Rather, he focuses on the task at hand. “When I’m swimming, all I’m really thinking about is, like, my hand position in the water and my head position in the water,” Solberg said. “Real technical things about swimming.” He said that mental preparation for swimming came from his years training as a swimmer when he was younger, along with a challenge he made

While he admits swimming may be his strongest skill in the triathlon, Solberg said he prefers to bike. “I spend the entire bike part of the race with people going ‘woosh woosh woosh,’ passing me,” he said. But that fact doesn’t deter him, as he enjoys the chance to see the scenery around him and to feel the wind go by. Doing these long triathlons was the next step for Solberg,

after having done some marathons and an ultramarathon years before his first Ironman. “I’m not good at going fast,” he said. “And so in order for it to be challenging and interesting to me, I have to keep going longer and longer.” He said that at the end of a long training session, or at the end of a race, it’s like his brain has been working to problem solve for him. “I can have a clear idea of what I need to do to make something happen or kind of figure out a complex situation,” he said. “Or really understand something better than I did.”

The Union Church of Hinsdale is part of a regional church group made up of 200 churches in Illinois, the Illinois Conference, which has been a partner with the church in Angola. “That conference has had a partnership with the church in Angola for 10 years now,” Solberg said. HINSDALE – Swim, bike, run – a phrase and a set of obstacles that can be daunting for even the most fervent fitness fanatics. But for Union Church of Hinsdale Senior Pastor Mike Solberg, the 140.6 mile Ironman Triathlon is a right of passage and something to look forward to. From the time he was in high school, Solberg was in awe of any person who could do the three-part race. He remembered the feeling he had as he watched the first Ironman race from his home in 1978. “The original Ironman in Kona, Hawaii, was on Wide World of Sports, and I remember thinking ‘Wow, it would be really cool to finish one of those some day,’” he said. That moment always stuck in his mind, until the time when he did his first Ironman Triathlon in 2006. On Sunday, Solberg will compete in his third Ironman race. The triathlon that includes a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run will be held in Madison, Wis. As he prepares to head to Madison in the coming week, Solberg said the biggest challenge isn’t to push himself but to remain healthy so he can compete in the race, as this will be his first Ironman since turning 50. Yet this time, unlike during his first two Ironmans, he’s doing it for a reason besides himself. Solberg said he will be racing to raise money for a theological seminary in the African country of Angola. In the weeks leading up to the race, Solberg has raised about $18,000, which

D-181 hires two new Burr Ridge to go electronic, use tablets first-grade teachers By ZACHARY WHITE

zwhite@shawmedia.com

By ZACHARY WHITE zwhite@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Following an enrollment spike late in the summer, the Clarendon Hills-Hinsdale School District 181 recently hired two new first-grade teachers. District 181 Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources John Munch said increased kindergarten enrollment totals at Monroe and Walker schools caused the district to add a first-grade teacher to each building. “We’ve had a pretty big enrollment spike from kindergarten last year to first grade,” Munch said. The District 181 Board of Education approved the hiring of Jordan Thornquist for $49,746 and Sara Nichols for $65,664. Thornquist will be the firstgrade teacher at Walker School while Nichols will lead a Mon-

roe School first-grade class. Munch said Thornquist worked as a long-term sub in both Downers Grove and in Glen Ellyn before he was hired by District 181. Nichols spent four years in the Chicago Public Schools system, two years teaching first grade and two years teaching kindergarten, according to Munch. Even though they were hired later in the summer, Munch said the district had more than enough time to look at and interview candidates and get the highest quality teachers possible. “We got a real good look at both of them to make sure their skills are going to be up to [the district’s standards],” he said. In addition, the workloads of the two new hires is lessened because of the decreased number of students

BURR RIDGE – In an effort to decrease the amount of paper used, and to move toward a digital format, the Burr Ridge Village Board recently approved the purchase of a dozen tablets for local officials. At the Aug. 25 village board meeting, members approved the purchase of 12 Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablets, which will soon be purchased for and used by the seven board members and five department heads, according to Village Administrator Steve Stricker. “We looked at the cost of paper [and] determined if we purchased these tablets it could pay for itself in a year or a year and a half,” Stricker said. The board goes through $8,242.24 worth of paper every year, a tab that includes the cost of paper, equipment maintenance and toner for the printers, according to village finance director Jerry Sapp.

