By KRISTIN PEDICINI kpedicini@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Just more than four years after the Hinsdale Fire Department said goodbye to Mark “Big” Johnson, a department firefighter and lieutenant have joined together to find a way to Mark keep his memo- Johnson ry alive. In September 2010, Deputy Chief Johnson was found unresponsive in the basement of the firehouse after suffering a heart attack during mandatory workout hours, according to firefighter Steve Tullis. Tullis – one of the firefighters who found Johnson – said he has always looked back on that day and wished he and his fellow firefighters could have done something more. Teaming up with his lieutenant, Mike Neville, Tullis said the pair have found a way to ensure others are prepared for similar situations by beginning a business which offers CPR certification, as well as training on an automated external defibrillator and first

aid training, called “Mark.” “It’s a very simple life skill that anyone can learn,” Tullis said of the programs. Tullis and Neville will offer two separate courses, each running between three and four hours, according to Tullis. One option for those interested in learning lifesaving techniques is the HeartSaver AED class, which is ideal for the “everyday person.” Through the American Heart Association, the class will offer CPR and AED certification or recertification. Participants in the class will learn to correctly administer CPR and to use a defibrillator, which are now common at many workplaces and schools. Defibrillators delivers a small electrical charge to the heart to restart the heart and are easy for most people to use.

In addition to teaching people lifesaving skills, keeping Johnson’s memory alive is a big part of the goal of the courses. Tullis explained that every firefighter has a call number to use over their radio. Johnson’s number was 1002, and through the program, Tullis is hoping to certify at least 1,002 people. “We’re not looking to make millions, we just want to certify 1,002 people,” Tullis said. In each class, Tullis said he and Neville will share their experience and stories about Deputy Chief Johnson’s life. Incorporating Johnson into the business “just feels right,” according to Tullis. “[Deputy Chief Johnson] was big on life, and he was quick to help people and was generous with his time,” Tullis said. Tullis said Johnson’s story is a powerful one. He hopes to prepare people to act when a similar situation arises. You never know what could happen at any moment, he said. “Unfortunately, we learned from that experience,” Tullis said. “My message is really, you need to be prepared because this is going to happen at some point in your life.”

The second class option will be CPR for Healthcare Professionals. This course, also through the Ameri can Heart Association, is designed for anyone in the health care industry seeking certification or recertification. The course will be geared toward health care professionals. Participants in the programs will receive certification cards, which are good for two years, according to Tullis. Classes will be on site for each group, meaning the business can travel to homes, offices, schools or anywhere people want to learn. Classes also will be available for both small and large, from 5 to 50 people. The cost to take the courses depends on the number of people in the group and will be determined on a case-by-case basis. A portion of the proceeds will be put toward a scholarship fund – set up by Johnson’s wife and son – for children of Hinsdale firefighters, according to Tullis. “It just made total sense to include Mark,” Tullis said. “We don’t ever want anyone to forget him. This will keep his memory alive and fund the scholarship.”

Oak Brook co-workers receive $1M Illinois Lottery check By KRISTIN PEDICINI kpedicini@shawmedia.com OAK BROOK – Cheers for Richard Lewis rang through the Elmhurst Minuteman Shell gas station Wednesday afternoon as 42 co-workers celebrated their winning of a $1 million Mega Millions Illinois Lottery prize. The group – the self proclaimed “42 MEGAwatts” – work together at ComEd’s Oak Brook office and were presented with the check by Harold Mays, chief of Operations and Technology with the Illinois Lottery. Each of the winners will receive about $18,000, according to one of the group administrators, Tina Regalado. “We always said we were going to win big one day,” Regalado said. Regalado said she cried and laughed when she found out about the winnings. Richard Lewis was the coworker who bought the ticket, but he was unable to be at Wednesday’s celebration because of work. Lewis passed

