Rates to rise in Hinsdale’s electric aggregation program By MATTHEW HENDRICKSON mhendrickson@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – An official with the village of Hinsdale announced Monday, even though the rates will continue to be lower than those of ComEd customers, residents enrolled in the village’s electrical aggregation program will see their rates rise. Hinsdale voters approved a referendum question in 2012 for the village to join an electrical aggregation program, which took advantage of deregulated electric markets to provide lower rates on their electricity. Nordic Energy Services was the village’s successful bidder. The village’s contract with Nordic is effective through July. Hinsdale residents will now pay 5.4 cents per kilowatt-hour through the remainder of the contract. According to the village, a customer with a $200 a month electric bill would see their bill rise to about $215. The village said ComEd’s current rate is 7.6 cents per kwh, and residents will continue to see significant savings.

According to the village, their contract with Nordic allows for adjustments to the electricity supply rate because of regulatory events. Several such recent events required the rate for Hinsdale residents would need to be adjusted. Nordic will mail resident enrolled in the program a letter this month alerting them to the change in pricing. The new rates will begin with residents’ February meter readings. The village said that in the spring, they will begin the process to select a new supplier, with the upcoming end of their contract with Nordic. According to the village, residents in the electrical aggregation program have saved a total of $4.8 million – about $974 per household – through the village’s program with Nordic. In a news release, the village’s energy consultant, David Hoover of the Northern Illinois Municipal Electric Collaborative, stated that he knew of no other aggregation program has achieved as great a level of savings for residents as Hinsdale’s program provided.

According to Kurinsky, the parade selection committee has a U.S. office which seeks out bands to participate in the parade. He said he believed the band was seen when it attended a Veterans Day parade in New York City in 2014, which led to its nomination and selection for the London parade.

Student enrollment growth forces D-181 to move administrative office
Mia Vonfiglio (center), a seventh-grader at Highlands Middle School, stands with her friends as she holds a prize she won during a game of Heads and Tails at the Happy to Be Me event organized by the Robert Crown Center on Saturday. Robert Crown Center hosts Happy to Be Me SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA About 340 women and girls attended a lunch and speaker series at the Happy to Be Me event hosted Saturday at The Carlisle, 435 E. Butterfield Road in Lombard. The event included ABC7 news anchor Judy Hsu and health educator Barb Barret as speakers. The event was focused around a theme of woman and girls being the hero of their own journey. In addition to lunch, guests enjoyed
boutique shopping and raffles were held with items from dozens of local businesses and individuals that were donated given away. The proceeds from the raffles will go to support the Robert Crown Center’s mission. The confidence building event was developed to combat the decline in confidence experienced by teen girls as they move from childhood to adulthood, organizers said. The presentations at the event focused on healthy body image, positive self-talk and female empowerment.

BURR RIDGE – School District 181 is growing and more space is needed, district officials said as the Board of Education voted Monday to approve a lease agreement that will move the district’s administrative offices from Burr Ridge to Clarendon Hills. Currently located in Elm School at 6010 S. Elm St. in Burr Ridge, the move will bring the offices to 115 W. 55th Street in Clarendon Hills by a vote of 6-0. At the time the district’s offices moved into Elm School in the summer of 2010, enrollment was decreasing at Elm School. A small student body allowed the district to claim unused space in the school building. But with enrollment now increasing at Elm School, the district was forced to find a new solution. Even after a staff lounge was converted into a classroom and some staff members were moved into shared offices, there still was more space needs by the school than could be created by further reconfirmations, according to a district news release following the vote. The administration also explored the possibility of adding portable offices units outside the building, but the idea was found not to be cost effective and would have taken up a considerable amount of playground space at the
school, officials said. Before settling on their new home in Clarendon Hills, the district said it looked at several other office spaces before making their decision. The plan now is for Elm School to reclaim all the space of the former Administrative Center. Additional parking freed up from the move also will benefit students by addressing a safety-related issue related to the school’s pickup line where students are picked up from school. The administration expects that it will benefit officials as well by having their entire administrative team based in one location. Elm School won’t be the only to benefit. The move also will free up space at Walker School, with the move of the district’s technology staff and buildings and ground staff moved to the new Clarendon Hills location as well. The district’s lease at their new office space spans five years. Rent for the first two months will be $91,640. The yearly cost from July 2015 through June 2016 will be $187,212, according to the release. The cost will increase slightly every year, officials said, with a total cost of $202,632 for July 2019 through June 2020. The rent will include all utilities, custodial services and the furniture currently at the office location. The move to the new office space will take place beginning in May.

