Divine Consign: A trendsetter in upscale shopping SPONSORED BY By Denise Freese Furniture shopping opportunities have changed greatly in recent years. The internet has contributed to this transformation, with Amazon, Craigslist, and other websites providing various options. A relatively new entrant in the furniture buying and selling arena is Divine Consign, established and developed by Kellie Scott. After a 16-year career in law, Kellie needed a change. “I was ready to pursue a more creative path,” said Kellie. “I began purchasing, redesigning, and reselling homes throughout Chicagoland. I realized how much I love furniture and design, and noticed there wasn’t a good way for people to sell their furniture when they were moving or redecorating.” This led to the opening of Divine Consign, a Consignment Furniture Boutique specializing in affordable upscale and designer furniture. “Divine Consign isn’t an antique store, and it’s not a thrift shop,” added Kellie. “Consignment simply means we sell it for you; it doesn’t mean the furniture is old or used. In fact, many items at Divine Consign are new or nearly new.” In order to offer their customers the best furniture, Kellie and her staff have partnered with some

of the most sought-after designers in Chicago, including those with showrooms at the Merchandise Mart. “We also work with Model Home companies and individuals who have great taste and amazing furniture they want to consign,” said Kellie. Divine Consign quickly took off, with a second furniture location and Trends, a consignment clothing store, added within a year. A warehouse in LaGrange is used for pop-up events, with the most recent featuring outdoor furniture from Merchandise Mart showrooms. Kellie’s favorite thing about the store is that no day is ever the same; the showroom has new items every day. As a Board member of the Oak Park/ River Forest Chamber of commerce, Kellie has a platform to promote and make improvements to the community. She enjoys participating in many community events and contributing to various local charities.

The DuPage County Health Department is monitoring the small number of West Nile virus cases it has seen this year in mosquitoes. Spokesman David Hass said the department has seen a total of four positive tests in Downers Grove, Westmont, Addison and Naperville. The county has created a Personal Protection Index to direct the public on proper response to the virus. DuPage is currently at a Personal Protection Index level of 1, with an abundance of active mosquitoes and climate conditions favorable for the development of the virus. There has yet to be a human case of the virus in the county this year, according to the department website. The virus is spread when mosquitoes bite infected birds and then bite humans. Residents are encouraged to report the presence of dead birds with no obvious cause of death to the department at dupagehealth.org/dead-birdsighting, as it could be an indicator of the virus. Hass emphasized that residents should empty standing water near

D-86 releases Manley surveillance tape to public By DAN FARNHAM

More online

dfarnham@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Complying with the decision of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, Hinsdale Township High School District 86 has released the surveillance video from outside Hinsdale South High School showing the interaction between Board of Education member Claudia Manley, Hinsdale South student Marissa Dupont and community member Mary Sullivan. The video had been evidence in an investigation after Dupont accused Manley of bullying her while DuPont and Sullivan were passing out campaign literature outside the school the evening of March 12.

See the video online at www.mysuburbanlife.com/Hinsdale. Manley had confronted Dupont and Sullivan while attending a high school theater performance and told them that passing out campaign literature on campus violated board policy. A district investigation determined that Manley had not bullied DuPont, though investigators said her comments were mean-spirited toward the student and that she overstepped her authority by trying to police a student’s actions on campus.

The surveillance video was taken from distance and does not have sound. The faces of individuals are not visible, but Manley and Sullivan can be seen standing and talking and Dupont is seen walking around and occasionally joining the conversation. District Superintendent Bruce Law said the district did not want to release the video even after the investigation was over because he was concerned about security risks. He said the video showed where one of the school’s security cameras is located, and while the school has other security cameras, he feared someone may interpret that the camera was the school’s only camera and that other parts of the school were not under surveillance.