Jordan brought the tickets to the gas station to check if any had won. She received a “file a claim” notification on the machine, which happens with any winning amount
higher than $600, she said. “[The clerk] ran it through and looked at me and he’s standing there staring at me and I’m staring back at him,” Jordan said. “And he said ‘you won a boat load of money ... maybe a ship load.’” Jordan and her co-workers
– the majority of whom were from the company’s billing department – have been playing the lottery for about six years together, sometimes playing Powerball, MegaMillions or other lottery games. “We started collecting $2 a week and then $4 a week when
it got really high,” Regalado said. “We would just split it and play a little on the Powerball and a little on the Mega.” Just last week the group won $103. Collectively, the group of co-workers all said they planned to continue to play the lottery. They even bought a ticket Wednesday morning, which won $5. During the celebration, group members shouted out plans for their winnings, which ranged from trips to new cars to paying the bills to refurnishing homes. One member, Jackie Evans, said she’s giving her winnings to her two daughters in college. Another member, Haydee Talley, said at this point, she doesn’t know how her prize money will be spent. “I haven’t decided yet,” Talley said. “I’m just waiting for the money to hit my hands.” Along with the 42 winners, the gas station also was presented with a check for $10,000 – a 1 percent prize amount for selling the ticket.

Darien police report 4 burglaries Monday By MATTHEW HENDRICKSON mhendrickson@shawmedia.com

DARIEN – The Darien Police Department said a number of residential burglaries reported fit a pattern of residential burglaries in the city in recent months. On Monday, four homes in Darien were reported burglarized. They were located in the 1300 block of Chapman Court, 2200 block of Dunmore Drive, 1500 block of Old Oak Place and 2300 block of Oakmont Way, according to police. Darien Police Chief Ernest Brown said the department was investigating Monday’s burglaries as part of a larger pattern the department has seen. The police department will address the recent burglaries at two community meetings. The first meeting will be at 10 a.m. today at the police department, 1710 Plainfield Road. The second will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Carriage

In October, the Darien Police Department released a community alert to residents warning them of a string of seven attempted or successful burglaries in Darien since Sept. 1. The burglaries fit a pattern because of a number of common aspects. Brown declined to provide additional details but said most of the burglaries were occurring during the daytime hours between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and when residents were not home – sometimes only for short periods of time. In the majority of cases, the homes were entered by force through

Hinsdale Central players celebrate their 1-0 win in the Class 3A boys state soccer championship game against Normal.
Champions. That word will always be linked to the members of the 2014 Hinsdale Central boys soccer team. Will McGowen scored the goal against previously undefeated Normal that gave the Red Devils the state championship, their first since 1975 – long before any of these players were born – but the entire team contributed to this amazing accomplishment. They’ve made a lot of great memories and their hometown proud. Way to go! Sticking with a sports theme, here’s to great seasons from the Hinsdale South and Hinsdale Central football squads. While their quests for a championship may have ended earlier than they’d hoped, both teams accomplished a lot in their runs to the playoffs. The squads combined for 17 victories, against just six losses. That’s a season to remember, no matter how it ended.

As the seasons are changing and fall colors bring to mind the traditional Thanksgiving holiday, I have many fond memories of Thanksgiving holidays of the past, and I look forward to spending this Thanksgiving with my family. What I learned from my parents and grandparents at COMMUNITY Thanksgiving through the VOICE years I am passing on to my John W. children and grandchildren. Love each other; charity Valle begins at home; count your blessings; be thankful for what you have; be generous to those less fortunate than yourself. At York Township, we are thankful for the individuals, corporations and organizations who so generously support York Township programs and services with their cash and in-kind donations. One of our generous supporters and a very worthy cause in its own right is the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, which I participate in every Thanksgiving morning. I urge all of you to find it in your heart to participate in some way in the 31st annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot Nov. 27. On-site registration the day of the race is $35. You can save $5 by registering at dangibbonsturkeytrot.com. Donations are always graciously accepted and go to benefit all the causes of the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, including the York Township Food Pantry among others. I also am thankful for our York Township employees and volunteers who donate their time and efforts at this time of the year to make York Township Senior Center, Food Pantry and General Assistance Holiday Programs possible. With their help, we will distribute to our pantry clients 120 turkey dinners this year for Thanksgiving, compliments of Lombard Juniors and Friends of York Township. This also is the time of year we gear up for our York Township Adopt A Family for Christmas and Toys for Tots programs through which we helped 283 families with 541 children last year. These families received gifts and toys all donated by local organizations, churches, schools, businesses and families. If you would like to make a donation to help provide food for a York Township family on Thanksgiving or contribute to one of our holiday programs, visit York Township Hall at 1502 S. Meyers Road or call us at 630-620-2400 to find out how you can help.

