First, it is not the IRS. The IRS never calls you; they only send letters/notices about problems with your tax filing – either a correction to ES tax paid or missing income or questions about a deduction – or notices to nonfilers. The term for these people who call is “pfishing”. They tell you that you owe money, you should send it in immediately or they try to scare you about what will happen if you ignore their warning. Many people do send money – and get scammed – over $14 million reported since October 2013. If you get a call, hang up immediately and know that it is NOT the IRS!! STRAUSS TAX SERVICE can prepare your IRS and IL taxes on our secure software. We can answer your questions, help you with tax strategies for 2015 and save you money. There also will be food and entertainment, including an appearance by members of the Chicago Thunder semipro football team. Westlund is calling the event her “Recycled Life.” “It’s the ultimate gift that someone gave me,” she said. Her health problems started in 2002 when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. The radiation treatments
she went through scarred her heart valve, and she faced end stage heart failure a decade later. She went through blood transfusions and multiple surgeries, during which her heart stopped and had to be restarted on multiple occasions. She said the first time she was told after a surgery that she had been resuscitated, she was horrified. Eventually, she became desensitized to it. Westlund received a donor heart in October 2013 and, since then, has been thankful to be alive. “Luckily, at this point, I have more good days than bad days,” she said. “You’re always glad for even the bad days.” Westlund plans to organize future Recycled Life events in Oak Lawn and Naperville. Recycled Life also will have teams participating in the Walk the Walk for Autism in April and a Relay for Life event in May. Westlund said she would like to make Recycled Life a nonprofit organization so she can continue to host events such as the one this weekend. “There’s a lot of good we can do in this world,” she said. WILLOWBROOK – Gwendolyn Westlund is not afraid to talk in detail about her experiences with her heart transplant. Being brought back from death multiple times has helped her gain that courage. “It makes you want to live your moment better and get other people involved in helping other people,” she said. The 33-year-old Willowbrook resident will try to bring more awareness to organ donation during a blood drive and educational event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Westmont High School, 909 Oakwood Drive. LifeSource will run the drive, while representatives from Be The Match will teach about bone marrow donation and testing. Medical professionals will be on hand to talk about organ donation. The school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions group will act as guides for the event. Westlund said donating blood is an easy way to help others. “Isn’t that nice that you can take a nap and save a life at the same time?” she said. “I think it’s freaking awesome.”

Hinsdale South student Marissa Dupont started an online petition for Manley to resign as a member of the board after she said Manley harassed her to the point of tears as she was handing out campaign fliers on the Hinsdale South campus March 12. Dupont returned to the campus the following night and was confronted by Manley again. The student’s petition had more than 1,200 supporters Wednesday.
At the first school board meeting since the incident occurred, community members took the podium during the public comment portion of the meeting and complained about Manley’s alleged interaction with the student, the alleged online comments of conservative slate campaign manager Robert Bland and new rules that will limit campaigning on student property.

HINSDALE – The April 7 election ballot will include two advisory questions posed by Hinsdale Township High School District 86 relating to its teachers and staff. The first question is whether the Board of Education should petition the Illinois General Assembly to change state labor laws to prohibit school district employees from striking. The second is whether student and parent assessments and classroom attendance should be part of teacher performance evaluations. As advisory questions, the district is not required to act on the results of either questions. The teacher strike question has come up because of a threatened strike by teachers during contract negotiations with the district last summer. Board President Richard Skoda said
the board has chosen to put these free advisory referendums on the ballot in order to know what the public thinks about important issues concerning the district. He said he does not know why more boards do not use more advisory questions on election ballots. “I think the voters really like voting on issues of substance,” he said. When the board voted 4-2 in January to put the questions on the ballot, board member Jennifer Planson said she voted against the questions because she felt they were a waste of time and energy. She said during the meeting the board was elected to make such decisions on the public’s behalf, and, on the issue of teachers striking, the board already knows the public was against it. Skoda said he would be voting yes on both questions, but the board will inform state legislators for area of the public opinion on the strike question regardless of whether it is what a majority of the board agrees with.

