Hinsdale South’s French teacher Courtney Mikulcik credits her French teacher at Lemont High School for inspiring her to become a French teacher.

DARIEN – Courtney Mikulcik is all things French at Hinsdale South High School. In her seventh year at Hinsdale South, she is the school’s only French teacher, instructing everything from the basic class to Advanced Placement French 4. Mikulcik is the sponsor of the Hinsdale South French Club and National French Honor Society, works with students on the National French Exam and celebrates National French Week. She also is working on creating a foreign language outreach program for local middle school students, with some of her French students serving as ambassadors. “I think it is very important for people to embrace other cultures and to have those connections,” Mikulcik said. “For me, French is the way that I’ve been able to do that and explore the Francophone culture in Canada, as well as

liquid radiation treatment and a bone marrow transplant. Doctors estimate the treatment process will take between 16 months and two years, and give the child a 50 percent chance to live, according to Fortuna. “This has been a whirlwind,” Fortuna said. “We cried the entire day we found out, and then then entire day after. But now we are not crying anymore, we are fighting. No one fights alone, and we will fight until this is all over. “Doctors give him a 50 percent chance, and that’s all we need. All we need is 1 percent for my nephew to survive.” Boy Scout Troop 56 has also joined the fight. Recently, Zachary Fortuna – who shaved

his head in solidarity with his cousin – approached his mother, explaining that he and his fellow scouts wanted to hold a fundraiser to help the family with their medical bills. With the help of the parents and the scout leaders, troop 56 will host a car wash from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 5 at Gower West School, 7650 Clarendon Hills Road in Willowbrook. All donations will go directly to the Ellis family to help pay for medical expenses. “It’s a heartwarming gesture,” Michelle Fortuna said. “There are no words to express how wonderful this troop is. To see them rally around one of their own is truly incredible.

BURR RIDGE – Boy Scout Troop 56 believes in supporting each other – their “second family” – in an way possible. So when the Burr Ridge Troop learned that a fellow Scout’s 4-year-old cousin was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, they jumped into action, setting up a car wash fundraiser Oct. 5 in WIllowbrook to help the family pay for medical bills. “This is what we do, this is what being a boy Scout is all about,” Scoutmaster David J. Biedrzycki said. “We always strive to help those who are in need. Everyone here – in troop 56 – is like a family. So if one one of our family members needs help, we will do everything in our power to help them.” Willowbrook resident Michelle Fortuna’s son, Zachary, is a Boy Scout in troop 56. About two months ago, Fortuna’s nephew, 4-year-old Chris Ellis of La Grange, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma stage four cancer, a form of cancer that begins in the sympathetic nervous system and typically affects children under the age of 5. Until the diagnosis, there were no signs that Chris was sick, according to Fortuna. “My sister and I always go on vacation with the kids when school gets out,” Fortuna said. “Three days before we left, Chris got a fight with his sister, who inadvertently kicked him in the eye and gave him a black eye.” The black eye healed, but when they returned from their trip, Chris started seeing double, alerting the family to take him to the hospital. District 86 could lose $1.76 million in annual state funding SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – A state senate bill that would overhaul the way Illinois funds education by distributing money to school districts based on financial need would cost Hinsdale Township High School District 86 nearly $1.8 million annually, according to the district. If Senate Bill 16 is passed by the Illinois House of Repre-

sentatives this fall, the district would lose $1.76 million in state funding, district officials said at Monday’s board of education meeting. The bill was passed May 27 by the state Senate. District 86 receives state funds based on local wealth and on the characteristics of its student population. Since district 86 is considered “property wealthy,” the portion of received state funds is based on

local wealth is relatively low, coming in at $218 a student and totaling about $980,000 in yearly state revenue, District 86 Superintendent Bruce Law said. However, under Senate Bill 16, 95 percent of all state funds would first be funneled through the filter of “local wealth” in determining state funding levels, and that consideration includes special education funds, transportation funds and the poverty

