Oak Street Bridge Project on track By MATTHEW HENDRICKSON mhendrickson@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Board of Trustees approved several ordinances at their Tuesday night meeting related to the village’s Oak Street Bridge Project. Trustees unanimously approved an ordinance that would allow the village to spend up to $1.15 million to purchase land in area around the project. Village President Thomas K. Cauley Jr. told trustees the village has already negotiated with several land owners in the area and was still in negotiations with Hinsdale Hospital as of Tuesday night.
Trustees also unanimously approved an agreement with Illinois Department of Transportation, which IDOT also will have to approve, to not exceed spending a total of $10,125,000 on the project. A contract, which also will have be to approved by IDOT, was unanimously approved by trustees to hire HR Green Inc. for the bridge replacement project not to exceed $928,412.65, which will be paid for with grant money issued to the village. President Cauley said the board was approving the items after a first discussion of them to keep the project on track.
“The last thing I want to do is have this board be the body that slows down this project,” Cauley said of the expedited approval of the ordinances. “If we have to do something quickly, we’ll do it quickly.” The village must have the land negotiations completed by Jan. 16, according to Cauley, to meet the state’s deadline and keep the project on track. Failure to do so, he said, would delay the project at least a month. The Oak Street Bridge Replacement Project seeks to alleviate traffic congestion and to replace the current Oak Street Bridge, parts of which are more than 100 years old.

However, it could be a while before 70 mph speed limit signs start popping up along Interstates 88, 294 or 355. The tollway authority still needs to conduct traffic studies to determine if a speed limit increase is warranted. Then it would require approval from the tollway’s board of directors, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Joint Commission on Administrative Rules before taking effect.

Park District gets $400K state grant By MATTHEW HENDRICKSON mhendrickson@shawmedia.com OAK BROOK – The Oak Brook Park District was awarded $400,000 by the state of Illinois for a renovation of Central Park, Gov. Pat Quinn announced Jan. 3. The funds will be used to renovate Oak Brook’s largest park in the district, Central Park, located along Route 83 at 1500 Forest Gate Road. Laure Kosey, executive director of the Oak Brook Park District, said they were thrilled be a recipient of an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development program grant. The grant will fund 75 park projects across the state of Illinois at a total amount of $26 million. Kosey said the Oak Brook Park District will contribute $600,000 toward the renovation of Central Park as well. Planned work includes renovating the ball fields, adding fitness equipment throughout the park, a renovation of the park’s existing walking paths and adding a new creative play area for children. Since the grant was just recently awarded, Kosey said all plans for the project haven’t been finalized. Work on the project won’t begin until May 1 at the earliest, Kosey said. The Park District plans to wait until after the little league season has ended before starting work on the ball fields.

Wage hike will hurt those it’s meant to help SPRINGFIELD – Many years ago, I was a minimum-wage worker making $3.35 an hour writing obituaries for the Galesburg Register-Mail. More than a few times during that college summer break I had an editor holler at me, “There is no ‘a’ in cemetery!” But I learned how to meet deadlines, deal with the public and spell a bit better. Most people I know have had similar first-job expeVIEWS riences. They didn’t earn a Scott whole lot, but they learned Reeder enough to help them get a better job down the road. We could spend a lot of time bemoaning the loss of low-paying positions to innovation or we can simply accept that businesses will seek the most cost-effective solutions. That’s why talk of raising the state’s minimum wage is troubling. While it will result in pay raises for some lucky individuals, it will result in fewer jobs for the state’s low-skill workers. As the cost of labor goes up, the demand will go down. When I mentioned this economic principle to a friend, he asked, “Then, who will do the work if positions are eliminated?” Look no further than McDonald’s for the answer. According to a recent Malcolm Berko column, the fast-food chain anticipates adding touch screens in 2,000 of its 15,000 restaurants in 2015. Customers, rather than employees, will be the ones pecking away at the touch screens and sending their orders directly to the kitchen. According to the Berko analysis, this will result in the elimination of four to six employees per location, reducing labor costs by $110,000 per location. Many of these fast food workers who would see their jobs eliminated earn the minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage will accelerate the loss of these and other jobs. Most folks earning minimum wage are either younger than 25 or working part time, a 2012 study conducted by the Cato Institute found. This runs contrary to the narrative of Gov. Pat Quinn and others. In November 2014, Quinn said, “Our minimum wage is $8.25. It is not enough for a mom, a dad or anyone to raise a family on.” He’ll get no argument from me on that. But the Cato study found less than 5 percent of those earning minimum wage are heads of households. So raising the minimum wage will do little to help those trying to raise families and will do much to hurt young people trying to enter the workforce. And, in this economy, that’s the last thing we want to do.

