SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – Students at Madison School have enjoyed a successful first year of their new broadcasting program, “Paws for the News,” according to a District 181 news release. Each morning before school, students are filmed leading the Pledge of Allegiance and reminding students of important events and school news. They’ve also created their own special segments, including My Favorite Book Monday for book recommendations and Flashback Friday, which shares historical facts. The programming is created by students and directed by Media Resource Center Director Madonna Marks. Students write some of the stories and read them on air while Marks films them in front of a green screen. The equipment used was bought for students by the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization. According to Marks, doing the morning broadcast, which teachers can access via a streaming link when it best fits students’ schedules, has made the participating students more confident. Students improved in public speak-

Darien native Andrew Salgado is releasing his debut country album today with a party at Chuck’s Southern Comfort Cafe. Photo provided
DARIEN – Country singer and songwriter Andrew Salgado returns to his hometown of Darien for an album release party tonight at Chuck’s Southern Comfort Cafe and Banquets, 8025 S. Cass Ave. “Absolutely Everything” is his debut album and has already amassed more than 2,000 album presales. Salgado grew up performing with his father’s cover band but credits his love for country music to watching John Wayne movies and country musicals with his grandfather. “I wanted to naturally sing country music because that’s what I’d heard,” he said. He said it was when he turned 21 that he started to write his own songs and decided to become a professional musician.
Andrew Salgado Country singer and Darien native “That’s a long and tough process,” he said. “I spent six months living out of my car.” Salgado said his turning point came in 2012 when he had a tonsillectomy. He said he hesitated to have the surgery because he did not know how it would change his voice. “I decided, if my voice changes, I will just change with it,” he said. He said the surgery ended up improving his voice, giving him better vocal range and a clearer tone. In 2013, Salgado’s star rose when he won the Pepsi Southern Original competition.
YOUR WEEKEND FORECAST
As part of his prize, he performed as an opening act on a 14-state tour and had a couple singles released. Salgado has opened for some bigname country musicians, but he said his biggest thrill was opening for legends Clint Black and Neal McCoy. “When you get to talk to your heroes and hang out with them, that’s cooler,” he said. Salgado has lived in Nashville for about a year, although he has been traveling to make music there since 2010. To prepare for his debut album, he said he wrote about 75 songs and whit-

tled them down from there. “I really wanted to find 10 songs that said who I was as an artist,” he said. “I just wanted to be so authentic, original, real and different.” His album release party will be a return to his musical roots. He released his first demo at Cornerstone in 2010, which has since become Chuck’s. He said he was looking for a venue that would allow him to throw a party with no entry fee, and the owners of Chuck’s offered him a room. He said the party is technically invitation only, but the public can get on the invite list if they sign up on his website, www.andrewsalgado.net. For Salgado, releasing his first album is fulfilling a dream. “The future is starting to look very bright,” he said. “That is something very new for somebody who’s struggled for a long time.”

Local villages establish safety zones for online transactions By DIANE KRIEGER SPIVAK editorial@mysuburbanlife.com CLARENDON HILLS – Those who are concerned about safety in carrying out online sales transactions now have a place to go to do business in a safe place. The latest was [Southern Illinois University] college student killed for his car near St. Louis. This program is designed to lower that risk.
On Wednesday, Clarendon Hills Police Chief Ted Jenkins talks about the department making the lobby available during business hours as a safe zone for in-person online transactions. After hours, the department front parking lot is well lit and under video surveillance with an emergency phone in the outer lobby. Bill Ackerman backerman@shawmedia.com
The murder of the Southern Illinois University student put the need for a safe zone on the front burner for the department, Jenkins said. He also had his own Craigslist story to share. “I was trying to sell an item three weeks ago that I had in a rental space,”
he said. “As I drove over there I thought, ‘I don’t even know this guy.’ If it were the other way around I would feel nervous. You could have hundreds of dollars in your pocket. What a perfect way to set somebody up and make sure they have cash in their pocket.
“You don’t want to invited total strangers into your home,” Jenkins added. “A lot of people are nervous about that. I’m nervous about that and I’m a policeman. This is a way to avoid

