Big turnout for Christmas birding By NATHAN LURZ
nlurz@shawmedia.com Birders from around the county and beyond migrated into the forests, preserves, lakes and streets of DuPage County for the annual Christmas Bird Count in mid-December. Each year, the National Audubon Society sponsors counts across the country. The two events the DuPage Birding Club held centered around the Morton Arboretum in Lisle on Dec. 14 and the Fermilab in Warrenville on Dec. 20. Each group covers a 7.5mile radius from that point and works with area captains to coordinate movements and spot as many different birds as possible. “Our counts are some of the largest if not the largest in the Midwest,” said Jeff Chapman, the coordinator for the Fermilab count and an environmental consultant from Woodridge. This December, birders spotted a record number of different species – 89 – at the Arbo-
retum. The Fermilab count saw an above-average 83 species. The society celebrated its 115th Christmas Bird Count in 2014, according to the Audubon website. By working with coordinators like Chapman, the Society helps compile the data for both local posterity and a bit of analysis. “This is ... well-defined counting in the same spot year to year, so we can track the trends of certain species,” Chapman said. Chapman said the annual counts average around 100 birders apiece, and have been growing in recent years. “Why do people bird?” said Bob Fisher, member of the DuPage Birding Club and president of the Illinois Ornithological Society. “Why do they go out on a cold gray day in [December]? Part of it is the thrill of the chase.” Fisher said many enjoy being a part of a larger effort of cataloging, but there is a definite undercurrent of competition and adventure to the effort.
“In their secret heart of hearts every Christmas Bird Count birder longs to see some rarity on the Christmas Count to say ‘I saw it.’” he said. “And they don’t complete the sentence with ‘and you didn’t.’ They want a whole bunch of other people to see it.” At the end of the counts, the Birding Club hosts an annual dinner, tallying the final counts for all species across both events while they regale one another with bird count stories and bond over a shared love of nature. As to why so many show for winter bird counts that are, at best, bright and chilly and, at worst, covered in freezing snow? “Some people would call it crazy, but I think in the winter time ... people don’t go out and bird as much, and it’s a chance to get together and count all day, then get together and have pizza and drinks and become part of the season,” Chapman said. “During the holidays you get together with your family and friends, and for me that’s how ingrained this is every year.”

WOODRIDGE – Hollywood Blvd. is one of a few Chicago-area movie theaters screening the controversial comedy “The Interview.” Early last week, Sony Pictures authorized select independent theaters – Hollywood Blvd. is independently owned – to screen the movie, which stars James Franco and Seth Rogen as journalists instructed to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The flick has been surrounded with controversy since Sony announced the film wouldn’t be released following a cyberhacking of the company that included threats to any theaters that planned to screen the movie. Sony since flip-flopped on that decision, although many of the large movie theater chains haven’t backed off their decision not to show the movie. Scott Potter, marketing director for Hollywood Blvd., said the theater, 1001 W. 75th St., will have “increased security presence” while screening the movie. “We don’t have any big concerns because the Department of Homeland Security said there is no imminent threat,” Potter said, adding the theater is working with Woodridge Police. On Monday, Potter said the shows on Christmas Day and during the weekend went with-

