More than 75 community members attended the event and brought kitten supplies for the animal shelter. The Kitten Shower was held for the second year in April in anticipation of the many litters of kittens that arrive at the shelter between April and October. The event also featured a face painting table, balloon artist and sweet treats while attendees went on tours and played with some of the society’s cats.

By Rita Walker Did you know that M-Day was on April 21? That was the day Google decided to wake businesses up to the mobile revolution. Mobile has been growing for years, but the pace is picking up. In 2013, searches done on mobile devices outnumbered searches done on desktop computers. Businesses should have taken notice then (if not before) and made their websites easily viewable on phones and tablets. But, many businesses missed the memo or ignored it. The memo is coming out loud and clear now from a source that should be paid attention to….Google. Google’s “memo” was published on February 26, 2015. It included on April 21, 2015 Google will be implementing algorithm changes that will cause websites that are mobile optimized to be displayed higher in search results. Google’s announcement states, “Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal…Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices. “In lay terms this means that if a business wants it’s website to come up early to people searching on a phone, their website needs to be easy to read on a
phone. This means that a person should not have to zoom in or pinch and pull the screen to read the content. To see if a website is mobile friendly, use a mobile site tester online. There are two ways to have a mobile optimized website. The first is a “bandaid” solution. It is having a separate mobile companion site. It is usually an abbreviated version of the desktop site. It typically has the most commonly viewed information, such as address, hours, and click to call function. The better long term solution is having a responsive design. A responsive website is a site that adjusts the content to be viewable on any size screen. The advantage is having all of the content on a website available to people viewing it on a mobile device. Unless a business wants to see a decline in traffic (and more importantly potential customers) to their website, it is critical to have a mobile friendly website. If Google penalizes a website for not being mobile optimized, it will definitely result in less visits because more than half of searches are taking place on a mobile device and over 90% of people searching do not go past the first page of search results.

The advisory referendum questions focused on whether the Board of Education should petition the Illinois General Assembly to change state labor laws to prohibit school district employees from striking and whether student and parent assessments and classroom attendance should be part of teacher performance evaluations. Both questions received a majority yes votes, according to unofficial election results provided by the DuPage Election Commission.

the board could take any official action, which included the paying of staff salaries and bills for the district. Skoda, serving in what was to be his last meeting, said he was not sure whether they would reschedule the meeting before the board’s next meeting May 4, when the new board members will be sworn in. Law said he is exploring whether any harm would come to the district if the board did not approve those payments before the end of the month. Gallo said the district could afford to wait until next week to approve those payments. She said a similar situation happened in January 2014 when a meeting was canceled because of weather and the board did not reschedule the meeting then. Although there was an action item on the agenda to appoint a new board member to replace Casini, who plans to resign, Skoda said the board would not have named a replacement because Casini has not officially resigned yet.

DARIEN – Board members walking out in protest forced an abrupt ending to Monday’s Hinsdale Township High School District 86 Board of Education meeting. Board members Kay Gallo, Michael Kuhn and Jennifer Planson were protesting two resolutions scheduled to be voted on in regards to referendum questions on the April ballot. Gallo said it would be premature and illegal for the board to adopt those resolutions because the final vote tallies on the referendums had not been released. She said she would leave the meeting if the resolutions were not tabled. With the three members leaving, only board members Edward Corcoran, Claudia Manley and board President Richard Skoda were in attendance, meaning the board no longer had enough members to take action. Board member Victor Casini was
The resolutions were to inform the General Assembly of the results of the advisory referendum on labor stoppages and give the district administration direction on its teacher performance evaluations. Gallo said she also was concerned by the resolution related to the labor stoppages because it said the district would send a contingent to Springfield to give the results, which she said was a waste of money. Skoda said the resolutions were ultimately “inconsequential” and that it was sad those board members chose those issues to take a stand on. “I could have found a lot better reasons to walk out over than that,” he said. Superintendent Bruce Law said the district’s attorney had not questioned the legality of the resolutions prior to the meeting and the district would not pursue the question unless the resolutions were part of the agenda of a future meeting. The meeting was adjourned before