D-86 board to receive Manley investigation results are normally handled by district administration, but because the complaint involves a member of the board, an independent investigator was used. The complaint filed against Manley accuses her of bullying a student who was campaigning for recently elected board members Bill Carpenter, Kathleen Hirsman and Jennifer Planson. Manley and her husband, Noel, saw the student, Marissa DuPont, and an adult, Mary Sullivan, campaigning the evening of a theater performance March 12 outside of Hinsdale
South High School. The Manleys approached them to tell them that campaigning on campus violated board policy. DuPont has said Claudia Manley was trying to intimidate her, and when Manley would not apologize, DuPont started an online petition asking for her resignation from the board. The Manleys have said Claudia barely spoke to DuPont and the ensuing public outcry came mostly from people without knowledge of what actually happened. The DuPage County Circuit

OUR VIEW
Consolidation efforts a great step forward In the aftermath of the Illinois Supreme Court’s expected decision to strike down the 2013 pension reform law, the state now finds itself in an even bigger fiscal hole than the one it already faced. There’s no telling how our officials will proceed. Whether the governor and Legislature opt for raising taxes, reducing services or putting off the problem, or some combination of those options, there’s clearly going to be less money around to do the important things that government needs to do. Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti’s task force, which looks at consolidation and unfunded mandates, now is more relevant than when it was created. The state and DuPage County can’t afford to tolerate the waste that comes from duplicated services and the overhead created by duplicated bureaucracies. Chances are, everyone’s heard this by now, but it needs to be repeated anyway: Illinois has far more units of government than any other state in the U.S., with almost 7,000. No other state even has 5,000. That’s right – we could eliminate 2,000 governmental entities in Illinois (almost 30 percent of the state’s total) and still lead the nation. Sanguinetti, a former Wheaton City Council member well versed in the mishmash of agencies that lord over DuPage County, stopped by West Chicago recently to talk about her task force’s effort. “This is not the first study of its kind when it comes to units of government,” she told a gathering of the League of Women Voters of Wheaton. “Prior administrations have conducted these studies, and then nothing happens with them.”
Suburban Life Media Editorial Board Laura Burke, Dave Lemery, Matt Hendrickson, Anna Schier, Alex Soulier, Mary Beth Versaci
But the push for consolidation in DuPage already has begun, and there’s cause for optimism that it might have some teeth this time. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin has talked about dissolving the DuPage Fair and Exposition Authority, which exists solely to receive and then dole out funds to the DuPage Fair Association for the annual DuPage County Fair. In 2014, the County Board dissolved the redundant Fairview Fire Protection District and reportedly was looking to do the same to the North Westmont Fire Protection District and the Salt Creek and Highland Hills sanitary districts. And now, state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, and Democratic DuPage County Board member Liz Chaplan are teaming up to ask Sanguinetti’s task force to consider eliminating the DuPage Election Commission. In most other counties in Illinois, elections are run by the county clerk’s office. “We’ve merely asked at this point that the government task force look at that issue and determine whether there is a cost savings there that can enhance accountability and other efficiencies in terms of personnel,” Nybo said. Those are the kinds of questions we need to be asking all across the county and the state. There are going to be hard financial decisions happening in Springfield that are going to painful. There’s no way around it. Consolidation has the potential to create meaningful savings in a relatively painless fashion. It won’t solve the budget crisis all by itself, but it’s certainly a responsible place to start attacking the problem.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. As state government scurries to fill a projected $8 billion deficit in the 2016 fiscal year budget, it would seem to make sense to accept successful compromises and proven solutions already in place and instead focus on issues that truly have a significant impact on the state’s finances. One successful compromise and proven solution that now is in its fifth year of operation is the website www.publicnoticeillinois.com. PNI is a centralized, aggregated website for all public notices from the state of Illinois, units of local government and the Illinois court system. It’s a free-access website that is updated daily. For more than 200 VIEWS years, newspapers have been Dennis paid to print public notices Derossett – or legal notices as they are often referred to – and to serve as the critically important, independent, third party between units of local government and taxpayers, and have functioned as the official notification system of our court system. PNI was created by state law in 2011 and was approved unanimously by both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly. It requires newspapers to upload all notices to PNI after the notices appear in print. All of this is done at no additional cost to government. No taxpayer money goes toward supporting or managing the public notice website. With each new session of the Illinois General Assembly, local government lobbyists – whose paychecks are funded largely by your tax dollars – repeatedly push bills to eliminate public notices or remove them from newspapers and PNI in favor of their own individual websites. These bills rarely make it out of committee because, frankly, state lawmakers understand that forcing citizens to attempt to locate notices across thousands of websites doesn’t make sense. Local government groups are now using behind-the-scenes tactics to remove public notices from print and from PNI and, instead, have the notices placed on their individual websites. But, this time they have a new twist: They are claiming that having to be accountable and transparent through the current public notice process is an “unfunded mandate,” and they want to do away with it. The simple fact is that, for them, this issue is not about money; it’s about reducing transparency and accountability to the taxpayers. Local government officials should focus on the big-impact issues, allow the proven public notice solution in our state to keep on working and not spend so much time and taxpayer dollars on how to be less accountable and less transparent.

