don’t want to spend a ton of clothes for quickly growing kids, so why not wear something that’s gently worn in like-new condition,” said Olson. True North knows big shopping trips with kids can be challenging, especially when you’re planning on spending an hour or two in a sprawling shop like theirs. To keep the little ones entertained, True North has added a “Little Movie Theater” complete with vintage seats. This mini-cinema always has ageappropriate films playing for kids, giving you
some much needed time to explore the store. Did we mention that True North also houses an arcade? They’ve doubled the size of their existing arcade area, adding classic games like Centipede, Galaga and Asteroids, sure to appeal to kids and kids at heart. “Our average customer used to be in here for an hour. We’re now seeing that the average time spent in True North is about an hour and half or two hours. It’s the type of place where people can just sit down and have some fun,” said Olson. The new addition also includes a fotomatinspired stand, where guests walk through and browse a selection of vintage cameras, pictures and other photography related memorabilia. Stacey Olson sees these themed attractions as a natural continuation of the selfie stations they added to True North in 2019. “We’re adding even more selfie opportunities throughout the store. There’s a state park themed area, a vintage record shop, an old barn with a tin roof and even a 50’s jewelry shop. It’s all very photo-friendly,” said Olson.
While this massive expansion is ushering in all sorts of new amenities, the core of True North remains the same. Everything in the store promotes the culture of recycling and upcycling forgotten treasures, the pillars that have made the store and it’s amazing selection of vintage merchandise so popular in the first place. “We still have more than 60 booths of vintage and antiques, the stuff that True North is really known for, and the stuff that they love. We’ve just expanded and increased everything,” said Olson. If you’ve been to True North before, the store will feel at once familiar and brand new. So whether you’re a card carrying member of their fan club, or just a novice vintage shopper scouting for your next weekend destination, look no further than one of the most exciting stores in the Heritage Corridor and along the I&M Canal: True North.
