Forest Preserve District plans repairs to historic Graue Mill

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com

T

he Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is planning to invest thousands of dollars to revamp a pair of its historic buildings in the coming months. Both St. James Farm in Winfield and Graue Mill in Oak Brook will be getting a construction face-lift. Kevin Horsfall, the district’s director

of planning, said the Graue Mill project will be the bigger of the two, coming in around half a million dollars. “Over the years, flooding at Salt Creek has taken a minor toll on the building, so we want to make it a more resilient structure in the future against flooding to make sure the mill can be appreciated by future generations,” he said.

Burr Ridge vet flies high with Honor Flight Chicago SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BURR RIDGE – Clarence Day, known to his friends as “Ollie,” said coming home was the best part of his recent trip to Washington, D.C. But that’s not because he didn’t enjoy his tour of Washington, D.C.’s monuments and memorials. It was just that, well, there’s nothing quite like being greeted at the airport by a crowd of admirers cheering your return. Day, a resident of the King-Bruwaert House in Burr Ridge, was one of a group of recent participants in Honor Flight Chicago. Honor Flight takes WWII veterans, free of charge, on a flight from Chicago to Washington, D.C., so they can tour the memorials and monuments in the nation’s capital, according to a news release from the King-Bruwaert House. Day was one of 90 veterans to take the trip July 29. Day served as a first officer and pilot

He led flights with troops and equipment to Brazil, West Africa, India, Scotland, England and Ireland, according to the release. Day said the Honor Flight experience was “fabulous from start to finish.” On the plane ride home, Day was presented with 45 cards thanking him for his service to the country and was greeted by thousands of people upon exiting the plane. The Chicago Fire Department even spayed an arch of water over the aircraft when it landed. “I think coming home was the best part,” Day said. “What a wonderful experience.”

• REPAIRS

Continued from page 1 Horsfall said it would be the first major work done to the 163-year-old building since the 1940s and ’50s. It had been hit hard by flooding, including more than 4 feet of water in its basement during the 2013 floods. Rus Strahan, vice president for the board of directors for the mill and head miller, said the repairs not only would help stabilize its basement and floors but would get the actual mill back up and running for the first time in three years. Cornmeal grinding represents not only a revenue stream for the mill, he said, but a major attraction as well. “Guests, young people especially – we let them actually push the button that starts the big mill,” he said. “They always get a thrill to see the stone turning.” The mill runs its cornmeal grinding operation with a temporary electric grinder that takes longer – only 50

Strahan said the mill will close ear-

ly this year – after Labor Day – before reopening in April 2016. “It’s a bridge between today and yesteryear,” he said. “Our job is to teach young people how their ancestors lived, and what life was like for their great-grandparents in the same area, but a different era.” Horsfall said the Board of Trustees also approved an $89,000 contract July 28 to do a preliminary design to renovate the St. James Farm indoor arena. As part of the board’s master plan for the farm, the district aimed to provide more amenities and activities on

the property. Most buildings are not up to code and do not have running water or bathrooms – including the arena, which is only used to exercise horses from Danada Equestrian Center during the winter and as a staff support building. The arena will be the first of several buildings eventually opened up to the public, Horsfall said. Architecture firm Cordogan Clark and Associates will look at the more than 13,000-square-foot arena to assess what renovations must be done to the property while the district works on bringing water and sewer to the entire farm. The process also will include an open house to solicit feedback on what the public would like to see from the work. Horsfall said the district anticipated about $2.1 million for a full renovation. District President Joe Cantore expressed a positive outlook on the farm’s future during the July 28 meeting. “I don’t know how many times in the last four months that I’ve heard that St. James Farm is just getting better and better,” he said. Horsfall said it was the first step in the process of rehabbing both the mill and St. James Farm, and said the district would present future options to the board and public. Red Stars’ No Longer Unbeaten After 2-1 Loss to Portland Thorns FC come-from-behind win with Long brace Portland Ore. – Allie Long’s two goals helped the Portland Thorns break the Chicago Red Stars six game unbeaten streak on Sunday night. Midfielder Alyssa Mautz had given Chicago the lead in the first half, but it wasn’t enough to fend off Portland. The Thorns took home the three points in front of raucous home crowd, and subsequently put themselves in contention for a playoff spot. Mautz got the Red Starts on the board first with her 29th minute wonder goal. The midfielder ran up the right flank, beat her defender just outside the box, and unleashed a long range shot that floated into the left side of the goal. Less than ten minutes later, the Thorns would capitalize on a miscommunication between Chicago goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc and defender Abby Erceg. There seemed to be a mix up in the box when Erceg went to clear Tobin Heath’s cross, LeBlanc also went to clear the ball and the pair got tangled up, allowing Allie Long to tap the ball into an essentially open net.

second half, but the Thorns defended well. The Red Stars brought in three forwards towards the end of the second half, though each foward was well marked every time they received the ball. Christen Press had four shots in the match, including a beautiful one touch shot from long range that hit the lower left post in the 36th minute. Late in stoppage time Press had what looked like an equalizer, but Portland keeper Michelle Betos pushed the close range shot over the crossbar. The Chicago Red Starts look to restart their winning ways when they face visiting Sky Blue FC on Wednesday, August 12, followed by another home match against leading NWSL goal-scorer Crystal Dunn and fellow title contenders Washington Spirit on Sunday, August 16. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by clicking here or by calling 773-698-6001.

