tradition of quality local journalism, while expanding the Ledger-Sentinel’s and Record’s presence through digital formats. The transaction is expected to close June 26. “We have always worked hard to provide extensive local news coverage of our communities. So we are pleased with Shaw Media’s commitment to continue that level of coverage for our readers, Kathy Farren, Record editor, said. Founded in 1864, the Kendall County Record was purchased by the Farrens in 1973. The Farrens founded the Plano Record in 1976. They acquired the Oswego Ledger in 1979 and the Fox Valley Sentinel in 1980. The two papers

were consolidated and called the Ledger-Sentinel. The Sandwich Record was launched by the Farrens in 1985. “The decision to sell was a difficult one, publisher Jeff Farren said, but he added, “We believe Shaw will be able to continue providing good newspapers for our readers and advertisers with more online content in the future. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Founded in 1851, Shaw Media is the third-oldest continuously owned and operated media company in the U.S. It owns and operates newspapers, magazines, websites and other publications throughout Chicago’s suburbs and northern Illinois, as well as in Iowa.

Off-leash dog area in works By PAIGE LISTON pliston@shawmedia.com DARIEN – Families with dogs living in southeast DuPage County soon will be able to visit a dog park closer to home. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County plans to build an off-leash dog area at Oldfield Oaks Forest Preserve in Darien, which is bordered by Lemont and Oldfield roads and Interstate 55. The forest preserve board approved the plan at a commission meeting May 19 after preliminary investigations were conducted to determine the best site for the area. District Landscape Architect Supervisor Kevin Horsfall said Oldfield Oaks Forest Preserve was determined to be the ideal place for the off-leash dog area. “There is an under-served need in the southeast part of the county as it is the only part of the county where the district doesn’t have a facility, Horsfall said. “The site was in a previously disturbed natural farm field, so we

would not have to do a lot of vegetation removal there. It’s adjacent to a major roadway, and it’s a wide open space, providing the perfect opportunity to exercise the dogs. Additionally, the site will reduce pressure and demand on other facilities nearby, such as Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook and Greene Valley Forest Preserve in Naperville, according to officials. District 3 Commissioner Linda Painter, whose district includes Darien, said she saw the need for a facility in southeast DuPage County. “There isn’t a close dog park in southeast DuPage, Painter said. “In fact, there isn’t one within eight miles of the homes in the southeast area. The closest facilities are in Oak Brook and Naperville, but they are getting worn out already due to the wear and tear brought on by the dogs. Painter informally surveyed the residents of District 3, obtaining their opinions on what they wanted to see in the dog park.

CLARENDON HILLS – Call him Capt. William, thank you very much. Seven-year-old William Kottos of Clarendon Hills earned his wings recently at American Airlines Flight Academy in Dallas, courtesy of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. William, who was born with congenital heart defects, and his family were flown in his favorite plane – a Boeing 787 Dreamliner – to the training center June 10 where William spent two days inspecting the jumbo jet inside and out, walking the tarmac, checking out the cockpit, and experiencing a real flight simulator. William was even guest of honor at an exclusive captains dinner. The young flyboy, who has wanted to be an airline pilot since he was 3, got the full red-carpet treatment, beginning May 30 when American Airlines’ O’Hare Airport Chief Pilot Chip Long personally delivered his letter of acceptance to flight school. The experience was even better, thanks to a custom-tailored pilot’s uniform, just like the big guys’, made by the same company that makes American’s uniforms. Capt. Terry Burke, who hand-delivered William’s uniform, said he was amazed at William’s knowledge of airplanes. “He said another favorite of his is the ‘Triple Seven’ [Boeing 777],” Burke said. “When somebody says Triple Seven you’re usually talking to another pilot. My jaw dropped to the floor when he said that. For a 7-year-old, he was very well versed. He’s very inquisitive.” Burke also arranged for William to receive his own pilot’s suitcase, embroidered with the new American Airlines logo and “Captain William” on it, and, of course, sunglasses. “We like to think we can’t be cool unless we wear sunglasses,” joked Burke, who arranged for a local optometrist to make a pair for William. William was given his own private

Smith Museum, as well as a private tour of American Airlines’ Integrated Operations Center, the nerve center of the airline. Then he had his simulator flight, after which he was presented with his wings by American Airlines Vice President of Flight Operations Kimball Stone, head of all chief pilots. William said he, “learned a lot,” during his training. “Everything was my favorite, but I really liked hanging out with my friend, Captain Jim [of American Airlines], and, um, pulling the airplane out of the hangar!”

HINSDALE VILLAGE BOARD | 3 THINGS TO KNOW

Board OKs liquor sales at salons, new police hires By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – The village of Hinsdale created a new liquor license for salons and hired new police officers during a Hinsdale Village Board meeting held June 16.

