A VALENTINE FOR MAX
Max Overtop is an odd duck. He grew up in the shadow of an older sister; and she must have so dominated him that to this day he is a bit fearful of women in general. A large man, intelligent and handsome enough that women seek him out, he’s avoided commitment for years. In practice this has meant that he will ‘dump’ any woman he was been dating before Christmas, not so much a matter of being stingy as to avoid any appearance of lasting affection. So I was a bit surprised when, a few years ago, he announced that he had a big date set for Valentine’s Day. “What’s she like?” I queried. Almost expectably, he replied that she was tall and buxom, his ‘kind of woman, not the skinny sort’. He went on to wax enthusiastic over his plan to ‘take her out for a romantic dinner’ and did it to such end that I grew bored and changed the subject. Nonetheless, his enthusiasm for the new woman in his life led me, when I ran into him a week after Valentine’s Day, to risk boredom by asking him how it had gone. ‘A disaster’ he glumly responded. It had all begun when his car wouldn’t start; and then, like a row of dominoes, misfortune after misfortune followed. After fiddling a bit with his battery cables, and getting his new suit a bit greasy in the process, he realize he was in over his head and called his buddy, Mike Pronto. Mike, a frugal man, prided himself on his ability to buy ailing cars others had given up on, restore them to mechanical health and sell them for a quick profit. He always had a spare car or two around and generously offered one to Max. In gratitude, Max brought Mike a case of beer; and in good fellowship Miguel insisted that he and Max have one before Max had to pick up his date. Needless to say, one turned into five; and Max left Mike’s in good spirits, if a little unsteady. In fact, he tripped as he got into his borrowed car and ripped his trousers; but at the time it went unnoticed. It was a typical Chicago Valentine’s Day in that it was wet - both snowy and slushy. Traffic had been slow; and with his late start, Max was more than 20 minutes late arriving at ‘Miss Perfect’s’ home. Anxiety built on anxiety when she greeted him a bit frostily; so he gallantly, if somewhat clumsily, tried to ‘warm’ her up. He commented on her appearance. “You look wonderful!’, he exclaimed as he walked her to the car; then seeing a largish puddle next to the passenger’s door, he romantically swept her up and into his arms and placed her in her seat. Getting in on the driver’s side, he noticed that she hadn’t put on her seatbelt. “Traffic’s bad and the street’s are a bit slick; so put your seatbelt on”, he urged. She said nothing and did nothing. Max turned to her to remonstrate again and only then noticed that she was ‘out cold’. In point of fact he had rendered the knock out blow when he had inadvertently banged her head against
the car door’s frame. Guilt overwhelmed him as he shook her gently. She responded, but seemed unaware of her whereabouts. Having suffered a life of misadventure, Max recognized a concussion when he saw one; and with that he took her to a nearby hospital’s emergency room.