Long netted the lone goal of the second half, sending a low hard shot into the lower left corner of the net. Chicago kept firing through the

OAK BROOK – When we decided to go off the conventional path in our search for a new restaurant, we gained the added taste of a quick getaway at Oak Brook Hills Resort. The expansive Hilton property on the border of Oak Brook and Westmont features a championship golf course and hotel that is home to Windows restaurant. Regularly open for breakfast and lunch, its evening fine dining experience is available during high seasons, which meant we could enjoy a Saturday date night. A lush blooming landscape accents the fairway views. Technically, the titular windows at the restaurant open onto a glass hallway overlooking a pool, walking path and geyser-style fountain that’s part of a water attraction. Below Windows lies the spacious Chef’s Garden teeming with herbs, vegetables and tomato plants, where a sign notes the daily harvest is designated for fresh dishes in the hotel kitchen. It was a happy portent of rich flavors to follow. Seated in a comfy, tall booth muffling nearby conversation, we settled into the attractive dining room and ordered a butcher’s platter appetizer. Although we picked the smaller size with a choice of two each from an array of gourmet cheeses and cured meats, it arrived with servings ample enough for four or more guests. The delicious items included such standouts as a decadent, house-made salame cotto. Accompaniments vary, and we were treated to artisan pickles with just the right touch of kick, and local honey with honeycomb, which paired beautifully with the triple-cream Brie. For the next course, I was tempted by the sausage and kale soup made with house-made sausage, Parmesan broth, white beans and bacon, but then I spotted the Porter-braised short rib entree. Instead of mustard spaetzle, I asked to substitute

College athletic conferences find convenience in headquarters in Midwest By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com

Live video online

The Big Ten Conference’s headquarters in Rosemont are hard to miss from I-294. The conference’s prominent logo sits on the side of a building facing the highway from the east and is just across the highway from O’Hare International Airport. However, the Midwest’s biggest, most news-grabbing conference isn’t the only one based in Chicago’s suburbs. The Summit League, a Division I conference which claims Western Illinois as the only in-state member, is headquartered in a mixed-use office building on Butterfield Road in Elmhurst. The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, a Division III league which includes Elmhurst College, Wheaton College and North Central College among its eight members, is based in Naperville. So what drew these leagues to base themselves in Chicago’s suburbs? For the CCIW, it was a matter of convenience. The league moved its office to the campus of North Central College in Naperville in 2002, the same year that Chris Martin took over as commissioner of the league. The previous commissioner was a long-time athletic administrator at Millikin University and the league was based out of that school’s Decatur home until the move. Martin said the North Central campus in downtown Naperville has been a great host. “The office was moved to Naperville for two reasons – being close to Chicago and because it is centrally located,” Martin said. “All of the CCIW schools are within easy driving distance. We host nearly all of the conference meetings at North Central. … I don’t think it’s any surprise that our office resides in the area since the CCIW schools recruit heavily in the area.” The Big Ten has a history of being located in the Chicago suburbs. The conference was founded in Chicago in 1896 and has maintained its roots near-

Tom Douple is commissioner of The Summit League, an NCAA Division I athletic conference based in Elmhurst. The nine-team league includes schools in seven states. by. The conference had a home in Schaumburg for 18 years before moving closer to O’Hare to a location in Park Ridge in 1991. In 2013, the league moved to its new headquarters in Rosemont, which is a short drive just southwest of the Park Ridge building. The reason for that move, as explained by Deputy Commissioner Brad Traviolia, was largely because they had outgrown the Park Ridge space. “We just needed to expand so we looked at options of leasing space and buying existing buildings and came across an opportunity to build a new headquarters in Rosemont,” Traviolia said. The new MB Financial Park at Rosemont, which includes the Big Ten’s headquarters, features hotels, restau-

rants and bars, providing guests a good place to visit. “It’s the biggest market of Big Ten alumni in the country. We were able to attract and attain a very solid workforce with Chicago and Chicagoland being the backdrop, and with O’Hare being so close it’s easy to be a hub,” Traviolia said. “We have meetings and it’s easy to host them with all the accommodations here for them.” Given that the conference wanted to remain in the Chicago area and had enjoyed being close to O’Hare already, the number of potential locations seemed narrow. Traviolia said the factors included being able to handle the growth of the staff and improving the meeting experience for guests. “It’s a neat opportunity with Rose-

mont,” Traviolia said. “They had to reinvent what this area was and it serves very well with the proximity to hotels and restaurants. ... It’s worked out really nice for us.” The market size and having two major airports was also a draw for other leagues. The Summit League was founded in 1982 and at one time included schools such as UIC and Valparaiso as members. The league has gone through some changes – it was once known as the Mid-Continent Conference and membership has fluctuated slightly over the years – but moving the headquarters out of Elmhurst was never a consideration.

