Hinsdale Central High School students ask Rabbi Max Weiss questions about Jewish history and culture in preparation for their production of “Fiddler on the Roof” in March.

By DAN FARNHAM

dfarnham@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Hinsdale Central High School’s March production of “Fiddler on the Roof” will be a departure from what many of the students are used to in musicals. Show director Chris Hicks said besides the music being in a minor key, the subject matter is more serious – Russian Jews in 1905 being forced to leave their village. “They have to do a lot of historical research to know what it’s like to be these people,” Hicks said of the students’ roles. To get a historical perspective and learn about Jewish culture, she brought in Rabbi Max Weiss from Oak Park Temple on Jan. 22 to talk to the students.

Weiss said he spoke about Jewish life and the Pale of Settlement, a region in Czarist Russia where Jews were allowed to live. Hicks said it was important to bring in an expert on Jewish culture because of the small Jewish population in the Hinsdale area. “I think the historical perspective of 1905 Jews in Russia, but being a contemporary perspective – what’s it like to be an adherent of Jewish principles today – would be something the kids

would get a lot out of,” Hicks said. Weiss, who had spoken to a group performing “Fiddler on the Roof” once before, said he thought the students were engaged. “I think they were curious about what Jewish life was like and what the pressures where like during that time period,” he said. “They were trying to further flesh out the characters.” Ike Ihemeson, a senior who will be playing Avram the bookseller, said he has previously had little experience with Jewish culture but felt he was able to learn more from listening to Rabbi Weiss. “He talked a lot about what we’re acting out right now and how it’s being applied,” Ihemeson said. Hicks said the students, who had read the script of the musical, asked ques-

tions about the importance of matchmaking, blessings and the Sabbath. “They were coming from the knowledge of the play and he was coming from his knowledge, and he was able to fill in a lot of gaps that they had,” she said. Weiss said “Fiddler on the Roof” is an entertaining show and hopes to see Hinsdale Central’s production. However, he said the show is more entertainment than a completely accurate story, although he said the focus on family and outside pressure from Russian authority was accurate. “I told the kids that you don’t go to ‘West Side Story’ to learn about life in New York,” he said. “Fiddler on the Roof” will be staged March 12 to 14. Business experts ‘cautiously optimistic’ for 2015 By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com

Theresa Schulz (center), president and CEO of Schulz Properties in Downers Grove, offers her economic outlook for 2015 on Jan. 27 at the Suburban Life Media Economic Forecast 2015 luncheon at Drury Lane Conference Center.

Watch online Check out video of the local business experts offering their economic forecast for 2015. Visit http://shawurl.com/1p45. Theresa Schulz, president and managing broker of Schulz Properties Commercial Real Estate in Downers Grove, responded to a question referencing the state of the commercial real estate industry. “What I’ve seen is a change in the big-box retailers,” Schulz said. “They have maxed out in the market place. ... The grocery stores made a major impact in 2014. ... We are so grateful for Caputo’s coming to the market, and they brought a new element into the market.” Heath Ashenfelter, division vice president of True Value Company Chicago, felt a two-prong approach would

be the best method when it came to e-commerce and how that affects brickand-mortar locations. “For folks shopping for products $500 or more, say a lawnmower in my world, 80 percent shop online prior to engaging with a brick-and-mortar store,” Ashenfelter said. “More important is that on average, those consumers spend 80 days shopping online before making a purchase.” Ashenfelter stressed that it is crucial to businesses to identify their brand by having a viable website that also is mobile for customers that are researching competitors websites while inside their store. The second approach is to consider the different shopping patterns of Generation X that tend to want experts to fix things and Generation Y, who are interested in projects they will do themselves, he said. “These folks’ expectations are different and you have to market differ-

ently,” he added. In speaking to the skill set required for future employees who are still in college, Timothy Ricordati, dean of the School for Professional Studies at Elmhurst College, cited a study from the Association of American College and Universities that asked employers what skill they would seek in an employee. “Ninety percent said the most important characteristics are soft skills: critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills and the ability to work in teams,” Ricordati said. “The undergraduate major of that person is secondary to having those skills. That is eye opening.” Ultimately, for businesses in 2015, the future does look bright. “Falling unemployment, low fuel costs and low interest rates,” said Scott Magnesen, MPW Group, who helped sponsor the event. “We are not in a bad spot.”