Hinsdale South High School Principal Stephanie Palmer talks with community member Jill Pachicano on Feb. 12 during a Hinsdale High School District 86 meeting on its master facilities plan.
It’s good to see the community come together to weigh in on how to best move forward with the Hinsdale High School District 86 master facilities plan. Volunteers gathered Feb. 12 to discuss whether the master plan needs to be updated to accommodate changes in education and population. We look forward to seeing how the community feedback is implemented later this year. Residents of the Timberlake subdivision have put their money where their mouth is. Neighbors decided they didn’t want new development going up in the 9 acres of land adjacent to their homes in unincorporated DuPage County near Hinsdale. They pooled their own money to make up the $40,000 shortfall so the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County could buy the land. Looks like a win-win for everyone. Our administrative team has remained current on the development of this assessment since its inception as details have been released, though not all information on this change COMMUNITY has been made clear, such as VOICE details about how and when Don results will be shared. We White continue to keep our families informed as we learn more. We created an overview that was sent home with students and posted online. We link to PARCC content on our Twitter feed (@ CCSD181), and helpful resources are available our website: www. d181.org > Learning > Assessments. Some educators and parents have shared concerns about the PARCC Assessments, primarily related to lost instructional time for test taking, a significant increase in rigor, and a test format that is considerably different from other assessments students have experienced. Nonetheless, administering the PARCC exams is a state mandate, and it is critical that we begin to assess students in a manner that aligns to the new, more rigorous and internationally benchmarked learning standards. I believe our District 181 community needs to engage in a healthy, constructive debate about the number of assessments we give, the time they require, whether the data is truly giving us insights into our learners and whether what is occurring in the classroom is positively impacted by the data we collect. However, I don’t think the progress we are making as a state or within our district regarding the implementation of PARCC should be affected by what I believe is a good opportunity to challenge our systems and learners. There may be glitches in the first and maybe even subsequent administrations of PARCC. I also know the test will challenge our thinking as educators, and it will certainly challenge our students. This is a far different assessment from the ISAT, and the significant changes may result in an initial decline in performance for many districts. It is important to remember that this assessment is only one measure of student achievement and growth. This will be an opportunity for us to strengthen our district, for us to participate in a cutting-edge assessment, and we will gather new data that has the potential to better inform our thinking around what our children need as learners. That is the essence of our continuous improvement cycle, using the best information available to provide the highest quality education we can to all students.

LETTERS anything but fiscally conservative. Stop the departure of administrators and teachers who have left the district prematurely, to be replaced by teachers with little or no previous teaching experience. Stop the destruction and dismantling of our excellent school district before it is too late. Become informed and involved and read the history of this current Board. Attend the Board meetings. The time
is now to make the change and ensure that the quality and reputation of our high schools continue to thrive and grow and does not suffer further destruction by this current Board majority. Vote for leadership with integrity April 7. Vote for Planson-Hirsman- Carpenter. Vote 2-3-5.