sell an adjacent alley to the developer for $34,000. Robert McGinnis, the village’s director of community development and building commissioner, said the proposal is going back to plan commission for a second reading and approval May 13, followed by a vote by the village board, which is planned for May 19. If the village board approves the
plan, the developer would then be able to apply for building permits. McGinnis said the village is pleased with the development proposal because the housing would be consistent with the village’s designated use for the property. He said Belluomini’s was a legal, nonconforming use of a business on a residential-zoned property.
Westview Hills band to perform at SuperState, White Sox game SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WILLOWBROOK – Get ready to be blown away by the Westview Hills Middle School band. The group of students has big gigs scheduled in May, including performing at the Illinois SuperState Festival and at a Chicago White Sox game, according to a news release. students will join other top middle school, junior high and high school bands from across the state at the 2015 Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival on May 8. They will be some of only a few school bands from Illinois who will perform on the Foellinger Great Hall stage in the University of Illinois Krannert Center – a stage shared by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, according to the release.
Forty-seven students who play woodwind, brass and percussion instruments were picked to perform. According to the release, hundreds of schools applied to perform and Westview Hills was one of eight selected. On May 20, the entire band of 150 students is schedule to perform the “Star Spangled Banner” at U.S. Cellular Field before a Chicago White Sox home game against the Cleveland Indians. This will be the fourth time the
band has performed before a White Sox game since the team won the World Series in 2005. Previously, the band has performed at many other prestigious locations, including the Rotunda at the state capital in Springfield, Chicago’s Daley Plaza and Cantigny Park’s museum. Karen Moffett, band teacher and director, said students playing the various venues will help them become more well-rounded and stronger musicians.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO). YouTube has dominated the video view field for several years now. Owned by Google, YouTube videos receive favorable search result status in Google searches. Your business can host your videos on YouTube, and link back to your website. You can also display the video on your website using a YouTube widget. In both cases, that linking will improve your chances of getting found by people searching for your product or service. Video rocks on social media. Facebook allows videos to auto play in the news feed. Experts have noted that video can outperform organic reach over text and photo content on Facebook. Social media video for business should be friendly, fun, and informal. Show you and your employees active in the community, having fun with customers, or demonstrating some helpful tips. SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – A former teacher at Hinsdale Central High School was taken into custody and charged with criminal sexual abuse April 24, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. James Bryla, 29, of the 1800 block of Hampton Lane, Yorkville, appeared in bond court April 24 before Judge James Orel. Bryla was charged with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and one count of criminal sexual assault. Bond was set at $300,000. Bryla is a former technology teacher at Hinsdale Central High School. Bryla was put on leave from the high school Dec. 12, according to District 86 Superintendent Bruce Law. Bryla resigned the following day. In a letter to parents, Law confirmed Bryla was the
teacher who was put on leave in December. Bryla allegedly met a 16-year-old female student in April 2011 at a park after school on at least two occasions where inappropriate sexual contact took place at the park and inside Bryla’s vehicle, according to the release. The Hinsdale Police Department, working with the DuPage County Children’s Center, began an investigation after they were alerted to the allegations by the former student in December. “We are pleased to have such a cooperative relationship with [District 86] school administrators and the State’s Attorney Office that puts the safety of our student first,” Hinsdale Police Chief Bradley Bloom stated in the release. Bryla’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday.

