Willowbrook man wins Be a Loser contest SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BURR RIDGE – On Christmas, Nadar Najjar got a phone call that he hope will lead to a whole new life. The phone call he received was from Bob Diamond, chief club officer at Five Seasons Family Sports Club in Burr Ridge, who told him he had been selected as this year’s winner of the club’s Be a Loser contest. As the contest winner, Najjar will receive a yearlong family membership to Five Seasons Burr Ridge and other benefits with a total value of $12,000. But more than the monetary value, what Najjar hopes winning will mean for him is that start of a healthier life. The loser portion of the contests title refers to the contests mission, which through a combination of exercise, dietary changes and education of nutrition and fitness will help Najjar on the road to significant weight loss. Najjar, a 34-year-old father of five children, is a special education instructor. Najjar was looking for a one-day pass to the club in November while surfing online and discovered the Be a Loser contest entry page on the Five Season’s website. According to Najjar, he has

Najjar hopes to go from 267 pounds, his current weight, back to 140 pounds. added more than 120 pounds to his 5-foot 8-inch frame over the past 12 years. “It was the middle of the night and my entire family was asleep and there I am assessing myself as a father and as a husband,” Najjar recounted in a news release. “I was thinking about how can I be the best father and husband that I can be in the kind of shape I’m in?”

Figuring, what did he have to lose except the weight, Najjar entered the contest. Najjar said he used to be more active. When he was a student at DePaul University, he rode his bike all over Chicago. He took a job at a private school in Villa Park and after getting married, became a father in 2004, according to the release. With his new roles and re-

sponsibilities, Najjar said his exercise level decreased significantly, while he also started eating more. “I found I kept putting on weight and it kept going up and up and up,” he said. “Once I got over 200 pounds, I started feeling lethargic. After awhile, I stopped weighing myself.” As the years went by, more children and more responsibility allowed him to feel he was too busy to spend time exercising, he said. Now, he said, his children are one of his strongest motivations to getting back in shape. Through the program, Najjar will be coached by a Five Seasons fitness instructor and keep a journal of all the food and drinks that he consume in a day, with the goal of getting back to 140 pounds. His current weight is 267 pounds. The program includes two one-hour training sessions a week, an activity tracker, nutrition counseling, fitness gear and a weekly goal-setting workshop, according to the club. Najjar was chosen from eight applicants, including two men and five women. Four, including Najjar, were named finalists and interviewed by staff at the club.

Parent asks for board to discuss calender again During audience comments

at the District 86 Board of Education meeting Monday, Burr Ridge resident Yvonne Mayer asked the board to use a future meeting to revisit the idea of putting District 86 student on the same academic calendar of Lyons Township High School. Mayer said she supports students having their first semester final exams before going home for winter break. “I can’t begin to tell you the stress and anxiety that having finals after winter break causes for students,” Mayer told the board. “And that’s even before you factor in the poten-

tial for bad weather.” Mayer told board members that having finals after winter break causes students stress because they delay studying the first week of break. When they return to class, the end of the semester feels rushed and there is the potential for school to be closed for bad weather, further limiting student’s time to be taught by teachers and prepare for end of semester tests ahead of finals. Four years ago, Mayer said, the board explored putting students on the same calendar as Lyons Township High School, but there was pushback from

the middle school parent community. “It’s time to revisit this issue again,” Mayer said. Superintendent Law said a calendar committee is currently working on creative ways the school calendar can changed to meet the various desires of parents and is expected to bring a report to the board in either April or May. Law said in the past, input from parents strongly showed they did not want school to begin in August, as Lyons Township does, with semesters of an unequal amount of days of class.