Short-term housing lets working homeless keep focus on jobs
OUR VIEW
One woman recently shared her situation at a DuPagePads focus group for participants who are employed. “I worked the late shift which just ended at 4 a.m. The overnight sites close at 7 a.m. and I have nowhere to sleep. I try to nap where I can.” To address this problem, COMMUNITY DuPagePads has developed VOICE a new pilot program. The Carol Short-Term Housing Employment Program is for those Simler who are homeless and working the late night shifts. “I know firsthand how In addition to housing, this program accelerates the path to important this program is stability by requiring savings and want to be successful accounts to re-establish credit and save for security deposits. so that you can continue Individuals meet regularly with a job coach and case manager to help others.” to address workplace topics and Tom develop a plan for housing. Machinist and Short-Term Housing When an individual who is homeless obtains employEmployment Program participant ment, it is a pivotal moment in their life. Providing shortterm housing and support services allows people to have the ability to focus on their employment, without the distraction of not knowing where they will sleep, if they will have a shower and a place to keep their belongings. This program is already making a difference for Tom, a machinist whose company closed several months ago. Tom found himself unemployed and eventually homeless. He was able to find a new job; unfortunately they only had late-night shifts available. Tom recognized what challenges this shift would bring, but he took the job anyway. Working the 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. shift, he would often sleep in his car. Remarkably he has never missed a day of work or been late for the start of his shift. Our staff saw his determination and enrolled him as the first participant in the new pilot program. He shared, “I’m so grateful for this temporary home. I know firsthand how important this program is and want to be successful so that you can continue to help others. ... Now for the first time in months, I can finally say I slept soundly after work.”
If you’re one of those people who gets annoyed every election cycle at the admonishments to go out and vote because you don’t care, you’re never going to vote and you don’t see why everyone keeps harping on it, then fear not – this message is not for you. This message is for the people who vote sometimes, or the people who know they should vote but can’t seem to get around to it. This is for the people who are most likely to vote when there’s a presidential or gubernatorial race at the top of the ticket. This is for the people who’d vote if it was an app on their smartphones but don’t want to go to the trouble of seeking out a polling place. If you fit into any of those categories, then you need to vote between now and April 7 because this is the election where your vote matters most. (Early voting concludes April 4, and the 7th is Election Day, so don’t try to vote on the 5th or 6th). Municipal elections combine small constituencies with extremely low turnout, meaning races for positions that control tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of tax dollars often turn on a few hundred votes … or a few dozen votes … sometimes even one vote. Sometimes, even, a coin flip. For in-
Your vote has never been easier or more powerful stance, in 2013, a Stickney Village Board trustee was chosen by a coin flip because the candidates tied with 573 votes apiece. In the 2012 presidential election, on the other hand, more than 129 million votes were cast. So you can see where being one vote out of 1,146 can have a much bigger impact. If you’re not happy with your local schools, or local services, or the park district, or the library in your town, check and see if there’s anyone up for election on one of those boards. For the higher profile races, we’ve got questions and responses from the candidates about their positions online at www.mysuburbanlife. com/election-central. You can find the full ballot at the County Clerk’s website. If the importance of your vote isn’t enough to convince you, consider that it’s easier than ever to vote. Sure, a smartphone app would be great (if potentially insecure), but thanks to early voting, you don’t necessarily need to stand in long lines. Pick an off-peak day and time during the early voting period and you might be able to walk in and cast your ballot without any wait at all. Then you can sit back and watch everyone else hyperventilate knowing you’ve already done your civic duty.

rules. You can go on more streets than I care to mention and see property littered with nothing more than junk. Yards that are in need of being cut and maintained, instead of weeds taller than what should be allowed. Looking at the ordinances on the village website, it plainly states what is not allowable. So why is it that people are not being notified and made to correct such problems? The village will never be what it could be if our officials don’t take charge of such issues. Would you want to purchase a home with the houses next door totally untaken care of? Weeds and litter all over the yards. I have stated just a small amount of what I could say in regards to our code enforcement department.
Pay is too high in Downers Grove Yes, in the village of Downers Grove, I think someone should look into why so many, and I’m talking well over 80 people, are earning more then $100,000. They can’t all possibly be department heads with master’s degrees. This is clearly a whole lot more money than the general public makes and I think someone should research it, especially during these times when there’s so many budget cuts. We need some answers.

Hello, this letter is regarding the letter to the Ayatollah of Iran by 47 Republicans. A letter to the Ayatollah of Iran by 47 Republicans is an act of sedition unparalleled in the history of this country. It shows the extreme actions they are willing to take because of their hate for President Obama. It is shameful that this letter was written and that 47 Republicans signed it in order to undermine our president in this way. This act increases the chance of war in the Middle East, damages the diplomatic interests of our country and hurts all of us.

