Weight-Loss Surgery at Silver Cross Gives Mom New Lease on Life When Jill Wojciechowski and her husband Brian decided to start a family, they couldn’t imagine the struggles that lay ahead of them, including visits to a fertility specialist and years of heartache before finally conceiving their now 7-year-old son John. The biggest hurdle they faced: Jill’s health complications and her weight.
MORE ENERGY AND CONFIDENCE Just over two years later, Jill has lost more than half her body weight. At 144 pounds, she has a new lease on life and couldn’t imagine what her life would be like if she hadn’t mustered the courage to commit to her health. But the energetic wife and mother is quick to point out surgery was not the easy way out. “This is definitely a lifestyle change, not a onetime fix-all,” she explains. “You have to work hard at it.” These days, Jill has more confidence and energy than ever before. She’s also a lot more social. “I maintain my good health by walking every single day, playing with my son John and
High blood pressure, asthma, and acid reflux were just a few of the issues she faced. At 304 pounds, and after two prior attempts at weight-loss surgery where Jill admittedly “chickened out” at the last minute, they knew it was time. “Brian and I fought so hard Before and after – following weight-loss surgery at Silver Cross Hospital, to have our son, John; I Jill Wojciechowski has lost more than half her body weight and has a new knew I could not check out lease on life. now,” she explained. keeping up with the nutritional class with BMI every three That’s when she set up an appointment with BMI Surgery months,” she said. She also follows the eating and drinking at Silver Cross Hospital and officially began her incredible guidelines of the “Bariatric Bible” to the letter and relies on her weight-loss journey. “support team, which includes my proud parents, my loving husband, Brian and my amazing co-workers.” MAKING THE DECISION Every Wednesday, the BMI team hosts an informational group meeting called Obesity & Your Health for individuals considering weight-loss surgery. BMI surgeon Dr. Christopher Joyce speaks to patients and family members directly to answer questions. “BMI’s reputation meant everything to me,” Jill said. “They have a ‘fan following,’ and their results speak for themselves.” Under the care of Dr. Joyce, Jill underwent gastric bypass surgery in August 2016. She remained in the hospital for two days where she received kind and compassionate care from Silver Cross Hospital staff. “The nurses at Silver Cross who were in charge of my after-care while still an inpatient were wonderful; they were so knowledgeable about my procedure and knew exactly how to care for me.”
In November of 2017, Jill and her family fulfilled a longtime wish when they ventured to Disney World in Florida. “I had no fear of not being able to fit on the ride! It made John so happy that his mom could do this with him!” When asked if she would go through this procedure all over again, Jill said emphatically, “I have no regrets!” To find out more about the bariatric surgery program at Silver Cross Hospital, attend a free informational session on both traditional and laparoscopic surgery on any Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. at BMI Surgery at 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., Suite 260, New Lenox. 5 reasons to try apple cider vinegar
How puzzles promote health, wellness
Apple cider vinegar, or ACV, is a type of vinegar that has recently skyrocketed in popularity due to its purported health benefits. ACV is formed from cider or apple must and has a long history as a home remedy, making it the most popular type of vinegar in the natural health community. The following are just a handful of the purported benefits credited to ACV. 1. ACV improves healthy gut flora. Like other fermented foods and beverages (think yogurt and kombucha), ACV is rich in enzymes and probiotics. Probiotics can aid in digestion and make sure that the digestive system is working efficiently. According to the health and wellness team at MyFitnessPal, unpasteurized ACV can deliver probiotics and energize digestion. 2. ACV can be used as a disinfectant. ACV and other vinegars can kill harmful bacteria or prevent them from multiplying, according to Healthline. Reader’s Digest indicates that gargling with ACV can soothe a sore throat and create an acidic environment in the esophagus that most germs can’t survive. 3. ACV contributes to feelings of fullness. According to dietician and certified diabetes instructor Katie Rankell at UC Irvine Medical Center, ACV has been shown to lower blood sugar by reducing the absorption of carbohydrates, while also contributing to feelings of fullness that can help people avoid overeating. 4. ACV naturally lowers cholesterol. A 2016 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found consumption of the acetic acid found in ACV reduced serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels in rats. More research is needed to determine if humans can reap similar rewards. 5. ACV can treat dandruff and other skin ailments. The acidity of ACV changes the pH of the skin and scalp, making it harder for yeast to grow. Applying ACV to the scalp can inhibit dandruff. It also can be used as a toner that exfoliates the skin and makes it less oily.
Puzzles are fun and entertaining, but their benefits go beyond simple recreation. Puzzles often stimulate problem-solving centers in the brain and can improve brain health. Researchers have found that, by completing crossword puzzles, playing challenging games or doing other puzzlerelated activities, individuals may be less likely to develop brain plaques that have been tied to Alzheimer’s disease. Data published in the Archives of Neurology found a distinct connection between people who exercised their minds with stimulating activities in their early and middle years and brain health. This group had less Betaamyloid protein uptake in their brains, which is linked to the onset of Alzheimer’s, than those who didn’t engage in puzzles during the same time frame. Beyond their health benefits, puzzles offer some additional perks. • Puzzles boost vocabulary. Puzzles such as crosswords or codewords/cryptograms introduce people to new words. This helps people expand their vocabulary and can help them improve their spelling. • Puzzles teach patience. Puzzles can be challenging, and such challenges can promote patience in regard to approaching and realizing goals. • Puzzles can reinforce lessons. Teaching through puzzle play is an effective way to tap into memory retention while making lessons fun. • Puzzles may improve intelligence. Engaging in puzzles can force players to think and reason using general knowledge, memory, spatial imagery, and logic. These skills help to sharpen intellect over time. Researchers at the University of Michigan even found that adults could boost their IQs by four points after spending 25 minutes a day doing puzzles. • Puzzles reinforce concentration. Concentration is required to find words hidden in a word search puzzle or to solve a brainteaser. According to data on SelfGrowth.com, puzzles naturally induce a state of creative, focused meditation.