SOUND OFF The village of Lemont has passports for parking cars and trailers in front of a house for more than 48 hours at a time. There are some places where trailers and cars have been parked for months at a time. I’m wondering where enforcement officers are to alleviate this condition.
Parking is causing problems They shouldn’t have parking on both sides of the street in Elmhurst. I was driving my truck down a side street with cars parked on both sides of the street and I couldn’t get through and had to back up. What if someone needed an ambulance or a fire truck, they would not drive down the street.
To District 41 administration and the Board of Education: Space is limited at many of our elementary schools, so revisit the current curriculum and make it fit within the existing walls. Be creative and find a good solution that works for students, teachers and parents. Let’s focus on the fundamentals and save learning Spanish and dual language for an after school activity. Learning to master the English language should be number one priority for all students. Let’s start diagramming sentences in English now.
Snow shoveling laws not needed Responding to the Sound Off “Pay up, Elmhurst residents” about issuing tickets to residents who don’t shovel the sidewalk in front of their house, anyone older than 55 should not shovel snow, they put themselves at risk for a heart attack. In addition, not everyone owns a snowblower or can afford a snow removal service. ... We don’t need to punish these people because a few bad apples, who are capable, but don’t clean the snow off the sidewalks in front of their place of residence. Writing tickets would mean the city would need

to spend money and resources on monitoring, paperwork and administration. It would end up costing the city more money to issue tickets.
No consistency for signs Downers Grove has issued a variance for signage at Art Van Furniture before they are open for business and contributing sales tax income to the village, and to Sara Lee for a nonretail location. Yet, they are using our tax dollars to fight the long standing 80-plus-year-old historic business, Leibundguth Moving & Storage.
Incumbents do not represent Downers Grove residents The Downers Grove Village Council would not agree to hear from the voters/ taxpayers by referendum regarding a massive village redevelopment project, but now they want to survey voters after the election. Really? Where’s the plan? This is just another indication the current incumbents do not want to represent our best interests if they do not want us to tell them by ballot referendum. These jokers need to hit the road April 7. Here is our plan voters: Replace the incumbents.
Edwards House is costing money Let me get this straight, the village of Downers Grove proposes to waive building permit fees, which means the village is paying $140,000 to move Mr. Tillotson’s house and destroy or severely trim 20 maple trees on Maple Avenue. We already have a historic district with brick streets and signs. Maybe we could spend the money on a couple of squad cars, emergency equipment or any number of worthwhile items that could benefit the village. I’m sure glad elections are coming up.
Looking forward to parade

As an Elmhurst resident and Illinois taxpayer, I will proudly attend the St. Patrick’s Day parade, and I’m honored that Gov. Rauner chose to be our grand marshal this year. Gov. Rauner’s executive order to prevent unions from collecting forced fair share contributions from workers who choose not to join their ranks is an example of his drive to eliminate corruption and pull Illinois out of the past.

Leave Clyde Estates alone Hey, Downers Grove, don’t just straighten out and increase pavement to destroy the unique Clyde Estates subdivision. With a little extra effort, you can convert the two Clyde circles into portraits of Lenin and Stalin, they were the masters of forced urban reorganization. YOUR CHILDREN can be tax savers and tax problems this year. Here is why. The Good news: • You can get a child credit of $1000 if your Adjusted Gross Income is under $110,000 • You can get a big Education Credit which can be refundable if your college age child has a 1098T and your AGI is under $180,000 The Bad News: • First time filers in IL MUST get a paper check so you should use your address since checks do not get forwarded • If your children (dependents) are not covered by health insurance all year you may get a health care tax penalty • If you claim your child as a dependent, he/ she cannot claim themselves. If you or they do their taxes and claim them, your return will be rejected by the IRS and you can lose the big education credit.
STRAUSS TAX SERVICE can accurately prepare your 2014 tax returns, and those of your children. We can answer your questions, avoid IRS efile rejects and save you money. We are located at 624 62nd Street, Downers Grove and are open from 9AM - 9PM daily.

