the other competition winners at this year’s upcoming expo. “I’m definitely excited to go,” Laniosz said. “What I’m looking forward to most is exposing myself to the housewares business and learning how to communicate design better – how to talk the design language.” After an industrial design class introduced Laniosz to the competition, he was motivated to create his product after learning how much cooking oil people consume each year. Laniosz cites 163.9 million metric tons of vegetable oils as being consumed globally in 2013 in his contest design proposal. “The goal of the product of is to diminish excessive consumption of oil,” Laniosz said. Oil can be a healthy alternative to butter when cooking but only in moderation, Laniosz said. His product can solve the problem of excessive oil consumption

by allowing for consumers to more efficiently moderate their oil use. Olie works by dispensing cooking oil from a refillable container through a pressurized X valve, much like those found at the ends of squeezable ketchup bottles. Olie dispenses oil at 1 teaspoon increments into a small chamber with a bristle attachment. The bristles then spread the oil around the pan or another hot surface without the user having to get too close to the heat. As one might imagine, however, coming up with this design wasn’t an easy feat. His concept took many forms until he found one that worked. “When I first started this project, I remember using these really large milk bags, like the kind you’d find in a cafeteria,” Laniosz said. Those previous designs were eliminated after failures in some way, he said. “It was either uncomfortable, it didn’t solve my problem or it solved the problem and created new ones. The final design was one where I could say, ‘I think I did my job,’” Laniosz said. Laniosz said he is satisfied with his final design and has learned a lot from the competition. “I think in order to be a good designer you should be able to work through a lot of different mediums,” he said. “You want to see your work manifested in many different types of products.” And although all the ideas won’t work out, inspiration sometimes comes from the strangest places. “Don’t rule out weird ideas too quickly,” he said.

Nitrite is winning word in county spelling bee Student at Butler in Oak Brook heads to Scripp’s national contest in Washington, D.C. By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Perlustrate. ed Regional Superintendent Darlene Ruscitti in a news release after the event. “It was very clear to me that the students put in a lot of hard work and studying to prepare for the spelling bee. All of the contestants are to be congratulated for getting to this level of competition.” Eigth-grader Chris Chang of Oak Brook’s Butler Junior High School was the last speller standing out of the best spellers from 69 public and private schools after 12 long rounds. His winning word was nitrite, a molecule made up of two oxygen atoms and a nitrogen atom. All participants in the bee received a Barnes & Noble gift card from the DuPage Regional Office of Education. Although it was a scary experience, Chris said, he believed he thought he had a good chance of winning as he had previously competed in a national spelling bee in Singapore when he lived there in sixth grade. The word he missed then? Narcissistic. “People always told me I was a bit of a grammar Nazi,” he said after his win, a fact his younger sister corroborated.

The Big Read starts a new chapter By KELLI MURRAY
Know more
editorial@mysuburbanlife.com DOWNERS GROVE – For the past 10 years, the libraries of Downers Grove, Woodridge, Hinsdale, La Grange, La Grange Park, Clarendon Hills, Lisle, Indian Prairie and Thomas Ford have joined forces for an annual reading event. Formerly The Big Read, it is now ReDiscover, and it offers a vast array of programming for patrons of all ages with a focus on one theme, instead of just one book, as was done in the past. Choosing a single book for a large population with varied ages, genders and genre preferences could be challenging, said Melissa Doornbos, Downers Grove Public Library public relations manager. “It is very hard to pick a book to have a wide appeal and offer a program for it,” she said. “We decided that with 10 years under our belt, it was time to do something different.” The change to one theme was a calculated decision by the library directors to broaden the scope of programming, according to Patti Naisbitt, Woodridge Public Library public relations and pro-
To register for ReDiscover programs or for information, go to re-discover.org. Not interested in reading a book but still interested in celebrating home? The “Events by Topic” drop-down features 12 topics including cooking, movies, music, design and decor, gardening and pets. “What is exciting for me is that celebrating home can be so wide and encompassing,” Hinsdale reference librarian Jo Ann Schusterich said. “We’ve also incorporated homelessness, so people can learn about that. It is a great opportunity to information share with the community.” ReDiscover is offered just once per year to residents, but it is a year-round process for the libraries to plan. “The staff will meet after this program to see what we need to do for next year,” Schusterich said. “We do a lot of planning behind the scenes, and we are lucky we have great staff as part of the planning group. They take on responsibility for programs at their own libraries, but also for ReDiscover.”

