ichelle Francque-Burns has always loved to cook. She started out in the food industry as a dietitian, having fallen in love with the science of cooking. Now, she’s been catering for 31 years and offers a full-service restaurant, catering, and bar service for all weddings and events – big and small – along with her partner, John French, at Smoked on 3rd. Walking into Smoked on 3rd on a Friday morning is a little like arriving early to the summer family reunion – quiet, fresh, and clean, a couple of bright smiles coming to greet you, and the smell of sweet, smoky brisket hanging in the air. Michelle’s enthusiasm for decor takes charge of the space, along with her hospitality, with wedding decor that she creates herself: floral garlands that wrap around the stairwell banister and peachy, summer wreaths dangling delicately from their rustic, wooden frames. Michelle and John have a “we’ll-takecare-of-it” philosophy for any wedding or event. From the appetizers, entrees, and desserts, to the table decorations, centerpieces, and overall event coordination and planning, Michelle says, “Relax. Don’t worry. We’ll take care of it.” Michelle offers brides wedding consultations, themed decor, and the advantage of catering to anyone’s dietary needs, from gluten-free to vegetarian. Food options are broad and not limited to just barbecue. “We can bring in anything and everything,” she said. Favorite meal options include brisket, pulled pork, shrimp, smoked turkey,

Providing quick service and attention to detail is part of her approach, along with making sure to keep the drinks flowing and the food ready to serve in a way that looks great. “People eat with their eyes as well as their stomachs,” she said. “I love to stage and make food beautiful.” Brides and grooms are welcome to reach out to the couple to meet and

Memories with Main Moments Dixon woman has been helping local brides for decades BY AVALYNDA CASEY For I Do

D

o you need some alterations done on your dress? There’s a woman in Dixon with decades of experience who can help you look perfect on your special day. Cheryl O’Hare, 57, of Dixon, started sewing before age 8, making doll clothes on her mother’s sewing machine. Raised in Amboy, she started making all her own clothes at 9 and wore them everywhere. “I remember Ms. Helen

Glessner’s sewing class in junior high,” she said. “I made my eighth grade graduation day outfit. I was very proud.” She had completed her first wedding dress the year before for her older sister’s friend. “I love to sew. I enjoy the ability to make something I like, with better quality than you can find in the stores,” she said. “It drives me crazy when plaids aren’t matched, and hems aren’t hemmed.” O’Hare also made bridesmaid dresses, matching multiples of different sizes for some of her 5 sisters. She added alteration services and similar projects in high school. MEMORIES continued on 144

A few years ago, O’Hare moved to Dixon so that she could serve more customers. Along with new dresses, she enjoys re-making mother’s and grandmother’s wedding dresses into heirlooms for children’s baptism, first communion and prom. It takes her over a month to make a custom bridal gown. “Not everyone can sew or make a correct alteration. I have seen dresses sadly gape in the front, or seams not sewn straight,” she said. She also makes custom curtains, pillows, bedspreads, duvets, seat cushions and more. O’Hare started college in 1977, focused on fashion design, fashion merchandising, and retail management. She completed almost 2 years at the Minnesota School of Business, learning more cre-

She returned home with more motivation to expand her abilities. Through needing a job to pay her bills, Cheryl kept sewing her own clothes, and word-of-mouth kept her busy. From 1980 to 1983, Cheryl joined the Army in communications, and when she completed her service, she returned home to be close to her parents, still in Amboy. She worked for years in bookkeeping and since she had to dress up, she made her own suits.

“People noticed,” she said. “They’d ask where I bought it, and then, they’d want me to sew for them.” Cheryl’s family always supported her in business and the ups and downs of life. Her parents, the late William and Sophie O’Hare, raised 6 daughters. O’Hare, the middle daughter, cherished time with her family. “Dad worked at Amboy Leffleman’s more than 20 years, and my parents set good examples,” she said. “When Dad passed away, everyone wanted a tractor from his vast collection. They knew they were in perfect running order.” After both parents passed and the last house she rented came up for sale, one sister gave her good advice: move to Dixon.

