Family and friends of Kelly O’Laughlin, including Jessica Wittenberg, of Indian Head Park, comfort one another Monday after a guilty verdict was announced for John Wilson Jr. for O’Laughlin’s murder at the courthouse in Bridgeview.

processed after his arrest Nov. 3, 2011 in Chicago. “He knew that Cricket phone could link him to the western suburbs,” Turano said. Turano recalled how at the 7-Eleven in Willow Springs Wilson was smiling at people, laughing and buying beer with the Sacajawea gold dollar coins he stole from the O’Laughlin home in Indian Head Park, as well as other coins he used to pay a $20 cab fair to the CTA station at Midway Airport. “He continued to try and erase what he had done,” Turano said. “He wanted to make sure no one was tracking him.” Turano reminded the jury of how both Wilson’s phone and the girl’s phone, which was stolen after her murder, were tracked together using cell tower locations.

Meanwhile, the most damning evidence against him was found in the house. “But the one thing he forgot was the red hat,” she said, referring to the prosecutions only source of DNA linking Wilson to the crime, a knit cap that was filled with a rock and used to break into the O’Laughlin home. “That hat was his calling card.” Defense Attorney John Paul Carroll began his closing arguments with a more lyrical approach. “Shakespeare once said, ‘All sound and fury signify nothing,’” Carroll recited. He then railed against the prosecution’s evidence against his client, and made an impassioned plea to the jury to not view Wilson as a defendant but as a man.

a statement during a press conference in the lobby of the courthouse and asked for privacy for the family and thanked the state and police for their help, as well as the family and friends that stood by them. However, when asked if she felt justice had been served, Brenda O’Laughlin said it was unlikely. “Justice will never be served because Kelli will never be coming home,” she said. The verdict followed closing arguments by prosecutor Andreana Turano, who opened by looking at the jury and said “Come here and get my Cricket phone, it has everywhere where I’ve been. Those were the words of Wilson as he made a call to a friend while he was in the La Grange police station being

BRIDGEVIEW – John Wilson Jr., the man accused of the 2011 killing of 14-year-old Kelli O’Laughlin, was found guilty of first-degree murder Monday in Judge John Joseph Hynes’ Fifth District Court room in Bridgeview. A jury of five men and seven women went into delibera- John L. tion at 4:40 p.m. Wilson Jr. and returned to the docket at 7 p.m. with four guilty verdicts. Brenda and John O’Laughlin, parents of t h e g i r l w h o Kelli w a s a f r e s h - O’Laughlin man at Lyons Township High School when she was killed, sat quietly as the verdicts were read among a crowd of friends and family, many silently crying, that have been surrounding them throughout the 10-day trial. Wilson sat impassively during the verdict and showed little to no reaction during the trial. Prosecutors told the jury Wilson was burglarizing O’Laughlin’s Indian Head Park home when she returned home from school and surprised him in the act. She was stabbed eight times with a knife from the family’s kitchen and left to bleed on the floor of her home. Her mother found her after returning home from work, and Kelli was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. The O’Laughlin’s read

Carroll also revisited a recurring theme in his defense. “In our society, we believe a human being deserves dignity,” he said. “Mr. Wilson has not been treated with dignity because he’s a black man.” Carroll added there were three assumptions that have “galloped” through the prosecution’s case: That one person committed the crime, that the offender didn’t have a vehicle and that the offender was a black man. “Some people want Mr. Wilson to be guilty,” Carroll said. “He’s black. He’s homeless. He’s odd; an easy target.” Prosecutor Guy Lisuzzo launched into his rebuttal argument saying the trial was definitely about Wilson the man and his DNA being in the home. In the end, the jury found Wilson guilty on all charges against him – first degree murder, armed robbery, residential burglary and home invasion. The case, now closed, caused an outpouring of grief and bewilderment from the community in the days after the girl’s murder. Community members from around the area tied ribbons around trees in their front yards, placed plastic cups in fences at her high school spelling her name and hundreds lined up for a wake and funeral procession through the streets of La Grange to the family’s church. In addition to a scholarship memorial created by the O’Laughlin family in her honor, community members and her peers at school have held numerous benefit concerts and events in the years since in Kelli’s honor. She certainly won’t be forgotten.

