Teen raises $14K to send cookies to soldiers HINSDALE – Whether you enjoy Thin Mints, Samoas or you’re willing to give the new Rah-Rah-Raisins a try, there are more than a few sweet reasons to support your local Girl Scouts. This year, however, there was an even bigger reason in Hinsdale. Hinsdale Central High School student and Girl Scout Nina Grotto, 16, raised $14,000 in donations to send cookies to soldiers overseas as part of a new program, Gift of Caring, through the Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana Girl Scouts. “She’s proud of [her accomplishment], and we’re really proud of her,” said Liz Clarke, Nina’s troop leader. In her donation letter, she explained where the money would go as well as her personal motivation behind the cause. “I included my name, local troop location, and I included that both my father and grandfather were veterans,” Nina said. Nina said she learned a lot about fundraising this year after far surpassing last year’s donation totals. “I sort of learned just how generous companies could be. It was really eye-opening. And persistence. Last year, I didn’t get as many donations because I didn’t write as many letters,” Nina said. As for next year, Nina plans to keep the donations coming in and the cookies going overseas. “I’m just going to try to send as many letters as I can next year. I’m just going to try and repeat what I did this year, really,” Nina said. “Fingers crossed.”

Area restaurateur will bring Casa Margarita to Hinsdale By DAVID LANZAFAME dlanzafame@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Twenty years ago, Al Lotfi opened his first restaurant, Al’s Char-house in La Grange. Since then, Lotfi has become a staple of the La Grange restaurant scene and has grown his business to include Casa Margarita, a Mexican restaurant with locations in La Grange, Bolingbrook and Orland Park. Lotfi of Oak Brook now can add Hinsdale to the list, as a new Casa Margarita is being planned for development at the Hinsdale Metra train station. Lotfi plans to have this new restaurant appeal to morning train crowds. “It’s another Casa Margarita, but it will serve breakfast,” Lotfi said. With its location at the Metra station, Lotfi hopes to cater to morning commuters with a selection of quickto-order and easy-to-take breakfast items. “We’ll have some Mexican breakfast items,” Lotfi said. “But we’ll also have lots of regular American breakfast wraps, sandwiches, bagels and takeout. People won’t have to wait.”

The Hinsdale Casa Margarita also will serve coffeehouse items, such as espresso and lattes, according to Lotfi. The restaurant will still have all the amenities of the other locations, including a lunch and dinner menu, bar and outdoor seating. The Hinsdale Village Board is expected to give final approval for the plan at their meeting Tuesday. Timothy Scott, director of Economic Development and Urban Design for the village of Hinsdale, said the decision to choose the right business for the Hinsdale Metra station was both long and comprehensive. “Ultimately, we have this beautiful and historical train station,” Scott said. “We have this wonderful aesthetic, so we wanted to maximize its utility.” According to Scott, Casa Margarita fit will with Hinsdale because of their ability to adjust their menu, to welcome the early morning train commute and still be able to operate like its sibling restaurants. “There was no shortage of good Photo provided ideas,” Scott said. “The board’s final decision [in selecting Casa Margarita] Casa Margarita owner Al Lotfi and his son, Chase, toast their margaritas at one Lotfi’s was what made the most sense.” restaurants. Lotfi will open a new Casa Margarita location at the Hinsdale Metra station.

HINSDALE – Community Consolidated School District 181 announced Wednesday a new principal has been named for the 2015-16 school year at Madison School, 611 S. Madison St. The District 181 Board of Education selected Kimberly Rutan to take over for retiring principal Melinda McMahon, who has served as the school’s principal for 23 years, according to a news release. Rutan was approved by the Board of Education at their Monday meeting. Previously, Rutan was assistant principal at Central Road School in Palatine School District 15, where she was hired in July 2014. Rutan also has worked as assistant principal at Lincoln Elementary School in Plainfield School District 202. Rutan began her career as a language arts teacher in District 202. She has a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University and a master’s degree from the University of St. Francis. In a news release, Rutan said she was drawn to the opening at Madison School because of the high level of parent and community involvement in the school and district. “I felt honored to have the opportunity to become a part of a school, district and community so committed to helping students achieve their highest potential,” Rutan said in the release. According to Superintendent Don White, more than 80 candidates submitted their interest in the position and 62 people fully completed the online application process. Candidates were screened and had their submitted materials reviewed to narrow the field to five candidates who participated in interviews. Candidates met with White, as well as Madison School staff, parents and district administrators. Rutan will officially start July 1.