HINSDALE – The District 86 Board of Education approved two advisory referendum questions to appear on the April ballot at their regular meeting Monday. Board members approved a question that will ask voters if the board should lobby for a state law that would prohibit teachers from being able to go on strike in a 4 to 2 vote. Board President Richard Skoda and board members

said the board of education was elected to make such decisions and were capable of deciding to lobby without input from the public. The board also had representatives who could lobby for them, she added. “We saw that voters didn’t want a strike,” Planson said. “We don’t need a referendum to know that.” Some member of the public in attendance at the meeting clapped after her statement. Skoda said the board’s lob-

HINSDALE – Hinsdale School District 86 announced students will use Presidents Day and a previously scheduled teacher institute day to make up for two days the school was closed in January because of frigid temperatures. Both Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South high schools closed because of low temperatures and negative wind chills Jan. 7 and 8. District 86 Superintendent Bruce Law said Presidents

Day was chosen instead of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday to give families advanced notice of the change in the school calendar and to keep the make up days as close to the days the school was closed as possible, rather than adding on days at the end of the school year. “Just taking those days and tacking them onto the end of the school year is not the same [as not having been closed],” Law said Wednesday.

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com The future of DuPage County may look bright in many ways, but there are still many challenges ahead, according to the county board chairman. In front of a crowd of elected officials, chambers of commerce and businesses, Dan Cronin gave an economically focused State of the County address Thursday in Woodridge. Cronin presented remarks and answered questions at the event sponsored by county economic development organization Choose DuPage and supported by chambers in Woodridge, Downers

Grove, Darien, Hinsdale and Lisle. The Chairman said he welcomed the opportunity to deliver such an address to so many in the business world, saying the “relationship between DuPage and our business community is vital.” And Cronin believed that connection was flourishing, touting a 4.5 percent unemployment rate, the lowest in the region thanks to a conscious effort to create a business-friendly environment, he said. “I do think we at the county all join in a chorus of voices that really create a culture out here in DuPage County ... that does really and truly convey the message that ‘We

want your business, we support business and we value economic growth,” he said. Cronin said manufacturing was climbing in the county, with 15 straight months of industrial vacancy rate drops through May 2014, and he projects a steady 3.75 percent growth in county sales tax revenue. The county also retains a AAA bond rating from all three major credit agencies, which is the case for fewer than 1 percent of all counties in the U.S., he said. The county is intending to eliminate a quarter-cent sales tax in 2016 as the maligned DuPage Water Commission transitions to a self-sustaining utility, a mirror of Cronin’s Accountability, Con-

solidation and Transparency initiative dedicated to reducing the size and cost of local government. The ACT initiative’s successes are highlighted by the county’s continued commitment to a balanced budget, the 45 government jobs that have been cut and more than $30.5 million the county has saved under Cronin’s watch, he said. “But our movement in DuPage is about more than cost cutting,” he said. “We are in the business of growing. Growing ideas, growing high-tech manufacturing, growing tomorrow’s businesses.” That is especially important with the changing demographics in the county, he said. Nearly 175,000 residents are considered low income by federal poverty standards, and more than 16 percent of children in DuPage County are food insecure. Cronin pointed specifical-

ly to the Rev3 tech and manufacturing incubator, the Elgin-O’Hare Western Access Project, a new regional global marketing initiative to help spur international exports and a recent U.S. Commerce Department designation the region will be eligible to apply for $1.3 billion in federal grants to support job creation. All would be important to give those in need “hand ups” and not “handouts,” he said. Greg Bedalov, president and CEO of Choose DuPage, said the marketing initiative was especially exciting for him, saying in 10 years working in economic development, he had “never seen the type of regional cooperation and collaboration that’s happening right now.” He has high hopes area counties will be able to work together even more to build a more stable economic future through improved marketing, transportation and investment.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Police Department released the results of its holiday drunken driving crackdown on Monday. The holiday crackdown, which ran from Dec. 19, 2014, through Jan. 4, focused police efforts on arresting and charge drunken drivers in force. The crackdown was funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation and was part of the state’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It of Ticket campaigns. The Hinsdale Police Department reported making four arrests for drivers who were caught behind the wheel and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Additionally, police reported issuing 32 citations for motorists who were not wearing a seat belt. “Drunk driving is deadly, and people can get too wrapped