Offer Valid until February 28th,2013 By the time they were there, she seemed normal; but Max insisted on going in. After a two hour wait, not without incident, she was seen, diagnosed, prescribed for and pronounced able to return home. During the wait Max’s somewhat disheveled appearance and ‘beery’ aroma had, however, attracted the attention of a policeman there on a call. ‘You been drinking?’ he asked of Max. Max lied, of course, and said, “Just one beer, Officer.” The Cop turned to Ms. Perfect. “He been drinking while he’s with you?” Being the soul of honesty, she replied, “No, Officer; but I think he had been before he picked me up.” Pierced to the heart by her judgment, Max faced the Officer again. Stonily, the Officer advised, “I see you driving tonight; and I’ll run you in.” Prudence being the better part of valor, Max took him at his word and he and Ms. Perfect enjoyed a socially and physically frigid cab ride back to her home. Not inviting him in, she delivered her ironic encomium, “Thanks for a great Valentine’s Day. Stay away from me and never call me again.” Chastened, Max returned home. This Valentine’s Day don’t try to top Max’s story! Instead seize the day to demonstrate your love. Butler School District 53 names new superintendent By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com
OAK BROOK — Heidi Wennstrom grew up in a large family, was constantly surrounded by children and knew at an early age she had a passion for education. “My first job right out of college was teaching second grade, confirming that education was what I knew and loved,” Wennstrom said. “There is nothing greater in life than the opportunity to make a difference for children.” Wennstrom recently was appointed superintendent at Butler School District 53 and will assume the role July 1. The application process was not an easy road, though, as the School Board interviewed only seven candidates out of the 75 who applied. Only two were named finalists. Wennstrom said she was excited to be selected. “Butler is a wonderful school district,” she said. “The families, staff and Board of
About Heidi Wennstrom Age: 52 Residence: Antioch Education: Recieved bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Trinity International University and her master’s in educational leadership from Northeastern Illinois University. She also received a Ph.D. in educational psychology from Loyola University. Family: Husband, Gary, married for 32 years; four children (three girls and one boy) and one grandson Activities: Spending time with family, traveling, reading and cooking Education are really focused on the pursuit of excellence in education.” Wennstrom praised the work done by current superintendent Sandra Martin, who will be retiring. Wennstrom said she felt fortunate to be awarded the superintendent position and one of her first goals is just getting to know everyone. A “goal setter by nature,” she said she has a laundry list of personal goals. She wants to ensure children have a high quality of education, engage parents and staff as active part-
ners in the education of children and work with the School Board to ensure transparency. “The true work of educational improvement happens in collaborative, respectful learning environments,” she said. “I love that my job is about supporting people to reach mutual goals to ensure the mission is achieved.” Wennstrom said she will face the challenge everyday to make District 53 stay at its high regard. She also wants to bring a 21st-century environment to the school to serve the students for the future. This includes
technology improvements, improved learning environments and more curricular opportunities. “It is easy to get off track in response to the ever changing political landscape of education,” she said. “Our commitment to and daily pursuit of excellence, ensuring every child learns at the highest possible level, will ensure that students are well-prepared for the next level of learning and beyond.” Wennstrom currently serves as assistant superintendent for teaching and learning at North Shore District 112 and was formerly assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in Antioch District 34. Wennstrom said because of Butler’s small size, it makes a perfect fit for her — one in which she can directly affect the lives of children. “It’s like being a parent,” she said when describing her job. “There is nothing I won’t do to ensure our children are successful.”

New franchise in Hinsdale brings comfort, joy to seniors Share your thoughts
By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE — Aging is unavoidable, but happiness and quality of life is not. For those who are fortunate enough to live into their 90s or even 100s, the milestone comes with its share of baggage and some require a caregiver for help. Home Care Assistance, a franchise that recently opened a location in Hinsdale, provides caregivers who aren’t just there to ensure health, but also happiness. “It’s not about me,” said Victor Kanyendo, who has been a caregiver with HCA for two years. “I love what I do and my objective is to be effective and positive. Sometimes it is frustrating — I’m not going to make light of that — but I always remember and tell myself it’s not about me.” HCA offers experienced caregivers to assist hospice patients and seniors either part-time or 24 hours a day across the suburbs. Kanyendo currently serves a client 12 hours a day who suffered complications after knee surgery. He helps

of Japan called Okinawa that has more people living into their 90s and 100s compared to anywhere else. HCA studied Okinawa and saw common traits, such as a healthy diet, physical activity and strong sense of worth. One of the residents featured in a film on HCA’s website is Tusne Ganaha. She is 90 years old and climbs trees every day to haul in large bags of fruit. Through its research, HCA developed the “Balanced Care

Each caregiver is trained in this method, which is what HCA staff said differentiates them from other companies. “When caregivers come to a senior’s home, they see all aspects of their life,” said Margalit Tocher, president of Home Care Assistance. “A traditional caregiver would make sure the senior is clean, safe and fed. Home Care Assistance caregivers are also looking to see if they are happy.”

Caregivers for HCA do usual jobs, such as helping with hygiene, cooking and keeping the home tidy. But they also engage in fun activities — taking clients out for a walk or even a show. “A caregiver with you at home is focused only on you,” Tocher said. “You enjoy more individualized care and more consistent care because it’s always the same team of caregivers.” Becoming a caregiver with HCA isn’t an easy process, though. Janet Simons, manager of client and business development, said she isn’t interested in those who view this work as a temporary job. “Some people apply because they want a job, and others apply because this is what they want to do,” Simons said. “We’re looking for people who are caregivers because they want to be caregivers.” Kanyendo said his job is tremendously rewarding because he is right there at the front lines making a difference. No matter what the age, everyone has highs and lows, but it’s worth it for him to see his clients truly enjoy a high quality of life. “I always say my patient has a right to be irrational, a right to be angry, a right to lose control,” Kanyendo said. “I don’t have that because I’m there not to be angry, I’m there to be in control and make sure my patient reaches any goal they want to achieve.”