As a result, school districts that are deemed wealthy will not be reimbursed by the state for most special education and transportation costs. “Consequently, the District will essentially lose all state funds tied to these programs,” Law said in a written statement. The district’s state funding would drop from its current $2.539 million per year to $773,000 annually, a difference of $1.76 million, according to the district. Similarly, Community Consolidated School District 181 will lose $1.647 million is annual state funding. Under SB16, all but one school district in DuPage County will lose state funding, a total of $140 million, Law said. SB16 does not increase the level of education funding,

but changes the way in which state funding is distributed among school districts. SB16 is modeled after an effort in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts general assembly provided $1 billion in new money, according to District 99. There is no new money in SB16. House Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, described the bill as redistribution and not reform. “I am vehemently opposed to this bill,” Sandack said. “It unquestionably hurts all the public school districts in House District 81. Moreover, I think with maybe one exception, it hurts every suburban school throughout DuPage County. “We are being seen as a source of funding for other parts of the state.”

Treating Cancer: Integrative Oncology with Illinois Cancer Specialists

Cancer can be thought of as a weed in the body. It flourishes with the right environment. Modern physicians have tools such as chemotherapy to kill the weed The real trick to beating cancer and staying cancer free is to create a healthy body environment. Integrative Oncology uses medical treatments along with alternative treatments that have scientific evidence of effectiveness. It focuses not only on the weed, but also on the soil the weed grows in – the whole body, mind, and spirit. It empowers the patient to take an active role. We know that diet can make a difference. Obesity is known to increase the risk of certain cancers. A healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and fish with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids can all have beneficial anti-inflammatory effects. Mind-body approaches, including physical therapy or exercise, yoga, meditation and massage can decrease stress. Distress may not directly lead to the development of cancer,

but it can depress the immune system and affect how one’s body can tolerate certain treatments. Various approaches can help alleviate treatment-related side effects. Ginger eases nausea, and an increased protein intake can combat fatigue and muscle loss. Acupuncture can help with cancer related pain, nausea, and hot flashes. Mind-body interventions combat mood disturbances and insomnia. These approaches, along with your oncologist’s prescribed medications can improve quality of life. Always ask a medical professional before starting any supplements or lifestyle modifications to avoid interaction with other cancer treatments. Integrative medicine reminds us that our bodies have an innate ability to fight disease. Integrative oncology is not just about complementary and alternative treatments or a healthy lifestyle. It is about effectively communicating with and treating the whole person; not just the cancer. For more information on Integrative Oncology, contact Dr. Lakhani at Illinois Cancer Specialists.

Indian Chinese cuisine goes back over 100 years when people of Chinese origin moved to India across the North East Border and settled in Calcutta. Most of these immigrants were of Hakka ancestry. Over the years they adapted the Chinese cuisine for the locale Indian seasoning and cooking techniques. This is how Indian Chinese fusion began.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – After more than 25 years of business in the Hinsdale community, local men’s clothing retailer Hinsdale Clothiers, Ltd., soon will shut its doors for good. Before doing so, the store, located at 777 N. York Road in Gateway Square, will hold an inventory sale Oct. 2. Owner Steve Potter made the announcement Wednesday via a news release. Potter, who has spent 45 years in the men’s clothing business, underwent heart surgery in April and then suffered three strokes, according to the release. While he wanted to work another five years to reach the 50-year milestone, Potter realized it’s time to retire, close the store he purchased with a business partner in 1989 and sell his entire inventory in the weeks ahead, the release stated. The store’s inventory sale will begin at 9 a.m Oct. 2. Potter’s career started at

Henry C. Lytton’s on Chicago’s State Street after graduating from Ferris State University in Michigan. He transferred to New York City after three years, returned to Chicago and then honed his custom-clothing skills at Gaede’s, a Wheaton men’s and women’s clothier. He purchased Hinsdale Clothiers in 1989, according to the release. He said he enjoyed the three big elements of running a successful men’s clothing store -working with clients, standing out from mass-marketing competitors and leading employees. “You have to like working with people and I do,” Potter said in a statement. “When you work with someone and they see the improvement in their wardrobe, they’re more comfortable and confident. It changes their lives and that’s very rewarding. While Potter is closing Hinsdale Clothiers, he hopes to find a new, part-time retail niche in the future, according to the release.

