editorial@mysuburbanlife.com DARIEN – Downers Grove resident Erika Zimmerman is preparing to host her fourth annual Enchanted Farmers Market on June 7 outside her boutique The Cottage, 1224 Plainfield Road. Scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the event will feature live music, crafts, games and fun for all. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their most creative costumes to bring a little love and laughter to the Darien community. The more imaginative the costume is, the better, Zimmerman said. She is hoping there will be good attendance. “I’m so thrilled to bring this event to Darien,” Zimmerman said. “I think it will be a great gift to the people because the whole purpose of my farmers market is to let young Americans know that there is more to life than computers. There’s fantasy, magic and love.” Community members wanting to attend the event can expect camaraderie, laughter and fun events such as live storytelling, a bean bag toss and a visit from the princess Snow White, according to Zimmerman. Zimmerman’s shop has been located in Darien for 40 years. She said she

make it work the village is going to cooperate as much as we can,” Ostrovsky said. Suzanne Ostrovsky, management analyst for Hinsdale, said village officials first heard of Banke’s plans when he made his request to the Village Board, although the village has had a dedicated website for the bridge for several years at www.oakstreetbridgeproject.com. “To the extent we can figure out to
nating the demolition with contractors to make that work. “There’s a lot of community investment in the bridge, although people understand the need to modernize,” she said. Knowing there will be costs associated with the memorial project, Banke said he’s hoping the Hinsdale Historical Society and the Hinsdale Preservation Commission get on board with it, utilizing their nonprofit status to obtain possible grant money or some other tax-deductible component. “In absence of that, it would be very difficult to raise money for it,” Banke said. “We’ll see how it comes to fruition. I’m hoping to have money raised by the time the new bridge is installed. If all goes well we’ll break ground on the memorial next spring. There are endless personal accounts of memories of the bridge, said Banke, who hopes to complete the project in six months, once the new road is built. “I love this place,” Banke said. “I raised my family here. We’re slowly starting to lose things that have been fixtures in town. This will save a piece of our history.”

HINSDALE – Scott Banke wants to save a part of Hinsdale history and the village is on board with that. Banke, who grew up in Hinsdale, has launched an effort to turn a piece of the soon-to-be-demolished historic Oak Street Bridge into a sculptural memorial in Highland Park. “It’s been a part of my life since I was a little kid,” Banke said. “It’s one of those things that had this uncanny commonality pretty much for anyone who lived around here. At least one time in your life, you’ve gone over this silly bridge.” Banke conducted some historical research on the one-lane bridge and found it was actually a replacement for a footbridge built in 1875 when Hinsdale was a rural community . “In 1910, when the steel superstructure was built, automobiles were all the rage,” said Banke, who’s head of Hinsdale’s Parks and Recreation Commission. “From a generational standpoint, it’s pretty amazing. When I embarked upon this we talked about how these things affect the community. I knew this was happening. The process has been going on a couple of years. It occurred to me, wouldn’t it be interesting to try to repurpose this structure with one of the parks.” Banke recently went before the Village Board with his plan, which also includes a contest inviting anyone to design the memorial, using a bridge

Westmont Swim Club to get its own aquatic training facility Coach Cremieux says most families of club are from Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills By DIANE KRIEGER SPIVAK editorial@shawmedia.com WILLOWBROOK – When members of the Westmont Swim Club head to the pool this summer, they’ll practice in a sparkling new, state-of-the-art aquatic facility with 12 lanes. The training facility, 7580 S. Quincy St., for the long-heralded age-group swim club representing 10 different high schools is tentatively scheduled to open in July. It will be owned by head coach Adam Cremieux, making it the largest privately owned aquatic facility in Illinois. The club, which practices at Westmont High School, was looking for a new home, because the school no longer has a swim team and the pool has fallen into disrepair, said Cremieux, who has coached the club for 12 years. Cremieux declined to re-

