JOHN WILSON JR. TRIAL IN SLAYING OF KELLI O’LAUGHLIN
NEWS |
Key moments emerge in trial’s first week in the murder trial.
BRIDGEVIEW – The first five days in the trial of John Wilson Jr. saw a variety of witnesses take the stand as prosecutors began making their case against the man they say murdered 14-year-old Kelli O’Laughlin on Oct. 27, 2011, in her Indian Head Park home.
Opening statements
Assistant State’s Attorney Guy Lisuzzo said Oct. 27, 2011, probably started out like any other day for the murdered girl. “It would not be a normal day for Kelli O’Laughlin,” Lisuzzo said. “It would Trial finally begins be the last day Kelli A jury finally was select- on earth for Kel- O’Laughlin ed Sept. 2 in the trial of John li O’Laughlin. Cover-up claim Defense attorney John Paul Carroll said there is no evidence proving Wilson killed the girl and even suggested the ransacked home was a ruse to cover up a suicide. “Why would someone John L. cover up a sui- Wilson Jr. cide?” Carroll asked. “Some people might be embarrassed. They might think, ‘I want them to think stranger-danger, not suicide.’” Carroll also intimated
that investigators were fixated on Wilson from the start, being a black man accused of a crime in what he described as a white, affluent community.
Chilling text messages John O’Laughlin testified that he called his daughter’s cellphone the day after the murder because he “just wanted to hear her voice.” Soon after, Brenda O’Laughlin began receiving several chilling text messages coming from her daughter’s phone, which had

JOHN WILSON JR. TRIAL IN SLAYING OF KELLI O’LAUGHLIN
Witnesses recall interaction with accused on day of killing to show Wilson was near the O’Laughlin home around the time the Lyons Township High School freshman was stabbed multiple times. Asif Mohammed was working the night Wilson came into the Willow Springs 7-Eleven and asked for the phone number of a cab company. Mohammed testified Wilson bought a can of Ice House beer and paid for it with a dollar bill, some loose change and a gold, one-dollar Sacajawea coin, such as those that were stolen from the O’Laughlin home. Mohammed said he handed a phone book to Wilson, who then made a call on a cellphone. Wilson left the store for about 20 minutes and returned about 7:02 p.m., talking on the cellphone. Mohammed said he explained to Wilson where he was. Wilson left once more and returned about 7:33 p.m. He then purchased another can of beer, went outside where he

BRIDGEVIEW – It’s almost three year’s since Kelli O’Laughlin became a household name – a child with her life ahead of her, a life cut short by a monster wielding a butcher’s knife, all apparently for a bowl of coins and a cellphone. In the last week, many of the 80 possible witnesses have already been called to testify in the trial of John Wilson Jr., the man accused of killing the 14-year-old Indian Head Park girl who allegedly walked in on him as he was burglarizing her home Oct. 27, 2011. “We’ve got some good attorneys on our side. It’s been a long time coming, to get some swift justice for our family and to get some peace.” said Bridgette Douglas, Kelli O’Laughlin’s sister, expressing her confidence in the prosecution team. Much of the trial, which began Sept. 2, so far has focused on the prosecution’s attempt

Pension spiking is when a teacher is given a 6 percent raise each of his or her last four years of teaching, resulting in higher annual pension payments. District 181 superintendent Don White said there are a few ways that districts could go over that 6 percent limit. The first would be to give a teacher a raise in excess of 6 percent, but White said that happens infrequently. The source is often from mistakes either made by the district or a mistake by the teacher. When teachers plan on retiring, they have to submit a Retirement Track, White explained. The Retirement Track means that the teacher plans on retiring in four years. Districts respond to this by initiating the 6 percent salary raise. White said the error occurs after this. If a teacher is supposed to retire in May but they continue working until later that summer, fines are applied on the first extra day he or she works. “Even at $100 over 6 percent, you have to pay a fine,” White said. White said another way that fines could occur would be if an administrator gets a promotion while they are working – such as a assistant principal becoming a principal – and that bumps their salary over the 6 percent threshold. He also said if teachers take an early retirement option, but don’t warn the district in advance, the district would be similarly penalized. Pensions for teachers are based on a percentage of the highest paid years of their career.