According to a recent phone survey for the Skoda ticket, the average salary for a District 86 teacher is $121,000. According to the salary schedule, the top salary is $128,000. The only way the average salary for a District 86 teacher could be $121,000 is if over 75 percent of the teachers had over 15 years experience and had a master’s degree plus 60 hours. Even if that was the case, wouldn’t that be the qualities we look for in the teachers of our district? District 86 is one of the top school districts in the nation. Our students deserve the best, most experienced teachers, and those teachers deserved to be paid for that experience.

To the editor: I have been a member of the Clarendon Hills Village Board for the past 12 years. Serving the residents has been an honor and a pleasure for me and I’m very proud of the current state of the village. My last term ends after the upcoming election, and I’m worried about what might happen if residents don’t carefully consider their vote April 7. Will we continue to maintain our AAA credit rating? Will the resident survey continue to show 90 percent of our residents rate the village as good or excellent? Will we continue to strike the appropriate balance between low taxes and excellent services? And most importantly, will we continue to enjoy an honest, open and transparent government? Or will we fall prey to cynical candidates spawned by the same group that is dismantling Hinsdale High School District 86? I strongly urge you to vote for Len Austin, Greg Jordan, Carol Jorissen and Don McGarrah on April 7. You will find information about them and their platform [at] www.myclarendonhills.

Wheaton resident Josh Mueller, who has cerebral palsy, works at a company that helps develop affordable housing for the special-needs population through the Ray Graham Association’s job program. programs are residential, educational, secondary family resources and employment, such as for Mueller. The nonprofit was started more than 60 years ago by a group of parents who had children with developmental disabilities. The mission was to empower those with disabilities, Nagle said. “Everybody has different needs – some benefit from just coming and spending the day with us and some do best living with us,” she said. “We just try to create the best place for each to grow and achieve.”
The organization works with 150 employers in and around DuPage and has 232 people employed since the employment program was revamped five years ago, Nagle said. Hamerik said she was immediately interested in the possibility of hiring someone for clerical work through the program but said the process was just like interviewing any other group employment service with resumes and job coaches. Now, she said, Mueller is an invaluable part of the team, both for his abili-
ties and his expertise on the challenges of living with special needs. “Joshua shined ... he was very personable, we could tell he was going to be terrific with clients that were actually coming into the office,” she said. “At the time when we hired him, we didn’t realize what he could and couldn’t do, but it became really, really obvious that he could do a lot more than scanning and record keeping.” Now, he serves as a testament of what those with special needs can do in and out of the office, Hamerik said. The office has rarely had to make an accommodation for him, and his skills more than make up for the small changes, she said. Mueller, who celebrated his birthday just before he was hired, said the job was the best present he’d ever gotten. “It’s been a great fit – everything’s going perfectly and I’m able to do a lot and connect with the people that work here,” he said.

Like many 23-year-olds, Josh Mueller had trouble finding work. A stint cleaning at McDonald’s wasn’t particularly rewarding for the Wheaton resident, and he quit in March 2013. It took more than a year and a half to find his next one – thanks to the Ray Graham Association. Mueller has cerebral palsy, and even though he no longer needs a walker and has a sharp wit and memory, he has found it hard to find work and other services since he has aged out of most state and federal programs. “I exercised a lot, when it was warm I took some walks,” he said of his post-McDonald’s days. “Most of the time, I was completely bored like anyone would be.” He eventually found work in October 2014 at A. Hamernik & Associates in Downers Grove, which mainly helps develop special-needs affordable housing. He was pointed toward the job through Ray Graham, which works to provide services for nearly 2,000 children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families. Lorri Nagle, chief development officer for the Lisle-based Ray Graham Association, said the organization’s core

Skoda issued a statement via email Tuesday that class sizes would not be increasing and the district’s slight reduction of staff was based on administration recommendations because of the enrollment decrease at Hinsdale South. The board approved a total of 380.3 full-time equivalents for staffing next year, a reduction of 2.3 full-time equivalents, according to Skoda, by a vote of 4-2. Her main emphasis on school activities are those that do community work. She is not just a participant but an active planner and student who works. Her endless work with Key Club and Habitat for Humanity are evidence of her dedication to civic minded causes. Nominated by Ellen Jacobson, School Counselor: “ I have known Shivali Patel for her entire career at Hinsdale South as her School Counselor, Ambassador Club Sponsor, and Class of 2015 Sponsor, and I can honestly say that I am thrilled to be writing in recommendation of her. When I meet eighth graders to register them before their Freshman year, they are normally reserved, quiet, and a little nervous. Shivali was so memorable to me because she exuded energy and was so obviously excited about all of the opportunity available to her at Hinsdale South she could barely sit still or stile her questions. This attitude has continued; Shivali has brought this energy and positive inluence to everything she does. In the time I have known her, she has never uttered a negative word in my presence or passed up an opportunity to make someone feel happier or reassured. As a student at Hinsdale South, it is hard to ind an equal. Shivali has continually taken on academic and social challenges and surmounted them. She professes to be a bookworm and nerd who blossomed here and can now call herself a carpenter on our drama tech crew, and even Captain of the State level Badminton team. Shivali says she had to learn to be outgoing and didn’t have much conidence growing up. This makes me smile, because it is a perfect example of her sweet and humble nature. The list of her other school activities would not be believable if I hadn’t witnessed much of her involvement. She is a blur before and after school as she makes her many meetings always with a smile on her face and with lots to contribute. As her sponsor for two clubs I have seen her in action making decisions, decorating for dances, and greeting new students. To say she is a breath of fresh air is an understatement.”