Hinsdale representative: DCFS issues ‘a tragedy’ With Christmas a day away, the state Capitol was largely quiet. But some legislators said that was the exact time to think of children in the state’s care. State Rep. Patti Bellock, R-Hinsdale, called reports of physical and sexual violence within the state’s child welfare agency “an absolute tragedy.” She said an upcoming hearing to examine the problems at the Department of Children and Family Services could mark the start of a bipartisan effort to greatly improve child protection in Illinois. State Rep. John Cabello, R-Machesney Park, another member of the House Human Services committee examining the issues, agreed that change is needed, including making child protection a true state priority. DCFS has long been underfunded and understaffed and leadership at the top has too often changed, Cabello said. “I’ve worked with a number of DCFS people, caseworkers, in my area. I can tell you they are committed to doing what is right, committed to doing the most they can with that they have,” said the Rockford police detective who is on leave while he serves in the General Assembly. “They do the best they can with what they have, but what are we going to do – work them 24 hours a day?” Cabello said his district is among those with an outsized need for DCFS services, and he wants an in-depth look into the agency – from funding to practices to management. And if state spending diminishes, as expected, Cabello said the state must simply decide what needs to be funded and what does not. He said looking after Illinois’ elderly, children, disabled, education and infrastructure as among the true musts. “How about we fund what’s absolutely necessary and cut the fluff?” Cabello said. State Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, said the General Assembly has a duty to
look into reports of problems at DCFS. “We need to be doing everything we can to ensure the safety and well-being of the children under the state’s care,” he said. State Rep. Patti Bellock, R-Hinsdale, cited a recent auditor general’s look into specific practices in DCFS, which was made at the request of the Legislature. It showed, among other things: • DCFS did not have reports for management on the total number of its missing wards during the year. • DCFS estimated 2,800 to 3,100 wards went missing 26,500 to 29,200 times during 2011 and 2012 (combined). • Caseworkers sometimes were first to learn of a missing ward but did not inform the department’s Child Location and Support Unit. • There was a lack of documentation to indicate if supervisory review of missing child cases had been performed. DCFS came under a bright spotlight this month after a Chicago Tribune investigation found that from 2011 through 2013, state facilities reported 428 cases of sexual assault or abuse and 1,052 physical assaults. The House Human Services committee is set to convene at 10 a.m. Jan. 7 at the Bilandic Building in Chicago. Bellock has called for and says she believes there will be bipartisan support for a top-tobottom review of DCFS. She said a bipartisan task force or special legislative committee might be needed. While she understands DCFS had longstanding issues, inadequate funding among them, Bellock said, “This is unconscionable. These children are in our care. “Did [the state] take some of these kids from a bad situation and expose them to worse? Were some coming from a home where the care was simply not adequate and we put them in a setting where they became targets?” DCFS declined to take questions on the issues but re-issued an earlier statement from Acting Director Bobbie Gregg:

CLARENDON HILLS – The Clarendon Hills Police Department is seeking information about the driver of a vehicle that backed over an officer while the officer was speaking with the driver Dec. 28 near East Lyons Park. According to the police department, at about 9 p.m. Dec. 28 an officer was speaking with the driver of 2002 to 2004 Toyota Camry after responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle. According to Police Chief Ted Jenkins, the driver’s side door was open as the officer spoke with the driver. As the
two spoke, the driver suddenly put the car in reverse and accelerated. The officer was caught in the door of the vehicle some distance, before the driver fled the scene. Jenkins said the officer was taken to the emergency room and had several broken ribs but escaped critical injury. The driver was described as a man, possibly of Middle Eastern descent, about 18 years old, 5-foot-11 and weighing about 156 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information is asked to contact the department by calling 630-286-5460, or by email at police@clarendonhills.us.

