At 3:31 p.m. Nov. 18 in the 11400 block of 75th Street, a caller reported a suspicious person who came to their door and offered to do gardening work. According to police reports, a man wearing a blue jacket knocked on the resident’s door, offered gardening services and then left when the resident declined.

The man then left in a silver or tan BMW with a temporary license plate. A short time later, at 3:48 p.m. in the 11500 block of Burr Oak Lane, a resident reported an attempted burglary to police. The resident told police man wearing a dark blue or black jacket attempted to pry off a patio door window of a home. The caller startled the man, and he ran off into a silver BMW and headed southbound on Burr Oak Lane. Police later found pry marks left on the door from a screwdriver. Police also reported a successful residential burglary in Burr Ridge, which was reported to police at 4:08 p.m. Nov.

Politicians could learn a few things from kids SPRINGFIELD – Recently, I watched my 9-year-old daughter, Gracie, shake hands with her opponents after a tough loss on the basketball court. Basketball is a new thing for her. In fact, it’s the first time she has competed in any sport. Already she has learned one thing: winning is a whole lot more fun than losing. But even after a tough VIEWS loss, we expect her to shake Scott hands or high-five members Reeder of the opposing team and congratulate them. Our hope is basketball won’t just be an experience where she learns how to dribble, shoot and rebound. We also want to her learn how to cope with life’s disappointments, like losing that game you were certain that you were going to win. Politicians could learn something from those 9-year-olds. During the three decades I’ve covered politics, I’ve seen it all. When I was a city hall reporter in the Quad Cities, a drunken mayoral candidate on election night belittled the intelligence of voters for not choosing him. After listening to that performance, I had to say the voters were smarter than he thought. On the other hand, I remember a victorious U.S. Rep. Lane Evans offer consolation to the man he defeated and publicly state he would seek his advice on how to serve. Unfortunately, there are sore losers unable to let the word “congratulations” pass their lips. To put it in the words of Jimmy Carter: “Show me a good loser, and I’ll show you a loser.” He said that after losing a tough primary race to be Georgia governor. Of course, Carter resurrected his political career and later became governor and then president. And let’s not forget Richard Nixon, who infamously said after the losing the race for governor of California, “You don’t have Nixon to kick around anymore.” My point? It doesn’t matter if you are a Republican or a Democrat, losing is the pits. But how you respond to your loss speaks volumes about yourself. When Pat Quinn lost a tough race for governor, he didn’t concede the night of the election. And the next day, he offered no congratulations to his opponent and failed to even say his name. There is no mandate in politics that you have to be a good sport. And civility was largely absent from the gubernatorial campaigns of both Quinn and his opponent, Bruce Rauner. But now the election is over, civility would be a good balm to apply for an electorate weary of mudslinging.

A number of businesses in downtown Hinsdale could stand to benefit if local shoppers spend their money in town this holiday season.

OUR VIEW

Skip Black Friday and shop on Small Business Saturday We often pass up our local merchants in lieu of national chain stores. Maybe it’s the lure of lower prices. But how much are you really saving? And who benefits? Likely, your money is going overseas or into the pockets of billionaire conglomerate owners. Sure, the sales tax you pay stays local, but the rest of your money, and your patronage, go to support a business with little interest in DuPage and Cook counties. This weekend, let’s change all that. It is Small Business Saturday, which comes one day after Black Friday, when deal-hungry shoppers flood chain stores for deals that might only save them a couple bucks. Saturday, let’s spend our money in local stores that believe in our local economy. Some may argue locally owned shops are more expensive. Maybe they are, but likely not by much. The advantage of local shops is that you are buying from your neighbors, who in turn reinvest your money into your community. And they probably have unique items you won’t find in big-box stores. Some

local shops can even personalize gifts or create special orders – something the recipient will appreciate and cherish. In downtown areas like Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills, among other local communities, there are many one-of-a-kind boutique shops; enough to make for an entire day of shopping. You can find clothes, toys, housewares and furniture from smaller vendors with a more carefully selected inventory. And don’t forget about the local restaurants, manned by local residents with a passion for cooking. Our local shop owners work hard to provide excellent customer service and a personalized shopping experience. So don’t spend your entire holiday gift budget Friday. Make a shopping day out of Saturday. Invite your friends and family and explore the local stores. Treat yourself to a nice lunch at a local café or diner. Remember, your money will be supporting your neighbors and your local economy, which is quite a gift in and of itself.

I just wanted to reiterate on what someone said about West Avenue and the traffic that happens there. As a resident of Berkley Avenue by St. Charles Road and York High School, we experience the same thing – people drive back and forth really fast at rush hour traffic. People need to remember that it’s a residential area. It has to be addressed and the police have done nothing about it.

I’d like to sound off for my thankfulness. I’m thankful for all the parents and students who make sacrifices to send their children to college to be doctors, engineers, scientists – everything that makes our lives easier today, especially our health. I’m thankful for the wheel – don’t know who invented it, but where would we be without it? I’m thankful for indoor plumbing and drinkable clean water. I’m thankful for air conditioning and heating. For friends and family. For people who rescue animals. I can’t imagine the person I would be without my dog, who makes me a whole human being. Thank you to all the honest people out in the world and the guardians who look after us. Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving.

LETTERS and eligible to vote. In his “Letter to Parents and Guardians” of Sept. 24, board President Richard Skoda recommended the teachers’ strike as “an adventure in community teamwork.” Parents could safely send their kids to school, he wrote, because there was a “contingency plan” to maintain programs using “qualified substitute teachers.” On Oct. 6, parent after parent demanded to see his “contingency plan,” with stonewalling by the board majority. Finally, Dr. Law courageously admitted “there is no contingency plan.” Despite aggressive recruitment and lowered standards, an adequate number of substitutes could not be found. From that moment, even the board majority could see returning to negotiation was the only way forward.