I wonder if anybody knows anything about how they determine this.

On June 6, 2013, Judge Joseph Hynes warned John Wilson to stop delaying his trial. That was after 22 continuances since his arrest. September 2014 we finally have a guilty verdict in this case. What took 22 continuances plus another year and three months of continuances, took only two hours to convict this killer. I think the Chief Judge of Cook county should have his judges run their courtrooms, and not let the defendants set the pace. … For the parents to endure this for three years is just sad.

I would say that all told the court system and jury did the right thing by finding John Wilson guilty on all four counts, but the aftermath will be anything but justice. Kelli’s young life was violently snuffed out at an early age and her family and friends have been devastated and will live with the memory of this heinous murder for the rest of their lives. Wilson, however will be able to continue his life knowing that because our governor has eliminated the death penalty … he will live out the rest of his life comfortably. ... If Wilson gets life without parole, he will be housed, fed, clothed, and receive free medical, dental and optical, all on the taxpayers’ dime. It’s time to get the death penalty back in Illinois so real justice can be done in cases like this one.

Tracy Frizzell of Hinsdale is a co-founder of Economic Awareness Council. The nonprofit helps teach children and young adults how to save and spend money in a fiscally responsible way.

Hinsdale woman’s nonprofit helps youth with personal finance By ZACHARY WHITE editorial@mysuburbanlife.com HINSDALE – Saving for retirement and spending less money than you earn seem to be prudent, if not obvious, steps to take when handling personal finances. But Tracy Frizzell, executive director of the Economic Awareness Council, said financial foresight doesn’t come easy for everyone. That’s why the Hinsdale resident and some of her colleagues founded the Economic Awareness Council in 2003 – to teach children and young adults how to save and spend their money in a fiscally responsible way. Frizzell works with a variety of students – from young children to young adults heading to college – with the goal of educating those young learners to understand they, too, can be financially successful and save money. “Our real focus, and kind of growth, is on serving low-income families and low-income youth,” she said. However, Frizzell said one of the problems many of the children she works with face is a lack of knowledge regarding what is out there as a resource for them. When she asks her students – many of whom have recently received their first paycheck – what they plan to do with their money, they are eager to go cash it.

About Best Under 40 A select number of Suburban Life staff chose 15 outstanding young professionals who are younger than 40 in Chicago’s western suburbs and who make significant contributions to their profession, company and community for an inaugural event that took place Thursday. “The neighborhoods in which we work, there are many more check cashing establishments than there are banks,” Frizzell said. Using funds allocated by the city of Chicago, she once polled her students to try and find out what they thought about saving and what saving meant to them. “About half of them thought that there weren’t any banks that would want to work with them,” Frizzell said. “They thought that it was something for somebody that was older and had more resources.” She tries to teach her students they need to save, that saving for college or emergencies is important.

Knuepfer, a 34-year-old Trading, recently joined the board of the Wellness House, a cancer support group, in order to give back to the community he grew up in and to the people who are in need of help. He said helping those in need isn’t just something he likes to do, it’s something he has to do. “You have to,” he said. “If you’re so blessed and privileged, its a responsibility.” When dealing with cancer, he said everyone needs a little help because everyone is affected. “I think one out of two men will get cancer in their life, one out of three women,” Knuepfer said. “Cancer is something that affects everybody.” The Hinsdale based Wellness House is neither a hospital nor a clinic, rather a welcoming home filled with people and programs to help people suffering diagnosed with cancer. With support groups, classes, social events and much more, the nonprofit was built to give back the strength, community and control that cancer can take away, according to the Wellness House website. adno=S0238186

(BPT) - When it comes to caring for your yard, maintenance is crucial especially during the fall when it needs to recover from the wear and tear of summer and prepare for winter’s harsh conditions. Knowing what your lawn and garden needs from season to season not only makes it easier for you to stay organized with your list of backyard to-do’s, but it also allows you to identify and treat any problems before they become bigger issues down the road. Get your lawn and garden back in shape and ready for the coming season by completing these fall backyard projects.