The 12 tablets will cost $890 each, according to Stricker, for a total price tag of $10,860. The electronics will be paid for out of the village’s information technology fund. “We set aside money every year to purchase new technology for the village,” Stricker said, adding that the fund currently has $203,000. While Stricker said members would not be explicitly required to use the tablets, explaining that documents would still be available in print if board members want them, the tablets should be the first place board members go for information and the paper version second. He said the time it will take for tablets to pay for themselves depends on how often they are used instead of paper copies. The board approved the move, but some members questioned how much the tablets could do. “One concern the board had was that they wouldn’t be able

to take notes on documents,” Stricker said. “Obviously with new technology you can [take notes on the tablet by using an app].” The move to an electronic format also will save the village man hours. Employees who would otherwise be busy preparing documents before meetings will be able to use the time to work on other tasks, Stricker said. He explained that the change to a digital format also ushers the board into the future and opens the door for more technological advancements. “This is 2014 and we want to enter the electronic age,” Stricker said. Stricker said the village is in the process of ordering the tablets and should have them within a month to six weeks. Tablet training will be provided to board members and department heads, and staff members will work with board members to familiarize them with the new devices.

HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Police Department will begin an initiative Sept. 8 to increase driver awareness near school zones by stopping drivers and issuing tickets. Police will be looking to enforce cellphone prohibitions in school zones, school zone speed limits, stop sign obedience and other traffic and parking violations that threaten the safety of pedestrians and other drivers, according to a Hinsdale Police Department news release. The crackdown is to alert drivers who have become accustomed to driving without children going to and from schools and may forget to obey school zone signs that often decrease speed limits in school zones, according to the release. Marked and unmarked

police vehicles will be positioned within the school zones throughout the village to serve as a visible reminder and to cite violators for not obeying the law. Traffic violations such as passing stopped school buses, child safety seat violations and not suing seat belts also will be addressed, the release stated. Also, since there are multiple construction projects in progress in Hinsdale that may affect travel routes near schools, the police also are reminding drivers to provide enough time to arrive at their destination safely, and to use caution in all construction areas to ensure the safety of workers, pedestrians, motorists and all other roadway users. For information, call the Hinsdale Police Department at 630-789-7086.

Woman inspired to support prostate cancer awareness By MEGANN HORSTEAD mhorstead@shawmedia.com Lemont resident Debbie Trinco doesn’t think there is enough awareness surrounding prostate cancer, and she is taking action to promote the cause. The cause hits close to home for Trinco, 59. Her husband, Darryl Trinco, also 59, has been receiving treatment for prostate cancer off and on since 2001, she said. Debbie Trinco said cancer doesn’t affect just the person battling it. She emphasized the overall effect it has on spouses, family and friends as well. “It’s not just an emotional and physical issue ... It definitely hurts couples, families and friends, too,” she said. Back in 2001, the Trincos had been planning to vacation in Aruba when Darryl developed a cough. Finding that the cough would not go away, they canceled their trip and Darryl went to see his doctor for a checkup. In noting concerns, a prostate-specific antigen test revealed a spike in his PSA numbers.