SNAP Challenge shows how important Bridge aid can be
OUR VIEW
Now’s the time to revel in nice weather, great events In the depths of January’s icy freeze, no doubt many of us wondered why anyone would choose to live in such a frozen wasteland. In February and March, the mercury slowly climbed, but still our teeth chattered and our ice scrapers were required most mornings. Even April brought its share of unexpectedly cool weather. None of that matters now. Short-sleeve weather is here, and now we remember why we wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. As this year’s Memorial Day parades and cookouts recede from view, many of us are taking stock of what to do with the rest of the nice weather stretching out ahead. Maybe a trip to somewhere interesting, a visit to distant family or even a jaunt to a foreign nation. There’s an abundance of options. While you’re making out your list, don’t forget to factor in all the great local festivals and events right in our area. For instance, in the coming months you can look forward to: • The La Grange Pet Parade on May 30 • The Cicero American Fest from June 4 to 7 • The Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival on June 13 and 14 • FitzGerald’s American Music Festival from July 3 to 6 in Berwyn • Fourth of July celebrations in Brook-

field and Lyons, among other towns • The La Grange Craft Fair on July 11 • The La Grange Endless SummerFest on Aug. 3 • DarienFest from Sept. 11 to 13 You can find a lot more than these in our online calendar at planitlife.com. These are much more than backup plans for when your out-of-town plans fall through. Many of these events will draw folks from out of the area to our towns. It’s an opportunity for you to get out into your community, mingle with your neighbors, maybe stumble across some aspect of your own hometown that you’d never noticed before. And, incidentally, patronizing local events is a great way to vote with your dollars for local businesses and groups. Any time you can spend a few bucks locally, you’re helping to keep your local community vibrant and thriving. Just one more way it benefits you. By fall, the number of great events will begin to dwindle again, holidays aside. There will come a weekend when you’re stuck inside, listening to the winds howl, knowing that even if there was some great event going on somewhere, you’d rather not brave the elements. Don’t let yourself regret that you passed up a chance to take advantage while the weather was nice.
Write to us We want to hear from you. Letters must be no more than 300 words. They must include your first and last name, town and a phone number for verification. We may edit them for clarity, accuracy and style. Email letters to letters@mysuburbanlife.com. The deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday for the following week’s paper.

There’s been a lot of talk in the media about celebrities attempting The SNAP Challenge. Throughout the challenge, participants eat up to $4.15 worth of food per day in order get a better grasp on what it means to live on a limited food budget. This means they can’t accept free food from others, nor can they eat food already in their cabinets. COMMUNITY Like many who try, VOICE Gwyneth Paltrow bowed out Lisa after a few days, realizing how incredibly difficult the Doyle challenge is. It’s a challenge that many Bridge Communities families know all too well – because they have lived it, and not because they chose to do so. To make ends meet, many Bridge families rely on SNAP assistance when grocery shopping. This resource helps them use their paycheck to their fullest and creates extra room in their budgets for other necessities, such as gas to get to work and take their children to school or insurance to keep their cars legally on the road. As a result, some of Bridge’s most needed donations are gas cards and gift cards to grocery stores. A $25 gift card can make a huge difference in the life of a Bridge family and make their week that much easier. Also important to keep in mind, there are a lot of needed items that they can’t purchase through the SNAP benefit, such as shampoo, paper towels, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, feminine products and more. Because of these ongoing needs, Bridge has created supply closets in several of our buildings, which we open to clients on a regular basis. These closets are stocked with all the cleaning and personal care products that they need – just like every family. We always need donations of cleaning and personal care items for our Bridge families, and you can help. In regard to the writer that wants to thank the College of DuPage trustees [Kim] Savage and [Nancy] Svoboda for the service to the College of DuPage, you must kidding! … These two were instrumental in creating the chaos currently taking place, which includes wasteful taxpayer money, embarrassing publicity, investigations into possible wasteful and illegal spending matters by the administration and the very board of trustees … they were part of. Not to mention patterns of behavior by the very president they chose and supported. May I suggest to anyone else that feels they need to thank these individuals and others who served on the board before this last election that they just fade away with their tails between their legs along with Mr. [Robert] Breuder.

the club is pretty amazing.” Cremieux called Westmont’s coaching staff “phenomenal.” “We have 14 coaches and three to four on deck all the time, so our swimmers get individual attention,” Cremieux said. “Our big success is that our coaching staff is incredibly motivated. They encourage the kids to step up and take training to another level.” Westmont has a history of producing multiple Olympic trial qualifiers, NCAA Championship finalists and state champions. Co-head coach Scott Erdman said the biggest advantage of the new aquatic center is offering the ability to provide specific training that might not be available at a high school. “With our own facility we can make some modifications to have equipment cutting edge,” Erdman said. For instance, the center will house three four-lane pools, making coaching more effective.