HINSDALE – Community Consolidated School District 181 has posted information on its website related to the April 2015 election to provide resources for individuals interested in running for an open seat on the District’s Board of Education. The new webpage includes a variety of important web links and documents from the Illinois Association of

School Boards, the Illinois State Board of Elections and the Cook and DuPage County clerk’s offices. District 181 Superintendent Dr. Don White explained in a news release that recent legislation has resulted in considerable changes to school election procedures. “We recommend that individuals interested in running for a board position begin to review the many resources made available to them to en-

sure they are prepared for a successful candidacy and that they follow the proper steps,” White said. The first such step outlined in the Illinois Association of School Board’s election calendar is Sept. 23, the first day prospective candidates may circulate nominating petitions for signatures. Dec. 15, the second highlighted date, is the first day candidates may file nominating papers with the county

clerk or county board of election commissioners. Four seats on the District 181 seven-member board will be filled at the April 7, 2015 election, as Brendan Heneghan, Michael Nelson, Marty Turek and Glenn Yaeger will have completed their four-year terms. D-86 board calls for a vote on contract offer HINSDALE – Hinsdale Township High School District 86 school board members are requesting the Hinsdale High School Teachers Association present the board’s latest contract offer to the teachers and then allow them to vote. In the wake of the teachers union filing an intent to strike Sept. 9 with the Illinois Education Labor Relations Board, District 86 board members Richard Skoda and Ed Corcoran hosted a press conference Tuesday to air their grievances and detail the district’s latest contract offer to the teachers union. “The board condemns the latest developments, which threatens the uninterrupted education of our children and causes great angst in the community,” Skoda said. “The board also feels it demonstrates bargaining in bad faith,

Like previous district offers, the proposal on the table eliminates “pension spiking,” or 6 percent raises in each of a teacher’s final four years prior to retiring. “This is a very, very fair contract,” Skoda said. “Everybody is getting a raise. The average will be a 2.8 percent raise. Nobody is taking a pay cut.”

The board and the district have been negotiating a new contract for nearly a year, and the teachers have been working without a contract since June 30. While mediation has taken place behind closed doors, both sides have recently publicized details of contract offers. “The public posting process is one of several processes that precede a lawful strike,” teachers union negotiator Jeff Waterman said in a written statement. “The public process will require the board to submit a complete proposal, something we’ve been requesting for months.” But after the union filed an intent to strike, the board and the union were obligated to submit their proposals to the Illinois Educational Labor Re-

The teachers union said it would not strike before Hinsdale Central’s homecoming on Oct. 11, and Skoda believes that a job action may take place as soon as Oct. 14. However, Skoda could not speculate how many teachers may, in fact, go on strike. District 86 is comprised of Hinsdale South and Hinsdale Central high schools and includes students from Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Darien, Oak Brook, Westmont, Clarendon Hills.

By Audrey G. Freeman, Au.D. – Dr. of Audiology When many people think of a hearing aid, they think of the ones from years ago like your grandmother may have worn. It was big and bulky with wires and cords. She may have likely complained of how terrible it sounded and turned it off often. Luckily, like all fields of electronics, hearing aids have come a long way. Many are much smaller, lighter, and more comfortable.

My patients and I are able to receive a signal wirelessly from cell phones and music MP3 devices. There is also a wireless transmitter for the television. My husband, who is co-owner of our business and also a hearing aid user, enjoys the television streamer. He not only can hear the television as if he was wearing a headset connected to it, but he can also hear others talk in the room. If I’m not interested in what he is watching, I am able to turn the television sound way down; and he can still hear it. This has been a benefit for both of us.

It can send the sound directly to my hearing aid, so I can hear my music or videos without taking out my hearing aid to put in ear buds or disturbing others with the sound.

About six years ago when I lost the hearing in my right ear, hearing aid styles had begun to change. I wear a small, lightweight device that helps me hear the high frequency sounds I miss in conversations. Since that time, not only have they improved how the hearing aid performs in restaurants and crowds; but they have also added a water and dust resistant coating. My favorite advancement is the way my

hearing device connects to wireless devices (no cords needed). The wireless accessories can now connect to all different sizes and shapes of hearing aids.

