THE AUTHENTIC ROUTE 66 EXPERIENCE F

rom the groundbreaking of the Illinois & Michigan Canal - the mighty 19th century waterway that bridged the heartland of Illinois and Chicago - to major modern Interstates like I-80 and I-55, transportation has always played a key role in the development, history and culture of Joliet. However, no body of water or eight lane freeway has left quite as lasting an impact on the city, and global popular culture, as America’s Mother Road: Route 66. Within The First Hundred Miles, the City of Joliet is less than an hour away from downtown Chicago. Joliet is widely regarded by 66 scholars, and avid road trippers alike, as one of the top spots to pull over and experience a bit of the historic route firsthand. During its 50+ years of active use, the Mother Road saw several notable reroutings. However, the original 1926 alignment, which passed through the heart of downtown Joliet, is still considered the definitive path for travelers looking to recreate the authentic Route 66 experience.

Every year, countless domestic and international tourists flock to Joliet to see where 66 intersects with one of America’s other early intercontinental roadways, the iconic Lincoln Highway. From 1926 to 1940, these highways crossed right in the center of Joliet’s historic downtown, which is now honored with a historical marker at the intersection of Cass and Chicago Streets. Together, these legendary routes welcomed generation upon generation of travelers to Joliet, transforming a riverfront community built on manufacturing into the must-visit stopover destination that remains to this day. Steeped in Route 66-era nostalgia and exciting modern amenities, Joliet is as exciting of a destination today as it was nearly a century ago. Packing big city amenities into a nostalgic small-town setting, you’ll discover a beautiful selection of jaw-dropping turn of the century architecture, delicious eateries, on-trend boutiques and fascinating museums, packed with the city’s rich history, all within a short walk of Route 66. In this section, we will be highlighting both

ant a taste of real Americana on your Route 66 road trip? These five fan-favorite fried chicken restaurants are must-stop spots of foodies looking for a hot home-style meal. As you travel along the Mother Road, you’ll encounter some of the Midwest’s most iconic eateries specializing in fried chicken, some of which have been serving up this delicious goldenbattered goodness for more than a half century. Be sure to start your journey hungry, you’ll want to sample the food at each one of these time-tested locations.

WHITE FENCE FARM

 WHITE FENCE FARM 1376 Joliet Road, Romeoville, IL

Just look for the water tower with the giant WFF and you’ll know that you’re at White Fence Farm in Romeoville, one of the early iconic dining establishments along Route 66. Celebrating over 65 years in business, this actual farm has been serving up, as they say, ‘The World’s Greatest Chicken’ to several generations of hungry travelers. Known for their famous twice-cooked process, which involves baking and frying chicken to produce a distinctly thin yet crispy crust. White Fence Farm draws in fried chicken fans from around the nation. In keeping with the authentic farm theme, every meal includes a variety of sides that have become as famous as their chicken: cole slaw, cottage cheese, bean salad, pickled beets and mashed, baked or French fried potatoes.

DEL REHA'S CHICKEN BASKET

Built by multimillionaire coal executive Stuyvesant Peabody in the 1920s so he could entertain his Chicago friends in a country setting, the building has grown to 11 dining rooms and can seat over 1,200 hungry chicken eaters at a time. Kids of all ages will be entertained by White Fence’s on-site petting zoo, as well as the restaurants’ Car and Antique Museum. Be sure to commemorate your fried chicken road trip by snapping a picture with the larger-than-life Chicken Mascot, located by the main doors. Fans of fried chicken have been loyally returning to Willowbrook’s classic Del Rhea’s Chicken Basket since its doors were first opened to Route 66 travelers in the early 1940s. This icon of American roadside dining, which holds a spot on the Route 66 “Hall of Fame”, has been serving up chicken, cocktails, and other farmhouse recipes in a traditional supper club atmosphere for more than 60 years. Originally founded as a service station and restaurant combination, Del Rhea’s popularity grew right alongside the Mother Road. Today, you can still savor the original taste of their renowned fried and roasted chicken, made just like it was during the heyday of Route 66. On the menu you’ll find other homestyle classics like corn fritters, baby back ribs, homemade mashed potatoes and an allyou-can-eat salad bar. Don’t miss this authentic throw-back

restaurant, decorated with a charming country inspired interior, conveniently located only 25 minutes from the heart of downtown Chicago. Find out why they say to ‘Get Your Chicks on Route 66’!  MERICHKA’S 604 Theodore St, Crest Hill, IL