“You don’t have to look across as many lanes when you’re talking to people,” Erdman said. “More deck space gives you a closer look and contact with your swimmers than a six- or eight-lane pool.” Additionally, Erdman said time flexibility is a big benefit. “We will be in charge of pool time,” he said. “We’ll have our own weight room. We’ll have exercise and weight equipment tailored more to swimming and triathlon training.” Erdman said he knows of only five or 10 swim clubs across country that have their own pools. Cremieux said the new facility will cater not only agegroup swimming, but also will offer learn-to-swim classes for younger kids and masters swimming for adults, as well. “It’s just a very special place to me,” Cremieux said. “Our families have been just incredible and the kids have been a lot of fun to watch grow up. We love swimming and competing, but we’re also a close knit group that enjoys each other even outside the pool.”

ransitioning to a senior living community can be filled with mixed emotions from everyone involved. You may have many questions. Is it really necessary at this time? Will we get the help and care from the staff when we need it? Will my loved one like the other residents and make new friends...? The answer to all these questions is yes. New friends are made all the time. We witness it every day here at Lexington Square. Most caring communities take time to ensure their caregivers are extremely helpful and at your service. It’s stressful and difficult for a love one to accept that they need more help with daily activities. They often feel a sense of loss. They’re experiencing loss of independence, loss of their home, and loss of the ability to perform basic tasks. It’s best to respect these new emotions, and be sympathetic to their situation. Fear of the unknown can intensify any other emotions they have. Over time, as they adjust, these emotions often turn to joy and excitement as they experience how beneficial community life can be. Discover more about what to expect during a transition and important questions to ask the communities you’re considering. We’ve put together a free guide called: “7 Questions to Ask When Screening Senior Living Communities - and Two Points to Consider Before Making Your Final Decision”. It’s an unbiased guide to help. Ask yourself… • Has your condition affected every part of your life? • Have you tried “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica®, Neurotin®, or other medications) without getting the results you want? • Do you suffer with other secondary symptoms such as falling, dexterity, muscle atrophy, etc.? • Would you rather ix the underlying problem rather than cover it up with drugs?
Topics to be discussed • What is and what are the main causes for Peripheral Neuropathy • Diabetes & Peripheral Neuropathy • If you are taking “statin” drugs - what your doctor doesn’t tell you could hurt you • If your nerves are damaged what does that mean for the rest of your body • Why your lab results do not tell the whole story