Indian Chinese cuisine goes back over 100 years when people of Chinese origin moved to India across the North East Border and settled in Calcutta. Most of these immigrants were of Hakka ancestry. Over the years they adapted the Chinese cuisine for the locale Indian seasoning and cooking techniques. This is how Indian Chinese fusion began.

sliding glass rear doors. Many of the homes targeted were corner homes, police said. Additionally, the majority of the burglaries or attempted burglaries have occurred within an area bordered by Interstate 55, Lemont Road, Cass Avenue and Plainfield Road, Brown said. In the latest four burglaries, Brown called the items stolen from the homes “traditional” and said they tended to be small items that could easily fit inside a pillowcase. Brown said residents can help police by continuing to register their home if they have outdoor security cameras. For the past six months, Darien police have been keeping a running database of homes with outdoor video surveillance, which has 43 residential and commercial properties recorded. Brown said when the police department becomes aware of a burglary in the area they search their database to find out if it might have been caught on video surveillance. If a registered home might have caught the offenders with their system, po-

lice will contact the homeowner and ask to download the footage. “People have been pretty forthcoming,” Brown said of the program. Brown said in recent years more residents have installed video surveillance systems at their homes. “It can be a great deterrent and can lead to quick apprehensions,” Brown said. Brown also wanted to remind resident to lock their homes and to call police if they see anything that seems suspicious or out of place. Brown also said residents should be wary of anyone who comes to the door and asks for someone who does not live there. Burglars, he said, often check to see if people are home first by knocking on doors and then making up an excuse if someone answers the door. Anyone with information, or to report suspicious activity should call 911. To register a video surveillance system with police, contact Stacy Sherman at 630-3538145 or ssherman@darienil.gov. Residents will be asked for their first and last name, address, phone number and the direction and location of their cameras.