York Township helps to supply thousands of meals for needy residents York Township operates an extensive senior nutrition program in conjunction with DuPage Senior Citizens Council, a nonprofit agency. Last year, we served 44,717 meals, including our congregate dining center and home-delivered meals, frozen meals and cold sack lunches, otherwise known as Meals on Wheels. The meals are delivered by volunteers to COMMUNITY homebound seniors throughVOICE out York Township who John W. enjoy nutritious meals they Valle might not otherwise receive without our program. It is important to mention this program would not be possible without the assistance of about 16 volunteers per day. That would include a dozen drivers carrying Meals on Wheels, three people working the steam table and one or two kitchen helpers. Many volunteers are involved, some working only one or two days per week. If anyone is interested in being a part of this worthy group, you would be most welcome. Every year, the senior citizen council honors volunteers of the year in several categories, recognizing exceptional individuals who have given their time and talent to the council and the elderly. This year’s Volunteer of the Year for the council’s York Township site is Nancy Bartucci. Here is what site managers Bunny Clark and Sue Randall said about Bartucci at the awards ceremony. “Nancy has been a volunteer since 2005. Nancy currently delivers four to five days per week, each day taking two to three routes. For many months, she was delivering five days, week after week. She is always available and willing to substitute when we have volunteer cancellations. Nancy is very open in communicating with the site managers and is able to give us valuable information because of the strong relationships she has formed with the seniors. Nancy has been an invaluable asset to the DSCC York Township volunteer team.” At our regular board meeting Aug. 13, the York Township Board of Trustees unanimously passed a resolution as follows: “We honor Nancy Bartucci for her years of dedication and service to the DSCC York Township Senior Nutrition Program and we express our gratitude to her, for supporting DSCC and York Township with her time and talent, and our appreciation for her ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life of senior citizens in York Township. And, we extend our best wishes for her continued good health, good fortune, happiness and the love of her family, friends and all those whose lives she has touched.”

John W. Valle is supervisor of York Township.

Thumbs up to the Hinsdale Central boys soccer team for participating Sept. 3 in Knees for Life, an initiative that was hosted at the school by the Illinois Athletic Trainers Association in conjunction with Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush. During the event, which seeks to limit ACL tears, players underwent knee screenings, then completed exercises intended to prevent lower body injuries. Hinsdale Central is the first school in the area to partake in Knees for Life, and we applaud the athletic department’s commitment to addressing and quelling what has become an increasing problem among athletes. Thumbs up to Hinsdale South for earning a Do What’s Right! sportsmanship banner for the spring 2014 girls’ soccer state finals appearance. The IHSA awards sportsmanship banners to schools that display a high level of sportsmanship at state final team events. While winning and losing is often construed as the endall, be-all in sports, learning the classy way to win and lose truly defines a team’s character. Election talk Property tax payers living in Carol Stream have a choice for DuPage County Clerk this November. First there is Paul Hinds, who is a career politician, government worker and has served for years under County Clerk Gary King, who steps down this year. Hinds oversees the calculation of

property taxes. Voting for Hinds is just like voting for King. He’s been a loyal political supporter of King for years. The other choice on the ballot for County Clerk is a 10-year government watchdog and first-time candidate, Jean Kaczmarek. As a citizen, Kaczmarek has had a positive impact on DuPage County. She objects to the clerk’s salary – by far the highest in the state for this position – for the least amount of responsibility. Check them both out. Choose well this November.

Vote no for indoor pool at Ackerman Sports Complex When you go to vote please say no to a new indoor pool in Glen Ellyn. Some of us have tightened our belts in this economy. We expect those we vote in to do the same. The entire Ackerman Sports Complex cost $11.5 million with all it offers. Is it wise to build a pool whose purpose is so narrow with a cost of $13 million, and who knows how much more than that? ... When you go to vote, please say no. Thanks.

Here’s an accident waiting to happen! At the La Grange Post Office, on the public sidewalk on the Ashland Avenue side of the building, there’s a metal pipe protruding from the concrete approximately 3 1/2 inches high. Recently, someone painted it brightly. It helps, but with snow to come, someone is going to trip and fall on this hazard. A senior citizen fall there could be catastrophic.