The million-dollar question always seems to ponder what the future will bring. Prosperity? Jobs? Hard questions with no easy or onesize-fits-all answer. A panel of experts tackled some of those difficult questions Tuesday during the Economic Forecast 2015 event hosted by Suburban Life Media. Keynote speaker John Quigley, president and CEO of Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce, offered a mixed bag of news in his opening remarks to the more than 100 business and community members in attendance at the Drury Lane Conference Center in Oak Brook Terrace. “I’ve lived in the western suburbs for almost 60 years,” Quigley said. “It’s always been a vibrant place to live. This is a great idea for a conference and great place to get business leaders together.” He offered snapshots of economic growth in 2014, including that the nation is experiencing the fastest job growth since 1999, interest rates remain at historic lows to help keep inflation rates in check and the national unemployment rate is less than 6 percent, although Illinois currently is at 6.4 percent. A banker for 30 years, Richard Reichert, president and CEO of Community Bank of Elmhurst, also has seen positive signs of economy returning to life. “I am cautiously optimistic for 2015,” Reichert said. “I’ve seen a stronger economy, especially in east DuPage. We’ve seen some commercial customers make new investments in equipment and new product lines.” There also has been investment in Elmhurst through the use of a tax increment financing district in the north end of Elmhurst, anchored by a new grocery store, as well as downtown development, he added.

DOWNERS GROVE – Once upon a time, businessman Jim Legner attended the Dungeons and Dragons Club at the Downers Grove Public Library when he was in middle school. It was an activity that would have a lasting impact throughout his quest into adulthood. The Clarendon Hills resident has been involved with family entertainment-based attractions since he opened the fun-house maze Amazing Chicago 14 years ago on Navy Pier. He visits there annually with his immediate family and is all too familiar with the extent of the poverty there. He felt that there was no better place to donate his goods, then to the children in Guatemala. Today, Johan’s simple but extraordinary idea has blossomed into a full-ledged organization that he now calls, “Goals4All”. It has been in existence for almost six years now and every year, a different school in Guatemala is chosen to receive all of the equipment Johan gathers throughout the year. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren find support and success More than 2.5 million grandparents in America are raising their grandchildren, and almost 100,000 throughout Illinois do so, according to AARP. For many grandparents, the challenges they face in being caregivers can be numerous and complex. To help them cope with those challenges and succeed, Metropolitan Family Services DuPage Center COMMUNITY offers Grandparents Raising VOICE Grandchildren. Ann Grandparents Raising Grandchildren is a drop-in Pinkney support group from 6 to 8 p.m. monthly on the second and fourth Mondays at Metropolitan’s DuPage Center, 222 E. Willow Ave. in Wheaton. The group, which has been helping families for more than 20 years, provides emotional support for grandparents as well as links to resources such as counseling and other services. There is no cost, and attendees can come as often as they like. Childcare is offered for grandchildren ages three to 13. The group starts with a half-hour pizza party for the grandparents and grandchildren, followed by the support group for the grandparents. Grandparents gain many benefits by participating, starting by learning they are not alone. “The grandparents get to connect with others who are experiencing what they are experiencing – their phase of life puts them out of touch of most of their peers,” said Kelly Reid, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren facilitator. Getting to share with and learn from peers helps grandparents deal with special challenges they encounter, such as the fact that many of their grandchildren have experienced emotional or physical abuse at the hands of their parents, because of parents’ struggles with mental illness, drug addiction or alcoholism. Grandparents also have their own matters to deal with, such as health issues or limited finances, as many are on fixed incomes. And often there is grief and loss, as they think about what they thought they would be doing at this point in their lives – enjoying life as retirees, traveling, etc. To attend the group and for information, contact Kelly Reid at 630-784-4839 or reidk@metrofamily.org.

