By J.Tom Shaw Sponsored Content is a form of marketing that offers a business the opportunity to reach a targeted audience in a new way. While sponsored content can take on many forms, typically the method consists of articles and video created on behalf of a business. The content is labeled as sponsored, and linked from a news or entertainment website back to the business website. The business is featured in the content, and recognized as the sponsor. If done correctly, sponsored content can be very effective in reaching consumers since it is delivered in the same form and function as other content on the website, such as news. This method, commonly referred to as native content, has taken off in the online publishing industry in recent years. The content is displayed in relevant categories, and written in such a way to improve search engine results. So if someone is interested in car maintenance, they might come across an article that interests them in the local newspaper website, or they might conduct a search on Google and

find the article that way. In either case, the viewer is then exposed to the advertiser’s message by reading the article, and viewing the accompanying photo or video. There are some important elements to make sure that your sponsored content is effective as possible. First, make sure your content is created and displayed to improve your search results, or search engine optimization, SEO. Think about what words people use to search for your product or service on Google, and then use those keywords in your content and headlines. Create value with your content by being informative and engaging. Your article is not an advertisement, so don’t turn off your reader by beating them over the head with a sales message. Rather, offer something of value, such as a helpful tip related to your product or service. Finally, make sure your video and article reflect your business’ personality. Are you reflecting a fun, personable image? Keep the copy conversational and light so people aren’t intimidated or turned off by your message.

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com WILLOWBROOK – A gathering of 275 area Boy Scouts did not only learn about welding Saturday at the ETI School of Skilled Trades in Willowbrook. Pending official approval from the Guinness Book of World Records, they participated in the largest welding lesson ever. Boy Scouts of America Three Fires Council welding champion Walter Berkowicz organized the event to help the Scouts earn their welding merit badge and introduce them to an area of science, technology, engineering and

mathematics – or STEM – education. “Welding is a great vehicle by which to show kids really cool science,” Berkowicz said. “It’s a STEM-related thing that kids love because they’ve got sparks flying, there’s smoke, bright lights.” He said the idea for pursuing a world record was to create more excitement for the event. “A lot of kids want to earn a Guinness world record,” he said. To start, the council submitted a welding lesson plan to Guinness officials, who approved it. They have documented the lessons with witnesses, photos and videos,

which will all be submitted to Guinness to determine if they set a world record. Even beyond the world record to pursue, the Scouts enjoyed getting a chance to weld their own pieces of metal to take home with them. “If you can listen to some of these kids talk about it, it’s one of their favorite merit badges they’ve ever done,” Berkowicz said. Kelby Martinek with Troop 516 in Woodridge said he found the welding exciting and would definitely do it again. Jack Scodro with Troop 12 in Western Springs said doing the welding was

easier than he thought. “I didn’t think I would be good at it,” he said. Gabriel Becker with Troop 92 in Antioch said the process was more forgiving than he expected. “If you mess up the welding, you can immediately fix it,” he said. Kevin Pflanz, director of education with ETI, said this Scout event has been his favorite thing he has done at ETI. “I hope they learn the love of [welding],” he said. “Maybe they want this to be a profession. Maybe they want this to be a hobby. Just to see if there’s the love for it.”

Election over, but campaigning complaints still an issue By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com DARIEN – The Hinsdale District 86 Board of Education election may be over, but the board and the public had plenty more to say about the controversies surrounding the campaign at their meeting Monday night. The board was scheduled to discuss the multiple complaints filed against board members and the district’s administration in regards to campaigning that occurred on school campuses and an alleged bullying incident involving board member Claudia Manley. However, the discussion was moved to closed session because of litigation possibly being filed. District 86 attorney Terry Hodges told the board an attorney representing Manley had informed her that if the interpretation of board policy 4:20 was not changed, there could be court action. Representatives from District 86 did not clarify details about what the court action would be. Manley’s husband, Noel Manley, had filed complaints against district superintendent Bruce Law and board

member Jennifer Planson in regards to campaigning that occurred March 12 and 13 outside Hinsdale South High School. The complaint accuses Law of allowing the campaigning to occur on campus against board policy and Planson of organizing the campaigning at the school. Law has said the district attorney had advised him that the board policy prohibited paid campaign advertising, not passing out campaign literature. During the public comment, Eileen Meyer said she and two other community members had organized the campaign activity and Planson was not involved. Incoming board member Bill Carpenter filed a complaint against Manley and board president Richard Skoda, saying they organized their own campaign activity March 6 at Hinsdale