The Illinois Attorney General’s office determined that it was in the public interest to release the video, which superseded any security concerns. Law said that though the district is complying with the decision, he does not agree with it. While the investigation into the incident is finished, Manley still has an outstanding complaint in court against the district. The complaint was filed along with a temporary restraining order when Manley attempted to block the district’s investigation into the incident. The restraining order was dismissed in court, but the complaint was not. Law said the district has filed to dismiss the complaint.

This work will continue over the next several months as we COMMUNITY gather information and enVOICE gage in conversations around Don the future of our schools. We White soon will be sharing information on opportunities for community members to get involved! Our three-week Summer Learning Program included more than 600 students from D-181 and area schools. Offerings ranged from cooking and sculpture to hands-on science and advanced mathematics. School administrators have been hard at work in scheduling, hiring, and planning to get ready for the return of our more than 4,000 students. The first day of school is Aug. 26. Staffing is a major effort during the summer months. We are extremely fortunate in District 181 to attract highly qualified candidates. You can find a list of current openings on our website at www.d181.org > Careers. The summer provides an ideal opportunity to make improvements and enhancements in the area of technology. We are in the midst of replacing our Internet network infrastructure that is essential to daily teaching and learning. We also are following our standard replacement cycle for select student and staff laptops and tablets. Outgoing devices are evaluated according to their condition so that we can re-use them, recycle them, or resell them as applicable. We have been accepting new registrants for the upcoming school year at the new Administration Center in Clarendon Hills. We enjoy the opportunity to greet new families and welcome back our returning families. The registration process has been more effective and efficient with the new online registration system. We are preparing for the launch of a 10-year Facilities Master Plan and a decision about the long-term future of Hinsdale Middle School. I encourage you to visit our website to learn more and submit your questions and thoughts: www.d181.org > Our District. I will be attending three upcoming local events to talk with residents about facilities: the Hinsdale Farmers Market from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 3; the Burr Ridge Farmers Market from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 4; and the Clarendon Hills Library Ice Cream Social from 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 13. I hope you can stop by!

Don White is the superintendent of Community Consolidated School District 181.

Mourners stand in line July 25 at Lisle’s DuPage African Methodist Episcopal Church to get into the wake and funeral for Sandra Bland, who died in police custody in Texas earlier this month.

OUR VIEW

Bland family shouldn’t have to wait forever for the truth When a tragic death is compounded by a sense that it was a result of rank injustice, combined with a long history of similar injustices committed against the black community, the grieving that follows is understandably tinged with anger. And there’s no doubt that the family, friends and neighbors of Sandra Bland have every right to be angry. Even if it’s proved conclusively that the Naperville resident did commit suicide in a Texas jail cell, the video of her traffic stop and arrest show an interaction with a police officer going terribly wrong, and seemingly through no fault of her own. Remember, too, that this video is the last footage her family will ever see of her. In her last moments of freedom she was being intimidated, treated like a criminal – all, supposedly, over an improper signal for a lane change. But while everyone who knew and loved Sandra Bland is undoubtedly angry now, and will be for some time to come, the focus of her funeral services July 25 at DuPage African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lisle

was on who she was, and what a loss that is for that community. It would have been easy to play to the assembled cameras, to make inflammatory remarks, to make the gathering about the speakers instead of the departed and her loved ones. Any such urge was for the most part resisted, and that’s more than admirable. It’s astonishing. Sandra Bland’s family has shown remarkable patience, even as they’ve firmly demanded real answers from the Waller County, Texas, officials about what happened. Their respectful determination gives great weight to their point of view. We should not expect them to be patient or even respectful forever, however. The black community in this country is accustomed to dirty dealing and mistruths from officials, and they’ll be watching out for that, as well they should be. Hoping for justice is probably too much to expect in a case like this. It’s already an injustice, no matter what happens next. But we do hope that the full, complete and unaltered truth will come out of Waller County, whatever that truth may be.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Teachers work more and harder than you think

Michael Madigan and John Cullerton are to blame

Rep. [Michael] Zalewski’s concern for safety, crime prevention, disabled people and other services provided to various people as he stated in his news release is commendable. It follows the talking points that are dictated by Michael Madigan and used in his news statements. Madigan is trying to press

the issue to justify a tax increase on the middle class, as usual, and try to deflect blame onto Gov. [Bruce] Rauner. The governor did not create the financial problems that exist in Illinois. They are the product of 30 years of Madigan and John Cullerton controlling the state legislative houses. It may behoove Zalewski, who is a member of the finance committee, to read the state’s constitution regarding appropriations of public funds not exceeding estimated available funds. If we keep going in the same direction under Madigan, Illinois will be financially destitute.

