How to stay fit when social distancing Many people consider their gyms much more than a place to exercise. A gym can be a great place to socialize while trying to stay healthy. Having friends or fellow fitness enthusiasts around also can provide the motivation many people need to stay the course and achieve their fitness goals. The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association says more than 70 million consumers visited health clubs in 2017. That marked a record high since IHRSA began tracking data in 1987. Fitness memberships also are popular in Canada. GoodLife, the largest fitness club in Canada, has 400 different locations and more than 1.5 million members. Fitness centers were among the many non-essential businesses forced to shutter as a result of COVID-19, forcing fitness enthusiasts to find new ways to stay mentally and physically fit. Many creative ideas have surfaced. • Online classes: An internet connection is all that’s necessary to find a number of workouts that can be streamed from the comfort of home. The streaming website YouTube can be a gold mine for free workouts. Some cable service providers also may have On Demand fitness channels or rentals that can mirror some of the classes taken at the gym. • Social apps: Gym-goers can inquire whether their gyms are offering alternative programs. For example, Jersey Strong, a fitness chain in New Jersey, began live-streaming many of its popular group fitness classes via a special Facebook page. Class instructors guide classes from their own homes or from empty gyms. Other gyms may provide links to subscriberbased gym training workouts free of charge. • The great outdoors: Even though some parks, beaches and trails have been closed, workouts can take place in and around the neighborhood. Jogging or walking can be excellent cardiovascular exercises, as can taking a bicycle ride for a few miles down neighborhood streets. People who live in rural areas can run through forested land or even farmland.

Pushups, sit-ups, planks, and other body weight exercises can be done right in the backyard. Before making a decision about whether or not to be active outside, be sure to check the latest guidance from your local health department and community or state leaders. • Remote sports: Videos of city dwellers playing tennis across roof tops for much-needed air and exercise have emerged in recent weeks. Similar benefits can be achieved with a game of catch, volleyball or racquet sports over fences with neighbors, provided limits on participants are placed and social distancing is maintained. Staying fit during COVID-19 restrictions takes some ingenuity, but it’s certainly possible to maintain your overall health. In fact, some people have found they now have more time to exercise than they did before.

Urgent Care vs Emergency Room: Know Where to Go Silver Cross Urgent Care Center Now Open on Hospital’s New Lenox Campus

It’s Sunday morning, and you slice your thumb cutting strawberries. The pain isn’t too bad, but the cut looks deep, and it’s bleeding steadily. Do you head to the hospital emergency room or visit an urgent care center? If you’ve ever wondered, “ER or urgent care center,” you’re not alone. The difference boils down to what constitutes a medical emergency. “Emergency rooms are designed to treat acute and lifethreatening conditions,” explains Mark Veldman, D.O., boardcertified family medicine physician and Medical Director of Silver Cross Hospital’s brand-new urgent care center in New Lenox. The center, which is located on the west side of the hospital campus in New Lenox, opened July 6 and serves patients 7 days a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Silver Cross also operates an urgent care center on Joliet’s west side at 1051 Essington Road from 5 to 9 p.m. weekday evenings and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “If you’re experiencing chest pain, trouble breathing, severe allergic reaction, symptoms of a stroke or other life-threatening symptoms, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room right away,” he added. An urgent care center, on the other hand, is a great option for a cut on the thumb that may need stitches. “Think of an urgent care center as a substitute for your doctor when your doctor’s office is closed,” Dr. Veldman said. Urgent care centers offer routine injury treatment and acute medical care that a primary care doctor would typically perform in the office. That includes treating cold and flu cases, earaches, sprains and strains, minor cuts that require stitches, skin conditions, swelling or pain, minor fractures and more.

“Sometimes you need medical attention right away, but it’s not an actual emergency,” he added. “So Silver Cross Urgent Care is a great option for routine injury and illness treatment.” Patients are evaluated and treated by certified mid-level providers (physician assistant or advanced practice nurses) under doctor’s supervision. The center itself features six comfortable exam rooms, on-site lab and X-ray services, a procedure room and a spacious waiting room. Walk-in care is available with no appointment needed. For added convenience, you can schedule a visit online while you wait at home or work. Silver Cross: One of the Nation's Best. Close to Home. Being named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals is something few hospitals ever achieve. So you can imagine how proud Silver Cross Hospital is to earn this distinction for the 8th time! 100 Top Hospitals like Silver Cross have better survival rates, fewer complications, shorter hospital stays and higher ratings from patients. Added to Silver Cross Hospital's 11 Straight A's for Patient Safety from the Leapfrog Group, the 100 Top recognition demonstrates that safety, quality and patient experience are at the heart of everything the New Lenox hospital does. "At Silver Cross we pride ourselves on offering an unrivaled healthcare experience for our patients," said President/CEO Ruth Colby. "To be nationally recognized for the work we do on a daily basis is extraordinary and a true credit to our incredible team of caregivers.

The COVID-19 crisis has made 2020 a challenging year for hospitals around the globe, but here at Silver Cross, we've never wavered from our commitment to deliver superior care to every patient, every time. We're humbled to be recognized as one of the nation's best hospitals for the eighth time, but we'll keep pushing to be even better." This recognition demonstrates Silver Cross Hospital's ongoing commitment to prioritize patient-centered care, particularly during this very disruptive and challenging time. According to IBM Watson Health, as compared to similar hospitals, the hospitals included on the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals list had better results on key clinical and operational performance indicators. These include survival rates, patient complications, healthcare associated infections, 30-day mortality and 30-day hospital-wide readmission

rates, length of stay, throughput in emergency rooms, inpatient expenses, profitability, and ratings from patients. "Hospitals, health systems and the dedicated clinicians and staff who work at these organizations have emerged as true heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic and we are grateful to be able to recognize these extraordinary leaders at this time," said Kyu Rhee, M.D., M.P.P., Vice President and Chief Health Officer, IBM Watson Health. “Organizations on this list demonstrate a relentless commitment to high value, patient-centered care and innovation,” she added. “It is clear that the COVID-19 crisis will be a catalyst for reinvention, and we believe these top performing hospitals are positioned to emerge stronger and smarter out of this crisis.” For more information, visit http://www.100tophospitals.com/.