f you suffer from a single one of these torturous symptoms- numbness, tingling, burning or sharp nerve pain, then read on. A new breakthrough treatment could change your life. Neuropathy can affect every part of your life - walking, sitting, sleeping, socializing, your ability to enjoy your relationships and so much more. If you have tired “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica, Neurotin or other meds) without getting the results you want then this may be the most important information that you ever read. There is a simple reason that most treatments fail, because at best they only cover up your symptoms and do not help your damaged nerves. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects people in every walk of life. It is estimated that 20 million Americans and 60% of diabetics suffer from this disorder. There are many kinds of neuropathy, the symptoms of which include burning, tingling, weakness, numbness, paralysis, and dull to excruciating pain - especially in the hands and feet. Although many neuropathies have no known causes, neuropathy is often associated with other conditions. Examples are: Diabetes, shingles, toxins, autoimmune disorders, bulging discs that compress on nerves, spinal stenosis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and poor nutrition. Statin drugs and chemotherapy can also cause neuropathy. For the last three years Dr. Susan Kelenyi, DC of Glen Ellyn, IL has worked extensively with peripheral neuropathy patients. Dr. Kelenyi describes peripheral neuropathy as damage to the nerves, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. “This can result in pain, loss of feeling, and inability to control muscles, such as difficulty with walking. As with any other condition, there is no “one size fits all” remedy for those suffering from neuropathies and treatment may vary depending on the cause and severity.” However, many individuals can and do find relief using natural remedies. And this is where Dr. Kelenyi steps in. Of the many causes of peripheral neuropathies”, says Dr. Kelenyi, “ a major one comes from a metabolic condition. You cannot drug your way out of a metabolic condition. It requires a change in lifestyle.” Dr. Kelenyi says, “Diet is crucial when addressing peripheral neuropathy, especially in diabetics and autoimmune disorders. Harmful foods to be avoided include alcohol, sugar, processed foods, fast foods, junk foods, sodas of all types, foods sprayed with pesticides, and trans-fatty acids. Sweeteners and additives contained in diet soda and processed foods such as MSG and aspartame can negatively impact the nervous system.” As a Board Eligible Chiropractic Neurologist, Dr. Kelenyi performs specific metabolic and neurologic tests to help determine what is causing the problem. There are a few primary types of neuropathies: Large or small diameter or both as well as motor. If jerking is involved then it can be as much a problem in the brain due to trans-neural degeneration as it is in the peripheral nerve. A thorough and comprehensive exam ensures an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Kelenyi states that her peripheral neuropathy recovery program is a combination of different cutting edge techniques and protocols. “We use revolutionary breakthrough protocols in the treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy… one of the therapies offered is Horizontal Therapy which is the latest, breakthrough in the science of electro-medicine and the most advanced and effective form of bioelectric treatment available to date. I’m very proud to be the first in the area to offer this to my patients ...pain management without drugs or surgery to get lasting results.” Additional therapies may include: oxygen, vibration, spinal decompression, cold laser therapy along with brain balance therapies to create a layered approach to “wake up” the nerves so they can function again and re-educate nerve pathways that have gone “hay-wire”. Dr. Kelenyi says, “Our solutions are non-drug, non-surgical approaches, that are researched based and based on prior clinical success. The reason we achieve excellent outcomes is because we take both a metabolic and neurological approach in our program.” She says it’s a very rewarding way of practicing. “We get chronically ill people coming from all over the Chicagoland area, even out of state, to our clinic. The most important thing for these patients is results. We get results.”

hearing devices decreasing in size, many now have the ability to pair with phones and televisions via Bluetooth technology. “Many people fear the stigma of having hearing issues, but our solutions are very discrete,” Rogan says. It is recommended that anyone with a family history of hearing issues schedule a check-up. Rogan says that a common indication of hearing issues is when members of the family begin complaining. “Most people simply don’t know what they don’t hear,” Rogan says. “It’s important for people to not fear the screening process because early intervention always has a better outcome.” With a long history of helping others in the area Rogan looks to continue providing modern hearing solutions for the residents of the area. “I really like it here,” Rogan says. “I get a lot of enjoyment out of helping others improve their lives through our services.” The Susan Rogan Hearing centers are located at 419 N. orget the adage “Youth is wasted on the young”; today’s single, female baby boomers are happy, confident and healthy. Seventy-six percent of single women over 55 feel younger than their age, according a survey by retirement community homebuilder Del Webb. Seventy-four percent of respondents said they’re as happy, or happier, than they were at age 35, and nearly half (45 percent) believe their best years are yet to come. In fact, more than one in five (22 percent) say they feel more attractive than they did at 35. Highest obesity rates Recent data from the Trust for America’s Health showed that the baby boom generationis the most obese of any age group. According to the study, in 17 states more than 35 percent of boomers are obese, and in 41 states, more than 30 percent of boomers are obese. “While baby boomers are living longer these days, they may be living sicker,” said national health expert Dr. Lori Shemek. “Boomers’ attention to looks bypassed their attention to their weight’ leading to a generation that is living longer, but sicker.”
Eat more greens Something as easy as adding more greens to your diet could help slow cognitive decline and improve memory, according to new research. “With baby boomers approaching old age, there is huge public demand for lifestyle behaviors that can ward off loss of memory and other cognitive abilities with age,” said Martha Clare Morris, assistant provost for community research at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “Our study provides evidence that eating green leafy vegetables and other foods rich in vitamin K, lutein and beta-carotene can help to keep the brain healthy to preserve functioning.” Reasons to not retire Baby boomers are changing retirement, according to a recent study by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies. Sixty-five percent of boomers plan to work past age 65 or do not plan to retire. Slightly more than half (52 percent) plan to continue working after they retire. Given widespread savings shortfalls, it is not surprising that 62 percent of the boomers surveyed who plan to work in retirement and/or past age 65 indicate that their main reason is income or health benefits. What is surprising is that 34 percent plan to work for enjoyment, including 18 percent who want to stay involved and 16 percent who enjoy what they do.