Lemont resident Debbie Trinco lays out her homemade pretzels decorated with blue for prostate awareness. Although screening for the disease typically does not begin until age 50, Darryl had developed prostate cancer at age 46. The Trincos wanted to determine what steps to take after ending his first round of treatment in summer 2004. At a get-together at the Trincos house, a friend of Debbie’s talked to her about the Support Educate Advocate Blue Prostate Chicago organization and its efforts to promote awareness. Within the same week, the Trincos turned to the Internet for more information. Unlike breast cancer, “there’s never really a clear cut procedure for prostate cancer,” said Eve Swire, Public

Making college more affordable for everyone Summer has ended, and that means it’s back to school time for families across the country. For those parents who recently loaded up the car and dropped their kids off at college, the excitement of another year of school is tempered by another year of looming tuition bills and ever increasing education expenses. To take some of the guesswork out of financial planning, the House passed the Strengthening Transparency in Higher Education Act, which creates a consumer-tested College Dashboard, giving students and parents the tools to fully understand the total cost of college before deciding where to COMMUNITY continue their education. VOICE Another bill, the EmPeter powering Students Through Roskam Enhanced Financial Counseling Act, provides interactive counseling through an online tool each year a student participates in a federal loan program. By increasing loan awareness and financial planning before and throughout the college experience, we can eliminate surprise expenses and ensure students work through available grant and scholarship options to shrink the size of their student loan. The House also passed two bills that would streamline the tax code, making it easier for families to use tax credits to make college more affordable. The Student and Family Tax Simplification Act consolidates four existing education provisions into a single, modernized and permanent American Opportunity Tax Credit that families can use to offset tuition expenses, fees and course materials. Middle- and low-income families would be eligible for a 100 percent tax credit for the first $2,000 of eligible higher education expenses and a 25 percent tax credit for the next $2,000 of such expenses, providing relief for those who need it the most. The House also voted to reform the Child Tax Credit, indexing it to inflation and eliminating the marriage penalty so families can more easily receive their full eligible amount. Simplifying education tax credits ensures families can get the most savings possible, and students can spend less time worrying about financing their education, instead focusing on developing the skills necessary to enter the workforce. Obtaining a quality education is key to bettering the lives of our children and ensuring their long term success, and getting a college degree shouldn’t mean a lifetime of student loan debt. These common-sense, bipartisan bills are a big step toward tackling the cost of higher education, and opening up more opportunities for the next generation.

Hinsdale Central’s Mark Dykstra takes a kick up field Aug. 29 past the Bolingbrook coverage team.

Thumbs up to the Hinsdale Central varsity football team for capturing a win against a highly touted Bolingbrook squad. The Red Devils went on the road Friday in their season opener, prevailing, 23-15, against one of the top defenses in the state. Congratulations to the players and new head coach Dan Hartman, we are all looking forward to the home opener Sept. 12 against York. Thumbs up to everyone who participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. As of Aug. 29, the outpouring of support from local residents and people all over the world has helped raise more than $100 million for the ALS Association, compared to $2.8 million from July 29 to Aug. 29, 2013. A handful of Hinsdale police officers and District 181 administrators recently accepted the challenge, but they were just a few of the local students, residents, business owners and elected officials to get in on the action. Hats off to all of you, you have made a substantial difference in the fight to find a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Alex Soulier, news editor asoulier@shawmedia.com 630-427-6247

SOUND OFF Wow, dogs can pee on your flowers. And you can have a flowerbed attract butterflies, finches and hummingbirds, but it’s considered a noxious weed. What a world. There is a trustee in the village of Stickney that collects Social Security because he has chronic fatigue syndrome. But he is at every meeting in the village and spends hours at the Village Hall. He is at Lions Club functions where he’s a member. Is he really chronically fatigued or is he committing Social Security fraud? The Social Security office needs to investigate this trustee and make sure he isn’t cheating the taxpayers of this village. Say no to fraud!

Taking issue with deep tunnel projects I just had a comment on the so-called deep tunnel projects. We live here in Hillside, it’s flooded again and all that, but so far, this deep tunnel project seems like transplanting a heart into some blood clots. Nothing still flows anywhere.