Silver Cross: Our Safety Commitment to You At Silver Cross Hospital, safety is our No. 1 priority. It guides every decision we make, and it reaches every corner of our hospital. That's why we have rigorous safety measures in place to protect our patients, visitors and staff at all of our Silver Cross locations. Universal masking of all staff, patients and visitors. When you arrive at Silver Cross, you will be given a hospital-grade mask to wear. This gives an added level of protection for every person who comes into our hospital. Temperature Scanning at Entrances. All Silver Cross staff, volunteers and medical staff are required to have their temperatures taken when they report to work. In addition, all patients and visitors must have their temperature taken by a contactless infrared temperature scanner at all entrances and answer COVID-19 screening questions. Social Distancing in All Common Areas and Waiting Rooms. Our waiting areas throughout the hospital have been reconfigured to ensure that seating is at least 6 feet apart. Isolation of COVID-19 Patients. All known or

6 | HEALTH & FIT | SATURDAY, August 8, 2020

suspected COVID-19 patients (even those who need surgery) are isolated from other patients in specially designed negative pressure rooms. Thorough Cleaning and Disinfection. All clinical areas are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after every patient encounter. This has been our practice long before the pandemic. In addition, we are putting additional focus on cleaning high-touch areas. Limiting Visitors to our Hospital and Emergency Department. By limiting visitation, we can maintain social distancing and help prevent exposure to COVID-19. Virtual Care and Video Visits. Many members of our medical staff now offer tele-visits and video visits. And we recently invested in Care Connect, a virtual care platform that allows you to get care from anywhere with visit and treatment plans available within an hour. COVID-19 Testing. We test all inpatients and patients having surgeries and procedures. For more information about how we prioritize your safety, visit silvercross.org

Get the Care You Need When You Need It Ongoing news about the coronavirus pandemic may be making you feel anxious about going to the emergency room or getting the medical care you need. In fact, some experts estimate up to 30% of people are postponing or avoiding medical care due to coronavirus concerns. But delaying care for a heart attack, stroke or other medical emergencies can be life-threatening or lead to serious complications. All Silver Cross locations have rigorous measures in place for your safety. Don't let COVID-19 concerns keep you from seeking the care you need. Call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency department if you have any of the following symptoms:

• Chest pain • Compound

fracture (bone

visible) • Difficulty breathing • Heart attack • Ingestion of poisons • Major head injuries • Major trauma • Seizures • Severe abdominal pain • Severe burns • Shock • Stroke • Uncontrollable bleeding

Unique treatment takes the pain out of chronic migraine

When people hear the term “Botox injections,” the most common association that comes to mind is of wrinkle-free faces in Hollywood. But Dr. Isaac Mezo, neurologist with the Morris Hospital Neurology Specialists, has long been advocating its usefulness in medicine. “Botox is not just for wrinkles,” says Dr. Mezo. “It is an amazing medicine that has multiple uses even beyond neurology. It has become so widely used because it doesn’t really have the side effects that other medications do.” Botox, also referred to as Onabotulinum A, is a form of botulinum toxin – a neurotoxin produced by the bacteria that causes botulism. When purified and used in tiny doses, it is able to reduce muscle contractions for about three months. Dr. Isaac Mezo Since 2013, Dr. Mezo has successfully treated scores of patients suffering from chronic migraine using Botox injections with the goal of preventing, reducing and potentially stopping the migraines altogether. It is estimated that more than 38 million people suffer from migraines or other disorders that cause severe headache. Of those, more than 4 million adults experience chronic migraine, which is defined as at least 15 or more migraine days in a month. Approved by the FDA for treatment of chronic migraines, Botox is classified as an interventional headache procedure for the prevention of headaches. The treatment involves injections just under the skin with a very small needle in multiple areas around the head, neck and shoulders every 12 weeks. Patients usually experience noticeable migraine relief with

Botox by the second or third treatment, according to Dr. Mezo. “Every time the patient gets a treatment, the migraines will get less and less frequent to the point that they will hopefully disappear,” he says. “But Botox will not stop a migraine right at that moment like a Tylenol. The goal is to prevent migraines from occurring.” Most patients have no side effects to the Botox injections, Dr. Mezo says. If they do have side effects, the most common one is neck soreness for about a week after the treatment. Some patients who continue the treatments for two to three years eventually discover the migraines do not return. That’s why Dr. Mezo recommends patients commit to the treatment for at least two years. While Botox isn’t the only form of treatment used for people who suffer migraines, he says the success rate of treating migraines with Botox injections has been extraordinary. “It’s extremely successful,” Dr. Mezo says. “Since the day I started using this treatment, I can count in one hand the number of patients who did not get any efficacy with Botox injections. It’s the most effective treatment out there for chronic migraine.” If you suffer from headaches, migraines or chronic migraines, call the Morris Hospital Neurology Specialists at 815-942-4506 (Morris) or 815-467-0555 (Channahon).