Central High School. Skoda, who was not re-elected during last week’s election, said the complaint had no standing because the accusations were hearsay. He said he believed there was no due process happening with the complaints, which was why he wanted the board to discuss them. Board member Victor Casini, who announced his resignation last week, asked if all the parties involved could agree to drop their complaints and put the issue behind them. “The election is over,” he said. “The new board will move in. We will save the district a lot of money and a lot of heartache.” However, members of the Dupont family said they would not be willing to drop their complaint against Manley that alleges she bullied their daughter Marissa for passing out campaign liter-

The Duponts also said the district’s investigation into their complaint has taken longer to be completed than the 10 days they were told and asked what was holding up the investigation. The board also held a public hearing in regards to exploring what it would cost to hire a third-party group to handle its buildings and grounds. Members of the public opposed outsourcing of the buildings and grounds staff, saying their familiarity with the students and facilities could not be replaced. Some speakers were concerned about the safety of the students with using unknown workers with a third-party company.

Hinsdale orthopedic surgeon is doctor to the pros By DIANE KRIEGER SPIVAK editorial@mysuburbanlife.com HINSDALE – Dr. Brian Forsythe gets to hang out with some pretty cool patients – like, say, players on the White Sox and the Chicago Bulls. Well, he doesn’t get to actually throw back a beer with them, but the Hinsdale resident, who’s a board-certified sports medicine, shoulder, knee and elbow orthopedic surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, is one of 13 physicians on staff who are team physicians for Chicago’s pro sports teams. Forsythe also was just named the official team physician for the Chicago Blitz indoor football club April 9. He also is a team physician for U.S. Soccer. That means he gets to attend 30 to 40 games and matches a year, and yes, there are times the gruesome task of popping back a dislocated finger or shoulder, or worse, falls to him. But Forsythe looks at it philosophically. “I’ve always loved sports,” said Forsythe, who played soccer as a student at Brown University. “The reason I went into orthopedics is so I could stay involved in athletics,” he said. “A lot of us went into orthopedics because we enjoy staying close to

Brian Foresythe’s tips to save young players from sports injuries Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush and the Illinois Athletic Trainers Association physicians are launching Shoulders for Life, a public service campaign aimed at protecting young players from sports injuries. According to Dr. Brian Forsythe, an orthopedic surgeon at Rush and team physician to the White Sox, Bulls, U.S. Soccer and Chicago Blitz, shoulder overuse syndrome in young athletes has escalated to epidemic proportions, especially in overhead sports such as baseball, softball, tennis, swimming, gymnastics and volleyball. the game. I think it gives you a heightened appreciation for how skilled these athletes are and how quickly they move and accomplish things on the field or court.” To Forsythe, it’s the best job in the world. “You get to work with people who are highly motivated and have devoted their lives to the sport and you’re part of it,” he said. “Maintaining their functionality for somebody who loves

“We recommend a three-month break each year to allow their bodies to rest,” Forsythe said. “Kids have become yearround athletes and they never get a break. Forsythe said little leaguers should adhere to pitch counts and female softball players should avoid pitching four to five games in a weekend. Players should warm up. stretch, workout and cool down and, pitchers especially, should do their sleeper stretches. “It also helps if they play more than one sport because there’s less chance overuse of a particular joint,” Forsythe said. sports, it’s the perfect marriage.” Forsythe has been taking care of the White Sox since he joined the group of team physicians 3 ½ years ago. How did he feel about taking on the pros? “When you’re first involved with professional sports there may be a little bit of awe; it’s a starstruck phenomenon,” he said. “But it wears off quickly. You realize although they’re professional athletes they’re just like everyone else.”

Typically, he shows up an hour or two in advance of the game. “In the training room you’re evaluating players who have chronic injuries as to whether they can play,” Forsythe said. “Whether they tolerate practice determines whether they play. Often it comes down to whether they can function and whether they’re safe to run.” Forsythe can’t name names to maintain patient confidentiality, but he would say he’s tended to some pretty grisly injuries. “There was a soccer game I was covering where an athlete sustained horrific fracture to the leg; the tibia and fibula were bent 60 degrees,” he said. “I was able to reduce the fracture on site and get his excruciating pain under control until he could get transferred.” Surprisingly, at the highest risk at football games are the cheerleaders, who have a catastrophic injury rate six times that of the players, Forsythe said. “It’s usually the flyers who are flown awry or dropped,” he said, noting one instance where a cheerleader was thrown backward and landed on the track, suffering cracked ribs and a bruised lung. “It was harrowing,” Forsythe said.