1.

Patch and seed - Extreme summer weather conditions like heat, excess rainfall and drought can lead to diseased or dead patches of grass throughout your yard. If you notice an affected area while inspecting your lawn, treat the problem area immediately and then reseed it. This will nourish grass, plus help it establish strong roots needed for growth in the spring.

Selected Display’s on Sale

2.

Plant bulbs - Give your spring garden a head start by planting bulbs 5 to 8 inches deep, depending on the size, with the pointy end up. You can also plant bulbs in clusters. However, since bulbs can be hard to tell apart, be sure to keep the labels intact until they are planted.

3.

Remove leaves and small debris - Leaves, small twigs and light dirt can quickly accumulate in your yard during the fall and if not removed, can cause soil compaction and make your yard look messy. For a quick cleanup solution, use a leaf blower to easily move debris from your lawn,

driveway or patio. Opt for a blower like Troy-Bilt’s new Jet leaf blower that achieves a perfect balance of speed and volume with its mixed-flow fan design, helping you clear your yard efficiently and effectively. Jet also has an optimal weight balance, so the blower is stable and easy to control. When removing leaves, make sure they are dry and wind is at a bare minimum to ensure an easy removal process.

4.

Compost - Fall isn’t too late to start a compost pile as it takes six months to one year to develop into rich soil you can use in your garden. Keep in mind, compost decomposition slows down during the cooler months, which is why it is important to retain heat needed for decomposition by refraining from turning your compost pile.

5.

Prune - Pruning is considered the best preventive maintenance for your trees and shrubs, particularly in the fall and late dormant season. Look to prune diseased or dying branches, but be sure not to remove unreasonably large branches. This leaves exposed stubs that can potentially cause health problems.

6.

Weed - Though a year-round yard task, it’s extremely important to pull as many weeds as possible in the fall. As cooler temperatures set in, weeds start to store food in their roots for the winter. Prevent weed regrowth by pulling or digging weeds out of the ground with a weeding blade or use a homemade weed control solution, such as a combination of vinegar, water and dish soap. For more lawn and garden tips, backyard project ideas and information about the Jet leaf blower, visit troybilt.com.

Frizzell could have ever imagined. The Economic Awareness Council worked with 50 students when it was first founded, but now the agency serves more than 20,000 annually. “It kind of has been a fast but steady progress,” she said. “For a long time, it was just myself and volunteers. “There hasn’t been one year where a lot of growth happened at once, there has just been a lot of growth each year for many, many years.” She said she owes the growth and success to the donations and support she received. The Economic Awareness Council’s mission is to prepare students and families for the economic and financial decisions they will make today and tomorrow.

Knuepfer explained the programs put on at the Wellness House, such as cooking and yoga and aerobics classes, don’t aim to just help people who are directly fighting cancer, they help everyone. “But there’s also these other issues that you’re dealing with,” Knuepfer said “Your kids, or your parents or your spouse. The Wellness House offers all these programs to help assist with all the other things that happen in life, other than the cancer.” Along with the healthy body and healthy eating classes, the Wellness House offers support groups, one-on-one counseling and educational programs.

“All the finances come from outside [donations].” The oldest of four children growing up in Hinsdale, Knuepfer said the only thing more important to him than giving back and helping others is being around his family. He and his wife both have family living in Hinsdale, so it was easy for him to come back to the neighborhood when he decided to settle down with his own children. He currently has two children with a third on the way. Knuepfer said being home with his family is one of the most important things to him. “I try to get home by 6 [p.m.], have dinner with the kids, put them to bed and just lay low,” he said “A pretty quiet lifestyle.”

