dfarnham@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – After several delays, Kenny Construction and the village of Hinsdale are now shooting for Aug. 20 to remove Oak Street Bridge. Hinsdale Village Engineer Dan Deeter said the construction company cleared a major hurdle in the process Aug. 5, when the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway’s structural department approved the process to remove the bridge. Kenny Construction was required to submit its plan to remove the bridge for BNSF to approve before it could move forward with the project. Deeter said they are targeting Aug. 20 because the date appears to be the soonest they could get a crane. Once Kenny Construction is able to secure the crane, they will need to schedule a time with BNSF when it could shut down all of its rails that run under the bridge. The construction company previously tried to schedule for a Sunday because that is when it could stop the trains for the longest period – from 1 to 5 a.m. However, Deeter said Aug. 20, which is a Thursday, should still work because workers should not need four

It is even possible BNSF could cancel the project the night it is scheduled if there is a train it had to reschedule to run during the time of the removal, he said.

Catching the wind By MATTHEW HENDRICKSON mhendrickson@shawmedia.com

Hendrickson: Bruce, can you start off by telling our readers a little about yourself? Metcalf: I am a retired dentist and have three sons, four grandsons and two granddaughters. I’ve lived in Burr Ridge for 40 years. Hendrickson: What got you interested in sailing and racing boats? Metcalf: I’ve been sailing since I was a little boy. Two out of my three sons like to race sailboats. I’m lucky to be able to race with my kids and it’s a great way to spend time with my family. We’ve done well over the years. Hendrickson: What’s the most difficult part of competing in this race? Metcalf: Getting along with your

Each year, boats and sailors from around the world, including Burr Ridge’s Bruce Metcalf, go to Chicago to race 333 miles to Michigan in a race known as the Mac.

BURR RIDGE – It’s billed as a race like no other. Each year in July, some of the best sailors in the world head to Chicago to participate in the Mac – a 333-mile race from Chicago to Mackinac Island in Michigan, according to organizers. While Lake Michigan is not the high seas, the race takes place in rain, shine or with a storm on the horizon. For Bruce Metcalf, a longtime resident of Burr Ridge, the experience is all about family bonding. Metcalf competed for his 36th year in The Chicago Yacht Club’s 107th Race to Mackinac hosted July 10 and 11. Suburban Life Editor Matthew Hendrickson recently talked with Metcalf through email about his experience on the water.

kids – just kidding. The most difficult part of the race can be the weather. We’ve hit a few storms over the years – but they’re also the most exciting at the same time. Hendrickson: How was the weather during the race? Metcalf: It actually didn’t affect anything, it was just mainly cold. We didn’t hit any of the thunderstorms at all.

YOUR WEEKEND FORECAST

Hendrickson: Who makes up your crew? Metcalf: The past few years it’s been just me and my sons and grandsons. My friends used to join, but not anymore. Our crew works well because of the strong family dynamic. My sons are very good at driving the boats. Another huge component is knowing which part of the lake to head toward that will hit the wind. Hendrickson: You placed 11th out of 127 racers. Were you happy with your result? Metcalf: Yes, definitely. We were first overall 10 years ago and that’s [where we should have placed] every year. We’ve been first, second [or] third in our section 16 times – that’s really an accomplishment.

Hendrickson: How do you train for these events? Are there other races that you participate in? Metcalf: We actually don’t train anymore. We used to race a lot, however now we only race three times a year: Verve cup, the Mac and NOOD Regatta. Hendrickson: What do you find the most rewarding about your experiences racing in the Mac? Metcalf: Getting to spend time with my kids and grandkids. Hendrickson: Anything else you’d like to tell us about that we didn’t ask? Metcalf: Sailboat racing has been a huge part of my life and the best part is bonding with my family year after year. It’s become such a great tradition.

Lightning strikes cause Police charge 1 in Darien armed robbery damage in Hinsdale SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – Two separate lighting strikes in Hinsdale kept firefighters busy following a brief but powerful storm Aug 2. The lightning strikes resulted in damage to two properties, according to a news release. No one was reported injured. Shortly before midnight Aug. 2, the Hinsdale Fire Department responded to a report of a possible fire in the 500 block of Walker Street after a house was struck by lighting, according to the release. The first fire unit that arrived confirmed a fire with flames venting from the roof of the home and reported the family was out of the house. Hinsdale firefighters stretched a hose in the house and up the stairs to fight flames from within and directed water from the front yard to the roof line where the flames where mostly visible, according to the release.

