Each of the 42 ComEd co-workers took home $18,000. One of the group’s administrators, Patty Jordan, took the tickets to the gas station to check if any had won. She received a “file a claim” notification on the machine, which happens with any winning amount more than $600, she said. The co-workers, who have been playing the lottery together for six years, said they all plan to continue playing. Quote of note:“[The clerk] ran it through and looked at me and he’s standing there staring at me and I’m staring back at him. And he said, ‘You won a boatload of money ... maybe a shipload.” Jordan said.
5. Cold impact What happened: Residents still shutter at the mere mention of the “polar vortex.” After nearly 2 feet of snow buried the Hinsdale area in the first week of 2014, temperatures began to plummet. Two waves of extreme cold in January saw high temperatures top out in the negative teens, and wind chills made conditions even more dangerous. Baby BABY, THE CHIHUAHUA/PUG MIX, DREAMS OF A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS Baby is a charming, 4-year old Chihuahua/Pug mix also known as a “Chug”. He weight 10 pounds and is ready to go home. He is a playful, easy-going guy who loves attention. For the past two years, he has lived with a canine companion, Justin, a Chihuahua mix, who is also available for adoption. These two boys get along well and enjoy playing with one another, and although an adoption together would be ideal, each can be adopted separately. Baby (and Justin, too) is used to someone being home more than not, and is suitable for an individual or family with children at least 8 years of age. Happiness is Baby going to a new home to begin the New Year!
If you can give Baby the loving home he deserves, please visit him and the other dogs and cats available for adoption at Hinsdale Humane Society.

HINSDALE – A Hinsdale Central teacher was put on leave Dec. 12 and later resigned following allegations that the teacher had improper communication with a student at the school, according to a letter from District 86 Superintendent Bruce Law. In a letter to parents, Law wrote a student approached a member of the Hinsdale Central High School administration Dec. 12 and reported inappropriate communications between a fellow student and a teacher. The district said it investigated the allegations, and within hours had placed the teacher on leave and escorted him out of the building. According to the letter, the teacher resigned the following school day. The letter also said the administration filed a report Dec. 12 with the Hinsdale Police Department and the Department of Children and Family Services. Both agencies are conducting their own investigations, the letter stated. Deputy Chief Kevin Simp-

Simpson said he did not know if or when further information would be made available to the public. Superintendent Bruce Law was not available for comment. Assistant Superintendent Pam Bylsma said District 86 would not comment further on the incident and directed questions to Hinsdale police.

2 people save woman from oncoming train

mhendrickson@shawmedia.com WESTERN SPRINGS – A Metra train from Chicago headed west struck an unoccupied vehicle on the railroad tracks about 5:17 p.m. Monday evening in Western Springs, according to police reports. When police responded to the scene, they found the unoccupied vehicle about 200 feet east of the Wolf Road grade crossing in the 700 block of Burlington Avenue in Western Springs. Police learned that a man and a woman saw a driver turn from Wolf Road and drive onto the train tracks. The two ran to assist an 80-year-old Glen Ellyn woman inside the vehicle and helped to remove
her from the vehicle as a train approached. Shortly after getting the woman from the vehicle, a Metra train headed west to Aurora struck the driver’s side door of the vehicle, which was left open. Western Springs police said they believed the woman was traveling south on Wolf Road and misjudged a left turn and ended up turning onto the railroad tracks by mistake. The driver – and the two bystanders who assisted her from the vehicle – were not injured in the incident. The driver was transported to La Grange Memorial Hospital after the incident as a precautionary measure. Police said their investigation is still ongoing.
Hinsdale announces snowfall parking, plow operations
adno=S0247158
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – With snow in the forecast – and certainly coming in some large amounts before winter is through – the village of Hinsdale is taking time to remind residents of the town’s parking bans. After 3 inches or more of snow, parking is prohibited on both sides of the street for a full 12 hours after the snowfall as ended. Before an anticipating snowstorm, residents are asked to park in their driveways or garages. This is to allow the village’s plows to safely and easily get by on the streets and remove snow from the road. In the event of a snowstorm, plows are sent out
based on a priority system, meaning main roads and well traveled routes, such as roads leading to schools, will be plowed first. According to the village’s website, www.villageofhinsdale.org, plowing operations can take anywhere between eight and 12 hours after a heavy snowfall. The village also suggests resident limit their traveling during snowstorms, because vehicles can easily become stuck in snow and require rescue. For information or questions on snow removal or parking, contact the village’s Public Services at 630-789-7030. Offices are open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Stop giving tax dollars to pro sports teams SPRINGFIELD – It appears Pat Quinn cleared the way for his 30-year-old campaign aide, Lou Bertuca, to start drawing a $160,000 per year, taxpayer-funded salary heading the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority. That agency owns the ballpark where the White Sox play and helped renovate Soldier Field, where the Chicago Bears play. Some politicians are crying foul. They don’t think VIEWS it is appropriate for a group Scott of Quinn appointees on Reeder the ISFA board to appoint someone new to be executive director of the authority when only weeks remain in the lameduck governor’s term. After all, he’s not exactly coming off a winning season. Bertuca was Quinn’s campaign manager. And he has no experience in professional sports. Why on Earth are we giving tax dollars to subsidize the wealthy individuals who own professional sports teams? I witnessed firsthand the traumatic delivery of the nation’s first major sports subsidy bill. In the waning minutes of June 30, 1988, then-Gov. James Thompson literally was racing against the clock to pass a $120 million subsidy for the White Sox, who were threatening to move to Florida. The measure needed to pass before midnight, when the legislative session would go into overtime and a supermajority would be needed to pass legislation. The measure had the support of House Speaker Mike Madigan, a die-hard Sox fan. Since the club doesn’t own the facility, it pays no property taxes. When the White Sox subsidy vote was brought before the House, a majority of lawmakers voted against the proposal. But instead of counting the votes, the presiding officer – a top Madigan lieutenant – left the roll call open as Thompson walked to the desks of each lawmaker voting “no” and persuaded them one by one to change their votes. The last lawmaker necessary to make a majority switched his vote when the hands on the main clock in the House Chamber were a few minutes past midnight, but the presiding officer, Majority Leader Jim McPike, said it was a few minutes before midnight on his watch and declared the bill passed. It was a sleazy beginning to a slimy practice of giving money to help the rich fellas who own sports teams. Many other jurisdictions have followed Illinois’ lead in this shameful practice. It’s time for Illinois to take the lead again and say no to these types of subsidies.