The best part of earning your bachelor’s degree at National University is that you’ll be taught by many of the same faculty who teach in the professional degree programs, and you’ll use the graduate-level facilities of one of the world’s top universities specializing in natural medicine. NUHS boasts an outstanding library of 13,000+ volumes devoted to health science, a cadaver-based gross anatomy laboratory, as well as an on-campus student clinic where you can

take advantage of free health services. NUHS’ beautiful 35-acre Lombard campus is conveniently located in suburban Chicago, and offers on-campus housing, financial aid counseling, a student fitness center, and several student social and professional networking organizations. Want to learn more? Visit www.nuhs. edu to apply online, schedule a visit, or view the entire line-up of course descriptions and start envisioning how NUHS can help prepare you for your future goals.

HSL

t National University of Health Sciences, if you’ve finished your general education requirements, you can earn a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science in as little as 16 months. Not only that, NUHS gives you the freedom to tailor your own degree program by letting you create a course list that matches your unique goals. Whether you plan to use your science education for a career in business, health care, or as a prelude to graduate school, you can construct a specific program to give you the best preparation. According to Dr. Randy Swenson, dean of NUHS’ College of Allied Health Sciences, “You can choose from any combination of courses in our BS program to complete your bachelor’s degree. There are no required core courses, just a requirement that you earn 64 credits. So no matter which of our many courses you pick to meet those credits, you’re on track.” That means that if you are interested in medical administration or hospital work, you can choose courses in Medical Spanish, Medical Terminology and Computer Software. Planning a career in sports and fitness, how about adding courses in Sports and Performance Nutrition, Kinesiology, or Exercise Physiology? If you are looking for a place in research or laboratory work, you might choose courses in Research Methods and Statistics, or Epidemiology. If you want to learn more about how the brain works, NUHS offers Biopsychology and Neuroscience. “Most of our students are interested in nutrition,” Dr. Swenson says. “That’s why NUHS has six separate courses in nutrition and food science available in the BS program.” NUHS is a primary destination for those seeking a professional career in natural health care. Originally founded in 1906 as a single purpose chiropractic college, National’s academic programs now encompass chiropractic medicine, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, oriental medicine, massage therapy, and more.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – Chicago Cubs pitcher Neil Ramirez surprised cancer patients at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital with autographs, hats, shirts and well-wishes Sept. 17. The 25-year-old reliever first visited outpatients and medical staff in the hospital’s Cancer Care Center, followed by a visit

to the inpatient oncology unit. “They were very surprised,” hospital spokeswoman Lisa Parro said. “It really made a difference for a lot of our patients. He just had a lot of really nice things to say to them. He was telling them he would pray for them and wish them well for their recovery – a real class act.” Advocate Health Care is the official health care sponsor of the Chicago Cubs, and Parro

said players make occasional visits to hospitals throughout the Advocate system. She said this was the first time a player had visited Good Samaritan as part of that sponsor relationship. Ramirez has had an outstanding 2014 campaign for the Cubs, pitching 40 innings in relief and compiling a 1.35 ERA despite missing time earlier this season with a sore right triceps muscle.

William Smith of Hinsdale is overjoyed after meeting and receiving an autograph Wednesday from Cubs pitcher Neil Ramirez. Ramirez paid a visit to the Good Samaritan Hospital cancer center and the oncology floor. Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com

things that had some French words, so it really sparked my interest. But I didn’t really have an opportunity to study language until I went to high school.” She said Ercoli encouraged her to become a French tutor to other students. “I really started to enjoy that interaction with other people and helping people learn new things,” she said. Besides the language, her French classes also are about teaching her students French culture. “I try to use as many authentic resources as possible, whether it’s a video clip or a commercial or a song or a reading piece,” she said. “We start looking at ‘How is it different? How is it similar? What’s the perspective?’” She uses her passion for food and cooking as part of the lessons, too, making crepes, cream puffs and croque monsieur. “One of the things I like to do in the classroom is a cheese tasting because the variety of cheese that American students are exposed to is generally limited to white and orange,” she said. Besides her students, Mi-