The department reported the fire was extinguished within minutes of the Hinsdale Fire Department’s arrival. A thermal imaging camera was used to check within the walls of the home to make sure the fire was completely out. Most of the damage was contained to the roof and portions of the attic, according to the release. The estimated damage was $75,000. While responding to the fire, the department received a second call after lighting struck a home in the 800 block of South Grant Street. It was powerful enough to break off a portion of the chimney, which fell to the ground. A fire engine from the Westmont Fire Department and Chief Pat Kenny of the Western Springs Fire Department responded to the call and determined there was no smoke or fire in the home, according to the release. The estimated damage was about $10,000.

DARIEN – An Aurora man suspected of committing a series of armed robberies in the DuPage County area was arrested and charged July 29 in North Aurora after police observed him robbing a 7-Eleven, according to a Darien Police Department news release. Nathaniel J. Noble, 18, of the 2700 block of Preston Court, Aurora, was charged with aggravated robbery, robbery, armed violence, armed robbery and aggravated assault for the incident in North Aurora. The case against Noble started a week before at 3:33 a.m. July 22 when the Darien Police Department responded to a call

about an armed robbery at the Speedway gas station at 8301 Lemont Road. Police officers conducted a search of the area, but were unable to locate the offender. The clerk was not injured in this incident, according to the news release. Authorities were aware of two similar armed robberies in Naperville and one in Warrenville that occurred within days of the Darien robbery. Police agencies were able to determine a suspect by sharing information, according to the news release. A task force of investigators from Naperville, Darien, Warrenville and the Illinois State Police began overnight surveillance of Noble, accord-

ing to the release. About 2 a.m. July 29, investigators followed Noble to a 7-Eleven in North Aurora where he proceeded to rob the store at gunpoint. He was apprehended outside of the convenience store by a Naperville Police and the surveillance officers, according to the release. The gun that Noble was carrying was a BB gun and the clerk was not injured in the incident, the release stated. Noble was charged with four counts of aggravated armed robbery in connection to the incidents in Darien, Naperville and Warrenville. He was arrested and transported to the Kane County Jail, according to the release.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WOODRIDGE – The Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District recently was bumped up to a Public Protection Class 2 rating by the Insurance Services Office, putting it in the top 2 percent in the nation for its ability to respond to emergencies, according to a district news release. Since 1992, the district had been rated as a Public Protection Class 3 organization with the last rating done in 2005, the release stated. Of the 2,408 fire protection agencies in Illinois, Darien-Woodridge is now among 71 that hold a Class 2 rating, according to the release. Nationwide, there are 917 Class 2 departments out of the 49,000 agencies that the Insurance Services Office rates. There’s only three agencies that

have a Class 1 rating in Illinois, the release stated. The evaluation process examines water supply, training, vehicle and station locations, dispatch, fire prevention, and public education, among other areas, according to the release. Homeowners in parts of Darien, Woodridge and unincorporated DuPage County near Downers Grove have the potential to save on their insurance premiums as a result of the new rating, the release stated. Business and commercial property owners also can expect a significant decrease. The report from the evaluation will be studied to identify and make changes to areas that can be improved, provided those areas are something the district has control over, according to the release.

Manufacturing base continues to decline SPRINGFIELD – When I first began covering Illinois state government, a Mitsubishi sports car could be seen sitting in the governor’s parking spot at the Capitol. The year was 1988 and the governor was James R. Thompson. VIEWS Thompson drove the Scott sports car as a point of state Reeder pride; it was made in Illinois in the then-new auto plant in Normal – a plant that Thompson helped land for Illinois. Well, that mark of state manufacturing prowess is disappearing. Mitsubishi announced last week that it is closing the plant. It is just the latest example of manufacturing jobs disappearing from a state that was once a manufacturing powerhouse. For example, South Holland-based T&B Tube announced this year it will invest $5.6 million to build a new plant in Gary, Ind. Jack Jones, president of T&B Tube, has publicly cited Illinois’ high worker’s compensation rates as a reason for making the move to Indiana. U.S. Steel Corp. also announced this year that it would be halting operations in Granite City, giving pink slips to 2,080 workers. But the company has maintained operations in Michigan, Indiana, Alabama and Pennsylvania. Romeoville-based American Stair Corp. Inc., a manufacturer of steel stairs and railings, also announced this year it will move to a new plant in Hammond, Ind., by the end of the year. This will net about 200 new manufacturing jobs for the border community. But those are just recent announcements. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, over the past 20 years, the Land of Lincoln has lost 35 percent of its factory jobs. That’s 311,000 places on assembly lines that have vanished. Some of those jobs have been lost to international competition and greater automation. But many jobs have simply migrated to other states. “There really isn’t anything that we haven’t talked about over and over,” said Kim Clarke Maisch, president of the Illinois chapter of the National Federation of Independent Businesses. “What I hear from my members is that the cost of worker’s compensation is just way too high in Illinois. Sure, there were some reforms in 2011, but the state is nowhere near where it needs to be to be competitive.” Just consider: The workers compensation insurance premium in Illinois is 12.9 percent of payroll for carmakers. That’s compared to 3.9 percent in Indiana and 3 percent in Michigan.