Bridge pays special attention to survivors of domestic abuse Recently, we’ve seen incidents of domestic violence highlighted in the media more than ever. While no one enjoys seeing this kind of news, the result of the additional media attention has been more awareness of just how widespread domestic violence is. In fact, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in the United States: COMMUNITY • More than 31 percent VOICE of women have been physiLisa cally abused by an intimate partner at some point in their Doyle lives. • Physical abuse against women results in 1.8 million injuries per year. • Half of women have suffered from emotional/psychological abuse. At Bridge Communities, we know all too well about domestic abuse – each year, about half the clients entering our Transitional Housing Program are abuse survivors. The abuse often played a major role in their becoming homeless; some Bridge families escaped their partner’s violence by fleeing with their children to a shelter while others were thrown out of their homes in a fit of rage. We know Bridge families have been through incredible hardships, and we never minimize their lasting toll either. That’s why one of our partners is Stepping Stones, a Rosellebased organization committed to empowering domestic abuse survivors and creating a path to safety. Every year, mentors and volunteers from Stepping Stones support several Bridge families as they rebuild their lives. In addition to the programming we offer to clients as they shape their futures, such as job assistance, mentoring and tutoring, we also offer free weekly counseling to any client that wants help reconciling with their pasts. On April 24, Bridge’s fifth annual spring luncheon, “Celebrating Women, Transforming Lives,” will pay special attention to survivors of domestic abuse. You won’t want to miss their inspirational stories of resilience in moving forward in their lives. Please join us at Danada House in Wheaton as we celebrate their strength and courage. Tickets for the Celebrating Women, Transforming Lives spring luncheon are available on www.bridgecommunities.org.

Drumbeat of bad news vindicates COD faculty When a union can’t see eye to eye with the leadership of the organization that employs its members, there could be any number of factors at play. Sometimes unions have unrealistic expectations. Sometimes there’s just a clash of personalities. Sometimes a leader making needed changes ruffles some feathers along the way. The College of DuPage Faculty Association’s beef with school President Robert Breuder and the Board of Trustees may include some of those elements. But on balance, the faculty members have largely been vindicated. The faculty registered a vote of no confidence in Breuder in September; in the months since then, pretty much everyone else has joined them in that opinion. The recitation of the failures in leadership at the College of DuPage has become routine yet still shocking. A leaked email suggesting playing games with state money. Fraud at WDCB, the college radio station. Battles over whether imprest payments require auditing. Breuder’s free meals at the money-losing Waterleaf restaurant on campus. And to top it all off, the generous $762,000 in severance that Breuder will get when he vacates his post in disgrace in 2016. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

Compared to all that, the faculty’s concerns lodged in September can sound almost petty at first: “We don’t feel inspired by [Breuder] as a leader,” said Glenn Hansen, president of the faculty association. There are a lot of people in a lot of jobs feeling less than inspired by their bosses. It’s a common refrain. But in this case, we know now there was actual bad management behind the complaint. Given what we’ve learned, who could blame Hansen and the faculty members for not feeling inspired? Breuder’s response to the faculty’s vote only cements that they knew what they were talking about. “Factual accuracy has never been important to the Senate leadership,” he wrote in a response made public recently. “It does not support their irresponsible and unfounded accusations.” Strong words, given Breuder’s email that exposed him as someone who finds no issue with bending the truth when it suits him. Next month, voters will get to pick three members for the College of DuPage Board of Trustees. There are a lot of candidates running. Residents would be wise to keep in mind the recent leadership dysfunction when making their selections.