There are only a few days left in 2014, but it’s not too late to do some good. Reporter Nathan Lurz rounded up some options in last week’s paper for volunteering in the area, including Community House and HCS Family Services in Hinsdale. For details, visit shawurl.com/1mt8. Great work by Darien’s Sean Gallagher, who recently was named the recipient of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Norman Cohn Hope Award. Gallagher was honored for his work as president of the society’s greater Illinois Chapter, including 27 percent growth in fundraising from 2013 to 2014.

Freedom of speech must be upheld I’m going to start my own protest right here, and it’s against people in the western suburbs making ignorant comments about the rights of other people. Can you imagine what kind of riots there would if people could not pass judgment on people from other ethnic and social economic backgrounds? It would make Ferguson look like Disneyland.

I’d like to remind readers of the Sound Off column that, as the guidelines clearly state the comments “should not be taken as fact.” Several recent comments about the Glen Ellyn Park District, which all appear to be from the same person, are misleading at best and, in some cases, simply not true. For the record, a routine exit poll survey is being conducted, based on support from a majority of the board, and will cost about 10 cents per resident; it is not a “pool survey.” The proposed turf at Newton Park represents the best price negotiated by a purchasing cooperative commonly used by public agencies, and is far from “the most expensive turf option.” It has yet to be decided which features will be included. I would encourage all readers to contact the Park District, or visit their website, for accurate information.

I certainly agree with last week’s article “Officer was doing his job.” The media needs to stop building this up and antagonizing people. They are somewhat responsible for all the protests. The officer was doing his job.

6. Title town What happened: Hinsdale Central High School athletics enjoyed one of the most successful fall seasons of any school in state history. Starting with boys and girls golf titles on Oct. 18 and ending with the boys soccer team winning state on Nov. 8, the Red Devils brought home five team state titles. The boys golf team won its third consecutive title, the boys cross country team defended its 2013 crown, girls tennis won for the third time in four years, and a strong defense backstopped the boys soccer team to its first title since 1975. The most impressive performance may have come from the girls golf team. One of the top teams in the state on a yearly basis, the Red Devils captured the program’s first state title after finishing second in 2006 and third in 2013 and 2010.Cen-

7. Justice for Kelli What happened: John L. Wilson Jr. was found guilty of first-degree murder for the 2011 murder of 14-year-old Kelli O’Laughlin. The verdict, after the September trial, came from a jury of five men and seven women which spent almost two and a half hours deliberating. Wilson received four guilty verdicts from the jury. During the trial, prosecutors told the jury that Wilson was burglarizing the O’Laughlin’s Indian Head Park home when Kelli returned home from school and surprised him in the act. Quote of note:“Justice will never be served because Kelli will never be coming home,” said Brenda O’Laughlin, Kelli’s mom.

Hinsdale Central, South teams hoop it up for holidays By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The winter holidays brings colder temperatures outside, but area gyms will heat up with boys and girls basketball tournament action. Here’s the scoop on Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South:
BOYS Hinsdale Central
n Tournament: Proviso West Holiday Tournament n Location: 4701 W. Harrison St., Hillside n Next game: 2:30 p.m. today vs. New Trier
What to watch: The Red Devils earned the No. 5 seed at the tourney, but had to face a solid Proviso East squad in their opening game on Monday, a game the Red Devils led 39-32 at halftime but lost 77-69. The setback against Proviso didn’t alter Central’s tourney goals, and it bounced back with a 4338 win against Morton to improve to 8-2 on the season. “Our goal is just to play as well as we can play,” Central head coach Nick Latorre said. “If anything, we’re able to see areas we need to improve upon. We talk about improvement every single time we step on the floor.” A win against New Trier today would send the Red Devils to the consolation title game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Hinsdale South
n Tournament: Jack Tosh Holiday Classic n Location: 355 W. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst n First game: 5 p.m. today vs. Schaumburg
What to watch: After winning DeKalb’s Chuck Dayton tournament over the holidays last year, the Hornets move on to a new challenge at York’s long-running Tosh tourney. The Hornets enter the tourney with a 4-4 record after a 51-42 win against Downers Grove South on Dec. 19. In junior center Barret Benson, the Hornets possess a high-

What to watch: Central earned the No. 7 seed in the 16team field at Wheaton North and started the tourney with a 63-36 win against Elk Grove on Monday. After trailing 2314 at halftime, the Red Devils blitzed the Grenadiers in the second half, including a 22-4 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter. Gabrielle Rush scored 29 points and Emma Day had nine to lead the way. The Red Devils were scheduled to play No. 2 seed Hersey in the second round on Tuesday before resuming the tournament today. The tournament ended a long layoff for the Red Devils, who had previously played on Dec. 9. They also have a bit of downtime after the tourney before playing Proviso West on Jan. 6.