So, she bought the house of her dreams and in the past 3 years, her client base has grown. “I really care about the customer – how the clothing fits, that she likes it, that she is comfortable in it, and that she feels like she looks good in it.” she said. “I love to use expensive fabric, intricate detail work, and antique lace. Every piece is unique. Even if you aren’t a bride, you should still feel beautiful.” O’Hare works at JCPenney in Sterling, but will be losing her job when the store closes. “I’ll be looking for something else, and I’ll keep sewing,” she said. It’ll surely be the lessons that her parents taught her that will help O’Hare continue to be successful. “I think I get my passion for sewing from my parents,” she said. “They taught me the value of hard work and integrity of spirit.”

Scenes set by Cindy Photographer focuses on small weddings, offers ‘redo sessions’ Photos by Peter Balser/pbalser@saukvalley.com

Dixon’s Cindy Weidman poses for a photo at Lowell Park. Weidman is the owner of Photos by Cindy, and has shot all kinds of events during her 7 years in the business. Look to the right for examples of her work.

P

BY ALI BRABOY For I Do

hotos by Cindy has got you covered when it comes to small weddings. Cindy Weidman, 35, of Dixon, started Photos by Cindy about 5 years ago, and after a small hiatus from covering weddings, she’s back at it. When the business first started off, she had done a couple weddings, but she stopped doing them because of the time commitment it required in her already busy session schedule. A wedding can be more than a 10-hour work day, and the editing after can include more than 40 hours of work. Wedding photography is much more than going to the event and snapping the photos. Weidman wants to make sure each photo’s great. Weidman will shoot before or after the wedding if someone doesn’t want a photographer for the whole day. She is only doing small weddings at this time because of her busy work flow. She’s not sure whether she’ll expand and do fullscale weddings in the future. In terms

of small weddings, she means ones that involve smaller bridal parties and family gatherings. Weidman plans to offer “redo sessions” for people who didn’t have a photographer at their wedding, but later wished they had. It could be for someone who was married years ago and wants new photos, among other reasons. She said when she got married about 14 years ago she doesn’t remember there being digital photography. “I bet there’s more people out there like me who would like to redo their wedding session again,” Weidman said. She tries to capture emotion in the people she’s photographing. “That’s what will make someone love the photo,” she said. Initially just a hobby, she’s been doing photography for about 7 years. She enjoys the details, the small things people overlook. For weddings, she’s drawn to the more candid moments of the bride and groom. She said she prefers to photograph outdoor weddings, a setting that’s always interested her.

She was worried she wouldn’t have the same love for photography after starting the business, but she still loves going to every photo shoot. She loves seeing returning clients, seeing them grow older. “I feel like I’m part of their family,” Weidman said. Her work hours vary, but she offers shoots every day of the week. She prefers evening shoots that take place during the last couple of hours of sunlight, when there aren’t as many harsh shadows and the sun isn’t making people squint. Those interested in booking Weidman for their wedding should contact her 6 months to a year in advance, to guarantee their date. She realizes this isn’t always possible, and she’ll do what she can if there’s a shorter notice. The operation wouldn’t be possible without the assistance and support from her family and friends, including her husband, Andy Weidman, 36, and their children, Austin, 11, and Alexis, 8.

For weddings, Cindy Weidman’s drawn to the more candid moments of the bride and groom. She said she prefers to photograph outdoor weddings, a setting that’s always interested her.

Check out what’s new at Champs Champs Banquet Venue can seat up to 150 people

The venue is located at 9 E. Third St., which is the upper level of Champs Sports Bar & Grill, Sterling. To book a wedding, call 815-626-6003. Find Champs Banquet Venue on Facebook or email champs.banquetvenue@ yahoo.com for more information.

BY ALI BRABOY For I Do

hamps Banquet Venue offers an affordable location with a rustic look in downtown Sterling. The venue, which has been open since 2015, holds up to 150 people. The outside patio seats 40. Since openinG, owner Denny Strader, 61, of Sterling, said the banquet has hosted about 20 weddings. “I enjoy seeing people have a good time,” Strader said. The venue caters food to smaller groups of about 20 to 30 people, but outside food service is available for larger groups. There’s a full-bar service, and people can bring in live entertainment.