Hinsdale worker’s photo is in Smithsonian contest By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com

LEMONT – It was the morning of Jan. 23, 2013, when Frank Richert’s mother called him to tell him about an unusual scene occurring on Chicago’s South Side. An abandoned warehouse had caught fire at Ashland Avenue and 38th Street and Chicago firefighters were attempting to put it out in freezing temperatures. Always looking for a good photo opportunity, Richert grabbed his camera and headed to the scene. The 32-year-old Lemont resident submitted one of his photos in the Smithsonian magazine’s annual photo contest and has been selected as one of 10 finalists in the Americana category. Richert works as a manager at Ruth Lake Country Club in Hinsdale, but his passion lies in photography. He has a website called FMR Photography and takes photos for the country club. “My camera’s with me at work every single day,” he said. “I travel with the thing every day.” Most of his photography is of nature and landscapes, which he became in-

terested in after a trip in 2004 to Yellowstone National Park. Richert said he likes to look at the Smithsonian magazine’s photo of the day on its website and submits a photo for their annual contest each year. “You never know,” he said. “It could build some publicity for me.” When Richert arrived on the scene of the warehouse fire, he was amazed at how the water from the hoses froze on the building. “It made this old warehouse look like an ice castle,” he said. “And just the smoke, the way it was bellowing, it was a really cool scene.” He submitted his photo to the Smithsonian last spring and was announced as one of the finalists March 4. His photo is one of 60 finalists overall, selected from more than 26,500 entries from 93 countries. Local lawmakers decline to take state pension By SCOTT REEDER Illinois News Network Four years ago, state Rep. Tom Morrison walked into a state office and announced he didn’t want a pension. “I got a blank look in response,” the Palatine Republican said. “The General Assembly has an incredibly generous pension plan, and I was told I was the first legislator to choose not to participate in more than 14 years. senior, I’m much more willing to go up to people randomly and just stalk them around in the halls and get the answers out of them.” Yong said she is most drawn to feature stories, which she has been able to write a lot of in Vespa. “The people articles in our yearbook are phenomenal,” she said. “They really go in depth. I like that kind of writing. I think that’s definitely something I want to try in the future.” But Yong has found many different forms of media to tell those stories, such as photography, infographics and video and audio recordings. “I really can’t decide [which is my favorite] because I’ll fluctuate a lot between the different media,” she said. “I’ll love writing an article one day, but the next day all I’ll want to be doing is taking pictures or designing graphics.” Kelly said Yong was his first student in 10 years as the yearbook’s adviser that he suggested apply for the Illinois Journalist of the Year award.

with a $111 billion shortfall. As more lawmakers opt out of the state retirement systems, it will inevitably affect overall pension policy said Jim Nowlan, a former political scientist at the University of Illinois. “Either consciously or unconsciously, lawmakers are influenced by the fact that when they are dealing with pension reform, they are dealing with their own pensions, too,” he said. “I think those who have opted out of the pension system will be less generous.” Rauner has proposed reforming the system by reducing future earned pension benefits. A separate plan pushed by legislative leaders that would curb cost of living adjustments soon will be considered by the state Supreme Court. “I didn’t go into politics to get a paycheck for the rest of my life,” state Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park, said. “I went in to politics to make my community a better place. I think it is important for people to remember why our constituents elected us to office – to serve the public and their interests.” State Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, said defined contribution plans such as 401(k) plans are superior to defined benefit programs such as pensions. The government worker version of a 401(k) is a 457 Plan. Breen enrolled in a state-sponsored 457 Plan where only the money he orders taken from his paycheck is invested. “I like the idea of actually owning my retirement savings,” he said. But both Kelly and Yong were skeptical about her chances of winning because they thought the award is geared toward newspaper writers. “I don’t know that I would have put her up for it if I didn’t think there was a shot,” Kelly said. “But honestly, I kind of thought long shot a little bit.” When Yong was surprised with the award during class, she said she started freaking out. “I was completely shocked because I didn’t think I had a shot,” she said. Stinger adviser Liz Newman was less surprised. “She’s the kind of kid that deserves this,” she said. Yong will study journalism at the University of Missouri at Columbia in the fall, although she has not chosen which area of journalism she will focus on. “I feel very versatile as a journalist, so I don’t want to lock myself in to any particular type yet,” she said. Yong wants to extend that versatility into her professional career. “I really want to try different kinds [of media],” she said. “I would like to be able to work at NPR. I’d love to work at Time magazine.”