Robotic Spine Surgery at Silver Cross Gets Mom Moving Again J
essica Noble felt so good after spinal fusion surgery in July, she attended her cousin’s bachelorette celebration just two weeks later!
That’s because the 29-year-old Oak Lawn woman had a revolutionary new kind of robotic spine surgery…available only at Silver Cross Hospital. “Some of the girls in the party didn’t even know I’d had surgery,” the 29-year-old Oak Lawn woman boasted. But prior to the life-changing procedure performed by orthopedic spine surgeon Chintan Sampat, M.D., Noble had near-constant lower back pain, initially caused by a college volleyball injury and made nearly unbearable by a head-on car collision last fall. The pain often radiated down her right leg, making standing and walking uncomfortable. She tried physical therapy, pain medications and spinal injections to no avail. As a working mom with a 3-year-old toddler to chase after, Noble was desperate for a solution. Then a cousin referred her to Dr. Sampat, and the rest is history! The Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery at Silver Cross is the first in Illinois and the entire tri-state area to use a navigation-guided robotic system to enhance the safety and accuracy of minimally invasive robotic spine surgery. And Jessica was the first patient to experience its benefits.

Excelsius GPS Navigation-Guided Robot First-of-its-kind in Tri-State Area This map and real-time 3D images taken during surgery help the surgeon maneuver a robotic arm to the exact location for precisely placed spinal screws, with the robot guiding the direction, depth and angle of the surgeon’s hands. “The surgeon is still in complete control, but this new robotic instrument offers the added benefit of 3D-guided navigation, which allows for precision and success during robotic spinal fusion surgery,” Dr. Sampat explained. Since it’s minimally invasive and streamlined, patients experience less pain, scarring, and blood loss, fewer complications, less radiation exposure and a faster recovery so they can return to doing what they enjoy. Jessica is proof of that! The busy working mom is keeping up with her daughter once again and looks forward to resuming fitness workouts after she completes physical therapy. “I couldn’t do that before without a lot of pain,” she said. “I may even go back to playing sports.”

Retirement Living … and a Little Bit More Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home (OLA) is a resident-centered, caring, senior living community that offers several levels of care for seniors. Levels of care include, independent living, sheltered care, intermediate nursing care, rehabilitation and skilled care, respite care, and palliative and hospice care. Sheltered care is often viewed as the best of both worlds: an affordable level of nursing care that bridges the gap between independent living and intermediate nursing care. Residents have as much independence in their own private rooms as they want with the knowledge that personal care and support services are available when needed. Sheltered care provides residents with 24-hour supervision and emergency assistance, housekeeping, three prepared meals with open dining options, optional assistance for bathing and dressing, optional staff administering of medication, individualized and group Memory Care Programs, and a variety of social activities. A scheduled transportation service to nearby appointments and shopping is also available.
As with all of OLA’s levels of care, residents can also take advantage of daily mass in the OLA chapel. Residents seeking spiritual guidance or simply a listening ear can speak with OLA’s full time Director of Mission and Spirituality. Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home offers a continuum of care aimed to meet the needs of each resident. With sheltered care living services, residents can enhance their quality of living while enjoying the place they call home. Call and schedule a tour to learn more. Joliet OncologyHematology Associates offers university-level treatments in comfort of Will County location
Joliet Oncology-Hematology Associates, Ltd.
by Allison Selk JOHA has grown from one office on the west side of Joliet to three offices, which includes one in New Lenox near Silver Cross Hospital and a satellite site, The Women's Center, 410 E. Lincoln Hwy., in New Lenox, Dr. Ellen Gustafson said. The group offers eight medical oncologists, as well as two radiation oncologists. Gustafson said the practice has a goal to see the patient within 24 hours of appointment request, and, due to the large number of physicians, this goal has become a reality.