OUR VIEW

Keep negotiations in governor’s hands Illinois voters elected Bruce Rauner knowing full well his stance on organized labor and with the expectation that he would negotiate with the state’s labor unions. A legislative proposal vetoed by the governor in July and now up for an override vote would take that power out of the governor’s hands and into those of an arbitrator. It would be a mistake. The legislative proposal, S.B. 1229, would provide for a panel of three arbitrators to consider the proposals put forward by the union and the state. They could choose elements of either, but could not modify them to forge a compromise. The legislation is targeted specifically at Rauner, applying only to contracts that expired June 30 of this year. The major union representing state employees in Illinois is the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME. In Illinois, almost 40,000 state workers are represented by AFSCME. Its negotiators are seeking an 11.5 percent pay increase for employees over a new fouryear contract. Rauner said AFSCME’s contract proposal would cost the state $1.6 billion in salary and pension expenses and eliminate $500 million in health care savings. The administration said the union also wants five weeks of vacation time, a 37.5-hour workweek and more expensive health benefits. Rauner, citing the disastrous condition of the state’s finances, wants the workers to agree to a four-year pay freeze.

Scott Reeder is a veteran statehouse reporter and a journalist with Illinois News Network, a project of the Illinois Policy Institute. He can be reached at sreeder@illinoispolicy.org.

Suburban Life Media Editorial Board Laura Burke, Dave Lemery, Matt Hendrickson, Anna Schier, Alex Soulier, Mary Beth Versaci

It’s clear that the threat of a strike is on the mind of Rauner; his team has been working on contingency plans in the event of a strike, which the sides have agreed will not happen between now and the end of September. But why would we want to take the power to negotiate out of the hands of our elected chief executive and turn it over to an arbitrator who is accountable to no one? That’s the kind of backroom dealing that got Illinois where it is in the first place. Rauner, a venture capitalist and multi-millionaire making his first foray into public service, was upfront about his desire to reduce union influence and hold the line on labor costs in Illinois in light of the state’s dire financial situation. Illinois voters elected Rauner overwhelmingly, some of them no doubt in hopes that he would do just that. We want negotiations between the state and its unions to be both transparent and fair. Those making the decisions should be accountable to the taxpayers whose money they are spending. Overriding Rauner’s veto of S.B. 1229 would do the opposite. Our state legislators should let it stand. It is time everyone in Springfield, from lawmakers to state employees, face reality: Illinois is broke, and its people are not willing to pay more until they see serious commitment to changing the broken system that got us here.

A teacher’s job is invaluable, but not all teachers are stellar, because of tenure loss. Teachers get paid for every extra duty – coaching, chaperoning, ticket-taking, supervision. Also teachers get automatic yearly raises, regardless of employment evaluation and get paid extra for every additional class taken. The average teaching salary nationwide may be $50,000, but in Hinsdale it is over double that. It took a while, but the greed of the teachers unions have killed the golden goose, and we the taxpayers are left holding the empty bag while teachers squawking they want more.