HINSDALE – As the District 86 Board of Education and Hinsdale High School Teachers Association remain at odds and the debate over fair teachers salaries stretches into the school year, the board remains adamant that pension-boosting pay hikes for teachers will not be a part of the new deal. Information obtained from the Teachers Retirement System shows that in addition to the cost of paying teachers more for these end-of-career boosts – informally known as “pension spiking” – the incurred penalties previously costed local taxpayers money. Both Hinsdale School Districts, District 86 and District 181, have paid more than $50,000 in penalties to the state since 2008 for giving pension-boosting pay hikes to retiring educators. more than eight years ago, the state set a 6 percent limit on annual raises for that were in the final years of their career. Meaning if a school board wants to pay more, or if errors occur and they pay more, they must reimburse the teachers retirement system for extra pension costs that come from that increased pay. In District 86, $53,754.01 has been paid to the teachers retirement fund since 2008, and the district still owes $10,191.01. Although the fines are small compared to the budget in District 86, high school superintendent Bruce Law said any errors that cost the district are an issue. “We shouldn’t have any errors when it comes to this,” Law said. District 181 paid $70,346.27 in penalties since 2008, while numbers for the 2013-14 school year have yet to be turned over from the Teachers Retirement System.

Every year, the Hinsdale Public Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that every student has the most import school supply of all – a library card. When most people think COMMUNITY of the value of a library card, VOICE they think of the stacks of Karen books they might check out Kleckner Keefe – and, with most hardcovers starting out $25, it doesn’t take a very high stack for that dollar value to add up. If you’re a regular library user, you probably have DVDs, audiobooks and maybe a video game or two in that pile. If you’re a superuser, you know all the other treasures that a library card can unlock for you. You get priority reservations at high-demand programs, free full-text magazine and newspaper articles at the click of a button, e-books and e-audiobooks and free use of the library’s meeting rooms. Speaking of meeting rooms, did you know that the Hinsdale Public Library just launched a digital media lab? We did. It’s equipped with a 27-inch iMac with the full iLife suite (Garage Band, iMovie, etc.) and Final Cut Pro, the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, etc.) and even Manga Studio for budding illustrators. You can use our scanner, digital camera, microphone, midi-keyboard, Wacom drawing tablet or lighting kit to create almost any kind of media you can imagine. And how does this fit in with the stacks of books I was talking about earlier? Libraries are about resource sharing, lifelong learning and literacy. We are about storytelling and creation. Digital literacy is just an evolution of what we’ve always been about. Students and job seekers are now expected to be able to create and distribute content in a variety of formats. We’ve put together a lab where digital natives can expand on what they’re using at school and where adult learners can have a safe, supportive place to try new things. The digital media lab is open to adult Hinsdale Public Library cardholders and minors middle-school-aged and above. (Minors need an Internet and digital media lab permission forms on file at the library.) It’s the national slogan and one that I wholeheartedly believe: “your library card is the smartest card in your wallet.” For information on how to sign up for a library card, visit us in person or at hinsdalelibrary.info.

Mike Solberg rides Sept. 2 through Burlington Park in downtown Hinsdale. Solberg is raising money to support the seminarians at the Evangelical Congregational Church in Angola, Africa.
Thumbs up to Union Church of Hinsdale Senior Pastor Mike Solberg for competing in the Wisconsin Ironman this past Sunday in Madison, Wis. A triathlon that includes a gruelling 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run, Sunday marked the third triathlon that Solberg has participated in. This time, he used the Ironman as a platform to raise money for a theological seminary in the African country of Angola, raising about $18,000 that will go toward the seminarians at Angola’s Evangelical Congregational Church. He hopes to raise $22,000 by the time the money is donated. Congratulations, Mike, we are very humbled by your dedication to the Hinsdale community and your philanthropic spirit. Thumbs up to the village of Burr Ridge for approving the purchase of a dozen Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablets that will be used by the Village Board and department heads. The board goes through about $8,000 worth of paper annually, so the tablets likely will pay for themselves in less than two years. Not only will the move to an electronic format save money and man hours, but it also opens the door for future technological advancements. Almost three years have passed since John Wilson was arrested for the murder of Kelli O’Laughlin. Why? The police had their reports finished the day he was charged. The defense gets all their copies within a month or two, then they investigate. Frivolous motions, month after month. Why does any judge allow this? I guess his right to a speedy trial is only good when the prosecution needs time, and he wants his case dismissed. What a joke.