OUR VIEW

Breuder’s windfall part of a pattern of poor leadership In a state with budgets in disarray, with the biggest pension crisis in the nation, with one governor in prison for corruption and another just recently released, it’s pretty tough to stomach Robert Breuder’s $760,000 payoff to retire early as College of DuPage president. At $142 per credit hour, a full-time student at College of DuPage taking 15 credit hours of classes can expect to pay $6,390 in tuition and fees alone. So Brueder’s windfall could pay for 118 students to go to school for a year, tuition free. Beyond the money itself, there’s the problem of what it represents. With this deal, which the College of DuPage trustees have approved twice now, Breuder gets to walk away from this job proud of all his achievements, convinced his tenure was a magnificent success, marred only by some meaningless unpleasantness at the very end. Oh, and he gets a building named after him. But what we don’t know is how many of those achievements and grand successes are empty. Breuder’s surprise retirement has come on the heels of the release of an email that showed the kind of dirty politics he’s capable of. He’s been exposed as just another Illinois charlatan, the kind of leader who has no qualms about pointing one way and then running the other. Breuder’s email to the board, which leaked in July, shows him proposing to deceive the state by making a planned project more politically attractive in order to wrangle $20 million in funding that the college was owed. In the email, Breuder expressed frustration over dealing with the governor’s office to free up the $20 million and said he wanted the board to convey the need for a teaching and learning facility as a means to obtain the money. “I have no problem with [board members

David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

commenting on the need for a facility]; however, not being able to say how we would use the state’s money (perhaps no real need) could lessen our chances to break the money loose at this time (the political moon is rising),” Breuder said in the email. “A building that focuses on teaching and learning is politically attractive; more so than let’s say a student center, PE facility, etc.” Breuder also suggested getting the funding from the state and coming up with a plan of how to spend it at a later date. “There is also the option of telling the Governor we want the money, will bank it until we figure out how to use it and then building something,” Breuder said in the email. “Bottom line: I need some room to breathe on this matter so I can enhance the likelihood we get the $20 million soon.” The Chicago suburbs have seen something like this play out before. It was only in 2009 that McHenry County College up in Crystal Lake told their president, Walt Packard, his services were no longer needed. They decided they couldn’t fire him, though, and gave him another $200,000, plus benefits, for his trouble. Looking further downstate, when University of Illinois President Michael Hogan was fired in 2012 after just 20 months on the job – after succeeding another fired president – he was awarded a one-year, $285,100 “sabbatical” before he then returned as a history professor. Then these “leaders” go on to collect exorbitant pensions on top of the one-time piles of cash. As Illinois residents, as taxpayers in DuPage County, we can have no tolerance for these kinds of shenanigans anymore. We don’t want to hear that this is how things get done. Somehow, other states manage to get things accomplished without constantly resorting to dirty dealing. These payouts for failure have to stop.

SOUND OFF

With the exception of board member Kathy Hamilton, please hand out the dunce caps. [It’s] just incredible that this group, including Chairwoman Erin Birt, is so naïve and can’t understand their only duty is a fiduciary one to taxpayers and students. [Robert] Breuder has clearly worked in his personal best interest, but why is the board so willing and helpful to allow it? Put their hats on, move them in the back room and replace them all, except Hamilton.

Why does Westmont bother with mosquito abatement?

Not a ridiculous complaint I would like to respond to what I saw today about ridiculous complaints. People are mad that snow is left on their driveways. When you’ve had 2.5 feet of snow and had back surgery and you can’t get it shoveled, can’t get in or out of your driveway, that’s not a ridiculous complaint.

Sounding off about Sound Off I enjoy the Sound Off column. I like people sounding off, expressing their feelings, giving their opinions. I’m even for expanding the column space. That’s me, sounding off.

Driving dangerously After reading Sound Off, I had to respond regarding a stop light on one of the side streets from the Burlington Highlands. I have lived here 43 years and have witnessed so many crashes, it would surprise residents from other parts of Downers Grove. Traffic moves so fast in four lanes and the turn lanes, you take your life in your hands trying to turn left. None of us do. We drive out of our way to go east on Ogden [Avenue]. I guess you have to live here to understand this issue. See SOUND OFF, page 12

We know dogs bark, but not for 15 minutes to an hour nonstop. We know you hear them, but you do nothing. Please have some common courtesy for your neighbors.

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees is scheduled to meet again Feb. 19. taxpayers prior to voting Jan. 22. “This board admits that it secretly negotiated Dr. Breuder’s severance agreement for nine months, then didn’t recite the details into the record before last Thursday’s public vote,” he said. “That violated the Open Meetings Act.” Andrzejewski and Edgar County Watchdogs have filed suit against the college for the alleged violation. DuPage County resident Richard Skoda echoed the statements of many that the public had lost respect for the board’s trustees.