The producers vs. the parasites

To the caller complaining about Gov. Rauner’s so-called austerity. I’m sorry, but the producers owe the parasites nothing. The welfare state creates grateful recipients and resentful donors. It’s time to eliminate entitlements and subsidies and promote charity instead.

Politicians are above the law

The feds ease off on the investigation into Hillary Clinton having kept classified emails on her personal server. She said there were no classified materials on her server – that should not have ended it. Ordinary people like us must follow federal law. Special people like politicians don’t need to. Case closed. So what else is new?

Trump and veterans

Donald Trump, you’re totally wrong on your thinking of what makes a hero. Every one of our men and women who serve in U.S. Armed Forces is a hero. Your classification of John McCain is totally wrong. Why don’t you get out of the United States of America?

Teachers work far more hours than their contracted 180 days: Meetings before and after school, planning time, required professional development, grading, administrative paper work and before/after school activities, which sometimes include tutoring. Yes, we do “technically” have about two months off during the summer. But are we really off? During the summer many teachers are seeking additional resources, working in their classrooms to prep for the upcoming school year, taking courses to further perfect their craft and enrich their students’ learning experience or working a summer job to supplement their teachers’ salary. Mind you, teachers are 10-month salary employees. Let’s put a teacher’s average salary into perspective: The average teacher’s salary nationwide is $50,000. I would say that’s a super deal!

Every time some nut case shoots people, whether for weird religious reasons or for other reasons, politicians scream for more gun control. When they do this, they are covering up the fact that federal laws are already in place to address such crimes. We have the laws we need; what we don’t seem to have is federal prosecutors to apply the laws and keep the monsters off the street. If those laws had been applied earlier, many of those people would not have been out of prison to murder people.

About 1:10 a.m. July 28, an Oak Brook Police Department officer on patrol noticed a suspicious vehicle parked at 800 Oak Brook Road. He

After searching the wooded area around the building, they located a 16-year-old hiding within the treeline, police said. GAME REPORT CHICAGO RED STARS VS WASHINGTON SPIRIT SAT. JULY 25

RED STARS: 1 WASHINGTON SPIRIT: 1

Copyright Daniel Bartel

Another Press Stunner Earns Chicago 1-1 Tie at Washington Dunn scores late to prevent Spirit’s first home defeat of 2015 Germantown, Md. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars nearly handed third-place Washington Spirit its first home defeat of the season on Saturday night, with forward Christen Press giving Chicago the lead in the first half with a stunning long-range shot. League leading goal scorer Crystal Dunn tied the match in the final ten minutes of an entertaining game that saw Chicago deliver another strong showing to remain undefeated in four straight matches. The Red Stars, had the first promising look of the matchup in just the sixth minute of play: goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris did well to palm away a powerful shot from Canucks striker Adriana Leon. Washington created a chance of its own four minutes later, but Laura del Rio’s driven shot from inside the box was kept out by Canada international, Karina LeBlanc, who cleared the ball from her area. Press would give the Red Stars the lead in the 30th minute courtesy of her second goal in as many matches since winning the World Cup with the U.S. The 26-year-old found herself with time and space inside the Spirit’s half, she took a few touches from well outside the box before unleashing a rocket past an outstretched Harris and inside the left upright. Taryn Hemmings’ excellent work on the right could have given Press another goal in stoppage time of the first half, but the forward’s near post flick was deflected wide. Forward Jen Hoy had one last look for Chicago before the break: World Cup Golden Ball nominee Julie Johnston dribbled into the box on the right and delivered the ball to the former Princeton standout, whose attempt from close range was blocked by a Washington defender. In the second half, Red Stars center back Johnston had a pair of excellent clearances on both sides of a dangerous 56th-minute shot by the Spirit’s Dunn, who unleashed a left footed shot from just outside the area, only to see the ball whistle over