To the editors: Please remember how vitally important it is to make your voice heard in the next election to be held Tuesday, April 7. The future of District 86 schools depends upon casting your important vote for Planson-Hirsman- Carpenter, 2-3-5 on the ballot. Stop President [Richard] Skoda and the present board majority

Stop the waste of time and money hiring search firms, incurring huge legal fees, and funding new studies on matters that have been previously vetted and accepted. other things that parents can expect are for their children to learn to make the right choices, and achieve ahead of their peers. Service to the local and global communities is also a vital part of formation at St. Petronille School. Each year Service takes the older students off campus to Churchill Park in Glen Ellyn to do restoration work, and out to Aurora to prepare and pack foods for an organization called Feed My Starving Children. Closer to “home” an ongoing and in-house food drive called “Friday Foods” sees the gathering and delivery of non-perishable food items each week to the neighboring Glen Ellyn Food Pantry. It is this type of service project that teaches students that hunger is a problem not only during the holiday season, but all year ‘round; and that serving others is a practice that should be built in to our day-to-day lives. As the logo proclaims, St. Petronille School, like other Catholic Schools, does teach more! Their formula for success seems to lie in the partnership between parents and teachers; and the climate of faith in which the educational, spiritual, and leadership formation process takes place.

t. Petronille School is a kindergarten through Grade 8 Catholic Elementary School. Located within walking distance of the downtown area of Glen Ellyn and the Station for the west line of the Metra train, St. Petronille School is serving more than 540 students and their families this year. “St. Pet’s” educates the whole child, and serves students of a wide variety of learning styles. An important element in the education of students here is the prevailing emphasis on leadership formation through service to others. St. Petronille School is one of the 48 Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Joliet, which spans a geographical area from Bensenville to Kankakee. Their logo boasts the words, “We Teach More.” And because more is taught here, parents are able to expect more. Beyond teaching Math, Science, Social Studies, and many other advanced and core courses, teachers also lead meaningful and open classroom discussions about faith, values, and spirituality, providing children with an early opportunity to explore things about the world and themselves—things not found in textbooks and lesson plans. t. Joseph School, 4832 Highland Avenue in Downers Grove, is now enrolling students for the 2015-16 school year. “The best way to get to know us is to take a tour,” said Principal Rita Stasi. “We’re proud to share our tradition of excellence in Catholic education, and invite parents to take a look at our award-winning Pre-K through 8th Grade program. We have many wonderful stories to share about our students’ achievements this year – both in and out of the classroom.” Based on demand, the school is opening additional preschool morning sessions for 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds beginning in August 2015; there are spots now available in these popular classes. Since Pre-K3, Pre-K4 and Kindergarten fill up quickly, parents are encouraged to register as soon as possible to reserve a place for their child. St. Joseph’s enrollment has continued to climb over the past few years. The
school offers a personalized approach to learning that’s faith-centered, academically challenging, interactive, and puts children on a path to success – academically, spiritually and socially. Small class sizes, Spanish in all grades, no-cut sports, extracurricular activities and Extended Care are popular features of the school’s program. “It’s been an exciting year,” Principal Stasi indicated. “With continued growth, we’ve been able to provide many enhancements to our facilities and technology program, including a new Computer Lab, LRC and laptops. We’ve also launched a Kindergarten Tablet Pilot, Junior High Chrome Book Pilot, WiFi throughout the school and Google Classroom collaboration. Parents, students and teachers are really excited about these additions.” Please call Julie at 630-969-4306 to schedule a tour or shadow day, or learn more at www.stjosephdg.org/school.

A
recent ranking of America’s best careers bodes well for students at Midwestern University. US News and World Report recently published its “100 Best Jobs of 2015” listing, ranking careers based on a combination of factors that include financial compensation, the balance between professional challenge and stress levels, and opportunities within the various fields. Five of the top 15 careers represented on the list are part of Midwestern University’s graduate healthcare education offerings, including dentistry, which was ranked first overall thanks to salary, low unemployment, and work-life balance. Midwestern’s College of Dental Medicine-Illinois is one of only three dental schools in Illinois. In addition to dentistry, other Midwestern programs that ranked in the US News and World Report list’s top 15 careers include osteopathic medicine, physical therapy, physician assistant, and occupational therapy. Since Midwestern’s founding in 1900, the University has gradually expanded its healthcare career offerings, creating programs in 10 colleges across two campuses in Illinois and Arizona. On the Downers Grove Campus, Midwestern University currently offers the following degree programs:

he Wheaton Yamaha Music School, part of an international family of schools providing children with comprehensive music education programs, has introduced thousands of children to the world of music in its 45+ years in Wheaton. Music at Yamaha is a wonderful adventure with singing, rhythm, movement, ear training, keyboard and piano activities. In classes together, parents and children discover the joys of making music. The school’s programs provide students with an introduction to principles of music — relative pitch, notation, melody, harmony, and rhythm — all in an atmosphere that is nurturing, rewarding, and fun. Children play to learn, and their natural musical abilities flourish; the solid foundation for a lifetime with music is built.
Here’s a fun testimonial:

ransitioning to a senior living community can be filled with mixed emotions from everyone involved. You may have many questions. Is it really necessary at this time? Caring for an aging parent is one of the most difficult tasks you can ever undertake. An illness or debilitating hip injury can lead to your parent needing help with laundry, bills, grocery shopping, or getting to and from medical appointments. Your relationship with your family and friends begins to suffer. Worse of all, the relationship with your parent suffers. Once you become a care giver the parent child relationship takes a backseat. Adult children caring for their aging parents are becoming more popular as well. According to Pew Research, 30% of adult children today say their parent needs help handling their affairs. However, there are steps you can take to make the task of being a caregiver much easier.

New Solutions to your Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy?
Neuropathy Recovery I Workshop
FREE
f you suffer from a single one of these torturous symptoms- numbness, tingling, burning or sharp nerve pain, then read on. A new breakthrough treatment could change your life. Neuropathy can affect every part of your life - walking, sitting, sleeping, socializing, your ability to enjoy your relationships and so much more. If you have tired “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica, Neurotin or other meds) without getting the results you want then this may be the most important information that you ever read. There is a simple reason that most treatments fail, because at best they only cover up your symptoms and do not help your damaged nerves. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects people in every walk of life. It is estimated that 20 million Americans and 60% of diabetics suffer from this disorder. There are many kinds of neuropathy, the symptoms of which include burning, tingling, weakness, numbness, paralysis, and dull to excruciating pain - especially in the hands and feet. Although many neuropathies have no known causes, neuropathy is often associated with other conditions. Examples are: Diabetes, shingles, toxins, autoimmune disorders, bulging discs that compress on nerves, spinal stenosis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and poor nutrition. Statin drugs and chemotherapy can also cause neuropathy. For the last three years Dr. Susan Kelenyi, DC of Glen Ellyn, IL has worked extensively with peripheral neuropathy patients. Dr. Kelenyi describes peripheral neuropathy as damage to the nerves, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. “This can result in pain, loss of feeling, and inability to control muscles, such as difficulty with walking. As with any other condition, there is no “one size fits all” remedy for those suffering from neuropathies and treatment may vary depending on the cause and severity.” However, many individuals can and do find relief using natural remedies. And this is where Dr. Kelenyi steps in. Of the many causes of peripheral neuropathies”, says Dr. Kelenyi, “ a major one comes from a metabolic condition. You cannot drug your way out of a metabolic condition. It requires a change in lifestyle.” Dr. Kelenyi says, “Diet is crucial when addressing peripheral neuropathy, especially in diabetics and autoimmune disorders. Harmful foods to be avoided include alcohol, sugar, processed foods, fast foods, junk foods, sodas of all types, foods sprayed with pesticides, and trans-fatty acids. Sweeteners and additives contained in diet soda and processed foods such as MSG and aspartame can negatively impact the nervous system.” As a Board Eligible Chiropractic Neurologist, Dr. Kelenyi performs specific metabolic and neurologic tests to help determine what is causing the problem. There are a few primary types of neuropathies: Large or small diameter or both as well as motor. If jerking is involved then it can be as much a problem in the brain due to trans-neural degeneration as it is in the peripheral nerve. A thorough and comprehensive exam ensures an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Kelenyi states that her peripheral neuropathy recovery program is a combination of different cutting edge techniques and protocols. “We use revolutionary breakthrough protocols in the treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy… one of the therapies offered is Horizontal Therapy which is the latest, breakthrough in the science of electro-medicine and the most advanced and effective form of bioelectric treatment available to date. I’m very proud to be the first in the area to offer this to my patients ...pain management without drugs or surgery to get lasting results.” Additional therapies may include: oxygen, vibration, spinal decompression, cold laser therapy along with brain balance therapies to create a layered approach to “wake up” the nerves so they can function again and re-educate nerve pathways that have gone “hay-wire”. Dr. Kelenyi says, “Our solutions are non-drug, non-surgical approaches, that are researched based and based on prior clinical success. The reason we achieve excellent outcomes is because we take both a metabolic and neurological approach in our program.” She says it’s a very rewarding way of practicing. “We get chronically ill people coming from all over the Chicagoland area, even out of state, to our clinic. The most important thing for these patients is results. We get results.”
FRIDAY, MARCH 6TH AT 11:00AM
Ask yourself… • Has your condition affected every part of your life? • Have you tried “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica®, Neurotin®, or other medications) without getting the results you want? • Do you suffer with other secondary symptoms such as falling, dexterity, muscle atrophy, etc.? • Would you rather ix the underlying problem rather than cover it up with drugs?
Topics to be discussed • What is and what are the main causes for Peripheral Neuropathy • Diabetes & Peripheral Neuropathy • If you are taking “statin” drugs - what your doctor doesn’t tell you could hurt you • If your nerves are damaged what does that mean for the rest of your body • Why your lab results do not tell the whole story • How you can live pain free with a clinically proven program
RSVP Required. Seating is Limited. Call