This is regarding the message that shelters are not used. People need to view the animals because adoption is a serious responsibility. You can’t just look online. Stop shooing people away from the shelters. Adoption is a serious responsibility and you don’t want them is a mess. Maybe you should consider going to the wrong people, so allow them moving – everyone would be happier. to view the animals.
Hidden gem in Lemont Bullying begins at home
If you don’t like it, consider moving from Downers Grove Last week, folks complained about spending by the Downer’s Grove Park District and about the homeless in the library. Have you ever seen how busy the Park District fields are? While I don’t enjoy the homeless hanging around the library, under what legal authority can you exclude them from a public facility? The previous week, someone was crabbing about the Downers Grove Fire Department. Is it possible the same person was moaning earlier about the ill-fated plan to build a new police station and village hall? Sounds like you think everything
What an incredible story that was shared in the May 8 edition of the [Lemont] Suburban Life. Local and nearby businesses helped to support the new program that has been introduced to the students. The article failed to mention, Lemont has a “hidden gem” right in the heart of its downtown. Lemont’s quarry trails are at the hub of an incredible interlinking trail system connecting and soonto-be [connecting] Argonne, Heritage, Centennial [and] Cal Sag trails. The state and local municipalities are in the midst of a major trail expansion that seems to be nearly complete. This program helps to introduce and bring more awareness to what Lemont has to offer from a[n] outdoor recreation and tourism destination.

I have been a witness of bullying from friends’ children, nieces, nephews and now as young as my grandchildren’s ages. This type of attack sets the stage for a child’s life. They experience low self-esteem and no self-worth. As a result, this type of behavioral attack can lead to suicide because of all the despair the person is feeling. My newest discovery is seeing this firsthand from children’s parents. They bully other parents by forming followers other than leader-type parents’ to attack other parents. Then, from their parents actions, the kids do as they see. The parents around here need to focus on their own lives and stop trying to ruin other parents’ and children’s lives. That means stop the attacks through both verbal confrontations and social media outlets.