Sound Off is Letters to the Editor minus names How can you have a Sound Off section, which I would call a Letters to the Editor section, without printing the names of the people who make the comments? What are you afraid of? I am from a part of the country where we have a very vibrant local newspaper and the Letters to the Editor section is extremely vibrant. People even buy the paper just to read the Letters to the Editor. ... You’re doing an injustice. Is this the American way – to express an opinion and not print your name? What are you afraid of? ... Come on, get some guts and print the commenters names.

In response to the question asking how hair stylists should be tipped: It depends on the cost of the service. I charge $70 for a woman’s haircut; if I repeatedly received a measly $5 tip, I would absolutely not continue giving them exceptional service (like fitting them into a tight schedule during the holidays). Hair stylists should be tipped according to their prices, it should be at least 18 to 20 percent gratuity for good service. The stylist’s prices are generally based on skill level and their education. Just remember when you tip well, your stylist will bend over backwards for you.

Although she didn’t take first place, Szumny said she is extremely proud of her performance. She added that getting to know her contestants was more rewarding than any sash or a tiara. “There was just so much love an support for each other on that stage,” she said. “After spending the weekend surrounded by and getting to know these girls, at the end you are surrounded by a bunch of people that are your new best friends.” However, this is not the end of Szumny’s time in the spotlight. The Darien resident will soon debut in the Polish TV show “Miasto Marzen,” which was filed this past summer in Chicago. The series follows the lives of Polish immigrants in Chicago, and Szumny plays a 15-year-old named Sarah who is pursuing a career as a model. For Szumny, who plans to minor in Polish in college and has visited the country several times to see extended family, the TV series was an amazing way to pay tribute to her polish heritage. “It is such a beautiful country,” she said. “After visiting three times, It feels like my second home.”

Dillard talks funding, future for Metra, RTA at DuPage meeting By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Facing a future filled with expensive capital replacements, Regional Transportation Authority Chairman Kirk Dillard said Tuesday that Metra will get money this year to upgrade some of its equipment. The former state senator attended the DuPage County Board’s Ad Hoc Committee on Mass Transit meeting to discuss the authority’s 2015 budget. Dillard said its nearly $1.5 billion in proposed expenses represents a 9.2 percent increase in operations funding compared to 2014 because of sales tax growth, the state Public Transportation Fund and the Real Estate Transfer Tax. “Metra is going to get these funds for the first time,” he said.

Regional Transportation Authority Chairman Kirk Dillard (left) meets with DuPage County’s Ad Hoc Committee on Mass Transit on Tuesday to discuss the authority’s future. Projected revenue is about $1.6 billion. Generally, discretionary funds the authority receives go to the Chicago Transit Authority and Pace Suburban Bus, with the former getting

the majority. This year, however, rail service will get $730,000 in sales tax discretionary dollars. That number is expected to increase to $3.8 million in 2016 and $5 million in 2017. Metra also will receive $6 million in 2015 from the authority fund balance in the proposed budget compared to $2 million for its capital program last year. Dillard estimated the three transportation agencies would require about $30 billion in upgrades and work to bring their services to good repair, about $10 billion of which would go to Metra. With its aging car systems and limited funds, it is important for local officials to push for state and federal dollars, Dillard said. He offered Dallas as an example of a city that invested in its transportation infrastructure to make it more attractive for businesses and younger generations. Taking public transportation instead of a driving can save the average consumer $6,000 to $9,000 a year, Dillard said. But the services must be dependable for people to use them. “If you want to have a world-class region, you have to have good mass transit,” he said. “For the new generation, it’s inbred in their way of life, and to compete against Boston and California and Dallas, you need it.”

He said the budget was the first in a decade-long revamp of the authority’s agencies based on a new sense of cooperation between their leaders. “It’s vital that all three service boards work together,” he said. “We’re all one service system ... we’re all one economic region.” Although his goal is to unite suburban and city agencies to create a shared ride experience, he said residents in his former district should “sleep well” knowing he was fighting for fairness. “When I’m delayed on the Metra, I’m fuming just like they are,” he said. Committee head and county board member Tonia Khouri said she was glad Dillard was leading the authority and appreciated the long-term planning. “One of the main functions of my committee was to fight for discretionary funding for DuPage County and the collar counties, so we were happy to see that Metra was to receive 39 percent of discretionary funding this year,” she said. “It’s ongoing, we’ll take what we can get, but [DuPage County Board Chairman Dan] Cronin and I and many, many other people have been fighting for that, so it’s been nice seeing it happen.” The authority Board of Directors is expected to vote on the budget in December.