Conroy introduces bill to dissolve DuPage County forest preserve board 15

had control of the forest preserve, but the county created the separate elected board in 2002 and cut down the number of county board members from 24 to 18, according to the forest preserve’s website. Conroy said eliminating the board of six commissioners and president could save taxpayers more than $500,000 annually by eliminating the board’s salary and insurance costs, which she claims cost up to $77,209.50 per commissioner each year. “With the situation that we are in now financially, every taxpayer dollar is important,” she said. In 2013, Conroy introduced a similar bill that would have let voters decide whether to have the board continue without receiving compensation.

Another bill from former Rep. Dennis Reboletti from the same year would have done the same while dissolving the board in 2016. Under the new bill, the County Board chairman would appoint a fulltime liaison to advise the board on forest preserve issues. DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said while he “very enthusiastically” supported the mission of the forest preserve to protect and care for the land of DuPage, he would be open to a conversation on the best way to go about it. “Rep. Conroy is proposing a different model – different than the old one, different than the current one, so let’s be honest and open-minded about it and take a look at it, just as

A new bill introduced to the state House of Representatives could spell the end of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County Board of Commissioners. On Feb. 26, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, filed House Bill 3099 that would extend the terms of all current board members until 2018, after which their responsibilities would Deb Conroy be transferred to the DuPage County Board. Conroy said the move was about efficiency and saving money for taxpayers while still caring for county natural resources. “When I was first elected two years ago, I started looking at areas where we could save taxpayer dollars, and the forest preserve was one of the first ones,” she said. “In looking into that, I realized it was the only forest preserve board in the state of Illinois that is paid independently in that way – most have stipends or are covered by the county board.” The DuPage County Board had long

long as it protects and preserves the open space and environmental habitats,” he said. Forest preserve commissioner Tim Whelan called the legislation unnecessary and “not very well thoughtthrough” and said there are plenty of other more efficient areas to focus cuts. He said he believed what the County Board did was and should be separate from the tasks of the forest preserve. “Our mission is preservation and acquisition of and preservation of green space ... and the County Board is more about the concepts of economic development and development,” he said. “Each government agency is different from the beginning – that was the motivation for dividing the boards up in the first place.” Board members frequently meet with staff, constituents and stakeholders outside official board meetings, Whelan said, providing more perspectives to issues. “I feel that to be able to serve the taxpayers of DuPage County from a forest preserve perspective, it is better to have our own board and discuss these issues every day, every week, so we can assure we have our preservation,” he said.

“Our mission is preservation and acquisition of and preservation of green space ... and the County Board is more about the concepts of economic development and development. Each government agency is different from the beginning – that was the motivation for dividing the boards up in the first place.”

Barbecued pulled pork provides a decadent touch to an order of BHB mac and cheese. Bacon and avocado add big flavor to the salmon BLT sandwich, accom- crispiness. Meanwhile, the pork was very tender. We both panied by sweet potato fries. To start, my friend ordered the house BHB Honey Girl beer, which is an American Hefeweizen that was tasty and, importantly for a wheat beer, not too sweet. There are several BHB beers, and a fairly wide selection of other craft and domestic brews available

on tap. For the appetizer, we chose the BHB smothered fries, which feature crispy fries, pulled pork, giardiniera and Monterey Jack cheese. I’m typically quite picky with fries, but these had a coating that captured the desired

agreed the giardiniera could have used more heat, but my friend thought the appetizer was a standout. Next up, I went with the BHB BBQ pulled pork mac and cheese. Not only is the name a mouthful, but it’s a big portion. Normally, I’m a purist when it comes to mac

and cheese, but the bacon and pulled pork were surprisingly good additions. First off, the mac and cheese had the proper creaminess, gooeyness and mix of colors to show that there are multiple cheeses at work. Throw in the crispy, crunchy bacon and that would have made for a great meal on its own. The pork was good, again, but the sweet barbecue sauce didn’t quite sync with the savory cheese for my personal taste. So, I ended up basically eating bacon mac and cheese with a side of pulled pork, and enjoyed both that way. My friend ordered a salmon BLT sandwich with sweet potato fries and also had positive things to report. The bacon and avocado flavorfully complemented the mild fish to make for another winner. The menu has a wide variety from barbecue to pasta dishes, seafood, salads, sandwiches and pizza flatbreads, more than deserving of another run around the pub’s culinary bases.