Laurel BMW of Westmont donates new Pinewood Derby track for Hinsdale Scouts By AMANDA FRAZER msleditorial@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – As six boys in first through fifth grade hold their breath, a crowd of family, friends and spectators cheer on their speeding cars until a winner and his finish time appears on a screen, all amid a showroom of BMWs. This will be the scene inside Laurel BMW of Westmont in February as Hinsdale Cub Scout Pack 10 plans to hosts its next Pinewood Derby inside the Westmont dealership and race their cars on a new track recently donated by the dealership. “This is exciting stuff,” Pack 10 Cub Master Robert Rocque said. “This new track should last 30, 40 or 50 years, and to be hosting [the derby] in a place with a nice, premium brand associated with racing takes it to a whole new level.” The Pinewood Derby is an event in which Cub Scouts partner with a parent or adult mentor to design, carve, paint, weigh, refine and race a car beginning with a block of
• RESIDENTIAL Continued from page 9 The burglaries Sunday occurred in the 500 block of North Clay Street and the 500 block of North Grant Street. In the burglary on Grant Street, someone broke a window to gain access to the home. Jewelry was reported stolen from the home’s master bedroom. In the burglary on Clay Street, homeowners were unable to locate their passports following the burglary. Police believe the attempted burglary occurred between 2 p.m. Sunday and 8:13 p.m. Monday, also in the 500 block of Clay Street. The attempted burglary was reported to police Monday, according to police reports. Officers found pry marks on the home’s front door during a canvas of the neighborhood.
wood, according to www.pinewoodderby.org. Rocque said cars can reach speeds of up to 20 mph, which is the equivalent to a normal-sized vehicle reaching more than 200 mph. Pack 10’s new track is aluminum, raised off the floor, and includes six lanes, a remote control starter, a finish line that clocks times to one-thousandth of a second, and an approximately 4-footlong stopping area, Rocque said. It also includes software that can display the boys’ pictures, participating cars, finish times and instant replays on a screen. Although the track is new, the Scouts will still construct derby cars in the same manner. Rocque said the pack’s previous Pinewood Derby track was about 20 years old and sometimes did not work. It also was made of wood, was 50 percent shorter than the new track and had only three lanes. With a pack consisting of more than 50 boys from four area schools, it will be advantageous for enabling more boys race at one time, Rocque said. Police found no sign that anyone entered the home and nothing was reported missing. According to Deputy Chief Kevin Simpson, the Hinsdale Police Department is working closely with other area police departments to see if the burglaries could be related to others in Darien and Burr Ridge. “All of the towns work closely on [burglary reports],” Simpson said. Hinsdale police investigators also are reviewing past burglaries to see if a pattern develops. As in Darien, Hinsdale police are asking residents with outdoor video surveillance systems to register their camera with the police department. Those neighbors who live in the area of the burglaries with video surveillance systems are asked to call police at 630-789-7070.
“The boys can work on their cars from a few hours to a few weeks, so for them to be able to see their car run on a new track, since there are more lanes and it’s longer, is more exciting,” Rocque said. “The kids put in a lot of work on the cars, especially for their age.” He also feels the new track will bring more attention to Scouting. “Being the Cub Master, I’m the gentleman that recruits boys, and having the larger track and association with BMW gets more boys into Scouting,” Rocque said. “They get excited and it’s kind of like rock star stuff. This was the objective.” Rocque said he discussed the current state of Pack 10’s track with Pat Womack, general manager of Laurel BMW of Westmont, who also was a Cub Scout and participated in Pinewood Derbies, according to Charlene King of CKCommunications, spokeswoman for the dealership. Womack also is passionate about the car industry and racing. This will be the first Pine-
• POLICE Continued from page 9 and 59th streets. Zymeri was stopped for improper lane use and refused testing to determine his blood-alcohol content. Additionally, Zymeri was found in possession of an open alcohol container in his vehicle. • Justin Johnson, 20, of the 500 block of North County Line Road, Hinsdale, was charged at 4:54 a.m. Nov. 15 with driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, hit-and-run and improper lane use in the zero to 100 block of West Ayres Street. According to police, Johnson crashed into a home in the zero to 100 block of Ayres and then left the scene on foot, walked home and was taken to the hospital by members of his family. Police said DUI charges were pending the final result of lab reports.
wood Derby at the dealership, King said, adding “and it won’t be the last.” The process of building and testing the track will take about 30 to 40 man hours, Rocque said, and the Scouts are about halfway finished with its construction. When the day of the derby nears, the track will be disassembled in sections and reassembled in the dealership showroom, Rocque said. Scouts from Boy Scout Troops 8 and 10 of Hinsdale will assist as race officials at the derby, which is unique since Pinewood Derbies do not take place at the Boy Scout level, Rocque said. Each Scout will participate in the derby race in heats for speed and for overall original design. “Any Scout that builds a car participates,” Rocque said. “The key hallmark of Scouting is all about having fun with parents and family, and the family interaction when building and racing creates team building, leadership and the ability to solve problems together.”
Internet crime • Someone targeted a village computer in a cyberattack and encrypted files on the computer and demanded money to unencrypt the files at 8 a.m. Oct. 30 at the Hinsdale Department of Public Works, 225 Symonds Drive. The incident was reported to police Nov. 14. • A person reported fraudulent activity after being contacted by someone claiming to be an investment broker at 5:29 p.m. Oct. 24 in the 500 block of Justina Street. The incident was reported to police Nov. 13.
Theft A resident reported the theft of services at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 15 in the 900 block of Taft Road after they gave a $3,000 advance to a nanny, who later provided no services and did not return the resident’s calls. Police are investigating.