Area library patrons are feeling French after reading “The Paris Wife” by Paula McLain and attending an author event during The Big Read in 2012. gram coordinator. “[Library directors] thought if we switched from a book to a theme it would give them more freedom in choosing good programming,” Naisbitt said. “The book discussions are always well attended, but now they are not locked to one book. So we can have more categories in programs, and [patrons] can go to book discussions at their own library or another library.” This year, the focus is celebrating home. Musical performances, lectures, book discussions and cooking demos
will be available for children, teens and adults. Programs are free to patrons. Event registration opened Monday at re-discover.org. To find a listing of the eight books related to celebrating home, see the “Books” tab, which opens to a list of titles ranging from “The House of Sky” by Ivan Doig to “Howards End” by E.M. Forster. Book discussion guides are also available under the tab. Additionally, there are “For Teens” and “For Kids” tabs that have their own age-appropriate books.

Cuts would put shelter services in jeopardy The kids in our emergency shelter recently made valentines for Gov. Bruce Rauner that sent a painful message, “Where would they go if there wasn’t a Family Shelter Service?” The moms willingly volunteered their kids for the project when they learned that Family Shelter Service, along with other social service organizations, likely will face major COMMUNITY funding cuts from the state of VOICE Illinois this year. Maureen When the kids arrived, they were eager to help in McGuire the effort and excitedly went to work. Even the youngest ones seemed to sense the urgency of their mission. When their creations were complete, their art was remarkable … their words profound. But how long would their enthusiasm last if they continued to live in a violent household? How could their talents be nurtured in a home where they walked on eggshells, fearing the always unpredictable violence. One child said it best in her valentine, “I like shelter because I feel safe when I go to sleep at night. I am away from all the bad stuff.” Family Shelter Service has been helping children like these for 39 years. Children who were living under the threat of violence daily. But what if Family Shelter Service wasn’t there? Nearly 12,000 calls to our hotline each year would go unanswered. Approximately 240 women and children would have no shelter from the violence in their homes. Almost 1,100 people would not have a court advocate by their side when they need an order of protection. At Family Shelter Service, these families find a bridge to safer futures. Their needs are short term: a chance to get back on their feet and plan for a safer future. With nowhere to go, a short-term problem becomes a chronic one. Family Shelter Service is part of a vital network of services throughout DuPage that are dedicated to helping those whom are most vulnerable. These social service organizations are the fabric of this community, they are where we volunteer our time and the causes we support. They are the source of service projects where our children learn what it means to give back. Through our commitment to community, we help to heal others while at the same time giving ourselves a sense of belonging – and we offer each child the opportunity to live free of violence so they can grow to their full potential. If you would like to learn about these funding cuts and how you can add your voice, please visit www.familyshelterservice.org.