This is why: Form 1099R (Retirement) shows the following types of income: • Pensions • IRA withdrawals - including inherited IRAs • 401K withdrawals • Annuity withdrawals These forms include the gross distribution, the taxable portion and the code indicating why it was withdrawn. Codes may include 7 = normal distribution, 1 = early withdrawal (before age 59 /), 4 = inherited or G = rollover, among others. In addition, if you have some nondeductible IRAs (on prior Form 8606) some of your withdrawals may not be taxable. The computation is done on the 2012 Form 8606. New standards raising bar on student achievement Recently, the Illinois State Board of Education voted to raise the cut scores used to determine if elementary and middle school students are meeting State Standards on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test administered in early March. A student’s score on the ISAT assessment is used to classify that student’s achievement level into one of four categories: academic warning, below standards, meets standards or exceeds standards. As a result of this action, students will have to achieve a higher score to meet standards this spring than they did in the past. The ISBE has posted a description of the reasoning behind raising the cut scores that can be found online (http:// www.isbe.net/assessment/htmls/isat-cut-scores13.htm). The collective results of ISAT scores in a school are used to determine if that school is making Adequate Yearly Progress as described in the federal legislation known as No Child Left Behind. As a result of these changes, the percentage of students in the “meets” and “exceeds” categories used to determine if a school is making AYP will decrease for all Illinois elementary and middle schools. Unless Illinois is granted a waiver from U.S. Department

To the editor: My friend Mary has been calling people and asking for donations for AmVets for more than 20 years. She recently received a surprise call from her boss. Mary’s boss wanted to tell her some news that would make her very sad and yet very proud. One of the ladies she had called for more than 10 years had passed away, and her daughter thought it would only be right to let Mary know. She wanted to thank Mary since she knew how much she had truly cared about her mom. She asked if they could relay the message to Mary. It was this expression of thanks that meant so much! Mary was so shocked. Never in all the years that she has been a caller for AmVets had anyone ever called her to let her know someone had died. Many times the phone just rings and rings without an answer. Mary wonders if the person is all right. At other times the phone number is disconnected. In Mary’s mind, she thinks that maybe that person has passed See LETTERS, page 11

Have you put off doing your kitchen long enough? Is this the year you have vowed to do something with your cabinets? Have the horror stories of kitchen remodeling made you afraid to even think about it? With prices approaching and surpassing $100,000 for full kitchen remodeling, it is no wonder the Average Joe and Jane feel a little overwhelmed. Enter Kitchen Tune-Up! This locally owned (Downers Grove) National Franchise has been offering minor kitchen remodels for 19 years. Marty Ceranec, the owner, has won numerous awards from KTU for Sales, Customer Service, and Creativity. He received the highest award in 2000 when he won National Franchise of the Year and in addition, is a two time Angies List Super Service Award Winner. We offer Kitchen Solutions for Any Budget. “I think some people get sticker shock when they look at the price of redoing an entire kitchen and are overwhelmed. We work with clients every day who have the same anxieties,” says Marty. KTU can provide anything from the Signature Kitchen Tune-Up to a full blown design and remodel. “The bulk of our work last year was in refacing and door replacement. Door replacement doesn’t change the color, but replaces old particle board doors with new solid raised panel doors utilizing concealed hinges. Refacing, on the other hand, enables one to change their oak cabinets to maple cabinets without buying all new cabinetry,” said Marty. “These two options also save landfill space because we are saving the boxes.” Why have they been so successful? “I think it’s because we follow our trust points (below). Simple things like showing up on time and returning phone calls which is often lacking in the remodeling industry. I have chosen to keep the business small so I am involved in every job with my thee long time installers. By doing this we have become well known as experts in minor kitchen remodeling.” Kitchen Tune-Up also offers cabinetry upgrades such as glass doors, tipout trays, and full extension rollouts as well as counters in laminate, solid surfaces, granite and quartz (Cambria) “The Best Counter Top Around.” When questioned about any regrets, Marty replies, “We often get calls to update the kitchen when the owner is ready. We always wonder why they didn’t do it earlier so they could have enjoyed it sooner.

of Education to implement a new approach to determining AYP (application pending), the previous criteria will continue to apply. This would require that 92.5 percent of students meet or exceed standards on the 2013 ISAT. Information released by the state indicates that the new cut scores will cause the percentage of students classified as meeting or exceeding standards to drop by about 20 percentage points in reading and 25 percentage points in math. Analysis of past results in Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 indicates that the impact may be less severe but still significant. We are likely to see the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards drop by about 12 points in reading and
15 points in math. The result will be that most, if not all, of our elementary and middle schools will no longer meet AYP under these new criteria. District 205 began the planning and implementation of the Common Core State Standards when they were released in June 2010. Since that time, significant curricular changes have been made in both reading and math. We are in transition, as we are still being held accountable for the previous Illinois Standards through state testing, yet must prepare for the full implementation of the new standards in 2014-15.