Homemade Readers at Indian Prairie Public Library As a kid, I was fascinated by “The Boxcar Children” series because the children – Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny – make a home from scratch. They work together to create a place of belonging from broken, discarded dishes and other objects, and they care for each other when they have no one else. Homes are made. They take shape as we put more of ourselves into them. They inspire feelings such as love and security, but home also is where we create and build things with our hands and learn new skills. It is where we start, try, learn and grow. At Indian Prairie Public Library, we believe learning starts at home. We understand children first learn from watching their families interact
with the world and then by mirroring those behaviors and values. We also know reading together at home and having books in the home are both indicators of a child’s future success. According to the Program for International Student Assessment, a study that evaluates educational systems, children who grow up in homes with books, regardless of their parents’ education level or income, advance further in their education and have greater overall success. This summer, the IPPL Kids and Teens Department is celebrating the creative possibilities and learning potential of home with a homethemed summer reading challenge called Homemade Readers. The
challenge will run June 13 through Aug. 8, and we hope to encourage families to learn, explore, play and grow together while inspiring a love of reading. To accomplish this, we will be providing interactive opportunities all summer, including family events ranging from Kids Canning 101 and The ABCs of Bees to Little Hands Art and family storytimes. In addition, families can find inspiration in our Wouldshop. This year-round makerspace includes how-to books, as well as tools and materials for select projects. What is a makerspace, you ask? A makerspace is a creative, do-it-yourself space where people can gather to learn, create and invent. All ages are welcome, and families are invited to
explore together. We also hope to inspire and encourage children to read this summer with Homemade Readers. Each child can set their own reading goal, and upon completing it, receive a book plus a ticket for the grand-prize drawing. Children can re-up as many times as they want to stretch themselves to read even more. The Homemade Readers Summer Reading Challenge will kick off with a Family Fort-Building and Reading Lock-in on June 13. We hope you will join us this summer as we celebrate home and all of its possibilities.
Natalie Williams is the head of Youth Services at Indian Prairie Public Library.

U.S. trade partners from discriminating against Israel to the detriment of global trade, and regional peace and stability. Across the globe, countries seek to isolate and delegitimize Israel through BDS. This discrimination thwarts economic growth and ignores the role that Israel has played in securing the freedom of thousands of individuals who seek refuge from oppression from elsewhere in the Middle East. As co-chair of the House Republican Israel Caucus, Congressman Peter Roskam has been a leading force in the fight against the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement against Israel. I believe he recognizes this movement as harmful to economic stability and cooperation internationally, as Israel exports new products, business and technology worldwide. I applaud the congressman’s efforts.
To the editor: In a strong show of courage, Illinois [Rep.] Peter Roskam, R-6th, has called for an end to the anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement that has spread widely across college campuses over the past several years. Fostering hatred toward pro-Israel groups without opposition from university authorities, this movement fails all principles of academic freedom. Congressman Roskam has gained bipartisan support in his legislative effort. H.R. 4009, the Academic Freedom Bill, blocks federal funding for American universities engaging in a boycott of Israeli academic institutions or scholars. This ensures taxpayer dollars are not used to fund bigoted attacks against Israel, undermining fundamental principles of academic freedom. With H.R. 825, the U.S. Israel Trade and Commercial Enhancement Nina Cunningham, Ph.D., Oak Brook Act, Congressman Roskam discourages

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – As of April 28, the Hinsdale Police and Fire departments have transitioned to their new 911 service provider. Both departments are now using DuPage Public Safety Communications, also known as DU-COMM, for the management of emergency calls for service. DU-COMM services 41 police and fire agencies in DuPage County and is one of the largest consolidated 911 centers in the state, according to a news release. According to the release, Hinsdale’s first responders will benefit from the village joining DU-COMM through greater efficiencies in over-

all operations. The village believes DU-COMM provides better communications infrastructure and advanced technology. The best computers, radios and emergency resources are available to DU-COMM, according to the release. Hinsdale residents can now enroll in Smart911. The free service allows residents to go online and build a safety profile for their home phone and cellphone.
Each resident’s profile will include vital personal and medical information that would be available to emergency responders when 911 is called. Smart911 profile information can include known medical conditions, photos of a resident’s children, home address for those who call 911 on their cellphone, as well as information about disabilities, special needs and other rescue-related information. The information in a Smart911 profile delivers that information to the dispatcher automatically. Those who live, work and visit the greater DuPage area are encouraged to sign up for the service at www. smart911.com. Also with the change, residents can go online to register vehicles for overnight parking – instead of calling into the police department – via the village’s website at www.villageof hinsdale.org.