Police arrest four in holiday crackdown HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Police Department arrested four impaired drivers and issued 43 seat belt citations during the recent Labor Day impaired driving crackdown, according to a Hinsdale Police Department news release. Police joined forces with other state and local law enforcement agencies and highway safety partners in conducting the campaign, which featured “high-visibility enforcement” and more than $1 million in additional police activity, according to the release. Extra emphasis was put on the late-night hours, when statistics show the most people drink and drive and the fewest buckle up, the release stated. Know more HINSDALE – Hinsdale Central boy’s varsity soccer coach Mike Wiggins knows that preventing injuries is one of the keys to a successful season. As a result, he recently had many of his players undergo a screening to determine if they were at risk for one of the most common soccer injuries, anterior cruciate ligament tears, a painful and debilitating injury that can sideline a player for the season and cause additional problems later in life. On Sept. 3, varsity soccer players Jake Semba, Michael Zervogiannis, Evan Floersch, Justin Yi, Jim Walker, Wes Bergevin and Jack Baderman underwent the screenings, which consisted of jogging, lunging, jumping and completing other drills administered by Hinsdale Central athletic trainer Jessica Gruca of Accelerated Physical Therapy. After the drills, Gruca also talked to the players about ways to strengthen their knees to lower their risk of tearing an ACL. Hinsdale Central is one of the first schools in Illinois to respond to the statewide public awareness campaign, Knees for Life, an initiative of the Illinois Athletic Trainers Association in conjunction with Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, according to a news release. “Athletic trainers know that if a high school student is an athlete in almost any sport, there is a high probability of an ACL injury,” Illinois Athletic Trainers Association President-Elect Michael Sullivan said. “They can happen during practices or games most often when athletes use cutting, planting and pivoting moves.” A reaction to the skyrocketing numbers of ACL injuries among youth athletes, the Knees for Life campaign calls for youth athletes to be screened and undergo prevention exercises to avoid ACL injuries, the release stated. OBITUARIES LEE BRIGGS CANFIELD Lee Briggs Canfield, a long time resident of Arlington Heights, died peacefully at the age of 89 on September 2, at his home in La Grange. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, to Lee Canfield and Grace Betts Canfield, and was the youngest of three boys. Mr. Canfield proudly served in World War II, in the European theater. After returning to the states from the war he studied chemical engineering at The Ohio State University. In 1956, after a brief time with Sunbeam Corporation, he followed in the footsteps of his father and found his true calling in a long and storied career as a life insurance agent for Northwestern Mutual. His love for people and their stories helped him earn many significant company and industry honors, including twice being in Northwestern Mutual's “Top Twenty” in annual production. He enjoyed mentoring younger agents, including his son Dennis. Lee was a sailor who named his first boat “Go Bananas” because whenever he was on a boat, he would “go bananas!” He enjoyed bicycling in France into his early eighties, and skiing, cigars, good red wine, opera, and firecrackers. He once famously set off a powerful M80 under the lid of a Weber grill, sending it sky high, terrifying some of his backyard party guests and delighting others. He was quite a crooner, and enjoyed singing “Danny Boy” to anyone who would listen. People always did. A lifelong conservative, Lee and his beloved wife of 42 years, Eloise, who died in 1995, were active in the Goldwater Presidential campaign, many local and congressional elections, and the Reagan Presidential campaigns of 1976, '80 and '84. Lee was also actively involved in youth mentoring programs, and charities including Opportunity International. Even as his health declined, Lee always had a smile on his face and a word of encouragement for everyone. He regularly expressed gratitude to his amazing God for everything from a baby's laugh, to a sunny day or a rainy day, to a particular flower that caught his attention, to any piece of beautiful music. When it came to his five children and twelve grandchildren, Lee thought everything they did was the most amazing thing ever done.

azing ing ev He liked to say, “every one of you is a winner!” In turn, his kids thank God for their amazing dad, his incredible optimism, and how he graciously embraced every moment of life to the fullest. Lee loved to laugh and make others laugh, and he lit up every room he entered. He would often say, “It doesn't cost any extra to have a good time!” He is survived by his brother, Daniel Canfield of Toledo, Ohio; his children, Beverly (David) Hayes, Dwight (Gretchen) Canfield, David Canfield, Dennis (Anne) Canfield, and Betsy (Tom Meade) Hart - all in the Chicago area- and those twelve amazing grandchildren. A service in celebration of Lee's life, and of thankfulness to God for that life, will be held on Saturday, September 13, at noon at the Western Springs Baptist Church, 4475 Wolf Road, Western Springs. A reception will follow. For friends considering a memorial in Lee's honor, the family would be happy for contributions in his name made to the Wounded Warrior Project (WoundedWarriorProject.org), Chicago Hope Academy (ChicagoHopeAcademy.org), or Opportunity International (Opportunity.org).