up in the excitement of the holidays and make some seriously bad decision,” Hinsdale Police Chief Brad Bloom said in a news release. “The bottom line is if you have been drinking alcohol, you don’t belong behind the wheel. Never drink and drive.” With the holiday enforcement period over, Hinsdale police have now turned their attention toward Super Bowl weekend. The Super Bowl will be Feb. 1 and police will be out in force looking for drunken drivers beginning Jan. 30 and continuing through the morning hours of Feb. 1, when state statistics show the number of drunken drivers on the road increases. Chief Bloom suggests calling a taxi, using mass transit or designating a driver if you plan on drinking during the Super Bowl. Police also will be on the look out for drivers not wearing a seat belt during the upcoming campaign as well.

Children’s books receive new look for patrons of Hinsdale Public Library Early next month, the Caldecott Medal will be awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. This honor is given annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. If you buy, borrow or read books to children, you’re COMMUNITY familiar with that embossed VOICE gold sticker on the front of Karen Kleckner those gorgeous picture books. What you may not have been Keefe aware of is this distinction is given to the artist. In the best picture books, the story literally cannot be told without the artwork. Librarians from around the country spend a year looking at as many examples as they can get their hands on to select the best. Another Caldecott criteria I love is “the book displays respect for children’s understandings, abilities and appreciations.” How wonderful to have that reminder that the kids are the intended audience. At the Hinsdale Public Library we are making changes in our Youth Service Department to keep kids at the center of our children’s book collections, too. We are installing face-out bins for all of our picture books. If you’re old enough to remember record stores, these flipthrough shelves will look familiar! We want the illustrations that are such a powerful part of these stories to be at eye level for little ones. We’ve pulled some of our most popular picture books and organized them by category. We have bins dedicated to dinosaurs, royalty, things that go, listen/read-along, cartoons, concepts and best of the best (this is where you’ll find those Caldecott winners, along with many librarian favorites). “The enjoyment of picture books is a precursor to not only learning to read but also wanting to read,” writes Mary Renck Jalongo in “Young Children and Picture Books.” Letting your child help decide what books go home with you can help develop a lifelong love of reading. In constant rotation with my 4-year-old right now are the charming “Dog and Bear” books by Laura Vaccaro Seeger, “Duck Sock Hop” by Jane Kohuth, “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt and anything by the divine Mo Willems.

The first baby born in 2015 at Hinsdale Hospital was Madison Avery Knapczyk, born to parents Jennifer Miravete and Joe Knapczyk of Willowbrook, at 1:39 a.m. Jan. 1.

Willowbrook residents Jennifer Miravete and Joe Knapczyk celebrated a very special New Year’s Day with their newborn girl, Madison Avery Knapczyk, who was Hinsdale Hospital’s first baby of 2015. Madison arrived at 1:39 a.m. Jan. 1, weighing 6 pounds, 11 ounces. Welcome to the world, Madison! Kids hear a lot of voices telling them why they shouldn’t turn to drug abuse. Even if the message is the right one, sometimes the best way to ensure they’re listening is with a different messenger. Hinsdale Central has what sounds like the perfect speaker coming in February with former NBA player Chris Herron, a recovering drug addict. Community members are welcome at one of the two events. Please have a heart and use common sense with regard to taking care of your beloved pets. When it’s cold outside and you are cold, so are your pets. Like you and I, they need to be inside where it’s warm and cannot survive out in the cold. They are our family, our loved ones and are just as much a part of our family as the human members are. They should never be outside unsupervised, left out all night, left tied up or to fend for themselves. If you cannot do the kind, humane and loving thing by making sure your pets are safe and warm inside, then please do not make the lifelong commitment to take on that responsibility. On that note, if you see an animal in need, don’t be a bystander and do nothing and say “It’s not my problem.” Step up to the plate, make a difference and do the right thing. Let’s start out 2015 by making the world a better place for our pets and all animals.