GAME REPORT CHICAGO RED STARS VS. FC KANSAS CITY SAT. AUG. 1

HSL

Press Continues Scoring as Chicago Draws 2-2 with FCKC Lisle, Ill. – Saturday evening saw the Red Stars come away with a tie for the second game in a row after facing a fellow NWSL title contender. Christen Press impressed packed stadium by scoring a brace, with both assists coming from fellow World Cup winner Lori Chalupny. However, it wasn’t enough for the Red Stars, who saw their goals rendered null by FCKC’s Amy LePeilbet and Sarah Hagen, whose late equalizer earned a point for the defending champions. Playing in front of their second consecutive sellout crowd at home, the Red Stars took the lead in the 12th minute of the match with a well-timed assist from Lori Chalupny who sent the ball over the defense for Press to run on to. The forward took one touch and got around the keeper to tap the ball into an open net. The visitors from Kansas tied the score in the 35th minute, as veterean Amy LePeilbet headed in Lauren Holiday’s corner kick. FCKC could have turned the match around three minutes from the break, Red Stars defender Abby Erceg’s professional foul keeping Amy Rodriguez from sprinting on to a through ball from midfield. Fortunately for the Chicago center back, referee Matthew Franz cautioned her with a yellow card on the play and Yael Averbuch curled the ensuing free-kick from the edge of the box just over the frame. The fans at Benedictine University in Lisle had to wait until the 64th minute for the next big spike in the action, and Michele Dalton delivered in a big way, coming up with back-toback spectacular saves. First the Chicago goalkeeper palmed Heather O’Reilly’s long-range shot over the frame in an impressive fashion. Then she back pedaled on the subsequent corner kick from the right and leapt up, tipping

FACEBOOK.COM/CHICAGOREDSTARS

the attempt over the crossbar just in time to keep Lauren Holiday from scoring directly. Press gave the Red Stars the lead in the 74th minute. The second goal yet again came from a Chalupny assist- the forward received the ball with her back to goal and looked to have no options, but a quick turn and some precise footwork allowed her to lose her mark and send the ball curling into the upper 90 for the go ahead goal. It was her eighth strike in just six games this season. The spectacular strike visibly lifted Head Coach Rory Dames’ squad, which came agonizingly close to doubling its advantage four minutes later. After rookie Danielle Colaprico blasted a shot off the bar from just outside the area, Alyssa Mautz pounced on the rebound to drive a first-time attempt on frame that forced Rowland to dive to her right and deflect the ball wide by way of an excellent fingertip save. Just as it seemed like the Red Stars might be able to hold on for a massive win over the defending NWSL champions, substitute Sarah Hagen had other plans, beating a defender to the ball in the box to head home O’Reilly’s signature cross from the right flank. The home side could have reclaimed its advantage deep inside stoppage time, but the referee’s whistle remained silent on what looked like a potential handball by FCKC defender Sauerbrunn to block substitute Vanessa DiBernardo’s cross in from the right. The Chicago Red Stars travel to take on mighty Portland Thorns FC on August 9. The club’s next home match is an August 12 clash with Sky Blue FC. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by clicking here or by calling 773-698-6001.

Q&A

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com

Rossi: How are the preparations for the season going so far? Allen: I’d definitely say we’ve been working hard. We’ve been running and lifting more than ever. Rossi: Did you know there would be that much work in this offseason? Allen: I knew it was going to be hard. My freshman year it was hard, and every year it’s been getting harder, but you have to get ready. You have to run a little longer and lift a little longer. As a team, we’re ready for something big this season.

Jack Allen already has put together a noteworthy college football career, and it could get even better this fall. The Michigan State senior was named First-Team All-American by USA Today as well as First-Team AllBig Ten, and he was one of six finalists from across the country nominated for the Rimington Trophy, given to the nation’s best center. All that came in the 2014 season. Heading into the 2015 season, Allen already has piled up some recognition, being named First-Team All-Big Ten and a nominee for the Rimington Trophy as well as for the Outland Trophy (most outstanding interior lineman) and Lombardi Award (most outstanding college lineman). Before the Spartans started preseason practices in preparation for their first game on Sept. 4, Allen spoke with Sports Editor Jason Rossi about his offseason, his role as a leader and what it’s like to play alongside younger brother Brian Allen on the offensive line.

he college football season is about to officially begin as teams soon will be reporting for preseason practices ahead of the

Jack Allen

Area football players shining at college level season kickoff. Several players from area high schools will be hitting the field and making an impact for programs across the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision landscape. Here are a few players to keep an eye on this season. Rob Bain

COLLEGE: Michigan State YEAR: Senior HIGH SCHOOL: Hinsdale Central IMPACT: Allen enters his fourth year as a starter on the Spartans’ offensive line after redshirting in 2011. As a junior, the 6-foot-2, 295-pounder was selected as a first-team All-American by USA Today and also was named one of six finalists for the Rimington Award, given to the nation’s most outstanding center. Allen didn’t allow a sack all season and figures to be a mainstay on the line this season.