I want to respond to the person that said something about Ferguson and the video. They said that Brown was not a gentle giant. I don’t care what kind of giant he was. He did not deserve to be shot six times and two times in the head. He was a human being, OK? Wake up. We [are] tired of shooting people down. And as always – why [does] it always have to be a white cop and a black youth? Why is that – a white cop and a black youth? It’s never a black cop and a white youth. Why is that? It happened too many times. Give me a break, OK?

More about Ferguson, Mo. This is in response to the man who wondered about the riots in Ferguson, Mo. Rather than doing all that fancy thinking you’re doing, maybe you should do a little

All political candidates are liars about assets It’s humorous as how the people running for office accuse each other of using loopholes to not pay taxes. One example is having their money saved overseas in different accounts, which is just laughable because they all do the same thing. They all know where and how to hide their assets and then lie to the voters. Not everyone believes these lies, I hope.

each teacher will have. Before the two teachers were hired, both schools separated the first-graders into to classes of about 25 students, but after the teacher hires, there will be three classes at Monroe and Walker with fewer students in each classroom. “They’re down to 17, 18 per classroom,” Munch said. The district had 363 registered kindergarten students during the 2013-14 school year,

but Munch said they have about 400 students enrolled now. District 181 only offers partial-day kindergarten, and often there is an increase in the number of students enrolled in first grade. This is because parents who enrolled in full day kindergarten care elsewhere frequently bring their children back to the district for first grade, according to Munch. An enrollment spike between kindergarten and first grade is often the biggest enrollment increase the district sees, Munch said.

Career Connect Metro West to begin training program By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com The newly hired lead coordinator for manufacturing job training program Career Connect Metro West said after months of work and years of planning, it and partner agencies are ready to begin filling the empty manufacturing lines of DuPage County. Joe Dutra began his post June 2, hired with part of the $200,000 in seed money the DuPage County Board pledged to the effort in March. The initiative spawned by nonprofit DuPage United will accept its first class of workforce trainees Sept. 8, he said. “When DuPage United first started reaching out to the community several years ago, jobs were obviously the biggest concern,” he said. “So we started diving into solutions.” One solution was manufacturing. According to DuPage United, the county has the second biggest manufacturing industry in the state, behind Cook. But existing companies have had to turn away new business

Upcoming recruitment sessions ■ 7:15 to 8:30 p.m.

Sept. 16: Islamic Center of Naperville, 450 Olesen Ave., Naperville ■ 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 25: Hope’s Front Door, 1047 Curtiss St., Room 610, Downers Grove ■ 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 7: St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 4824 Highland Ave., Downers Grove

because of the lack of trained workers, Dutra said, and the organization estimates there will be 9,000 new, high-paying jobs in the field across the next 10 years vacated by retirees. “If we can’t replace those 9,000 jobs, manufacturing is going to leave,” he said. “If we put them in now, we can have experts in the field.” Manufacturing expansion also helps other industries, Dutra said, creating a trickle-down effect for the entire area.

During the past several months, Career Connect has hosted more than 20 recruitment sessions across the county, including last week at Glen Ellyn’s Faith Lutheran Church, one of DuPage United’s many faith-based partners. Faith Lutheran member Debbie Fulks, a volunteer organizer for the Aug. 20 session, said the church hosted 22 attendees – all but one individually recruited by Faith members, and only one a member of Faith. Fulks said recruitment efforts included speaking to church members, contacting area nonprofits and reaching out to a social worker at subsidized housing complex Marian Park in Wheaton. The prospective training participants are interviewed by Career Connect board members, including Dutra, and some move on to a second round of interviews and reading and math testing with jobs trainer Jane Addams Resource Corp. Resource Associate Director Regan Brewer said her organization looks for people who have a good attitude, are reli-

able and have an eagerness to learn the trade. The first set of classes in computerized numerical control and welding will run 3:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Technology Center of DuPage in Addison, Brewer said. Classes are open entry, meaning accepted candidates can begin whenever they like and leave when they are certified and have a job. While there are still some logistics to work out – Fulks mentioned transportation issues – Brewer said the partnership with the center was a “match made in Heaven” to provide a workplace-simulating environment. She said the goal for the DuPage program was to have 20 to 25 complete one of the two classes by the end of the year, with all certified in their field and safety certified with a forklift license. Dutra said he is reaching out to area nonprofits to help provide resources to program members, including day care. The involved groups will work with the Alliance for Illinois Manufacturing, a 600-strong partner organization, to place workers.