She was selected as a student leader because of her ability to role model the principles of the Mustang Way: being a respectful, responsible, and engaged student. Eileen focuses on doing what’s right, not because she wants to win awards or achieve notoriety, but because she is an individual with strong morals and values who wants to positively impact the world around her. She strives for success so that she can take pride in being herself, the result of which is gaining the utmost respect from those who are lucky enough to know her. Eileen’s teachers see her as an intent listener who is able to hear and conceptualize various viewpoints, and then respectfully and thoughtfully present her own. She is an unassuming student who respects and appreciates diversity, and attempts to see the world from various points-of-view. Eileen does not typically draw attention to all of her strengths and accomplishments, which is why I believe that she deserves this recognition. She has made a positive impact at DGS, and I am excited for her future and all the great things that are undoubtedly in store for her!”

we went with tried-and-true Italian traditions – tiramisu and cannoli. The ladyfingers in the tiramisu imparted the coffee liqueur essence without being drenched, and a chocolate drizzle added to the delicate sweet treat. The cannoli’s delectable filling was surrounded by a slightly sweet and crisp shell, while crushed pistachios and an artful flourish of chocolate syrup added to the knockout flavor. Throughout our meal, the service was attentive without being intrusive. Our plates quickly were taken away, our water glasses remained filled, and our leftovers were packaged promptly. Our server and busser always arrived at the table with a smile. La Notte Due has lunch portions of its dinner menu available five days a week, and also offers a catering menu for anyone looking to bring the delicious taste of Italy home for a family party.

DARIEN – The phrase “la notte due” roughly translates from Italian as “the second night,” but La Notte Due could easily rank a first place in the local Italian dining pantheon. My date and I arrived for an early weekend dinner recently and were promptly seated in the elegant yet comfortable dining room, where bread materialized at our table. The Darien restaurant’s modern interior is warmed by wood floors and the paintings of Italian scenery adorning the walls. White tablecloths also enhance the surroundings. The attentive service that started with our arrival continued, with our water glasses quickly filled before our server came to take our drink order. Goal Setting to reach your full potential Everyone has a starting point. Whether you are a novice or experienced athlete, we all are looking to improve in one way or another. That improvement might be to lose weight, to place in your age group in a local or national race, or simply to improve your fitness. Setting goals will give you motivation and boosts self-confidence. Having those goals, adjusting, and learning how to set them can help you achieve them. Ryan Giuliano started from not knowing how to swim in college to becoming the top ranked amateur Ironman athlete in the world in 2015. It has required him to set many short term and long term goals and keeping motivated and disciplined to attain them. He will discuss how to plan goals out and follow through to meet them.

5 WINTER SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
Central swimming, Josh King titles top list By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com With boys basketball state titles handed out Saturday, the high school winter sports season is officially in the books. Now is the perfect time to reflect on the accomplishments of Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South athletes, who made their names known throughout the winter.
1. Central surprises with swimming title The week before the state meet, Hinsdale Central’s boys swimming and diving team finished second at the sectional meet. It turns out the Red Devils were just saving their best for last as seven swimmers earned allstate finishes and state medals. Franco Reyes was an individual champion in the 100-yard butterfly, and Central locked up the title when William Bowater, Brian Powell, Adam Pircon and Brian Portland placed fourth in the 400 freestyle relay in the final race of the state meet. The Red Devils earned their 18th state title overall and first championship since 1989. Quotable: “This is what we’ve been training for and all of us couldn’t be more happy about it. We swam out of our minds. I’m just ecstatic,” Adam Pircon said.
2. Josh King a wrestling champion Two previous trips to the state wrestling meet ended without a medal for Josh King. The Hinsdale South junior made up for those misses in a big way this season as he brought home the 220-pound title from the Class 3A meet. King won 9-6 in the title bout for the final win in a 49-1 season. King, who dominated with two falls and an 11-2 win to reach the title match, became South’s fifth wrestling state champion and first since Sebastian Pique in 2011. Quotable: “It’s not really something you can describe. It’s something you work at all your life since I was four when I started. ... Knowing you’re the one who came out on top and won it is pretty special,” Josh King said.