the frame. On the other end of the field Vanessa DiBernardo navigated around a defender on the right and picked out Hoy, whose close range attempt forced a point-black reflex save from Harris. Moments after Chicago defender Samantha Johnson’s 80th-minute challenge against Washington’s Dunn in the box was ruled to have been fair, the Spirit striker tied the match from the run of play, pouncing on the rebound from a blocked Christine Nairn effort. After controlling the ball, the 23-yearold Dunn drove a low, left-footed shot inside the left post that gave goalkeeper LeBlanc no chance to save it. Chicago immediately responded, but rookie sensation Sofia Huerta saw her right-footed curler from the left side of the box saved in spectacular fashion by Harris, who left her feet and tipped the ball out from behind her before it could find its way inside the far post. The Spirit subsequently created a pair of chances to win the game. First, substitute Hayley Raso released a cracker of shot that took a deflection and went wide of the left upright. Then, Ali Krieger found Dunn on the right, who then drove into the penalty area before firing toward the near post to force a diving save from LeBlanc. It took one last goal-line clearance from the Red Stars’ Johnston for the visitors to bag a valuable away point from the draw, which puts Head Coach Rory Dames’ squad two points ahead of second-place Seattle Reign FC in the standings. The Chicago Red Stars look to defend their top spot in the NWSL standings when they return home for an August 1 clash with defending NWSL champions FC Kansas City that is likely to feature several World Cup winners on both teams. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

HINSDALE – It didn’t take long for the newly opened Fuller House to distinguish itself from other restaurants in downtown Hinsdale. A large and lively outdoor patio set the scene before my date and I entered an equally vibrant pub atmosphere. Greeted just inside the front door by the hostess, we first noticed the expansive bar centered on the ground floor of the two-story establishment. With the restaurant just a stone’s throw from the train station, it simply screams to be a gathering spot for the after-work crowd. Fuller House offers a variety of specialty cocktails, plus a solid craft beer selection we enjoyed sampling. Hungrily taking up our menus, we scanned the wide array of salads, pizzas, burgers and other hand-held items, opting for an appetizer to start. We considered the woodfired pretzel sticks with honey mustard and pimento cheese sauces, as well as a cheese and charcuterie plate, before settling on Wisconsin cheese curds with a zesty Southwest ranch dipping sauce. Lightly breaded and fried to a perfect crispiness outside, the curds had a wonderful texture. Several main courses tickled our fancies. My date contemplated the fried buffalo chicken sandwich with blue cheese crumbles, along with several of the wood-fired pizzas prepared in the blazing oven in plain sight on the edge of the dining area. She ultimately decided on the 10inch arugula and prosciutto pizza with lemon, garlic and an olive oil drizzle. None of the flavors were hidden – the earthy taste of the arugula, the saltiness of the prosciutto and the creaminess of fresh mozzarella – all intertwined in a delightful combination. Nearly every entree sounded appetizing to me, including the fish and chips, brisket tacos and pulled pork sandwich, but the burgers were

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com It used to be that elite high school athletes had three jerseys in their closets – one for a fall sport, one for a winter sport, and one for a spring sport. Many high school athletes today still have three jerseys in the closet, though things are slightly different. Increasingly, those jerseys are home and away high school jerseys for one sport and a uniform for a club team in that same sport. More and more high school athletes are choosing to specialize in one sport with year-round competition aided by a plethora of AAU and club programs. The downside is fewer well-rounded athletes representing their high schools, but there are plenty of benefits for high school athletes willing to specialize in one sport by playing for clubs and on AAU teams in the offseason.