High-needs children living in the DuPage County area will have to go elsewhere to get specialized help now that a local nonprofit school has announced its closure. In a letter to DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin dated Aug. 19, Joseph Academy Founder and CEO Mike Schack addressed the end of the school’s DuPage County program. “After two years, we have not been able to sustain the Joseph Academy program in the former DuPage County Youth Home,” he wrote. The academy, which opened in December 2012 in Wheaton, served students with emotional, behavioral and learning challenges who were referred to the program through their school districts. Schack said his letter was sent “with a heavy heart,” citing a lack of federal and state funding for special education and low enrollment as the cause of the closing. In an interview with Suburban Life in March, Schack said the program hoped to have 18 to 20 students attend the school annually but only served eight a year ago. The academy began falling behind on its bills, owing nearly $12,000 in rent to its landlord, DuPage County, until the board voted to waive the backlog and allow the program to operate rent-free through the end of September. “The DuPage Board has

been most understanding and helpful through excellent maintenance and rental reductions during these years,” Schack wrote. “Joseph Academy was blessed with such a solid landlord. We are very grateful for the chance you provided and stand ready to serve in any capacity should a future need arise for an educational program in the facility.” Schack also stated the school submitted a grant proposal to Gov. Pat Quinn’s budget manager for the addition of a boarding school component, but receiving the grant appeared “a remote possibility.” The academy’s final day of occupation was Sept. 1. Cronin announced the closure publicly at the County Board meeting Aug. 26. “This school year, Joseph Academy locations across Chicagoland graduated 43 students,” he said. “The teachers and staff helped turn around the lives of those young people and their families. We believe in their devotion to serving this unique population of students with special education needs. We wish them well indeed, as they continue to operate Joseph Academy in other locations throughout the region.” The school also has sites in Des Plaines, Hometown and Melrose Park. County spokesperson Johnna Kelly said the children in the program were offered alternative placements and the county is looking at filling the vacancy left by the academy internally.

Old Vilnius Café imports taste of Lithuania DARIEN – Although I knew nothing about Lithuanian food, my companion was thrilled when I asked him to join me for dinner at Old Vilnius Café, named after the country’s capital. Inside the door sits a gift shop full of Lithuanian wares, many celebrating the 1992 bronze-medal Lithuanian Olympic basketball team. Mugs, T-shirts and amber jewelry line the shelves. The shop opens up into a small deli offering traditional candy, Lithuanian magazines and a variety of goodies to take home. Beyond the gift shop, the intimate dining room is a mix of cozy and elegant, with black padded leather chairs and dark wood furnishings lit softly by wall sconces. Old Vilnius Café serves Lithuanian and Eastern European cuisine, with dishes made in-house from scratch. During our visit, the waiter apologized when my companion ordered zeppelins, because the traditional dish of grated potato dumplings stuffed with minced meat had sold out, but he gladly offered a fried version as a substitute for the boiled. After reading through the menu, I decided to start with an appetizer of fried Lithuanian bread served with a warm cheese and garlic sauce. The strips of crispy bread were piled into a large bowl and smothered in gooey cheese. It was delicious, but very rich. I was glad to have someone helping me dig in before our main courses arrived. My companion sipped on warm red beet soup, borszcz, which I sampled and really enjoyed. A cold variation of the soup also is an option. Although our waiter tried to warn us, we ordered much more food than we could finish, but the place was a meat and potato lover’s paradise that proved hard to resist. Because it was my first time eating Lithuanian food, I