Putting College athletic conferences share homes in suburbs on a show By JASON ROSSI

jrossi@shawmedia.com

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The premier event for The Summit League is the men’s and women’s basketball championship tournaments hosted at the same time as the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center each March in South Dakota. The hoops tournaments are just two of 19 championships the conference runs each year, and setting them up is a year-round endeavor for Myndee Kay Larsen, Senior Associate Commissioner for The Summit League. “As soon as a championship is over we’re already figuring out who the next host will be and we start with them immediately to get facilities booked and hotels targeted, so that’s kind of the first thing, getting it on the calendar and making sure we have everything planned,” Larsen said. “Then throughout the year we’re checking on hospitality, officials, security and all the things that go into an event and right before we’re gearing up and heading out. It’s a process that goes over the whole year.” Even though the basketball tournaments, which USA Today billed as the best-kept secret of March Madness, have a permanent home in Sioux Falls, S.D., that doesn’t make planning them any easier for Larsen. In fact, planning the league’s main attraction takes a little extra work. “We do our men’s and women’s basketball as a joint event so all our presidents, athletic directors and media can all come to one place, so it’s huge. Eight men’s teams, eight women’s teams spread over a fourday event,” Larsen said. “The games are the main show, but there’s a lot of other things going on. For our league, since we don’t sponsor football, basketball is our premier event and is the one that gets the most national attention with the NCAA Tournament and March Madness, so we try to make it live up to those standards.”

In addition to The Summit League, the CCIW and the Big Ten, there is another active conference in the suburbs, and another one that was formerly based in the suburbs. The Division III Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League, which was established in 2014

and includes North Central College and Benedictine University, is based in Naperville. CCIW Commissioner Chris Martin also heads that league, which includes other Illinois schools as well as institutions in Iowa, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. At one time run out The Summit League offices, the Great West Conference was

started by Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple in 2004 to give several then-independent football-playing schools a league in which to play. Eventually, Ed Grom, a former Associate Commissioner of The Summit League, took over as Great West Commissioner and moved the headquarters to Naperville. The

Great West has since folded with the member schools aligning with other conferences. “The Great West Conference was a conglomeration of independent schools who just moved up to Division I,” said David Brauer, Summit League Assistant Commissioner for Communications. “We helped them schedule games and gave them a league circuit.”

Continued from page 21 Western Illinois in Macomb, IUPUI and Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne are all about three hours from headquarters, while the University of Denver, Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla., and North Dakota State represent the farther reaches of the nine-team league, but being headquartered in Elmhurst is a plus. “With the two airports here, it gives us access to get anywhere, so that’s a huge benefit,” Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple said. “Being close to the eastern schools in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, we can drive there and to Macomb. It really serves as a neutral headquarters, which is a positive.” Douple, who is entering his 11th year as Summit League Commissioner, said that twice a year, presidents, athletic directors and other administrators from the member school scome to the Elmhurst area to meet, and a third meeting takes place at the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments that take place concurrently in March at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. Throughout the year, Summit League officials visit the member schools on a regular basis, at least once a month according to Douple, so easy access to transportation hubs is a key. Being close to Indianapolis, site of NCAA headquarters, is also beneficial, and that proximity helped Douple serve on the NCAA leadership council and on the certification and championships committees. In the shifting landscape of college athletics, however, successfully running a conference takes more than just setting up meetings a few times a year.

Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com

Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple talks about the athletic conference Aug. 6 in the league’s Elmhurst offices. Douple is entering his 11th year as commissioner. Following NCAA compliance guidelines is a constant endeavor, as is planning the Summit League’s 19 sports championships throughout the year. Part of Douple’s job is looking for new members. Sometimes that could mean an institution reaches out to him about membership, but more often it entails Douple identifying potential candidates. In recent years, he has successfully helped the University of Nebraska-Omaha, among others, make the move from NCAA Division II to Division I as Summit League members. Successfully ushering schools to the Division I level is one of the highlights of Douple’s tenure. “We have a number of things we’re really proud of, but bringing in a number of

institutions from the Division II level that have adjusted extremely well and are very competitive at the Division I level is something we’re very proud of because it shows we identified them to begin with as really good Division I schools and now it’s been proven over the course of time,” he said. The college conference landscape changed dramatically a few years ago when major leagues such as the Big Ten, SEC and Big 12 added schools. Those changes affected some of the smaller conferences, but the Summit League made it through the shakeup and has a bright future ahead of it, according to Douple. “[The future is] very bright. We have schools that are real-

ly committed to academics and athletics. Last year I think we had five new or renovated basketball arenas that were being built or just coming on line. ... North Dakota State is building a new arena, South Dakota State is going to refurbish their arena, the University of South Dakota is building a whole new arena, and this fall Omaha will move into their new basketball arena. “Schools don’t make a commitment to build these multi-million dollar arenas if they’re not serious about being competitive and improving their programs. I think that in itself speaks volumes about the future of the league.”

Staff writers Dan Santaromita and Scott Schmid contributed to this report.