At the main location on Jefferson Street in Joliet, patients receive all imaging right in the office. Other perks include yoga classes and wig and prosthesis services. The New Lenox office offers physician appointments and close proximity to I-355. Both the Jefferson Street location and the New Lenox location offer on-site pharmacists, who work with the insurance companies and, at times, can get the medications cheaper for the patient. “We put a lot of effort into easy and smooth logistics. The patients are under enough stress; they don’t want to have to wait and fight for appointments and prescriptions,” Gustafson said. Gustafson said The Women’s Center specializes in breast cancer and offers a one-stop consultation for the patient. During the appointment, the patient will have the opportunity to see the medical oncologist, surgeon and radiation oncologist in one visit, instead of multiple visits, which sometimes takes months to plan. “The universities are doing a combined modality conference with patients, and this is what we do at the Women’s Center. The cancer patient does not want to wait; it’s a big bonus for (them),” Gustafson said. The eight physicians have over 150 years of combined experience, but value continued education. Once a month, medical professionals from universities all over the country meet with the JOHA doctors and give a lecture on their expertise and latest treatments. “We also send cases to them and get opinions from across the country,” Gustafson said. Gustafson said JOHA physicians work together for the care of the patients. They bounce ideas off of one another, match physicians and patients to find the perfect fit, and refer patients for second opinions at the patients' requests. “We are honest and send the patient where they can be best served, but 99 percent of the patients can be treated here,” Gustafson said.
Providing Dignified Care in the Heart of Your Community Joliet Oncology-Hematology Associates (JOHA) has been providing quality cancer treatment since 1981. With a combined physician experience of more than 150 years, we offer the most innovative and comprehensive care under one roof. Three convenient locations: Joliet (West), Morris and New Lenox.

Strategies that can help build strong immune systems A strong immune system can go a long way toward ensuring one’s overall health. But bolstering one’s immune system is no small task, as even medical researchers admit there is still much to learn about the links between lifestyle and immune function. The Harvard Medical School notes that a strongly functioning immune system requires balance and harmony. So it stands to reason that a highly unhealthy lifestyle will compromise the immune system, but it’s also worth noting that pushing the body too hard in the other direction also can adversely affect immune function. Researchers continue to study the potential links between immune response and variables such as diet, exercise, age, and psychological stress. Though studies are ongoing, the Harvard Medical School notes that the immune system is bolstered by various strategies associated with healthy living. • DON’T SMOKE. Smoking is linked to a host of diseases and ailments, so it’s no surprise that it also compromises the immune system. The National Cancer Institute notes that cigarette smoke contains high levels of tar and other chemicals, which compromise the immune system’s ability to effectively combat infections. The effects of smoking on the immune system are both immediate and long-term. Smokers’ immune systems may not be able to fend off common infections like the common cold as effectively as the immune systems of nonsmokers. And over time, as smokers keep smoking, their immune systems will continue to weaken, which the NCI says makes them more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. • EAT A HEALTHY DIET. There is no magical food or foods that can strengthen the immune system to a point where infection is impossible. However, the Cleveland Clinic notes that a balanced, healthy diet that includes a mix of vitamins and minerals plays a role in strengthening the immune system. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain a bevy of vitamins and antioxidants that help the immune system fight off potential infections. Many people bemoan the absence of fresh fruits and vegetables at their local grocery stores during certain times of the year. But the Cleveland Clinic notes that manufacturers typically free frozen fruits and vegetables at peak ripeness. That means frozen fruits and vegetables provide similar nutrition to fresh fruits and vegetables during those times of year when foods are not in-season.
• EXERCISE REGULARLY. Like a healthy diet, routine exercise provides a host of benefits, and one such benefit is its impact on the immune systems. The U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that the precise relationship between exercise and immune system function remains a mystery. Some researchers suspect that physical activity may flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways, reducing one’s risk of getting a cold, flu or other illness. Another theory suggests that exercises causes changes in white blood cells, which the immune system uses to fight disease. These exercise-related changes may make it possible for the cells to detect illnesses earlier than they would if the body was not exercised regularly. While it’s important to note that these are just theories, the Harvard Medical School suggests that it’s reasonable to consider moderate regular exercise an important component of a healthy, immune-boosting lifestyle. • DON’T BUY THE HYPE. Men and women interested in boosting their immune systems will no doubt find many products claiming to do just that. The Harvard Medical School urges consumers to be skeptical of such products, many of which make dubious claims that are not rooted in recognized scientific research. The immune system remains a mystery in many ways. But several healthy strategies may help people bolster their immune systems and potentially reduce their risk of infection.