Restaurant reviews
Dao explores sushi and Thai cuisines OAKBROOK TERRACE – Finding a restaurant that delectably delivers on its promise of multiple cuisines in one menu can be an arduous task. Far too often, restaurant owners spread the bill of fare too thin by offering a wide array of dishes from a number of countries, most of which fall short of the precedents set by single-focus sushi bars, Mexican restaurants and Brazilian steakhouses. But Dao Sushi & Thai bucks that trend. Billed as a restaurant that specializes in both Japanese and Thai food, Dao’s Oakbrook Terrace location not only fulfilled its promise, but exceeded my expectations. As we sought refuge from a bitterly cold evening, Dao’s ambiance and decor made my companion and me forget the temperatures outside. Upon entering, we immediately took note of the crowded bar and lounge area, which was furnished with a 15-foot black stone bar top, with additional tables. As we were led to our seats – a semicircle booth nestled in one of two cozy dining rooms – we passed a 5-foot Buddha statue, an impressive fish tank and a sushi bar with two chefs. We sat down, promptly ordered edamame and king crab rangoon as starters, and then spent the next 15 minutes dissecting the menu. The appetizers were delivered in under 10 minutes. The edamame arrived warm and portioned with just the right amount of salt, and the crab rangoon dumplings were some of the largest I have ever encountered. The three-page menu – with everything from soups and salads, to signature rolls, house specials, rice dishes and a select array of Thai noodle entrees – can be daunting to anyone unfamiliar with the two cuisines. But overall, it is very similar to what you would encounter at any high-end Japanese and Thai restaurant. We settled on a tuna roll (six pieces), a Bears roll (eight piec-

Culinary adventure awaits at Dao Sushi & Thai, open for lunch and dinner in Oakbrook Terrace.