Options abound

Hinsdale Central’s Peter Blust (left) goes up for a shot March 6 in a regional championship game against Downers Grove North. Blust had a busy summer playing AAU basketball with the Fundamental University program. “We’re not run as a business so we don’t recruit players, but we wind up getting a lot of kids trying out here because of the reputation we’ve built over the years,” Longshots founder and president Rob Rooney said.

Benefits and drawbacks

For the athletes, there are obvious benefits to devoting time to a club team in the offseason. Those benefits include more hands-on coaching, time to work and improve on specific skills, and a chance to play against elite competition in front of college coaches. In baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball, the college and high school seasons run concurrently, which limits the amount of time college coaches can devote to watching prospects in person. There also are NCAA restrictions re-

garding the amount of contact coaches can have with players at certain times, restrictions that are lessened during the summer, and since college coaches aren’t busy coaching their teams they are able to flock to the large tournaments and watch hundreds of the best players from across the country compete. “High school volleyball is not where the scholarships come from,” said Sue Keck, 1st Alliance Volleyball Club director and founder. “You pretty much have to play club to get that scholarship.” In the short term, a strong showing in a tournament in front of college coaches is a great way to gain notoriety and can lead to a next-level opportunity. Even if a scholarship doesn’t come at the end of the summer, playing against elite competition in the offseason is a great way to improve. The invite-only Beverly Bandits 16U

Both sides of the line?

There are plenty of options available for high school athletes looking to stay competitive in their sports in between high school seasons, each one offering a little something different. Some programs focus on playing in highly-competitive tournaments with the thought being the competition will make players better, while other programs balance skill development and live competition. There is something to be gained from staying sharp in the offseason and playing outside of high school, and there are some tangible benefits in the form of college opportunities, but that’s for each athlete to decide. “If you want to test yourself against the kind of competition you see at the AAU level, it’s going to give you an edge as a player,” Mercury Elite and Downers Grove North boys varsity basketball coach Jim Thomas said. “But I don’t tell the kids at Downers North they have to play.”

Sports Performance is one of the elite volleyball clubs in the country. Its 18U red and 18U elite teams won AAU national titles in June. It’s not just volleyball players who have a plethora of competition options in the offseason and are benefiting from extra coaching. AAU basketball is busy in the summer with players competing in tournaments across the country with area teams such as Chicago Lockdown, Illinois Wolves and Mercury Elite for boys and Illinois Lady Lightning for girls. Hinsdale Central senior Peter Blust generated some college interest playing AAU basketball with Fundamental University this summer. Traveling teams also are huge for baseball, softball and soccer players, and the competition just as fierce. Some soccer players choose to forgo their high school teams and focus solely on club ball. Hinsdale Central graduate Grant Lillard starred for Chicago Fire Juniors in high school and now plays at Indiana University. Baseball and softball players also have a number of offseason options. Top Tier Baseball draws from across Illinois and northwest Indiana. Longshots baseball is based in Downers Grove but draws from a wide area, which wasn’t always the case.

softball team is an extreme example of a travel teams . In addition to players from south suburban Chicago and northwest Indiana, the Bandits have players who hail from Indianapolis, northern Wisconsin, Virginia and West Virginia. With so many far-flung players, practice during the summer is nearly nonexistent. “In the summer it’s usually just [playing on] weekends,” said Ron Havelka, who coaches Downers Grove South softball in the spring and is an assistant with the Bandits in the summer. Some travel and club teams focus on competing in games, while others incorporate practices into the routine. Longshots baseball works on position-specific skills during fall practices and has a winter program three days per week. Joe Donovan, a Westmont High School baseball player from Clarendon Hills, already has committed to Michigan and has played with some elite travel teams, including the elite Prairie Gravel squad. He has since transitioned to 29ers baseball, which has a more local flavor. “Now that I committed to Michigan I’m not worried about being recruited by college coaches,” Donovan said. “I get a lot of instruction and all the [29ers] coaches are quality guys.”