COLLEGE: Illinois YEAR: Junior HIGH SCHOOL: Bolingbrook IMPACT: Part of Bolingbrook’s state championship team in 2011, Bain has played a bigger role for the Illini each season after taking a redshirt season in 2012. The 2014 season was Bain’s most productive yet. The defensive lineman played in all 13 games, starting seven, and finished the season with 29 total tackles, including four for loss and one sack. In his first career start against Purdue, he recorded six tackles. He will be looking to build off that production this fall.

COLLEGE: Stanford YEAR: Senior HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard West IMPACT: The 6-foot-4, 297-pound guard heads into his senior campaign this fall as a vital cog on the offensive line. Caspers played in 13 games in 2014, starting 12 of them, and was a Pac-12 All-Academic second-team selection. He also saw action in 14 games as a sophomore and again was a Pac-12 All-Academic second-team pick. Based on his successful 2014, Caspers figures to be a big key to Stanford’s success this fall.

COLLEGE: UConn YEAR: Sophomore HIGH SCHOOL: Downers Grove North IMPACT: Diggs got his feet wet at the collegiate level in 2014, playing in all 12 games for the Huskies as a true freshman. Seeing time as both a linebacker and on special teams, the 6-foot-2, 215-pounder finished with 10 tackles on the season, including a season-high four tackles against SMU on Dec. 6. Diggs could have a major impact on the Huskies’ defense this season.

COLLEGE: Northwestern YEAR: Junior HIGH SCHOOL: Lyons Township IMPACT: Harris started all 12 games last fall at cornerback and finished in a tie for 13th in the Big Ten with nine pass breakups. He was third on the Wildcats in tackles with 70 (58 solos and 12 assists) and notched interceptions against Illinois and Michigan while forcing a pair of fumbles. The junior was an Academic All-Big Ten selection and could be an even bigger force for the Wildcats this fall.

COLLEGE: Northwestern YEAR: Sophomore HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard North IMPACT: The running back burst onto the collegiate scene as a true freshman and earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten accolades in 2014. Jackson became the 16th player in program history to record a 1,000-yard rushing season, finishing with 1,187 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also caught 22 passes for 201 yards and an additional score and is looking to be just as productive this fall.

Dan Vitale

COLLEGE: LSU YEAR: Junior HIGH SCHOOL: Lemont IMPACT: The junior is ticketed to start at center for the Tigers this fall and has been named to the Rimington Award Watch List, which is an award given to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Pocic started all 12 games as a sophomore in 2014, playing both center and right guard. The 6-foot-7, 300-pounder also played in six contests as a freshman.

COLLEGE: Northwestern YEAR: Senior HIGH SCHOOL: Wheaton Warrenville South IMPACT: He enters the final season of what has turned out to be an outstanding college career. After entering the lineup as a true freshman in 2012, Vitale started all 12 games at superback in each of the past two years. As a junior, Vitale was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten pick after being second on Northwestern with 40 catches for 402 yards and two touchdowns and could be a key offensive player this season.

Jordan Walsh

SCHOOL: Iowa YEAR: Senior HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard West IMPACT: A veteran on the offensive line for the Hawkeyes, the Glenbard West graduate is set to begin his senior season. Walsh played in 12 games a year ago with 10 starts at right guard. The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder started all 13 contests as a sophomore and also played in seven games as a freshman after redshirting in 2011.

Jordan Westerkamp

COLLEGE: Nebraska YEAR: Junior HIGH SCHOOL: Montini IMPACT: After catching 20 passes for 283 yards as a redshirt freshman in 2013, Westerkamp saw his numbers more than double last fall. The wide receiver played in all 13 games for the Huskers and was second on the team with 44 receptions for 747 yards and five touchdowns. The junior also is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten pick.

COLLEGE: Illinois YEAR: Senior HIGH SCHOOL: Lemont IMPACT: After starting his collegiate football career at St. Xavier University, an NAIA school in Chicago, Fejedelem walked on at Illinois in the spring of 2013 and took a redshirt season that fall, then broke out with a productive 2014 season. He played in all 13 games and finished the season with 51 total tackles, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery against Ohio State. He could be a major piece in the defensive secondary this season.

SPORTS |

COLLEGE: Memphis YEAR: Junior HIGH SCHOOL: Lyons Township IMPACT: Ranked eighth all-time at Memphis with 192 career points, he also holds the program record for longest field goal after kicking a 56-yarder against South Florida as a freshman.