3 CONVENIENT LOCATIONS College of DuPage Faculty Association President Glenn Hansen said Monday there are “several concerns” about the buyout the Board of Trustees accepted for Breuder. “No one else at the college gets an incentive to retire early,” said Hansen, who is a photography professor. The amount of money Breuder will make between his $762,000 severance payment and his salary between now and his retirement is close to $1.3 million. That money, Hansen said, could be used to fund 91 two-year, full-ride scholarships. “We would prefer to see him gone now,” Hansen said. “If you’re buying him out, he’s leaving the college this January.” The Faculty Association voted no confidence in Breuder in September and since then have not heard from any trustees about the vote. Part of Breuder’s buyout allows him to assist in the search for the next president, which Hansen said is particularly troubling. “In light of our vote of no confidence, we see that as problematic,” he said.

GLEN ELLYN – An estimated 400 members of the public attended Wednesday’s special College of DuPage Board of Trustees meeting to air their grievances about the school’s president’s severance payment. The board voted – for the second time – to approve the $762,000 in sev- Robert erance for college Pres- Breuder ident Robert Breuder’s retirement. Trustees voted 6-1 in favor of the buyout, with Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton as the lone dissenter. Wednesday’s meeting was the board’s second in less than a week to discuss the retirement package, and was called to clarify a procedural motion regarding whether the board should have formally closed debate before voting on the severance during the first meeting Jan. 22. In the end, the vote remained the same, with trustees approving an addendum to Breuder’s contract allowing him to retire March 31, 2016 – three years earlier than anticipated. In addition, Breuder will receive a $762,867.77 lump-sum payment, according to the board-approved contract provisions. The college also will name its new Homeland Security Education Center after him. Trustees indicated their hands were tied on the buyout because of how previous boards had structured Breuder’s contract. “In an ideal world, we wouldn’t have severance packages,” Trustee Kim Savage said. “But we do have a contract that, if we end the contract, we owe him the balance of the contract.” Chairwoman Erin Birt said the board quantified 1½ years of Breuder’s salary and benefits when coming to an agreement on the amount of money for the severance pay. “I think every single person around this table worked very hard at this,” Birt said. That didn’t stop the public from attending in droves to voice their disapproval. In all, about 400 people came, with 75 speaking at a public comment session that ran more than three hours. Adam Andrzejewski, founder of Elmhurst-based watchdog group For The Good of Illinois, which has been working to make details of Breuder’s contract public, said the board violated state law by not providing contract specifics to

Pace seeks funding for $2.3 billion project SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Pace is banking on a long shot to find a shortcut to funding a two-step transportation plan that would improve bus service to the suburbs in a six-county area. Pace has submitted a $2.3 billion plan to the U.S. Department of Transportation for review through the Projects of National and Regional Importance program with the hope its plan will be picked for funding from numerous other plans submitted from transportation agencies around the country. The Rapid Transit Network has two components: The Arterial Bus Rapid Transit System would add routes and enhanced stations, run on an express basis with less frequent stops and the renovation of Pulse stations would provide easier access to buses and have an improved waiting environment, as well as electrical signage indicating bus arrival times. The Suburban Expressway Service would essentially expand the service initiated in 2011 on Interstate 55 where buses ride on expressway shoulders to the far west suburbs and back to such destinations as the U of I campus in