Water damage shuts down DuPage Children’s Museum By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com NAPERVILLE – The DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville is closed while it cleans up and repairs damage caused by a flood last week. Museum spokeswoman Dee Dee McDevitt said a large water main on the exterior of

the building burst sometime between the evening of Jan. 8 and the morning of Jan. 9, causing water damage on all three levels. “[On the morning of Jan. 9], the staff that comes in to turn on the water tables walked into a stream everywhere,” she said. The museum is expected

to be closed for at least a couple of weeks, and all museum programs have been canceled through Feb. 8. McDevitt said the museum is not sure if the weather caused the water main break, and professionals were immediately brought to the museum to assess the damage. While the cost of the repairs

is not yet known, she said the financial implications will be significant and the museum will be reaching out for donations. The museum receives about 60 percent of its funding from donations and 40 percent from admission and program fees. “The timing [of the closing] couldn’t be worse because during January, February and

March, the museum experiences a high level of traffic,” McDevitt said. However, she said the museum also is taking this opportunity with the repairs and construction needed to see if there are any improvements that can be made. “The goal is to reopen better than ever before,” she said.

In response to a Sound Off comment in a Jan. 7 edition about Hadley Junior High School eighth-graders working on the problem of voter turnout, it needs to be kept in mind that those very same students are the future of leadership in the community. Having problem-based learning that tackles a real problem of voter turnout is the kind of learning that is going to help prepare these students for when they grow up. Students should be prepared for actual real-world problems and not just stick to reading, writing and arithmetic. The kind of thinking that problems should just be “left to the adults” is somewhat old-fashioned, which can be supported by the fact that the adults of today’s America have the most unproductive Congress, in addition to increasing problems with poverty. We all must remember the students of today are the adults of tomorrow.

‘Stop this madness:’ Snow plowed into driveways I am very fortunate to be able to live in Riverside with its lovely windy streets and small town feel, even though our taxes are high here. That being said, it is also wonderful that we have snowplows that are mostly diligent in keeping our streets clear of excess snow. [But] why is it that when the streets are plowed, the piled up snow gets shoved at the end of our driveways? It is so frustrating to go out and shovel the snow on the driveway, only to come out once again and find the snow piled up with heavy, slushy sleety snow that I just worked so hard to clear up. Isn’t there something that can be done to both clear the street and prevent the snow from being pushed into our driveways? I challenge the village to come up with a win-win solution for all. It may not be easy, but there has to be something that can be done to stop this madness.

Whether it be through the creation of her chainmail jewelry, woven tapestries or beadwork “painting,” the art of Western Springs resident Beverly Atseff takes time and patience. The intricate works come together slowly, from single threads, beads or rings of silver. They come together to form something complex and beautiful. Weaving, the process of taking single threads and pulling them tightly together with the help of a loom, is a centuries-old process of creating fabric. Although the process can be slow and often solitary, that also is what has continued to draw Atseff to create her work. “You have to eat the elephant one bite at a time,” Atseff joked of the long process. “I’m not a TV watcher, so I can weave at night. I like having something to do with my hands.” Her works can take 40 to 50 hours to complete, with her longest creation to date taking two years in all. Atseff attended college as an art major at Syracuse University in New York and graduated with a degree in design. She first took a class on weaving in her senior year at the university. Although, she initially thought the class would be boring and put it off, after completing a few projects, she found herself drawn to the repetitive process. Atseff bought her first loom in 1979, and she now owns more than 10, plus a few spin-

fan base, as well as cut down on overhead. Online, 2-B Weavers now sells instructional books on weaving and used equipment, as well as providing information about workshops and lectures and, of course, Atseff and Savel’s handmade goods. Atseff now works with a wide array of materials to create her work, including bamboo fibers, which produce a soft and silky fabric she turns into scarves. For herself, she also creates “paintings” out of small beads, which are sewn together. About four years

the result of the referendum, the board would or would not lobby for teachers strikes to be treated the same way. The board also approved an advisory referendum question that will ask voters if parents and students should give input on teacher evaluations and whether teacher class-

room attendance should factor into those evaluations. The vote passed 4 to 2, with Richard Skoda, Edward Corcoran, Claudia Manley and Victor Casini voting to approve the referendum question. Michael Kuhn and Jennifer Planson voted no and Kay Gallo voted present.