T
he holiday season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season. • Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone. • In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn’t born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible. • Christmas carols began as an English custom called “wassailing.” Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life.

• Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifically calls out a number. Similarly, there’s no specific indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older. • Santa Claus’ modern look was inspired by writings from The Knickerbockers of New York and imagery from Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Moore denied authoring the famous poem for 15 years after it was published anonymously, feeling the poem was beneath his talents. • Santa has his own official postal code. It’s H0 H0 H0. • The song “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiving and not Christmas. People loved it so much that the lyrics were changed to fit Christmas. • Christmas trees typically grow for 15 years before they’re cut and sold. This means the trees sold today were likely planted in 1999. • Christmas was not declared an official holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870. • Before turkey, the traditional Christmas meal served in England was a pig’s head and mustard. • Male reindeer tend to shed their antlers in the winter. This means Santa’s reindeer are likely female. • Christ may have been born in a cave rather than a manger. According to the gospel of Luke, the shepherds that helped find shelter for Mary to give birth kept their flock in a cave. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born. • Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what “mistletoe” means in the ancient Germanic language. It literally means “dung on a twig,” for the bird who eats the berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants.

• Each holiday season, PNC Wealth Management calculates the costs of the gifts in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The price index for the gifts went from $12,673 in 1984 to more than $24,000 in 2011. The most expensive gift is the swimming swans.

“A Coyote Who Wished He Lived in a Zoo” is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble stores and at www. annagrob.weebly.com.
about it ... and it feels good to start connecting.” It was her interactions with zoo guests that had her fellow docents encouraging her to write a book. The only problem? She’d never written one before. As a part-time librarian at the Indian Prairie Public Library in Darien, she had plenty on inspiration. “I never thought I could write a book,” Grob chuckled. She said she always had stuck to photography and painting for her artistic pursuits. But the docents suggested
she target her book toward children and she decided to give it a go. In 2012, Grob released her first children’s book, “A Coyote Who Wished He Lived in a Zoo,” which she wrote and illustrated. The book got picked up by a publisher and was nominated for the Juvenile Literature Award by the Friends of American Writers Chicago. She recently rereleased the book through self-publishing in anticipation of her newest book, which tells the story of an African-painted dog. Grob’s coyote book tells the tale of a lonely and hungry coyote in the suburbs who is tired of scavenging and hunting his food. He has a dream in which he finds a home where people care for him and when he awakes, he discovers the zoo. During the course of an evening, he talks to animals in the zoo’s habitats and ends up at the wolf exhibit. The wolves tell him the zoo has saved their species from extinction by protecting them.
In the end, the coyote is chased away by a night watchman, is hurt by a car and eventually makes his way back to the zoo for care and gets to stay. The book covers a number of themes that are important to Grob, including the role coyotes play in the suburban predator/prey ecosystem and the importance of the role zoos play in the conservation of endangered species and the rehabilitation of sick and injured animals. Grob based the illustrations for the book on those she’s drawn and photographed at the Brookfield Zoo’s exhibits throughout the years. Lessons the coyote learns from the zoo’s animals come from things she’s learned from the Brookfield Zoo’s staff. Through her book, Grob hopes kids will learn an appreciation for the work of zoos. “Seeing [animals] on Animal Planet just doesn’t give the same effect,” Grob said. Being inspired by zoos and visiting them at a young age
is important, Grob said. She hopes that zoo visits and books like hers will inspire kids to want to learn more about animals and conservation. Grob said she specifically selected a coyote to be the book’s protagonist because of the familiarity people in the suburbs have to them, as well as the bad feelings suburban residents can harbor toward them. “It’s a good opportunity to talk about coyotes,” said Grob, who has a special love for canines of all sorts. “They play an important role in the environment by eating rabbits and muskrats and raccoons.” In talks she gives about the book, Grob said she tries to relate a coyote’s suburban experience with that of her audience. “They use these neighborhoods like a McDonald’s,” she said. “It’s an easy, quick meal ... You can’t blame the coyote.” While she looks for a publisher for her next book, Grob also is working on seven others. “I’ve just run with it,” she said.