Prevention beats treatment when it comes to your health I recently got an email from U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. I receive the occasional greeting from my friends at the White House, but this was my first from Murthy. He wanted me to know it was National Health Week. I thought this was very wise timing, as it did not intersect with my spring COMMUNITY break and, therefore, did not VOICE require me to forsake the Katherine cheese and wine and chocolate Leibforth and wide-ranging assortment of empty carbs that make every vacation worth taking. The dollars make sense, In celebration of National Health Week, Murthy was fobut what hits home cusing his attention on staying is seeing the pleasure healthy and investing in the health of future generations. I am a person, a parent, and a prevention professional. As a real-live person, I confess I wait until it hurts (and then I wait some more) and then I seek treatment. As a parent, I schedule the annual checkup, force feed vegetables and pray for abstinence from risky behavior. As a prevention professional, I observe the fiscal cost of prevention versus the larger cost of treatment. The dollars make sense, but what hits home is seeing the pleasure students take in learning how their brains and bodies work compared with the often tragic outcomes for those who do not learn and suffer the consequences.

College of DuPage Board of Trustees candidates Charles Bernstein and Frank Napolitano celebrate their victory April 7 with Deanne Mazzochi (not shown).

We should all take a moment to thank all of the candidates who threw their hats in the ring to run in the April 7 municipal election. Public service at the local level is often a thankless task, and with the negative attention it generates, not to mention the low voter turnout, it’s impressive so many people want to take part. Hopefuls who failed to garner enough votes to gain a seat may feel they accomplished nothing, but that’s completely untrue. Those who did make it to the polls were no doubt gratified to have options when they picked who would lead local village, school district, park district and other boards that serve their communities. There’s no need to fear wildlife Chipmunks and foxes are harmless unless you attack them. They are more afraid of you then you are of them. Wildlife is all around us, and those of us who live in the country enjoy seeing them. We had a fox who lived under our shed one spring and had four little ones. They were a joy to watch and never harmed anyone. That’s more than I can say for some people’s dogs.

Parents must make tough choices whose theory is “if you can’t afford to

Kindergarten is crucial In today’s extremely competitive scholastic environment, kindergarten plays a critical role in a child’s academic development. Adding a few hours a day seems more than appropriate.

Don’t judge working parents A reader suggested that proponents of full-day kindergarten are parents who “want to work instead of being home with their children” and suggested that families that can’t exist on one income “shouldn’t be having children.” This is an offensive statement not only because it’s often necessary to have two incomes to support a family these days but also because parents should be able to choose to stay home or go back to work and not be judged for their decision.

spend time at home with your children and just have one parent working, then maybe you shouldn’t be having children.” I wonder how this theory is to play out if one parent should die, becomes incapacitated or just leave. I think a better theory is to accept that, in most cases, people make choices that they believe are in the best interest of their families. Even if they are not choices you would personally make, the world would be a better place if we all tried to support our neighbors instead of sitting in judgment of them.

No crime required This is an answer to “T-shirt to stop harassment.” Sometimes you don’t have to have committed a crime to be harassed. I can vouch for that. I’ve been pulled over three or four times for no reason, and they just come up with an excuse of “your seat belt” or “you’re speeding.” And it’s all because you’re a person of color. That’s all it is.

Blame for both sides In response to the person who suggested a T-shirt that reads “Stop Police Harassment Now … by NOT COMMITTING CRIMES!!!” – I think this is an excellent idea and a perfect opportunity to print on the reverse a reminder to the police to stop shooting unarmed citizens in the back.

By the time these kids are in kindergarten, school life begins and play time at home slowly comes to an end, it is something you have to face as a parent. … I wish inflation didn’t overtake salary raises as bad as they have since the first recession, but it is what it is. So I will keep leading by example in my household of working my butt off while my wife works part time while my kids go to all-day kindergarten (8-2). And God forbid we take advantage of them getting more educated while we survive – working two jobs and keep reaching for that so-called American Dream.

Why don’t bicycle riders have to buy license plates for their bicycles? They’re building hundreds of miles of bicycle paths, and they get the privilege of riding on the bicycle paths. Car owners have to buy license plates to drive on the streets. Let the bicycle riders buy a license and offer insurance policies for them.