Here is a tall tale making the rounds about our narrow escape from a teachers strike in Hinsdale High School District 86: “Non-taxpaying union organizers” packed board meetings and “intimidated the board” into appointing new negotiators on Oct. 6 and approving a compromise two-year contract on Oct. 20. To learn the truth, watch the videos, especially from [the meeting] Oct. 6, when the board majority rush to force a teachers strike was stopped, in a breathtaking moment that has yet to be recognized as it deserves to be. Yes, the meeting was packed, but with community members, including hundreds of District 86 parents. At Audience Communication, scores of residents implored the board majority to accept the teachers compromise offer. There was nothing “intimidating” about the speakers, unless you have good

Nominated by Scott Forcash, Guidance Counselor: “Tyler was one of the most talented and thoughtful writers I have had the privilege to teach. I always looked forward to reading his work because I knew that it would be stylistically creative with insightful connections. I was able to use his work as models for others. Tyler is such a responsive student; for example, as students and I were sharing thoughts in class, I would always see Tyler completely engaged and providing verbal and nonverbal feedback. He is simply an incredibly positive presence and role model for those around him. He was a leader in small group setting, encouraging and supporting his peers… Tyler’s resume truly speaks for itself; however, I cannot stress enough that his exceptional character and humble demeanor are what make Tyler one of the top students of my career. Even though he is now a senior, he makes a point to pop into my classroom to see how my day is going. These simple, kind acts are what make Tyler outstanding in addition to his incredible intelligence.” - Ms. Terri Woebel, English Teacher

GIRLS BASKETBALL PREVIEW

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The girls basketball season has tipped off with many teams playing in tournaments to start the campaign. Here’s the outlook for Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South this season.

Outlook: Princeton-bound Gabrielle Rush can light up the scoreboard. Tom McKenna has called her the best player he has ever coached, and she is coming off a season in which she averaged 20.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. The big question mark is how the Red Devils will fare after graduating five seniors, including Jenna Broz, Abby Gurka, Madeleine Roglich and Emily Wasz, who were all key contributors last year. But the Red Devils won’t just be the Rush show. Payton Katich started all of last season and Gilley Martinelli ascended to a starting role late last year. Both will be key pieces this season. Paige Bareck, Riley Burr and Grace Hartzman are key underclassmen. Bareck and Burr started the season opener against Hinsdale South, and Hartzman scored six points off the bench in a 50-42 loss against Hinsdale South. McKenna has already seen the

Love billed himself as a defensive coach who likes to move the ball up the floor quickly on offense. He has the Hornets thinking big this season. “I’m a big goal-setter,” Love said. “I want to get to state, but first it’s the regionals and sectionals. I’d love to see us get through the regional to the sectional and see what happens.”

She trailed Liva by 35.55 points after Friday’s preliminaries. “Today I knew that I had pretty easy dives and I was confident with my last three dives,” McCarthy said. “I got into the zone and said, ‘I got this, all I have to do is smile and have fun.’ I know what to do, my body knows what to do. I just have to go out and have fun, and I did.” Graham won two medals in her state meet debut. The rookie was fourth in the breaststroke in Friday’s preliminaries with a 1:04.03. Competing against three seniors in the championship heat, she wound up fifth with a 1:04.79 clocking. “It’s definitely not something I expected, but to be here has been really awesome and just a lot of exciting things,” Graham said. “It definitely gives me a lot more confidence for next year and years to come.”

One Hinsdale Central phenom competed in her final high school state swimming meet Saturday at Evanston while another appeared in her first. Both walked away with medals. Senior Margy McCarthy capped her illustrious career by earning her third consecutive state medal in diving, racking up 426.15 points to capture third place, while freshman Emily Graham took fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke. Only Prospect senior Dana Liva and Naperville Central junior Sydney Dusel, the defending state champion, bested McCarthy. Liva won with 464.50 points, the fourth-highest total in state meet history. “It feels really good,” McCarthy said. “I’m really happy that I [medaled] these past few years. It feels good getting points for the team.” McCarthy, who will dive at Alabama, was fourth as a sophomore and fifth last year. She saved her highest finish, and greatest point total, for her final year. “I just wanted to do my best,” McCarthy said. “I knew this year, particularly, has so many good divers. I knew it was going to be really tight, but I just wanted to go out and

LA GRANGE PARK – Nazareth Academy’s football team is headed to the Class 6A state title game after a convincing semifinal victory Saturday. The top-seeded Roadrunners used a fast start to ultimately trigger the running clock in the third quarter en route to a 56-28 win against St. Francis. Next up is a meeting with fellow undefeated Lemont, set for 1 p.m. Saturday in Champaign. “We wanted this, and we started this since July,” senior quarterback Jonah Beauduy said. “We want to be at state, and we want to win state and finish it.” Nazareth is making its first state appearance in football. “It’s kind of surreal,” senior left tackle Jack Shutack said. “We all talked about it, but now that it’s here, that we’re going to Champaign, it’s a nice feeling.” On their first four drives, the Spartans compiled a pair of three and outs and threw two interceptions, one of which do-everything Nazareth junior Julian Love returned for a 23-yard touchdown. Nazareth (13-0) led, 28-0, after one quarter, capitalizing on its athleticism and fantastic field position. Love