BROOKFIELD – Anna Grob’s days as a volunteer in Brookfield Zoo’s docent program are spent helping visitors find what they’re looking for amidst the zoo’s plentiful offerings. But it’s when she gets to teach those visitors a thing or two about the animals they are witnessing that she really comes alive. After regularly heading to the zoo several times a week to photograph and draw animals, in 2002 Grob learned about the docent program at the zoo and immediately signed up as a volunteer. “I have a huge love for animals,” Grob said. “I was hooked.” Grob’s passion also extends to teaching, especially children at the zoo. “I enjoy it very much when I see the children’s faces light up when they see an animal they like,” Grob said. “And then you start talking to them

mayo, it added flavor, but the other ingredients cut the heat, leaving just a tasty little kick. My friend’s only regret about her skillet was she couldn’t finish it. The crispy breakfast potatoes with warm soft centers were just too filling. The chilaquiles did not disappoint. We chose to top off the mixture with a pair of scrambled eggs. The light, fluffy eggs paired excellently with the pulled pork and queso fresco. While I liked the red salsa, my
personal taste preference was the tangy salsa verde. The brunch menu, offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, includes sweet dishes such as strawberry cheesecake French toast served with fresh berries, creme anglaise and whipped cream. There’s a full selection of morning cocktails, and our server told us the house Bloody Mary is handmade with the restaurant’s own recipe. Specialty Lavazza coffee drinks also are featured.
We stopped in on a Saturday, but on Sundays, a pianist plays the sleek baby grand tucked in the corner from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, live jazz and other entertainment starts at 7 p.m. The dinner menu entices with charcuterie, crab cakes, steak, and Cajun-inspired shrimp and scallops with andouille, bell pepper and cheese grits, one of many gluten-free choices. BOLINGBROOK – It was a crisp autumn morning when my friend and I walked into Sage Kitchen + Bar in Bolingbrook. The warmth of the restaurant was welcome after the chilly air, and the sun shone through tall windows along the walls of the attractive, contemporary space. We read the menu, debating what we should have for brunch. With some friendly advice from our server, we made our picks. My friend took advantage of the build-your-own skillet option, choosing to top her breakfast potatoes with spinach, cheddar, portobello mushrooms and the crowning touch of a pair of sunny-sideup eggs. Other possible toppings included bacon, bell peppers, goat cheese, red onions, Tasso ham, tomatoes, avocado, andouille, chicken and turkey. Any of these also can be tossed into a custom omelette. I went for the Sage breakfast sandwich, a pretzel flatbread loaded with scrambled eggs, bacon, spicy mayo and avocado. I chose breakfast potatoes on the side, but Parmesan fries are another option. We also had to try the chilaquiles. The bowl of corn tortilla chips tossed with black beans, roasted corn, queso fresco, pulled pork and eggs any style sounded too good to pass up. Our server asked if we’d like salsa verde or red salsa but kindly accommodated our request to have both on the side. As we chatted about our weekend plans, the shops at The Promenade tempted us from just beyond the windows. Our server stopped by to make sure we didn’t need anything else while we waited for our brunch, which fueled us for the rest of the day. My Sage breakfast sandwich tasted delicious. The pretzel flatbread was a favorite part of the meal, lending so much to the bacon and egg classic combo. As for the spicy