They came with a side of sour cream and bacon tidbits, as did many items on the menu. The savory dish was a delicious balance of starchy potatoes, salty bacon and cool sour cream. My eager dining companion, much more educated about the cuisine thanks to fond childhood memories of many of the dishes, ordered a combination plate to taste

a bit of everything. His plate arrived loaded with fried zeppelin, potato sausage, kugelis, Lithuanian sausage and sauerkraut. Of course, bacon and sour cream added their decadent flourish. My favorite was the kugelis, a baked potato cross between cake and pudding. It reminded me of twice-baked potatoes, but the best I’d ever had. In addition to a wide range of European chicken, beef and

pork entrees, the menu offers several all-American options such as chicken wings, Caesar salad and a bacon cheddar Angus burger. We ended up boxing half of our dinner to take home, but if I hadn’t been so stuffed, I would have loved to try a slice of raspberry cheesecake or chocolate lava cake. Cocktails, Lithuanian beer and wine also are featured. Old Vilnius Café combines

ethnic cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of options for Lithuanian food fans and those less familiar with the hearty dishes.

Red Devils ride momentum to win By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Matt Rafferty might end up getting most of the recognition following Hinsdale Central’s season-opening football win against Bolingbrook, but he wants to share the spotlight. Rafferty passed for 168 yards and two touchdowns in his first action at quarterback in years, but in his mind it was the Red Devils’ defense that helped spark the 23-15 win against highly-regarded Bolingbrook. “Our defense came up huge,” Rafferty said. “They held them a couple times and

we got to come out and just run the ball to close it out.” The Raiders came into the game regarded as one of the top teams in the state, but they were playing catch-up from the onset. They had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown less than three minutes into the game. Their ensuing possession ended with a failed fourth down conversion after which Central (1-0) struck quickly for a 74-yard touchdown that put the hosts in a 14-0 hole. The punt block was big, but the big strike to Thomas Ives was a major turning point. “To me, that second score

that we got [was big], just to get our offense to believe it could score on that defense,” Central head coach Dan Hartman said. “That got the momentum going in our favor.” Aug. 29 was Hartman’s first game on the sidelines for Central, and was the second time he won his debut game. He guided Evergreen Park to a 4214 win against Phillips in his first game there in 2011, but Aug. 29’s result might have been more impressive. “We walked out and they introduced Bolingbrook as the team that’s ranked No. 1 in every publication, that’s the deal,” Hartman said. “Our kids played hard, did their

jobs, did what they were supposed to do and played an awesome game.” Bolingbrook battled back to take a 15-14 lead at the half, but a combined sack for Central’s Brady Garber and Joe Budicak on the final play of the first half seemed to be a sign of things to come for the Raiders. “We just made too many mistakes and that’s something we’ll have to get corrected,” Bolingbrook head coach John Ivlow said. “Penalties and some special teams stuff we’ll have to get taken care of.” A 44-yard pass from Matt Rafferty to Ryan Doney on fourth down put Central ahead 20-15 with 3:02 to play in the

third quarter and was yet another momentum boost for the Red Devils. “Our coach tells us, on the run plays especially, if there’s two or more linebackers coming to check it down to our hot route, and Ryan Doney did a great job,” Rafferty said. Mark Dykstra’s interception two plays later set up a field goal that made it 23-15 entering the fourth. A failed fourth down conversion and a fumble recovered by Robby O’Neill cut short Bolingbrook’s final two drives of the game. “They’re a great team,” Hartman said, “but our kids stepped up and made plays.”

