During its days as an active prison from 1858 to 2002, the Old Joliet Prison housed such infamous inmates as Richard Speck, John Wayne Gacy, James Earl Ray and Babyface Nelson, to name a few. Now, the Joliet Area Historical Museum offers a variety of regular tours where you can snap photos, explore the building’s storied history or join a paranormal investigation.

ILLINOIS ROUTE 66 MINING MUSEUM

A tragedy in 1883 resulted in the death of 74 men and boys, an event that played a major part in the formation of the United Mine Workers Union in 1890. This small but fascinating micro-museum is open to the public Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.

3 can’t-miss attractions

home. Hop in your car and experience the unmatched nostalgia of Route 66 this spring. The First Hundred Miles is home to some great and engaging kids activities and destinations, ensuring that – no matter their age – everyone is having fun along the Mother Road. Here are three fan-favorite stops to add to your road-trip itinerary.

u Harvester Park Playground

15W400 Harvester Dr., Burr Ridge | Open to the public dawn to dusk

Located at Harvester Park in Burr Ridge – a stone’s throw from historic Old Route 66 and close to Interstate 55, County Line Road and Illinois Route 83/Kingery Highway – the themed Harvester Park Playground is an amazingly detailed play environment that is a hit with parents, caregivers and kids alike. Simulating a trip along the Mother Road, it treats park-goers to an interactive cross-country journey across several pieces of play equipment, all designed to look like some of the popular roadside stops.

Your journey starts along a tiny version of The First Hundred Miles, where kids can scale The Tower, a multi-tiered jungle gym lined with faux steel girders and radio towers, looking like an iconic Chicago structure near the start of Route 66. Traveling from the Illinois section to the Missouri portion of the park, you’ll be greeted with boulders representing the famed Meramec Caverns. As you continue along the rubber playground flooring designed to look like a two-lane blacktop, you’ll find a 60-foot-long zip line, representing the modern interstate, and a rusted Chevy tow truck with cartoon eyes inspired loosely by a Route 66 animated film character.

In the Oklahoma section of the park, you’ll find a climbing tunnel that pays tribute to the classic Blue Whale roadside attraction, while in the nearby Texas portion, you’ll see two spray-painted cars half buried in the ground – a clever homage to Amarillo’s classic public art installation called “Cadillac Ranch,” a fixture of the modern Route 66 road trip. In the Arizona area, children can take a spin on a Wigwam Motel-inspired rope structure. The route comes to an end in California, where a pier-themed area allows you to surf on the turf with a springy balance board. At the end of the route, you’ll find a giant 3-D Route 66 photo-op sign to commemorate your visit.

WORLD’S LARGEST ROUTE 66 SHIELD

100 W. Howard St., Pontiac