BERWYN – Heading to a restaurant named after one of my childhood heroes was an exciting prospect, and the food at Big Hurt Brewhouse did not disappoint. Athletes breaking into the restaurant business is nothing new. In many cases, their involvement varies, determining how large a role they play in the success of the enterprise. A big name on the front of the building is nice, but that alone won’t keep a restaurant afloat. I am pleased to report Frank Thomas was in the building – and left this White Sox fan a bit stunned at the sight of the Hall of Famer. He runs an attractive restaurant/ sports bar that provided my companion and me with good food and drink. A scattering of Frank Thomas memorabilia brings back some cherished memories, capped by an impressive replica of the statue of the slugger displayed at the ballpark. The pub is on the southwest corner of Cermak Road and Oak Park Avenue in Berwyn, which means tons of eyeballs get to see the bright white lights that say Big Hurt Brewhouse on a daily basis. Upon entering, my immediate reaction was: “Ooo, this is kind of fancy.” My casual tastes can just as easily be satisfied in a dive bar or a diner, but it does feel good to walk into a place that puts some effort into the ambience. The pub is housed in a historic bank building, and still sports a vault, as well as the elaborately embellished dome that draws the eye upward like a baseball headed to the stratosphere. It’s definitely fancy enough for a date night but remains a casual sports bar perfect to watch a game with some friends over drinks. There are enough TVs that you will never have a bad view if you want to catch a game. And the staff the night I visited was on the ball enough to pipe in the audio right at the Blackhawks game’s first faceoff.

Rafferty, Red Devils rise to occasion By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com AURORA – Matt Rafferty put every inch of his 6-foot-8 frame to good use Tuesday night. The Hinsdale Central senior did a lot of heavy lifting and helped carry the Red Devils to an 88-67 boys basketball win against Metea Valley in a semifinal game of the Class 4A East Aurora sectional. Rafferty hit his first 11 shots, including all nine in the first half, tallied 27 points by halftime and finished with a game-high 40 points. “I was in a groove. I tried to stay in rhythm throughout both halves and it worked out well,” Rafferty said. “I took the shots offered to me and knocked them down, and was able to keep it going.” Rafferty did his part in helping the Red Devils (23-6) gain a 42-38 halftime lead, then helped them grab the lead for good in the second half. Central trailed 46-45 when Metea’s Dei’Ron Delarosa converted a threepoint play with 6:02 left in the third, but moments later, Delarosa was called for a technical foul after a Red Devil turnover. Rafferty hit both free throws, scored on a turnaround jumper on the ensuing possession and followed with a 3-pointer, and the Mustangs (18-13) never led again. “There were a ton of shots going in during the first half and it was a bit of a shootout, but whenever we needed a bucket Matt was right there for us,” senior Thomas Ives said. “Whenever we needed a big three, he hit it. Whenever we needed to go inside, he was there. And whenever someone else was open, he was the one making the pass. He played awesome.” Central head coach Nick Latorre echoed Ives’ assessment of Rafferty’s play. Rafferty finished 14-of-18 from the field (4-of-4 on 3-pointers) and was 8-of8 from the free-throw line. “He kept us in it, and once we were able to settle in and pick it up defensively that was kind of the difference in the game,” Latorre said. “I don’t know if we fed off him as much as we kind of got behind him and skitched along behind him for a while.” With the win, the Red Devils move

No step is bigger than the next one.” Central won its second consecutive regional title to get the sectional, the fifth time in recent history the Red Devils have won back-to-back regional titles. The other occurrences were 2006 and 2007, 1996 and 1997, 1974 and 1975, and 1971 and 1972. “I think it starts with coach Latorre,” Rafferty said. “He came in and did a great job of turning the program around again, and we’re in a groove Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com now and got our confidence back so we’re looking forward to the next Hinsdale Central’s Thomas Ives puts up a shot Tuesday in an 88-67 sectional semifinal game. Hinsdale Central’s Rush leaves legacy of success