Family Shelter Service builds bond between mothers and children Even before she was born, Mia was familiar with the sound of angry voices. The violence in her home continued for the next three years until a Family Shelter Service poster in a women’s restroom – headlined “Are You Afraid of Someone You Love?” – helped Mia’s mother, Chelsey, find a way out. When they first arrived at our shelter, Mia was having COMMUNITY nightmares and the slightest VOICE movement would startle her. Maureen Case workers and counselors McGuire also realized Chelsey was having trouble parenting Mia. This is not uncommon for people whose every waking moment is preoccupied with survival. To help the mother, Family Shelter Service staff modeled good parenting techniques throughout their stay. “We don’t want to interfere, so we do a lot of interacting in the communal space at our shelter,” said Lisa Horne, assistant shelter director. “We work to foster a stronger bond between mother and child, but we never want to sound like we are criticizing or pointing out flaws.” Reaching young children who have experienced trauma is one of our greatest challenges at Family Shelter Service, and to help Mia, staff employed a relatively new counseling technique known as child-parent psychotherapy, or CPP, to strengthen the bond between mother and child to restore the child’s sense of safety. “When she first arrived, Mia was afraid of everyone,” Horne said, “but after several weeks, we knew she was making progress when she climbed onto the lap of one of our counselors and gave them a hug.” Family Shelter Service worked with Chelsey and Mia for two years. “In that time, we saw tremendous progress,” counselor Kelly Vaughan said. “Mia developed a healthy independence and they were both using the coping skills and tools that we had offered them for dealing with the after-effects of trauma.” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics tell us 200,000 people in DuPage will be affected by domestic violence at some point in their lifetime. And we know countless children will be witnesses to this violence. By bringing this issue out of the shadows, discussing it with our children and reaching out to anyone who may need the assistance of Family Shelter Service, we all can play a role in helping people like Chelsey who may not know that our free, confidential services are only a phone call away.

The College of DuPage announced Tuesday evening President Robert Breuder is taking a medical leave of absence.
OUR VIEW
Breuder’s leave one more step in the right direction for COD It’s the result that many people wanted, but not the way most wanted it. College of DuPage President Robert Breuder’s medical leave accomplishes something that was necessary a long time ago – he’s no longer running the school. To begin the process of rebuilding the community’s trust in the institution, the man who for many symbolized all that was wrong with the current way of doing business had to go. If Breuder is in fact seriously ill, we wish him a speedy recovery. If it was simply a cynical effort to evade a likely vote Thursday that would probably put him on leave anyway ... well, then we’re simply relieved that he’s no longer in charge, however it happened. The new Board of Trustees has a lot to figure out in their first weeks. Who is going to run the school on a day-to-day basis? How should they respond to all the federal and county subpoenas flying around? How can the administration rebuild trust with the stu-

dents, faculty and community? Who will get the title of “president” when Breuder is finally, permanently out of the job? The subpoenas that have been lodged by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office aren’t proof there was any illegal activity. There have been accusations of document destruction by Board Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, and those accusations definitely need to be investigated thoroughly. If there was any criminal activity related to the finances of the College of DuPage Foundation, it needs to be prosecuted. We don’t know what those subpoenas will turn up, if there will be charges or if this will all just fizzle out. One thing we do know – with the new members of the board elected this month, and Breuder taking a medical leave – the ranks of leadership are changing at the school. We will all be watching to be sure the new leaders do a better job than the old.

There’s nothing wrong with two-income families To the individual who stated, “School should never be used as a free baby-sitting service,” your statement, “One should never need two incomes to support a family.” First of all, the vast majority of households in the U.S. are two-income households (59.1 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics), so you are condemning most of the families in the United States. You have no right to make such a statement based on the financial needs of others. Second, many women work because they choose to work and obtain fulfillment from having both a career and a family. And who are you to judge that women cannot have both a career and a family?

Stop the interruptions on TV I don’t understand why the TV reporters and the weather reporters always have to interrupt the program when they can wait until 4 o’clock at the news that is not that important. Full-day kindergarten isn’t about baby-sitting, it’s extended learning To the reader opposed to full-day kindergarten – you are right, kindergarten is not free baby-sitting. It is an extended learning opportunity, a socialization tool and an ability to build bonds outside the household. More than 90 percent of Illinois elementary schools have full-day kindergarten. This isn’t about baby-sitting, it’s about rethinking a system to be in line with today’s expectations on education. So before you cast judgment on dual income families (because that’s what you’re doing, under the guise of a debate about full-day kindergarten), take a look at the bigger picture beyond Downers Grove. There is a whole world out there and I for one would like my children to learn about it – taught by trained educators, not baby sitters.