I like to consider myself a sushi connoisseur, and I can wholeheartedly say that the Dao rolls hold their own against some of the best sushi restaurants in the western
suburbs. For me, the highlight of the evening was the Bears roll, a perfectly balanced, textured bite of sushi that exploded with flavors of avocado, shrimp and soft-shell crab. The tempura combo included lightly battered pieces of
shrimp, onions, sweet potato, zucchini and eggplant, and was served with a soy dipping sauce. The chicken pad Thai was a savory mix of long, thin noodles sauteed with egg, scallions, bean curd and peanuts, garnished by cabbage.
Both entrees were generously portioned, and splitting one would have been more than enough after an appetizer and a flight of sushi. The service was attentive, courteous and efficient: Our water glasses were always more than half full, and idle plates were removed promptly. With appealing aesthetics and ambiance, Dao proves to be an inviting destination on two culinary fronts.

State title is ‘pretty special’ moment for King By JASON ROSSI
Josh King state scores
jrossi@shawmedia.com CHAMPAIGN – Josh King has wrestled for most of his life, so he knows what he accomplished Saturday was something special. The Hinsdale South junior defeated Plainfield South junior Eric Johnson 9-6 to win the 220-pound title at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament at the State Farm Center. “It’s not really something you can describe,” said King, who finished the season with a 49-1 record and captured his first state medal in his third trip to the state tourney. “It’s something you work at all your life since I was four when I started. You win regional titles and sectional titles, but when you get to state everything is so much harder, but knowing you’re the one who came out on top and won it is pretty special.” With his title, King became the fifth state champion in Hinsdale South history and the first since Sebastian Pique won at 112 pounds in 2011. King won with first-period falls in his first two state matches, then had won 11-2 to reach the title bout. He nearly got pinned in the first period but tied it at 4-4 heading to the second. He led 9-4 in the third before surrendering a stalling point and an escape point late in the match. Johnson was physically similar to King, which presented a bit of a challenge. “Most of the things I would do against regular guys wouldn’t work,” King said. “When I was on top in the first period I tried to tilt him and almost got [pinned], so I had to realize I couldn’t just use what I usually do. I had to change up the game plan, which was kind of weird, but I got it done.” After time ran out on the match and the referee raised his arm as a state champion,

On Saturday, Matt Allen was the one in the spotlight as he wrestled for the Class 3A 285-pound title at the State Farm Center in Champaign. “It was a pretty amazing feeling,” the Hinsdale Central junior said. “To finally get to do it was nice.” After three straight wins in the main draw, what wasn’t as nice was a 1-0 loss to Marist’s Jake Ford in the championship bout. Allen was in top position to start the second period after a scoreless first and let Ford loose, but he wasn’t able to get the crucial takedown in the second or escape in the third to change the tenor of the match. “I’m thinking about what I could have done different and how terrible it feels and how I don’t want to feel like this again,” Allen said. Allen said he wrestled smart in his three decision wins to reach the finals, but a defeat to end his season is going to motivate him for a better finish next year. “I liked being in the finals, but losing in the finals is not what I wanted,” he said. Ryan Chu also swam to a state berth in the 100 backstroke (fifth, 1:00.25) as the Hornets finished fourth in the sectional with 110 points.
BOYS BASKETBALL Hinsdale Central The Red Devils finished the West Suburban Silver slate with a 66-37 win Friday against visiting York. They finished 8-4 and in second place in the conference.

Class: 4A Seed: No. 20 Regional: Downers Grove South Sectional: East Aurora Opening game: 6 p.m. Monday vs. No. 13 Hinsdale South Outlook: A torch has been passed, and the Mustangs’ young guns are giving fans reason to hope. Sophomores Denis Alibegovic and T.J. Clifford turned in breakout performances this season, and while DGS might be a year or two away from putting together a substantial playoff run, opposing defenses will have to plan accordingly for the Mustangs’ stellar shooters. Downers Grove South will host a regional, and the team hopes the home crowd can help pull off an upset against No. 13 Hinsdale South. The Mustangs could face No. 4 Hinsdale Central in the regional semifinals and Willowbrook in the regional final.