Suburban Life celebrates women By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com In an effort to continue a new tradition, Suburban Life Magazine hosted its second annual Women of Distinction Awards event May 7 at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge. The event, which stems from a tradition started by Shaw Media and McHenry County Magazine in 2012, recognizes 12 women of the western suburbs for their dedication to building and bringing together their communities. The awards ceremony welcomed 190 guests, including last year’s winners and the 2015 honorees’ closest friends, family and colleagues. “We have a remarkable group of women,” Suburban Life Media General Manager Laura Burke said. While Shaw Media has spent the past few years honoring women for their contributions, the event continues to inspire others to work toward their cause, Burke said. The recipients, who were selected by an outside committee, were given a moment to reflect on the occasion, share pieces of advice and thank those who have helped complete their mission.

Huerta Shines for Red Stars in 3-0 Win over Boston Game of firsts sees rookie forward bag two goals, assist Chicago, Illinois – Saturday’s meeting between the Chicago Red Stars and the Boston Breakers was a game of firsts. Hosts Chicago earned a convincing 3-0 victory behind standout performances by several rookies and newcomers, Sofia Huerta leading the charge with two goals and an assist. Former Wisconsin star Cara Walls also had her first tally at the pro level and Kentucky product Arin Gilliland recorded her first career assist. Goalkeeper Michele Dalton earned a shutout in her first ever NWSL match. The Red Stars came close to grabbing the lead less than six minutes in, Vanessa DiBernardo releasing Huerta and the 22-year-oldfinding her match in Breakers netminder Jami Kranich, who rushed off her line for an outstanding save. Mere moments later, Huerta was at the center of another attack, as she sprinted up the left flank and produced a wicked centering cross that was inches too tall and skipped off the forehead of Alyssa Mautz on the goal-line. Shot-stopper Dalton guarded the net for Chicago in the place of World-Cup-bound Canadian star Karina LeBlanc. The26-year-old came up with her first noteworthy block in the 16th minute, Kristie Mewis releasing a thunderbolt from the top of the box that Dalton did well to parry wide. The home side quickly reclaimed control of the play, Huerta sending in a cross from the right and Jen Hoy’s fight seeing the ball pop out near-perfectly to Rachel Quon, whose effort at the doorstep was denied by a last-ditch sliding tackle. The visiting Breakers subsequently had a chance to punish their opponents for the missed opportunities, as wide open forward Stephanie McCaffrey wished she had opted for more power on a wide-open attempt from close range, Dalton comfortable making the save. The Red Stars came agonizingly close to opening the scoring on the immediate counter. Hoy picked out Huerta in the box and the Idaho native’s clever right-footed toe poke whistled just wide of the far post. A minute later, midfielder DiBernardo had the next close look for the hosts, her powerful attempt from about 17 yards forcing a quality stop from goalkeeper Kranich.