I wish that the DuPage law enforcement agencies would stop arresting people for marijuana possession, especially when the people they are arresting are older than 21 years old. It’s frustrating to see it in the newspaper and online that people are being arrested for this drug that is not harming anyone and is now legal in four states in the country. I’m sure the law enforcement agencies in DuPage could use their resources to fight real crime in this county.

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com The College of DuPage has been served its third federal subpoena in a month, with authorities seeking recordings of the school on the day administrators received the first two. The subpoena requests video and audio from 2:30 to 11:59 p.m. April 13 of the interior and exterior of the college’s Student Resource Center, according to school spokesman Randall Samborn. The center houses the office of President Robert Breuder, who is on medical leave as of Wednesday. “The College of DuPage is fully cooperating with any federal investigation,” Samborn said. On April 13, the college was served two federal subpoenas, following a similar investigation by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. Of the two, one revolved around financial records for

senior staff and trustees, communications, and contracts involving college foundation members as far back as Jan. 1, 2009, and focused on the spending habits of Breuder, trustees and senior management. It also delved into accusations that members of the College of DuPage Foundation Board of Directors inappropriately received preferential treatment for contracts for work at the school. The second subpoena sought information about the college’s Suburban Law Enforcement Academy, including class records, instructor certificates, transcripts and communication between several top academy officials.
The third was served April 16, according to Samborn. In addition to requests for the April 13 recordings, it also asks video and audio of the resource center between April 13 and 16 be preserved. College of DuPage Board of Trustees Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, who has been a vocal opponent of the Breuder administration, previously indicated school officials may have destroyed papers or transactions. On April 7, she sent Breuder and Chairwoman Erin Birt a legal hold notice demanding the school introduce a mandatory retention policy for college and foundation documents. When asked about the intent of the April 16 subpoena or whether its issuance could be related to the destruction of records, she issued a statement on the matter. “If he’s done what is suggested here, violating the hold letter I issued is the least of his problems,” she said of
Breuder in the statement. Birt did not respond to requests for comment. In recent months, the school has come under fire after the board awarded Breuder a nearly $763,000 buyout. The Faculty Senate has passed a resolution calling for Breuder to be placed on administrative leave until the ongoing investigations are resolved. Trustees were scheduled to meet Thursday, when new board members Deanne Mazzochi, Frank Napolitano and Charles Bernstein, who won the April election running as the Hamilton-backed Clean Slate, will be sworn in. Included on the agenda was putting Breuder on paid administrative leave, authorizing a state-run audit from the Illinois Auditor General, approving an internal investigation, suspending all house accounts at the on-campus Waterleaf Restaurant, as well as all travel and entertainment reimbursement for trustees, and more.

Chicago, Illinois – National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Chicago Red Stars drew 2-2 in a spirited affair with mighty Portland Thorns FC on Saturday night. Reigning NWSL Player of the Week Christen Press had her second straight twogoal performance to open the 2015 season, but Thorns FC clawed its way back into the game and earned a point courtesy of goals from Christine Sinclair and Mana Shim before halftime. In the early stages of the clash with Portland, Chicago continued right where it had left off in the dramatic 3-2 victory over Seattle the previous week. A mere four minutes into the match, Press took down an excellent long ball by captain Lori Chalupny and cut to her right, followed by a beautiful curler that left outstretched German international goalkeeper Nadine Angerer without a chance. U.S. Women’s National Team star Press was at it again just four minutes later, receiving the ball from midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo and exploding past her marker on the left side of the penalty area. The 26-year-old fired at goal from a tight angle and was delighted to see her attempt deflect off defender Courtney Niemiec and underneath Angerer for the day’s second strike. Portland nearly pulled one back moments later, as Tobin Heath worked her way to the by-line on the right and sent a dangerous cross toward the far past, only to see Red Stars netminder Karina LeBlanc produce a stunning kick-save to deny the unmarked Shim. The rebound fell straight Thorns FC debutant Taylor Comeau, whose effort ricocheted off a defender before being headed off the line by well-positioned Chicago defender Julie Johnston. The Red Stars nearly found the net at the other end in the 15th minute, rookie Danielle Colaprico swinging in a corner kick from the left that was nodded just over the frame by legendary U.S. midfielder Shannon Boxx. Three minutes later, Press thought she had a hat trick when she