DOWNERS GROVE – Hinsdale Central senior James Reilly beat an unwavering competitor at the Class 3A Downers Grove South sectional May 22 – the clock. By just .01 of a second, the Red Devils’ 4x200-meter relay is returning to the Class 3A state meet. Reilly and juniors Kareem Muhammad, Matt Hillock and Christian Bobak did not automatically advance to state with a top-two finish, but their third-place time of 1:29.63 edged the state cut of 1:29.64. Reilly, the anchor, is the only returnee from last year’s state lineup. “If we didn’t qualify I would have been really, really mad, but that just made my whole season right there,” Reilly said. “I ran as hard as I could those last 20 meters. [Head coach Jim Kupres] said we qualified by .01 of a second and I was like, ‘Of course. That’s perfect.’” The state meet begins with preliminary races May 29 at Eastern Illinois University. Senior pole vault champion Steven Chun cleared a lifetime-best 14 feet, 3 inches and sophomore Blake Evertsen (second, 9:20.56 in 3,200) and the 4x800 relay of junior Nathan Hill, seniors Griffin Gartner and Max Maydanchik and sophomore Jacob Belgrad (second, 8:05.90) also qualified for state. Chun has consistently cleared 14 feet, which is three inches above the qualifying standard, this season. He also was a contender at the 2014 sectional but only cleared 12-9. “In a fortunate way, [last year] makes today a lot sweeter,” Chun said.
Hinsdale South Hinsdale South juniors Charlie Nodus and Roman Drabchuk continued their huge seasons of improvement. After both earned top-25, all-state medals in 2A cross country in the fall, they achieved their first 3A state track berths at the Downers Grove South sectional May 22. Nodus won the 3,200-meter run (9:17.20) and Drabchuk clocked a 4:20.47 in the 1,600 to finish third and beat the 4:22.04 state meet cut. Both times were personal bests. In the 1,600 at the 2014 sectional, Nodus

Second-half effort lifts Hinsdale Central By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com

Hinsdale Central’s Millie Culbertson knocks down the ball May 26 in a sectional playoff game against York. The Red Devils battled back from a two-goal halftime deficit for a 3-2 win and a spot in the sectional final May 29.
HINSDALE – Katy Coseglia had a great vantage point to watch a great comeback. The Hinsdale Central junior keeper had a front row seat as the Red Devils scored three second-half goals to earn a 3-2 win against York in a Class 3A girls soccer sectional semifinal game May 26. “We just fought more as a team. Our forwards were doing a lot better job of pressuring and finishing,” Coseglia said of the difference between the first and second halves. “Just take a deep breath and score one goal. We knew if we could score one goal we could get another and so on.” York registered two goals on two shots midway through the first half while Central had nothing to show for three shots on frame in limited attacking time. Things changed quickly after halftime as Katie Murphy scored on a Sydney Griffin flick-on of Emma Dannhausen-Brun’s cross. Dannhausen-Brun stuck with a ball that bounced off the goal frame and chested home the tying goal with 20:42 left in the game. The junior scored the game-winner with 9:45 to go as she ran onto a ball in the area and sent a left-footed shot past the diving keeper. “At this stage of the season it’s all about goals,” Central head coach Mi-