Chicago produced yet another excellent chanceless than two minutes into the second period, as the active Mautz nearly scored on her return from an ankle injury when her attempt from the right side of the penalty area was guided over the frame by Kranich. The home side finally did get on the board in the 56th minute, DiBernardo’s well-timed through-ball releasing Huertain on goal and the young striker showing impressive composure in rounding Kranichand slotting into the open net for her first NWSL tally. Red Stars fans thought their team had another goal shortly after the hour mark. A nice combination play on the right saw former Breakers defender Taryn Hemmings take over from Mautz and crossing a dangerous ball into the area that ended up at the feet of Hoy, who had a chance to score with the goalkeeper beaten but instead fired wide of the left post. In the 70th minute, Chicago rookie and substitute Walls put on a clinic in finishing, as she blasted past her marker on a single touch off the feed from Huerta and fired a pin-point accurate ball over Kranich to double her side’s advantage. First-year pro Huerta continued to cause havoc for the Boston backline, nearly scoring out of nowhere in the 82ndminute. Facing away from the goal at a difficult angle, the day’s most dangerous player managed to turn and release a stinging drive on target that forced a reaction save from ‘keeper Kranich. Moments later, Huerta bagged her second goal, finishing at the far post on a Gilliland cross from the left that saw the rookie defender record her first ever NWSL assist. It would be the final noteworthy action of the game, as the hosts held on for the shutout and a crucial three points that puts them at the top of the NWSL standings. The Chicago Red Stars look to earn their fourth win in five NWSL fixtures when they travel to take on Houston Dash on Friday, May 15. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against Washington Spirit. DARIEN – Judy Yang is in a unique position. The Hinsdale South sophomore badminton player finished second in the state last season and has a very real chance to have more success this year. A shoulder injury slowed her down a bit this season, but a dominant run in the sectional May 7 and her title there has boosted her confidence. In short, there’s plenty of emotion as Yang heads to the state tournament, which is today and Saturday at Eastern Illinois University. “It feels weird because I was injured [this season],” the hearing-impaired Yang said through an interpreter at practice Monday. “I’m really excited to go, just really excited for state. [I have] a lot more confidence because of [the sectional title].” South head coach John Charters said, because of last year’s second place finish, Yang won’t be able to sneak up on anybody at state. He also said she is among an elite group of singles players in the state and has just as good a chance to win as anyone else in the group. “There will be about eight kids with Judy at that top level, and anything can happen to them at any time,” said Charters, whose team won the sectional tourney and is going for its first state trophy since a second-place finish in 2008. Yang took private lessons in the offseason and said that helped her improve this season, a point cemented by her sectional tournament. She won all three of her matches in two games and lost 16 points in her first two matches. The doubles team of senior Jenna Stobbe and junior Jackie Cameli also won a title without dropping a game to earn a state tournament spot. Stobbe and Cameli have been taking lessons at Midwest Badminton Club in Woodridge to improve. Stobbe is making her second appearance at the state tournament while it is Cameli’s debut. Stobbe has some advice for Cameli and singles player Sara Temelkova, also a first-time state qualifier who placed third at the sectional.