The paramedics and pharmaceutical staff couldn’t have been more caring to me in my time of need. I hope you all had a blessed Easter.

Rainfall exposes issues

How about some good news?

A few things became clear after this past rain. First, the flooding has gotten worse in many areas. And secondly, the stormwater fee, or “Sandack rain tax,” will continue to increase year by year, and the village has done nothing to address the issue of overbuilding, choosing instead to spread the cost around. I’m hoping this new council

from the state’s attorney’s office. An investigation revealed from June 2006 to December 2013, Valenta allegedly submitted Broadcast Technologies invoices to the college for merchandise and labor for work purported to be done at WDCB. The investigation also indicated the labor and merchandise listed on the invoices, totaling $200,829.77, was never delivered to the station. Valenta was originally charged Feb. 19 and posted bond on his $400,000 bail the next day, Darrah said.

“The allegations in this case clearly illustrate the concept of simple greed,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement at the time. “The defendant had a good job for more than two decades before he allegedly decided to illegally supplement his income at the expense of the College of DuPage.” Valenta’s attorney, Brad Telander, did not respond to a request for comment. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 1 before Judge Liam Brennan, Darrah said.

A former College of DuPage radio engineer accused of stealing more than $200,000 from the school’s radio station, WDCB, pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges Monday, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah. John Valenta, 65, of the 1700 block of Lucky Debonair Court, Wheaton, faces three charges of theft in excess of

$100,000 – a Class X felony – and nine further counts of forgery, Darrah said. COD’s Hamilton talks Clean Slate win ert Breuder in January and ask him to step aside before his scheduled March 2016 retirement date as the school sifts through the issues it’s facing that sprung up under his watch, she said. “One of the symptoms of the problem [with the college] was that golden handshake, and that’s something that’s easy to understand,” she said. “Those examples were easy to convey to people and encapsulated the attitude, the arroDeanne gance, the disregard for Mazzochi taxpayer dollars.” Hamilton pointed to Breuder’s deal, lavish board spending at the campus’ Waterleaf restaurant and the unchecked invoices at the college radio station that allowed a former employFrank ee to allegedly steal more Napolitano than $200,000 in school funds as things that became symbolic of the culture of the college for voters. She also said the school’s response – or lack thereof – to proposed bills calling for the college to pay for a state-run financial audit was “obstructionary.” “The legislation is saying our board has not demonstrated a sufficient level of responsibility to make judgments,” she said. “They are a last resort kind of thing, but in our case, unfortunately, it seems like we need it. But we have to get better control of what’s going on in our own house before going to the legislators.” The Clean Slate candidates elected April 7 did not respond to requests for comment, but Hamilton stressed that while they were on the same page, they weren’t one voice. “We are obviously going to be working together, but every single individual on this slate is an independent thinker,” she said. “So we will listen to each other, and we don’t necessarily agree all the time, but our outlook is for reform at the college and that is something we do share.”

In a few weeks, area voters will see a Clean Slate at the College of DuPage. Amid a crowded field of candidates, a slate of self-titled reformers – Deanne Mazzochi, Frank Napolitano and Charles Bernstein – nearly swept the election in DuPage, Will and Cook counties, with each winning a seat on the board. “Tonight, they gave Charles us a clear mandate to Bernstein clean up the College of DuPage,” the trio said in a statement on election night. “To put an end to the attitude that has persisted there that taxpayers don’t count and insiders rule. To finally Kathy stop the waste, fraud Hamilton and abuse. To end business as usual and to truly put taxpayers, students and faculty ahead of the insider interests that have dominated this board and this school for too long.” Such a uniform victory alone brings a new power dynamic to the board. With vocal supporter and Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton already at the table, a strong minority may soon become the majority. Hamilton said she was thrilled about the opportunity to reshape the board after a number of scandals involving waste and corruption have inundated the school. Allied with or occupying four of the seven trustee seats, Hamilton finds herself poised to take the chairmanship – something she’s confirmed she will pursue. “We’re very, very excited for the community to have greater control of what goes on at the college – it will be good for everybody,” she said. The first priority for the Clean Slate board would be to “claw back” the $762,868 buyout given to President Rob-