Lots of sports options for athletes looking to specialize ic. The playoffs took place all over the country. As for girls soccer, the Elite Clubs National League is similar to the boys version. The year-round, travel-oriented league formed for the 2009-10 season. Local club Eclipse Select won the U-16 ECNL title last year. Unlike on the boys side, the girls can play for both club and high school, although not all do both. In the Class of 2015, Hinsdale Central’s Sydney Griffin and Maeve McLaughlin played for both Eclipse and Central this past year.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Athletes who decide to specialize in one sport have plenty of options to choose from. Club and AAU teams not only offer top-notch competition, but also the chance to get noticed by coaches at the college level. Here are just some of the organizations in the area that provide playing opportunities outside of high school and junior high.

Baseball

Longshots Baseball, based in Downers Grove, has sent hundreds of players to college programs in 22 years of operation. Based out of Acceleration Sports Performance in Naperville, 29ers Baseball has a local flair. Top Tier, which bases its high school program at The Max in McCook, and DuPage Training Academy in Carol Stream draw from across the western suburbs.

Softball

Bandits softball, which includes the Beverly Bandits team and Lemont player Maddy Vermejan locally, has invite-only teams across the country. Illinois Chill is more local but plays in tournaments throughout the country. The Lemont Rockers and Downers Grove Rebels feature several local players.

Tennis

Basketball

The AAU basketball scene has grown significantly in relevance in the past 20 years and a number of locally based teams are part of that growth. On the girls side, Lady Lightning is one of the premier programs; it starts with programs beginning in third grade and goes all the way through high school. Lady Lightning had 11 players make college commitments in the Class of 2015. As for the boys, Chicago Lockdown, Illinois Wolves and Mercury Elite all have local players. Lockdown was founded in 2011 by Joe Niego, who is a former NBA player and the father of Lyons Township players Harrison and Connor Niego. Hinsdale Central standout Matt Rafferty also was a standout for the Lockdown. The Illinois Wolves also have a local tie with Mike Mullins founding the organization in 1999. Mullins had two sons, Bryan and Brendan, play at Downers Grove South before going on to play, and now coach, college basketball. Wheaton resident Dave Ruggles founded Mercury Elite and has had a number of local players go through the program.

High school tennis teams typically boast some solid talent, but the level of competition at United States Tennis Association events gives athletes another outlet to test themselves. Kolie Allen from Glenbard East, Martin Joyce from Hinsdale Central, and Meg Kowalski and Gianni Ross from Lyons Township have found success on the USTA circuit this summer after starring for their high school teams during the most recent school year. Ross elected not to play high school as a freshman and then joined LT’s squad this spring, eventually losing to Joyce, an Ohio State recruit, in the state final.

Volleyball Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com

Hinsdale South’s Paola Gonzalez eyes the ball July 21 in a match against Metea Valley at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora. A high school summer league at the Great Lakes Center supplemented the summer club volleyball season.

Soccer

Recent changes in the soccer club landscape have had a major effect on high school teams. On the boys side U.S. Soccer moved its Development Academy league, a nationwide collection of elite clubs in the under-18 and under-16 age

levels, to a 10-month season starting in 2012. That meant players had to choose between playing for their club or their high school, and a number of top players have gone the club route. On July 18 the Chicago Fire’s U-18 team won the national championship in the

league with local products Andrew Gutman (Hinsdale) and Louis St. John (Clarendon Hills) on the roster. The team played the bulk of its schedule in the Midwest-based Mid-America Division along with other Chicago area teams, Sockers FC and Chicago Mag-

Illinois is a hotbed for volleyball (Loyola University won the last two NCAA men’s titles, besting Lewis University this year), and club programs such as Sports Performance in Aurora and 1st Alliance, which practices at The Max in McCook, stoke the fire with nationally competitive teams stocked with talent from the area. Both programs have double-digit Division I players in each graduating class and attract talent from all over the Chicago area.