1. Salon liquor license

The board approved an ordinance to create a new salon liquor license classification. Ten Friends Blow Dry and Style House, which is under

construction at 11 E. First St., requested to be able to sell wine, champagne and beer by the glass to customers. With the approval of the ordinance, customers cannot be given more than two glasses of an alcoholic beverage per service – determined as about 45 minutes – or four glasses in a day. The board said that it has no problem with the business selling alcohol, noting some salons may already be

serving alcohol for free to customers who pay for other services. Village President Thomas Cauley said he expects other salons in town will apply for this license now that they know selling alcohol is an option.

2. Police additions

The board authorized hiring two additional police officers at a cost of $61,400. The department is normally authorized to have 25

officers on staff, and the hires will temporarily raise that number to 27. Hinsdale Police Chief Bradley Bloom explained during a June 2 board meeting that the extra hires are needed because of expected departures from the department. One officer informed the department of his intention to retire in May 2016, while another has a pending disability claim with the police pension board.

There are also several other officers who are old enough and have worked enough years to be eligible to retire. Bloom said the department’s current staffing level requires officers to work overtime when other officers have been out on sick leave. He said he was concerned that any further decrease in the staffing numbers will lead to more overtime

Central and Hinsdale South, at a cost of $590,000 Board members Ed Corcoran and Claudia Manley voted against the lift station and roof repair bids, saying they wanted more written detail on why the projects were necessary. Manley said she would rather

see some of the money spent on the construction projects used to pay down the district’s $3.2 million Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund pension liability. As part of the district’s tentative 2016 budget, the administration is suggesting not paying down any of the liability.

Lane students benefit from 3-D printing SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – Students at The Lane Elementary School have long studied perimeter and volume as part of their classes. However, thanks to an app called Blokify and a 3-D printer, students are not experiencing those studies in a more hands on way. According to a news release from District 181, thanks to a grant from the District 181 Foundation, The Lane Media Resource Center recently bought a 3-D printer and filament to enhance students’ classroom activities. “A 3-D printer increases opportunities for hands-on-learning and learning-by-doing,” Stephanie Stieglitz, director of The Lane Resource Center, said in the release. “Using this prototyping technology, students are able to produce realistic mini-models.” More important, Stieglitz said, it gets kids to think about mathematics, art and engineering in an interactive way. For their volume and perimeter lesson, students used the application Bloki-

fy on a laptop or tablet computer to create a virtual model of a shape of their own creation. The students then used the 3-D printer to make physical replicas of their designs, according to the release. Third grade classes used the models to better understand the mathematical concepts and plotted them in graph form. Not everything went perfectly, but sometimes, Stieglitz said, mistakes teach just as much as success. As this was the first attempt to use the 3-D printer, students found that some of their designed shapes didn’t print as planned. “It’s important that we aren’t afraid to talk about mistakes and discuss the benefits of learning from each attempt so that we grow,” she said. “Now that we know a little more about our machine, we can improve our process the next time. That’s how it works in the real world; it won’t always go correctly the first time.” Stieglitz said she expects the 3-D printer to be in high demand next year at the school to help students with a wide array of lesson plans.

When the Clarendon Hills Park District’s Lions Park Pool opened for the 2015 season over Memorial Day weekend, this event served as the community’s official celebration of the beginning of summer. Located at 100 Byrd Court, the aquatics center has been a gathering place for local families for decades. To celebrate the season, the Lions Park Pool scheduled COMMUNITY a Kick Off Summer Swim VOICE Lesson Safety Day; hosted the World’s Largest Swim Lesson Kelly on June 18; will provide free Smith admission for dads and granddads (with a child paying a fee or with a season pass) between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Father’s Day; will host a Fourth of July extravaganza; and is planning for the Second Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta on Aug. 8. So all of our guests can truly have “fun in the sun,” the Clarendon Hills Park District is reaching out to encourage the importance of teaching every child to learn how to swim at an early age. Swimming lessons are available throughout the summer to babies, toddlers and children of all ages and ability levels. Diving classes and Junior Lifeguard instruction will also be offered to the more advanced swimmer. Our Ellis-trained lifeguards are among the best in the nation, however, we urge all swimmers to use the buddy system at the Lions Park Pool. Parents are reminded that every pool guest younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. For very young swimmers, parents are encouraged to remain in the water at all times – within an arm’s length of a toddler or preschooler. This is known as “touch supervision” and leads to even better safety at every aquatics center. Parents supervising older children are always advised to avoid distractions from cellphones or social conversations while at the pool. For the safety of all of our guests, only U.S. Coast Guard approved Type II and III flotation devices are allowed at the Lions Park Pool. Registration for season pool passes and open swimming lessons remains available at the Community Center, 315 E. Chicago Ave., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Daily admission tickets are sold at the pool from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week. Our website, www.clarendonhillsparkdistrict. org, has a full listing of swimming lessons, fitness classes at the pool, birthday party rentals and all other special events. The recreation and aquatics team at the Clarendon Hills Park District looks forward to building a partnership with you and your family for a fun, active and safe summer!