Hinsdale South badminton player Judy Yang practices Monday in preparation for the state tournament. Yang was second in the state last year and leads a group of four Hornets to the state tourney. “I would tell them just not to be nervous,” Stobbe said. “They’re excited to go and nervous because it’s new to them, but if I could tell myself last year I would say, ‘Focus on your game, don’t worry about the new surroundings.’ There’s a ton going on and a lot of people there, but just play your game and have fun.” Even though it’s her first trip to state, Temelkova is speaking and
strategizing like an experienced veteran. “It is an honor to be there. You’ve worked hard for so long that it’s like, ‘Finally,’” the junior said. “I’m all about strategy. I haven’t always been the strongest player in terms of physical ability, but this is a mental game and so I think if you can direct the game the way you want it to go, it can be a big advantage.”

Cameli already dealt with some nerves at the sectional tourney, her first, and hopes to eliminate, or at least limit, her nerves at state. “When I was playing for sectionals I was really nervous and my first game was probably really bad, but as I kept playing I was more like, ‘OK, I can do this,’ and it got a lot easier,” Cameli said. “I’ll probably be nervous [at state], but it’ll get better.”

Outlook: A 1-0 win against York on Tuesday on the strength of Kaitlyn Livingston’s goal locked up an undefeated West Suburban Silver for the Red Devils, whose record improved to 15-5 overall and 6-0 in the Silver. Now that one goal is checked off the list, they can shift their focus to the postseason. A solid defense and multi-faceted offense give Central strength at both ends of the field, but the greatest asset right now might be the team’s health. “First and foremost, we’re healthy,” Central head coach Michael Smith said. “We feel good about what we’re doing. We’re getting positive results and we’re doing it with everybody on the same page.” Erin Smith, Lauren Cangelosi, Julie Culler and JV team call-up Abby Cole have formed a solid back line in front of keeper Katy Coseglia, while Emma Dannhausen-Brun is leading an offense that has seen several players crack the scoring column. Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com Should the Red Devils win their Hinsdale Central’s Elizabeth Nelson dribbles the ball down field May 7 in a game against postseason opener, they would face Lyons Township. The Red Devils will have home-field advantage when the postseason Oak Park-River Forest or Morton in the regional final May 22. Central topped begins Tuesday.
nets will look for another deep playoff run under new head coach Jen Belmonte, who was a longtime assistant for the varsity team. To get back to the finals, the Hornets will have to overcome some injury issues that have taken a toll, especially along the back line. “We have not had one steady center back all year,” Belmonte said after a 1-0 loss against Morton on Tuesday. “We had Dakota [Dapkus] and Patricija [Miskinyte] in the back, but both are injured right now. Tess [Sobol], our starting center midfielder, is fighting a back problem. Gina Cavalli has a bad ankle. Just a lot of injuries right now.” Still, that won’t be an excuse for South, which had compiled a 7-10 record (4-2 mark in the West Suburban Gold) against mostly larger schools heading into Thursday’s senior night. Jessica Park has been a steady (and healthy) keeper all season, and the Hornets still have enough to top Evergreen Park and get to the regional final on May 22, where they most likely would face Crete-Monee. “I think a lot of the teams on the south side are a little lower than us, so hopefully we can knock them out,” Belmonte said. “Injured or not, we should be able to.”
Hinsdale Central, South gymnasts ready for state meet By BILL STONE editorial@mysuburbanlife.com WHEATON – Despite recovering from a knee injury most of this boys gymnastics season, Hinsdale Central sophomore Ryan Leahy still qualified for the individual state meet in allaround and all six events. In his first all-around competition since March 20, Leahy was third in allaround (49.90), parallel bars (8.6) and pommel horse (8.5) at the Wheaton Warrenville South sectional May 6 and also advanced at-large on floor exercise, vault, still rings and high bar. “I’ve trained all year for this so I

omore Nemmekhbayar Altandush (horse) and freshman Nolan Holmes (floor). Kujalowicz overcame struggles with high bar, his 2014 state event, and floor to earn another state meet spot. “Even if we miss a routine, miss a trick, we just keep going. I was just kind of in that mindset the whole meet,” Kujalowicz said.
Hinsdale South Hinsdale South senior Adrian Siaw and sophomore Kwam’e Lipscomb will get to cheer for each other as individual state qualifiers. Siaw won floor (9.4) and advanced at-large to state on vault and parallel
bars. Lipscomb tied for third on vault (9.1), was fourth on floor (9.1) and also advanced at-large on high bar. In 2014, Siaw reached the floor finals and tied for sixth (9.1), just .05 points from a top-five, all-state medal. Lipscomb saw varsity action last year, but not at sectionals. “He was with me for cheerleading and basically learning the same things so I was pretty confident he was going to state, just off sheer willpower. He trains (very hard),” Siaw said of Lipscomb. “I knew that I was going to make it to state if I did everything I was supposed to do,” Lipscomb said. “The events that I made it on, I want to score higher.”

HINSDALE – In the softball sense, Hinsdale Central has checked into the Ritz-Carlton for an extended stay. The Red Devils cut the ribbon on a brand-new field May 8, and the new digs are head and shoulders above the old locale. “This compared to that? It’s like a five-star hotel. It’s really awesome,” Central senior Emma Day said. “It’s beautiful.” The outfields of the old field and the new one back up to each other, so the Red Devils still have a view of the old diamond. It’s no stretch to say
they prefer the new one. A brick backstop, covered cinder block dugouts, concession stand, team room and press box are just some of the upgrades at the new field. “I think the dugouts are a huge improvement, just having a solid place to be and put our stuff, and I think the sound system is a huge plus for us because before we just had a megaphone we were using – a little microphone with one speaker,” Day said. “It’s just a huge bonus. It’s a huge step for us.” Day and fellow softball captains Faith Koffron and Annemarie Tracey joined District 86 Superintendent Dr.