Peter Balser/Pbalser@saukvalley.com

Denny Strader, owner of Champs Sports Bar & Grill, poses for a photo at Champs Banquet Venue (also shown on page 26) – which opened above to bar in 2015. Renting the venue for Friday and Saturday is $700. The venue is also available from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, so people can choose different days. The price varies based on the day and the number of

people in attendance. Below Champs Banquet Venue sits Champs Sports Bar & Grill. Strader has owned that establishment for 26 years. He created the banquet venue because people weren’t

going out to bars as often as they had in the past. He renovated the entire upstairs, exposing the natural brick walls and original hardwood floors. He’s currently working on an addition to the venue, which will offer more seating. He said he hopes to have it open and usable around September or October. If you’re interested in this venue, act quick, because there are already more than 12 weddings booked for 2018.

www.saukvalley.com

Before the big date: A wedding checklist 9 months before

o Choose your wedding date. If you plan to be married in a church or temple, clear the date and time with the clergy. o Announce your engagement in local newspapers. o Set your budget. Take time for a heart-to-heart talk with your fiancé about the budget and style of your wedding, reception and wedding-related parties, and who pays for what. Consider hiring a bridal consultant. If your budget won’t allow that, enlist relatives and close friends to help – especially in areas where you feel you need support. o Compose your guest list. Let out-of-town guests know your wedding is in the works so they can make travel plans. o Reserve the reception site. o Choose wedding attendants. o Select your wedding gown, shoes and accessories. o Decide on bridesmaids’ dresses. o Determine the theme or mood you’d like to establish with the food, table settings, flowers and entertainment at your reception. o Interview caterers, musicians, florists, photographers, videographers and cake makers. Get written estimates of their costs. Keep track of your discussions and their bids in a notebook or with wedding-planning software.

6 months before

o Choose your caterer, musicians and florist. Remember to get written contracts. o Book your photographer and videographer. o Select your baker and order the cake. o Decide on your color scheme. o Shop for wedding rings with your fiancé. o Decide on your honeymoon destination. Work with a travel agent to book your travel and accommodations. o Select your wedding invitations. Don’t forget to purchase personal stationery for your thank-you notes.

4 months before

o Register for gifts at one or more bridal-gift registries. o Help both mothers to coordinate and shop for their wedding-day attire. o Select music for the ceremony and reception.

o Choose readings for your wedding and write your wedding vows. o Plan a rehearsal dinner for members of your wedding party, your family and out-of-town guests. Reserve the location. o Arrange hotel accommodations for members of the wedding party who live out of town. Reserve a block of rooms for other out-of-town guests, and let them know the rooms are available. Remember to ask for any group discounts or special packages. o Reserve your wedding-day transportation and any other wedding-day rental needs. o Make appointments for gown fittings. o Check the requirements for a marriage license. o Make sure contracts and arrangements are complete with all of your service providers.

3 months before

o Prepare directions, including simply drawn maps, if necessary, to help guide guests to the wedding and reception, and to hotels. For guests who will travel a long distance, consider assembling an information package on fun things to do and see in your area. o Begin addressing invitations and announcements. Select a special stamp at the post office. Invitations should go in the mail 6 to 8 weeks before your big day. o Give the caterer or other food suppliers a close idea of the number of guests you expect. o Make sure all reservations are in place for honeymoon travel. o Check with bridesmaids to make sure they have their gowns and are getting them adjusted. o Shop for gifts for your bridesmaids. Offer to help your fiancé select gifts for his attendants. o Select your “going away” outfit and special items for your trousseau. o Make a date with your photographer for formal portraits. o Make an appointment to have your hair done just before your portrait session and again the day or so before your wedding. Consider including your bridesmaids in a “day of beauty” before your wedding, with manicures, hair styling, massages and makeup sessions.

2 months before

o Mail out your wedding invitations and announcements.

o Have wedding portraits taken. o Send bridal portrait and wedding announcement to newspapers for publication. o Finalize the music that will be played during your wedding ceremony. o Meet with musicians who will provide entertainment during your reception and orchestrate precisely what you want and when you want it played. o Don’t be shy to voice your preferences, down to the volume, favorite songs you’d like to hear, or even songs you don’t want played. o Plan your rehearsal dinner and a brunch or fun activity for out-of-town guests to enjoy on the day following your wedding. o Buy special accessories for your wedding-day attire. o Plan a luncheon for your bridesmaids. o Make appointments for a hairdresser, makeup artist and manicurist. o Finalize honeymoon plans. If you’re traveling overseas, check again that your passports are current and that you have any necessary visas. o Gather necessary birth or baptismal certificates you might need for your wedding license.