kulcik also is a leader among French teachers in the area. She has given presentations for the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages and the Illinois Council on Teaching Foreign Languages. She is a Teachers for Assessment and Language Learning Illinois leader, serving as a ICTFL resource for area foreign language teachers. Outside of her work, Mikulcik has a family with two young children to raise. She said she has to set boundaries in order to balance her school and home lives. “I’m committing myself to when I’m at school and when I’m at work, I’m 100 percent invested here,” she said. “I do have to bring my work home with me, and I set a time limit. Then I focus on myself and my family because that’s what makes me happy. When I get back to school, I’m reenergized and can go about my day.” Mikulcik said she is honored and excited to receive the Suburban Life Best Under 40 award. “It just warmed my heart that I was getting this award and that it reflects the love and passion I have for my craft and my students,” she said.

Restaurant reviews

Vistro serves Paul Virant take on family dining HINSDALE – I first attempted to stroll into Vistro on a Wednesday evening without a reservation. That was foolish, I quickly realized, when the hostess politely told me that it would be at least an hour wait. This is Paul Virant’s eagerly anticipated new family restaurant, after all, and the large space was packed – all the seats around the bar, all the tables in the back, all the waiting room in front. I’m impatient, so I made a reservation for the next evening, and returned to Hinsdale with my friend who has more patience with me than I would. The next night it was similarly busy, because, as a busser commented after our meal, “Everyone comes out for Chef Paul.” The mood was lively, with conversing couples, business professionals and families filling the tasteful but casual space. No sign identifies the building facade, but an interior, exposed brick wall is painted with a large Vistro logo bearing the motto: It’s all good. Not many children are likely to be found eating at Virant’s other two acclaimed restaurants, Vie in Western Springs and Perennial Virant in Chicago, so he has said he wants Vistro to be a place where every member of the family can find something appealing. And he has pulled it off. The menu has quesadillas and pizzas and other accessible options, joined by upscale touches such as the West Loop salumi selection. I noticed the dry-aged burger appeared to be the most popular item coming out of the kitchen, along with fried chicken. The drink menu is kid-friendly, as well, with every cocktail also available as a mocktail; and a selection of special sodas joins a short list of craft beers. A careful drink menu that

Undefeated Hinsdale Central, Glenbard West teams clash tonight By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Jimmy Thompson and his Hinsdale Central football teammates never take any opponent lightly. That goes double for Week 5 opponent Glenbard West. “We’re excited for the chance to play them,” said Thompson, a senior linebacker. “They’ve obviously had a pretty strong hold in the conference lately.” The Hilltoppers’ reign in the West Suburban Silver stretches back to head coach

Chad Hetlet’s second season in 2008. Since then, the Hilltoppers have lost just one conference game (to Lyons Township in 2010). “We haven’t beaten them since coach Hetlet’s been the coach there,” said Hinsdale Central head coach Dan Hartman, whose introduction to the rivalry comes in tonight’s game. “They’re a very tough team to prepare for. They do a lot on offense and a lot on defense.” While West no doubt presents a challenge for Central, the same is true the other way. Thompson and the Red Dev-

ils’ defense has been solid all season, and the offense is getting better each week in Hartman’s spread attack. Central has scored more than 40 points the past two games, including last week’s 42-14 win against Proviso West. “They’ve done a terrific job all year really limiting some good offenses to low numbers on the scoreboard,” Hartman said of the defense. “And the offense has started to pick up, which is really a tribute to the offensive line starting to put it together. We’re starting to be able to run the ball a little more consistently.”

Running behind Stefan Ivanisevic, Mike Johnson, Matt Allen, Doug Kramer and Richie Budicak, Christian Bobak ran for 152 yards against Proviso West. Juwan Edmond ran for 282 yards the previous week against York. One storyline to keep an eye on Friday is the status of quarterback Matt Rafferty. The senior sat the last two games with an ankle injury but returned to practice this week. In his stead, both Josh Bean and Thomas Ives started under center. “We still haven’t made a decision on him, so we’ll see,”

Hartman said of Rafferty’s status. “We might use a combination of all three this week. We’re not 100 percent sure yet.” What seems sure is that if Central hopes to win a conference title, it will need to win this game. The last time the Red Devils defeated Glenbard West was a 26-13 win in 2006. Last year, the Hilltoppers won 37-7. “They’re still a really good fundamental and disciplined team,” Thomas said. “It’s never going to be an easy game against them, but we definitely like our chances.”