If you thought the comparatively mild weather this winter through Christmas and New Year’s meant that we were going to get off lightly this year, then you were sadly mistaken. It might not be quite as bad as the polar vortex conditions we saw last winter for weeks on end, but this week’s snow and single-digit temperatures are a reminder that in this part of the world, a harsh winter is inevitable. Maybe next week will be nicer. If you’ve been curious what birding is all about, the DuPage Birding Club has an event coming up in Oak Brook that should pique your interest. An event for new birders is scheduled for 8 a.m. Jan. 24 at York Woods Forest Preserve. For information, you can reach out to the event’s leader, Lesa Hipes, at 630-689-7463 or lesahipes@gmail.com.
Write to us We want to hear from you. Letters must be no more than 300 words. They must include your first and last name, town and a phone number for verification. We may edit them for clarity, accuracy and style. Email letters to letters@mysuburbanlife.com. The deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday for the following week’s paper.

Downers Grove should consider village complex There has been a lot of talk about spending $52 million dollars on a new village complex to include the village hall, police department and fleet maintenance. If residents do not feel it is appropriate to spend this amount of money, why doesn’t Downers Grove consider using an existing building that would only need interior work? Using an existing building should cut down dramatically on the final cost. There is an unoccupied Dominick’s store on 63rd Street, which should have ample space to meet the needs of Downers Grove. There is also ample parking. If that amount of parking is not needed, then perhaps a fleet building could be built in the parking lot area. Downers Grove could sell the existing village hall and use the proceeds toward the new facility.

Glen Ellyn Park District should reduce taxes I am disappointed that after news releases about how [the] Glen Ellyn Park District has stockpiled money, that we don’t reap the reward in [the] form of a tax reduction. If the board members bothered to look up on their master plans and surveys, COD and the village of Glen Ellyn have implemented no tax increase recently. The community has supported GEPD’s expansions for a decade. It’s time for a breather.

Although private four-year colleges are noting their very minimal tuition hikes this year, they have a history of disregarding the inflation rate in many years by large percents. Yet, students are burdened with loans that will last a lifetime, and at the same time, find it hard to find decent-paying jobs. Why not “get even” by spending the first two years at a high quality community college like the College of DuPage? Then, transfer as a junior, which becomes quite easy for most four-year colleges. You’ll end up with as good an education, less student loans and probably save at least $50,000 to $200,000 in the process.

Hinsdale Central’s Matt Rafferty goes up for a basket Dec. 22, 2014, in a game against Proviso East at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament. The Red Devils are riding a four-game winning streak into tonight’s game against Lyons Township.
Central boys basketball excited for clash vs. LT By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – George Kiernan had no second thoughts when he got his hands on the ball. Hinsdale Central’s 6-foot-6 forward took a pass from Jordan Bradshaw, went strong to the hoop and converted a three-point play that all but sealed the Red Devils 44-38 win against St. Viator on Tuesday. “I knew I was going to be able to go up and I was able to finish through the contact, and I think that was kind of the dagger that was able to put them away,” Kiernan said of his layup and free throw with 19 seconds left in the game, which came on the heels of Grant Hutcherson’s go-ahead jumper.

It wasn’t always pretty against St. Viator – there were 10 lead changes and six ties in the game, and the final score represented the largest lead of the game for either team – but the win was the fourth straight
for the Red Devils (11-2) and sends them into today’s rivalry game against Lyons Township with a bit of momentum. Both teams come into the contest with matching 3-0 records in the West Suburban Silver, and the winner will gain the inside track on the road to a conference title. Hinsdale Central athletic teams don’t need any extra incentive when playing against Lyons Township, but the Red Devils have it anyway. “I think emotionally and definitely on a pride level, this is the biggest game we’re going to have this season, so we’re definitely excited,” Kiernan said. Last season, the Red Devils won a pair of tight games against the Lions (48-45 and 6357) on their way to repeating
as WSS champions. As always, they expect a battle and a game that could go down to the wire. “They’re good, very good,” Central head coach Nick Latorre said. “They have a good point guard [Harrison Niego], they shoot the ball well, they play extremely hard, they mix their defenses and they have a really good 6-foot-8 young player [sophomore Connor Niego], so they’re just good. “They do a lot of things well. They’re very well coached, so they pose quite a few challenges.” In Connor Niego and 6-4 guard/forward Jaquan Phipps, LT has the size to match up well with Central’s duo of Kiernan and 6-8 Matt Rafferty, who both scored nine points against St. Viator to back up Jordan Bradshaw’s game-high 19 points.
Phipps and Harrison Niego both made the all-tournament team at the York Jack Tosh Holiday classic recently, so Central knows it will need a top-notch defensive effort to earn the win. “We’re really going to bear down and focus on what they like to run and really focus on our defense because I think that’s what was exposed [against St. Viator],” Kiernan said. “We’re definitely going to be on top of our game, because if you can’t get excited for a game against LT, you’re not human. “I’m excited. It’s my senior year and we’re playing them at home for the last time. It’s just going to be an electric atmosphere. We can’t wait until [tonight], but we know we have to work and polish up our defense before we get to battle them.”

1. Hinsdale Central girls basketball Despite suffering a loss against Downers Grove North in the first game of West Suburban Silver play in December, the Red Devils are still in the WSS title hunt and can get into the thick of the race with a home win against Lyons Township at 6 p.m. today. With Gabrielle Rush leading the way, the Central has one of the most prolific offensive threats in all of the conference, and the team will look to continue the kind of play that netted it the title at Wheaton North’s holiday tournament.