ridors more quickly.” The $2.3 billion cost for the plan includes purchasing additional buses, the construction of three garage facilities and technology that allows buses to communicate with traffic signals. Pace has a pilot program with IDOT in Chicago’s south suburbs where buses communicate with traffic signals – much in the same way fire trucks and emergency vehicles can – to allow buses to pass through traffic signals if a bus is running late or to clear a bus from a busy intersection after passengers disembark. “But this is a lower level of priority,” Wilmot said. “Our system sends a request to the signal. It will only change if it doesn’t negatively impact the traffic flow on the cross street. “ However, submitting the applicaShaw Media file photo tion does not necessarily mean the A rider boards a Pace bus in Chicago’s western suburbs. West Chicago resident Louise Handel, who is an alumna of the college, said she didn’t like that the trustees shifted the blame. “I’m kind of offended and insulted when I hear board members blame previous boards,” she said. “You don’t just get to say, ‘Pass, that wasn’t me.’” State legislators even took time to address the trustees. at the college. “What you have done as a board contributes to the bad reputation Illinois has with corruption,” she said. Late last week, Ives announced she would ask the state Auditor General to audit the state funding the college received during the past three fiscal years. She said she wouldn’t hesitate pulling $762,000 from the college’s state funding as a result of Breuder’s buyout. “I went out on a limb. I defended the College of DuPage in the spring session,” Ives said. “Now how can I go back and tell those people we need more money from the state?”

Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, also criticized the board for the amount of the severance payment. “This is outrageous. There is no precedent for this in a community college setting in Illinois,” Breen said. “I hate to say this, but this board has betrayed the trust of this community.” Breuder refused to comment on his retirement and the proceedings surrounding it. Several members of the public were upset Breuder would be the Homeland Security Education Center’s namesake, a decision the board voted in favor of in May 2013. Area residents urged the board to reconsider and name it after Staff Sgt. Robert Miller, a Wheaton resident who fought in Afghanistan and died protecting his fellow soldiers. He received the Medal of Honor in 2008. Kirk Allen, of Edgar County Watchdogs, said Miller would be a much more appropriate choice because he “paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.”

Trivedi said raising awareness about what nonprofits offer and how to volunteer is “90 percent of the battle”, and having support from the county, state and DuPage Regional Office of Education, which is working to raise awareness among schools, could go a long way toward upping the level of commitment across the county. She said her organization plans to use its connections to popularize #GivingDuPage, in part by providing sample media kits for groups on its website. County board member Bob Lars-

en said the effort’s organizers plan to meet with the DuPage Mayors & Managers Conference. “DuPage County is a remarkable community,” he said. “The ability to put your time to an organization and put your skills to bear is incredibly valuable, and we have so many incredible people in this county who want to do that.” By getting people involved, the county and its nonprofits can better leverage their ability to help the community. Since September, Giving DuPage has generated nearly 300 volunteer referrals through its website, Giving DuPage Board President Paul Feith said, and it hopes to hit more than 1,000 by the end of 2015. “It’s why we’re on this Earth, it’s why I ran for office, I certainly didn’t do the job for money,” Larsen said. “I do it because I believe in service. ... Bien Trucha treats Glen Ellyn to a toda madre GLEN ELLYN – Newcomer a toda madre is a testament to the importance of culinary balance. The Mexican eatery, transplanted to Glen Ellyn by Geneva’s Bien Trucha, opened late in 2014, with equal parts sophistication and comfort. Nestled in the heart of downtown, the small-town charm of the restaurant’s surroundings provides a pleasant contrast to its elegant, urban interior. Behind the bar is an exposed brick wall boasting a vast array of tequila. The vintage molding on the ceiling is glazed an elegant white. Modern blue tiles cover the floor of the bar, while the dining room is softened by hardwood and low lighting that bathes an abstract floral mural’s organic tones. The aesthetic is contemporary with a hint of nostalgia. Even after 9 p.m., the place was packed, buzzing with upbeat Friday night chatter. Several parties mingled near the bar, hoping to score a table. Fortunately, my dining companion and I had a reservation. We were seated, and a bowl of thick tortilla chips appeared, accompanied by smoky refried beans. The menu features a variety of items, from appetizers to full plates, all of which are meant to be shared. We began with an appetizer of tostada de ceviche topped with frizzled leeks. Spotlighting tilapia and apple, it was aggressively bright and acidic – an energizing start to the meal. Warm tacos pescado followed, the mild fish accented with creamy red cabbage slaw. We couldn’t limit ourselves to just one style of taco, and ordered the chilango, as well. The quartet provided a pleasing, adventurous medley of textures, from the velvety salsa verde cruda to the tender skirt steak to chicharron for engaging crunch. We also opted for the frijoles borrachos – drunken beans with pork belly, pico de gallo and Mexican beer – which