OUR VIEW
Transparency fight is renewed in Springfield Here we go again. Some lawmakers in Springfield again are taking aim at making government less transparent. Republican state Rep. Joe Sosnowski of Rockford has filed House Bill 261. If passed, it would end the publication of all public notices in newspapers in favor of government websites. The legislation states when a governmental unit is required to provide notice by publication in a newspaper by law, order of court or contract, the governmental unit may publish the notice on an official government website instead of in a newspaper. You might recall a similar assault of transparency occurred in 2011, when a similar bill was filed. It was unsuccessful. Proponents of the bill say it would save governments money. The trade off might seem sensible, but a closer look exposes the legislation for what it is: a stealthy assault on open government under the guise of saving money. Newspapers, of course, have a vested interest in this matter: The bill would take revenue from most newspapers. For decades, however, public notices have been printed in newspapers for a good reason: to provide the greatest verifiable public exposure for the money spent. (Public notices are billed at a discounted ad rate, by the way). The audience provided by a local newspaper dwarfs the number of readers on a local governmental website. The legislation’s flaws become more apparent with the realization many people still don’t use or have
access to the Internet, especially the poor, the elderly, minorities and the disabled. Ample proof exists that local governments blatantly disregard the law when it comes to posting information online. A recent audit conducted by the Citizens Advocacy Center studied more than 750 public body websites in Illinois. In cases where local governments already are required by law to post information on their websites, the compliance rates were abysmal. Only 73 percent complied with posting notice of upcoming meetings, a mere 57 percent complied with posting proposed meeting agendas and less than half – 48 percent – complied with posting approved meeting minutes. And remember, Illinois has an excessive number of taxing bodies. Citizens would have to check each one to monitor legal ads, which provide notice of such things as public meetings, budget hearings and government expenditures. That’s much less efficient for the public than having a one-stop source for public notices – the local newspaper. For people who use the Internet, Illinois newspapers (including this one) already offer a free, online public notice service. Visit www. publicnoticeillinois.com/ to search for public notices from this community and many others. HB 261 is sitting in the House Counties & Township Committee. That’s where it should die. The bill is a risky step backward for the interests of open, honest, above board government. In Illinois, it’s absolutely the wrong step to take.

While reading the letter from 15-yearold Abby in her quest to protect the Earth from plastic bags, her statement, “Recycling puts all the responsibility on me,” struck me with another sad reality that many of our young people are not being taught that yes, the responsibility does get put on you as a responsible person. If it was that easy to take care of the earth by banning or charging for plastic bags, Upset with COD officials why not ban/charge/tax every single I was just reading the article on item that you see along the road (cans, “College of DuPage officials respond to newspapers, straws, etc.)? radio station fraud.” It seems to me that they’re putting quite a spin on this. One What’s the deal with Twitter? What is going on with everyone talking thing they seem to feel is because the percentage, when you figure it that way, about Twitter? Everyone is always is so low when it comes to the cost that “hashtag this” and “retweet that.” My it’s insignificant. Maybe I’m not reading nephew even tweets his pet peeves this article correctly, but it surely seems every week. I know I sound like an old to me that the COD officials don’t regard crank when I say this, but I think it’s all the taxpayers at all. I’m really upset right pretty silly. now.

Second, it’s a health hazard. Diseases are spread, and rats eat waste as a protein source. Prevent what helped create Chicago’s top rat population.
Sidewalks a waste of money
Park space is more valuable than presidential library plan
Grandiose visions unwanted
By what authority can the Chicago Park District give away 20 acres of parkland so that the presidential library can be built next to the University of Chicago campus? Has anyone asked the residents of the area if they want their park to be given away? How many of those residents will visit the new library more than once a year, if at all? And at the same time, they will lose a valuable resource for weekend family gatherings and other leisure activities. And let’s hope that none of us, city of Chicago or state of Illinois, are taxed even one cent to support someone’s ego.
We have been living on our block of 60th Place [in Downers Grove] for over 40 years. We personally see no outsiders walk our street. If sidewalks are installed, who would use them? The addition of sidewalks would be a waste of money and will destroy Clyde Country Estates. Whether it’s the luxury condo monstrosity on Maple [Avenue] or forcing Clyde Estates homeowners to tolerate the removal of their mature trees to accommodate unwanted sidewalks, the bureaucrats in the Downers Grove government can’t seem to realize that their grandiose visions of how the world should look may not be accepted by those who actually must live in it. Hey, village planners, get real. If the residents desire the destruction of historic homes and their replacement with weird apartment buildings or ripping out their shade trees in favor of more concrete, they will tell you this.