To the Editor: While Ruth Lake Country Club attempts to attract new members by proposing a new skeet shooting range, it may, in fact, be having the opposite effect by alienating hundreds of people in surrounding residences. Issues of serious concern include: • Noise: With proposed shooting to occur from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holiday from Nov. 1st to March 31 will club members enjoy lunch accompanied by gunshots? What about social functions like weddings? • Pollution of land, air and water from lead shot and poisonous clay skeet: These toxins endanger wildlife, including federally protected birds, as well as fish and plants in Ruth Lake, which then flows southward to Flagg Creek. • Potential danger to motorists on surrounding roadways startled by sudden gunshots • Lower property values of homes within earshot: We have

(BPT) - There still is time to complete your unfinished outdoor projects. Sixty percent of homeowners will accomplish a home improvement project this year, according to survey data from the Zillow Digs Summer Home Improvement Trend and Spending Survey. Follow these tips to make your home’s exterior shine. * Smooth over concrete surfaces. In order to prevent trips or falls, now is a good time to fix and patch those cracks in the driveway or garage. Be sure to fix them now before they get larger and you could incur larger repair costs. It will also help prevent any future accidents. Small cracks can be fixed with concrete caulk while large cracks require a patch. Make sure to clean out the crack before applying either of these substances. * Repaint the deck. Improving your deck, patio or porch is the seventh most popular home improvement project according to RE/MAX and it’s easy to see why. When you picture yourself outside, you probably picture yourself sitting on the deck. So, make your deck stand out with a fresh coat of paint. “Decorating outside of your home is now all the rage,” says Matthew Mead, author of Backyard Style. “Your deck needn’t be brown and sullen. Infuse your backyard space by selecting whatever color you want and spray the floor of your deck with the Wagner Flexio 890. Your deck will be the toast of the neighborhood.” * Give your old patio furniture a new look. If you’re going to reinvent your deck, why stop there? Why not refresh your patio furniture to complement your deck’s new color, too? “Revive any outdoor furniture with an easy spray using the Wagner Flexio 890,” says Mead. “With a simple coat of paint you can transform tables, chairs, and anything wicker in any hue or shade you desire. In my new book Backyard Style, I show how to take simple flea-market finds and, with some paint and very little effort, transform them into show-stopping decorative accessories.” * Caulk around windows and any exterior joints, including doors. Many people think of this as a preventative project for winter, but a fresh application of caulk will protect cool air conditioning from escaping when you need it most. * Make your home’s exterior sparkle. If your home suffered any damage during the winter, now is the perfect time for repairs that will make your home look great again. Walk around your home and look for damaged or missing siding. Replace these pieces and then use a pressure washer to clean and wash away excess dirt and grime. Using a special detergent appropriate for cleaning your home will give you better results. Once you’re done with the siding, don’t forget to grab the window cleaner and make those windows sparkle. Each of these projects can return between 67 and 112 percent of their value to your home, according to DiGiorgi Roofing and Siding, not to mention the added joy you’ll receive from these home improvements. So get out there and get to work. The sooner you finish your project, the sooner you’ll be able to enjoy the rest of the year in style.

Continued from page 17 admits to residents that they disagree with the request. Since I wrote to the mayor and trustees with a different perspective, I know this representation is misleading. Further, during the trustee’s discussion, several statements were made that simply are not factual. For example, a trustee stated that lead shot and the targets would be an environmental threat. Since other types of nonlead shot and biodegradable targets have long been available, that assertion is simply wrong. Another trustee remarked there are no other such facilities in any urban setting. Again, another false statement. Yet another one

remarked (as I understood the trustee’s intent) that no noise should be permitted from this operation, despite many other routine permitted uses that generate substantial noise. Since an only-winter operation is requested, any noise concern is reduced as cold weather causes many people to limit outdoor activities and retreat indoors behind closed windows and doors. In closing, I don’t know if the skeet range is a reasonable use for the land or not. Nearby residents need to be heard and this request should be carefully considered, but I don’t think one-sided letters or otherwise trying to squelch free speech should be allowed to influence the outcome. Restaurant reviews