Hinsdale Central’s senior goalkeeper came up big in two penalty kick shootouts during the playoffs as the Red Devils went on to win the Class 3A state title. Bergevin and the Red Devils allowed just four goals in seven playoff games to win their first state title since 1975. “It’s something every team wants to do at the beginning of the season,” Bergevin said. “We wanted to be on top and win a state title, and now that it’s happened, it’s awesome. It’s an incredible experience.” The 1-0 shootout wins against Lyons Township [in a sectional semifinal] and Naperville North [in the supersectional] were only the tip of the iceberg. Bergevin, the Suburban Life all-area soccer MVP, also stopped a penalty kick with just seconds remaining in Central’s 3-2 win against Morton in the sectional championship match. He backstopped the Red Devils to four shutout wins in the postseason, including a 1-0 victory against a prolific Normal offense in the state title match, and in the process set a new school record with 26 shutouts. He has become a standout soccer player even though the family business is hockey. His father, Marc Bergevin, was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks, played in 1,191 games in the NHL, was a front-office executive for the Blackhawks during their 2010 Stanley Cup season and is currently General Manager for the Montreal Canadiens. So how did a kid from a well-known hockey family be-

keeper. He was one of just 42 players from across the country invited to the 4th Annual High School All-American Game – to be played Dec. 13 in Raleigh, N.C. – and has earned the praise of opposing coaches. “When you see him on the field you know you have to make [your shot] perfect,” LT head coach Paul Labatto said. “He takes up so much space. His arms are long.” Bergevin, who is still looking for a college destination to continue his career, was a team captain, along with Evan Floersch and Justin Yi, and like any good leader he
deflected praise to his teammates. “Nick [Silva], Evan and Will [McGowen], they were always very well positioned on defense,” Bergevin said. “Having them out in front of me cutting down shots, that’s the best thing a goalkeeper can have is a good defense. They definitely made my job a lot easier.” In and out of the net, Bergevin’s presence will be missed as Central looks to defend its title next year. “Not only is he a great kid,” Wiggins said, “but he’s so coachable, he’s so hardworking and he’s a great leader.”

St. Francis 41, Hinsdale South 14 SOUTH STAT LEADERS n PASSING: Robby Regan: 9-of-21, 81 yards n RUSHING: Marcus Curry: 17-131, TD; Regan: 21-81, TD n RECEIVING: Ravon Johnson: 3-41; Connor McCormack: 2-30; Dylan Boye: 1-5; Jevais Harris: 3-5 n DEFENSE: Jawahn Downing: fumble recovery, interception the game. South (9-3) quickly responded to that score. Jawahn Downing recovered the Spartans’ muffed punt, setting up Regan’s 47-yard scoring run three plays later.
Then the Spartans upped the ante with four touchdown passes in the second quarter, the last two coming in the last 38 seconds of the half following Hinsdale South interceptions, for a 34-7 halftime lead. “They were pretty solid on defense, well-disciplined and they capitalized on our mistakes,” Regan said. “They made the most of their opportunities.” St. Francis scored on all four of its drives in the second quarter and racked up 215 yards of offense in the process. “I thought we moved the ball well early in the game, but any time you start out and they drive the field and score, you don’t like that,” South head coach Mike Barry said. “It’s happened to us before but we’ve been able to respond,
and we just weren’t able to do that today. It wasn’t like there was a breakdown, it was just that their guy made a play over our guy. That happens.” Marcus Curry got loose for a 52-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter, but by then the damage had already been done. “Only one team finishes the way they want to, and that’s with a state championship,” Barry said. “We were on the road to try and accomplish that, and we got derailed early. [St. Francis] made some unbelievable plays. It seemed like if the ball was in the air they were able to come down with it. “They played well as a team, so hats off to St. Francis. We needed to make some more plays to compete today, and we weren’t able to do that.”