She was fifth on uneven bars (9.5250), tied for seventh on floor exercise (9.450) and finished in a tie for fifth in the all-around (37.20). Nowak was South’s first state medalist in the all-around since 1994. Quotable: “Absolutely I’m pleased. That was my goal at the beginning of the season, making the finals. It’s really nice that my hard work paid off,” Maddie Nowak said.
3. Red Devils with a run to remember It’s easier said that done to win a regional title in boys basketball. Hinsdale Central won its second straight regional title this spring, just one moment in what turned out to be a memorable playoff run. The Red Devils won against rival Hinsdale South to start the playoffs, then topped Downers Grove North for the regional title. Matt Rafferty scored a career-high 40 points in a sectional semifinal win against Metea Valley, a victory that sent Central to the sectional championship game for the first time since 1997. The season ended with a loss against West Aurora, but the Red Devils won 23 games for the second straight season in addition to back-to-back regional titles. Quotable: “I couldn’t ask for a better group of guys to coach. Everything they did on and off the court was spectacular. ... I can’t say enough nice things about what they’ve brought to our team and our program,” coach Nick Latorre said.
4. Maddie Nowak nabs state medals Maddie Nowak’s return to high school gymnastics after a season away was nothing but a success.
5. Allen, Edmond represent HC at state Matt Allen and Juwan Edmond made their names known at the state wrestling tournament. Further up the field Margaret Tamm, who made an impact with five goals after a call-up from the sophomore team late last season, is back, as is three-year varsity starter and UIC commit Jenny Saviski. At the top of the attack Alix McArthur and Sydney Griffin, returning to high school soccer after focusing on club ball, could give the Red Devils an explosive offense to complement their strong defense. “Alix had a hat trick in her first game, and finding success early bodes well for her future,” Smith said. “Sydney is going to be a Division I player, and she is a very seasoned, quality attacking player. She brings another dynamic player to our offense.”

HINSDALE – The faces may change, but the goals remain the same for Hinsdale Central’s girls soccer team. Though a slew of seniors, including standout midfielder Alison Cerny, defenders Lily Chetosky and Christa Kuhlman, and keeper Riley Glenn, have moved on, the Red Devils still have their sights set on winning a West Suburban Silver title, and more. “One thing we pride ourselves on is making sure our style of play is where it needs to be and that we’re being dangerous and creative offensively,” head coach Michael Smith said. “After that, we want to win conference, and we know the Silver is tough. From there, we want to be as prepared as possible for the postseason.” Kaitlyn Livingston, Maeve McLaughlin and Erin Smith return to the defense to play in front of Katy Coseglia, who takes over as the primary keeper after splitting time with Glenn last season. “She shared time last year, but we’re excited to have her back,” Smith said. “It’s her team now, and she’s a phenomenal competitor.”

DARIEN – It’s a new era for Hinsdale South’s girls soccer team in more ways than one. Jen Belmonte, an assistant coach under Pat Wolf the last nine seasons, takes over as the new head coach this spring. On the field, Belmonte inherits a young team that will look drastically different than the one that went to the state finals for the first time in 24 years last season and captured the program’s first state trophy as it finished fourth in Class 2A. Any talk of replicating the kind of success of last year’s squad has been minimal. “Not a lot at all, simply because this group is young,” Belmonte said. “The main group that got us there last year is essentially gone. This group knows it will not be an easy task [to get to state].” Madison Cebular and Dakota Dapkus return to anchor the defense, and Jean Cote is back in net. Only a handful of starters return to the team, and among the losses are defenders Sarah Warren [all-state last year] and Elisabetta Bifero [all-sectional]. Mary Clare Ladd is also gone on defense. Nicole Kilrea [defense], Tess Sobol [midfield] and Courtney Cavalli [forward] also saw extensive playing time last season. What the Hornets lack in experience they make up for in overall talent. “Our biggest strength is depth. I have a lot of talented players who can step in and play multiple positions,” Belmonte said.
