THE I&M CANAL

N

o trip to Starved Rock Country is complete without spending some time along The I&M Canal. When you travel along the I&M Canal, you’re retracing the footsteps of people who transformed the Illinois’ prairie into the expansive and diverse region it is today, filled with exciting industries, delicious dining and plenty of boutique shopping opportunities. Walk in the footsteps of the laborers and lock tenders from nearly two centuries ago at these popular canal attractions.

JUNIOR RANGER PROGRAM

OTTAWA’S TOLLHOUSE

Become a Junior Ranger (ages 5 to 95). The Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Area has one of the favorite National Park Service programs – the Junior Ranger program. It is easy to earn your badge by completing the activities in the book. You can always stop at the I&M Canal Visitor Center (754 First Street, LaSalle, 61301) or Isle a la Cache Museum (501 E. Romeo Rd., Romeoville, IL 60446) to pick up your Jr. Ranger book and/or to return your book for your Jr. Ranger badge. In addition, during the 175th anniversary year of the Canal, there are several dates and locations, when you can both meet and National Park Service Ranger and become a Junior Ranger. Check iandmcanal.org for details.

Ottawa’s tollhouse is a remarkable relic of the I&M Canal boom, a surviving original structure filled with recovered items and fascinating displays about the waterway’s storied history in a compact one-room footprint. Located conveniently in the heart of Ottawa’s downtown, right along the I&M towpath, you’ll find this immaculate-looking 175 year old museum. A group of dedicated volunteers turned this husk of a building into a painstakingly researched approximation of what the canal collector’s toll house would have looked like in 1848. For more information, visit pickusottawail.com/ attractions/im-canal-tollhouse.

28 HCDestinations.com

I&M CANAL BOAT This 76-foot boat is the first on the canal in over 70 years, but the star of the show for adults and kids alike is Moe the Mule, who pulls the boat and passengers down the canal for a brief glimpse of what canal travel was like in 1848, when Chicago was the western frontier. The ride is about an hour long, enough to learn the history from the guide, but not too long for the kids. You are allowed to walk around the boat, sit in the cabin, or explore the upper deck. Catch a view of turtles sunning themselves on the rocks, while birds, fish, and other animals may make an appearance. Kids can become a Jr. Captain and visit the stern of the boat to see the rudder in action. Tickets are required via iandmcanal.org or 754 First St., LaSalle, 61301.

Bike The Canal Trail

The I&M Canal National Heritage Area’s bike rental program removes the biggest challenge to taking a scenic ride along the legendary waterway – transporting your own bikes to the trailhead. Thanks to the app-based bike sharing system, you can soak in the history and natural splendor of the canal for $5 an hour using one of several locations – including a new kiosk in Marseilles (shown below), located at Main Street and the I&M Canal Trail. Anyone age 18 or older can rent a bike at self-service locations near canal trail entrances in Lemont, Lockport, Channahon, Morris, Marseilles, Utica and La Salle using a smartphone app. Before you head out on your trip, visit iandmcanal.org for a link to download the app, or simply search Movatic in your app store. You’ll then follow a simple registration process that can be completed in a matter of moments. Once you’re in proximity to one of the bike stations, you can use your rental wheels to explore the trail and beautiful canal towns for a small hourly fee. All rental bikes include a basket, bell and headlight for evening travel. You will, however, need to provide your own helmet. Once you have completed your trip, the bicycle can be returned to any of the open stations along the canal, an added convenience. For more information on the I&M Canal Bike Share, and to get updates on when the new program will launch, visit iandmcanal.org/bike.

FOUR SEASO

S

tarved Rock State Park, nestled along the picturesque Illinois River, is a year-round haven for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Each season brings its own unique charm and opportunities for exploration. Join us as we embark on a journey through the four seasons at Starved Rock, highlighting just a few of the annual activities you can enjoy at this perennially popular park.