About Literacy DuPage Literacy DuPage offers free one-on-one tutoring for adults in DuPage County. The tutor training teaches people to read, write, speak and understand English at a more comprehensive level. About 90 percent of the Literacy DuPage program is made up of English-as-a-second-language students while 10 percent is comprised of adult basic literacy students. DuPage strategic plan includes targeting the Westmont and the rest of the southeast quadrant to increase awareness of the organization’s services, recruit additional volunteer tutors and engage local civic, women’s and faithbased organizations, Steiger said. To do so, Steiger has expanded the annual Sept. 8 celebration to a 30-day Literacy Awareness Month, which will be recognized throughout September in DuPage County. “It’s very difficult to get the word out about the need for literacy in this county,” she said. “About 10 percent of DuPage County is in need of our services, and so many people don’t realize that. But when they realize this, people want to … help. So this allows us to host more events on more dates throughout the county.”

WESTMONT – The Westmont Public Library teamed up with Literacy DuPage on Monday to recognize and raise awareness for International Literacy Day. Celebrated annually Sept. 8 in countries around the globe, International Literacy Day aims to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. The theme of International Literacy Day 2014 is literacy and sustainable development, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which first proclaimed the event in 1965. Locally, Literacy DuPage commemorated the event Monday with the help of 17 DuPage County libraries – up from only two county libraries in 2013. Volunteers and the organization’s staff worked the tables in the morning and afternoon, encouraging patrons to learn more about the cause, volunteer or make a donation. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Literacy DuPage Executive Director Bernie Steiger staffed the table at the Westmont Public Library. She explained the area will be the focus of the group’s strategic plan that includes targeting area residents to increase awareness of offered services, recruit additional volunteer tutors and engage local civic, women’s and faith-based organizations. “The southeastern quadrant of DuPage County, and Westmont in particular, is a major focus for us during this next year as we see rapidly increasing need in that area,” Steiger said. “We see a tremendously increasing need for literacy services in this area, and we want to make the community aware that we are here to help.” About 20 percent of the DuPage County residents are born outside of the United States, and nearly 10 percent of residents have limited English proficiency skills, according to Steiger. As a result, the Literacy

Midwestern University expands community health fair By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Visitors to Midwestern University’s annual health fair next month can get a variety of free screenings and a flu shot, but organizers hope this year’s expanded offerings also will provide an interactive experience and yield a well-rounded understanding of healthy choices. The student-led, free health fair Oct. 4 is ramping up this
year and will be in the Downers Grove Park District’s Recreational Center for the first time to accommodate the longer list of booths and activities. Guests who visit each booth can win prizes, event coordinator and second-year pharmacy student Jan Kum said, and the event will include a children’s area with activities and games. “We’re creating a family friendly event,” she said. “We have one entire section of the
Park District gym dedicated to children’s health. “This year, it’s activity-oriented – it’s not going to be just a passive look-and-see. We’re not just going have a poster board and have students stand around and explain something. It’s going to have an interactive component.” The Downers Grove police and fire departments are also participating, as well as the public library. Guests 18 and older can get a free flu shot on a first-come,
first-served basis, and screenings include hearing, BMI, glucose level and others. Participants with unhealthy results will receive information and guidance for follow-ups. “A screening is your first line of defense,” Kum said. “There are a lot of people who don’t have insurance, and this is a great way to stop by and get your basic screenings done for free.” For the more than 240 students like Kum who volunteer at the fair, it’s an opportunity to showcase the skills and knowledge they’ve learned in the classroom. “It’s a great way to experience what it’s like once we get out to our real jobs,” she said. Students providing information and screening to the public at the event are supervised during the day by school staff like Dr. Jennifer D’Souza, who started the fair 10 years ago when she was a Midwestern University pharmacy student. “It’s definitely expanded,