As the designated driver, I stuck with the nonalcoholic limonada, which was sweet and refreshing. Throughout the evening, the staff was kind, attentive and unintrusive – but a toda madre’s service really shone during dessert, when the flan

we had hoped to order was sold out, and the restaurant instead offered us a complimentary Carlota. When the plate arrived, we were glad to have taken them up on it. A win and a loss Rafferty suffers injury while leading Central boys against York By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com

HSL

ELMHURST – Matt Rafferty didn’t have a Superman cape tucked under his Hinsdale Central basketball uniform. It would have been fitting if he had. Rafferty injured his right hand with about three minutes to play in the third quarter of a Jan. 23 game against York, but the senior still converted a three-point play with 23.6 seconds left in the game to lead the Red Devils to a 50-48 win. “He showed a lot of grit and an unbelievable amount of toughness to play through that injury,” said Central head coach Nick Latorre, who initially believed Rafferty broke a bone in his hand. That diagnosis was confirmed after Rafferty visited the doctor on Monday. The Red Devils will now have to regroup without the services of their standout post player. “He’s going to be out a significant amount of time,” Latorre said. “Going forward we’re going to prepare the boys like we always do. Guys will have to take on slightly different roles. We’ll all have to work a little harder and execute a little better.” Even dealing with the injury against York, which prevented him from playing the following day against St. Joseph, Rafferty was productive. He put in a layup on a Jordan Bradshaw feed with 1:16 left in the third and blocked a shot with his right hand in the waning seconds of the frame. After missing three consecutive free throws, Rafferty hit the second of a pair with 3:10 to play before converting the three-point play to seal the win. He scored eight points and blocked a pair of shots after the injury. “You could really see it on the free throws,” Latorre said. “He’s shooting nearly 80 percent from the free throw line this year and he missed two frontends, but he really toughed it out down the stretch.” The late heroics came after Central saw York mount a big comeback. The Dukes nearly went the entire first quarter without scoring a basket be-

The Dukes went on a 17-4 run over the final 5:53 of the first half to get within 25-24 at intermission. Jayvon Thomas tied the game at 44-44 with a long jumper, then put the Dukes ahead 46-44 with a driving layup with 3:23 to go. Another layup by Thomas, who finished with a game-high 19 points, put York ahead 48-45 with 1:42 left before George Kiernan’s turn around jumper and Rafferty’s three-point play closed out the game. “I think we did a good job keeping our composure the whole game. We never really tried to do too much, we just stayed within ourselves,” Central

point guard Jordan Bradshaw said. “They hit a couple tough shots down the stretch, but our guys really showed a lot of heart and a lot of toughness to get the W. “A win is a win. No matter how hard or how ugly it is, it feels good to get one on the road in conference.” The victory lifted Central’s record to 6-0 in the West Suburban Silver conference. The Red Devils are still leading the Silver in their quest for a third straight conference title. The next night, the Red Devils topped St. Joseph 72-69 behind a career-high 30 points from Kiernan. Central improved to 17-2 on the season. Bradshaw scored 15 and Peter Blust had 10.

Area teams find new stars to shine on the court By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com New players emerge as standouts each basketball season, from underclassmen getting their first taste of varsity ball to juniors and seniors making the most of increased playing time. Here is a list of some of the most impressive newcomers and improved returners for Downers Grove South, Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South:

Kiera James

Class: Senior Position: Guard Impact: Katich has taken on a larger role for the Red Devils this season as the team’s point guard and ranks third on the team with a 6.5 points per game average and is nearly automatic at the free-throw line, according to head coach Tom McKenna. “Her improvement has been phenomenal,” McKenna said. “She provides offensive production, and it’s nice to have that scoring ability. Whatever we ask her to work on, she works on.”

School: Downers Grove South Class: Sophomore Gennifer Simpson Position: Forward School: Hinsdale South Impact: Downers Grove South head Class: Senior coach Lyndsie Long does not mince Position: Guard words when speaking about Kiera Impact: First-year head coach Brett James. “[She is a] very special athletic talent that doesn’t come around often,” Long said. Although athleticism doesn’t always translate to the court, James has greatly improved her overall game this season and is the Mustangs third-leading scorer with 8.7 points per game and is the team leader in rebounds, averaging more than 9.5 boards per game.