Superintendent Bruce Law and Assistant Superintendent Pam Bylsma said the administration already was working on how teachers are evaluated. If approved, the results would advise how the administration would consider the input of students and parents in teacher evaluations,

Skoda said. The referendum would provide the board food for thought when the administration’s recommendations would be brought to the board. There were four other referendums put to board members during the meeting which were not voted on because of lack of board interest.

Continued from page 3 The question would only be advisory, as the state would be required to pass a law similar to those that prevent police and fire fighters from being allowed to strike. Based on

and demonstrations of pioneer techniques. “I think there’s a challenge to it,” Atseff said of what drew her to weaving. “The fun is in the design of it.” In the early 2000s, Atseff and Savel started 2-B Weavers as a weaving business in Hinsdale before moving to Western Springs. The two decided to ditch the storefront in 2007 in favor of running the operation from their homes through their website, www.2-bweavers.com. Moving online has allowed them to connect with a broad

ning wheels, which are used to take wool or cotton fibers and spin them tightly together into thread. After buying her first loom, she continued to take more classes and develop her skills. She joined crafting guilds and met other members and then began to teach others in turn to keep the tradition alive. In 1993, she met her future business partner and fellow weaver, Beverly Savel, at Graue Mill in Hinsdale where they both volunteered. It was there that their weaving took off together through lectures

ago, she began creating chainmail jewelry. The jewelry is created in a similar process to weaving in that a pattern is developed and repeated again and again. The time-consuming process takes single chain lines and turns them into beautiful – almost ropes – of metal that become bracelets and necklaces. A love of teaching has allowed Atseff to share the talents she’s developed and keep the tradition going. Her latest lecture was Tuesday at an Illinois Prairie Weavers Guild meeting at Congregation Etz Chaim, 1710 S. Highland Ave., Lombard. Atseff and Savel also host workshops on a regular basis by appointment. “It’s the teaching I love,” Atseff said. “[Businesses] now sell looms for kids, and the explosion of knitting has gotten a lot of people interested.” While there are easy to follow pattern guides available, Atseff said she prefers to find inspiration in architecture and nature. She had taken inspiration from the bird’s-eye view of skyscrapers in Chicago, for example, to create patterns. Another piece takes inspiration from a close-up picture of a butterfly wing. “Architecture works well because it’s geometric, but the result becomes abstract. You wouldn’t look at [the work] and see a building necessarily. “I consider myself an artist,” Atseff said. “Weaving is often considered a craft. I think it’s an art. You have to create it. The beauty comes in the way you interpret it.”

Restaurant reviews

Two Brothers brewpub worth the hunt WARRENVILLE – Two Brothers Tap House in Warrenville isn’t as showy a dining venue as its landmark Roundhouse digs in Aurora, but gives patrons a ringside seat at the actual brewery. The tasty fare complements not only Two Brothers’ extensive creations and sampling opportunities, but more than 50 additional bottled artisan brews from the U.S. and around the world. Savvy fans of the craft beer enterprise, which has been growing by hops and bounds since brothers Jim and Jason Ebel took the leap in 1996, know they can time a weekend meal with a free tour of the brewery. They’re offered at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:30 p.m. Sundays, with no reservations needed. But added circus aside, the Tap House is an attraction in its own right. Tables, booths and high-tops dot the industrial space, whose walls sport giant, framed versions of a variety of Two Brothers’ artistic beer labels. The restaurant notes that all the meats are organic, and dishes are made from scratch. An added perk is that the kitchen serves late, which my companion and I took advantage of after a busy Saturday. Scanning the menu, I read the Brewer’s Reuben beef brisket is brined in-house for seven days and was sad to hear it had sold out earlier in the evening. But then I noticed the pulled pork, which is prepared with dry rubbed pork butt smoked over apple wood for five hours. The meat was tender and perfectly spiced in a Lexington-style vinegar sauce. It was such a generous portion that I would have liked a bit more of the coleslaw that topped it in a zesty interplay of texture and flavor. In a nice touch for the wheat intolerant, gluten-free rolls can be substituted at no extra charge. To accompany my sandwich, I almost picked the sweet potato fries, but am glad I opted for the roasted