The patio beckons at Emilio’s Tapas in Hillside, known for the art of the small plate repast and the famed Spanish specialty, paella.
Good things come on small plates at Emilio’s HILLSIDE – Whether it’s a romantic date for two or a meal with friends and family, it’s all about sharing when it comes to dining on tapas, the “small plates” that originated in Spain and went on to deliciously infiltrate other cuisines. It’s a pure pleasure to go back to one of the region’s original purveyors: Emilio’s Tapas in Hillside. We dropped by late on a Saturday afternoon before the restaurant filled, and opted for a table on the flower-ringed patio, where retractable awnings are available to counter any unwanted sun or rain. Lightly falling water from a lion’s-head fountain helped set the mood, with soft Spanish music providing a subliminal dance beat. The indoor seating, which includes a bar, is an attractively escapist setting of rustic walls adorned with intricate tile patterns and murals of Spanish scenes. While we perused a menu traditionally divided between offerings of cold (fria) and hot (caliente) tapas, and varieties of the famous specialty paella – a saffron-infused rice typically featuring seafood – our helpful server brought a complimentary plate of a Spanish ham spread on crusty bread garnished with baby lettuces. She filled us in on the day’s specials and made welcome recommendations as we pro-
A superb dish is the grilled black Angus with sauteed oyster and mush- A decadent treat are the bacon-wrapped dates in a red pepper butter rooms, Spanish potatoes and cilantro cava sauce – Turnedos de Cebon. sauce – Datiles con Tocino. gressed through the leisurely meal. It was apparent from the nearby conversations between servers and guests that a lot of happy regulars were on hand. We couldn’t resist ordering our go-to tapa: bacon-wrapped dates in a red pepper butter sauce. The dish was exceptional, featuring dates that were unusually plump, sweet and velvety. Add the applewood smoked bacon and the delicate red pepper sauce counterpoint, and it’s a standout. We used the bread basket offerings to sop up every last drop. Another tradition my companion couldn’t resist is the garlic potato salad, not for the faint of heart when it comes to the generous chopped cloves. With a short tower of clean plates at the ready, we tried something new to us: grilled black Angus with sauteed
oyster and shiitake mushrooms, Spanish potatoes and cilantro cava sauce. The beef was tender, flavorful and cooked medium rare exactly to order. It paired well with a Spanish version of home fries and the zesty sauce made with cava, Spain’s answer to Champagne. We capped the meal with a delectable cold tapa of roasted eggplant, pear tomato and green onion, accented with piquant goat cheese and grilled shrimp with a balsamic vinaigrette. The mild eggplant dominated the dish, and provided a fresh veggie spread for toast points. Service throughout our meal was wonderful, with water glasses kept full and plates whisked away in anticipation of the next arrival. To keep in mind for a future visit, flamenco performances are featured peri-
odically, and the restaurant offers a gluten-free menu. We hadn’t left enough room to try any of the desserts, which range from Callebaut bittersweet chocolate terrine with raspberry sauce to Flan de Caramelo to a cheese plate with local honeycomb, Spanish quince, figs and Spanish Marcona almonds. However, we did indulge in a superb cappuccino, rich in creamy flavor and froth, that was prepared, our server told us, from organic, free trade beans. It was a perfect ending to a relaxed, savory meal.

Robby Regan, Marcus Curry and the offense have executed well through two games, but it was the defense that impressed in a shutout win against Downers Grove North. The Warriors are searching for their first win, but the record is deceiving. They showed a marked improvement in Week 2, when Billy Degnan passed more than 50 times in a 25-21 loss against Lyons Township.

Hinsdale South moves to 2-0 with win By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DARIEN – Robby Regan admitted he didn’t have the best first half against Downers Grove North. But the fact that the first 24 minutes weren’t so hot for Hinsdale South’s senior quarterback was balanced out by the fact the Hornets defeated the Trojans 6-0 on Sept. 5 to improve to 2-0 on the season. “My reads were kind of cloudy,” Regan said of his first half. “They showed some safety blitzes and showed some guys in positions we weren’t really expecting.” Regan made the right read

zone,” Regan said. The defense came up big again late in the second half as Robert Hall picked off a pass as North was driving for a potential tying or go-ahead score. The Hornets didn’t allow Downers Grove North (1-1) to reach the red zone until late in the third quarter, and even though South suffered its share of penalties, it was able to capitalize on the two Trojan miscues. “It was back and forth, and in football a lot of times in close games it comes down to turnovers and penalties,” South head coach Mike Barry said. “We had the penalties and they had the turnovers,
but it worked out on our behalf. The turnovers changed field position in a major way, and they turned the momentum as well.” Last season, Hinsdale South lost the West Suburban Conference crossover game against Downers Grove North to fall to 0-2 on the season. It’s a much better feeling to be sitting at 2-0 this season, although Regan, Barry and the Hornets aren’t getting too far ahead of themselves at this point. “For us, it sounds cliche, but we do want to take it one game at a time,” Barry said. “That’s our focus. Every week
we do a lot of preparation and focus on a specific team but obviously with the goal in mind of the playoffs and a conference championship. You can’t play the game without an end result in mind. It is a challenge sometimes to stay focused on the task at hand, but our leadership does a real good job with that.” “Last year, I think we could have started off at least 1-1; this is exactly how we planned this year,” Regan said. “Obviously the goal is to go 9-0 and then playoffs, but we have to take it one game at a time, so right now we’re on to the next one – Willowbrook.”