Crest Hill’s Merichka’s has been serving their legendary take on the classic po’boy sandwich since 1933, using fresh fried chicken in lieu of roast beef or seafood. This family owned and operated eatery takes great pride in using Choice USDA and quality hand cut meats. From their legendary chicken to the freshly hand ground hamburger, Merichka’s is incredibly authentic. The interior of this classic supper club boasts dark rich paneling, complete with red checkered tablecloths and a generous-sized bar, where you can order a libation or two before your meal. Menu items include great steaks and chops, as well as an extensive seafood selection. Their fan favorite Garlic

Butterine can be added to just about everything on the menu, enhancing the flavor of nearly any classic dish. Stop in and try some exciting fried chicken at this icon of Old Route 66.  CHICKEN-N-SPICE 150 W Brook Forest Ave, Shorewood, IL

Looking for fried chicken made with fresh, handcrafted and all-natural ingredients? Stop by Shorewood’s Chicken N Spice, which is famous for hand cutting and seasoning their chicken daily, to ensure you have the freshest possible dish. The delectable chicken here is served up several ways: on-the-bone, in breast chunks or George n Eddie style (that includes all-white-meat chicken chunks). You’ll also get tater wedges (aka Jo-Joe's), dirty rice and a biscuit to accompany the meal, with your choice of dipping sauces. Looking for something even more classic, you’ll even find the elusive livers and gizzards, a farm fresh favorite from yesteryear. Eat in at this casual location or take it to go and enjoy your meal at one of the nearby parks. Either way, you’ll enjoy their friendly staff and fresh offerings that have made this a local favorite.

 BERNARDI’S II 123 N Mill St, Pontiac, IL

The Bernardi family has been serving up classic ItalianAmerican fare since 1933. A second location for the popular Toluca, IL based restaurant, Bernardi’s II in Pontiac boasts a vast menu of classic dishes, from traditional pastas to prime cut cod and their regionally famous Mona’s brand of northern Italian Tortellini. For those in the know, it’s the fried chicken that’s the star of this third generation dining destination. People continue to travel from all over the region to dig into the Bernardi’s cuts of golden brown fried chicken. Like all the dinners here, the chicken comes with a dinner salad, choice of potato, vegetable or rice, bread, and butter. To make your dish extra authentic, upgrade to ‘family style’, which includes salad, choice of potato, wild rice or vegetable, side of tortellini and spaghetti, bread and butter, and coffee or freshly brewed iced tea. Now that’s a meal! No matter where you’re traveling from, the friendly staff at Bernardi’s will make you feel like a local.

EXPLORE MORE in Livingston County N

estled in the prairies of North Central Illinois, near the end of your First Hundred Miles trek along Route 66, you’ll find Livingston County. Steeped in rich history and civic pride, featuring ample entertainment opportunities and wonderful dining options, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by all the hidden gems and beautiful sights that can be found along the Mother Road in Livingston County! Here’s a look at some of must-see attractions you’ll encounter:

in 1898, 1926 and 1978, these cablesupported wooden walkways stretch nearly 200 feet across the flowing Vermillion River. These beautiful relics of Livingston County’s past make for an excellent photo-op and a convenient way to view this beautiful stretch of nature.

 PONTIAC COURTHOUSE Recently undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation, this historic courthouse was built on the site where future President Abraham Lincoln, and his legendary political opponent Stephen Douglas, both practiced law. Though this building wasn’t completed until a decade after President Lincoln’s passing, it’s still a stunning example of Second Empirestyle architecture, erected on some truly historic grounds. Open daily except for Saturdays.  PONTIAC SWINGING BRIDGES Pontiac is home to three beautiful swinging pedestrian bridges, one of which even predates Route 66! Built

 FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF DWIGHT One of only three remaining banks designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, this gorgeous prairie style building in downtown Dwight once housed the real estate office and bank of Frank L. Smith. Constructed in 1905, and later remodeled in the 1960s using Wright’s original plans, this unexpected landmark is a must-visit for any architecture aficionados driving on the Mother Road.