No. 13 Hinsdale South or No. 20 Downers Grove South Outlook: Central was on track for a top sectional seed before Matt Rafferty suffered a hand injury Jan. 23 and missed the better part of a month. The Red Devils went 2-4 without Rafferty, but the 6-foot-7 Furman recruit recently returned to bolster the team’s chances in the playoffs. The Red Devils have familiarity with some of their possible regional foes as they faced Downers Grove North, Hinsdale South and Willowbrook in the regular season. The Hornets finished the season with a 15-15 record in Love’s first season as coach, and he said he saw the squad develop both its basketball IQ and team chemistry as the season progressed. “I’m very proud of what we accomplished this season given the players we had and me coming in as a firstyear coach,” said Love, who also praised the efforts of former Hinsdale South head coach and current assistant Jen Belmonte. “[The players] had to adjust to my style and the way I do things, and they responded pretty well.”

Hinsdale Central’s boys swimming team finished second at the York sectional Saturday, but it was still a successful meet. The Red Devils tallied 271.5 points (Lyons Township won with 326), but they earned 15 spots at the state meet, which begins today and continues Saturday at New Trier. Franco Reyes was a sectional champ in the 100-yard butterfly (50.39) and earned a second solo state berth in the 200 individual medley (second, 1:55.69). Reyes joined Craig Smith, Billy Leader and Brian Powell on the 200 medley relay (third, 1:36.69). Reyes, Powell, Adam Pircon and Brian Portland narrowly finished second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:26.00. The 400 freestyle relay team of Tommy Gruchala, William Bowater, Pircon and Portland finished second to make state. Pircon qualified for state in the 200 and 500 freestyle races. Portland made it on his own in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Powell earned a state spot in the 50 freestyle, Smith qualified in the 100 backstroke, Bowater made it in the 200 freestyle, and Michael Dietrich got a state berth in the 100 backstroke. Divers Emmett Mohl and Elliott Arnold also earned state meet berths at the sectional.

Nowak nabs three medals at state incredible,” Tritch said. “If there was one gymnast that I knew could do it, it was Maddie. She made her routines count for state and I’m so proud of her.” Nowak earned two more medals in the event finals, tying for fourth on vault with a 9.7 and capturing fifth on bars with a 9.525 to become the first Hornet to win three medals in one season. She also tied for seventh on floor with a 9.45. That performance was made more remarkable because Nowak, who is just the fourth medalist in school history, got a relatively late start in gymnastics at age 10. “In our club gym it’s more of an environment where if you’re motivated, if you work hard, there are people there to facilitate your workouts,” Nowak said. “It’s a gym driven by self-motivation so I was motivated even though I was old and most clubs don’t take girls that old. I was able to progress.”
By MATT LE CREN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com PALATINE – Maddie Nowak is a tough girl to please. The Hinsdale South junior gymnast rarely is as impressed with her performance as others are and she doesn’t show a lot of emotion. “I try to go in pretty serious,” Nowak said. “Everybody is always telling me I’m way too serious but I think I open up as the meet goes on and if I’m having a good meet then I’ll be a little bit more [outgoing].” There were plenty of smiles all around at last weekend’s state meet as Nowak carted off three state medals, tying her with Jacey Herman as the most decorated gymnast in school history. Nowak earned her first medal Friday when she placed fifth in the allaround competition with a career-high score of 37.2. She joins Herman, who was fourth in 1994, as the only Hornets to medal in the all-around. Nowak recorded 9.625 on vault, 9.425 on floor, 9.35 on uneven bars and 8.8 on balance beam. She advanced to Saturday’s event finals on the first three events. “Absolutely I’m pleased,” Nowak

They should have plenty of confidence in the playoff opener against a Downers Grove South time they have already defeated three times. In 6-foot-10 big man Barret Benson, South has a player few teams can match up with. Getting secondary scoring from players like Brian Kern and Sean McCormack will be key. “We’ve played just about every style, and I think we’re prepared for almost anything,” South head coach Brett Moore said. “Hopefully some guys step up. That’s the No. 1 thing.” If the Hornets get past DGS, a rematch with Hinsdale Central would be at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Red Devils won 71-50 early in the season.