The Bank Restaurant capitalizes on fresh fare WHEATON – When dining at a fine restaurant, the thoughtful pairing of wine and entree may be a given, but patrons at The Bank Restaurant in Wheaton reap added dividends with delicious fare sourced in a socially responsible manner. Housed in an 1875 building that was once the original location of Gary-Wheaton Bank, the aptly named restaurant offers American-style food with a decidedly local slant – prepared with meats and produce from the region’s farms and ranches. Although outdoor seating is available, my dinner companions and I sat in the main dining room, an intimate setting with tin-tiled ceiling, muted lighting and dark wood trim. Live flamenco guitar softly played in the background; musical acts are a fixture on Friday and Saturday evenings. Our waitress, friendly and attentive, brought us a loaf of crusty bread served with a chipotle-honey butter that was creamy and savory. My dining companions typically stay away from shellfish, but couldn’t resist sharing the Mussel Zuppa appetizer consisting of fresh Cape Cod mussels stewed with sliced celery, carrots, bamboo shoots and snow peas in a house marinara sauce, served with lemon wedges and grilled croutons. The winning dish drew the duo, figuratively speaking, out of their shells. The mussels were tender, and the marinara sauce was thick, rich and had a slight kick to it. I ordered the Hawaiian-style Arctic char, noted in the menu as a sustainable best choice in the salmon family, with mashed Hawaiian purple sweet potatoes. The fish had a sesame soy glaze, and was topped with thinly sliced cucumber, red bell pepper and onion. It was not only visually appealing, but a delicious blend of flavors and textures with each bite. One of my companions is

Edmond, defense add up to Central win By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – When Hinsdale Central needed big plays, Juwan Edmond provided them Friday night. The Red Devils’ running back went off for 282 yards on 17 carries and had three touchdowns in Central’s 41-21 victory against visiting York. “I got to give props to my offensive line,” Edmond said. “They opened up some holes

today. Coach Hartman was on them all week about opening up holes. We started off the week real slow, and he basically called them out in front of the entire team, talking about how we couldn’t move the ball.” York (2-1, 0-1 West Suburban Silver) took the lead on the first play from scrimmage on an 80yard run from Morgan Alexander. Edmond’s first touchdown, a 21-yard run with 7:26 left in the second quarter, gave the Red Devils (2-1, 1-0 WSS) their

first lead of the game at 10-7. When the Dukes regained a 14-13 lead on a 12-yard pass from Bobby Dunn to Kyle Coughlin on their first drive of the third quarter, Edmond again had the answer. Back-to-back runs of 48 and 22 yards resulted in his second touchdown and turned the momentum back to Central. “That’s what I was most proud of these guys, being able to come back after the first play and after they took the lead again in the second

half early,” Central coach Dan Hartman said. “They did a nice job responding, and it showed we’re getting there mentally.” Central’s next drive resulted in a 45-yard touchdown by Edmond. His next carry after was a 63-yard run to set up a 1-yard score by sophomore quarterback Josh Bean. Bean started at quarterback with Matt Rafferty out with an ankle injury. Edmond missed the season opener at Bolingbrook and started to find his rhythm in the

second half against the Dukes. He had 193 yards on seven carries in the second half alone. “We were struggling in the first half,” Edmond said. “In the second half the holes were opening up more and I was able to get more yards.” Frank Saltiel added a picksix in the fourth quarter for the Red Devils. Jimmy Thompson and Alex Byrnes also had interceptions, and the Central defense forced four turnovers in the game.