had started the season by defeating state powerhouse Bolingbrook, were among the shocked. After going ahead 10-0 in the opening quarter on a 9-yard touchdown run by Juwan Edmond and a 23-yard field goal by Blake Hately, the Red Devils couldn’t muster anything more. “Shutting them out for three quarters, pretty impressive,” Addison Trail coach Paul Parpet said.
saw his first action of the season against AT and could see more work this week as quarterback Matt Rafferty was hobbled in the fourth quarter against the Blazers. The game is the first West Suburban Silver contest for both head coaches as Central’s Dan Hartman and York’s Matt Monken are new to the league. The Dukes have won their two games a combined 98-7. Rafferty completed 5-of12 passes for 57 yards before leaving the game in the final quarter because of an injured ankle. But by then, the Blazers had already taken charge. “I think it’s an eye-opener,” Hartman said. “Take a team lightly or you get up on a team and think that you’ve got the game under control, I think that’s the lesson learned right there.”
HINSDALE – It didn’t take long for Dan Hartman to make an impact for Hinsdale Central’s football team. Following a 23-15 win against Bolingbrook in the first game of the season Aug. 29, Central’s firstyear head coach Dan Hartman was named Chicago Bears Coach of the Week, Hinsdale Township High School District 86 announced Tuesday. “Winning the award is a great honor,” Hartman said in a release from District 86. “It really is a reflection of how hard the boys and staff have worked this summer in preparing for this year. The boys have a lot of potential, but we have to stay grounded and take it one week at a time. If the boys can bring the same focus and intensity as they did in the Bolingbrook game, it will be fun season.” Throughout the 2014 high school regular season, the Bears organization will honor one player and one coach each week. As part of the award, the Bears will make a $1,500 contribution to the football program at Hinsdale Central. All honorees are invited to be formally recognized Dec. 21 at Soldier Field when the Bears host the Detroit Lions.
Downers Grove South captures thrilling win against Proviso West By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com
Week 3 matchup
DOWNERS GROVE – Trailing by seven points with less than a minute to play is not the ideal situation for most football teams. For Downers Grove South, it was the stage on which a memorable comeback took place. A touchdown with two seconds left in regulation forced overtime, and the Mustangs won 28-27 against Proviso West in a West Suburban Conference crossover game Friday night. “We found a way to get it done,” South head coach Mark Molinari said.

AT topped Hinsdale Central 1810 on Friday. viso West scored and botched the extra point attempt. Molinari, however, said the defense played a huge role in the win. Robert Justus had a 35-
yard interception return for a touchdown to tie the score at 7, and the defense came up with key plays when the Mustangs needed them most. “We played pretty well offensively a majority of the game,” Molinari said. “But I think the defense is going to lead us until we can get some things figured out on offense. We’ve just got to rally together.” Breaking into the win column in dramatic fashion in the home opener was a cause for celebration, but Molinari made sure the emotion of the moment also involved an eye toward the rest of the season. “We were very honest with
them,” Molinari said. “We told them we need to find ways to get better because if we continue to play the way we’ve been playing so far, it’s going to be hard for us to reach the goals we set at the beginning of the season.” Things won’t get any easier as South (1-1) starts West Suburban Gold play by welcoming an Addison Trail team with two solid wins under its belt. “We’re viewing this as a conference championship game,” Molinari said. “AT is playing well, and they have a good quarterback, a very good running back and very good receivers.”