HINSDALE – Matt Rafferty made his presence felt when Hinsdale Central’s boys basketball team needed it most. Rafferty figured into a pair of key second-half baskets, plus a few big buckets in the first half, to help lift the Red Devils to a 66-57 win against rival Lyons Township on Jan. 9. The victory helped break a tie atop the West Suburban Silver standings as Central improved to 4-0 in the league while LT slipped to 3-1. “I think it’s bigger because we were tied for first place in the conference, and that win was huge,” Rafferty said. “I think it’s a big confidence boost and momentum for the next couple games.” Though a key victory, it was just one in a season during which the Red Devils hope to add more to the total. “Both teams were 3-0 so it was an important game, but there’s a long way to go,” Central head coach Nick Latorre said. In a game that was close throughout, Rafferty helped Central grab a 44-43 lead heading to the fourth quarter with an assist on Thomas Ives’ 3-pointer late in the third. When the Lions tied the game at 46-46 early in the fourth, Rafferty drained a trey moments later to put the Red Devils ahead for good. Rafferty scored nine points in the fourth quarter to help Central hold off LT, and he tallied 12 points in the second quarter as the Red Devils overcame a 13-7 deficit for a 23-22 halftime lead. He was 11-of-16 from the field in the game, including 4-of-5 from long range. “He had a great game, but that was not out of the ordinary for him,” Latorre said of Rafferty. “He’s been doing it for us for four years; he just did it in different ways tonight. Early on they were collapsing on him in the post so we thought we could get George [Kiernan] down there,

Hornets power past Pirates in huge game By JASON ROSSI

Game breakdown

jrossi@shawmedia.com DARIEN – Barret Benson provided an early exclamation point in what was a statement game for Hinsdale South’s boys basketball team. Early in the third quarter, Benson faked a handoff pass, drove strong to the hoop and threw down a two-handed dunk, a highlight in a dominant 71-53 win against a powerhouse Proviso East team in a West Suburban Gold game Tuesday. “It was a huge game and we played really well together,” Benson said. “We came out with the goal to play as a team. They gave us an opportunity to get up on them right off the bat. My teammates made good plays to get me open and they got open for easy layups, so we just took what was there. It was a really fun game tonight.” For a team that has been up and down throughout the season, Tuesday’s win was a sign that things are heading in the right direction for the Hornets (7-8 overall, 3-2 WSG). They led 21-13 at the end of the first quarter, expanded it to 39-22 at the half and never let Proviso East back in the game. “This is something to build

but he had help as six other Hornets entered the scoring column. “That was our biggest thing on defense: Force the longest, toughest shot you can and we’ll go from there,” Hins-

Great team win,” Moore said. “It’s probably an eye-opener when people see this score. We’re going to be up and down. We’re not going to go on a run where we don’t lose another game, but we’re growing. ... This is something we can build on, for sure.”

Hinsdale Central girls get back on track after LT loss By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – For a Hinsdale Central girls basketball team consistently scoring in the 60s and 70s, a Jan. 9 game against Lyons Township was certainly out of the ordinary. After forging a 10-10 tie on Payton Katich’s baseline jumper late in the first quarter, the Red Devils struggled at both ends of the floor in a 5325 West Suburban Silver loss against the Lions. “We had not had a night like that all year,” Central head coach Tom McKenna said. “LT stopped our sets and played good defense and we got out of our system.” The Red Devils trailed 2414 at the half as leading scorer Gabrielle Rush was limit-

rition,” McKenna said. “We were averaging over 60 points per game, Gabrielle was scoring 28 to 30 points a game and four girls scored in double figures for us at the Wheaton North [tournament] championship game. I think LT did a great job. “I told the kids it happens sometimes.