SPRING

SUMMER

As winter begins to thaw, Starved Rock transforms into a vibrant tapestry of color and life. Spring is a magical time in the park, marked by the emergence of thousands of Virginia bluebells, blanketing the forest floor in shades of blue. These delicate, bell-shaped flowers create a breathtaking spectacle and are a mustsee for any visitor. But the beauty doesn’t end there. Spring wildflowers, including trilliums, Dutchman’s breeches, and bloodroot, paint the landscape with their vibrant hues, offering a picturesque backdrop for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

When the summer sun shines brightly, Starved Rock becomes a hub of excitement and activity, offering a wide range of guided hikes, trolley tours, and serene water cruises. Guided hikes, led by knowledgeable naturalists, depart from the Starved Rock Lodge and take guests through the park’s diverse ecosystems, offering insights into its rich history, geology, and natural wonders along the way. Tickets also include a lunch and souvenir bag.

Whether you’re captivated by the vibrant colors of spring, the summer adventures at Starved Rock Lodge, the fall foliage or the winter wonders, this Illinois gem never fails to enchant visitors with its ever-changing splendor. Plan your visit to Starved Rock and experience the four seasons of fun that await you in this breathtaking natural wonderland.

Most of Starved Rock’s beautiful sandstone canyons produce waterfalls after periods of heavy rainfall, but St. Louis, LaSalle, French, Wildcat, Ottawa and Kaskaskia Canyons are considered to be among the best. St. Louis Canyon boasts the only spring-fed waterfall in the park, resulting in much longer falls, while LaSalle Canyon is the only one in the park you can walk behind while the waterfall is in action. The French Canyon waterfall is located a short 0.4-mile hike from the Visitor Center, while Wildcat is the tallest in the park, exceeding 70 feet in height.

ONS OF FUN FALL

WINTER

Autumn arrives at Starved Rock with a blaze of color as the leaves of oak, maple, and hickory trees transform the landscape into a vibrant tapestry of red, orange, and yellow. Fall is the perfect time to explore the park’s breathtaking scenery and delve into its haunted history. Visitors from nearby states flock to take photos of Starved Rock’s stunning foliage and walk along leaf-covered trails that crunch with every footstep.

While the landscape may be blanketed in snow and ice, Starved Rock remains a captivating destination throughout the winter months, offering unique experiences you won’t find any other season. Eagle Watch Weekend is a highlight in late January each year, allowing visitors to observe majestic eagles as they soar over the Illinois River – a popular winter nesting site, located near the Starved Rock lock and dam. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera for this unforgettable experience. Follow the Eagle Watch Weekend Facebook page for information on events, eagle-themed activities and opportunities to see rescued eagles up close and personal.

The annual Fall Colors Weekend is a mustattend event, featuring guided hikes and breathtaking vistas. For those seeking a different kind of thrill, Starved Rock offers haunted hikes that delve into the park’s eerie history - featuring appearances by ghosts of the past. Eagle Watch Weekend and Frozen Waterfalls

As the temperatures drop, the park’s waterfalls freeze into stunning ice formations, creating a winter wonderland. For experienced climbers, Starved Rock offers thrilling ice climbing opportunities, but be sure to check safety guidelines and conditions before attempting this adventurous activity. Climbers are required to checkin with the park office before attempting a climb to ensure ice conditions are suitable. While only seasoned climbers should attempt such an activity, all guests with proper footwear are encouraged to make the icy hike down to the falls to see the climbers in person.

Every winter, a small stretch of the Illinois River between Starved Rock State Park and the Illinois Waterways Visitors Center becomes a seasonal nesting point for beautiful bald eagles. These majestic creatures, with wingspans upwards of eight feet in width, pay Starved Rock a visit every year when more northern states’ rivers and lakes begin to freeze. During their wintering season, which lasts anywhere between December and March, you’ll often spot these eagles circling above broken ice, trying to find their next meal, or roosting among the island’s tallest trees - but the best time to spot them is Eagle Watch Weekend. This fest is devoted to bringing guests closer to these feathered friends with informational talks, eagle encounters, bird-watching excursions and discounted lodging bundles.