S. Grant St. chael Smith. “Before she went on, I said, ‘Emma, don’t forget what we talked about.’ What I liked about [the tying goal] was she moved to put herself in position to score She didn’t wait for it to bounce her way. She was the aggressor.” Maeve McLaughlin pushed forward from her midfield spot while Kaitlyn Livingston and Erin Smith played strong defense and held the Dukes without a shot on net in the second half. Smith hustled back to challenge York’s Carys Hund on a breakaway late in the game and forced Hund to shoot wide. The Red Devils (18-6) will face Lyons Township at 6 p.m. in the sectional final. Central topped LT 1-0 on penalty kicks in the regular season. Smith expects his team to maintain the aggressive style it displayed in the second half against York in the sectional final. “That second half has to be our identity, and our girls are intelligent enough to understand that,” Smith said. “I would expect in that first half that we would really get after it.”
Red Devils girls track relays relish state meet showings By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Jessica Sprong was just looking for a good night’s sleep in familiar surroundings. Before the Hinsdale Central freshman could get back to her room at home, she had to take a detour to the awards podium at the Class 3A state track meet. Sprong was part of two all-state relays, including a 4x400-meter quartet that registered the Red Devils’ best state finish with a fourth-place time of 3:56.31 at Eastern Illinois University. “We were all coming in saying, ‘Let’s just get this over with’ because we want to go home and sleep in our own beds,” Sprong said. “Once we were done we were glad we ran it. I’m glad we pushed through. “Coming into it our coach was definitely like, ‘In an ideal world you would place top five’ because we came in sixth
[in the prelims]. We’re in fourth place. We’re fourth in the state. That’s crazy.” Juniors Katie Sluman and Madeline Sullivan ran with Sprong on the 4x400 as well as the 4x200 quartet that finished sixth with a time of 1:42.32. Sophomore Maddie Becker ran the second leg of the 4x200 and junior Monica Bhagavan ran third on the 4x400. Sluman said earning a state medal was the perfect way to end the meet. “When we finish, everyone knows the pain,” Sluman said. “We all respect what we’ve done for [our team]. We all came in and group hugged it out at the end. It was like ‘Yes! We’re done.’” Central also found success off the track as Ugochi Ihemeson finished ninth in the discus finals with a mark of 125 feet, 5 inches. She entered state with her sights set on a medal, and even though her throw was less than a personal best, it was an encouraging sign as she was one of three under-
classmen to reach the finals. “I started throwing discus freshman year because they didn’t have it in middle school,” Ihemeson said. “It’s so cool because I worked so hard. Since eighth grade I was like, ‘State, that’d be awesome,’ and I’m already here sophomore year so it’s crazy.” Freshman Grace McCabe clocked a 12:24.60 in the 3,200 finals. Sluman, Sprong and Sullivan were joined by Hannah Battreall on the 4x100 relay that clocked a 48.67 in the preliminaries, and Reilly Revord ran a 5:31.28 in the 1,600 prelims.
Hinsdale South Senior Sarah Leganski represented the Hornets at the state meet and clocked a time of 2:18.46 in the prelims of the 800-meter run.