Plastic/Reconstructive Surgeon on Staff at Silver Cross Breast Center Whether you’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer or are at high risk for developing it in the future, your doctor may have had a conversation with you about breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction is a special type of surgery to rebuild the shape and look of the breast, typically after breast cancer surgery such as mastectomy. Dr. Alan Chen is a plastic/reconstructive surgeon on staff at the Silver Cross Breast Center. He has been practicing in Joliet since 2007. Dr. Chen performs all aspects of reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. At the Silver Cross Breast Center, he performs breast reconstruction procedures for women following mastectomy or lumpectomy for treatment of breast cancer. When considering breast reconstruction, there are many reasons why a woman might choose this option: to make her chest looked balanced when she’s wearing a bra or swimsuit, to permanently regain her breast shape, so she won’t have to use a breast form that fits inside the bra (an external prosthesis); or lastly to be happier with her body and how she feels about herself. “Just as we have seen improvements in diagnosis and treatment, so too has our ability to create stable and cosmetically pleasing results been enhanced to higher and higher levels, even in very difficult circumstances” he added. For patients who have already undergone breast conservation therapy and
now have deformity of their breast, surgical options are available. “The ideal method for reconstructing these patients, known as flap reconstruction, involves transferring tissue into the defect that has not been subject to the effects of radiation. The transfer of non-radiated tissue into a deformed breast is a powerful tool that can restore an aesthetically pleasing shape while improving the feel and sometimes pain associated with a severe deformity." Dr. Chen completed his Bachelor of Arts degree and graduated Cum Laude from Cornell University. He received his Medical Degree with honors from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. Dr. Chen completed a General Surgery Residency at Harvard Medical School at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. During this training, Dr. Chen also completed a two-year surgical research fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine in the Division of Vascular Surgery. Following his general surgery training, Dr. Chen then completed a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, recognized as having one of the best Plastic Surgery Residency programs in the nation. After his training in Plastic Surgery, Dr. Chen stayed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and took an additional year in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery Fellowship in the Department of Orthopedics.

After several months of physical therapy with Morris Hospital, Sharon Donahue of Morris has transitioned to the Morris YMCA and continues to make great progress.
Gaining Strength through Morris Hospital’s Rehab Services Sharon Donahue has many reasons to feel blessed that she lives in Morris, and one is that the proficient physical therapists at the Diagnostic & Rehabilitative Center of Morris Hospital are nearby.
leave the wheelchair behind for a walker. That was a turning point
“They are the best,” Donahue says. “I’ve made a lot of progress since coming to Morris Hospital’s rehab center.”
I walk in with a walker.”
Last February, Donahue began working with Morris Hospital physical therapist Elaine Gengenbacher to overcome extreme weakness due to muscular atrophy in her legs resulting from surgery. “I couldn’t find my legs or my feet, and I couldn’t walk,” she says. “I couldn’t even sit up. I didn’t have any balance.” In order to walk again, Donahue’s muscles needed to be retrained and strengthened. Physical therapy sessions held three times a week at Morris Hospital’s Diagnostic & Rehabilitative Center included work on the parallel bars and stationary bicycle, mat exercises, squats, lateral walking and sit-to-stand exercises. In addition to Gengenbacher, Donahue had the opportunity to work with Morris Hospital physical therapists Ryan Bechtel and Shannon Gambon and physical therapy assistant Belinda Hill. “We worked on my core, we worked on my back, we worked on every muscle I had and some I didn’t know I had,” Donahue says with a laugh. When Donahue’s muscles were ready, she was able to focus on walking. A celebrated milestone occurred when she was able to
for Donahue and her husband, Julian Houston. “Julian used to have to wheel me in in a wheelchair,” she says. “Now Today, Donahue has made the transition to one physical therapy session a week, which she supplements with exercise done at home and the Morris YMCA, along with water therapy in a friend’s pool. She says she looks forward to the day she can walk unassisted and stand long enough to cut fabric and help her husband in the kitchen. She even looks forward to doing laundry again. Bowling, serving in her church and returning to volunteering with the Morris Hospital Patient Transportation program with her husband are also much anticipated goals. “I’m just a work in progress,” she says, “but I have faith I’ll get there.” Individuals experiencing the physical effects of an injury or medical condition may benefit from physical, occupational or speech therapy services. In addition to the Diagnostic & Rehabilitative Center in Morris, Morris Hospital offers physical and occupational therapy at the Morris Hospital Ridge Road Campus in Channahon and physical therapy at the Morris Hospital Yorkville Campus.