Kudos are in order for third-grade teacher Mary Jo Borse at Pleasantdale Elementary School for coming up with that cursive writing club. What a great idea. These kids have too much pressure on them these days for test scores and things. It’s really real estate and politicians that have taken a lot of the fun out of school. So way to go Pleasantdale for implementing this and especially that teacher. Keep it up.

By KELLI MURRAY editorial@mysuburbanlife.com DOWNERS GROVE – Midwestern University students are shearing their locks in an effort to raise funds and bring awareness to pediatric cancer. Students, faculty and the public will be shaving their heads for St. Baldrick’s Foundation at 6:30 p.m. March 10, at Ballydoyle Irish Pub and Restaurant, 5157 Main St. The foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding research to find cures for childhood cancers, according to its website. Shaving heads for donations is all part of the fun, yet serious business of bringing awareness to its cause. This is the fifth year Midwestern University will be participating in the event. Last year’s event raised about $60,000, according to Chad Morreale, Midwestern University student and co-chairman of the event. “We are really proud of bringing all

Darien-Woodridge Local 3437 President Darren Lino said there would be five members from the firefighters union participating in the event. “Our local has participated in St. Baldrick’s for about the past five years,” at various locations, Lino wrote in an email. “Our membership takes great honor in participating in the event to help such a worthy cause.” For the five years Midwestern University has participated in the event, Ballydoyle has been a partner and is looking forward to another successful event, according to Linda Merrifield, events coordinator for the Irish restaurant and bar. “We have partnered with them so they have a place to call home,” Merrifield said. “I think it is a very special cause that gets great attention through this event, and we love hosting it and partnering with Midwest-

People get up to talk about their loved ones and the reasons why they participate. It’s very heartwarming.” The event also will spawn impromptu auctions of beards or mustaches in order to raise money, he said. Morreale didn’t shave his head last year, and he has regretted it, he said. “I am absolutely shaving my head this year,” Morreale said. “It will be a shocker, but I am super excited to do it.”

Coaches and swimmers from Hinsdale Central’s boys swimming and diving team celebrate Saturday in the pool at New Trier High School after winning the state title. It is the Red Devils first state title since 1989.
HSL
WINNETKA – Bob Barber could not have asked for a better ending to his first season as Hinsdale Central’s boys swimming coach. The longtime assistant, who took the helm after Corky King retired last year, guided his alma mater to a surprise state championship at New Trier on Saturday. Hinsdale Central secured the title when William Bowater, Brian Powell, Adam Pircon and Brian Portland took fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay. “This is what we’ve been training for and all of us couldn’t be more happy about it,” Pircon said. “We swam out of our minds. I’m just ecstatic.” It was the Red Devils’ seventh state title this school year. They won boys and girls golf, girls tennis, boys cross country and boys soccer titles in the fall sports season, and the forensics team also won a state championship. The swimming title is the 18th for the Red Devils but first since 1989, when Barber was a freshman. “I inherited an incredible team from Corky King,” Barber said. “He set a standard that every one of the kids rose to, so we were very fortunate to have that and a nice freshman class come in. “These guys wanted it more than anything. It was unbelievable.” While the Red Devils have been a consistent top-10 team, they weren’t considered contenders during the season thanks to average results. But there is a method to their training philosophy, though even the swimmers were surprised to become champions. “I think it’s amazing and so surprising to all of us,” sophomore Franco Reyes said. “We just train so hard during the whole season, not resting for any meets, losing most of them, but

Yet the Hinsdale South junior understood the magnitude of being honored one more time when the school hosted a pep assembly for all-state winter student-athletes Feb. 27. “It was pretty cool,” King said. “It’s not something every student gets to do during their time in high school and I’m proud to say that I got to experience something like that.” Junior gymnast Maddie Nowak also got some well-deserved recognition for winning three medals at the state meet in February to become one of the most decorated gymnasts in school history. She performed her uneven bars state routine as part of the assembly. It was the most people she has ever performed for. “Absolutely a lot of nerves, but I guess I was just motivated by the fact that most of my peers have no idea what I’m doing, so just do the best I can,” Nowak said. “It’s a huge honor. It’s really nice to see all the school spirit.” A video montage of Hinsdale South teachers and coaches relaying their favorite Josh King stories played, confet-