DARIEN – Skill position players get a lot of the glory in football. On Aug. 29, Ikjot Wahi, Darrick Miller, Chris Oehmen, Conner Pilch and Malik Gordon took their turn in the spotlight. In head coach Malik M i k e B a r r y ’ s Gordon eyes, the five offensive linemen were instrumental to the Hornets’ 27-14 win against Romeoville. “We gave our offensive player of the game to our O-line,” Barry said. “They did a great job.” With the line paving the way, Marcus Curry broke off a 49-yard run on South’s first

play from scrimmage and later added a 9-yard touchdown run that gave the Hornets a 14-0 lead. Quarterback Robby Re- Robby gan opened the Regan scoring with a 1-yard scamper early in the second quarter. Regan played extensively under center last season but Marcus d i d n o t b e g i n Curry the season as a starter. This year, he’s in control of the offense from the get-go. “He took the reins last year in our game against Downers Grove North, and since then we’ve seen him grow physically and mentally,” Barry said.

Hinsdale Central, South set for strong seasons By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The first serve has gone up on the girls volleyball season, and teams across the state will eventually be vying for berths in the state finals at Redbird Arena in Normal on Nov. 14 and 15. Here’s the outlook for Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South and other area teams.

Benet Redwings

“Everyone is very excited for the season. We have a very deep team with lots of girls that will be pushing each other,” head coach Brad Baker said. “This team is driven and motivated to have a successful season.”

nament at Benet. “Our team is very well-rounded,” head coach Kelly Moran said. “We are able to distribute the ball among several different athletes, and we are able to convert out-of-system to aggressive attacks.” The Red Devils are already off to a strong start. After defeating Hersey on Aug. 27, they placed second to 2013 Class 4A runner-up Benet at Benet’s own tourney last weekend. A tough tournament schedule that includes the Wheaton Classic (Sept. 17 and 20), St. Charles East’s Mizuno Cup (Oct. 10 and 11) and the Lyons Township Invite (Oct. 24 and 25) will help get Central ready for the playoffs.

Outlook: The Redwings and return a slew of players

graduated six starters from a team that made it to the state quarterfinals for the third consecutive year. Those kinds of losses might mean a rebuilding year for most programs, but Benet is not like most programs. The squad enters the season with six players who saw plenty of action last year. Rachael Fara, last year’s kills leader, is back and is committed to play in college at Northwestern. Other players with college offers include libero Natalie Canulli (Penn State), Meghan Weber (Wright State), and Tiffany Clark (Michigan) who plays libero in club but will switch to outside hitter for the Redwings. Sara Neilson, Maria Cyvas and Dana Griffin return after playing extensively last year. A tough tournament schedule takes Benet to the Wheaton Classic, the Mizuno Cup and Glenbard East’s Autumnfest. Some of the stiffest competition may come in practice as players like Lauren Berto, Paige Hembrough, Lina Lietuvninkas, Lilly Johnson and Gretchen Rudel will be battling for varsity playing time.

who gained valuable experience last year and who have improved in the offseason. Among the returners is outside hitter Katie Vondra, who fueled the offense last season. Middle hitter Cassie Lueken is also back, as are key defensive cogs Jess Faber and Hannah Wood. Senior newcomer Shannon Galway adds to the depth on defense. Setters Megan Muench and Renee Kryk both saw ample playing time last season. “I believe that with this group of girls and how hard they’ve been working all summer that our season will be an improvement from last year,” head coach Trisha Kurth said. “We are hoping to make some huge gains at the net this year and with our teamwork.” Tournaments at Wheaton Warrenville South and Maine West (Oct. 17 and 18) add to a tough schedule that includes matches against Downers Grove North (Sept. 10), Neuqua Valley, St. Charles East and Naperville Central.

Outlook: After struggling at times last season, the Hornets return with a fairly young team that has eight seniors and five freshman and sophomores (plus four juniors). A young group can be both a positive and negative, according to had coach Lisa Tazelaar. “Youth, which is also a struggle at times, is also a strength,” the coach said. “I believe this team is hungry this season. They do not want to repeat last year.” As the young players develop, the Hornets will be looking to improve on their passing, which will in turn lead to running a faster offense. South posted a 2-3 record at the Plainfield North tournament last weekend, its first big tourney of the season. The Hornets will be tested against some of the best teams in the state at the Wheaton Classic tourney, the Mizuno Cup and the Lyons Township Invite.