Panos, Zach Hayes, Calum Kelly, JP Sporleder, Lynden McCarroll, David Laughter and Carter Lyons and linebackers Steven Schnur, Tommy Skokna, Joey Antonietti, Jack Levine and Elliot Harris on that side of the ball. The Falcons’ offense got off to a quick start as they drove down the field for a touchdown on their opening possession. Runs by Antonietti, Sean Allison and Billy O’Malley set up

Allison’s scoring run. David Laughter passed to Tommy Skokna for a successful twopoint conversion. Later in the first quarter, O’Malley scampered more than 50 yards for a touchdown, and Antonietti ran in the extra point conversion for a 15-0 lead. The advantage stood until halftime. In the second half, big defensive plays from Panos, Mikey Hinchman, Mason

Shaker and Vinny Galassi kept Lemont scoreless. A combined sack by Schnur and Lyons gave the Falcons the ball again, and Laughter connected with McCarroll to get to the 1-yard line before Schnur rushed for touchdown No. 3. To put an exclamation point on the performance, the defense forced a fumble to end the game. The Falcons also pitched a

shutout in their first game of the season, defeating Bartlett 19-0. Antonietti scored the first touchdown of the game, then intercepted a Bartlett pass to set up O’Malley’s long touchdown run. Hayes, Sporleder and Panos provided the pass protection that allowed Laughter to complete a 15-yard touchdown pass to O’Malley for the final score of the game.

to 20-7. South’s offense racked up 377 yards for the game, including 262 on the ground. Regan gained 128 yards rushing and Curry finished with 111, but the defense might have had the more impressive game. In addition to Hall’s interception, the Hornets picked off three other Warrior passes and came up with two fumble recoveries. For much of the game, Willowbrook’s high-octane ofBill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com fense was stuck in first gear as it managed just 195 yards for Hinsdale South players and coaches celebrate a turnover during a Sept. 5 game against Downers Grove the game. VILLA PARK – Football coaches often say it takes all three phases – offense, defense and special teams – to win a game. Hinsdale South made two of three work just fine. A dominant offensive effort plus a defensive touchdown helped the Hornets in their 40-20 victory against host Willowbrook on Sept. 12. The Hornets, who improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the West Suburban Gold with the victory, closed out the game strong with three unanswered touchdowns after the Warriors tied the game at 20-20. Robert Hall notched the decisive score with a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter. Robby Regan then had a 9-yard touchdown run before he connected with Ravon Johnson on a 15-yard touchdown pass for an insurance score later in the fourth quarter. Hinsdale South got off to a fast start offensively with Marcus Curry breaking off an 80-yard touchdown run before Robby Regan punched it in from 1 yard out later in the first quarter. Nick Kotsiantos booted in both extra point kicks for a 14-0 lead at the end of the first frame. After the Warriors made it a 14-7 game, Johnson hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Regan to extend the lead

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com With the girls cross country season underway, athletes across the state have started on a path that they hope leads to the state meet. Downers Grove South, Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South all have state meet aspirations.

ninth. Thate placed 34th overall. The Peoria Woodruff Invitational on Saturday was the first big meet of the year, and the Mustangs showed well there. Thate was in the top 50, and some of the newcomers also fared well. Sophomore Katie Stapleton finished in 65th place, junior Maggie Seitz was 90th and freshman Kelley Hackbarth was in 108th place. Senior Mary Beine, junior Liz Alcantara and freshman Natalie Olsen also ran well. “Our younger runners are definitely ahead of where I thought we would be, so that’s awesome,” head coach Doug Plunkett said. “We have a great group of younger runners who could very well move up into the varsity ranks before the season is over.

ger this season. “Summer training has gone extremely well,” head coach Mark McCabe said. “It always does, but this year the commitment and consistency was as good as we’ve ever had.” Haff was first (16:41.1) and Zaher third (17:04.1) at the Peoria Woodruff Invite on Saturday, with newcomer Reilly Revord (fourth, 17:18.7) also in the top 10 as Central won in a loaded field. Outlook: The Hornets were set to build around senior and returning state qualifier Sarah Leganski, but a mono diagnosis has her out of the lineup. Another 2013 state qualifier, Victoria Salazar, also is back with the team, but without Leganski, who could return for the postseason, the team is moving ahead with a young and inexperienced group. So far this season, newcomer Elizabeth Lowery has been South’s lead runner. She finished with an eighth-place time of 20:39.1 at Saturday’s Reavis Invite. Another new face, Rebecca Lowery, placed 11th and Sydney Locke, who is out for cross country for the first time, was 16th. Improvement on a meet-by-meet basis is a primary goal. “The girls have been working hard and are shooting for the top the Gold,” head coach Gail Huster said. “We would also like to return to the state meet with a larger number of qualifiers.”