SOUND OFF

Madigan is the real dictator

If you’re going to call anyone a dictator, it should be House Speaker Michael Madigan. He’s mostly responsible for the mess that the state is in. He’s been in power for 30 years. Gov. [Bruce] Rauner has been in office for five months. Put the blame where it belongs.

I agree with Bob Costas

I never agree much with sportscaster Bob Costas. When he speaks on nonsports issues, I don’t agree with him much. But I totally agree with him about Bruce Jenner getting this Arthur Ashe courageous award in July on ESPN. Costas said Jenner getting the award was crass, tabloid stuff. Political correctness run amok. I could’t agree with Costas more, and he’s a liberal himself. Well, CBS will be expecting a huge rating on that night. … How sad.

stay on the road – what they’re supposed to be – there shouldn’t be a problem. Cars have a proper place to drive, bikes should have a proper place to drive. Nobody should be getting in each other’s way if they just stayed on the bicycle paths like they’re supposed to.

Biking rules of the road

In response to the writer [in Sound Off] about bicyclists being allowed to take up the whole road. He can’t pick and choose. If you’re riding in a 40 mph area you better stay as close to the curb as you can.

A response to Glen Ellyn’s overcrowding in schools

[A] response to Overcrowding in Glen Ellyn [writer] who wondered why “the board doesn’t just reopen the recreational center on Main Street and Hill Avenue that was an elementary school for years.” I’m guessing because the building belongs to the Glen Ellyn Park District and not the school district.

Just fix what you have

The Downers Grove Village Council plans to build a police station and Village Hall on Ogden Avenue. They have solid walls at the place they are at now. They should get a price to have work done where they’re at now. It’s centrally located, and I wonder if they’re moving it over to Ogden Avenue to be close to where they live. They need to cut back on Responding to cyclists on the road money spending, and it doesn’t cost $60 If bicyclists would stay on their bike million to renovate those buildings. So paths that they wanted so badly and cars quit wasting our money.

This is in response to the person who said [Gov. Bruce] Rauner was elected governor, not dictator. Well, the state of Illinois needs a dictator. We don’t need any more of these Democrats who wouldn’t recognize a balanced budget if it bit them. What we need is a guy who is going to go out and get the balanced budget and go after these people who are always asking for more, more, more – these public service unions. It used to be that teachers made a small amount of money, and people felt sorry for them. But now they’re trying to hide the fact that the average teacher makes over $100,000 a year. How many of their students’ parents make that kind of money? [Rauner] could do a better job if he just showed those free spending Democrats the door.

I agree with comments regarding toxic chemicals in our community. I’m pregnant and [I] can’t even walk in my subdivision, sit in my yard or open my windows because so many of our neighbors have lawn chemical treatments every month. It’s amazing to me that after all these years and the knowledge we now have about the cancers and other serious problems these products cause that people still use them. It is their choice, but it also affects my family, my pets and myself, which isn’t fair. No chemical is safe; think about what you are doing.

Meet Bailey, a 3 year old, high energy Hound mix, weighing 41 pounds. When Bailey arrived at HHS from a highkill, downstate shelter, she had very little training and few doggie manners. She is very smart, eager to please, responds to positive reinforcement training and is quickly learning basic commands. Bailey will benefit from a home with a fenced yard and/or an owner with whom she would have opportunities to exercise. This lively girl is very sweet tempered and is suitable for an individual or family with children at least 13 years old. If you can give Bailey the loving home she deserves, please visit her and the other dogs and cats available for adoption at Hinsdale Humane Society.

The board also approved allowing workers to remove a portion of the bridge in early morning hours, which would normally violate construction noise hours limitations. Removal will take place during two weekends, on either June 18 or 19 and June 25 or 26. The removal needs to be done

during the early morning weekend hours because that is the only time the Metra track below will be closed long enough to do the work. The village also is looking at ways to commemorate the bridge, such as offering pieces of the bridge as souvenirs and filming the removal process.

The project is funded in combination with construction and development funds and capital improvement repair and replacement funds already set aside, Horsfall said. Currently, the district is working on design plans for the park, and they are expected to be completed later this summer, according to Horsfall. Construction will start this fall or next spring, depending on the weather. The project is expected to take four to six months to complete, and all major construction should be done by the fall of 2016, Horsfall said.

Continued from page 2 According to Painter, residents wanted parking options, restrooms, a water supply, a separation of small and big dogs, trees, picnic tables and a walking path around the perimeter of the park. The 10-acre area will have a parking lot that can accommodate 42 vehicles, double-gated entrances, a 0.3-mile looped trail, an area for small dogs, trees and picnic tables, according to a district news release.