ADDISON – After helping Addison Trail knock off Hinsdale Central 18-10 on Friday night with two fumble recoveries and an interception, senior linebacker Eric Gilliam was just as quick verbally. “We’re aggressive. We get out there, we punch people in the mouth,” Gilliam said. “And we fly to the ball.” And he won’t get any arguments from Hinsdale Central coach Dan Hartman, who watched his team surrender a 10-0 lead in the West Suburban Conference crossover game, lose starting quarterback Matt Rafferty to an ankle injury and turn the ball over four times. “They’re a bunch of hardnosed kids and they played hard,” Hartman said of Addison Trail. “They definitely deserved the win.” Addison Trail running back Malik Pierre-Louis rushed for a game-high 140 yards, including a 1-yard plunge for a score in the fourth quarter following Gilliam’s interception. Jaavion Bradley jumped up between Hinsdale Central defenders for a 30-yard touchdown catch with three seconds left in the first half. Quarterback Mike Rybarczyk ran for a score and threw for 57 yards. For the Blazers (2-0), who will play at Downers Grove South tonight, it was the

Hinsdale Central aims for more success, seniors lead South By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com Boys soccer teams in the area have already taken the pitch this season, and plenty of them have good reason to have high expectations. Here’s the outlook for Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South and other area teams.

Konrad Bayer, Richard Michalik and Daniel Morefield are back with the varsity. “All are returning players and all played big minutes last year,” Benet head coach Sean Wesley said. “We are dangerous in transition with lots of pace and we are able to score goals.” Benet also has the ability to stop goals from being scored with Bayer in net, though three of the four defenders in front of him are new. “We may be young but we expect to ... win conference and make a run towards the state title at the end of the year,” Wesley said.

are any indication, the Mustangs are primed to improve on last year’s results. In their first three games they had surrendered just one goal and blanked both Fremd and Hinsdale Central as they jumped out to a 2-0-1 record. “At this point in the season, I have been happy with the way we have defended,” head coach Jon Stapleton said. “I also feel we have demonstrated a lot of depth at several positions. It seems every night someone new has made a big contribution, which will only make our team stronger as the season goes along.” In Eric Diaz, South possesses a player who was an Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association all-sectional player last year and is a force at both ends of the field. Diaz provides plenty of scoring punch, but as the season goes on Stapleton will be looking for more players to figure into the attack. “We spent a lot of our preseason on defending so as a result we are probably a little behind in being creative in the final third of the field,” the coach said. “As the season continues I expect we will take positive strides in that area.”

Outlook: Eight seniors, in- field North and Morton. One of cluding standout forward Christian Meyer, have graduated from a team that rolled through the regular season, but on the other side of the coin seven starters return to the fold for the Red Devils. Among the returning players are 2013 Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association all-state keeper Wes Bergevin. Should Bergevin need a rest during the season, junior Ethan Gama is a more-than-capable backup. In front of the keepers is a deep and gritty group of defenders that includes Evan Floersch, Daniel Lillard, Will McGowan and Nick Silva. At the top of the attack, Sam Johnson and Jake Semba will lead the way. So far, this season has developed quite differently than the 2013 campaign as the Red Devils have already lost twice,
the biggest games of the season comes when Central hosts Lyons Township on Sept. 27. By then, the team hopes to be in peak form. “I am excited,” Central head coach Mike Wiggins said. “This team ... has shown great chemistry both on and off the field.”

Outlook: After enduring their share of struggles last season, the Hornets come back with a small team laden with senior leadership. Seniors Lucas Carlson, Daniel Jaworski, Danny Perez, Alec Raatz and Austin West all played with the varsity last season, as did juniors Mykolas Meilus and Michael Noble. The results went against South in the first five games of the season, though three defeats were one-goal losses; only one of the losses was a lopsided defeat. In the first game of the year against Wheaton Warrenville South, Noble scored on a header on a ball served by freshman Karel Ondra. Zachary Duffy, Joseph Dunleavy, Paul Figus and Christopher Metcalf should also see their fair share of playing time this fall.