Perez is rounding into form as he recovers from a training injury. Saturday’s Richard Spring Invite on the state course at Detweiller Park in Peoria will be a telling one for the Hornets. “We are running very well right now,” head coach Jim Dickerson said. “I am very eager to see how we run this Saturday.” The Hornets moved on to the sectional as a team last year but couldn’t advance past the sectional. The main goal this season is a team berth at the state meet.

percent who’ve experimented with drugs. When it comes to these types of issues, we tend to have very short memories. Watching the NFL’s various pregame shows this past Sunday, I was struck by who the commentators among the former players were. What do Michael Irvin, Warren Sapp, Cris Carter, Keyshawn Johnson and Ray Lewis, to name just a few, all have in common? A lot worse than sex, drugs and rock and roll, and they are the networks’ choices to be the faces of the game. Everything is going to be just fine, but some things are definitely going to have to change. For starters, Rice’s

were paid so they’re not technically being punished. Even if they’re innocent of the allegations against them, they have to know better than to put themselves in these situations to maintain the privilege of playing in the NFL. The paid time off until their cases are adjudicated is what’s best for the league. Finally, understand that the case against Peterson is very different than Rice, Hardy and McDonald. I find what Peterson did to his son to be disgusting and reprehensible and I’m sure many of you agree with me. But there are some very serious, important and significant institutions and individuals in this country who believe in corporal punishment. Again, as much as I hate what Peterson did, it is quite possible he loves his son very much and that he believed he was doing the right thing. How Peterson responds and what the league does to clean up this ridiculous mess is what we will eventually remember, not how uncomfortable it’s been to watch it unfold.

Let’s be clear, not only will the NFL survive, it will continue to be the most popular sport in America and a goldmine for those who own it, coach it and play it. There are 1,696 players on NFL rosters right now, another 320 on practice squads and about 200 more on various injured reserve and other lists. Rice, Hardy, McDonald and Peterson represent exactly two-tenths of 1 percent of that group. The 39 players who began the season on suspension for failed tests for banned substances or violations of the league’s personal conduct code represent 1.8 percent of the players in the league. I can’t prove it, but I’m betting if you took 2,216 random citizens from anywhere in the country you’d find more than twotenths of 1 percent who’d committed serious crimes, and a lot more than 1.8

former teammates have to stop making things worse. Immediately following the Ravens’ 26-6 Thursday night victory, Ravens Torrey Smith, C.J. Mosley, Jacoby Jones and others talked about winning it for Rice and what a great guy he is. That Rice had allegedly never been in any trouble before is irrelevant. His one indiscretion is inexcusable. We didn’t need the second tape to know that, and until his former teammates understand that, they will continue to embarrass themselves and the league. We have no idea what Roger Goodell knew or when he knew it relevant to the second tape. If he’s lying, he will be fired. If he’s not, he’ll be judged on what he does to eliminate domestic violence among NFL players going forward, not how badly he’s botched the Rice case. Hardy, McDonald and Peterson all are clearly entitled to due process in the courts. But that does not mean they’re entitled to play through their indiscretions. The deactivations of Hardy and Peterson this past weekend were the right moves. Both players

1977 was my first year on the NFL beat. In the 37 years since, I have never seen a more controversial or disastrous week for the game than the one that’s just passed. There was the week the players walked out in 1982 and didn’t return for 56 days. 1987 brought the replacement games and disgust in NFL cities everywhere. We lived through the Raiders-Patriots “tuck” game, replacement officials, and the game they stole from the Packers to give to the Seahawks. There were murder charges against Rae Carruth and Aaron Hernandez and any number of other huge stories that challenged the NFL’s seeming perfection and invincibility. But never a week like this. With the emergence of what is being called the “second Ray Rice tape,” the sudden vulnerability of the previously untouchable Roger Goodell, the ongoing controversies surrounding Greg Hardy and Ray McDonald, and then the child endangerment indictment against Adrian Peterson, it feels as if the sky is indeed falling.