 FAIRBURY AMERICAN LEGION SPEEDWAY Racing enthusiasts won’t want to miss a trip to the Fairbury American Legion Speedway, an award-winning 1/4 mile semi-banked dirt track that hosts a number of high profile stock car events every season. This renowned track, which has been entertaining fans and racers alike since 1946, attracts 1000’s of visitors from near and far because thanks to it’s comfortable atmosphere and convenient location.

 KILGUS FARMSTEAD COUNTRY STORE Located just a short detour to the East of Route 66, you’ll find Fairbury’s own Kilgus Farmstead Country Store. This authentic farm store features a wide range of local milk products and farm-raised meats. If you visit early on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, you can see the milk bottling process in action at their on-farm creamery, or you can schedule a full farm

Historic Lincoln Sites Along Route 66

Discover Lincoln’s Legacy In Pontiac Long before the Mother Road The First Hundred Miles Of Route 66 has quite a history, from the development of the Mother Road to carrying some of our most prestigious figures well before the road was named, none more famous than Illinois own President Abraham Lincoln. Discover the future president’s early days as a young Illinois Circuit Court lawyer in beautiful Pontiac, Illinois.

 YOUNG LINCOLN STATUE

 COUNTY SEAT ALMOST MOVED

Washington and Mill Streets South of Courthouse

South Side Courthouse Square

This Lincoln statue depicts the young attorney during his employment as a county circuit court litigator at the young age of 31. Resting against a split-rail fence is reminiscent of the labor he endured as a young man growing up on the Illinois prairie.  FELL PARK 200 Block North Vermillion Street

Jessie Fell, friend of Lincoln and a true pioneer, was instrumental in the development of the city and county, even the naming of Pontiac after the distinguished Indian Chief. Donating the land for the city park and even having a hand in the naming of some streets, Jessie Fell was truly a visionary for his time.

74

HCCVB-Route66-V2.indd 74

Not producing a courthouse as promised back in 1839 resulted in a vote to move the county seat to another location ‘upriver’ as the city of Pontiac was an ‘unhealthy locality, being low and swampy’ as descenders argued. The Lincoln and Pontiac connection would have never been if it were not for Lincoln’s friend, Jessie Fell who led the charge to produce the much needed and promised structure. Although the vote to move was 81 to 56, it failed to meet the two-thirds majority needed and the rest is history!  LIVINGSTON COUNTY COURTHOUSE Washington and Mill Streets South of Courthouse

attorneys but never in this building. Erected 10 years after Lincoln's death, it remains the site of where he walked as a working man in his 30s. Little did both men know that they would meet again as adversaries in 1860s Lincoln-Douglas Debates. Open daily except for Saturdays.  LINCOLN SLEPT HERE West Side Mill Street at Mill Street Bridge

To commemorate where Lincoln slept, Pontiac has made sure to provide visitors with a landmark and wayside exhibit marking the historical spot. Walking distance from the county courthouse, these cabins hid amongst the ‘clumps of bushes that were rendered almost invisible’ but provided a convenient location for Lincoln and his activities back in May of 1840.  LINCOLN WINS COUNTY’S 1ST LAWSUIT 200 Block North Chicago St

This ‘Looking For Lincoln’ Wayside Exhibit marks the spot where ‘the first jury trial

in all of Livingston county’ we find Lincoln facing off with his future adversary Douglas in a defamation of character case. Held in a log cabin, Lincoln prevails for his client accused of stealing meat; however the $2,000 award is greatly reduced.  LINCOLN STRANDED HERE COUNTY MARKET GROCERY 200 North Oak St

 RIVERBANK DEBATE SITE

One of the worst snowstorms in the history of the area was recorded in February 1855, stopping all activities including a train bound for Springfield and housing none other than Abraham Lincoln. With roads blockaded, a rescue party was formed to recover the freezing passengers. Lincoln was among the group that was housed at John McGregor’s who refused Lincoln's offer of payment for his

keep. It is said upon his departure, Lincoln gave McGregor’s two daughters a gold coin each of ‘which they did not refuse.’ Wayside Exhibit and Historical Marker.

While trying the first ever jury trial in Livingston County in May of 1840, Lincoln and Douglas carried their differences out into the street with an impromptu debate at this site. A precursor of the senate debates which would come to fruition some eighteen years later, both stood riverside in this same spot atop a dry goods box for all to see.