was released by Chalupny and did well to release a right-footed effort that seemed destined for the back of the net until it was tipped wide by Angerer’s fingertips. Instead of celebrating a third Chicago tally, the fans at Benedictine University saw their team’s lead cut in half just before the half-hour mark. Allie Long found Sinclair at the top of the penalty box and the Canada striker hit a low shot that found its way through traffic and inside the left post for a clinic in precision goal-scoring. Portland nearly leveled the match four minutes from the break, LeBlanc rushing off her line and coming up with a stunning block to deny Sinclair’s toe-poke from close range. Thorns FC finally tied things up in the opening stages of the second period, as Shim pounced on a partial clearance by taking a touch at the edge of the box and picking out the inside of the far post with a well-placed left-footed blast. The Red Stars were fortunate not to concede another goal when Sinclair subsequently found Comeau unmarked inside the penalty area and the midfielder send a mishit effort well over the frame. The visitors got even closer to the go-ahead tally in the 74th minute, substitute Kendall Johnson feeding Sinead Farrell, whose excellent chipped attempt bounced off the underside off the crossbar and came within inches of crossing the line. Chicago defender and New Zealand captain Abby Erceg had the game’s final quality chance when she beat several defenders to ball on DiBernardo free-kick from midfield, only to see the dangerous header parried by Angerer. The Chicago Red Stars look to stay undefeated on the season when they host American legend Christie Rampone and Sky Blue FC on Saturday, May 2. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

Red Devils click, improve to 11-10 after tough start By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com

HINSDALE – All Jake Ryder and his Hinsdale Central baseball teammates needed was a little time. Ryder is one of several juniors on the team, and after some initial ups and downs the Red Devils seem to have turned the corner and are headed in the right direction. “I think it’s team chemistry,” Ryder said of the key to recent success. “All the juniors, this is their first time on varsity and I think the team is just coming together and all the juniors and seniors are playing the same game.” A 12-7 loss against Willowbrook on April 14 was a low point for the Red Devils as they slipped to 4-8 on the season. Since then, they’ve defeated Leyden in a West Suburban Conference crossover, took two of three games in a West Suburban Silver series against Glenbard West, and won all three against WSS foe Proviso West to improve to 11-10 overall and 7-5 in the Silver. In Tuesday’s 10-0, five-inning win against the Panthers, Robert Dandorph [three innings pitched to earn the win], Brandon Spevak and Anthony Pescara combined for the shutout. Spevak and Pescara got through an inning each without allowing a hit. “Really, a lot of it comes down to our pitching,” Hinsdale Central head coach Jason Ziemer said. “Pitching sets the tone. If they’re throwing strikes, it makes a big difference. That’s been the key – recently we’ve been throwing strikes.” Andrew Jurack and Tom Lorenc earned wins in the Glenbard West series, Lorenc in relief of Dandorph, who pitched well deep into the game. “Andrew Jurack threw a really nice game against Glenbard West. Complete game, two runs, four hits and he didn’t walk anybody,” Ziemer said. “Rob Dan-

They touched him up in the fifth inning, but he pitched really strong for us.” The Red Devils’ bats took some time to wake up Tuesday before a seven-run fourth inning forged the 10-0 lead. William Hughes and Alex Panice both scored a run and drove in two runs each in the fourth as Central sent 12 men to the plate. “I think it just took us some time to get used to his speed,” Ryder said of
Proviso’s pitcher. “It just took us some time to get used to that.” Central is off from WSS play this weekend and has a series against conference-leading Oak Park-River Forest and one against York left on the slate. If the Red Devils continue to receive strong pitching performances, they might still be able to make some noise in the WSS race. “Our offense hits, we’re going to score runs, it’s just a matter of if we can stop the other guys,” Ziemer said.