Gia Mia pizzeria fires up artisanal menu

The farm-totable pizza bar Gia Mia is a fresh addition to the dining scene in downtown Wheaton, conceived by chef-owner Brian Goewey. Suburban Life Media photos

Q WHERE: 106 N. Hale St.,

Wheaton Q HOURS: 4 to 10 p.m.

Flavorful roasted tomato sauce adds zest to rich meatballs crowned with whipped ricotta. Pancetta and fresh arugula team up in this wood-fired, Neapolitan-style pizza, sporting houseping and local honey. We left room for dessert, made mozzarella. Next up had to be woodfired pizza, so we decided on the pancetta and arugula combination, which arrived with a tasty, hand-formed crust drizzled with olive oil, and showing the tell-tale light charring on the edges. Prepared Neapolitan style, it had delectable smatterings of house-made mozzarella to contrast with the pancetta – an Italian spin on cured bacon – along with tomatoes, garlic, oregano and lemon. It was covered in fresh, baby arugula, a wonderfully peppery green.

but next time, we plan on two pizzas and some more of the creative vegetables and salads on the menu such as sugar snap peas prepared with shallots, garlic, mint, whipped ricotta and extra virgin olive oil, or the Tuscan black kale with pear, sunflower seeds, radish, candied dates and lemon. Both pasta and pizza crust are available gluten-free, and the restaurant offers a varied menu for children. As for dessert, we loved the Italian pudding and sorbet combo, an abundance of rich-

es modestly served in a mug. The cooked-cream, panna cotta-inspired pudding was a light and smooth vanilla base for the explosion of fruity flavor in the blueberry sorbetto. It was outstanding. Sweets lovers also have such temptations as Nutella pizza and ricotta fritters with chocolate chips. The service was friendly and pampering, without being intrusive, helping make Gia Mia an engaging new person-

Gia Mia

DSL • Friday, June 19, 2015 • mysuburbanlife.com • Suburban Life

WHEATON – A contemporary wood plank facade is the sleek new wrapping for the latest restaurant enterprise of chef-owner Brian Goewey, who named Gia Mia after his youngest daughter. It opened in downtown Wheaton in April and specializes in wood-fired pizza, homemade pasta dishes and small plates, all ideal for sharing the inventive fresh flavors the chef already is known for at fire + wine in Glen Ellyn, where he’s been a partner. Gia Mia describes itself as a pizza bar that emphasizes farm-to-fork Italian cooking. The interior features pale shades of wood and brick that set a warm tone, along with dangling, industrial-chic bulbs for light. A crowd set a convivial tone in the front dining room the weeknight we visited. The Blackhawks were playing a game running up to the finals, and a television there and one at the bar kept interested fans up on the score. We opted for the mellow bar area, which offers lots of stools, and a cozy dining space of its own, all the better to watch the action at the pizza oven. The controlled inferno holds court in all its red-mosaic-tiled glory in the corner and has ringside seating for diners. The wine list is extensive and offers some plucky suggestions off the beaten path, such as an Austrian white – Grüner Veltliner – for a light summer aperitif. The mixologists also proffer craft beer selections. We opened with a smallplate offering of veal meatballs basking in a zesty roasted tomato sauce and topped with little caps of whipped ricotta. The creamy cheese mimicked the velvety texture of the mild-flavored, finely ground meat. We’re glad we tried one of the unusual vegetable dishes: charred cauliflower. The delicate roasted veggie provided the perfect canvas for a palette of flavors drawn from green and black olives, radicchio, parsley, pine nut crumb top-

FREDDIE MAC MCLEAN, VA--(Marketwired - Jun 18, 2015) - Freddie Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) today released the results of its Primary Mortgage Market Survey® (PMMS®), showing average fixed mortgage rates moving lower from the previous week’s new highs for 2015 while housing data was generally positive.

Quotes Attributed to Len Kiefer, deputy chief economist, Freddie Mac. “Mortgage rates were down this week while housing data were generally positive. Although housing starts dropped 11.1 percent to a seasonally adjusted pace of 1.04 million units in May, housing permits surged 11.8 percent to its highest level since August 2007. Reinforcing this positive momentum, the NAHB housing market index rose 5 points in June, suggesting home builders are very optimistic about home sales in the near future.” Freddie Mac was established by Congress in 1970 to provide liquidity, stability and affordability to the nation’s residential mortgage markets. Freddie Mac supports communities across the nation by providing mortgage capital to lenders. Today Freddie Mac is making home possible for one in four home borrowers and is one of the largest sources of financing for multifamily housing. Additional information is available at FreddieMac.com, Twitter @FreddieMac and Freddie Mac’s blog FreddieMac.com/blog.