Music to your ears Vibrant entertainment scene melts winter blues This month’s lineup includes One Night Band and LAVA Rock. And at 8 p.m. most Thursdays, fans can enjoy the sounds of The Pete Ellman Big Band.
By ALLISON HORNE msleditorial@shawmedia.com Winter often brings the blues, but many restaurants and bars in the suburbs are taking a different approach to the word “blues.” Instead of referring to the curl-up-in-bed kind of mood, they’re looking at the art form. Although hibernating might seem like a good option during winter months, it would be a little more fun to grab your dancing shoes and gravitate to the hot spots around town that host live music weekly. The suburbs often sit in the shadow of Chicago’s impressive music scene, but there are plenty of local venues that are starting to emerge as hubs for up-andcoming musicians. From rock ‘n’ roll to country, folk and even DJs, here are some of the suburban spots worth checking out.

See the comedy What: First Folio Theatre presents “Jeeves Takes a Bow,” based on P.G. Wodehouse characters Where: Mayslake Peabody Estate, 31st Street and Route 83, Oak Brook When: 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays; 3 p.m. Sundays; plus some added matinees and Sunday nights until March 3 How much: $26 to $37; 630-986-8067, www. firstfolio.org Christian Gray (as Bertie, from left), Kevin McKillip (Binky), Jennifer Shine (Ruby), Jim McCance (Jeeves), David Rice (Knuckles McCanne) and Lydia Berger Gray (Vivienne) star in the witty comedy “Jeeves Takes a Bow.” Photo courtesy of Stefani Foster LaBrecque
Stylish comedy By RENEE TOMELL rtomell@shawmedia.com Fans of the P.G. Wodehouse characters Jeeves and Wooster have a new plot to look forward to, with the third installment by First Folio Theatre in Oak Brook. David Rice of Clarendon Hills, who co-founded the troupe with his wife, Director Alison Vesely, plays a villain in the piece and previews what’s in store. Technical Director Kyle Gettelman of Warrenville also shares his role in bringing the comedy to the stage at the Mayslake Peabody Estate.
How many ‘Jeeves’ shows have you presented, David?
This is the third adaptation that Margaret Raether has done of stories by P.G. Wodehouse. She writes them for her own theater company in Rockford. We are lucky enough to snag the Chicago premiere in each case, and get to put them on right after they do. It’s another delightful, lighthearted, silly comedy. It’s family
friendly — (with) no language issues and no adult content of any sort. It’s a great way to get a much-needed laugh in the middle of winter. They are among (our) best-selling shows.
Explain the interplay of the main characters.
The basic heart of the Jeeves and Wooster stories is that Bertram Wooster is a complete and total twit, an airhead as we might say in modern parlance. His valet Jeeves is the perfect companion to keep him out of trouble and to manage to extract him from any difficulties he gets into. The series (is about) Bertie getting into trouble, and Jeeves finding a clever way to get him out of it.
You’re making a rare appearance on stage. What’s your role in the show?
I play a New York mobster just at the end of Prohibition, named Knuckles McCanne. With the assistance of one of his best friends, Binky, Bertie
Bertie to ask Jeeves to save the day in latest adventure at First Folio
manages to run afoul of this mobster and is in fear of losing his life.
The same actors are returning in the leads?
This is the third time we’ll have the great good fortune of (featuring) Jim McCance, who is marvelous as Jeeves, and Christian Gray, who is picture perfect as Bertie Wooster. We’re also lucky to be bringing back Kevin McKillip, who has played a series of Bertie’s dimwitted friends. Kevin finds a different way to make each (unique).
What is your primary role as technical director, Kyle?
Generally speaking, technical directors are the ones responsible for the execution of the scenic design. One of the things that is unique and fun about theater is that everything is always a little different. One show, we’ll be fabricating something out of steel, so it can be rigid and structural so people can climb on it. The next
show, it’s made of fabric or a lightweight material purely as a visual aesthetic.
What have you created for this show?
‘Jeeves Takes a Bow’ is a comedy (with) a pretty standard, realistic interior. (Yet,) the whole look of the set is intended to be one that is sort of comical … a space that is over the top. There’s a huge amount of trim work. (It’s) really the detail that counts — that all the different elements (are) put up cleanly. We create a palette for the actors to do … their craft.
Besides your graduate training, where did you pick up your knack for all these skills?
I grew up on a small horse farm, and have been building things and working with tools my entire life. My day job … (is theater department) technical director at North Central College in Naperville.