Hinsdale South coaches and players huddle Sept. 5 during a timeout in a game against Downers Grove North. The Hornets’ biggest game of the season so far is tonight against Addison Trail. Robinson rushed for a pair of scores against Proviso East. Even though it took South some time to get going against the Pirates (the game was scoreless after a quarter), they got into a groove as the game went on. Regan’s dual-threat ability will give AT’s defense plenty to prepare for. “Robby’s doing great,” Barry said. “He’s progressing as we thought he would. His confidence level has increased and he’s throwing the ball well, so we’re really excited about him and our team moving forward.”

So far this season, the Blazers have allowed just 24 points through four games with a shutout against Downers Grove South. Hinsdale South is the highest-scoring team in the Gold (113 points this season) while AT has the stingiest defense. “At the beginning of the season, we thought we’d be in the mix for a championship, and as it turns out we are,” Barry said. “This game will kind of determine a lot going forward. Obviously there’s more games to play after this, but this is the only game that matters this week.”

South’s spread offense is averaging more than 24 points per game and faces the toughest defense in the West Suburban Gold. AT is surrendering just six points per game. The winner of this West Suburban Gold game not only takes control of the conference standings, but also becomes playoff eligible with five wins.

D sparks O in Downers Grove South win against Morton By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com BERWYN – Downers Grove South’s offense had struggled in recent games, so Jonah Johnson and the defense made some big plays to provide a boost. Johnson had two interceptions, including one on the first play of the game, and a fumble recovery as the defense forced four turnovers in total as South beat Morton 30-7 on Friday to improve to 2-2 on the season. The visiting Mustangs turned those turnovers into the first 12 points of the game. Jacob Baker ran in for a 4-yard score after Johnson’s first interception in the first quarter. Baker passed to Maxwell Soderlund for a 30-yard touchdown following an Eric Denby interception

late in the second quarter. “It means everything to us,” Johnson said of the win. “We got to get the offense moving. We had struggles in the first few games with that. Our defense is the core of our team and we all know that. As long as our offense keeps it up we can go far.” A Riley Heavey field goal just before halftime made it 150. Ryan Taylor had a 38-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Heavey passed to Baker for an 8-yard touchdown in the fourth. That gave Baker a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in the game. Baker started at quarterback in place of injured starter Jordan Skach. The senior completed his first nine pass attempts and didn’t have any turnovers. Soderlund caught

all 10 of Baker’s completions. “He was my quarterback my sophomore year so we always throw together,” Soderlund said. “He always takes the second team’s reps so I’m throwing with him a lot. It didn’t really throw us off much.” Soderlund had 124 yards receiving and eight receptions for more than 10 yards as Baker’s favorite target. Skach didn’t dress for the game after getting injured in Week 3 against Addison Trail. DGS plays an 0-4 Leyden team next week and is hoping to string some wins together to make the playoffs. “I think it was a good first step,” Soderlund said. “We need to start getting on a roll and I think this was a good team to play.”