MORE BEARS COVERAGE AT CHICAGOFOOTBALL.COM
CHICAGO FOOTBALL.COM Hub Arkush bounce back and give us an exciting season, the future for the Bears is not all that bright. According to a study by Philly.com, the Bears are the third oldest team in the NFL today, and their starting defense is definitely the oldest. The future of any NFL team is based on how it drafts and scouts college talent. The reason these Bears are so old is a number of years of bad drafting by Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith. Now I’m sure you’re all thinking no news flash there, but it is time to start wondering if Emery and Trestman have that trend turned. It is now time to officially declare Emery’s first draft as the Bears general manager as disappointing to poor. Yes, Alshon Jeffery is a great addition to this team and possibly even a building
Don’t miss seeing ‘Chicago Football Now’ Watch Hub Arkush and the rest of our coverage team break down this weekend’s Bears game on “Chicago Football Now” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on WCIU The U or at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on The U Too. block for the future. Unfortunately, that’s it. Shea McClellin continues to receive chances and to disappoint. He and Isaiah Frey on the practice squad are all that remain from that group. Even if McClellin becomes a serviceable starter, that’s just not enough from an entire draft class. The Bears have Kyle Long, Jon Bostic, Khaseem Greene, Jordan Mills, Cornelius Washington, Marquess Wilson and Demontre Hurst to show for Emery’s sophomore class. It is at least 16 weeks too early to grade this group
or form any final conclusions about the long-term prospects of any of these prospects other than to say Kyle Long looks like another potential building block for the future. But is it fair to ask what your expectations are for any or all of Long’s classmates? A few more serviceable to better-than-average NFL players? If that is in fact how it turns out, once again Emery and company just have to do better. There are 10 drafted rookies or undrafted rookie free agents on this year’s final 53, the same number as the Bears kept last year. That is a nice number, but the question we need to ask is, is that because the talent is so exciting, or the talent they had to beat out to make the team was uninspiring? What we can say for sure is if this year’s crop of Bears rookies don’t prove to be better than the first two groups Emery compiled, the franchise is in some serious jeopardy.
IT’S ALL ABOUT DRIVE
$
2 , 500 00 00
What is interesting is Emery has proven to have a very good eye for veteran talent. And he seems to work veteran free agency very well. But by itself, that is a one-way ticket to average. Counting on veteran free agents to contend will almost always lead to salary cap issues, a lack of depth up and down your roster and perhaps some number of very good players but a certain lack of star power. There is enough talent on this 2014 Bears roster for this team to be a playoff contender, even after the embarrassing loss to Buffalo. But that’s only if this group can stay healthy and get itself focused on stopping the run. But if this 2014 rookie class doesn’t turn out to be the best the Bears have had since 2003, the last good draft this club had, and the next couple of drafts aren’t better than that, Bears fans had best start preparing for a very long dry spell before their club is ready to contend again.

ROOM FOR THE WHOLE TEAM
HSL
Did the Chicago Bears run into a better team in their opening day disappointment versus the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field, or was it just another step in the “process” that GM Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman reference so often? I suspect it was the latter, which isn’t necessarily good news, but minimally tells us we’re just going to have to hang on for a few more weeks before we really know what we’ve got in these Chicago Bears. If in fact the Bears just aren’t as good as the Buffalo Bills, then Emery and Trestman have a big problem on their hands. The Bills aren’t a bad team, but at best they are one of a number of average or mediocre teams in the NFL that are going nowhere fast. That then could mean that the Monsters of the Midway are just a bad football team. Like I said, I’m not ready to write off this year’s Bears, and I really don’t think you should either. But even if these guys

ill there soon be a new baby in your house? The thought of a new brother or sister can be scary, but it can also be very exciting.Make the baby feel welcome. What would you want if you were moving to a new place? You can help welcome your baby brother or sister by drawing pictures or helping your parents pick out clothes and toys. Ask how you can help You probably know that babies cry a lot, but they can also be fun. As a big brother or sister, you can show a baby new things, sing them to sleep, maybe even help feed them. Make sure you ask your parents before trying — babies are very delicate, and it’s important to be gentle with them. You can help out around the house, too, by taking care of pets, helping make meals or cleaning up after dinner. Put away your toys when you’re finished playing, and keep your bedroom clean — this will be extra important when the baby is bigger and moving around.
Make a family tree! Start with your name at the bottom, and fill in the names of your parents, grandparents and greatgrandparents. Your parents can help you with names you don’t know. Maybe you can make one for your new baby brother or sister, too!
Do something just for you! It’s important to help around the house, but it’s also important to do something that makes you feel good, something just for you. What do you like to do? Maybe you can spend extra time reading, coloring or playing outside. Everybody will need a break every once in awhile, and that includes you.
Spend time with your big brothers and sisters Do you have any older siblings? Now that there’s more than one big kid in the family, you can do some special things with your other brothers and sisters that the baby can’t do. Someday, the baby will be old enough to include, too. If you don’t have any other siblings, maybe some of your friends do. Find out what they like to do together and think of all the things you’ll be able to do with your brother or sister someday.