Hinsdale Central’s Brian Owens shoots over a York player Tuesday in Hinsdale. Owens scored 17 points as the Red Devils clinched the West Suburban Silver title.
Silver champs By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com
The old adage says defense wins championships. Even in a game that Hinsdale Central’s boys basketball team shot 53 percent (17-of-32) from the field, defense is what lifted the Red Devils to a West Suburban Silver win over York Tuesday that clinched the conference title. “Our defense has been our calling card for the most part during this stretch,” said Central coach Nick Latorre, whose team won its 11th straight game and won the WSS title for the first time since 2000. “We’ve had some great offensive games and some games where we’ve been bad offensively, but our
Game breakdown Hinsdale Central 54 York 39 Leading scorers: HC Brian Owens 17, Matt Rafferty 15, Alec Hutcherson 9, Jared Eck 6; Y Frank Toohey 8, David Cohn 7, Jack Heinle 6, Isaac McKinley 6 defense has been pretty consistent throughout this stretch of games.” The Red Devils (17-5 overall, 10-1 WSS) harassed the Dukes into a 13-of-55 shooting performance, forced 16 York turnovers and held Colorado Statebound standout David Cohn to seven points for the game. York had nine players score, but
none reached double figures. “Defense was what won us the game,” Central senior guard Brian Owens said. “We made every possession tough on them.” Owens helped put the Red Devils in control. He scored three points as part of an 8-2 Central run to close the second quarter, then hit a threepointer at the start of the third to ignite a 9-2 run. Those two surges turned what was a 12-11 lead into a 29-15 advantage. Defense has most definitely been a key for the Red Devils, but they also are closing out games well during their winning streak. When the Dukes fouled in order to stop the clock in the fourth quarter, Central made them pay by going 14-of-

17 at the line. They were 4-of-11 at the line before that. “We had a lot of leads early in the season that we blew in the second half, so hanging on the ball, making smart decisions and making free throws, that’s been the real key,” Owens said. The Red Devils’ conference title celebration started in earnest when senior role player Tanner Makris drained a free throw late in the fourth quarter, and it continued in a boisterous locker room after the game. “All the hard work paid off,” Owens said. “One of our goals this year was to win conference and we accomplished that, so we’re real happy right now.” “Anytime you win a cham-
pionship, whatever it is, it’s a good feeling,” Latorre said. “It’s a great accomplishment for our program, a great accomplishment for our team.” Winning the WSS title on senior night was reason to celebrate, but the Red Devils have bigger goals down the road and won’t lose sight of them. It’s back to work at 7:30 p.m. Friday night for the final WSS game at Glenbard West. “Hopefully this isn’t the pinnacle,” Latorre said. “Hopefully we continue to build and continue to get better.” “We just have to keep working hard,” Owens said. “We’ve been working our butts off, so if we keep doing that we feel like good things are going to happen.”