Tough stretch part of playoff preparation for Red Devils By MATT LE CREN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com WHEATON – Persistence paid off for Hinsdale Central’s girls soccer team Saturday. After going scoreless for 172 minutes to start the Naperville Invitational, the Red Devils edged Geneva 1-0 in double overtime at Rexilius Field. Jenny Saviski tallied the lone goal with 7:22 remaining in the second overtime, heading a corner kick from Lauren Cangelosi out of a crowd in front of the net, and Geneva did not get a shot off the rest of the way. “It was coming to the near post, so the goalie was behind me and there were a lot of people coming in,” Saviski said. “So I ducked to flip it over.” While not exactly flipping out over the win, the Red Devils were relieved to finally find the back of the net after controlling most of the action in both of their group match-
es. They lost 1-0 on penalty kicks to eventual group winner Wheaton North on April 23 and outshot Geneva by a 14-4 margin. “We just tried to stay focused on the game and keep the pressure on the whole game,” Hinsdale Central senior defender Erin Smith said. “It was important that no one ever stopped and no one ever gave up, so that’s what kept us going. “We know each other well and know what everybody is going to do and everybody’s strengths and weaknesses, so that really helps.” The Red Devils used that knowledge to keep the Vikings off balance with precision passing when they had the ball and pressure defense when they didn’t. Goalie Katy Coseglia needed to make two saves, both routine, to post her seventh shutout. Smith and the rest of Central’s senior group enjoyed a senior day victory Tuesday.
Senior Danielle Shayani tallied a goal and Smith assisted on Emma Dannhausen-Brun’s game winner with 29.8 seconds left in a 2-1 win against Wheaton Warrenville South. The win, which upped Central’s record to 10-3, came near the midpoint of a grueling stretch that included the two Naperville Invitational games, plus two more Naperville Invitational games [the second one today at Wheaton North] and key upcoming West Suburban Silver games against Oak Park-River Forest [May 5] and Lyons Township [May 7]. The Red Devils’ challenging schedule is done by design. “More than anything, we want to be mentally and physically prepared [for the postseason],” head coach Michael Smith said. “Playing tough contests now, we can make those coaching points and make sure the girls are getting ready for the playoffs.”

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – Three Hinsdale Central freshmen lacrosse players will play on a national stage this summer. Kelsie Chisholm, Andrea Collins, and Lally Johnson will head to Richmond, Va., this summer to play in the 2015 Brine Lacrosse National Classic. All three have been named 2015 Brine National High School All-America players. Chisholm [Central JV team goalie], Collins [freshmen team goalie], and Johnson [varsity team attack], were selected to represent the Midwest Central region at the event, to be hosted June 29 to July 2. The Brine National Lacrosse Classic brings the top high school lacrosse players in the nation to one location, where regional teams compete in front of NCAA coaches. Chisholm, Collins and Johnson also will travel to several of the nation’s premier girls lacrosse tournaments in June and July as members of the Lakeshore National Travel 2018 team.

DARIEN – The baseball conference title in the West Suburban Gold the past few seasons has come down to the three-game series between Hinsdale South and Downers Grove South. That’s the way it’s shaping up again, though the Hornets will have their work cut out for them after dropping two of three against WSG foe Addison Trail. After falling 3-2 and 4-2 in the first two games, South won Tuesday’s finale 4-2. “We can’t get the big hit,” head coach Paul Hoel said after the first two games of the series. “Pitching’s been great, we just haven’t been able to get the hit when we need it.” That trend changed Tuesday. Clinging to a 3-2 lead, Danny Schimmel’s sacrifice fly scored Matt Marrera with an insurance run in the top of the fifth. Still, the two losses against AT dropped the Hornets to 7-2 in the Gold [11-7 overall] while DGS hasn’t lost a conference game since 2013. Before play-