Payton Katich School: Hinsdale Central

ABOVE: Hinsdale South’s Gennifer Simpson maneuvers past Downers Grove North’s Nicole Salernos on Jan. 16. Simpson is the Hornets’ second-leading scorer this season.

Love has Hinsdale South playing a little different style of offense from years past, and Simpson is the one guiding that offense. In addition to being a facilitator for her teammates, she also is a scoring threat and is second on the team with a 9.8 points per game average. “For us, she can spot up and shoot, handle the ball a little bit,” Love said. “More often than not she’s taking the shots we need her to take and knocking them down.”

Red Devils’ Rush races to school scoring record By MATT LE CREN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com HINSDALE – When Toni Kokenis graduated from Hinsdale Central in 2010 as the school’s career scoring leader, many people thought her record of 2,031 points would stand for a long time. They were wrong. Gabrielle Rush surpassed the mark Jan. 19 when she made two free throws against Rockford Boylan. The Princeton recruit, who now has 2,129 points, set the record in just 98 games, while Kokenis played 128 games. “It’s just so crazy,” Rush said. “Growing up I would go to all the summer camps with Toni Kokenis being the coach. She had that status that was just so cool. “[Former Central star] Morgan Kasperek was an [assistant] coach here for a while so I always aspired to be somebody that could play at an Iowa or Stanford like they did. I think it’s so cool to even be consid-

Both are bright students and humble stars who bring a lot to the program. “She’s a special player and a great kid,” Hinsdale Central coach Tom McKenna said. “We’re pretty young outside of her and she’s been a great leader for the young kids. “That sounds like a cliché out of a movie, but she’s the real deal.” Rush, a four-year starter, leads the 16-5 Red Devils in scoring (25.2 points per game), rebounds (12.0 per game)

and assists (4.0). For her career, she is averaging 20.9 points per game. This is the fifth consecutive season a Rush has led the Red Devils in scoring. Her sister, Christine, did so in 201011 and is finishing her college career at Brown this winter. Rush is the fourth of five basketball-playing siblings. Sister Danielle, 25, and brother Nick, 23, played at Nazareth while another brother, Matthew, is in eighth grade. While Rush expects her scoring record will be broken sooner rather than later, McKenna doesn’t think he’ll be around to see it. “She’s a once-in-a-lifetime player,” McKenna said. “I don’t ever expect to be lucky enough to have someone like that again. “[The Rush sisters] are wonderful kids. My wife always says they’re so poised it’s unbelievable. [When Gabrielle] broke the record it gave me goose bumps because I know how important Kokenis was to this program.”

By JASON ROSSI DARIEN – Juwan Edmond spoke about his match against Hinsdale South’s Ernest Inglam as if it was a drag-out affair. Actually, the Hinsdale Central senior won by fall just 1:05 into the match at 152 pounds as the Red Devils defeated the Hornets 55-21. “I had never wrestled him before, so I took a couple not-too-intelligent shots,” Edmond said. “I was trying to test his strengths a little bit and then I started to work my offense a lot better toward the end of the match.” Edmond’s showing in one of his final matches before the postseason

Bill Ackerman backerman@shawmedia.com

(Central had dual meets scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday) indicated he is on the right path as he sets his sights on his first state title. “I’m feeling good,” Edmond said. “My offense is coming along well and I have very few injuries. Right now, I’m as healthy as I can be at this point.”

Edmond’s was among several big victories for the Red Devils on Tuesday. Matt Price (120 pounds), Liam Drury (126), Peter Pigatti (170), Josh Del Rosario Rivera (182) and Matt Allen (285) all won by fall. Price and Allen needed just more than a minute to earn their pins, and James Manikas (138) and

Luke Letizia won with technical falls. The Hornets enjoyed decisive wins in their four match victories. Robby Regan (195) and Josh King (220) pinned their opponents, Danish Qureshi (120) won by technical fall and Nick Carlson (145) had a 10-0 major decision. The Hornets are on hiatus until the Morton regional tournament Feb. 7, but those four wins are a confidence boost for some of South’s best wrestlers. “Nick Carlson is wrestling well right now,” South head coach Kevin Formanski said. “He has been all year, but he’s looking to start peaking heading to the postseason. Same with Robby at 195 and Josh at 220, and Danish is coming around good, too.”