Hinsdale South can’t overcome slow start in sectional semifinal By PATRICK Z. McGAVIN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com LEMONT – It was not the hoped-for finish after the greatest season in program history. Still, the fight and determination of Hinsdale South’s girls soccer team was evident until the final seconds. The Hornets staged a fierce rally and nearly pulled off the equalizer in a Class 2A sectional semifinal against Tinley Park on May 26, except a slow start doomed Hinsdale South
in a 2-1 game at the Lemont Sports Complex. Junior forward Courtney Cavalli provided a ray of hope when she finally solved Tinley Park keeper Amanda Ashmus by drilling a one-touch ball from sophomore midfielder Tess Sobol in the 78th minute that cut the Tinley Park lead in half. “At that point, we all saw the clock ticking down and knew there wasn’t much time, and we had to make something happen,” Cavalli said of her
team-best 17th goal. “We didn’t want our season to end.” Hinsdale South (9-11-2) fell behind in the eighth minute as Tinley Park’s skilled sophomore midfielder Carolina Carrillo penetrated the back line for the 1-0 lead. “We had a slow start, and we got caught a little bit on our heels there,” Hinsdale South coach Jen Belmonte said. South sophomore midfielder Erin Alajoki registered five shots on goal, including a ball from the right flank just
outside the 18-yard box inside a minute remaining that Ashmus denied. The keeper also stopped a howitzer shot from Dakota Dapkus with her foot in the second half. Belmonte said the season was not a disappointment after last year’s team finished fourth to capture the first state trophy in school history. “This was a completely different team, with only three or four players back from last year,” the coach said. “They played hard and together the
whole year. We never played the same starting 11 two games in a row the whole year because of the injuries. Still, we had a great conference run. We were beating Downers South twice. “We have a lot of young talent that saw varsity experience, and the foundation is there for us to really build on what we have. So there’s no disappointment about this year. The kids fought, and they played hard, and that’s all you can ask as a coach.”

Red Stars Roll on in 2-1 Away Win over Defending Champs Chicago, Illinois – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars remained undefeated against defending champions FC Kansas City on Saturday, bagging a 2-1 away win in the highly-anticipated blockbuster clash of the weekend. Sofia Huerta scored in her third consecutive match and defender Taryn Hemmings had the late game-winner for the visitors in meeting that had been delayed due to inclement weather and was played in pouring rain that didn’t let up at any point during the 90 minutes. Chicago nearly conceded a goal in the 7th minute, as shot-stopper Michele Dalton breathed a sigh of relief after being pressured by Sarah Hagen and attempting a clearance that bounced off the FCKC forward and rolled just wide of the right post. The Red Stars created their first quality chance in the 32nd minute. With a defender wrestling her for the ball, Arin Gilliland managed to sprint to the by-line and send in a low cross that was touched on frame by Jen Hoy and parried wide by goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. Chicago would get on the board mere moments later, Vanessa DiBernardo swinging in a corner kick from the right that would see the 23-yearold earn her league-leading fourth assist. The ball was met inside the penalty are by rookie Huerta, who redirected it through traffic and inside the left post courtesy of an exquisite touch with her right foot. Huerta’s fifth strike of the season sent the reigning NWSL Player of the Week to the top of the NWSL goal-scoring charts, where she is tied with Washington’s Crystal Dunn. Home side Kansas City had a promising opportunity of its own in the closing stages, as a long ball long through ball released Hagen and the forward released a powerful, right-footed attempt from the top of the box that whistled wide of the far post. U.S. international Hagen continued to threaten
after the break, making a strong near-post run in the 52nd minute to get her foot on a cross from the right flank, only to see her redirect roll trickle just wide of the left post. Kansas City kept up the pressure and could have scored on either of a pair of 56th-minute cornes, the second of which saw Hagen smash the ball dangerously over the bar on a close-range volley at the far post. FCKC finally drew level in the 68th minute, Erika Tymrak sending in another corner from the left and fellow U.S. international Amy LePeilbet back-tracking to head the ball down and past surprised goalkeeper Dalton for a well-taken goal. The Red Stars showed a strong response to the equalizer, as Head Coach Rory Dames’ managed to keep their mighty opponents from taking control of the match and pushing for the lead. Instead, defender Hemmings gave Chicago all three points by nodding home the rebound following a Danielle Colaprico corner kick from the left and a header by center back Michelle Lomnicki that had been tipped against the post by netminder Barnhart. Kansas City’s only quality look in the closing stages was a Yael Averbuch rocket on a free-kick from 35 yards out, the Red Stars’ Dalton doing well to leave her feet and tip the ball over the frame. It would be the game’s final chance, as the visitors subsequently slowed down the pace and held on to a crucial victory that saw them increase their lead at the top of the NWSL standings. The Chicago Red Stars look to remain unbeaten through seven regular season games when they travel to take on current Shield holders Seattle Reign FC on Saturday, May 30. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against Washington Spirit.