1 month before

o Get your wedding license. o Have a final fitting of your gown and make sure your attendants have theirs. o Check that your menu selections and service plans are locked in place with the caterer. o Purchase a special book to keep track of wedding gifts as they arrive. o Keep writing those thank-you notes on a daily basis! o If you plan a formal dinner for your reception, it’s time to draw up a seating plan and make up place cards. o Check with your florist to confirm dates and times of flower deliveries. o Review your wedding-day transportation plans and make sure drivers are clear about addresses, times and number of passengers. o Make name or address changes official on documents, including driver’s license, Social Security forms and financial accounts. Fill out change-of-address forms at the post office. o Meet with your photographer to specify the formal shots you

want taken of the bridal party, as well as specific, candid shots you’d like taken during the reception. o Review the video plans with your videographer.

2 weeks before

o Keep writing those thank-you notes for wedding gifts! o Pick up your wedding rings. Make sure any special engraving appears precisely as you wished. o Begin packing for your honeymoon. 1 week before your wedding o Make final checks with all your vendors: officiant, musicians, florist, photographer, videographer, limousine or other transportation provider, caterers and baker. o Ask a friend or family member to arrange for wedding gifts that may be brought to your reception to be delivered to your home or another safe spot. o Wrap gifts for bridal attendants and have them ready for the rehearsal dinner. o Purchase travelers’ checks and reconfirm honeymoon travel and hotel plans. o See that checks are written and ready to be handed out to vendors at the agreed-upon time. o Inform your caterer of the final number of guests. Confirm that out-of-town guests are set with hotel accommodations, transportation and wedding-day directions.

The day before

o Take time to relax and enjoy a massage, manicure and pedicure. o Traditionally, this is the day for your rehearsal ceremony and rehearsal dinner. Have fun! o Turn in early for a good night’s sleep.

o Allow plenty of time for dressing, makeup and hair styling. o If you plan on photography before the ceremony, allow ample time so you’re not rushed. o Relax, and remember: This is your special day, the result of all your careful planning. Now it’s time to enjoy. Take a deep breath. Refuse to let any glitch get to you. Savor every moment of this sacred day. Let your joy and happiness shine through.

Groom’s Checklist BY ROBERT MORTIZ The Knot

So, you finally got up the nerve to pop the big one. Now it’s time to start doing some heavy wedding lifting. Here’s a list of your most essential to-dos.

12 months before

3 months before

n Figure out where you’re going to have your ceremony and reception. The best spots fill up fast, especially for summer and fall, so decide your wedding size and start looking. n Organize your guys. After you ask your best man to do the honors, make up your groomsman list. For crowd control, you’ll want at least one usher per 50 guests. n Get what you want. Crazy as it seems, people start buying you gifts immediately, and registering may be the only way to keep your friends’ and relatives’ questionable tastes in check.

n Get ready for the freeloaders. Your out-of-town guests need a place to stay, so unless you’ve got a couple dozen spare bedrooms, decide on a hotel and reserve a block of rooms. Let them know this in your invitations. n By this time, the guest list should be finalized – i.e., it has the bride, groom and parents’ approval. Time to send out the invitations. n Get dressed. So what will it be? Tails and top hat or traditional Scottish kilt? Decide and buy (or rent), then pick out your groomsmen’s getups. n Give a jeweler your finger to be measured. Let your fiancée do the same, and then order your wedding rings. Decide on inscriptions. n If you’re going to tie the knot, you may have to get your blood tested. It’s the law in some states.

9 months before n Meet and greet suitable officiants. Priest, rabbi, justice of the peace, officially sanctioned Elvis impersonator – the choice is yours. n Book the talent. It’ll probably fall to you to choose the band or disc jockey. Be sure to get references and hear music beforehand – and run it by your bride before you sign on the dotted line. n Start drawing up your guest list. This is something you’ll probably want to get your parents in on, too.

6 to 8 weeks before

n Have a good time, but don’t do something stupid. It’s your bachelor party and last chance to go crazy without the ball and chain legally attached.

1 week before