‘There is one less family that is homeless’
This year was an exciting year for DuPagePads, as 392 people obtained permanent housing, 145,501 meals were served, 44,284 nights of shelter were provided and 1,360 individuals were assisted, including 241 children in 144 families. One of these families was Angel’s, and she shares her journey below. “With nowhere to go, my children and I walked to COMMUNITY DuPagePads. With a lump in VOICE my throat, tears in my eyes Carol and my pride in my purse, I Simler told them, ‘I need help.’” Myriad challenges led Angel to this point. She had been through an abusive marriage, suffered health complications, lost her $42,000-a-year job and no longer had a place to call home for her and her children. Angel describes her life at that time as being, “downright depressing!” Angel said the staff at DuPagePads offered her a helping hand. “They were there to root for me – that type of cheering section helps you face your giants.” In February 2012, Angel moved into her own apartment. “My case manager greeted us at the door and said, ‘welcome home.’” Tears welled in Angel’s eyes as she looked around her furnished apartment. “There were bags and bags. They had taken care of every detail, from light bulbs to dishes and everything in between.” Angel and her children had been doing well until this summer when Angel faced immense pain, which called for an emergency room visit and immediate surgery. Her son, who had accompanied her in the ambulance, was told by the doctor he could not stay overnight. “I was hysterical and with no relatives to call, I contacted my DuPagePads case manager.” Angel’s case manager showed up to the hospital at 4:30 a.m. to pick up her son. Following the surgery, she brought Angel’s children back to visit her and assured them their mother was going to be OK. Angel said DuPagePads has “been my rock through this trying time.” “From a ride to the grocery store to providing cleaning supplies, DuPagePads does whatever they can to help. Because of DuPagePads, my children can stay at their school in Naperville; there is one less family that is homeless, one less child on the streets. To my DuPagePads family, words cannot express the gratitude and admiration I have for you! Thank you for never letting go!” Interested in assisting families and individuals like Angel? Hinsdale Middle School students cut through the snow to their buses in February 2014 after sharing space and split attendance days at Clarendon Hills Middle School while their school was being cleared of mold.
Here’s hoping you had a great 2014 and that 2015 is even better. A lot happened in the Hinsdale area in the past year, and it’s been our honor and privilege to bring you the details of those stories and the fascinating people who make the news. If you missed our annual roundup last week of the top stories of the year, you can find it online at http://shawurl.com/1n7p. Thanks to two bystanders, an 80-year-old woman who mistakenly drove onto the Metra tracks in Western Springs lived to tell the tale. Ed Suarez of Western Springs and Monica DeNaut of La Grange were able to pull the driver from her vehicle not long before a Metra train struck the driver’s side door of the vehicle. Their quick thinking and willingness to act deserves recognition. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

A letter of ‘thanks’
We just wanted to send our thanks to you, next-door neighbor. Thank you for not delivering our package that was mistakenly delivered to your home instead of ours four days before Christmas. Thank you for holding on to it for a whole six days and not bringing it over. We truly had a great time making multiple calls to the shipping company and post office looking for our missing package. Most importantly, we thank you for giving up our package to the postal inspector and having him bring it over. Next time you happen to get our mail on accident, just wave us over when you see us, we’ll walk the 50 feet from our front door to yours to get our mail. I’m sorry you couldn’t enjoy the very expensive contents of the package after opening it and seeing what it was, but hey there’s always next year. Your

Thanks to good Samaritans
On Dec. 21, my wife and I were shopping in Meijer in Berwyn Plaza when she blacked out and hit her head on the floor. I yelled for help, and in mere seconds I had more help than I could have imagined. People immediately began to help. The store [employees] and strangers I will never know the names of helped me assist my wife. Someone helped me control the bleeding and someone called the paramedics. Thanks to you all. Also, it seemed like the paramedics arrived in just a couple of minutes and began to treat my wife (also asking me if I needed any assistance). Thanks to everyone. I just can’t thank you enough, but know that you have greatly reinforced my belief in mankind. See SOUND OFF, page 12

Now that commissioner [Sean] Durkin has had a ruling by an ad hoc board put together by the village and can run for election as commissioner of Downers Grove, I’m wondering who’s going to have to pay for the attorney that the Village Board members had to hire to advise them if Durkin could run because he failed to fulfill those obligations on the application for being eligible to run. Is Durkin going to pay for the advice the village got … or do the taxpayers have to pay for it?

He decides to help his master, Hero, win the heart of a woman he loves in return for winning his own freedom. The musical is inspired by the farcical plays of ancient Roman playwrights, which is part of what makes it so fun to perform, said Hinsdale Central senior David Petrak, 17, who plays the lead role of Pseudolus. “The play is fast-paced and energetic,” Petrak said. “It’s very fun and different [from what the students have done before].” Petrak said he’s looking forward to reprising his role at the upcoming encore performances at Hinsdale Central and at the play festival this month. But, it’s also a complicated play to perform and takes some serious dedication. “There are many plots that all get woven in that complicate things,” said Hinsdale