Rush’s four favorites

jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Four years at Hinsdale Central flew by for Gabrielle Rush. The standout basketball player leaves the program as a four-year varsity player with several records and the satisfaction that her final season in a Red Devil uniform was the best yet. “This year was such a great year because we had so much success as a team,” Rush said. “That’s what made it special.” With Rush leading the way, the Red Devils won their first regional title since the 2009-10 season, which is just part of the reason Rush is the Suburban Life all-area team MVP. “Not only is she one of the best players I’ve coached, but she’s very coachable,” Central head coach Tom McKenna said. Rush’s willingness to accept coaching stems in part from her family dynamic. The fourth of five children in a family that loves basketball, she has always striven to be the best among her siblings. “We all played basketball all our lives, and it made me push to get better,” Rush said.

Hinsdale Central’s Gabrielle Rush drives hard to the basket Feb. 3 in a game against Lyons Township. Rush, a senior, is Central’s all-time leading scorer and helped guide the Red Devils to a regional title this season. “With my siblings, no one has a high ego because we all play against each other. “I don’t know where I’d be without my family. My parents could not be more supportive, starting with driving me around to AAU practices starting in second grade. They’ve been there to support

me the whole time.” The years spent playing travel ball, with the Bulls/Sox Academy, Lady Lightning and Midwest Elite, helped her develop into a stellar player by the time she got to Central. A four-time member of the Suburban Life all-area team, Rush averaged more than 20 points

per game each of the past three seasons. She will leave the school as the all-time leading scorer for the program with 2,322 points. She is also the record-holder for points in a season (772), total 3-pointers (304), threes in a season (98), total rebounds (743) and rebounds in a season (362).

She averaged a double-double (24.9 points and 11.7 rebounds) this season, but one of her biggest accomplishments was guiding a team that received key contributions from several varsity newcomers, including five sophomores. “I think I was a little anxious because I remember what it was like to be the young one on the team,” Rush said. “I was anxious to see what it was like with me being a senior. I feel I was able to help them out. I tried to be there for them and be a mentor for them.” Despite some nerves in taking on a leadership role, McKenna said Rush was a success. And such a success that it will set up Central for more after Rush graduates. “The legacy behind her numbers is her work ethic,” McKenna said. “The kids see her working out before games, after games. They see what it takes to become successful.”

Hinsdale South hopes workouts will help boys basketball By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DARIEN – It was an up and down season for Brian Kern and his Hinsdale South boys basketball teammates. They should expect more of the same before next season tips off as repetitions in the weight room seem to be the main area of focus in the offseason. “Definitely we need to get in the weight room, get more strength and conditioning,” Kern said. “Hopefully we can put some work in during the offseason and we’ll see how it goes.” The Hornets finished with a 15-15 record this season, and for the second year in a row

saw the season end in a regional semifinal game against Hinsdale Central. Yet South did win against Downers Grove South in a regional quarterfinal and could be in line for more success next year as just one varsity player, senior guard Tommy Gumbus, is set to leave the team. “We’ve got 11 juniors and a sophomore that played varsity this year and I think we have a bright future with this group,” head coach Brett Moore said. Big man Barret Benson, who has several big-time Division I scholarship offers, will return. Kern and forward Sean McCormack as well as fellow starters Freddy Reetz, Zach Duffy and Martynas Matevicius all played significant

minutes this season. Xavier Fobbs earned more minutes as the season progressed and Karol Lipiszko held his own in a late-season call up from the sophomore team. A year of experience playing together will benefit the Hornets, as will Moore’s plans to ramp up offseason workouts. “I think they realize how much their bodies mean to this game; they’ve got to make a dedicated push in the weight room,” Moore said. “Playing basketball is the least important thing they’re going to do between now and next season. Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com Playing summer basketball, AAU – great stuff. But what’s Hinsdale South’s Martynas Matevicius passes the ball March 2 during most important is the … in- a regional playoff game against Downers Grove South. Matevicius is dividual work in the weight one of 12 players that could return for the Hornets next season.