Hinsdale South’s Maddie Nowak performs her state meet routine Feb. 27 at a pep rally at the school. The assembly honored state-ranked student-athletes from the winter season. ti canons rained black and gold on the student body, and teachers dressed up in sumo, hot dog and banana costumes entertained the students. David Petrak and Joe Kluge, who finished second in Dramatic Duet Acting at the state competition, and Ashley Yong, a state finalist in radio speaking, also were honored, and South athletic director Kim Maloney made sure to mention the state-qualifying cheerleading and dance teams.
After the assembly concluded and the students had filed out of the gym, King spent time talking with Ronnie Fields, a former basketball standout at Farragut High School who is now a speaker and mentor to young athletes. He had a simple piece of advice for King to consider as his football recruitment continues. “Just stay level-headed, do what he’s been doing to get to this point, and just continue to focus on making himself happy,” Fields said.
Ives’ leads Hinsdale Central past South, into regional final By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – It didn’t take long for Thomas Ives to get into a groove. The Hinsdale Central senior saw his first shot fall, and his shots kept finding the bottom of the net in a 65-51 win Tuesday against Hinsdale South in a Class 4A regional semifinal at Downers Grove South. “After the first pull-up jump shot I was like, ‘That felt pretty good,’ and after the second one went in I was starting to feel it, and they just kept going in,” Ives said. “It always feels great, but it’s good to put points in the board and get the team going. The guys did a great job getting me open looks and feeding me the ball.” Ives scored 14 points in the first quarter, the last 12 coming on four 3-pointers, to help the Red Devils (216) establish an early lead that was never seriously threatened. When South (15-15) cut the deficit to 13-9 on a Barret Benson bucket with 1:31 left in the first, Ives hit his fourth 3-pointer and Grant Hutcherson had back-toback layups pushing Central’s lead to 20-9.
talking about stopping,” South head coach Brett Moore said of Ives, “but he really stepped up and had a huge first half for them.” Hinsdale Central 65, Hinsdale South 51 An Ives layup capped a 9-2 run at the start of the third quarter that gave the CENTRAL LEADERS Red Devils a 42-26 lead, and it was 49-36 n Thomas Ives: 21 points before the Hornets made a late push n George Kiernan: 14 points, 6 behind fourth-quarter baskets from rebounds Tommy Gumbus, Zach Duffy, Marn Matt Rafferty: 11 points, 5 rebounds tynas Matevicius and Xavier Fobbs. n Grant Hutcherson: 10 points Ultimately, the early deficit was too much for the Hornets to overcome. SOUTH LEADERS “Playing a team like Central, it’s n Barret Benson: 21 points, 9 rebounds hard to overcome because once they n Brian Kern: 11 points get a lead on you they just keep adding n Martynas Matevicius: 8 points to it,” South junior Brian Kern said. With the win, the Red Devils advanced to tonight’s regional title game. If you go It will be a clean slate in the final for Central, but Tuesday’s win provides n WHO: Hinsdale Central vs. some momentum. Downers Grove North “It doesn’t mean anything if we n WHAT: Class 4A regional final don’t win Friday,” Ives said. “We’re n WHEN: 7 p.m. today super hungry to keep winning games.” n WHERE: Downers Grove South, 1436 “I think it’s always nice to get Norfolk St. Downers Grove through the first game of any tournament or any playoff situation,” Central head coach Nick Latorre said. “Now “They’ve got enough talent on their we just focus on executing, taking it team that it’s whoever’s feeling it that one possession at a time and see if we night and he’s definitely a guy we were can take care of business.”