COD Foundation director to retire Brod says changes are unrelated to controversy surrounding school SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The director of the College of DuPage Foundation has announced she will retire in October after months of controversy – although not because of it. Catherine Brod, who also serves as the college’s vice president of development, will step down f r o m b o t h Catherine roles at the Brod school this fall. She said via email she informed President Robert Breuder on March 12 that she was leaving to pursue a career in the hospice industry. Anthony Nicholas helps South complete sweep BY JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DARIEN – It’s safe to say Anthony Nicholas felt comfortable on the mound Monday. At the same time, his Hinsdale South teammates were just as comfortable in the batter’s box. Nicholas’ pitching and the Hornets’ 11 hits led to a 10-0, five-inning win against Morton and a solid start in the West Suburban Gold conference. “I was feeling pretty good,” Nicholas said. “The fastball and change-up were both working for me. I was just trying to throw strikes and stay ahead.” Nicholas allowed just one hit and struck out six in a complete-game win. Only twice did a batter earn a three-ball count against him. With a coach from Roosevelt University watching, Nicholas did precisely what he’s done this season. “He’s been pretty consistent with what he’s done all season,” South head coach Paul Hoel said. “The biggest thing is he got ahead of hitters today. His change-up was like 12 miles per hour off his fastball and it was hard to pick up, and his fastball was jumping up there. It was nice.” The Hornets, who improved to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in the West Suburban Gold with the win, were just as sharp offensively. They scored in every inning and put their versatility on display. In the first inning, Danny Mazzei drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and scored on Mike Nicosia’s single. Nicosia swiped second, trotted to third on a Tim Dziergas groundout and scored on Aaron Frueh’s groundout. Later in the game, Terrence Cribbs hit the roof of a storage garage in left field on a three-run home Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com run. He won’t be on the hook Hinsdale South’s Anthony Nicholas delivers a pitch Monday in a home game against Morton. Nicholas was for any damages to the roof. “No, we’ll pay for that oursharp on the mound and the bats produced in the Hornets’ 10-0 win to complete a series sweep.

It felt like 1998 again with the old bats [with the bigger sweet spot]. That was a shot. He’s a strong, powerful guy. Not many second basemen are going to hit the ball like that.” The series sweep against Morton was a good way to start West Suburban gold play. The Hornets won the conference in 2012 and 2013 and finished second last season. Currently, they are with Downers Grove South and Willowbrook as conference unbeatens. “We played like we wanted to this series, so I’m happy,” Hoel said. “Every game was well-pitched, we played good defense, ran the bases well, had good at-bats and manufactured runs.” South starts a WSG series against Proviso East today looking for more wins. “We’re undefeated in conference right now so we’re just going to try and keep the momentum going throughout the rest of our games,” Nicholas said.

Hinsdale Central girls soccer heads in right direction By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – The PepsiCo Showdown is regarded as one of the most competitive soccer tournaments in the state. The fact that Maeve McLaughlin and her Hinsdale Central teammates got off to a strong start in the tourney speaks to the high level the Red Devils are playing at early in the season. “It’s a lot of games in a short amount of time, but we play really well and since we’re communicating really well it’s a lot easier,” McLaughlin said. “We all play to our strengths, and when we do that it just comes a lot easier in the games.” The Red Devils started the PepsiCo Showdown with a 7-0 win against defending Class 1A state champ Manteno, then got by Lincoln-Way North 1-0 in double overtime Tuesday on the strength of McLaughlin’s goal from distance.

HINSDALE – Back-to-back solid showings in wins had Hinsdale Central’s baseball anticipating similar results moving forward. But after topping rival Lyons Township for a West Suburban Silver series win and a 13-3 victory against Hinsdale South on April 10, the Red Devils lost four straight, including a 12-7 setback against Willowbrook on Tuesday. That was after Downers Grove North took all three games in a WSS series Saturday and Monday. “If you talked to me Friday night, I thought we knew what our roles were because we had taken two from Lyons and had just beat Hinsdale South, and then Saturday happened,” Central head coach Jason Ziemer said. “I know we’ve walked 22 guys and hit three guys in the last two games, and it wasn’t that much better on Saturday.” Red Devil pitchers doled out 11 walks against the Warriors and the offense was held hitless through four innings before a late rally. Michael Johnson provided a highlight with a monster two-run home run to center field that made it a 7-5 game in the sixth. It was one of three Central hits on the day. “Obviously we weren’t on our A-game today, there’s no doubt about that, but it’s baseball,” Johnson said. “Sometimes you have a good day and sometimes you don’t, and we’ll just look toward the next game.”