Allen’s goal: ‘Get there ... get it’ Hinsdale Central’s undefeated heavyweight Brian Allen sets sights on state title By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The state wrestling semifinals haven’t been kind to Brian Allen. In 2011 and 2012, he fell in semifinal matches. Both times he battled back to take third place. The Hinsdale Central junior heads to this year’s state meet with a definite goal in mind. “If I get there (to the title mat),” Allen said, “I want to get it.” With a 44-0 record and a full season of success, including the 285-pound title at last Saturday’s Class 3A Shepard sectional, things are seemingly in Allen’s favor. But after
Allen’s sectional scores Quarterfinals: 9-3 decision Semifinals: Fall, 4:45 Finals: 15-5 major decision his experiences the last two years, he knows not to take anything for granted. The bracket is set up for Allen to face Neuqua Valley’s Andrew Geers (37-0) in the championship match, but Allen knows he won’t walk into the finals. He was slated to meet Glenbard East’s D’Andre Johnson in a first-round match at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and things would only get tougher
from there as the tourney continues through Saturday. “I feel pretty confident, but after the first round there are two guys (Moline’s Adarios Jones and Lincoln-Way East’s Nick Allegretti) from the Moline sectional who were two of the toughest opponents I faced this year,” Allen said. “I’ve been in the semis twice and lost. I’m focused on getting there.” An overtime defeat to Bolingbrook’s Rob Bain in last year’s semifinals stung at the time, but it also gave Allen an extra boost as he got ready for this season. “I actually didn’t watch that Bain match until last week,” Allen said. “Looking
back on it, it kind of stinks knowing I was so close, but I was lifting weights the next day at 5:30 in the morning. It got me motivated. I’m bigger and stronger, and I’ve improved a lot of stuff. Overall, I think I’m a better wrestler.” The technique has been there all season for Allen, and as he prepared to head downstate, he did so with a humble mindset. “I’m going in with a 0-0 record and taking it one match at a time,” he said. “All the training is in, and right now I have to show up, compete and do my best, and hope that’s good enough to win.” Sophomore teammate Juwan Edmund also will also
be vying for a state title at 138 pounds after he finished third at the sectional with a 4-3 win over Marist’s Matt Sears. The third-place win capped a 3-1 day at the tournament for the regional champion. Edmund (38-9) was scheduled to face Waubonsie Valley’s Howard Beatty in the first round. Beatty topped Edmund 9-8 at 145 pounds early in the season. Matt Price (106), George Tolbert (120) and Ernest Battaglia (152) will be state alternates. James Manikas (126), Tom Ward (145), Tim Glavin (160), Keith Schmidt (170), Andrew Pyle (195) and Matt Allen (220) also competed at the sectional.

approach to his matches. “I’m wrestling smarter. Before I just do something, I’m thinking about it. Every position I’m in, I’m thinking ‘What can I do?’” Maslow said. “I feel like I’m riding kids out well, and I’m taking the first shot usually and that’s better mentally if I get the first takedown because then I know I’m pushing the action.” Maslow (41-3) drew Edwarsville’s James Mosher (28-7) in Thursday’s opening round with St. Charles East’s Keone Derain or McHenry’s Wade Lardy possible quarterfinal opponents. No matter the foe, Maslow was hoping to make his first state trip a memorable one. “I’m going to take it one match at a time and hopefully I’ll place,” he said. “That would be the ultimate goal.” South freshman Joshua King went 2-2 at the sectional and earned a trip to state with a fourth-place showing at 220. His 2-1 overtime win in a backdraw semifinal secured his trip to state. Nick Perisin (113 pounds), Ed Murphy (120), Nick Carlson (126) and Mark Kosiek (132) also represented the Hornets at the sectional but came up just short of earning state berths.

HINSDALE SOUTH On senior night in Darien, the Hornets fell to Morton 79-64 in Tuesday’s West Suburban Gold contest. South finished WSG play with a 3-9 record and will face a West Suburban Silver team in a crossover game on the road Wednesday. Addison Trail’s buzzer-beater sank the Hornets last Saturday. Jerry Stoltz and Barrett Benson each scored 10 points and Larry Motuzis and Justin Ward added seven points apiece.

Justin Maslow found himself in a strange situation early in his third-place match at the Class 3A Shepard sectional — taken down to the mat. In two previous match wins, the Hinsdale South junior was the one forcing the action, but things started off differently against Marist’s Jakada Hall, who earned the first takedown. “I knew he was kind of a funky wrestler, so I knew I had to watch my hips and watch my balance as I was finishing my takedowns,” Maslow said. Maslow rebounded and won the third-place match 8-3, including three takedowns, to secure a better seed as he earned his first trip to the state finals, a result that validated some hard work in the offseason. “It feels pretty good,” Maslow said of qualifying for state. “I feel like I deserve it, though, because I trained hard in the offseason and all that.” Maslow won his first match with a second-period pin, and, after dropping a semifinal match at 145 pounds, won twice in the backdraw to finish third. It was his 6-2 win in the wrestleback semifinals that secured a topfour finish and a trip to state, but taking third was a much better sendoff. “Without a doubt. It definitely feels better,” Maslow said. Maslow planned to spend the days leading up to the state finals improving his conditioning. What he didn’t want to change was his