LA GRANGE – When you’re craving the taste of Italy, there’s no need to empty your savings account on plane tickets and hotel stays. Just head to downtown La Grange and visit La Buona Vita to experience delicious, homemade Italian fare. On a stormy December evening, my brother and I decided we were in the mood for a home-cooked, hearty Italian meal, and decided to give La Buona Vita a try. Eager to satisfy our appetites, we perused the long-sheet menu tempting us with everything from steak and lamb chops to seafood. To open the meal, we ordered fried calamari, fully aware of the amount of calories we were about to consume. Once we’d savored the well-prepared appetizer, our server brought our dinner salads and two generously portioned pasta dishes. My fellow diner chose the Linguine Viareggio, featuring linguine with mussels, baby clams and scallops dressed in a lively pomodoro sauce. The meal, according to my brother, had the perfect amount of spicy kick. While my taste buds usually crave a heap of spices, I decided to order the Rigatoni Emilio – pairing the pasta with fresh mozzarella, homemade marinara and garlic. The sauce was light and tasty, a great complement to the creamy mozzarella. After we consumed every last, delectable bite of our food, both my brother and I leaned back and sighed, knowing full well not one more ounce could make its way to our stomachs – we were stuffed. The restaurant also features gluten-free recipes including pasta dishes, so no one has to miss out on the pleasures of Italian dining. And the elegant bar offers craft beer on tap, along with select wines from around the globe. The bar is a focal point along the sleek dining room, where large windows look onto the cityscape. During our next visit, the dinner menu won’t be the only one on my radar, because I’m leaving room for one of the tempting dessert selections: La Buona Vita’s Molten Chocolate Cake. It promises a warm chocolate cake with a gooey center served with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce. On our visit, we found the food alone was enough to warrant a return trip, but the service added to the experience. Not only was our server attentive and extremely helpful when

YEAR OF THE CHAMPION
Celebrating the 2014 trophy haul for Hinsdale Central, South
By JASON ROSSI
jrossi@shawmedia.com With 2015 in its early stages, there is no better time to take one last look back on the successes Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South student athletes had last year in a slew of sports during the 2014 calendar year:

close to state titles in 2006 (second), 2010 (third) and 2013 (third), the Red Devils got over the hump and claimed the program’s first championship. Central was tied with New Trier for top honors after the first round of the state tourney with a 322 score, then pulled ahead on the second for a score of 634 that was 15 strokes better than runner-up Loyola. Freshman Roshannah Gaur finished tied for eighth individually while Jessica Lee, Selina Zeng, Danielle Smith and Erin Bruns had top-50 showings. Smith was the team’s only senior. Growth ongoing for Hinsdale South boys By JASON ROSSI
jrossi@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – The final two games of the Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament at York were symbolic of where Hinsdale South’s boys basketball team is in its growth process. A day after seeing an early lead slip away in a 53-51 loss against York, St. Patrick scored five points late in the game to hand the Hornets a 51-49 loss on the final day of the tournament on Tuesday. “Before the game we talked about how we’re growing,” South head coach Brett Moore said. “We’re growing up and it’s not always fun things that make you better. Especially as a basketball player, it’s the really tough, demanding things you have to do day after day that make you better.” Barret Benson’s put back of his own miss gave the Hornets (5-7) a 49-46 lead with 42.6 seconds to play against St. Patrick. A Shamrocks’ 3-pointer tied the game with 18.4 seconds left, and a layup after a South turnover led to the winning basket with less than four seconds to play. “I thought we did some really good things,” Moore said. “It’s a game that when we look back at it we really had a good chance to win, but they also stepped up and hit a big shot.” The Hornets finally found a way to feed the ball to Benson and Sean McCormack in the post, and the two accounted for 28 of the team’s 39 field goal attempts against St. Patrick. Benson finished with game-highs of 24 points and 13 rebounds while McCormack tallied 11 points and nine rebounds. Benson took 18 shots in the game, just seven less than he had taken in the previous three games combined. McCormack was 5-of-10 from the floor, making more baskets in the finale than shots he had attempted in the first three games combined (three). “I just shot the ball with more confidence today than I did the other days, and the shots went down,” McCormack said.