DARIEN – Like the rest of his Hinsdale South football teammates, Marcus Curry is getting ready for one of the biggest games of the season tonight. But the Hornets aren’t preparing any differently for their trip to Addison Trail. “We’ve got a lot riding on this game, but we’ve worked hard all season so we know what to expect every Friday when we step out onto the field,” said Curry, a junior running back. “We just have to play our game and not let any mental stuff get to us. Just go play our game, a physical game.” The reason there’s a lot riding on tonight’s game is because the winner has the inside track for the West Suburban Gold title. AT and Hinsdale South are the only two undefeated teams in conference at 2-0 in the Gold. Both are undefeated on the season. “Huge game, 4-0 versus 4-0. We’re pretty excited about the opportunity we have,” Hinsdale South head coach Mike Barry said. Watch Hub Arkush and the rest of our coverage team break down this weekend’s Bears game on “Chicago Football Now” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on WCIU The U or at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on The U Too. it’s been awfully tough sledding for them on offense, where they are expected to dominate. The defending champion Seahawks are in good shape at 2-1, but their defense has shown some cracks against San Diego and Denver. The biggest disappointment has to be the 49ers, who’ve been outscored 52-3 in second halves this year and blown first half leads the past two weeks. While we knew they could be vulnerable on defense with a revamped secondary and awaiting the midseason returns of Aldon Smith and Navarro Bowman, it’s the 25 penalties they’ve committed in their past two games –

best players on defense during the offseason – Karlos Dansby to free agency, Daryl Washington to suspension and Darnell Dockett to injury, and then lost the fourth in John Abraham one week into the season. It also claimed victories two and three with quarterback Carson Palmer on the sidelines and in spite of the distraction of Jonathan Dwyer’s domestic abuse charges. The temptation is to assume the Cards will struggle to stay with Seattle and San Francisco, who are each more talented. But at this point, who’s to say they can’t? There is still plenty of time to sort all this out, but at this point of the season, Green Bay and San Francisco appear to be in trouble, and if the Saints fall in Dallas Sunday, they will be in big trouble. The surprise clubs to watch very closely the next few weeks will be the Cardinals, Texans, Bills, Chargers and Steelers. Any of those five that get to the midway point with five or six wins could be a real threat all year long.

extremely competitive, but still is coming up short in what looks like a much tougher AFC North than we anticipated just three weeks ago. That leaves Houston and Buffalo as this year’s top worst-to-first candidates. While both hit roadblocks in Week 3, the Bills have shown they possess a number of ways to beat you on their good days. The Texans appear capable of playing defense with almost anyone, and they will benefit from a lighter schedule than most in what may prove to be the league’s softest division this year. More puzzling to most is what’s wrong with the big boys right now? San Francisco, Green Bay, New Orleans and Indianapolis were all popular preseason Super Bowl picks. All four have played well in short stretches and extremely poorly in others. All sit at 1-2 right now. New England is 2-1, but

for more than 100 yards in losses – and their four turnovers versus the Bears that have killed them. New Orleans went from one of the league’s shakiest defenses in 2012 to one of the best in 2013, but it has really taken a step back early this year. The Saints were better in their home opener Sunday versus the A.P.-less Vikings, but let’s see what happens when they travel to Dallas in Week 4. The Packers were awful on defense the first two weeks. While they seemed to find some answers in Detroit, they can’t protect Aaron Rodgers and appear to be heading nowhere fast. Indianapolis bares watching as its two losses are to 2-1 Denver on the road and 3-0 Philadelphia. They were very impressive claiming its first win in Jacksonville. But with Robert Mathis now gone for the season with an Achilles tear, it’s hard to imagine the Colts going deep in the playoffs if they get there. Who’s the biggest surprise on the upside? That has to be the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona lost its three

One thing we’ve learned about the NFL in recent seasons is if you think you know who the real contenders are, just wait a couple of weeks and it will certainly change. Over the past two decades, no more than eight of 12 playoff teams have repeated. And in most of those seasons, back-toback playoff appearances have been more like a 50-50 proposition. Then, of course, there’s the worst-to-first transitions that have seen at least one and often two or three teams go from last in their divisions to first in just one season since the turn of the century. Still, with 2014 now already 19 percent complete, this is crazy! I don’t know about you, but I have no idea who the chalk is. It seems a safe bet that 2013 cellar dwellers Oakland, Jacksonville and Tampa will continue to struggle, while St. Louis and Minnesota appeared ready to compete until injuries and offthe-field issues felled key contributors Sam Bradford, Chris Long and Adrian Peterson.
